Johnny Depp's "Dark Shadows" Plot Revealed

Posted: May 18th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Warner Bros has unveiled a details plot synopsis for "Dark Shadows," which is directed by Tim Burton and stars Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, and Chloe Moretz. Production started this week.

Plot: In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Depp) has the world at his feet - or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy... until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis (Haley), and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters (Bella Heathcote).

Jason Reitman's "Young Adult" Plot Revealed

Posted: May 18th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Paramount Pictures has unveiled the official plot synopsis for Jason Reitman's (Up in the Air, Juno) upcoming "Young Adult" film, which stars Charlie Zeron, Patrick Wilson and Patton Oswalt. The script is once again written by Diablo Cody.

Plot: Theron plays Mavis Gary, a writer of teen literature who returns to her small hometown to relive her glory days and attempt to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart (Wilson). When returning home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate (Oswalt) who hasn’t quite gotten over high school, either.

Reitman has already wrapped filming and will likely premiere the movie at the Toronto Film Festival in September, just like he has done with all his other films.

Keanu Reeves Turns Down "Akira" Film

Posted: May 18th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Keanu Reeves was in talks to play Kaneda, the gang leader in the upcoming live-action "Akira" film. Warner Bros was hoping that having Reeves on board would better its chances of getting another A-lister to take the role of Tetsuo, the best friend.

JoBlo has now learned that Reeves has officially turned down the role, which will likely make many fans very happy. Warners quickly released a statement addressing allegations that the project, which has a budget of roughly $140 million and has Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli) attached to direct, may be in trouble.

"Production on 'Akira' has not halted or been shut down, as the film has not yet been greenlit and is still very much in the development stage," said the studio. "The exploratory process is crucial to a project of this magnitude, and we will continue to sculpt our approach to making the best possible film."

"The Crow" Remake to Begin Filming in January

Posted: May 18th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

We just reported producer Ed Pressman is at the Cannes Film Festival with news that he'll be remaking Jean Claude Van-Damme's "Bloodsport" film with director Phillip Noyce (Salt) at the helm.

Pressman also revealed that "The Crow" remake is moving forward and will begin filming in January. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) is on board to direct and Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) is still attached to star. It turns out that the lawsuit between Relativity Media and The Weinstein Company is no longer an issue.

In the film, Cooper will play a rock musician who is murdered while trying to save his fiancee from thugs. He is resurrected by supernatural forces and seeks revenge. The role was originally played by Brandon Lee, who was killed by a freak accident during production in 1993.

When Jennifer Lawrence was cast as protagonist Katniss Everdeen in Gary Ross’ adaptation of The Hunger Games, there were seriously people who complained that Lawrence was a blonde while in the book Katniss is a brunette.  These poor souls never heard of a hair dye so they’ll be pleased to know that this magical new invention has been used to turn Lawrence’s hair the proper color.  The new issue of Entertainment Weekly features Lawrence in her full Katniss get-up complete with bow, arrow, and golden pin that’s featured on the cover of the book.  Speaking of the book, I just downloaded it to my Kindle and plan to read it in the very near future.  If I don’t like it, I’m blaming all of the fans.
Hit the jump to check out the full image of Lawrence as Katniss.  The film also stars Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Wes Bentley, and Woody Harrelson.  The Hunger Games opens March 23, 2012.

Full Synopsis Revealed for Tim Burton’s DARK SHADOWS: Jonny Lee Miller Joins Cast

Warner Bros. has announced that principal photography has begun on Tim Burton’s adaptation of the cult classic TV series  Dark Shadows.  While I’ve always found announcements about the start of production to be slightly baffling (Movie studio is making movies!  Will wonders never cease?!), they sometimes contain useful information.  In the case of this Dark Shadows announcement, there are two newsworthy items.  First up, Jonny Lee Miller (Dexter) has joined the cast which features Johnny Depp (of course), Helena Bonham Carter (again, of course), Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe Moretz, Gulliver McGrath, Bella Heathcote, and Jackie Earle Haley.
Secondly, Warner Bros. has also released the full synopsis which not only provides plot details (but nothing spoilery) but also details the relationship between all of the characters.  Hit the jump to check out the press release, which includes the synopsis.  Dark Shadows is set to open May 11, 2012.

Maggie Gyllenhaal to Star in VOICE FROM THE STONE; 50 Cent Joins ODD THOMAS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 18th, 2011 at 11:05 am

As Cannes roles on, more deals are being made, and that means there’s new casting new announce.  First up, Variety reports that Maggie Gyllenhaal will star in the supernatural thriller Voice from the Stone.  Directed by Eric Howell and based off the Italian novel, Le Voce Della Pietra, the story has Gyllenhaal playing “a nurse drawn to the aid of a young boy who is haunted by malevolent forces within the walls of an old house in the Italian countryside. As she develops a relationship with the father of the boy, she also becomes haunted by the same evil presence and must fight to save herself and the boy.”  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Don’t help haunted children.  Gyllenhaal is currently filming the drama Still I Rise with Viola Davis and she’s attached to star in Hysteria opposite Hugh Dancy, and a biopic of musician Bill Monroe.

Universal Nabs Oliver Stone’s SAVAGES; Blake Lively and Teresa Palmer Join Olivia Wilde In Casting Consideration
by Jason Barr Posted: March 28th, 2011
After winning a bidding war with two other unnamed studios, Universal Pictures has landed domestic distribution rights to Oliver Stone’s adaptation of the Don Winslow novel Savages. Slated to begin shooting this June, Savages casting is still a bit of an open book as Aaron Johnson, Benicio del Toro, and Taylor Kitsch have all been offered roles in the film but are still in negotiations. Stone’s female lead is currently vacant as well with Jennifer Lawrence having to end talks after being cast in Gary Ross’ The Hunger Games.

According to Variety, both Blake Lively and Teresa Palmer have read for the part and join Olivia Wilde as potential candidates to make a turn as “O.” In Winslow’s novel, “O” is a “free-spirited friend” of Laguna Beach pot dealers, Ben and Chon. As the story goes, the dealers’ life of stoned luxury takes an unexpected turn when the Baja drug cartel kidnaps “O” in an attempt to coerce the pair to sell their product through them. For more on the project, hit the jump to check out a synopsis for Winslow’s novel.

**Hank Azaria And James Marsden The Frontrunners For Remaining Three Stooges Roles? **Michael Sheen Enters Talks For Tim Burton's Dark Shadows **Keira Knightley's 'Last Night' **'Three Musketeers' Trailer!

Hank Azaria And James Marsden The Frontrunners For Remaining Three Stooges Roles?
published: 2011-03-25 23:20:26 Author: Eric Eisenberg
With the project set to go into production in the middle of next month and one of the dust settled in regard to their first casting selection, we can probably assume that the rest of the actors to be in Peter and Bobby Farrelly's The Three Stooges will be announced fairly soon. Now we might have an idea of who they're looking at.

Deadline reports that the two names now surfacing to play Moe Howard and Larry Fine, respectively, are Hank Azaria and James Marsden. Should they be cast, they would join Will Sasso in the film, who just a couple hours ago was announced as Curly. Where the actors stand is highly speculative, however, as Deadline doesn't reveal a source for the information and at one point goes as far as to say "the name I am most often hearing..." Both Azaria and Marsden have roles in the Universal live-action/CGI-animated Easter movie Hop, which comes out next week.

While I find the Marsden rumor fairly strange (the same guy who played Cyclops in the X-Men movies?) I love the Azaria idea. The guy has always been hilarious and it isn't a stretch to see a physical resemblance - just throw a bowl cut on him.

Michael Sheen Enters Talks For Tim Burton's Dark Shadows
published: 2011-03-25 19:45:45 Author: Eric Eisenberg
If you haven't already been aware of it, Tim Burton has a habit of casting a lot of the same people in his movies. It's the reason Johnny Depp has been in seven of his movies and Helena Bonham Carter has been in six. Last year Michael Sheen took on the part of the White Rabbit (albeit voice only) in Burton's Alice in Wonderland, and now the director has him coming back for round two.

The Playlist has learned from unnamed sources that Sheen is now in talks to join the cast of Dark Shadows, Burton's film adaptation of the 1960s gothic soap opera. Should he sign on, he will be part of a project that already includes the aforementioned Depp and Bonham Carter, Jackie Earle Haley, Eva Green, Bella Heathcote, and Michelle Pfeiffer (who is working with Burton for the first time since Batman Returns). It's unknown what role he would be playing. The film is scheduled to begin shooting next month and will be released in 2012.

Sheen is really a joy to watch in anything, so you're not going to be hearing any complaints from me about who he's playing, regardless of the character. Who knows, maybe he'll strap on his Tony Blair suit again. http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Michael-Sheen-Enters-Talks-For-Tim-Burton-s-Dark-Shadows-23877.html

Josh Brolin and Tim Burton Teaming Up for THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 28th, 2011

It looks like Tim Burton may actually be making a film without Johnny Depp in the near future. The Alice in Wonderland director is in the early stages of developing a film version of Victor Hugo’s classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame with Josh Brolin set to produce and star. Heat Vision reports that the project is in the very early stages, with Burton waiting on a script to officially sign on for the flick.
Warner Bros. has tapped Kieran and Michele Mulroney (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) to adapt Hugo’s 1831 novel. Hunchback tells the story of a deformed bell-ringer in Notre Dame who tragically falls in love with a gypsy. Burton has a pretty full plate, as he’s currently prepping Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp, but if he likes the script that comes in he could tackle this next. Brolin recently signed on to Cogan’s Trade with Brad Pitt and is looking to direct and star in Pitz & Joe. Hit the jump for a synopsis of Hugo’s novel.

Mandy Moore and Rodrigo Santoro Join FALLING SLOWLY

by Jason Barr    Posted: February 28th, 2011

Mandy Moore (Tangled) and Rodrigo Santoro (I Love You Phillip Morris) will star in the supernatural thriller Falling Slowly. The film will mark the directorial debut of Buried scribe Chris Sparling and the sparse details provided by Variety confirm that Moore and Santoro will make turns as a couple whose apartment is “haunted by a dark presence.” Julie Snyder will produce the pic which is garnering my early attention solely based upon the strength of Sparling’s Buried script (for which he won the National Board of Review award for Best Original Screenplay).
In addition to Falling Slowly, Santoro also lends his pipes to the upcoming Fox animated film Rio alongside Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg. As for Moore, the recording artist-turned-actress performed a song from Tangled (for which she voiced the lead) at last night’s Academy Awards ceremony.

Farrelly Brothers Working on "Dumb and Dumber" Sequel

Posted: February 28th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Moviehole caught up with the Farrelly brothers at the "Hall Pass" junket and asked if the duo are considering making a sequel to one of their many hits.

"['Dumb and Dumber'] has run a bunch of times on TV in the states, and kids will come up and they'll be able to quote lines from that – lines that I've long forgotten," said Bobby Farrelly. "If we could get those two guys back together, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels that might be a worthwhile sequel – and that ball is in motion."

He added: "We're starting to think about what those two dimwits would be doing twenty-years later in life, and hopefully we'll be able to come up with something worthy of a sequel."

Anne Hathaway Says She's Catwoman, Not Just Selena Kyle

published: 2011-03-01 00:19:09 Author: Josh Tyler
When Warner Bros. made the official announcement that Anne Hathaway was joining the cast of The Dark Knight Rises, they announced her as playing Selina Kyle. Kyle is the name of the woman beneath Catwoman’s mask which left everyone wondering whether she’ll actually get in the Catwoman costume or will she just be some chick in a pencil skirt with a strange affinity for cats?

Anne sort of answered the question for herself earlier today on Oprah while talking up the job she did hosting the Oscars last night. I say sort of because it’s not as if she looked at the camera and said she’d be wearing the costume. But while talking about her part in Batman she repeatedly refers to the character she’s playing as “Catwoman” and at one point even waves her hands around and shouts “I am Catwoman!” It seems a pretty good indicator that she’ll be doing more than just playing that crazy cat lady named Selina from apartment 2B down the hall. Here’s the full, one-minute Oprah clip. Glean from it what you will:

Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter May Reteam with Tim Burton for DARK SHADOWS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 15th, 2011

Michelle Pfeiffer is in talks to join the cast of Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows.  The film is an adaptation of the 1960s gothic soap opera of the same name.  Johnny Depp (who else) will star as Barnabas Collins, “a self-loathing vampire living in a Maine manor who is searching for his lost love.” According to Heat Vision, Pfeiffer is in negotiations for the role of “Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, the reclusive matriarch of the Collins family which runs the Maine town. The character has not left the mansion since the disappearance of her husband a decade earlier.”  Meanwhile, Deadline reports that Helena Bonham Carter (again, who else) is in talks to play “Hoffman, a specialist in psychology and rare blood disorders who moves into Collinwood. While she initially is a threat to the vampire Barnabas, she eventually becomes his ally, who might be able to cure him of his thirst for blood.” Jackie Earle Haley, Eva Green, and Bella Heathcote have signed on to the project in the previous weeks.
Pfeiffer recently signed on to costar in the romantic-comedy New Year’s Eve and Alex Kurtzman’s directorial debut Welcome to People starring Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks.  Pfeiffer previously played Catwoman in Burton’s 1992 film, Batman Returns.  Bonham Carter has costarred in six of Burton’s movies dating back to his remake of Planet of the Apes.

Ray Liotta Joins COGAN’S TRADE; Casey Affleck, Mark Ruffalo, Javier Bardem Confirmed to Co-Star

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 15th, 2011

When we last left Andrew Dominik’s adaptation of George V. Higgins’ crime novel Cogan’s Trade, the film was stacking up a great cast led by Brad Pitt and costarring James Gandolfini, Sam Rockwell, Bella Heathcote, and Richard Jenkins.  Also rumored to be in the cast were Casey Affleck, Mark Ruffalo, and Javier Bardem.  Risky Business now confirms that not only are Affleck, Ruffalo, and Bardem in the mix, but Ray Liotta is getting in the game as well.
The story of Cogan’s Trade revolves around a mob enforcer (Pitt) who must investigate the robbery of a high-stakes poker game.  Liotta is set to play “Mark ‘Markie’ Trattman, the unfortunate hustler who runs the game in a motel room and finds things only going downhill from there.”  Filming begins later this month in New Orleans for an early 2012 release.  The only way I can see this cast getting any better is if the rumor about Bill Murray joining the film comes true.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

SHERLOCK HOLMES II Titled SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS

Chalk this up as our second official title news in as many days.  Yesterday, we reported that Marc Webb’s upcoming Spider-Man film would be called The Amazing Spider-Man.  Today, we can confirm that Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes sequel is officially titled Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.  This news comes courtesy of E! Online [via /Film] and really doesn’t change anything about the film except that we no longer have to refer to it in any number of ambiguous ways (i.e. Untitled Sherlock Holmes Sequel or Sherlock Holmes II).
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows hits theaters later this year on December 16th.  The film stars Robert Downey Jr. Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Noomi Rapace, and Stephen Fry.

Eva Green Joins DARK SHADOWS

by Jason Barr    Posted: February 3rd, 2011

Eva Green will play the female lead in the Tim Burton-directed adaptation of Dark Shadows.  Per Deadline, the actress is in negotiations to make a turn as Angelique who, in the 60s television series, was a “powerful witch who was alternately tormented and bewitched by her love-hate relationship with Barnabas Collins.”  Given that the adaptation is being handled by Burton, Johnny Depp will naturally be playing the aforementioned Collins opposite of Green.
In addition to Green and Depp, we reported yesterday that Jackie Earle Haley and Bella Heathcote are also in talks to make turns in Dark Shadows.  Burton will begin shooting the project, first written by John August and most recently updated by Seth Grahme-Smith, this April.

Jason Segel Is DreamWorks’ UNDERCOVER COP

by Jason Barr    Posted: February 3rd, 2011

Like it or not (personally, I like it) Jason Segel has become a leading man.  Having built his stock with solid efforts in films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I Love You, Man, Segel is now taking on the lead role in DreamWorks’ “80s-era comedy” Undercover Cop.  According to Risky Business, Undercover Cop is inspired by the true story of a “former cop that infiltrated the New Jersey criminal underworld.”
Jason Micallef will pen the script.  The scribe’s lone existing writing credit comes in the form of the comedy Butter starring Hugh Jackman and Olivia Wilde.  DreamWorks is developing the currently director-less project alongside Steven Zaillian at Film Rites.  As for Segel, in addition to Undercover Cop, the actor has been keeping busy with Disney’s The Muppets and can also be seen on June 24th alongside Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz in the comedy Bad Teacher.

Hugh Jackman and Shawn Levy Take On An Untitled Action/Adventure Project at 20th Century Fox

by Jason Barr    Posted: February 3rd, 2011

In spite of the fact that it won’t debut for another nine months, 20th Century Fox is apparently quite pleased with the Real Steel actor/director pairing of Hugh Jackman and Shawn Levy (Date Night). Today, the studio announced that the two will reunite on an as-of-yet untitled action/adventure project. While low on details (the project was picked up as a pitch), Deadline reports that the film will be penned by former Lost writer/show runner Carlton Cuse and that Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment moniker will also produce.
Jackman and Levy’s upcoming film, Real Steel, is currently set to open later this year on October 7th. In addition to Jackman, the film also stars Hope Davis, Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand, and Anthony Mackie. Real Steel is set in a near-future in which robots that literally weigh one ton (and yet still resemble humans) duke it out. ***Hollywood’s Top Earners in 2010

Hollywood’s Top Earners in 2010

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 2nd, 2011

Vanity Fair has posted their annual list of the Hollywood folk who earned the most from making movies in 2010, and I love that they break every total down into upfront fees, back-end, and ancilliary revenue.  The top 10 is split between actors — Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Adam Sandler, Taylor Lautner, Robert Downey Jr. — and producer/directors — James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, Tim Burton, Todd Phillips.  Hit the jump to see how they ranked and what they earned.
The list only counts money made from film-related projects (i.e. no television or advertisement paychecks), and counts the income made from January 1 to December 31, 2010 no matter when the movie was/will be released.  This excludes $50 million Cameron’s 2010 total, but he had no problem claiming the top spot with all his Avatar funds.
It’s funny to that Theme Park Consultant was Spielberg’s most profitable job last year.  I was taken aback by his $20 million upfront fee to write and produce War Horse — never got the sense the drama would have the scale that merits such a large paycheck for behind-the-camera talent.
Kinda sad to see only 6 females in the top 40, none of whom made the top 10.  But man is it cool to see Christopher Nolan in the top five without any help from Batman — his only source of income an entirely original property.
Vanity Fair posted the top 40 at their site.  Here are the top 10:

1. James Cameron – $257 million
  • $248 million: Avatar (back-end for writing, producing, and directing, based on 2010 worldwide box-office gross of $1.95 billion, and share of DVD and pay-television revenue; excludes $50 million earned in 2009)
  • $5 million: Avatar (share of toy licensing, other revenue)
  • $4 million: Older film revenue (e.g., back-end and royalties from earlier projects, other payments)
2. Johnny Depp - $100 million
  • $40 million: Alice in Wonderland (back-end for starring, based on worldwide gross of $1.02 billion)
  • $35 million: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (up-front money)
  • $20 million: The Tourist (fee for starring)
  • $5 million: Older film revenue
3. Steven Spielberg – $80 million

  • $10 million: Older film revenue

  • $3 million: Back-end for starring in Shutter Island, older film revenue

  • $2 million: Older film revenue
8. Todd Phillips – $34 million
  • $15 million: The Hangover Part II (fee for writing, producing, and directing)
  • $13 million: The Hangover (back-end for producing and directing; excludes $39 million earned in 2009)
  • $3 million: Due Date (back-end for producing and directing, based on worldwide gross of $200 million, as of December 31, 2010)
