Ryan Gosling Won't Direct The Idolmaker Remake-- He's Just Too Busy

published: 2011-06-03 09:26:12 Author: Katey Rich
It wasn't even a month ago that we reported Ryan Gosling would make his directorial debut with The Idolmaker a remake of the 1980 film about a music producer who turns a saxophone player into a star. Gosling was plenty busy at the time, as we pointed out then, with commitments to projects ranging from the small-scale crime drama The Place Beyond The Pines to a remake of Logan's Run. Now Gosling has apparently gotten the memo that he's a little too busy for his own good, and according to Deadline let MGM know that he won't be able to direct The Idolmaker after all.

The change may have happened because Bradley Cooper has confirmed he'll join Gosling in Pines, meaning that project can go ahead and shoot this summer under Gosling's Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance. From there Gosling will star along with Sean Penn and Josh Brolin in the period crime drama Gangster Quad, and at some point he does have to run away from the futuristic authorities in the Logan's Run remake. MGM is going to keep developing Idolmaker and hope that Gosling might return to work on it, but given how wide-ranging the guy's interests are who knows when he might come back. With his Cannes hit Drive coming at some point this year, and also a turn in the rom-com Crazy Stupid Love this summer, Gosling keeps bolstering his reputation as one of the most interesting actors working today. He's just not going to add "director" to that description any time soon.

Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser And Craig Robinson Will Revive The 60s In Freaky Deaky

published: 2011-06-03 08:19:22 Author: Katey Rich
Elmore Leonard's clever crime novels have made for some terrific movies over the years, including the great 90s triumvirate of Get Shorty, Out of Sight and Jackie Brown. He's even the godfather of the current FX series Justified, having created the character Raylan Givens that Timothy Olyphant plays. The last Leonard novel to be adapted into a film was the virtually unseen 2009 film Killshot, but he's giving it a go again with an adaptation of Freaky Deaky , a crime story that just bulked up its cast.

According to Variety Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser and Craig Robinson will all join William H. Macy in the film, about two ex-hippies who concoct a plot to build some bombs and scare a Hollywood producer out of his cash. Fraser will be playing one of the hippies, who now works as a pyrotechnics expert, and Macy will play the mogul with the delicious name of Woody Ricks. Robinson will play a former Black Panther who works with the mogul, while Dillon, ever in hero mode, plays the square-jawed LAPD bomb squad officer who discovers the plot. The film is being direct, producer and adapted by Charles Matthau, founder of The Matthau Company and, indeed, son of Walter Matthau; his directing credits go all the way back to 1988's Doin' Time on Planet Earth.

They'll be changing a few details of Freaky Deaky such as shifting the time setting from the late 80s to 1974, a change Leonard himself approved of. Rights to the novel had at various point been in the hands of Quentin Tarantino and John Malkovich, and it's hard to know what to expect out of this one, though also hard to argue with this motley assortment of character actors who typically liven up every film they're in. Production starts this June in Michigan, once Matthau picks the woman he wants to play the female lead-- in the book, Fraser's character Skip Gibbs is working alongside female ex-con Robin Abbott.

Nicholas Hoult Covers 'BlackBook' June/July 2011

Nicholas Hoult Covers 'BlackBook' June/July 2011
Nicholas Hoult heats up the cover of BlackBook’s June/July “Outsiders” issue.
Here’s what the 21-year-old X-Men: First Class star had to share with the mag:
On being watched onscreen: “There are so many people watching you. I enjoy the acting part. But then I forget that people are actually going to watch it.”
On his sex scenes in Skins: “We grabbed a couple glasses of vodka and some champagne at 8 in the morning, and we just went on and did it.”
On self doubt: “I still worry that I’m never going to get another job. Whenever a new film comes out, I always worry that it’s going to be the one people look at and go, ‘Don’t ever hire him again.’”
On working with Colin Firth in A Single Man: “I was doing my American accent, and Colin was doing his usual English accent, but I was letting mine slip. I remember thinking, Uh oh, I’m in trouble. But Colin is very relaxed and free, which made my job easy. There’s a fantastic subtlety to his acting, like you can read every thought and emotion that passes through his mind.”

Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser and Craig Robinson Set for FREAKY DEAKY

A trio of actors have signed on for Charles Matthau’s (The Grass Harp) adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel Freaky Deaky. Variety reports that Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser and Craig Robinson will star in the Hollywood-centered crime flick. Dillon will star as an LAPD bomb squad officer who happens upon a plot hatched by two hippies who plan to scam a movie mogul using their bomb-making skills. Fraser plays a former activist who now puts his bomb-knowledge to work as a Hollywood pyrotechnics and demolition expert, and Robinson is poised to play a former Black Panther who now serves as the assistant to Fraser’s character.
In pitch-perfect casting, William H. Macy is already set to star as the alcoholic Hollywood mogul that the two hippie characters attempt to scam. The other day we heard that Sienna Miller may be starring in the film, but she wasn’t mentioned in Variety’s report today. Matthau will direct, and adapted Leonard’s novel himself. The film version will take place in 1974 instead of Leonard’s late 80’s setting of the book. While Fraser is used to starring in what can mildly be described as horseshit as of late, the other actors involved sound promising. It’ll be interesting to see who Matthau gets to fill out the rest of his cast. Production is set to start this summer in Michigan. Don Scardino to Direct BURT WONDERSTONE Starring Steve Carell

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 2nd, 2011

In magician-comedy movie news, New Line has tapped Don Scardino to make his feature directorial debut on Burt Wonderstone. Starring Steve Carell, the film revolves around a magician in Las Vegas who, after losing his partner, must compete with a new, hipper magician who appears on the strip and starts making waves. Back in February, we reported that TV director Charles McDougall had been set to direct the film, but now Deadline reports that he’s been replaced by Scardino.
A fellow television director, Scardino currently serves as one of the principal directors on NBC’s 30 Rock. He’ll be working from a script by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Horrible Bosses), who wrote the most recent draft after Chad Kultgen’s first pass at the screenplay. Production is set to begin this October in Los Angeles. http://collider.com/don-scardino-burt-wonderstone/94384/

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Theatrical Trailer

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 2nd, 2011

The theatrical trailer for director Rupert Wyatt’s (The EscapistRise of the Planet of the Apes is now available online. While I continue to be impressed with the digital effects work done by Peter Jackson’s WETA Digital, I’m unsure what to make of dialogue such as “That chimp’s company property!” Moreover, even though I’m a fan of Frank Schaffner’s 1968 original (co-written by Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling), I’m still not convinced that this is a property I need to learn more backstory about (which, I assume, is Rise‘s sole purpose in the franchise). Starring James Franco, Andy Serkis, Tom Felton, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, and Freida Pinto, Rise of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on August 5th.

Craig Brewer to Adapt TARZAN for a Potential Trilogy

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 2nd, 2011

Filmmaker Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) will direct a new Tarzan film as part of a potential trilogy for Warner Bros.  At the beginning of the year, we told you that Warner Bros. was rebooting or remaking some of its high-profile properties and Tarzan was on that list.  And they have a solid director in Brewer although I’d much rather see him make Mother Trucker (which is about a man who escapes from prison, hijacks an 18-wheeler, and races across the South to see his dying mother) as his follow up to the upcoming remake of Footloose.
Warner Bros. also has screenwriter Adam Cozad (Archangel) working on a separate script for Tarzan, but it remains to be seen which film they’ll move into production.  Deadline reports that this is a passion project for Brewer, and I’ll be interested to see how he plans to interpret a character who has been adapted into countless formats since he was first introduced in Edgar Rice Burrough’s 1914 novel Tarzan of hte Apes.

Craig Brewer Wants To Reboot Tarzan As A Trilogy At Warner Bros.

published: 2011-06-02 13:50:44 Author: Sean O'Connell
Tarzan has been on Hollywood’s backburner for years now. The fictional hero of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ timeless novels has starred in roughly 90 movies since 1918, and was most famously portrayed by Johnny Weissmuller in the 1930s and ’40s. But a new version of the ape-man may swing into theaters as part of an updated adventure that would stretch over three films.

The pitch comes from writer-director Craig Brewer, who according to Deadline is working with Warner Bros. on a rejuvenated Tarzan story that the studio plans to turn into a trilogy. Screenwriter Adam Cozad has been hired to pen the script. His other credits include the planned Jack Ryan reboot and Archangel, which has attracted Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski. No details on how Tarzan would be differently, exactly. There’s only so much you can do with the basic premise of an orphan raised by apes, so I’m intrigued to see how massive this story is that Brewer thinks he can expand it over three films.

On a related note, what happened to Brewer? The guy previously directed the passionate Hustle & Flow and the provocative Black Snake Moan. Since then, he has moved on to a Footloose remake and now a Tarzan reboot. Maybe it was Brewer’s intention all along to go mainstream, but the filmmaking voice and attitude I heard in those first two films didn’t suggest a guy content to coast on safer projects such as these.

Paul Greengrass to Direct Tom Hanks in Somali Pirate Hostage Film

Posted: June 3rd, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Paul Greengrass (Bourne Ultimatum) has been developing a Martin Luther King Jr film called "Memphis" until Universal Pictures shut it down over rights issues. Now the director has a new project, "A Captain's Duty."

The new movie is a big screen adaptation of Richard Phillips' "A Captain's Duty," about the merchant-vessel captain who was taken hostage by Somali pirates and ultimately freed in a daring rescue by US Navy SEALs. Tom Hanks is on board to play the lead role.

The new film is written by Billy Ray (State of Play, Flightplan) and will likely go into production this fall, once Hanks wraps "Cloud Atlas" for the Wachowskis.

**Drew Barrymore To Direct Omnibus Romantic Comedy How To Be Single **Christina Hendricks To Play Brendan Fraser's Wife In Seconds of Pleasure **Josh Hutcherson Wants Role in 'The 'Hunger Games'

Drew Barrymore To Direct Omnibus Romantic Comedy How To Be Single
published: 2011-03-15 22:00:21 Author: Eric Eisenberg
In 2009, after years f making sub-par romantic comedies, Drew Barrymore surprised a lot of people when she jumped behind the camera and directed Whip It, a solid coming of age story set in the world of roller derby. Sadly her sophomore efforts sounds as though it will be a step back.

Described as being in the vein of He's Just Not That Into You and Valentines Day (uh oh), How To Be Single will be an omnibus comedy that examines the relationships and breakups of a group of New Yorkers over the span of 10 years. According to THR, The film will be based on the novel by Liz Tuccillo and is being adapted by Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn, both of whom worked on the two aforementioned films. The article doesn't mention if Barrymore plans to star (though she is also producing).

Haven't we gotten enough mileage out of this dumb sub-genre yet? It was cute when Love, Actually did it, but these films all have the same archetypal characters and storylines; this one just has the dumb catch of spreading it out over 10 years. Whip It proved that Barrymore can be a competent director - it's a shame that she'll be wasting that potential.

Christina Hendricks To Play Brendan Fraser's Wife In Seconds of Pleasure published: 2011-03-15 17:22:02
Author: Eric Eisenberg

It's amazing what being a part of a massively successful television show can do for your career as an actor. For years Christina Hendricks' filmography was largely filled with guest spots on television shows from ER to Tru Calling. But with the incredible popularity of Mad Men and her ability to look jaw-droppingly beautiful in 1960s garb, she's getting her fair share of film parts. Starring in Tony Kaye's Detatchment and Nicholas Winding Refn's Drive later this year and recently signed on to I Don't Know How She Does It, Hendricks has done an excellent job of filling her schedule while her series is on hiatus, and now she's adding another.

Deadline is reporting that the actress has signed on for Seconds of Pleasure set to be directed by Mike Figgis and based on a script by Neil LaBute. An omnibus structure, the film is made up of a series of vignettes connecting the lives of passengers on a plane. Hendricks will play the wife of a character played by Brendan Fraser who catches him "in a compromising position." The rest of the cast is rounded out by Julia Stiles, Matt Dillon and Kristen Scott Thomas.

Considering my not-so-secret crush on Christina Hendricks, I will say that I'm happy to see her get more work, but not too thrilled that she's being paired up with Brendan Fraser. After all, that's the dude who's doing the fish heist movie.

Josh Hutcherson Wants Role in 'The 'Hunger Games'
.By Jacob Hall (Subscribe to Jacob Hall's posts)

You can file this one under "slow news day."

The long and short of it is that rising young star Josh Hutcherson (if you want to feel old today, know that he was born in 1992) has been taking meetings with filmmaker Gary Ross regarding a role in the upcoming film adaptation of the immensely popular young adult novel, 'The Hunger Games'. He's probably on a list with a dozen other names, but the fact that he's letting us all know that he's in the running (and that he very much wants the part) allows us to make this news.

The role in question is presumably that of Peeta, the teenage boy who accompanies Katniss (a role that will supposedly be filled by Academy Award nominee Jennifer Lawrence) to the Hunger Games, a gladiatorial battle to the death fought by the children of a post-apocalyptic America. From an outside perspective (um, certain writers here at Cinematical haven't read it yet), it sounds like 'The Running Man' meets '1984' but for, you know, kids.

The news comes from Entertainment Weekly, who spoke to Hutcherson at SXSW, where his latest film 'Detention' made its world premiere this week. You can watch the trailer after the jump.

Casting Call: Brendan Fraser to Lead WHOLE LOTTA SOLE; Michelle Rodriguez to Co-Star in THE HOME; Hayley Atwell Joins I, ANNA

We have some quick casting news for you this morning. First up, Brendan Fraser will star in the heist comedy Whole Lotta Sole for director Terry George (Hotel Rwanda). Variety reports that the story centers on a young man who robs a fish shop in order to pay off a gambling debt, but the heist goes sideways when it turns into a hostage situation. Fraser will play the shopkeeper who’s on the run from his gangster father-in-law. Fraser had a rough 2010 with Extraordinary Measures and Furry Vengeance so hopefully Whole Lotta Sole will work out for him. He’s also attached to star in the Neil LaBute drama Seconds of Pleasure with Kristen Scott Thomas.

Hit the jump for casting news regarding Michelle Rodriguez and Hayley Atwell.
Michelle Rodriguez has been doing press for Battle: Los Angeles (click here for our exclusive interview with her) and she told The Playlist that she’ll be co-starring in the horror flick The Home. Written by Eric Vespe (aka AICN’s “Quint”), the film is about “a firefighter who is nearly killed during a failed rescue that leaves him physically and emotionally scarred. To recuperate, he is taken to a secluded nursing home where the elderly residents appear to be suffering from delusions. But after witnessing a violent attack, he soon realizes that the screams behind the walls are caused by more than hallucinations, and the residents are being preyed upon by twisted, monstrous nightmares that lurk within the home itself.” Rodriguez tells The Playlist that production is currently being set up and that she plans to shoot the film over the summer.

Finally, Hayley Atwell (The Duchess) has joined the cast of writer-director Barnaby Southcombe’s debut feature I, Anna. Atwell will reunite with her Duchess co-star Charlotte Rampling in the “London-set suspense thriller” that “charts the story of a woman’s life being turned upside down after a date gone wrong, and the impossible love of the policeman tracking her down.” THR reports that Atwell will play Emmy, the daughter of Rampling’s eponymous character. The film will also star Eddie Marsan, Jodhi May, Bill Milner, and Honor Blackman.

Summit has put the first five minutes of Duncan Jones’ Source Code online for your viewing pleasure. I would advise you to not watch it. Jones does such a great job of building momentum and helping launch you into the movie that while you’ll definitely want to see what happens next, that impulse will be diminished when you end up seeing the film since you’ll know what to expect. Source Code is inventive, thoughtful, and thrilling and it’s best if you just go in cold.

However, if you must see parts of this movie now, then you can check out the first five minutes of the film plus four clips. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Vera Farmiga, Michelle Monaghan, and Jeffrey Wright. Source Code opens April 1st.

Tarsem Singh’s IMMORTALS Set for November 11th

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 11th, 2011

Immortals, the new film from The Fall director Tarsem Singh, has set its release date as the easy-to-remember November 11th (11/11/11).  The Greek mythology action flick stars Henry Cavill as Theseus, who, with the help of the gods, must lead his men in battle against the Titans.  The film also stars Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), Kellan Lutz (Twilight), Isabel Lucas (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen), Stephen Dorff, John Hurt, and Mickey Rourke.
Immortals, which is being released in 3D, will share the weekend with the Adam Sandler comedy Jack and Jill. [Variety]

Brendan Fraser and Kristen Scott Thomas to Star in Neil LaBute’s SECONDS OF PLEASURE; Colin Firth and Ed Harris May Co-Star

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 11th, 2011

When he’s not starring in terrible family films, Brendan Fraser likes to spice things up with forgettable dramas.  Now that he’s not directing hyper-misogynistic movies, director Neil LaBute is content with disposable crap like Lakeview Terrace and the unnecessary remake of Death at a Funeral.  Now the two are teaming up for Seconds of Pleasure, a drama most likely based on LaBute’s book of the same name, which is a collection of short stories.  Deadline reports that Kristen Scott Thomas is also attached and that offers are out to Colin Firth and Ed Harris.  Hopefully, with Seconds of Pleasure, Fraser and LaBute will both get back on track.
Hit the jump for the synopsis of Seconds of Pleasure.
Here’s the synopsis for Neil LaBute’s Seconds of Pleasure [via Amazon]:
Neil LaBute is best known for his controversial films In the Company of Men and Your Friends and Neighbors, and his plays The Mercy Seat and The Shape of Things—which he also adapted for the screen. His short fiction has appeared in The New Yorker and Harper’s Bazaar, among others. Now, in his debut collection of stories, he brings to the page his cutting humor and compelling take on the shadowy terrain of the human heart. Seductive and disturbing, the stories in Seconds of Pleasure are not for the faint of heart. Each potent and pithy tale finds men and women exploiting—or at the mercy of—the hidden fault lines that separate them: a woman leaves her family at their vacation home after discovering her husband in a compromising situation in “Time Share”; a middle-aged man obsesses over a scab on the calf of a pretty young girl in “Boo-Boo”; and a vain Hollywood actor gets his comeuppance in “Soft Target.” Infused with LaBute’s trademark wit and black humor, Seconds of Pleasure unleashes his imagination in stories that offer unflinching insight into our very human shortcomings and impure urges with shocking candor.
