Ryan Gosling Won't Direct The Idolmaker Remake-- He's Just Too Busy

published: 2011-06-03 09:26:12 Author: Katey Rich
It wasn't even a month ago that we reported Ryan Gosling would make his directorial debut with The Idolmaker a remake of the 1980 film about a music producer who turns a saxophone player into a star. Gosling was plenty busy at the time, as we pointed out then, with commitments to projects ranging from the small-scale crime drama The Place Beyond The Pines to a remake of Logan's Run. Now Gosling has apparently gotten the memo that he's a little too busy for his own good, and according to Deadline let MGM know that he won't be able to direct The Idolmaker after all.

The change may have happened because Bradley Cooper has confirmed he'll join Gosling in Pines, meaning that project can go ahead and shoot this summer under Gosling's Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance. From there Gosling will star along with Sean Penn and Josh Brolin in the period crime drama Gangster Quad, and at some point he does have to run away from the futuristic authorities in the Logan's Run remake. MGM is going to keep developing Idolmaker and hope that Gosling might return to work on it, but given how wide-ranging the guy's interests are who knows when he might come back. With his Cannes hit Drive coming at some point this year, and also a turn in the rom-com Crazy Stupid Love this summer, Gosling keeps bolstering his reputation as one of the most interesting actors working today. He's just not going to add "director" to that description any time soon.

Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser And Craig Robinson Will Revive The 60s In Freaky Deaky

published: 2011-06-03 08:19:22 Author: Katey Rich
Elmore Leonard's clever crime novels have made for some terrific movies over the years, including the great 90s triumvirate of Get Shorty, Out of Sight and Jackie Brown. He's even the godfather of the current FX series Justified, having created the character Raylan Givens that Timothy Olyphant plays. The last Leonard novel to be adapted into a film was the virtually unseen 2009 film Killshot, but he's giving it a go again with an adaptation of Freaky Deaky , a crime story that just bulked up its cast.

According to Variety Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser and Craig Robinson will all join William H. Macy in the film, about two ex-hippies who concoct a plot to build some bombs and scare a Hollywood producer out of his cash. Fraser will be playing one of the hippies, who now works as a pyrotechnics expert, and Macy will play the mogul with the delicious name of Woody Ricks. Robinson will play a former Black Panther who works with the mogul, while Dillon, ever in hero mode, plays the square-jawed LAPD bomb squad officer who discovers the plot. The film is being direct, producer and adapted by Charles Matthau, founder of The Matthau Company and, indeed, son of Walter Matthau; his directing credits go all the way back to 1988's Doin' Time on Planet Earth.

They'll be changing a few details of Freaky Deaky such as shifting the time setting from the late 80s to 1974, a change Leonard himself approved of. Rights to the novel had at various point been in the hands of Quentin Tarantino and John Malkovich, and it's hard to know what to expect out of this one, though also hard to argue with this motley assortment of character actors who typically liven up every film they're in. Production starts this June in Michigan, once Matthau picks the woman he wants to play the female lead-- in the book, Fraser's character Skip Gibbs is working alongside female ex-con Robin Abbott.

Nicholas Hoult Covers 'BlackBook' June/July 2011

Nicholas Hoult Covers 'BlackBook' June/July 2011
Nicholas Hoult heats up the cover of BlackBook’s June/July “Outsiders” issue.
Here’s what the 21-year-old X-Men: First Class star had to share with the mag:
On being watched onscreen: “There are so many people watching you. I enjoy the acting part. But then I forget that people are actually going to watch it.”
On his sex scenes in Skins: “We grabbed a couple glasses of vodka and some champagne at 8 in the morning, and we just went on and did it.”
On self doubt: “I still worry that I’m never going to get another job. Whenever a new film comes out, I always worry that it’s going to be the one people look at and go, ‘Don’t ever hire him again.’”
On working with Colin Firth in A Single Man: “I was doing my American accent, and Colin was doing his usual English accent, but I was letting mine slip. I remember thinking, Uh oh, I’m in trouble. But Colin is very relaxed and free, which made my job easy. There’s a fantastic subtlety to his acting, like you can read every thought and emotion that passes through his mind.”

**Michael Shannon Cast as General Zod in SUPERMAN Reboot MAN OF STEEL **Teaser Trailer for THE WOMAN IN BLACK Starring Daniel Radcliffe **Third X-Men: First Class International Trailer

Michael Shannon Cast as General Zod in SUPERMAN Reboot MAN OF STEEL

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: April 10th, 2011

Viggo Mortensen was never able to find the right hole in his schedule to play General Zod in the upcoming Superman reboot, now officially titled Man of Steel.  Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, however, landed on a fantastic alternative: Michael Shannon.  Shannon was rumored for an unspecified villain role last month — the studios have announced today he will play Zod.  Director Zack Snyder remarked,
“Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t.  Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”
I could not agree more.  Henry Cavill will star as Clark Kent/Superman.  The supporting cast includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent.  Read the official announcement after the jump.

Teaser Trailer for THE WOMAN IN BLACK Starring Daniel Radcliffe

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: April 10th, 2011

The teaser trailer for the ghost thriller The Woman in Black has gone online. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, the film is based on the classic ghost story by Susan Hill that centers on a young lawyer visiting a remote English town that, naturally, holds many ghostly secrets. The trailer is very much a teaser, and doesn’t really give much of the plot away, but I’m liking the air of creepiness and general unease that it suggests.
Hit the jump to check out the teaser for yourself. The Woman in Black hits theaters in the UK on February 10th, 2012 with a US release date currently unknown.

FilmDistrict to Release THE RUM DIARY Starring Johnny Depp on October 28th
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 29th, 2011
We haven’t heard much about Bruce Robinson’s adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s The Rum Diary since we ran some images from the flick last June. It was slightly worrisome that a movie that starred Johnny Depp, Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Michael Rispoli, Richard Jenkins, and Giovanni Ribisi was sitting on the shelf, but now that worry can be set aside. FilmDistrict has announced that they have picked up the film and will release in the heart of awards season on October 28th.

The story centers on itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Depp) who moves to Puerto Rico and eventually discovers his voice as a writer and his integrity. Hit the jump for a full synopsis and the press release. The only other films currently opening on October 28th are the horror flick Dibbuk Box and Andrew Niccol’s sci-fi thriller Now starring Amanda Seyfried and Justin Timberlake.

Hailee Steinfeld Attached to SLEEPING BEAUTY Spec Script
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 29th, 2011
Hailee Steinfeld may have missed out on The Hunger Games due to her age, but the young Oscar-nominee is showing no signs of slowing down. In addition to circling an adaptation of the upcoming novel Forgotten, Steinfeld is now attached to lead a re-imagining of Sleeping Beauty. According to Deadline, Lindsay Devlin’s script tells the story from the eponymous princess’ point of view and has her fighting to find a way out of the dream world. While I’m getting a little sick of these re-tooled fairy tales, I like the premise of this one. The story of waiting for a prince is stale and a smart director could have some fun telling the tale from Aurora’s point of view.

However, if Sleeping Beauty moves forward (the script is currently out to buyers) it will have plenty of competition when it comes to fairy tale re-imaginings. Hit the jump for list of just some of the public domain properties that Hollywood is banking on.

Teresa Palmer in Talks to Co-Star with Nicholas Hoult in Zombie Love Story WARM BODIES
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 29th, 2011
Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) is in talks to star alongside Nicholas Hoult (A Single Man) in Jonathan Levine’s adaptation of Isaac Marion’s upcoming novel Warm Bodies. Per Heat Vision, the story is described as a cross between Shaun of the Dead (yay!) and Twilight (nay!) and “follows an existentially tormented zombie named R that begins an unlikely friendship with the human girlfriend (Palmer) of one of his victims. The blossoming relationship starts a chain reaction that will transform him, his fellow zombies and maybe the whole lifeless world.” Palmer’s character is the daughter of one of the “military leaders who is tiring of a life of constantly fighting off zombie attacks.”

Palmer recently co-starred in back-to-back duds with I Am Number Four and Take Me Home Tonight, but I don’t think the short-comings of those films are her fault. She showed she can be a bad-ass in I Am Number Four and she demonstrated charm in TMHT, so it’s really a matter of finding the right project for her talents. Perhaps Warm Bodies will be it. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

James Spader, Ryan Phillippe, and Carla Gugino Join Eric Bana in Sheldon Turner’s BY VIRTUE FALL
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 29th, 2011
Last summer we reported that Eric Bana and Colin Farrell were in talks to co-star in By Virtue Fall, the directorial debut of Up in the Air screenwriter Sheldon Turner. Farrell eventually dropped off the project but Bana has signed on and according to 24 Frames, he’ll be joined by James Spader, Ryan Phillippe, and Carla Gugino. The story concerns “two ATF agents who find themselves on opposite sides of the friendship divide after one sells out the other.”

Bana tells 24 Frames that he hopes to make By Virtue Fall his next project after finishing the thriller Blackbird with Olivia Wilde. He’ll be seen in theaters this week alongside Cate Blanchett and Saoirse Ronan in Joe Wright’s Hanna.

Warner Bros. to Reboot BATMAN after THE DARK KNIGHT RISES; Christopher Nolan to Remain on as Producer
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 29th, 2011
Christopher Nolan has publicly stated that The Dark Knight Rises will be his final Batman film, and Warner Bros. is already looking ahead to the future of the franchise. As we reported last night, the studio is currently planning a Justice League movie for 2013 and Warner Bros. president Jeff Robinov tells Hero Complex that scripts are being written for Flash and Wonder Woman (the Wonder Woman project would exist separately from the upcoming NBC show). But most intriguing is what the studio plans to do with its marquee superhero, Batman:

“We have the third Batman, but then we’ll have to reinvent Batman…” says Robinov. “Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what the next phase is.”

Hit the jump for my thoughts on the future of the Batman franchise.

Jennifer Garner To Play Miss Marple
published: 2011-03-28 21:23:07 Author: Mack Rawden
I’m a pretty emotionally level person. There are very few things I’m invested in enough to fundamentally alter my mood, but Agatha Christie novels are one of the few sentiments I cling to. I grew up reading every one of her novels I could get my hands on. I watched all the films, the television shows and even read a biography chronicling that bizarre incident where she briefly disappeared. It’s a subject close to my heart; so, imagine my bewilderment when I read Eric’s article earlier today telling me Disney was making a Miss Marple film in which they were reinterpreting the character as a thirty-something. That’s right, shaving some thirty-five years off my favorite old woman to cater her to a new generation who apparently hates the elderly. Initially, I hoped maybe this was just some ludicrous pipe dream that would never make it to production, but now we have actual casting news. This bullshit is not going away, people.

According to Deadline, Jennifer Garner has officially boarded as this madeover Miss Marple. No offense to her, but what in God’s name is going on this afternoon? Why even make this a Miss Marple story? If you want to introduce a young and sassy female detective, why not make her Miss Marple’s great niece or some wily girl she gave piano lessons to back in the day?

Here’s a few more ideas straight out of this horrid bag of tricks. Let’s do a Jaws where the shark is reinterpreted as a manatee who does tricks. Then when we’re done, let’s do a James Bond set in a local high school in which 0-0-7 is his locker combination! Oh God, I’m cooking with gas now. How about a Home Alone reboot where Kevin can’t find his wife at the Sandals’ pool?

The whole point of Miss Marple is that she’s a nice, disengaging old woman who can easily pry information out of suspects. Giving her sex appeal just meddles with the equation. Let’s hope to God Twin Peaks co-creator Mark Frost has put more thought into this then it seems. He’s hard at work on the script as we speak, but beyond the basic premise, details are very scarce. http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Jennifer-Garner-To-Play-Miss-Marple-23921.html

Cinema Con In Photos: New Images, Posters, Title Treatments And More
published: 2011-03-28 18:20:04 Author: Katey Rich
I've already shown you the major highlight from the exhibit floor at Cinema Con, the first look at Caesar in Rise of the Apes. But there's plenty more to see, as the floor is jammed with posters, standees and other advertising for a ton of upcoming movies. Not all of it is new, but there's always something interesting to look at.

In the gallery below you can check out brand new images from upcoming Fox films like The Sitter, We Bought a Zoo, Now, A Big Year and Monte Carlo, plus new title treatments for The Change-Up and Larry Crowne and other posters I thought were worth seeing. I'll be updating the site as new posters show up throughout the week, so make sure to keep coming back! For all the Cinema Con coverage as it happens, go here.

First Look At Caesar In Rise Of The Apes
I've arrived in Las Vegas for this year's Cinema Con, the annual gathering of movie industry executives and theater owners where the major studios take the chance to show off their goods for the coming year, especially summer movies. There will be a lot to see from the presentations from Paramount, DreamWorks, Disney and Warner Bros., but kicking things off in the goody bag, of all places, was Fox, which handed out a calendar featuring brand-new images from many of its upcoming films.

We'll have all of those images later today, but by far the most interesting is the first look at Caesar from Rise of the Apes, the Planet of the Apes prequel coming to theaters in August. The first official image focused on human star James Franco, but this is the first look at the main ape, played in a motion-capture performance by Andy Serkis. Check out the photo below-- it's not great, we know, but we'll have to hope for an official version released online soon. You can click on it for a much larger version too.

R.I.P. Elizabeth Taylor (1932 – 2011)
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 23rd, 2011
elizabeth-taylor-slice-01

Actress Elizabeth Taylor has passed away at the age of 79. ABC News has confirmed that Taylor died of congestive heart failure this morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Taylor’s career in Hollywood spanned five decades. She was nominated for five Oscars and she took home the award for Best Actress for her riveting performances in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and BUtterfield 8. While she retired from acting in 2001, she was one of Hollywood’s greatest legends and one of the most in-demand stars of the 1950s and 60s. In 1985, she devoted herself to fund-raising and activism against AIDS and the family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. Our deepest condolences go out to Ms. Taylor’s friends and family. Hit the jump for a statement from her son Michael Wilding.

Taylor’s son Michael Wilding released an official statement:
“My Mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love.  Though her loss is devastating to those of us who held her so close and so dear, we will always be inspired by her enduring contribution to our world. Her remarkable body of work in film, her ongoing success as a businesswoman, and her brave and relentless advocacy in the fight against HIV/AIDS, all make us all incredibly proud of what she accomplished. We know, quite simply, that the world is a better place for Mom having lived in it. Her legacy will never fade, her spirit will always be with us, and her love will live forever in our hearts.”

Will Sasso Joins THE THREE STOOGES Casting Race
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 23rd, 2011
Add Will Sasso ($#*! My Dad Says) to the list of potential actors who may be leading the Farrelly Brothers’ The Three Stooges. THR reports that Sasso is a “likely frontrunner to play Moe, Larry or Curly”. While I don’t doubt that Sasso has the comic range to play any of the Stooges, I think we can all agree that he would probably play Curly if he was cast in the film.

I’ve been a fan of Sasso’s ever since I saw him on MADtv back in the 90s and I’d be happy to see him land such a major role. After the jump, you can check out Sasso in one of my favorite MADtv sketches, “Paul Timberman’s Workshop”.

Bill Nighy and Danny Huston Join CLASH OF THE TITANS Sequel; Full Synopsis Revealed
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 23rd, 2011
Production has begun on Jonathan Liebesman’s untitled sequel to Clash of the Titans. Warner Bros. has sent out a press release confirming the film’s cast. Returning actors Sam Worthington (Perseus), Liam Neeson (Zeus), Ralph Fiennes (Hades), and Danny Huston (seen in the first film for half-a-second as Poseidon), will be joined by Edgar Ramirez (Ares), Toby Kebbell (Argenor, Posiedon’s demigod son), Rosamund Pike (Andromeda), and Bill Nighy (Hephaestus). It’s worth noting that Gemma Arterton, who was rumored to return as Io, isn’t mentioned in the press release.

Warner Bros. has also sent out a full synopsis for the sequel. The story takes place 10 years after the first film with Perseus attempting to lead a quiet life. But he’s called back into action in order to rescue Zeus after the god is captured by Ares and Hades in a deal to unleash the titans. The plot clearly has a major role set up for Kronos, the leader of the titans, but no actor has been linked to the role at this point.

Trailer for Yet another Terrible-Looking 50 Cent Movie, SETUP, Co-Starring Bruce Willis
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 23rd, 2011
A couple weeks ago, we showed you the hilariously-awful trailer for Things Fall Apart starring Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. While some rappers have shown they can excel at music and acting, 50 Cent is not one of those rappers. Any on-stage charisma he has vanishes when he’s on camera, and his gigantic teeth seem to get in the way of him intelligibly delivering dialogue.

But if you saw the trailer for Things Fall Apart and were left thinking, “Man, I wish there was more where that came from,” then you’re in luck. The trailer for future direct-to-DVD movie Setup has gone online and it will leave you wondering, “Seriously, Bruce Willis? You’re in this? Did you forget you’re an A-Lister?” I can understand when Val Kilmer co-stars with 50 Cent in Gun, but this just baffles me to pieces.

Javier Bardem ‘Psychologically Confirmed’ to Star in Ron Howard’s THE DARK TOWER
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 1st, 2011
Back in January, it was reported that actor Javier Bardem had been offered the lead role in Ron Howard’s ambitious three film/TV series adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. While not much was heard after that, Howard’s producing partner Brian Grazer recently offered an update on Bardem’s involvement:
“Javier Bardem, that’s what we’re hoping. We’re in the process of trying to put that together. He’s locked in psychologically. He really wants to do it, so we’re absolutely rooting for him to do it.”
So it looks like Bardem’s keen to take the role on, and he’s currently in the negotiating phase. This could take a while, given that if he signs on it will likely be for three films and one “season” of the TV series. The adaptation is being spread out over three feature films, with two TV “seasons” bridging the gap between each film. In the interview with MTV, Grazer also revealed that the first story they’re exploring is The Gunslinger, which is the first book in King’s Dark Tower series. Hit the jump for more on The Dark Tower.

On his way to a meeting with a publisher, aspiring novelist Sam Wexler (Radnor) meets Rasheen (Michael Algieri), a young boy separated from his family on the subway. Eleanor Tomlinson Lands Female Lead in Bryan Singer’s JACK THE GIANT KILLER
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 1st, 2011
Director Bryan Singer is putting the final casting pieces into place in his epic adventure story Jack the Giant Killer. Deadline reports that British actress Eleanor Tomlinson (Alice in Wonderland) has landed the female lead in the flick, opposite Nicholas Hoult who stars as the titular Jack. In addition to Hoult and Tomlinson, Ewan McGregor joined the cast last week, while Stanley Tucci is signed to star as the villain and Bill Nighy and John Kassir take on the role of the two-headed leader of the giants. Variety suggests the switch is counterprogramming tactic; action tentpole X-Men: First Class is the only other film scheduled for June 3.
Heigl plays “a down-and-out woman who takes a last-ditch job working for her cousin’s bail bond business, and her biggest client turns out to be her high-school heartbreaker.” Jason O’Mara, John Leguizamo, and Debbie Reynolds also star, directed by Julie Anne Robinson (The Last Song) from a script by Liz Brixius (Nurse Jackie). One for the Money is based on the novel of the same name by Janet Evanovich; hit the jump for a synopsis.

Tom Cruise Joins ROCK OF AGES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 11th, 2011

After circling the project for several months, Tom Cruise is closing a deal to star in the musical Rock of Ages.  The film is an adaptation of the popular stage musical about 1980s rockers.  According to THR, Cruise will play “Stacee Jaxx, the arrogant and charming star at the top of his career. Jaxx sings Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead of Alive” in the theater production.  Adam Shankman (Hairspray) will direct from a script by Chris D’Arienzo.  Mary J. Blige, Gwyneth Paltrow, Russell Brand, and Alec Baldwin are also considering roles in the film.
Production on the film is scheduled to start in May.  Cruise is also being courted for for the lead in Guillermo del Toro’s At the Mountains of Madness.  The role will most likely require less singing than Rock of Ages.

Nicholas Hoult Nabs Lead Role in Bryan Singer’s JACK THE GIANT KILLER

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 11th, 2011

Nicholas Hoult is set to star in Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Killer.  The story is a darker spin on the fairy tale of “Jack and the Beanstalk”.  In this re-telling, Jack is on a mission to rescue a princess from the kingdom of the giants. Earlier this week, we reported that casting was ramping up and that Stanley Tucci would play the film’s villain Roderick while Bill Nighy would play one of the two heads of two-headed leader of the giants (the other is played by John Kassir).  Deadline reports that Hoult got on Singer’s radar after being cast as Beast in X-Men: First Class, which Singer is producing.
Hit the jump for more on Hoult.

Bruce Willis in Talks to Join Rebecca Hall in LAY THE FAVORITE, TAKE THE DOG; DIE HARD 5 Goes Back to the Drawing Board

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 11th, 2011

A couple weeks ago, we reported that rising star Rebecca Hall (The Town) would lead Stephen Frears’ adaptation of Beth Raymor’s Lay the Favorite: A Memoir of Gambling.  Hall will play Raymor, who chronicled her years working in the world of Vegas sports gambling.  Today, Vulture reports that Bruce Willis has signed on to play Raymor’s mentor/boss Dink Heimowitz in the flick, which is now titled Lay the Favorite, Take the Dog.  In the synopsis of the book, “Dinky” is described as “lovable, irascible, and big-bellied.”  I’m not sure Willis is willing to pack on the pounds, but he’s got “irascible” down to a science.
Vulture also mentions that Die Hard 5 isn’t as far along in development as we thought.  Hit the jump for more on the project as well as the book synopsis for Lay the Favorite.

Bryan Singer Testing Actors for JACK THE GIANT KILLER, Including Aaron Johnson and Nicholas Hoult

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 30th, 2010

Last we heard, New Line had greenlit Jack the Giant Killer from director Bryan Singer, who was in the early stages of casting. Singer has narrowed his casting list down, and is set to start screen testing a number of actors for both the male and female lead in the adventure film that finds the aptly-named Jack attempting to rescue a princess from giants.  Heat Vision reports that Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass), Nicholas Hoult (A Single Man), and Aneurin Barnard have been asked to come in and test for the title role. Johnson has long been thought to be the frontrunner for the role, and his Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn has recently been working closely with Singer on X-Men: First Class. Funnily enough, Hoult is currently filming his role as Beast in X-Men: First Class. Barnard is a relative newcomer, best known for his performance in the West End production of Spring Awakening.
Actresses considered for the role of the princess include Adelaide Kane (Power Rangers: RPM), Lily Collins (The Blind Side), and Juno Temple (Greenberg). Screen tests are set to take place in London in the next two weeks. For more on the project, hit the jump.
Even though I think Johnson is a fine actor, I like that Singer is screen testing for the role. It shows that he’s serious about finding the right person for the project, and not just going with who he has the closest ties to. If that person happens to be Johnson, I have no doubt he’ll knock the role out of the park. That guy definitely has a big career ahead of him.
Jack the Giant Killer has been in the works for quite a while now.  Singer was originally going to direct the film before he helmed X-Men: First Class, but when it was clear that the CGI-heavy flick needed a lot more time and attention, he decided to simply produce the X-Men prequel instead of directing.  Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) has been fine-tuning the script while Singer has been busy pre-vising and working on the visual effects of the film. Apparently he wants the effects as finished as possible before he starts filming so he can see the actors interact with the CGI giants in the live-action portions of the film.  Production on the New Line Cinema/Legendary Pictures film is set to begin in March.

Christopher Nolan Talks THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, INCEPTION Videogame; Confirms This Is “the Last Chapter of Our Batman Saga”

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 30th, 2010

With Inception hitting Blu-ray and DVD next week, director Christopher Nolan has been doing the press rounds recently and, of course, all anyone wants to talk about is The Dark Knight Rises.  While talking to EW, Nolan confirmed what we’ve all known for quite a while, calling The Dark Knight Rises “the last chapter of our Batman saga.”  More interestingly, though, was Nolan’s response when asked if any part of him wished he were taking on another original script instead of diving back into the Batman franchise:
“No, it’s exactly the opposite. I feel very glad that I’m doing another Batman film. I think it would have been daunting to sit down and write an original script after Inception. I love working within the realm and rules of our Batman world. It’s kind of nice to have someplace to go that I’m super-excited about.”
Another choice quote from Nolan, which makes me very happy, was in addressing the freedom he’s been granted on this final installment of the Batman franchise given Inception’s massive success, “I must say that I’m glad — I’m very, very glad — to be embarking on the last chapter of our Batman saga without any sense of obligation or duty to the studio. They did very well with Inception. So I’m able to go into finishing our story in a very enthusiastic way.”  For more from Nolan, including info on that Inception videogame and his response to sequel rumors, hit the jump.

Regarding the videogame, Nolan is apparently “developing the game with a team of collaborators and [it’s] a long-term proposition.” So, we don’t know exactly when we’ll get to check it out, but it’s pretty much guaranteed to be kick-ass.  He was also asked about the possibility of a sequel to Inception, to which he responded, “it’s not something I want to say no to, but it’s not something I’ve given a lot of thought about.”
I find this promising, as I’d much rather see Nolan move onto another original project or new adaptation post-Batman than return to Inception. It just seems like the type of film that would be soiled by the mere existence of a sequel—it’s a damn fine work of art and deserves to stand alone.
When asked whether the top at the end of the film was, in fact, still spinning, Nolan laughed the question off. “I’ve been asked the question more times than I’ve ever been asked any other question about any other film I’ve made…What’s funny to me is that people really do expect me to answer it.” Though he doesn’t answer that question directly, Nolan did recently sit down and explain a good deal of the film (or at least much more than was expected from a man so secretive about his projects). The Dark Knight Rises is set to start filming early next year, with a release date positioned for July 20, 2012.
Expect a lot more news on The Dark Knight Rises as casting should be in full swing soon.
