Posters For Contagion, Final Destination 5 And More Arrive Online

published: 2011-06-21 15:22:06 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Last week was the 2001 Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas. While much of what came out of the convention wasn't that great, it did provide looks at projects including The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Hunger Games. But while the expo has long since ended, concept art is still leaking online.

While the site doesn't specify if the artwork comes from the aforementioned Licensing Expo, JoBlo has put up six new posters from upcoming films, including Contagion, Final Destination 5, New Year's Eve, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, and J. Edgar. It should be noted that while the last four are examples of poster concepts, the first two are real and will probably be officially released sometime soon (Contagion is due out int theaters on October 21 while Final Destination 5 arrives on August 12).

Check out three of the posters below and head over to JoBlo for the rest.

James McAvoy Welcomes Andrea Riseborough To Welcome The Punch

published: 2011-06-21 14:14:57 Author: Sean O'Connell
Andrea Riseborough, who co-starred in a pair of festival darlings last year, is poised to break out in a bigger feature alongside an A-list (or, actually, X-list) leading man.

Riseborough, who had parts in both Made in Dagenham and Mark Romanek’s moody Never Let Me Go, has been cast opposite X-Men: First Class star James McAvoy in the British crime drama Welcome to the Punch, Variety is reporting. No word yet on who the actress would play, though we already know that McAvoy’s a detective forced to form what the trade calls “an unlikely union” with a criminal (played by the formidable Mark Strong of Green Lantern, Kick-Ass and Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes).

No matter the part, this is a step up for Riseborough, a British actress who got her start on UK television – try and find the series Party Animals, where she played Kirsty MacKenzie – and seems to be climbing the ranks into bigger productions and, we hope, better roles. Next she’ll be seen with Abbie Cornish in Madonna’s feature film
W.E.<./i>. As for Welcome To The Punch, which is written and directed by Eran Creevy, it starts production on July 18 in London.http://www.cinemablend.com/new/James-McAvoy-Welcomes-Andrea-Riseborough-To-Welcome-The-Punch-25328.html

Ron Howard's Dark Tower Isn't Dead And Javier Bardem Isn't Cast

published: 2011-06-21 11:43:36 Author: Josh Tyler
Ron Howard’s upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s Dark Tower series was originally announced as one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken. It was to be a project so big that it couldn’t be contained in one format, to be told in different parts both on the big screen and the small screen. Then, somewhere along the way, Universal’s accountants got involved and essentially said, no way, we’re not risking that much money. Now we’re not even sure if The Dark Tower will get made at all, or if it does get made whether Ron Howard will be given a big enough budget to do anything with it.

Ron and his producing partner Brian Grazer recent sat down with Deadline and offered an update on where they’re at with The Dark Tower, and while their project isn’t dead yet, things seem kind of bleak. Yet they sound determined to do it as a media format spanning project. Howard thinks that’s important and explains it this way:

We could have tried to force all of it into one or two or three movies. It became clear to me that the medium of TV has become so bold and cool, we could use it to our advantage creatively and really fulfill the possibilities of this universe of characters King gave us to work with. We can use the intimacy of television when that’s appropriate, and the scope and scale of the big screen with the bigger fantasy ideas. We discovered elements that would probably never have a home either on the big screen or on TV, but would make fantastic narrative gaming opportunities that won’t rehash the movies or TV, but have its own material borne out of the books and graphic novels. We’ve got gaming designers and there is enthusiasm for that. It’s a way to use all the mediums at our disposal to try to fulfill what’s possible. Universal sees this as an asset that can benefit the company in a lot of different ways.
I get excited just reading that, not only because I love The Dark Tower, but because it’s a big, bold idea of the kind we haven’t really seen in Hollywood since New Line Cinema risked a ton of money on shooting three Lord of the Rings movies back to back. Actually, compared to this idea, Lord of the Rings was a small thing. I guess it’s easy to understand why the studio, Universal Pictures, might have blanched at the prospect of taking such a big risk. But it sounds like they may still be on board. Howard explains the delays:
The first version represented a bold attempt to fast track, because of weather concerns. It was a little more dramatic to people on the outside than to us. We’d have liked to move forward on that fast track, but it was always Phase One. There was an understanding that if we couldn’t answer all the questions in a way that made sense to all the partners involved, then we would operate on a slightly more traditional timetable. Even if we go in March, that’s still moving quickly for something of this scale.
Delays we can live with, but as a fan of this series you and I know that this thing needs a massive budget if it’s ever going to be done right on the big screen. Initially they were supposed to have the money they needed, but now they’re being forced to scale it back. What no one’s sure of is just how much, and neither Howard nor Grazer will confirm how much money is being taken off the table. Grazer says:
I’m producing it with Akiva Goldsman, who wrote it to be sensitive to cost and is rewriting it to be more so. Without putting a number on it, the cuts aren’t that deep or that radical.
As for where they are with casting, last we heard it was all but a done deal for Javier Bardem to play Roland, the movie’s lead. But now they seem to be leaving the door open for someone else to take the part. When asked of Javier’s set to play Roland, Ron Howard responded this way:
Nobody is pay or play but he has said he wants to do it. We’ve spent a lot of time together. He’s fascinated by the character and has great instincts for Roland. I’m hoping when we go, he’s available and will join us. http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Ron-Howard-s-Dark-Tower-Isn-t-Dead-And-Javier-Bardem-Isn-t-Cast-25325.html

Ron Howard Explains THE DARK TOWER Delay; Javier Bardem Not Yet Confirmed to Star

by Matt Goldberg  Posted: May 25th, 2011 at 11:02 am

I admire Ron Howard’s for his incredible ambition in trying to adapt Steven King’s The Dark Tower series into a trilogy of films with a TV series as the connective tissue between movies.  I don’t think he’ll be able to pull it off because he’s a bland director who thoughts that The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons needed to be humorless messes that retained all of the stupidity of the novels.
But earlier in May, Universal considered pulling out of The Dark Tower due to budget concerns.  The following week, we reported that Universal was working to bring down the budget and had pushed back the film’s start date.  Howard has now provided an update on the project’s status.  According to Howard, they’re now eyeing a spring 2012 start date but they’re stilling waiting for the green light.  Hit the jump for the full quote from Howard where he also casts doubt on the involvement of Javier Bardem. http://collider.com/dark-tower-ron-howard-delay-javier-bardem/92849/

Another "The Amityville Horror" Sequel Announced
Posted: May 15th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

A few days ago, we reported that Hannibal Classics was developing a new "Amityville Horror" film, based on John G Jones' "Amityville: The Evil Escapes" book with plans to begin filming this fall for an October 2012 release.

And now comes word that Dimension Films and Miramax will begin production on "The Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes," as part of a bigger plan to create sequels to some of Miramax's best-known properties.

The film will be in the found footage-style and will take place after the original "The Amityville Horror" film. Casey La Scala and Daniel Farrands are directing from their own script. Shooting will begin this summer for a January 27th, 2012 release. Jason Blum (Insidious, Paranormal Activity) is producing.

Plot: An ambitious female television news intern, on the verge of breaking the most famous haunted house case in the world, leads a team of journalists, clergymen and paranormal researchers into an investigation of the bizarre events that will come to be known as The Amityville Horror ... only to unwittingly open a door to the unreal that she may never be able to close.

"We are thrilled to return to the mythology of 'The Amityville Horror' with a new and terrifying vision that will satisfy our existing fans and also introduce an entirely new audience to this popular haunting phenomenon," said producer Bob Weinstein.

"Monsters" Sequel in the Works
Posted: May 15th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Last year, a $500,000 sci-fi movie called "Monsters" hit theaters and grossed over $4 million in addition to received great reviews. Vertigo Films has now announced that it will make a sequel to "Monsters" with commercial directors Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas at the helm.

Gareth Edwards, who directed the first installment, will serve as executive producer along with "Monsters" actor Scoot McNairy. The sequel has a budget of around $5 million and will shoot in September in possibly Argentina.

"We're going to keep the same quality and intelligence of the first film and make it much more of a straight genre picture," said producer Allan Niblo. "'Monsters 2' will expand the world created in the original movie whilst upping the action ante."

Niblo describes the tale, set in a walled city, as a story about two brothers finding each other in a world of monsters. He added that the variety of aliens will differ in the new installment.

"The Dark Tower" is Moving Forward But With Changes
Posted: May 14th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Universal Pictures has been developing Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" as a trilogy of films, but recently decided to take a step back and decide whether it wants to proceed with such a large investment. There was even talks of director Ron Howard (Da Vinci Code) taking the property to another studio, possibly Warner Bros.

THR has now learned that Universal will be keeping "The Dark Tower," but not under the same terms. The plan is to lower the budget and Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend, Cinderella Man) is already re-writing the script with that in mind.

A start date has yet to be announced, but it will likely not be in the fall, as originally promised. Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) was attached to star, but that may now change as well. Stay tuned.

Martin Scorsese Confirmed to Remake "Taxi Driver"
Posted: May 13th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

About a year ago, it was revealed that director Lars Von Trier (Dogville, Antichrist) approached Martin Scorsese to make another version of his 2003 film "The Five Obstructions."

"Obstructions" was a challenge that Von Trier proposed to his colleague Jorgen Leth, which was to do a remake of his own 1967 film "The Perfect Human." The task was to remake the film five times, each time with a different obstacle, such as making it animated.

Von Trier proposed a similar challenge to Scorsese, asking him to remake his 1976 classic "Taxi Driver." At the time we weren't sure if there was any truth to this, but now comes word from ScreenDaily that Von Trier and Scorsese are "officially confirmed" to work together on the project.

According to Robert De Niro's previous comments, it is believed that one of the obstacles would be to tell the same story but from a point of view of a much older Travis Bickle (De Niro).

"The idea behind this obstructions thing is that you give each other tasks which will move you into an area where you have been reluctant to go yourself," Von Trier told ScreenDaily. "Under protest, you do that and then you enlarge your repertoire."

Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" Films May Not Happen

Posted: May 6th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Universal Pictures has been planning to turn Stephen King's novel series "The Dark Tower" into three feature films with a TV mini-series in between each film. Ron Howard is on board to direct, Akiva Goldsman wrote the script and Javier Bardem is set to star.

Unfortunately, there are big problems and the planned September start date has already been pushed back. The studio is now worried about the budget and may consider handing the franchise to another studio, which could mean the end of "The Dark Tower."

Many believe that Howard and Goldsman will not let the project die and some of the options are for Goldsman to take it to Warner Bros, which may fund it the films on its own or with Universal. At this point, the May 17th, 2013 is still in place, but that may change very soon. Stay tuned.

Keanu Reeves in Talks for Live-Action Akira Film
Over the years, actors like Brad Pitt, Justin Timberlake, James Franco, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Fassbender, Zac Efron and Robert Pattinson have been attached to the live-action "Akira" film, to be directed by Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli).

THR has now learned that Warner Bros is in talks with Keanu Reeves to play Kaneda, the gang leader. An offer has yet to be made, but sources claim that negotiations are going well.

In the script, the action moves from Neon-Tokyo to New Manhattan, where a biker gang leader tries to save his best friend from a medical experiment that threatens to unleash destructive powers.

The studio believes that bringing Reeves on board would give the project a better chance or getting another A-lister to take the role of Tetsuo, the best friend.

Rise Of The Apes Retitled Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes

published: 2011-04-06 17:41:01 Author: Eric Eisenberg
There is only one reason why a prequel to Planet of the Apes is coming out this summer: people know what Planet of the Apes is and the studio wants to capitalize on a known brand. Unfortunately, though, it would seem that some people couldn't make the connection between Rise of the Apes and Planet of the Apes, so Fox has decided to rename it.

ComicBookMovie has learned that after testing the title of the film, 20th Century Fox has decided to retitle the prequel, which will now be called Rise of the Planet of the Apes. SlashFilm has since confirmed the title change with the studio. This is not the first time that the project has undergone a name change, having previously been titled Caesar and Caesar: Rise of the Apes. Directed by Rupert Wyatt, the film stars James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Tom Felton, Andy Serkis and Brian Cox and will be released on August 5.

Wow. Move over, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, we now have a new challenger for Worst Title of 2011. How the hell did this get through so many levels without someone pointing out that it says "of the" twice? Did people really think that this was the best choice? I truly hope not.

Javier Bardem ‘Psychologically Confirmed’ to Star in Ron Howard’s THE DARK TOWER
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 1st, 2011
Back in January, it was reported that actor Javier Bardem had been offered the lead role in Ron Howard’s ambitious three film/TV series adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. While not much was heard after that, Howard’s producing partner Brian Grazer recently offered an update on Bardem’s involvement:
“Javier Bardem, that’s what we’re hoping. We’re in the process of trying to put that together. He’s locked in psychologically. He really wants to do it, so we’re absolutely rooting for him to do it.”
So it looks like Bardem’s keen to take the role on, and he’s currently in the negotiating phase. This could take a while, given that if he signs on it will likely be for three films and one “season” of the TV series. The adaptation is being spread out over three feature films, with two TV “seasons” bridging the gap between each film. In the interview with MTV, Grazer also revealed that the first story they’re exploring is The Gunslinger, which is the first book in King’s Dark Tower series. Hit the jump for more on The Dark Tower.

by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 1st, 2011
Quickly shaping up to be one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actors, Summit has announced that Nicholas Hoult has signed on to star in an adaptation of the Isaac Marion novel Warm Bodies. Hoult recently nabbed the lead in Bryan Singer’s epic adventure tale Jack the Giant Killer, and will next be seen as Beast in X-Men: First Class which opens in May. Lionsgate Moves Up ONE FOR THE MONEY to June 3
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: March 1st, 2011
Lionsgate has moved the Katherine Heigl-led comedy One for the Money from July 8 to June 3. On the original July release date, One for the Money would have been one of three comedies opposite The Zookeeper and Horrible Bosses. Variety suggests the switch is counterprogramming tactic; action tentpole X-Men: First Class is the only other film scheduled for June 3.
Heigl plays “a down-and-out woman who takes a last-ditch job working for her cousin’s bail bond business, and her biggest client turns out to be her high-school heartbreaker.” Jason O’Mara, John Leguizamo, and Debbie Reynolds also star, directed by Julie Anne Robinson (The Last Song) from a script by Liz Brixius (Nurse Jackie). One for the Money is based on the novel of the same name by Janet Evanovich; hit the jump for a synopsis.

Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, Hugh Jackman, Jude Law and Isla Fischer Join DreamWorks Animation’s RISE OF THE GUARDIANS

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 26th, 2011

number of actors have just been announced for DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming 3D film Rise of the Guardians. Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, Hugh Jackman, Jude Law and Isla Fischer will lend their voice talents to the animated flick, which is being executive produced by Guillermo del Toro. Based on William Joyce’s upcoming children’s book series The Guardians of Childhood, the project was originally announced in 2009 with Leonardo DiCaprio voicing Jack Frost, but Pine has now taken over that role. Joyce will co-direct with Peter Ramsey. The screenplay was written by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire, and follows a group of childhood legends. Variety describes the project thusly:
When Pitch (Law), an evil spirit akin to the Boogeyman, lays down the gauntlet to take over the world, the immortal Guardians must join forces for the first time to protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children all over the world.
Baldwin will voice Santa Claus, Fischer takes on the Tooth Fairy and Jackman will portray the Easter Bunny. Rise of the Guardians is set to be released in 3D on November 21, 2012.

Javier Bardem Offered Lead in Ron Howard’s THE DARK TOWER

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 26th, 2011

Well that was fast. Earlier today, we told you that Christian Bale was the current frontrunner to be cast as the lead in Ron Howard’s ambitious adaption of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. Now, it’s being reported that Javier Bardem has officially been offered the lead role of gunslinger Roland Deschain in the film.  The part has been one of the most hotly sought after in Hollywood at the moment, with the shortlist of actors being considered for the part growing every day. The book series will be adapted into three films by screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind), with a two-season TV series bridging the gaps between each film. Hit the jump for the details on how all of this will work, including how one of the TV seasons might be a prequel.
Included in Deadline’s report that Bardem has been offered the lead role of Deschain are details on exactly how this whole adaptation will work out. Apparently, Howard will direct the intial film, as well as the TV component that bridges the gap between the first and second film. After the second film, another TV component will follow but this one will be a prequel, showing Deschain as a young man. The third and final film would reunite the original cast and conclude the series.
So if Bardem signs on, he will appear in all three films and the first “season” of the TV component. In addition to the films, Goldsman is set to write the TV portions as well. Curiously, Deadline’s report states that Howard “plans at this point to direct the initial film as well as the TV component that will create a bridge to the second feature.” Does this mean that Howard won’t be helming the final two films and/or the second TV “season?”  At this point, nothing’s confirmed. What’s likely is that the director’s only contractually obligated to direct the first film and TV component, with an option to return to the director’s chair for the subsequent films if he so desires. However, this is all conjecture. Nothing’s officially been reported as to Howard’s directorial plans past the first film and TV season, so this is purely a guess. Expect more information on the project soon though, as it sounds like things are starting to pick up.

Is Christian Bale the Frontrunner to Play Roland Deschain in Ron Howard’s THE DARK TOWER?

by Jason Barr    Posted: January 26th, 2011

Almost a month ago, we reported that Javier Bardem and Viggo Mortensen were the leading candidates to take on the starring role of Roland Deschain in Ron Howard’s The Dark Tower adaptation.  Today, we’re updating the list of candidates to include recent Golden Globe-winner (and current Oscar-nominee) Christian Bale.  Reports are filing in that Bale has not only entered the casting equation but that he is currently director Ron Howard’s choice for the lead role.
For more on the role of Deschain as well as updates regarding possible candidates for female character Susannah Dean, hit the jump.
News of Bale’s potential involvement in The Dark Tower originates with the New York Post whose report is quick to point out that the role of Deschain is one of the most coveted roles currently floating around Hollywood.  The role’s popularity in mind, and with the first of three films in the Stephen King franchise not due out until May 17th, 2013, it may be safe to say that rumors regarding The Dark Tower’s leading man may change potential hands a few more times before any concrete announcements are made.

John Travolta in Talks to Play GOTTI

by Jason Barr    Posted: January 26th, 2011

John Travolta could soon be making a turn as one of America’s most recognizable criminals.  The actor is said to be in serious talks with producer Marc Fiore to make a turn as mob boss John Gotti, Sr. in Fiore Films’ Gotti.  When asked about the potential casting, Fiore told EW’s Inside Movies:
“We would love to have him. He’s a terrific actor. John Gotti, Sr. — he’s an icon. And so is Travolta … The Gottis have an image already. People know who they are. You can’t just be a good actor, you have to be a great actor who can become John Gotti.”
Nick Cassavetes (Alpha Dog) is also in talks with Fiore to direct Leo Rossi’s screenplay with the film aiming for a summer 2011 shoot.  Although Gotti has yet to officially name any cast members and/or a director, Fiore has his sights set high with the project telling the same EW report that, “it’s going to be the new Godfather.”  For his sake, I hope those who miss the moon really do land among the stars.

Rubén Blades Takes on SAFE HOUSE Starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds

by Jason Barr    Posted: January 26th, 2011

In what will be his first Hollywood film since 2003’s Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Rubén Blades has signed on to star in the Universal Pictures thriller Safe House.  TheWrap reports that Blades will join a cast that already features Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Nora Arnezeder, and Indian Outlaw-turned-actor Tim McGraw (“Indian Outlaw” quip brought to you courtesy of my curiously large amount of worthless country music knowledge).
Due out February 10, 2012, Safe House follow a CIA agent (Reynolds) who must transport a dangerous criminal (Washington) to safety.  Daniel Espinosa (Snabba Cash) will direct David Guggenheim’s 2010 Black List script.

Universal Considers Javier Bardem and Viggo Mortensen for Roland Deschain in THE DARK TOWER

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 30th, 2010

By virtue of ambition, Universal’s undertaking to adapt Stephen King’s The Dark Tower novels ought to be fun to track through the development process.  Ron Howard is signed to direct the first film of a planned trilogy.  The intent is to fill the gap between each film with the season of  Dark Tower on television.
The Hollywood agencies are understandably doing everything they can to get their clients in a room with the producers of such a hot property.  The studio has reportedly narrowed down the list of actors to play Roland Deschain, the main character from the books.  At the moment Javier Bardem is the leading candidate; Viggo Mortensen is a “close second.”  More after the jump:
The New York Post suggests that the same cast will be used for all three films and the television series, which should be viable for at least the secondary players.  But there may be some wiggle room with the lead.  The Post repeats what they’ve been hearing about the narrative structure of the project:
According to reports, they plan to start with an epic movie, then continue the story with the TV series, followed by a second film, and then a second TV season showing gunslinger Deschain as a young man. Then, the third movie will end the saga with Deschain as an older man.
Biutiful-movie-image-Javier-BardemSo the A-lister who eventually signs on to play Roland probably wouldn’t be involved with the second season.  I’m still eager to hear how many episodes they’re thinking about for each season, to get a better sense of just how grueling the Dark Tower schedule will be.
In the novels, King compares Roland to the ponchoed Clint Eastwood from the Man with No Name series, which is evident from the illustrations on the various book covers.  Bardem and (to a very slightly lesser extent) Mortensen both seem like a great fit for a very masculine character.  I sign off on either choice.
The first Dark Tower film is scheduled to hit theaters on May 17, 2013.  Here’s a brief character description for Roland Deschain:
At the start of the story, Roland is in his 40s, but is physically in his 50s at the end of The Gunslinger, when his age is arrested as he slumbers for centuries. Most of his hair is gray or white, but some remains black. His facial features are described as rough (although Susannah once compared them to that of a tired poet), and he has light blue eyes, often referred to by characters and Stephen King as “bombardier’s eyes.” Roland lost his right big toe and his right index and middle fingers, which is problematic as he is right-handed in everything other than shooting. He is a strong and disciplined man, capable of working through injuries and illnesses that would have killed or incapacitated another man. Roland is also unusually tall; at 14, he stood taller than the 16-year-old Susan, and, as an adult, his height exceeds that of his father…
Emotionally, Roland at times appears detached or unsympathetic, often reacting uncaring or angry at signs of cowardice or self-pity, yet he possess a strong sense of heroism, often attempting to help those in need. He is shown to be mentally scarred from the deaths of all his friends and family, often thinking about their words and actions, and he is said (on more than one occasion by himself) that he greatly lacks imagination. He also describes himself as “not very good in thinking around corners”, meaning he has a very practical character, never really seeking other meanings or intentions behind what he sees, although he is very perceptive and intelligent. Cuthbert, Roland’s best friend in his childhood, once said the gears in Roland’s head turn slow, but grind extremely well. Roland is not very patient, especially when he is under stress, and often makes a rotating gesture with his hand, which means ‘go on, hurry, move on’ in conversations. Similarly, he prefers not to over-plan his actions, trusting greatly in his instinct and skill at improvising according to the situation. He is also shown not to have a great sense of humor: though he knows a lot of riddles he rarely jokes and is visibly irritated at times when Eddie (and in the past, Cuthbert) joke around. Roland is not one for small talk. [Wikipedia]
And here is the synopsis for the series:
In the story, Roland Deschain is the last living member of a knightly order known as gunslingers and the last of the line of “Arthur Eld”, his world’s analogue of King Arthur. The world he lives in is quite different from our own, yet it bears striking similarities to it. Politically organized along the lines of a feudal society, it shares technological and social characteristics with the American Old West but is also magical. While the magical aspects are largely gone from Mid-World, some vestiges of them remain, along with the relics of a highly advanced, but long vanished, society. Roland’s quest is to find the Dark Tower, a fabled building said to be the nexus of all universes. Roland’s world is said to have “moved on”, and indeed it appears to be coming apart at the seams as mighty nations have been torn apart by war, entire cities and regions vanish without a trace and time does not flow in an orderly fashion. Even the Sun sometimes rises in the north and sets in the east. As the series opens, Roland’s motives, goals and age are unclear, though later installments shed light on these mysteries. [Wikipedia]

Brad Pitt Confirmed for Andrew Dominik’s COGAN’S TRADE

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 30th, 2010

Last month, we told you that The Assassination of Jesse James director Andrew Dominik was looking to reteam with a few of the actors from that film for his next feature, Cogan’s Trade. Well, it looks like at least one of the James gang will for sure be reuniting with Dominik: Brad Pitt. Pitt is set to star in the titular role of Jackie Cogan in the adaptation of the George V. Higgins novel.
Cogan’s Trade tells the story of an enforcer, Cogan, who is hired by the mob to investigate a high stakes poker heist. Other names mentioned to possibly join Pitt in the film include Jesse James co-stars Casey Affleck and Sam Rockwell, as well as Bill Murray, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of the novel.
The Assassination of Jesse James is criminally underrated, and was absolutely one of my favorite films of 2007. The thought of Dominik teaming up with Pitt again, especially if even half of the rumored cast signs on, is very good news. Scene [via /Film] reports that filming is expected to start on the flick in the New Orleans area in March.
Here’s the synopsis of Cogan’s Trade by George V. Higgins
[Cogan's Trade] tracks Jackie Cogan’s career in a gangland version of law and order. For Cogan is an enforcer; and when the Mob’s rules get broken, he gets hired to ply his trade — murder. In the gritty, tough-talking pages of Higgins’s 1974 national best-seller, Cogan is called in when a high-stake card game under the protection of the Mob is heisted. Expertly, with a ruthless businessman’s efficiency, a shrewd sense of other people’s weaknesses, and a style as cold as his stare, Cogan moves with reliable precision to restore the status quo as ill-conceived capers and double-dealing shenanigans erupt into high-voltage violence. Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman are being considered for Ron Howard’s upcoming movie based on Stephen King’s famous creation The Dark Tower!
The project has yet to be green-lit but Ron says he “really can’t stop thinking about it.”
“We’ve been meeting and talking and I’ve been reading and researching and just kind of living with it,” he told the Los Angeles Times.
In addition to Hugh and David, who starred together in Broadway’s A Steady Rain, Ron says Jon Hamm has been mentioned for the role of Roland the Gunslinger.
“On The Dark Tower fansites they’re all about Viggo [Mortensen],” he added.
The film is targeted for a release in 2013, followed by a television series, a second movie, the continuation of the TV series, and then the final film in the trilogy.
