FilmDistrict to Release THE RUM DIARY Starring Johnny Depp on October 28th
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 29th, 2011
We haven’t heard much about Bruce Robinson’s adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s The Rum Diary since we ran some images from the flick last June. It was slightly worrisome that a movie that starred Johnny Depp, Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Michael Rispoli, Richard Jenkins, and Giovanni Ribisi was sitting on the shelf, but now that worry can be set aside. FilmDistrict has announced that they have picked up the film and will release in the heart of awards season on October 28th.

The story centers on itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Depp) who moves to Puerto Rico and eventually discovers his voice as a writer and his integrity. Hit the jump for a full synopsis and the press release. The only other films currently opening on October 28th are the horror flick Dibbuk Box and Andrew Niccol’s sci-fi thriller Now starring Amanda Seyfried and Justin Timberlake.

Hailee Steinfeld Attached to SLEEPING BEAUTY Spec Script
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 29th, 2011
Hailee Steinfeld may have missed out on The Hunger Games due to her age, but the young Oscar-nominee is showing no signs of slowing down. In addition to circling an adaptation of the upcoming novel Forgotten, Steinfeld is now attached to lead a re-imagining of Sleeping Beauty. According to Deadline, Lindsay Devlin’s script tells the story from the eponymous princess’ point of view and has her fighting to find a way out of the dream world. While I’m getting a little sick of these re-tooled fairy tales, I like the premise of this one. The story of waiting for a prince is stale and a smart director could have some fun telling the tale from Aurora’s point of view.

However, if Sleeping Beauty moves forward (the script is currently out to buyers) it will have plenty of competition when it comes to fairy tale re-imaginings. Hit the jump for list of just some of the public domain properties that Hollywood is banking on.

Teresa Palmer in Talks to Co-Star with Nicholas Hoult in Zombie Love Story WARM BODIES
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 29th, 2011
Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) is in talks to star alongside Nicholas Hoult (A Single Man) in Jonathan Levine’s adaptation of Isaac Marion’s upcoming novel Warm Bodies. Per Heat Vision, the story is described as a cross between Shaun of the Dead (yay!) and Twilight (nay!) and “follows an existentially tormented zombie named R that begins an unlikely friendship with the human girlfriend (Palmer) of one of his victims. The blossoming relationship starts a chain reaction that will transform him, his fellow zombies and maybe the whole lifeless world.” Palmer’s character is the daughter of one of the “military leaders who is tiring of a life of constantly fighting off zombie attacks.”

Palmer recently co-starred in back-to-back duds with I Am Number Four and Take Me Home Tonight, but I don’t think the short-comings of those films are her fault. She showed she can be a bad-ass in I Am Number Four and she demonstrated charm in TMHT, so it’s really a matter of finding the right project for her talents. Perhaps Warm Bodies will be it. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

James Spader, Ryan Phillippe, and Carla Gugino Join Eric Bana in Sheldon Turner’s BY VIRTUE FALL
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 29th, 2011
Last summer we reported that Eric Bana and Colin Farrell were in talks to co-star in By Virtue Fall, the directorial debut of Up in the Air screenwriter Sheldon Turner. Farrell eventually dropped off the project but Bana has signed on and according to 24 Frames, he’ll be joined by James Spader, Ryan Phillippe, and Carla Gugino. The story concerns “two ATF agents who find themselves on opposite sides of the friendship divide after one sells out the other.”

Bana tells 24 Frames that he hopes to make By Virtue Fall his next project after finishing the thriller Blackbird with Olivia Wilde. He’ll be seen in theaters this week alongside Cate Blanchett and Saoirse Ronan in Joe Wright’s Hanna.

Warner Bros. to Reboot BATMAN after THE DARK KNIGHT RISES; Christopher Nolan to Remain on as Producer
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 29th, 2011
Christopher Nolan has publicly stated that The Dark Knight Rises will be his final Batman film, and Warner Bros. is already looking ahead to the future of the franchise. As we reported last night, the studio is currently planning a Justice League movie for 2013 and Warner Bros. president Jeff Robinov tells Hero Complex that scripts are being written for Flash and Wonder Woman (the Wonder Woman project would exist separately from the upcoming NBC show). But most intriguing is what the studio plans to do with its marquee superhero, Batman:

“We have the third Batman, but then we’ll have to reinvent Batman…” says Robinov. “Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what the next phase is.”

Hit the jump for my thoughts on the future of the Batman franchise.

Only Christopher Nolan Knows "The Dark Knight Rises" Ending
Posted: March 28th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

In an interview with AbsoluteRadio, Gary Oldman talked about the level of secrecy around the script for "The Dark Knight Rises" that Christopher Nolan has set up.

"To get into the production office, you have to have someone meet you and there are keys and various doors that lock," he explained. "The script you read in the production office, and there is no ending because [Nolan] tells you the ending so that it doesn't leak and get out, and people spoil it on the internet."

Oldman also mentioned that his character will have interaction with Bane, played by Tom Hardy. "I have quite a bit to do with Tom in this one," he said.

Gary Oldman Says Christopher Nolan May Return for "Batman 4"
Posted: March 28th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

DigitalSpy caught up with Gary Oldman at the Jameson Empire Awards and asked him to confirm that "The Dark Knight Rises" is the last Batman installment that Christopher Nolan will direct.

"Chris is always negotiating," said Oldman. "So when he says that [he won't come back], I don't know."

Nolan is known for playing games. After "Batman Begins," he pretended to be unsure about returning to the franchise for both "The Dark Knight" and "The Dark Knight Rises." He ended up getting his way every time and Warner Bros even funded "Inception" as a way to bring Nolan back for another Batman movie.

This time, however, he actually stated that "The Dark Knight Rises" will be his last. But he has yet to make that clear to the cast, because even Christian Bale isn't sure that Nolan is done with Batman. Otherwise, the actor wouldn't be promising to reprise his role as many times as Nolan needs him.

The Dark Knight Rises Gets Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the Holiday Killer

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is The Holiday KillerThe plan was to keep Joseph Gordon-Levitt's role in director Christopher Nolan's upcoming sequel The Dark Knight Rises a secret. The actor was confirmed to be involved with the project on Friday. Now, an insider from Christopher Nolan's camp has stepped forward to reveal more information about this trilogy ending sequel.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be playing Alberto Falcone, aka The Holiday Killer. The character figured heavily in the original comic book story The Long Halloween, in which Alberto, refused a place at his father's side in the Gotham Mafia, goes on a Halloween killing spree. He then continues to pop up on various holidays, taking out members of the criminal underworld. He is captured by Bruce Wayne after murdering Sal Maroni.

Tom Wilkinson portrayed Alberto's Mafia chieftain father Carmine Falcone in Batman Begins, which brings this trilogy full-circle. It is not clear at this point how The Holiday Killer will figure into the storyline of The Dark Knight Rises, which also includes villains Catwoman and Bane.

At this time, Christopher Nolan is continuing to fine-tune his script. Production on The Dark Knight Rises is set to begin later this year.

The Dark Knight Rises comes to theaters July 20th, 2012 and stars Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

Taylor Kitsch, Salma Hayek, and Olivia Wilde Under Consideration for Oliver Stone’s SAVAGES
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: March 19th, 2011
We heard earlier in the week Aaron Johnson (Kick Ass) was offered the role of Ben in Oliver Stone’s adaptation of Savages. Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) is now in talks to play Chon, who grows marijuana with Ben in Laguna Beach in the novel by Don Winslow. The story centers around the boys’ struggle with a Mexican drug cartel that tries to muscle in on Ben and Chon’s business, even kidnapping their “beautiful young playmate and accomplice” Ophelia. Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) was in talks to play Ophelia, but had to drop out due to her commitment to The Hunger Games. Deadline indicates that Stone is looking at Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy) and other unspecified candidates similar to Ms. Wilde for the role. Likewise, Stone is talking to Salma Hayek to play the cartel matriarch, “an iron-fisted beauty who becomes intrigued and practically maternal over the kidnapped [Ophelia].”

Universal Pictures is reportedly the frontrunner among three studios to land the distribution deal for Savages. Filming is scheduled to begin in June. Read the book synopsis after the break.

Stephen King in Talks to Write "The Walking Dead" Episode
Posted: March 20th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

We recently heard that Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) passed on the chance to direct an episode of "The Walking Dead," claiming that he's a huge fan of the show and didn't want to mess it up.

Now comes word that author Stephen King is in talks to write a Season 2 episode. This isn't much of a surprise since King has a long-standing relationship with show creator Frank Darabont, who adapted King's "Shawshank Redemption," "The Green Mile" and "The Mist" for the big screen.

The second season of "The Walking Dead" will air on AMC this Fall, but Darabont won't be directing the premiere episode. He will, however, likely helm an episode later in the season.

Christopher Nolan Wanted for "Blade Runner" Sequel/Prequel

Posted: March 4th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
We just reported that Alcon Entertainment has acquired the rights to "Blade Runner" with plans of developing a sequel or prequel to the original film.

io9 has now caught up with the producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson to find out if they are leaning toward making a sequel or a prequel. "We don't know, we just don't know yet," said Kosove. "We will have a process where we will hear different ideas from writers or from potential directors before determining."

When asked who they would like to direct their new "Blade Runner" film, Kosove replied: "Our friend Chris Nolan who we did 'Insomnia' [with]. The methodology that Chris Nolan brought to Batman is precisely what we aspire to whomever the filmmaker is, whether Ridley [Scott] comes back and joins us or it's someone else."

It's not impossible that Nolan may be in talks. Alcon is a close partner with Warner Bros, which has been behind most of Nolan's films.

Kevin Spacey produced David Fincher's "The Social Network" and the two men are now re-teaming for "House of Cards" television show. Fincher will direct the pilot episode, while Spacey is set to executive produce and star.

"House of Cards" is based on a book by Michael Dobbs. It is set at the end of Margaret Thatcher's tenure as prime minister and follows a British politician with his eye on the top job. Fincher's version will be set in the US and is written by playwright/screenwriter Beau Willimon (The Ides of March).

In 1990, the book was adapted by the BBC as a mini-series written by Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones's Diary) and starring Ian Richardson (From Hell). It went on to win a BAFTA award for Richardson and an Emmy for Davies.

Another "Bridget Jones" Book and Movie in the Works

Posted: March 4th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
"Bridget Jones" creator Helen Fielding has confirmed that she is writing the third installment in the best-selling book series. In fact, she recently read three pages from it at Damian Barr's Literary Salon.

Fielding added that a new film has already been discussed. "I will be working on both the book and the film but I don't know if they are the same thing yet," she said. "It's not been decided."

One of the themes of the third book will be Bridget having a mid-thirties baby crisis. And if the film is ever made, Fielding would like to see Hugh Grant and Colin Firth return as Daniel Cleaver and Mark Darcy. "I think the idea of Mark and Daniel and Bridget in advanced stages of deterioration could be quite fun," she said. "We're making a comedy, after all."

UK Poster for LIMITLESS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 21st, 2011

As most folks take the day off to celebrate our nation’s Presidents (because I’m sure that’s how people are spending their free time: celebrating US Presidents), it’s a bit of a slow news day.  With that in mind, we bring you the UK poster for Limitless.  Even on a slow news day, I would usually skip over this, but the poster makes Bradley Cooper look so creepy that I had to share it with you.  It’s like the folks who designed this poster said, “We can’t find an image of Bradley Cooper and photoshop is broken.  I know!  There’s a new Bradley Cooper wax statue at the local wax figure museum!  Let’s go borrow it!  Chip-chip!  Cheeri-o!” (It’s a British poster and I’m 99% certain that’s how all British people end their conversations and this poster could have only been made by Brits because — 0h, no — I’ve run out of crappy-logic juice).
Hit the jump to check out the poster.  Limitless also stars Abbie Cornish, Anna Friel, and Robert De Niro.  It opens in the US on March 18th and the in UK on March 23rd.

Kevin Costner Up for “Key Role” in SUPERMAN Reboot

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 21st, 2011

While Kevin Costner has had a less-than-stellar track record for the last two decades (although there are some gems like A Perfect World and Open Range), he does deserve some credit for staying away from sequels, remakes, and franchise pictures.  But now it looks like he may be signing on to Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman reboot.  Deadline reports that Costner is up for a “key role” in the picture.  If I had to guess at what the role could be, I’d say it’s either Superman’s birth father Jor-El, surrogate parent Pa Kent, or Daily Planet editor Perry White.  Currently, the only actor cast in the film is Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent.  The film is currently set for release next holiday season.
Costner most recently co-starred in The Company Men.  Last year, we reported that he was planning to get back in the director’s chair for the World War II action-adventure, A Little War of Our Own.

Tom Hardy Talks Briefly About Playing Bane in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

by Jason Barr    Posted: February 21st, 2011

In case anyone, for any reason whatsoever, had concerns that Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises would have a lot in common with Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin (you know, outside of featuring characters named Batman and Bane), Tom Hardy is here to put those fears to rest. In a recent interview with the UK’s Channel 4 talk show Alan Carr: Chatty Man, the actor slated to play the Batman foe confirmed:
“Chris Nolan, again, will revisit that territory entirely so I wouldn’t go by that [Schumacher's Batman and Robin]. Plus, that’s a lot of weight to put on and I’ve got to start shooting in May. So I’ve got to get back up to that size again [presumably "again" referring to his bulked turn in Bronson] and I’ve got to get up to about 13-and-a-half or 14 stone [approx. 200 lbs.]. I’m 12-and-a-bit now [approx. 170 lbs.], so I’ve got three months to do that.”
To check out a video of the interview, hit the jump. Hardy will join Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises on July 20th, 2012.

Christopher Walken, Ashley Greene, Shirley MacLaine, and Adam Beach to Star in THE BOOM BOOM ROOM

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 14th, 2011

Christopher Walken, Ashley Greene, Shirley MacLaine, and Adam Beach will star in the mystical drama The Boom Boom Room.  In a slightly bizarre pairing, Bono will be executive producing the film alongside acclaimed art house director Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire).  There are no details on the plot other than it’s “a magical tale set in a desert milieu.”  Writer/director Lian Lunson tells Screen Daily “This has been a vision of mine for a very long time. The story captures the essences of everyday life but in a fairy tale landscape.  It is a dream to be working with Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Walken, both of whom are playing roles unlike anything they’ve done before.”  I’ll pay $10 just to hear Christopher Walken say “Boom Boom Room”, but only on the condition that I also get it as a ringtone.

Christopher Nolan has been trying to keep production on The Dark Knight Rises as secret as possible, but the first set photo may have already leaked out.  The set photo shows the front of Arkham Asylum on what appears to be a soundstage.  The person who posted the photo says “my good mate who is working on set at cardington where it’s being shot sent me this.”  It’s possible that this is a leftover set photo from either Batman Begins or The Dark Knight, but if that’s the case, then we will be denied the fun of over-speculating on how Arkham figures into the plot of TDKR.

Has Marion Cotillard Been Cast in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES?

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 13th, 2011

File this under rumor for now, but Marion Cotillard may be joining the cast of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises after all. Le Figaro, France’s oldest and second largest newspaper, is reporting that Cotillard has signed on to join Nolan’s third Batman film. This is quite surprising news, given that just last month Cotillard announced she was pregnant, seemingly taking her out of the running for any role in Dark Knight Rises. However, the actress is due in May, and with the film shooting from May until November, there could be ample time for her to recover and appear in the film after all. The report is in French, but Batman News (who brought the story to our attention) translated the article as follows:
“The actress, who is expecting a child in the spring with Guillaume Canet, will be scarce this year. She’ll do a single film and her choice fell on Batman 3.”
The newspaper appears to be legit, and not simply a tabloid. There may, in fact, be some truth to this. Cotillard turned in a brilliant performance in Nolan’s Inception, and one would assume that she’d be eager to work with him again. Could Talia al Ghul be in the film after all? Nothing’s been officially confirmed, and this could very well turn out to simply be a rumor, but it sure would be fantastic if it turns out to be true. The Dark Knight Rises is slated for a July 20th, 2012 release.

Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman in Talks to Join STOKER

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 11th, 2011

Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman and likely-Oscar-winner Colin Firth are in negotiations to star in Stoker.  The film is the English-language debut of Oldboy director Chan Wook-Park.  As we reported a couple weeks ago, Mia Wasikowska has signed on to play the lead role of India Stoker, “an eccentric teen whose enigmatic and estranged uncle returns to the family after the death of the girl’s father.”  Jodie Foster was set to play the girl’s mother, but dropped out.  Now it looks like Kidman will play the mom while Firth will play the uncle.
The way the shooting schedule is shaking out, it looks like Stoker will be Firth’s first film (say that five times fast) since The King’s Speech became the Oscar front-runner and scored at the box office.  While he’s also signed on to star in the remake of Gambit, 24 Frames reports that Stoker is likely to go in front of cameras first.  As for Kidman, she’ll next be seen in the hostage drama Trespass with Nicolas Cage.

Anne Hathaway May Join ROCK OF AGES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 11th, 2011

Earlier today, we reported that Tom Cruise was in final talks to star in Adam Shankman’s adaptation of the hit musical Rock of Ages.  Other actors reportedly circling the film include Mary J. Blige, Gwyneth Paltrow, Russell Brand, and Alec Baldwin.  You can now add Anne Hathaway to their ranks as Deadline reports that the Oscar host is in talks to costar.  According to Deadline, Hathaway is up for the role “the uptight journalist who intends to eviscerate Cruise’s decadent rock star Stacee Jax with an expose. Instead, she falls for the charms of the rocker, and after they duet to the Foreigner song ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’, they engage in a wild, passionate bedroom romp.”  Hathaway showed she had singing chops when she sang with Hugh Jackman on stage at the 2009 Oscars.  She’s also planning to play Judy Garland in a biopic about the singer/actress.
Deadline reports that the question of whether Hathaway signs or not is if the Rock of Ages schedule will work with The Dark Knight Rises (Hathaway is playing Selina Kyle/Catwoman).  Hit the jump for her other potential projects.

Gerard Butler to Star in Curtis Hanson’s MAVERICKS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 11th, 2011

Gerard Butler has signed on to play surfer Rick “Frosty” Hesson in Curtis Hanson’s Mavericks.  We first reported on the film about a year ago when we learned that Hanson was developing a movie based on the late legendary surfer Jay Moriarty and that Sean Penn was considering the Hesson role.  According to Variety, the story will center on Moriarty’s “quest to ride the iconic Northern California break known as Mavericks, where winter swells bring in treacherous waves the size of five-story buildings. Moriarity trained for more than a year under Hesson, forging a relationship that transformed both their lives.”  Hanson, whose last film was 2007’s Lucky You, will direct from a script by Kario Salem and Brandon Hooper.
While Lucky You was a misfire, Hanson tends to deliver solid movies and I’m interested to see what he’ll do with this story.  I’m also thrilled to see Gerard Butler in a movie that isn’t a disposable, lowest-common-denominator, get-a-new-agent rom-com.

Christopher Nolan Plans to Direct Howard Hughes Biopic after THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 11th, 2011

Christopher Nolan has previously said that The Dark Knight Rises will be his last Batman film, so what comes next?  According to Vulture, Nolan will pursue a biopic about billionaire-filmmaker-engineer-nutjob Howard Hughes that he shelved when Martin Scorsese came out with The Aviator in 2004.  However, while Scorsese’s film drew heavily from Charles Higham’s biography Howard Hughes: The Secret Life and focused on the first half of Hughes’ life, it didn’t really embrace how batshit-loony Hughes went in the latter half of his life.  Nolan’s film, will ride Hughes’ crazy-pants way-of-the-future and pull from Michael Drosnin’s Citizen Hughes: The Power, the Money and the Madness. Drosnin, a former Washington Post and Wall Street Journal reporter, pulled from over 3,000 pages of Hughes’s own handwritten memoranda, which leaked after the billionaire’s office was burglarized in 1975.  I hope the burglars were specifically after the memoranda because as we all know, rich guy madness scribblings are worth their weight in gold.
Hit the jump for more on this exciting project.
