R.I.P. Elizabeth Taylor (1932 – 2011)

Actress Elizabeth Taylor has passed away at the age of 79. ABC News has confirmed that Taylor died of congestive heart failure this morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Taylor’s career in Hollywood spanned five decades. She was nominated for five Oscars and she took home the award for Best Actress for her riveting performances in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and BUtterfield 8. While she retired from acting in 2001, she was one of Hollywood’s greatest legends and one of the most in-demand stars of the 1950s and 60s. In 1985, she devoted herself to fund-raising and activism against AIDS and the family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. Our deepest condolences go out to Ms. Taylor’s friends and family. Hit the jump for a statement from her son Michael Wilding.

Taylor’s son Michael Wilding released an official statement:
“My Mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love.  Though her loss is devastating to those of us who held her so close and so dear, we will always be inspired by her enduring contribution to our world. Her remarkable body of work in film, her ongoing success as a businesswoman, and her brave and relentless advocacy in the fight against HIV/AIDS, all make us all incredibly proud of what she accomplished. We know, quite simply, that the world is a better place for Mom having lived in it. Her legacy will never fade, her spirit will always be with us, and her love will live forever in our hearts.”

Will Sasso Joins THE THREE STOOGES Casting Race
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 23rd, 2011
Add Will Sasso ($#*! My Dad Says) to the list of potential actors who may be leading the Farrelly Brothers’ The Three Stooges. THR reports that Sasso is a “likely frontrunner to play Moe, Larry or Curly”. While I don’t doubt that Sasso has the comic range to play any of the Stooges, I think we can all agree that he would probably play Curly if he was cast in the film.

I’ve been a fan of Sasso’s ever since I saw him on MADtv back in the 90s and I’d be happy to see him land such a major role. After the jump, you can check out Sasso in one of my favorite MADtv sketches, “Paul Timberman’s Workshop”.

Bill Nighy and Danny Huston Join CLASH OF THE TITANS Sequel; Full Synopsis Revealed
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 23rd, 2011
Production has begun on Jonathan Liebesman’s untitled sequel to Clash of the Titans. Warner Bros. has sent out a press release confirming the film’s cast. Returning actors Sam Worthington (Perseus), Liam Neeson (Zeus), Ralph Fiennes (Hades), and Danny Huston (seen in the first film for half-a-second as Poseidon), will be joined by Edgar Ramirez (Ares), Toby Kebbell (Argenor, Posiedon’s demigod son), Rosamund Pike (Andromeda), and Bill Nighy (Hephaestus). It’s worth noting that Gemma Arterton, who was rumored to return as Io, isn’t mentioned in the press release.

Warner Bros. has also sent out a full synopsis for the sequel. The story takes place 10 years after the first film with Perseus attempting to lead a quiet life. But he’s called back into action in order to rescue Zeus after the god is captured by Ares and Hades in a deal to unleash the titans. The plot clearly has a major role set up for Kronos, the leader of the titans, but no actor has been linked to the role at this point.

Hit the jump for the full press release and synopsis. Clash of the Titans 2 is set to be released in post-converted 3D (ugh) on March 30, 2012.

Trailer for Yet another Terrible-Looking 50 Cent Movie, SETUP, Co-Starring Bruce Willis
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 23rd, 2011
A couple weeks ago, we showed you the hilariously-awful trailer for Things Fall Apart starring Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. While some rappers have shown they can excel at music and acting, 50 Cent is not one of those rappers. Any on-stage charisma he has vanishes when he’s on camera, and his gigantic teeth seem to get in the way of him intelligibly delivering dialogue.

But if you saw the trailer for Things Fall Apart and were left thinking, “Man, I wish there was more where that came from,” then you’re in luck. The trailer for future direct-to-DVD movie Setup has gone online and it will leave you wondering, “Seriously, Bruce Willis? You’re in this? Did you forget you’re an A-Lister?” I can understand when Val Kilmer co-stars with 50 Cent in Gun, but this just baffles me to pieces.

Hit the jump to see Willis making a toast to “crime” and informing a hapless thug that “God has left Detroit.”

Guillermo Del Toro Says "Hellboy 3" Isn't Happening
Posted: March 12th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Movieweb recently caught up with Guillermo Del Toro, who spoke about "Frankenstein," "At the Mountains of Madness," "Pacific Rim" and the third "Hellboy" movie.

While he respects Universal Pictures' decision not to fund "At the Mountains of Madness," he said that the plan is to one day develop the film. "A hundred percent I'll try," the director explained. "With a little bit of luck we will find good terms to get it back from Universal."

"Pacific Rim," which is Del Toro's next helming gig, has been in pre-production for six months. "I was developing the visual bible for that," he said. "We hope to start shooting this September."

Regarding "Frankenstein," Del Toro has a meeting with Universal set for next week. Unfortunately, there are no meeting coming up about "Hellboy 3," because according to Del Toro: "There are no plans at all [for 'Hellboy 3']."

Marisa Tomei And Sarah Jessica Parker Circling Married And Cheating
published: 2011-03-12 15:52:17 Author: Mack Rawden
If I told you a sports movie was coming out and gave you no other information, what would you guess might be the vague construction of its plot? New coach comes aboard to impart winning attitude on hapless team. What about a horror movie? Psychopath terrorizes group of friends, mowing them down one by one. What about an independent film? That one’s a little harder, but I bet if I gave you three guesses one of them would involve philandering spouses. These story arcs might seem repetitive, to a degree they certainly are, but they exist because they’re proven winners. In the end, it doesn’t matter if the territory has been covered before, as long as the film has something new to say about it. Let’s hope that’s the case with Raymond de Felitta’s newest.

According to Variety, it’s aptly titled Married And Cheating, and it follows three couples as they navigate the ups and downs of their lives and deal with the ramifications of their decisions. The always reliable Marisa Tomei is negotiating to star alongside Sarah Jessica Parker, provided the financing comes together. These deals are always a bit dicey as you can’t sign anyone until the money’s done, but you can’t get money until people are signed. As a result, most of the time people verbally commit, checks are signed and then it all gets formalized.

I can’t help but be reminded of the underseen Your Friends And Neighbors. The Ben Stiller relationships indie never really caught on with viewers, but if Married And Cheating proves to be half as brilliant, we’ll all be in for something special.

Danny Huston Joins Nic Cage As He Tries To Find His Daughter In Medallion
published: 2011-03-12 10:55:56 Author: Mack Rawden
What do coaches tell professional athletes in the middle of a cold streak? Think about the fundamentals, get back to basics, we still have confidence in you. The same message should ring true for actors with a few flops in a row. Trying new things is great, but in times of trouble, it's always best to steer your way out using what's worked before, and for Nicolas Cage that's a big budget action film that's approximately forty percent too ridiculous to actually happen. Drive Angry 3D and that Witch one went a little too far, but this new scaled-back project Medallionshould do the trick, especially now that Danny Huston is on board.

If you, like most people, didn't see last year's Warrior's Way, you missed out on a truly epic villain performance from Huston. Murdering, raping and slaying ninjas, he was a true original, and with any luck director Simon West will let him go for it in Medallion too. According to IndieWire, the actor has officially boarded the thriller, which will see West reteam with his Con Air star Nic Cage. The plot follows a criminal (Cage) as he enlists his partner (Malin Akerman) to find his kidnapped daughter hidden somewhere in the trunk of a taxi cab. Asses will be kicked, heads will roll and hopefully, people will shell out to see it.

Medallion is about to start shooting in New Orleans. There's no official release date, but if it ends up being as good as it could be, next summer is probably a good guess.

Over 70 Photos From The Tree of Life
Source: Kinopoisk.ru March 13, 2011

Some interesting news items have come online (and disappeared) about Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life recently. From visual effects supervisor Dan Glass saying a bit too much about certain creatures appearing in the film (hence the pulled articles), to the running time being revealed as 2 hours and 18 minutes.

Now comes a rather large gallery of photos from the film at Kinopoisk.ru (via TheFilmStage.com). The pictures feature mostly Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain. You can check them out by clicking here or on the photo below!
Opening in limited theaters on May 27, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.

Streisand's Gypsy is a No-Go
Source: The Hartford Courant , Edward Douglas March 12, 2011

Back in January, there was a report in the New York Times that Barbara Streisand had met with Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents, co-writers of the 1959 Broadway musical Gypsy, to talk to them about playing Mama Rose in a movie version of the musical.

Well, it looks like that movie may not happen now according to Laurents, who spoke to the Hartford Courant's Frank Rizzo about how the project came together and how it now seems to not be happening anymore.

According to Laurents, it's Sondheim himself who questioned the reasons for making a movie based on their musical. Laurents told Rizzo the following story about talking with his partner who got cold feet:

"He said, 'What is the point of it?' And I said, 'They have this terrible version with Rosalind Russell wearing those black and white shoes.' And then Sondheim told me something that he got from the British -- and it's wonderful. He said, 'You want a record because the theater is ephemeral. But that's wrong. The theater's greatest essence is that it is ephemeral. You don't need a record. The fact that it's ephemeral means you can have different productions, different Roses on into infinity.'

"So I don't want it now. I don't want a definitive record. I want it to stay alive."

Laurents goes on to say that Streisand is disappointed with Sondheim's decision, especially because Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) was interested in directing the movie.

Streisand is staying busy following her appearance in Little Fockers by co-starring in the Seth Rogen comedy My Mother's Curse for Paramount with Anne (The Proposal) Fletcher directing.

New Set Photos from Steven Soderbergh’s HAYWIRE Starring Gina Carano and Ewan McGregor
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 11th, 2011 at 11:44 am

If you want to see Gina Carano fake-beating the snot out of Ewan McGregor, then today’s your lucky day. Set photos from Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming thriller Haywire have leaked on line and show the wetsuit-clad MMA fighter throwing some fake punches against the British actor. I’m not sure about the context of the scene, but the plot centers on a covert agent (Carano) who is double-crossed on a mission and returns home to protect her family and get revenge. While the premise sounds bland, I don’t expect Soderbergh to deliver a typical spy-thriller.

Hit the jump to check out the set photos. Haywire also stars Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, and Bill Paxton. The film was rumored to be released in April, but obviously since we’ve seen no official marketing, we probably won’t see the film until late summer at the earliest.

Mark Ruffalo Set to Play Jazz Pianist Joe Albany in Indie Drama LOW DOWN
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 11th, 2011 at 5:54 pm

Following his Oscar nominated stint in The Kids Are All Right, Mark Ruffalo has signed on to portray legendary jazz pianist Joe Albany in the indie drama Low Down. Epoch Films partner Jeff Preiss is set to make his feature film debut on the project which will tell the story of Albany’s life from the perspective of his 11-year-old daughter. While in the 40’s and 50’s Alabany was playing with the likes of Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, he struggled with a heroin addiction throughout the later years of his life.

Variety reports that the film will focus mainly on Albany’s life during the 60’s and 70’s, with his daughter watching her “charismatic but strung-out father interact with other eccentric characters in cocktail bars and transient hotels.” Topper Lilien and Amy Albany wrote the script, based on Alabany’s memoir focusing on her father. Ruffalo will also serve as an executive producer on the project. The actor is currently prepping for his turn as Bruce Banner/the Hulk in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers.

Danny Huston Joins the Cast of MEDALLION Starring Nicolas Cage and Malin Akerman
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 11th, 2011 at 4:02 pm

Actor Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) has joined the cast of director Simon West’s (When a Stranger Calls) upcoming action-thriller Medallion. The Playlist reports that Huston will join Nicolas Cage in the flick, which centers on a former master thief (Cage) who has only a few hours to find his daughter when she is kidnapped and locked in the trunk of a New York medallion taxi cab. Malin Akerman will portray an ex-girlfriend of Cage’s who teams up with him to find his daughter. The Taken-esque flick has a script from David Guggenheim (Safe House) and marks the re-teaming of Cage and West after their previous collaboration on Con Air.

Duncan Jones Plans to Turn MUTE into a Graphic Novel
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 11th, 2011 at 11:04 am

When we last reported on Duncan Jones’ Mute, the project was in limbo. The script is reportedly takes cues from Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and centers on a mute bartender in 2046 Berlin who must go against the city’s gangsters in order to find his girlfriend. Unfortunately, that doesn’t translate well to a collector’s cup so the project is having trouble finding funding. Jones, whose new film Source Code opens April 1st, says that he’s going to adapt the story in to a graphic novel and hope that makes the property more attractive to investors. Speaking to Gordon and the Whale, Jones explains:

Although, I can sort of tell you that I’ve been talking to my producer today and we have decided that we’re going to release MUTE as a graphic novel. Because we’ve had so many problems trying to get this film made, you know? The people who are involved with financing films have just been…shy…shy of making the script. So what we decided to do is we’re going to make a graphic novel of it, prove it…prove it to an audience that this works and maybe in the future get the chance to come back and make it.

In the meantime, Jones is working on an untitled project that he hopes will fulfill his need to make a Blade Runner-like “city-based, futuristic sci-fi film.”

Director Gary Ross Talks THE HUNGER GAMES

by Tommy Cook    Posted: December 17th, 2010

Last month, director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) was announced as the director to Suzanne Collins’ acclaimed novel The Hunger Games.  Ross recently sat down with EW to talk about his approach to the adaptation. Ross played rather coy about the project in the interview but did offer up some choice words in regards to the heroine of the novel Katniss:
“What makes Katniss attractive is her strength and her assuredness and her defiance and ultimately her compassion. And I don’t mean just physical strength. I mean a real strength as a human being. She knows her own truth. She feels deeply and fiercely. And this is something that the actress has to bring with her.”
The Hunger Games is part one of a trilogy focusing on an eighteen-year-old girl, who in a dystopian future must fight to the death against various other teenagers (a la Battle Royale). In the wake of Twilight, The Hunger Games has seemingly become the new “it” young adult novel. I must admit that in an effort to remain current – I too have begun to read the novel. I’m only fifty or so pages in the book; but it does show some actual literary value – something of which I couldn’t say about Stephanie Myer’s opus. For more on The Hunger Games, including some quotes from Ross in regards to casting the film as well as an official book synopsis, hit the jump.
With regards to casting, Ross remained cryptic about whether he would be casting an unknown or an established actress in the lead role of Katniss:
“We’ll cast the right person for the part. Lionsgate has been great in the respect that they don’t feel that this needs a movie star in Katniss’ role. The greatest thing about the franchise and the books being the star is that we can cast whomever we want. So we all feel like we’re just going to cast the right person.”
This to me feels like code for semi famous actress whose face you know but whose name you don’t (see Alex Pettyfer in I Am Number Four for proof of this phenomenon). Somewhere in between Amanda Seyfried and Second Girl on the left in [insert title] Michael Bay film. If I were to throw out names, how about Haley Bennett (from Joe Dante’s still unreleased The Hole) or Juno Temple (Year One).
Ross also shot down rumors that Robert Downey Jr. or Hugh Laurie would be appearing in the film:
“No…It would be wrong I think to announce [them] before we’ve actually cast them or spoken to them.”
Anyways, Gary Ross is a fine filmmaker – yes, Seabiscuit is a bit schmaltzy but Pleasantville is more than enjoyable. It should be interesting to watch the filmmaker of such “heartwarming” films, try his hand at the darker and more disturbing undertones of the novel.
Book Synopsis of The Hunger Games from The School Library Journal via Amazon:
In a not-too-distant future, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss’ young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district’s female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems to have all the fighting skills of a lump of bread dough, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives.

New Posters for THE GREEN HORNET and DYLAN DOG: DEAD OF NIGHT

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 17th, 2010

New posters have gone online for The Green Hornet and Dylan Dog: Dead of Night.  The poster Green Hornet isn’t all that spectacular, but I’m hearing positive buzz on the film, which stars Seth Rogen and Jay Chou as guys who masquerade as heroes masquerading as villains.  They also wear masks.  As for Dylan Dog, it’s an Italian teaser poster with the letters “DD” on it instead of the full title.  However, due to the character’s popularity in Italy (the film is based on one of the best-selling Italian comic books), that shouldn’t be a problem.  If the film shows up in the U.S., the marketing is going to have to be a bit more explicit.
Hit the jump to check out both posters.  Directed by Michel Gondry (Be Kind Rewind), The Green Hornet also stars Christoph Waltz and Cameron Diaz.  The film opens in 3D on January 14, 2011.  Dylan Dog: Dead of Night was directed by Kevin Munroe (TMNT) and stars Brandon Routh and Sam Huntington.  It’s set to open in Italy in March.
Poster via IMP Awards:

Here’s the official synopsis for The Green Hornet:
Britt Reid (Seth Rogen), son and heir to Los Angeles’ largest newspaper fortune, is a rich, spoiled playboy who has been happy to maintain a direction-less existence. When his father James Reid (Tom Wilkinson) dies, Britt meets an impressive and resourceful company employee, Kato (Jay Chou). They realize that they have the resources to do something worthwhile with their lives and finally step out of James Reid’s shadow. Kato builds the ultimate weapon, The Black Beauty, an indestructible car with every weapon imaginable and Britt decides that in order to be heroes, they will pose as villains. With the help of Britt’s new secretary, Lenore Case (Cameron Diaz), they learn that the chief criminal in the city is named Benjamin Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz). He has united all the gangs under his power, and he quickly sees that the Green Hornet is a direct threat to the prosperous criminal underworld he controls.

We have a few bits of casting news for you this morning.  First up, Dennis Quaid has signed on to star in the indie thriller Beneath the Darkness.  Directed by Martin Guigui, Darkness is set in Texas (where it is currently shooting) and focuses on a teen who attempts to expose the deep, dark secrets of a house owned by Quaid’s character.  Speaking of which, per Variety, the actor is set to make a turn as a well-respected mortician (the best kind of mortician, in my opinion).  Quaid joins a cast that features Aimee Teegarden, Tony Oller, and Stephen Lunsford.
Next up, Sienna Miller and Danny Huston have agreed to take on Bernard Rose’s (Candyman) indie drama Two Jacks.  Based on the Tolstoy short story The Two Hussars, Jacks tells the story of an aging film director who returns to Hollywood to earn financing for his new project.  According to Variety, the director’s return is filled with “a series of wild adventures, in which he boozes, seduces a beautiful woman and fights with studio execs, winning the money he needs in a poker game.”  Given that the film spans two generations of one family, the project will also flash-forward twenty years later to focus on said director’s son (played by Jack Huston of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire) as he attempts to follow in his father’s directorial footsteps.  No details regarding Miller or Huston’s roles are available as of now.
