DEXTER Creator to Helm LOVE, SCOTCH AND DEATH Starring Michael C. Hall and Vera Farmiga
by Adam Chitwood Posted: April 13th, 2011
James Manos Jr., who created the Showtime series Dexter, is poised to make his feature directorial debut with Love, Scotch and Death. The semi-autobiographical film was written by Manos and will star Michael C. Hall and Vera Farmiga. Deadline reports that the story follows a very strange week in the protagonist’s life. Hall’s character returns home from a stressful vacation to find out that his parents have died, leading him on a bizarre path where he encounters “an unsympathetic funeral director, his bewildered children and manic wife, an eccentric priest, and some over-sexed neighbors.”

Filming is scheduled to begin on the independent film this November, after Hall wraps the latest season of Dexter. Manos previously wrote for The Sopranos, winning an Emmy for co-writing the classic first season episode “College.”

Drew Barrymore Talks Next Directorial Project HOW TO BE SINGLE
by Adam Chitwood Posted: April 13th, 2011
Drew Barrymore is poised to make her second feature as a director (after 2009’s Whip It) with the adaptation of Liz Tuccillo’s novel How to Be Single. The romantic comedy follows the “love lives and break-ups of a group of New Yorkers over the span of ten years.” Barrymore recently spoke a bit about the project:

“This has a very wide palette that I really really like. I’m so interested in so many different types of people and lifestyles that there is kind of a lovely mosaic, like a little bit for everybody.”

The screenwriting team from He’s Just Not That Into You, Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn, are set to script the film. Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen (who also produced He’s Just Not That Into You) will produce. Hit the jump for more from Barrymore, including why How to Be Single is not really a romantic comedy, and a synopsis of the novel.

First Trailer for ABDUCTION Starring Taylor Lautner
by Adam Chitwood Posted: April 13th, 2011
The first trailer for the action thriller Abduction, starring Taylor Lautner, has been released. Directed by John Singleton (Boyz n the Hood) the thriller centers around a young man who sets out to uncover the truth after finding a baby photo of himself listed on a missing persons website. While Lautner’s acting still seems a bit too ham-fisted to be taken seriously, the supporting cast is fairly impressive and some of the action sequences actually looked pretty cool. I understand Lautner’s desire to move on to bigger and better things post-Twilight, but the guy’s no Tom Cruise.

Abduction stars Lautner, Lily Collins, Sigourney Weaver, Danny Glover, Alfred Molina, Michael Nyqvist, Maria Bello, and Jason Isaacs. The film is set to be released on September 23rd. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

Olga Kurylenko and Liana Liberato Join Aaron Eckhart in THE EXPATRIATE
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: April 13th, 2011
Since he was first cast in the spy thriller The Expatriate last November, Aaron Eckhart has become a bona fide action star thanks to Battle: Los Angeles ($105 million worldwide and counting). Appropriately, Eckhart will be awarded his own Bond girl for his follow-up. Variety reports Quantum of Solace siren Olga Kurylenko will play “a CIA agent assigned to track down her former CIA partner and lover (Eckhart).” Additionally, Liana Liberato (Trust) has been cast as Eckhart’s daughter. Director Philipp Stölzl is currently filming The Expatriate in Montreal; production will shift to Brussels in May.

Rosamund Pike Cast as Andromeda in WRATH OF THE TITANS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 8th, 2011

Rosamund Pike is an actress who has been circling big-name properties like X-Men: First Class and more recently, Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot.  However, it looks like rather than tangle with the Man of Steel, she’ll be joining Jonathan Liebesman Clash of the Titans sequel, Wrath of the TitansDeadline reports that Pike will play Andromeda in the film and that it will be a much larger role than in the 2010 film (when it was played by Alexa Davalos, who was “unavailable for the sequel”).  For those unfamiliar with Pike, she first broke out in 2002’s Die Another Day, and has done some strong supporting work in recent indie films such as An Education and Barney’s Version.
Wrath of the Titans also stars Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, and Liam Neeson.  The film is due out in 3D on March 30, 2012.

Paul Verhoeven to Direct Halle Berry in THE STUDENT

by Tommy Cook    Posted: February 8th, 2011

The great schlock-master Paul Verhoeven has finally gotten another project off the ground post 2006’s well-received Black Book. Per Badass Digest, the new film will not be The Surrogate – the rumored Halle Berry centric evil surrogate mother flick – but instead The Student, a new Halle Berry centric ‘younger student has an affair with older married woman’ type flick. This seems like familiar terrain for the Dutch auteur Verhoeven having so memorably explored the potentially lethal side effects of affairs in Basic Instinct and the under-seen The Fourth Man.  Hit the jump for more Verhoeven love.

Trailer for TRUST Starring Clive Owen and Catherine Keener

The domestic trailer for Trust has gone online.  It’s better than the promo trailer for the film since it moves away from the revenge-thriller angle and sets up the movie more as an emotional family drama.  Unfortunately, it still feels a bit too much like a Dateline piece and at any moment Chris Hansen might come in and ask someone to take a seat.  I’m holding out hope for the flick even though it received a lukewarm response when it played at the Toronto Film Festival.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Trust stars Clive Owen, Catherine Keener, Liana Liberato, Jason Clarke, and Viola Davis.  It opens April 1st.

Zooey Deschanel Heading to TV with New Fox Comedy CHICKS AND DICKS

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: February 8th, 2011

Her sister Emily Deschanel has had a comfortable home on Fox Television with the crime comedy series Bones, but now Zooey Deschanel looks to be making a move to TV as well. Deadline reports the (500) Days of Summer actress is in talks to star in a new comedy series from writer/producer Liz Meriwether (No Strings Attached). Originally titled Chicks and Dicks, the currently untitled series is described as a young ensemble comedy about the sexual politics of men and women. Deschanel is looking at taking the roe of Jessica, an optimistic but unlucky in love elementary school teacher who, after her most recent break-up, moves out of her apartment with her ex and moves in with 3 juvenile guys. Yep, that sounds like the start of a sitcom to me.
This would be Ms. Deschanel’s first regular TV role (she previously had guest spots on Weeds and Bones). The actress was previously reported to be attached to an HBO pilot based on groupie extraordinaire Pamela Des Barres’ book I’m With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie, but the project apparently isn’t moving forward. Her jump to television seems somewhat surprising considering her regular work in feature films, so I guess the script must be pretty damn good.
