***Julie Andrews, Gemma Arterton, Matthew Goode, and Gabriel Byrne to Star in Agatha Christe Adaptation CROOKED HOUSE; Neil LaBute Will Direct ***Teaser Poster for THE MUPPETS ***The Weinstein Company Acquires THE IRON LADY Starring Meryl Streep ***Yvonne Strahovski Joins Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand in MY MOTHER’S CURSE

Teaser Poster for THE MUPPETS
by Kevin Panasiewicz Posted: May 14th, 2011 at 10:38 am

The first teaser poster for Disney’s The Muppets has popped up online, albeit as a blurry and off-center snapshot taken by a fan in Montreal, but that’s better than nothing right? It features the classic characters Gonzo (my personal favorite), Fozzie Bear, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and Animal walking out onto what appears to be a stage aglow with spotlights. It’s awesome to have the Muppet gang back, but this picture creeps me out. THEY’RE WALKING, as in with legs — it’s too much too soon. Hit the jump to see what the Muppets look like in all their anatomically correct glory.

Julie Andrews, Gemma Arterton, Matthew Goode, and Gabriel Byrne to Star in Agatha Christe Adaptation CROOKED HOUSE; Neil LaBute Will Direct
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: May 14th, 2011 at 10:29 am

Julie Andrews, Gemma Arterton, Matthew Goode, and Gabriel Byrne have signed on to star in an adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel Crooked House. In the murder mystery is set against “the backdrop of three generations of a family that lives together in a large and seemingly crooked house.” Every member of the eccentric family has motive to have killed the multimillionaire patriarch, Aristide Leonide. Neil LaBute (Death at a Funeral) will direct from a script by Julian Fellowes (The Tourist) and Tim Rose Price (The Serpent’s Kiss). The $20 million production is scheduled to shoot this summer in the U.K. The story calls for a large ensemble, so expect more casting notices in the near future. Andrews, Goode, and Byrne — and sure, let’s throw in the lovely Arterton — is a very good start.

Yvonne Strahovski Joins Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand in MY MOTHER’S CURSE
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: May 14th, 2011 at 9:55 am

Paramount has signed Chuck star Yvonne Strahovski to star opposite Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand in My Mother’s Curse. The story revolves around “an inventor (Rogen) who invites his mother (Streisand) on a cross-country trip as he tries to sell his new product while also reuniting her with a lost love.” According to THR, Strahovski will play the high school sweetheart that Rogen’s character once proposed to. Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) will direct from a script by Dan Fogelman (Tangled), based on his own experience traveling with Mrs. Fogelman.

NBC just renewed Chuck for a fifth and final season. If there is any justice, the careers of Strahovski and Zachary Levi will be sufficiently launched by the end of the series. The Aussie actress will make her Hollywood feature debut opposite Jason Statham, Robert De Niro, and Clive Owen in The Killer Elite.

Joel Edgerton and Luke Evans Top Contenders for Role of Tom Buchanan in THE GREAT GATSBY
by Adam Chitwood Posted: May 14th, 2011 at 9:30 pm

Director Baz Luhrmann continues to fill out the cast for his 3D adaptation of The Great Gatsby. His primary cast of Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as Daisy is set, and he’s now turned his attention to the crucial role of Tom Buchanan. Ben Affleck was previously circling the part, but was ultimately unable to fit the film into his schedule as his next directorial effort Argo starts production in September and Gatbsy is poised to roll in August. Now it looks like Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom) and Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans) have emerged as frontrunners for the role. Hit the jump for more, as well as a synopsis of the book.

Warner Bros. has provided us six new TV spots for The Hangover Part II to promote the May 26 release. This set of TV spots feature new footage not previously seen in the trailer or prior TV spots for those who want that extra taste. It will be difficult to recapture the lightning in a bottle that made the original so great, but everything we’ve seen so far is promisingly very funny.

Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galfianakis, Justin Bartha, and Ken Jeong reprise their roles for the comedy sequel directed by Todd Phillips. Watch the TV spots after the break.

The first unofficial set photos from Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters have leaked online.  Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton star as the title characters who are still harboring resentment because they were almost killed by witches when they were kids.  There’s nothing super-remarkable about the photos although you’ll see that just because you’re hunting witches, doesn’t mean you can’t look stylish.
Hit the jump to check out the set photos.  Directed by Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow), the film also stars Famke Janssen, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, and Peter Stormare.  Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters opens in 3D on March 2, 2012.

Trailer and Poster for EVERYTHING MUST GO Starring Will Ferrell

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 31st, 2011

The trailer and poster have gone online for the upcoming indie comedy Everything Must Go starring Will Ferrell.  Ferrell plays a man who has been laid off from his job and decides to sell all of his material possessions in an epic yard sale.  The movie picked up positive notices last year when it played at the Toronto Film Festival and this trailer has me interested because it shows Will Ferrell but he’s not screaming or stating the obvious or stating the obvious while screaming.  He seems to be giving a genuine, low-key performance and it’s a welcome change-of-pace from his regular, broad comic fare.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster.  The film also stars Rebecca Hall, Michael Peña, Laura Dern, Stephen Root, and Christopher Jordan Wallace.  Everything Must Go opens May 13th.

Will Michael Sheen Parent Gulliver McGrath in DARK SHADOWS?

by Jason Barr    Posted: March 31st, 2011

Alongside the news that child actor Gulliver McGrath (The Loved Ones) will play the role of David Collins in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows also comes word that Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon) is the leading candidate to play his father, Roger Collins. Deadline is reporting the tentative rumor that Sheen is Burton’s top choice for the role although nothing is confirmed as of yet. For now, McGrath joins a cast that already includes Johnny Depp, Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jackie Early Haley, and Bella Heathcoate. As you may already expect, Helena Bonham Carter is believed to be officially joining the cast at some point as well.
Previously, Sheen provided voice work as White Rabbit in Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. He is also experienced in working with supernatural-based material given his respective turns in the Underworld and Twilight franchises. As for McGrath, the young actor was previously a finalist to play the namesake in Martin Scorsese’s Hugo Cabret. His role of David Collins was held by Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the 90s reboot of the television series. .........more; http://collider.com/michael-sheen-dark-shadows-gulliver-mcgrath/83406/

Sony Pictures Classics to Release Gus Van Sant’s RESTLESS Starring Mia Wasikowska

by Jason Barr   Posted: March 31st, 2011

restless-slice
In November of last year, we reported that Sony had moved Oscar-nominated director Gus Van Sant’s (Milk) drama Restless from its January 28th release date to an unspecified date later in 2011. While the film, starring Mia Wasikowska and Henry Hopper, is still without a solid release date (sometime around the fall 2011 festival season might make sense), a press release from Sony earlier today confirms that it has been shifted to the studio’s Sony Pictures Classics division who will handle its domestic distribution.
As a reminder, Restless tells the story of a terminally ill girl (Wasikowska) who befriends a gentleman who attends funerals for the heck of it (Hopper) and their ensuing friendship. You can check out a trailer for the film by clicking here. Hit the jump to check out the full press release.

Trailer and 4 Images for GIRL WALKS INTO A BAR Starring Carla Gugino, Zachary Quinto, and Rosario Dawson

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 17th, 2011

The trailer for Girl Walks into a Bar has gone online.  The film has an impressive cast that includes Carla Gugino, Zachary Quinto, Danny DeVito, Josh Hartnett, Rosario Dawson, Alexis Bledel, and Robert Forster.  Based solely on the trailer, I have no idea was to what the movie’s about.  But Girl’s hook doesn’t seem to be it’s cast or its story, but rather its distribution method.  Girl Walks into a Bar will be presented by Lexus and YouTube for free, exclusively on YouTube.  The money quote in the press release comes from Lexus VP of Marketing Dave Nordstrom:
“It seems fitting to support this initiative as we launch our most unconfined vehicle yet—the CT 200h hybrid —in a space that we know will reach an unconventional, sophisticated audience.” (emphasis mine)
Clearly, Mr. Nordstrom has never been on YouTube.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer, four images from the film, and the full press release.  Girl Walks into a Bar goes online March 11th.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead, NOT Robin McLeavy, Cast as Mary Todd Lincoln in ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 17th, 2011

So you remember how earlier this week we told you that Robin McLeavy was going to be playing Mary Todd Lincoln in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter?  Yeah…well, you see that’s a funny thing because now Heat Vision is reporting that the role is going Mary Elizabeth Winstead.  Winstead has been on a bit of a hot-streak lately when it comes to circling high-profile projects.  She was in the running for Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo (the role went to Scarlett Johansson), SHIELD Agent Maria Hill in The Avengers (the role went to How I Met Your Mother’s Cobie Smulders), and rumored for Lois Lane in Superman (along with every other young actress in Hollywood).
Winstead, who was last seen in theaters in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, will join rising stars Benjamin Walker, Anthony Mackie, and Dominic Cooper in Timur Bekmambetov’s 3D adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s novel.  She’ll next been seen in Matthijs van Heijningen’s remake/prequel The ThingAbraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is due out June 22, 2012.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS, Starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, Set for March 2, 2012

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 17th, 2011

Paramount has set Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters for March 2, 2012.  The film spins the Grimm fairy tale to where Hansel and Gretel are now adults (played by Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, respectively) and bounty-hunters who specialize in the witch-killin’ business.  Famke Janssen will play the leader of the witches.  Will Ferrell, Chris Henchy, Adam McKay, and Kevin J. Messick will produce with Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola at the helm.
Currently, the only competition Hansel & Gretel will have that weekend is the animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax.  Both films are currently set to be released in 3D. [Deadline]

Rosamund Pike Cast as Andromeda in WRATH OF THE TITANS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 8th, 2011

Rosamund Pike is an actress who has been circling big-name properties like X-Men: First Class and more recently, Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot.  However, it looks like rather than tangle with the Man of Steel, she’ll be joining Jonathan Liebesman Clash of the Titans sequel, Wrath of the TitansDeadline reports that Pike will play Andromeda in the film and that it will be a much larger role than in the 2010 film (when it was played by Alexa Davalos, who was “unavailable for the sequel”).  For those unfamiliar with Pike, she first broke out in 2002’s Die Another Day, and has done some strong supporting work in recent indie films such as An Education and Barney’s Version.
Wrath of the Titans also stars Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, and Liam Neeson.  The film is due out in 3D on March 30, 2012.

Paul Verhoeven to Direct Halle Berry in THE STUDENT

by Tommy Cook    Posted: February 8th, 2011

The great schlock-master Paul Verhoeven has finally gotten another project off the ground post 2006’s well-received Black Book. Per Badass Digest, the new film will not be The Surrogate – the rumored Halle Berry centric evil surrogate mother flick – but instead The Student, a new Halle Berry centric ‘younger student has an affair with older married woman’ type flick. This seems like familiar terrain for the Dutch auteur Verhoeven having so memorably explored the potentially lethal side effects of affairs in Basic Instinct and the under-seen The Fourth Man.  Hit the jump for more Verhoeven love.

Trailer for TRUST Starring Clive Owen and Catherine Keener

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 8th, 2011

trust-movie-image-catherine-keener-slice-01
The domestic trailer for Trust has gone online.  It’s better than the promo trailer for the film since it moves away from the revenge-thriller angle and sets up the movie more as an emotional family drama.  Unfortunately, it still feels a bit too much like a Dateline piece and at any moment Chris Hansen might come in and ask someone to take a seat.  I’m holding out hope for the flick even though it received a lukewarm response when it played at the Toronto Film Festival.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Trust stars Clive Owen, Catherine Keener, Liana Liberato, Jason Clarke, and Viola Davis.  It opens April 1st.

Zooey Deschanel Heading to TV with New Fox Comedy CHICKS AND DICKS

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: February 8th, 2011

Her sister Emily Deschanel has had a comfortable home on Fox Television with the crime comedy series Bones, but now Zooey Deschanel looks to be making a move to TV as well. Deadline reports the (500) Days of Summer actress is in talks to star in a new comedy series from writer/producer Liz Meriwether (No Strings Attached). Originally titled Chicks and Dicks, the currently untitled series is described as a young ensemble comedy about the sexual politics of men and women. Deschanel is looking at taking the roe of Jessica, an optimistic but unlucky in love elementary school teacher who, after her most recent break-up, moves out of her apartment with her ex and moves in with 3 juvenile guys. Yep, that sounds like the start of a sitcom to me.
This would be Ms. Deschanel’s first regular TV role (she previously had guest spots on Weeds and Bones). The actress was previously reported to be attached to an HBO pilot based on groupie extraordinaire Pamela Des Barres’ book I’m With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie, but the project apparently isn’t moving forward. Her jump to television seems somewhat surprising considering her regular work in feature films, so I guess the script must be pretty damn good.

*Meryl Streep to Reteam with Director David Frankel for GREAT HOPE SPRINGS **Richard Jenkins Joins COGAN’S TRADE ***Famke Janssen Signs on for HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS Starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton

Meryl Streep to Reteam with Director David Frankel for GREAT HOPE SPRINGS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 8th, 2011

Last year, we reported that Meryl Streep was circling Great Hope Springs with Mike Nicholas at the helm.  The story “follows a middle-aged couple who after thirty years of marriage attend an intense counseling weekend to examine the intimacy issues that are threatening their marriage.”  Today, we’ve received a press release announcing that Streep is in final negotiations to take the role, but that it won’t be with Nichols in the director’s chair.  Instead, the film is now being helmed by David Frankel who directed Streep in The Devil Wears Prada.
The press release makes no mention of James Gandolfini or Philip Seymour Hoffman, who were rumored to play Streep’s husband and therapist, respectively.  Hit the jump for the full press release.

Richard Jenkins Joins COGAN’S TRADE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 8th, 2011

The cast for Andrew Dominik’s adaptation of Cogan’s Trade is becoming even more impressive.  The film already stars Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, Sam Rockwell, rising star Bella Heathcote, and now the great Richard Jenkins has joined the picture.  Pitt is set to play Jackie Cogan, “a professional enforcer who investigates a heist that takes place during a high-stakes poker game held under the protection of the mob.”  According to Variety, “Jenkins will play a lawyer who relays inside information about the card game.”  Filming is set to begin later this month in New Orleans.
Jenkins will be seen later this year in Hall Pass, Friends with Benefits, and The Rum Diary.  He’s also in talks to play a nun in the Farrelly Brothers’ adaptation of The Three Stooges.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of Cogan’s Trade.

Famke Janssen Signs on for HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS Starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 8th, 2011

Famke Janssen has joined the cast of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.  The re-imagining of the Grimm fairy tale that has the brother and sister (played by Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton) as adults who survived their encounter at the gingerbread house and have become full-time witch-slayers.  The script is from All You Need Is Kill screenwriter D.W. Harper, and Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) will direct.  The Playlist originally confirmed the casting, and Deadline reports that Janssen will play the leader of the witches.
Filming is slated to begin March 7th in order to accommodate the small window of time in Renner’s schedule when he’s wrapped on Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol but hasn’t yet begun work on The Avengers.

SPIDER-MAN Reboot On Set Pictures

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: January 4th, 2011

A few pictures from the set of Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot have hit the net as the production was recently filming at a local Los Angeles High School.  In the pictures you can see Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone sitting on the bleachers.  Hit the jump for more:
According to JustJared (who supplied the pictures), the two stars shared a kiss during the scene.
With the production continuing to film on location, you can expect plenty of images to hit the net.  It probably won’t be long until another major spoiler is revealed.  If you want to stay spoiler free, it’s going to be tough. You have to wonder if Sony will release an image of Garfield in costume soon so it doesn’t end up online before Sony wants to premiere it.  If I were Sony, I’d want to control who gets that first image and make sure it looks good.  But what do I know…
Here’s some of the photos that hit the net.  For all our previous Spider-Man reboot coverage, click here.

Gemma Arterton to Star in HANSEL & GRETEL

by Jason Barr    Posted: January 4th, 2011

Gemma Arterton has signed on to star alongside Jeremy Renner in Paramount’s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.  Described by Heat Vision as a “a dark action movie that picks up with the fairy tale siblings years after the traumatic childhood incident has turned them into bounty hunters,” Hansel & Gretel is being directed by Norway’s own Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow).
Per the report, Arterton beat out Diane Kruger (Inglorious Bastards), Eva Green (Casino Royale), and Noomi Rapace (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) for the lead role which could begin shooting in Berlin as early as this March.  It is believed that Paramount would like to push Hansel & Gretel ahead of Fox’s own 3D action flick Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter which is currently aiming at a June 22nd, 2012 release.  In addition to Witch Hunters, Arterton also landed a role recently alongside Andrew Garfield in Michael Mann’s Capa.

A teaser trailer for Giovanni Veronesi’s The Ages of Love (formerly Manual of Love 3, which sounded like it should be on late-night Cinemax) has gone online.  The film is an anthology of love stories set in Italy and has received attention because it’s managed to land Robert De Niro and Monica Bellucci in one of the storylines.  As we previously reported, De Niro will play a divorced American professor living in Rome and his role will partially be spoken in Italian.  Bellucci will play his love interest.

Keanu Reeves, as we all know, is an unconventional man, but to see himself buying your Christmas tree and carry it on top of his Porsche, I realize that this guy, oddly enough, is family and tradition ! Keanu was in the company of his longtime friend Brenda!

Gemma Arterton and Andrew Garfield to Star in CAPA

by Kimberly Lucas    Posted: December 26th, 2010

It should come as no surprise that Gemma Arterton and Andrew Garfield, two of the year’s most sought-after and interesting new stars, will join forces. Arterton says she will star opposite Garfield in the new Michael Mann film Capa, which tells the story of the two-year romance between Gerda Taro and war photographer Robert Capa. Based on Susana Fortes’ award-winning novel Waiting for Robert Capa, Mann wants to create a “gritty, low-budget film.”
For more on Garfield, Arterton, and Capa, continue after the jump.
It is true that Garfield is the man of the hour after The Social Network, Never Let Me Go, and landing the lead of Spider-Man, a role he says feels like a “dream realized.” But the rise of Arterton’s star following Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia has not been lost on Total Film.  The site deemed Arterton the “Hottest Actress” and Garfield the “Hottest Actor” of 2010.
Arterton expressed her excitement in a statement to Total Film:
waiting_for_robert_capa_book_cover
“I’m attached to about nine projects but I’m not sure which one’s I’m allowed to talk about. But I’m aiming for even more diversity. Capa is confirmed, so I should be working with your hottest actor, Andy Garfield!”
Both Capa and the pastural comedy Tamara Drewe will offer Arterton’s mainstream audience a fun change of pace, who is used to seeing her in blockbusters running around in a desert — first with Sam Worthington, then with Jake Gyllenhaal.
Here is the synopsis for Waiting for Robert Capa:
Love, war and photography marked the real-life romance between the war photographers Robert Capa and Gerda Taro during the Spanish Civil War. They were young, anti-Fascist, good-looking, and nonconformist. They had everything in life, and they put everything at risk. They created their own legend and remained faithful to it until the very end! A young German woman named Gerta Pohorylle and a young Hungarian man named Endre Friedmann meet in Paris in 1935. Both Communists, Jewish, exiled, and photographers, they decide to change their names in order to sell their work more easily, and so they become Gerda Taro and Robert Capa. With these new identities, they travel to Spain and begin to document the Spanish Civil War. Two years later, tragedy will befall them — but until then, theirs is a romance for the ages. [Amazon]
