Today we have the poster for "The Iceman," which is based on the true story of Richard "The Ice Man" Kuklinski and stars James Franco, Michael Shannon, and Benicio Del Toro.


The story revolves around Richard Kuklinski (Michael Shannon), a notorious mob contract killer and loving family man. He earned his nick-name by freezing the bodies of his victims, disguising the time of death and throwing police off-track. He was a man who used his tendencies toward violence and detachment from consequence to create an idyllic family life. His family and neighbors believed he was an average businessman, having no idea about his deadly alternate life. Kuklinski killed over one hundred people during his life. He never felt remorse for anything he had done, except hurting his family.


Del Toro co-stars as Kuklinski's employer, the notorious mobster Roy Demeo, and Franco plays his mentor assassin known as Mr. Softee.

"Red" Sequel Already Has a Script

During the premiere of "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," MTV caught up with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who confirmed that a sequel to "Red" is in the works.


"We're trying to put it together," he said. "We just got a script and it's really good. We're all just now discussing how to put it all back together again."


The first film stars Helen Mirren, Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, and Morgan Freeman. Di Bonaventura says the plan is to bring back the same cast as well as add some new faces.


"I think the audience would be disappointed if we didn't bring back the crew, but we've got to freshen the crew," he explained. "We'll bring in one or two characters that'll play a really big part — maybe three, but definitely one or two."

Michael Shannon Cast as General Zod in SUPERMAN Reboot MAN OF STEEL

Viggo Mortensen was never able to find the right hole in his schedule to play General Zod in the upcoming Superman reboot, now officially titled Man of Steel.  Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, however, landed on a fantastic alternative: Michael Shannon.  Shannon was rumored for an unspecified villain role last month — the studios have announced today he will play Zod.  Director Zack Snyder remarked,

“Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t.  Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”

I could not agree more.  Henry Cavill will star as Clark Kent/Superman.  The supporting cast includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent.  Read the official announcement after the jump.

Teaser Trailer for THE WOMAN IN BLACK Starring Daniel Radcliffe

The teaser trailer for the ghost thriller The Woman in Black has gone online. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, the film is based on the classic ghost story by Susan Hill that centers on a young lawyer visiting a remote English town that, naturally, holds many ghostly secrets. The trailer is very much a teaser, and doesn’t really give much of the plot away, but I’m liking the air of creepiness and general unease that it suggests.

New Images from DRIVE and LOCK-OUT

Steve is currently wandering around CinemaCon and in addition to snapping photos of promo posters, he also picked up some images from the upcoming films Drive and Lock-Out.  For those unfamiliar with the flicks, Drive is directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson) and centers on a stunt driver (Ryan Gosling) who moonlights as a wheelman for mobsters.  When he agrees to help the husband of his beautiful neighbor (Carey Mulligan), matters go awry and he must protect the neighbor and her son. The film has an incredible cast that also includes Christina Hendricks, Bryan Cranston, Ron Perlman, Oscar Isaac, and Albert Brooks.

As for Lock-Out, Guy Pearce talked to Steve about the film and said that the sci-fi action-adventure is “a rescue story, it’s set slightly in the future,” and his character must go on a mission to save the President’s daughter from an orbiting prison.  The film is produced by Luc Besson and also stars Maggie Grace and Peter Stormare.

THE DEAD CIRCUS to Start Filming This Summer with James Marsden, Melissa Leo, Michael Shannon and Michael C. Hall Set to Star

The film adaptation of John Kaye’s novel The Dead Circus is about to get rolling, with producers eyeing a summer start date. The film stars James Marsden, Melissa Leo, Michael Shannon and Michael C. Hall and tells a fictious story based on the non-ficticious death of singer Bobby Fuller. Written by Adam Davenport and John Kaye, the film is set to mark the directorial debut of Davenport. Deadline reports that Palermo pictures wants to shoot the flick this summer.

Marsden is set to play Charles Manson, with Leo playing a Manson Family matriarch who comes out of hiding to give a few hints to a screenwriter trying to solve Fuller’s mysterious death (ruled a suicide, even though the singer was battered and had gasoline poured down his throat). Bill Murray To Play Franklin Roosevelt In Hyde Park On the Hudson

When you think of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, what do you think of? His structuring of the New Deal to help our country out the Great Depression? His fireside chats, used to put the entire country at ease? His negotiations with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin to help end World War II? How about the time that he blew up a golf course to try and kill a gopher? Oh, wait. That was Bill Murray in Caddyshack. I guess I got confused because Murray's going to be playing the 32nd president in a new film.

Vulture reports that Murray has signed on to play FDR in Hyde Park On the Hudson, an adaptation of a British radio play. Directed by Roger Michell, the film is set in 1939 when the King and Queen came to America - the first time a reigning monarch had ever done so - but the focus will be on the affair between the president and his distant cousin, Margaret Stuckley. Adapted by Richard Nelson, who also wrote the play, the film will go into production this July.

The article believes that this film will have "Murray in serious-actor mode," but I really hope it's not. There's a lot of humor that can be found in this situation and if played to the right pitch could be brilliant. It's also worth noting that the King at the time was George VI, so how about having Colin Firth come back and reprise his Oscar winning performance? Amy Adams Offered Role in ROCK OF AGES

Amy Adams is reportedly being “heavily courted” to join Adam Shankman’s upcoming musical, Rock of Ages.  Deadline reports that Adams is being offered the role of a journalist who plans to write a scathing expose of decaent rock star Stacee Jax (played by Tom Cruise) but ends up sleeping with him instead after they do a duet of Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is”.  The role was initially offered to Anne Hathaway, but the scheduling conflicted with her time playing Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises.
Adams previously did some fantastic singing in Enchanted and she’s set to sing again in The Muppets.  If Adams signs on to Rock of Ages, she’ll join not only Cruise, but also Mary J. Blige, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, and Julianne Hough.  Deadline reports that we should know by early next week if Adams has taken the gig.  Rock of Ages is currently set to open on June 1, 2012.

Joel Edgerton, Dominic Cooper, Garrett Hedlund, and Luke Evans Testing for Lead in THE BOURNE LEGACY

With Universal’s The Bourne Legacy staring down the barrel of an August 3, 2012 release, the studio is finally bringing some tangible casting work to the forefront.  Per Deadline, four actors are currently scheduled to screen test for the film’s male lead at the beginning of April: Joel Edgerton (forthcoming remake of The Thing), Dominic Cooper (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy), and Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans).

While the report is quick to mention that the actor eventually cast for the role may fall outside of the four listed here (for example, both Shia LaBeouf and Taylor Kitsch are believed to be in the mix, although neither is expected to test for the role at this time), this news at least gives fans of the franchise an idea of how Universal is approaching writer/director Tony Gilroy’s spin-off installment. It is believed that the studio sees the Bourne franchise itself as being more important to the film’s overall success than a huge name lead to place at the top of its marketing materials. With this in mind, and with production set to get underway later this year, I expect this story to be the tip of the casting iceberg surrounding The Bourne Legacy.

Michael Shannon and Edgar Ramirez Vying for Villain Role in SUPERMAN Reboot?

Director Zack Snyder is currently filling out his cast for the upcoming Superman reboot and, unsurprisingly, the rumor mill is heating up with names of actors in line to play the villain in the film. Henry Cavill is set as the Man of Steel himself, with Kevin Costner and Diane Lane poised to play his adoptive parents. Now, Deadline is reporting that the parties-that-be are interested in actor Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire) for the villain. Shannon’s a supremely talented guy, and has gained considerable (and well-deserved) recognition as of late, following his Oscar-nominated turn in Sam Mendes’ Revolutionary Road.

In addition, Latino Review reports that Edgar Ramirez (Carlos) is being eyed for the villain role as well. Exactly which villain Superman will face off against in the film is currently unknown. Now, this being a comic-book movie and all, these casting reports could very well turn out to be simply nothing more than rumor. At this point, no one’s saying for sure. But with production set to start relatively soon on the Christopher Nolan-produced flick, expect more casting announcements/rumors in the coming weeks.

Juno Temple Confirmed for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

Last week, we reported that UK actress Juno Temple (Atonement) was in talks to join Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. As of today, those talks have officially ended as Temple has been confirmed for her role as a “street-smart Gotham girl.” While Variety fails to offer up more details regarding Temple’s character, rumors and speculation are already stacking up on the interwebs (hard to believe, right?) that Temple could be playing any Bat-character from Catwoman-sidekick Holly Robinson to current Batgirl Stephanie Brown.

Earlier this week, Samuel L. Jackson confirmed his involvement in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers. The actor also stated that he was testing with five female actresses jostling for the role of his new sidekick (since, apparently, Scarlett Johansson is too big to be a sidekick). Deadline reports that TV star Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) is close to landing the role of SHIELD executive director Maria Hill, and that a deal could be done long before we’ve gotten over our Super Bowl XLV hangovers.

First Synopsis for David Koepp’s PREMIUM RUSH Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Shannon

David Koepp, the director and writer of 2008’s Ghost Town and writer of action blockbusters like Spider-Man, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, has been working on a new action thriller entitled Premium Rush – which he wrote and directed.  You’ll remember the films star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, ended up with 31 stitches during the filming of one of the actions scenes back in July. You can check out pictures of Levitt on set here.  Anyway, we’ve been sent an early synopsis for the film and you can check it out after the jump.
Premium Rush is produced by Columbia Pictures and also stars Jamie Chung (Sorority Row) Dania Ramirez (Entourage) and Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire).  It’s slated for a January 13^th, 2012 release:
“A New York bike messenger is given an envelope by a young woman at an uptown Manhattan college and is told he has 90 minutes to deliver it to an address in Chinatown. Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand Pick Up MY MOTHER’S CURSE

Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand have signed on to star in Paramount’s road-trip comedy My Mother’s Curse.  Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) will direct the Dan Fogelman (Cars) script which pairs Rogen and the two-time Oscar-winner as mother and son.  Per THR, Fogelman’s script tells the story of an inventor (Rogen) who “invites his mother on a cross-country road trip as he tries to sell his new product.”  As the story goes, in the process, Streisand’s character is also reunited with a lost love.

In addition to starring and writing respectively, Rogen, Streisand, and Fogelman will act as executive producers on My Mother’s Curse alongside fellow exec. producer David Ellison.  Lorne Michaels and Evan Goldberg will also act as producers on the film which is scheduled to begin shooting this spring.

SOUL SURFER Trailer Starring AnnaSophia Robb, Dennis Quaid, and Helen Hunt

A trailer for veteran television director Sean McNamara’s (personal favorite Even Stevens) Soul Surfer has landed online.  Starring AnnaSophia Robb (Bridge to Terabithia), Dennis Quaid, and Helen Hunt, the sports drama tells the true story of teen surfer Bethany Hamilton who lost her arm in a shark attack in 2003 only to return to the top of the competitive surfing world by 2005.

Sundance 2011: TAKE SHELTER Review

Before the screening of Take Shelter, writer-director Jeff Nichols explained to the audience that he was attempting to tap into an emotion of dread and anxiety.  For the first act of his movie, he’s wildly successful at capturing that feeling.  Vivid, nightmarish dream sequences set the film up as a paranoid thriller.  But then Nichols hits the breaks, stops the dreams, and the tension slowly leaves the picture as it moves at a glacial pace.  While he’s able to eventually pick it back up at the end and come to an interesting conclusion, he is never able to reconnect with his audience.

Take Shelter opens with Curtis (Michael Shannon) having a vision of a storm.  Thick, viscous rain falls from the sky and thunder shakes the landscape.  The vision passes and Curtis goes back to his normal life as a family man with loving wife Sam (Jessica Chastain) and daughter Hannah (Tova Stewart).  But then Curtis tarts to have nightmares.  The nightmares always begin with a storm and end with Curtis waking up in pain and paranoia.  He believes that his nightmares are premonitions of an apocalypse and so he takes to expanding the storm shelter in his backyard.  Desperate to protect his family, Curtis has only two dark options: either he’s wrong and he’s starting to show signs of schizophrenia like his mother (Kathy Baker) or it’s the end of the world.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES to Film in Bucharest? [Update: Filming "At Least Partially in Los Angeles"]

Following yesterday’s huge Batman news that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle and Tom Hardy will be playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, comes word that director Christopher Nolan may be shooting some of the film in Bucharest. Nolan is known for favoring actual locations rather than filming on backlots/stages (Inception alone was filmed on three different continents), so this news really isn’t all that surprising. And yet, it’s Batman news, so it’s immediately 500% more interesting.

The Bucharest Mayor said that the film’s producers had recently met with city officials to discuss filming. The Romania Business Insider (via SuperHeroHype) reports that filming may take place in Bucharest’s historical center, Edgar Quintet Street or the Palace of Parliament. The report also says that Nolan visited the Turda salt mines in Romania last month, though the visit was “unofficial.” So what does all of this mean? Speculate away, Bat-fans! The Dark Knight Rises is due out July 20, 2012.

Russell Brand Circling ROCK OF AGES With Tom Cruise

The ever-growing list of stars that are “circling” or “in talks” to appear in director Adam Shankman’s (Hairspray) adaptation of the stage musical Rock of Ages has just added one more name. Russell Brand is apparently looking at starring in the film as Lonnie, who runs the 80’s rock club The Bourbon. Alec Baldwin is said to be looking at the role of the owner of that club, who sings a rousing rendition of “I Can’t Fight This Feeling” by REO Speedwagon with Brand’s character.

The musical takes place in 1987 and tells the story of “a small town girl met a big city rocker and in LA’s most famous rock club, they fell in love to the greatest songs of the 80s.” We recently told you that Gwyneth Paltrow was offered a role in the film. Deadline reports that Tom Cruise will close a deal to headline the film as aging rocker Stacee Jax shortly. Mary J. Blige is also in talks to join the cast. The script for the film was originally written by the musical’s book writer Chris D’Arienzo, but has since seen a revision by Toy Story 3 scribe Michael Arndt. Production is looking towards a May start date.

CONFIRMED: Michael Shannon, Benicio del Toro and James Franco Set for THE ICEMAN

Back in September, we reported that a trio of actors were reportedly looking at starring in The Iceman, the true story of mob contract-killer Richard Kuklinski.  Today, we’ve got confirmation that Michael Shannon, Benicio del Toro and James Franco have officially joined the cast. Shannon has been cast in the lead role of Kuklinski, with del Toro set to play Kuklinski’s employer, mobster Roy Demeo, and Franco tapped as Kuklinski’s mentor assassin. Directed by Ariel Vromen (Danika), the film is based on the book The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer by Anthony Bruno, as well as interview footage. Regarding the casting, Vromen said:

“I am honored to work with such a talented cast on such a compelling story. Since the early stages of development I had the dream of casting Michael Shannon as Kuklinski, as I believe there’s no one else that can play this part better than him.”

Sundance 2011: First Images from TAKE SHELTER Starring Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain

As part of our ongoing coverage for the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, we have the first images from Jeff Nichols’ Take Shelter.  Here’s the one-line synopsis: A working-class husband and father questions whether his terrifying dreams of an apocalyptic storm signal something real to come or the onset of an inherited mental illness he’s feared his whole life. The film stars Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire), Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life), Shea Whigham (Boardwalk Empire), Katy Mixon (Eastbound & Down), and Kathy Baker (Edward Scissorhands).

New Posters for THE OTHER WOMAN, RABBIT HOLE, and THE KING’S SPEECH

New posters have gone online for The Other Woman, Rabbit Hole, and The King’s Speech.  Starring Natalie Portman, The Other Woman sees the actress make a turn as a newlywed lawyer who must deal with the loss of a newborn daughter.  The drama is based on the Ayelet Waldman novel Love and Other Impossible Pursuits and the poster on display here is solid enough while featuring a pastel colored Portman set against a hand drawn city backdrop.  As for Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart’s Rabbit Hole, while it’s not too hard on the eyes, I have to say that it pales in comparison to previous marketing efforts from the film (a top 10 studio poster of the year, if you ask Matt).

Finally, in regards to the latest offering from Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush’s The King’s Speech, my first reaction says that it lies somewhere in between the abomination that was this poster and the solid minimalistic approach found here.  To check out all three posters for yourself, hit the jump.  Rabbit Hole and The King’s Speech are currently enjoying limited theatrical releases whereas The Other Woman will premiere on demand on New Year’s Day prior to hitting theaters on February 4th.

Here’s the synopsis for The Other Woman [from IFC Films]:

The radiant Natalie Portman (CLOSER, BLACK SWAN) lights up the screen in this frank, funny, and heart-wrenching adaptation of bestselling author Ayelet Waldman’s novel about life, loss, and family directed by Don Roos (THE OPPOSITE OF SEX, HAPPY ENDINGS).

Emilia (Portman) is a Harvard law school graduate and a newlywed, having just married Jack (Scott Cohen, THE UNDERSTUDY), a high-powered New York lawyer, who was her boss – and married – when she began working at his law firm. Unfortunately, her life takes an unexpected turn when Jack and Emilia lose their newborn daughter. Emilia struggles through her grief to connect with her new stepson William (Charlie Tahan, I AM LEGEND), but is finding it hard to connect with this precocious child. Perhaps the most difficult obstacle of all for Emilia is trying to cope with the constant interferences of her husband’s angry, jealous ex-wife, Carolyn (Lisa Kudrow).

RABBIT HOLE is a vivid, hopeful, honest and unexpectedly witty portrait of a family searching for what remains possible in the most impossible of all situations. Becca and Howie Corbett (NICOLE KIDMAN and AARON ECKHART) are returning to their everyday existence in the wake of a shocking, sudden loss. Just eight months ago, they were a happy suburban family with everything they wanted. Now, they are caught in a maze of memory, longing, guilt, recrimination, sarcasm and tightly controlled rage from which they cannot escape. While Becca finds pain in the familiar, Howie finds comfort. The shifts come in abrupt, unforeseen moments. After the death of his father King George V (Michael Gambon) and the scandalous abdication of Prince Edward VII’s (Guy Pearce), Bertie (Colin Firth) who has suffered from a debilitating speech impediment all his life, is suddenly crowned King George VI of England. With his country on the brink of war and in desperate need of a leader, his wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), the future Queen Mother, arranges for her husband to see an eccentric speech therapist, Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush).  After a rough start, the two delve into an unorthodox course of treatment and eventually form an unbreakable bond. With the support of Logue, his family, his government and Winston Churchill (Timothy Spall), the King will overcome his stammer and deliver a radio-address that inspires his people and unites them in battle.  Based on the true story of King George VI, THE KING’S SPEECH follows the Royal Monarch’s quest to find his voice.
