Milo Ventimiglia, Sara Paxton, and Sarah Shahi to Star in 3D Thriller STATIC

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 30th, 2011

Now that Heroes is dead and buried, the cast has plenty of free time to move on to other projects, potentially even projects that have compelling storylines and logical character motivations.  The Wrap reports that Milo Ventimiglia is moving on to the 3D thriller Static and will join Sara Paxton (Last House on the Left) and Sarah Shahi (The L Word).  The story centers on “a young couple (Ventimiglia and Shahi) who are on the verge of divorce after the loss of their child, but their world changes when a young visitor arrives, bringing supernatural implications to the household.”  So it’s like Rabbit Hole but in 3D with supernatural implications! Score!
Static will mark the feature directing debut of commercial director Todd Levin.  Despite being in 3D, the film’s budget is set at less than $1 million and will control costs by using Sony’s PMW-F3 cameras, which are the company’s answer to the popular RED 3D camera. ............... more; http://collider.com/static-milo-ventimiglia-sara-paxton/83223/

David Schwimmer Interview TRUST

by Christina Radish    Posted: March 30th, 2011

In the drama Trust, directed by David Schwimmer, 14-year-old Annie (Liana Liberato) makes a new friend online that she thinks is a 16-year-old boy named Charlie. Even though her parents (Clive Owen and Catherine Keener) think their daughter spends too much time chatting online, at first it seems like a harmless connection, sharing volleyball tips in a chat room. After it becomes much more, Annie then starts to realize that Charlie is not who he claims to be, but still agrees to meet him in person, which results in events so traumatic that it forever changes the lives of the entire family.
At the film’s press day, actor/director David Schwimmer talked about his interest in such a disturbing but very real subject, the importance of casting an actress that was age appropriate to play Annie, the affect that the Internet has had on children and teenagers, and how, even though he loves acting, he also loves the opportunity to be the storyteller, at times. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling Offered Roles in GANGSTER SQUAD; David Yates May Direct Capone Biopic CICERO

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 30th, 2011

While major studios are gobbling up scripts centered on supernatural creatures, Warner Bros. is still finding time to make movies about good, old-fashioned human monsters.  According to Deadline, the studio is offering Sean Penn the role of vicious mobster Mickey Cohen in Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad.  The studio is also offering Ryan Gosling the role of one of the two cops who were tasked with taking Cohen down.  Gangster Squad is based on a series of articles by Paul Lieberman that chronicled an elite squad of Los Angeles police officers in the 1940s and the screenplay is by former LA cop Will Beall.  The crime drama is one of the higher-profile pics currently set up at Warner Bros. and Deadline says the role of the charismatic Cohen, a former boxer who became an associate of legendary gangsters Meyer Lansky and Bugsy Siegel, could be as memorable as Robert De Niro’s turn as Al Capone in The Untouchables.
And Capone may also be getting his own film at Warner Bros.  Hit the jump for details on the Capone biopic, Cicero.

Bryan Cranston to Play Villain in TOTAL RECALL Remake

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 30th, 2011

How do you get me interested in a Len Wiseman-directed remake of Paul Verhoeven’s Total Recall?  Step 1: Hire Bryan Cranston.  Step 2: There is no Step 2.  Variety reports that the three-time Emmy winner will play the film’s villain opposite Colin Farrell.  However, Variety doesn’t say which villain role Cranston will be playing.  Is it the thuggish Richter (originally played by Michael Ironside) or is it the more likely role of big bad Martian administrator Vilos Cohaagen (originally played by Ronny Cox)?  Either way, this film now has Cranston and that’s cause enough to be excited.  [Update: Heat Vision has details on the plot and says Cranston is playing Cohaagen:
"The new story involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, with Douglas Quaid (Farrell) a factory worker in the latter who begins to believe he is a spy, although he doesn't know for which side.  Cranston would play Vilos Cohaagen, the leader of Euromerica who, under the cover of protecting his people, is secretly readying an invasion of New Shanghai."]
The Breaking Bad actor is currently at work on the show’s upcoming season, which is set to debut this July.  Cranston will also be seen in theaters later this year in Tom Hanks’ Larry Crowne, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, and Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion.

Uma recently chatted about her other movie, Bel Ami, and had nothing but nice things to say about co-star Robert Pattinson.

“[He] is, I think, going to be a really serious actor. I think he’s incredibly concrete in his presence on the set and obviously is very handsome. [He] is a very nice person and he’s sensitive,” she told MTV News.

Robert Pattinson & Reese Witherspoon Cover EW
Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon get cozy on the cover of Entertainment Weekly’s latest issue, on newsstands Friday (March 25).

Here’s what the Water for Elephants stars had to share:

Rob, on working with Reese: “There’s something about her. She’s just this genuinely nice person. I don’t know if she puts an effort into creating a nice aura, but her mood dissipates over the whole set. It was a completely different environment from when she wasn’t there. All the kids and the animals were just drawn to her. It made it incredibly easy to do my part - all my reaction shots are just watching her work brilliantly. She’s really cool and she’s just…never, ever annoying. God, that’s the worst description, isn’t it?”

Reese, on working with Rob: “He’s an incredibly hardworking person with an incredible work ethic. He doesn’t ever complain. Not once. Which is sort of lower than the national average for actors. They’re always complaining. Especially the men!”

Rob, on whether he thinks he’ll live a more normal life after Twilight: “It’s funny how it’s ending in 2012. This is how the world will end. But, um, I don’t know. I think most of people’s recognition is based on the magazines and stuff. All the gossip stories won’t work - they’re always combined with Twilight, so once that’s done and it can’t be combined with the promotion of the film, I think it will end. Because I have an obscenely boring life.”

*Paul Verhoeven to Direct Halle Berry in THE STUDENT **Rosamund Pike Cast as Andromeda in WRATH OF THE TITANS ***Trailer for TRUST Starring Clive Owen and Catherine Keener ****Zooey Deschanel Heading to TV with New Fox Comedy CHICKS AND DICKS

Rosamund Pike Cast as Andromeda in WRATH OF THE TITANS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 8th, 2011

Rosamund Pike is an actress who has been circling big-name properties like X-Men: First Class and more recently, Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot.  However, it looks like rather than tangle with the Man of Steel, she’ll be joining Jonathan Liebesman Clash of the Titans sequel, Wrath of the TitansDeadline reports that Pike will play Andromeda in the film and that it will be a much larger role than in the 2010 film (when it was played by Alexa Davalos, who was “unavailable for the sequel”).  For those unfamiliar with Pike, she first broke out in 2002’s Die Another Day, and has done some strong supporting work in recent indie films such as An Education and Barney’s Version.
Wrath of the Titans also stars Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, and Liam Neeson.  The film is due out in 3D on March 30, 2012.

Paul Verhoeven to Direct Halle Berry in THE STUDENT

by Tommy Cook    Posted: February 8th, 2011

The great schlock-master Paul Verhoeven has finally gotten another project off the ground post 2006’s well-received Black Book. Per Badass Digest, the new film will not be The Surrogate – the rumored Halle Berry centric evil surrogate mother flick – but instead The Student, a new Halle Berry centric ‘younger student has an affair with older married woman’ type flick. This seems like familiar terrain for the Dutch auteur Verhoeven having so memorably explored the potentially lethal side effects of affairs in Basic Instinct and the under-seen The Fourth Man.  Hit the jump for more Verhoeven love.

Trailer for TRUST Starring Clive Owen and Catherine Keener

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 8th, 2011

trust-movie-image-catherine-keener-slice-01
The domestic trailer for Trust has gone online.  It’s better than the promo trailer for the film since it moves away from the revenge-thriller angle and sets up the movie more as an emotional family drama.  Unfortunately, it still feels a bit too much like a Dateline piece and at any moment Chris Hansen might come in and ask someone to take a seat.  I’m holding out hope for the flick even though it received a lukewarm response when it played at the Toronto Film Festival.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Trust stars Clive Owen, Catherine Keener, Liana Liberato, Jason Clarke, and Viola Davis.  It opens April 1st.

Zooey Deschanel Heading to TV with New Fox Comedy CHICKS AND DICKS

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: February 8th, 2011

Her sister Emily Deschanel has had a comfortable home on Fox Television with the crime comedy series Bones, but now Zooey Deschanel looks to be making a move to TV as well. Deadline reports the (500) Days of Summer actress is in talks to star in a new comedy series from writer/producer Liz Meriwether (No Strings Attached). Originally titled Chicks and Dicks, the currently untitled series is described as a young ensemble comedy about the sexual politics of men and women. Deschanel is looking at taking the roe of Jessica, an optimistic but unlucky in love elementary school teacher who, after her most recent break-up, moves out of her apartment with her ex and moves in with 3 juvenile guys. Yep, that sounds like the start of a sitcom to me.
This would be Ms. Deschanel’s first regular TV role (she previously had guest spots on Weeds and Bones). The actress was previously reported to be attached to an HBO pilot based on groupie extraordinaire Pamela Des Barres’ book I’m With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie, but the project apparently isn’t moving forward. Her jump to television seems somewhat surprising considering her regular work in feature films, so I guess the script must be pretty damn good.
