Casting Call: Jason Clarke Signs on for Baz Luhrmann’s THE GREAT GATSBY, Ellie Kemper Joins 21 JUMP STREET, and Josh Stewart Added to THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: June 13th, 2011

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this evening. First up, Baz Lurhmann is close to filling out the cast for his adaptation of The Great Gatsby, as THR reports that Jason Clarke (The Chicago Code) has signed on to play George Wilson, husband of Myrtle. Lurhmann’s A-list cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, Carey Mulligan as Daisy and Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan. Isla Fischer is poised to play Myrtle. The film is gearing up to start filming this fall in Australia.
Additionally, Bridesmaids star Ellie Kemper has landed a supporting role in the 21 Jump Street remake. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum star in the film as young cops undercover at a high school. Variety reports that Kemper will play “an annoyingly sincere chemistry teacher,” who has a crush on Tatum’s character. The cast also includes Brie Larson, Ice Cube and Rob Riggle. Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) are directing. 21 Jump Street hits theaters on March 16th 2012. Hit the jump for the casting of Josh Stewart in The Dark Knight Rises, as well as a synopsis of The Great Gatsby. http://collider.com/jason-clarke-great-gatsby-ellie-kemper-21-jump-street-josh-stewart-dark-knight-rises/96233/

Tom Cruise in Talks for Christopher McQuarrie’s ONE SHOT

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 13th, 2011

Tom Cruise may be adding yet another “starring role in an action-centered film” to his list, this time with Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation of Lee Child’s One Shot. The book is part of a series which centers on Jack Reacher, a former military police officer-turned drifter. Deadline reports that Cruise is now in talks to star in the thriller, which Paramount hopes to turn into a series. McQuarrie, best known as the screenwriter of The Usual Suspects and Bryan Singer’s upcoming Jack the Giant Killer, will be directing from a script he wrote.
Cruise is also attached to star in Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski’s sci-fi flick Oblivion. The current plan, if the deal pans out, is for Cruise to film One Shot this fall before moving on to Oblivion which starts production in January. I’m liking Cruise’s choices as of late. I thought Knight and Day was a smart move back into more action-oriented fare, and he’s assembled a top-notch team for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. He’s currently filming Adam Shankman’s musical adaptation Rock of Ages. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of One Shot. http://collider.com/tom-cruise-one-shot/96228/

Bill Pullman, Debra Winger and THE KILLING’s Joel Kinnaman Join Romantic Comedy LOLA VERSUS

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: June 13th, 2011

Production has begun on Fox Searchlight’s low-budget romantic comedy Lola Versus, and a few new castmembers have been announced. Bill Pullman, Debra Winger and Joel Kinnaman have joined a cast headed up by Greta Gerwig. Hamish Linklater (The New Adventures of Old Christine) has also come aboard the film that tells the story of a 29-year-old woman (Gerwig) who gets dumped be her fiancée (Kinnaman) three weeks before the wedding. She proceeds to embark on a series of desperate encounters as she finds herself questioning her place in the world on the cusp of turning 30.
Kinnamann is best known as one of the stars of AMC’s successful drama series The Killing, which was just recently picked up for a second season. He steps into Lola Versus replacing Orlando Bloom in the role of Gerwig’s fiancée. Daryl Wein (Breaking Upwards) is directing from a script he co-wrote with Zoe Jones. Gillian Jacobs Is SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD; Rob Corddry, Rob Huebel, and Thomas Lennon Join RAPTUREPALOOZA
by Jason Barr Posted: May 17th, 2011 at 6:50 pm

We have a couple of casting bits to bring your way tonight. First up, Community’s Gillian Jacobs has joined Steve Carell and Keira Knightley in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Written/directed by Lorene Scafaria (who wrote the film adaptation of Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist), Friend tells the story of a man (Carell) and woman (Knightley) who embark on a trip to locate the former’s high school sweetheart before an oncoming asteroid ends life on Earth as we know it. THR reports that Jacobs’ role will be that of a “waitress high on Ecstasy that the duo meet on their journey” (which sounds eerily similar to the one Lindsay Sloane was in talks for as of last week). The story also confirms earlier reports that William Peterson, Adam Brody, and Rob Corddry will appear in the film. Production on the film began this week in Los Angeles.

Speaking of Rob Corddry, Variety confirms that he, Rob Huebel (Childrens’ Hospital), and Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!) will star in the post-apocalyptic comedy Rapturepalooza. The trio join a cast that already includes Anna Kendrick (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), John Francis Daley (Bones), and The Office’s Craig Robinson. The promising, albeit low-budget (coming in at less than $2 million), centers on two teens (Kendrick and Daley) who battle their way through the end of the world in order to defeat the Antichrist (Robinson). Paul Middleditch will direct Rapturepalooza for Lionsgate from a script by Chris Matheson.

Joel Edgerton Lands THE GREAT GATSBY
by Jason Barr Posted: May 17th, 2011 at 6:03 pm

Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom) will play the role of Tom Buchanan in director Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 classic, The Great Gatsby. A few days ago, we reported that Edgerton was considered a top contender for the role alongside Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans). Tonight, Deadline confirms that Edgerton has claimed the significant role (once occupied by Ben Affleck) and will join a cast that already includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, and Isla Fisher. In discussing Edgerton’s casting, Luhrmann credited the actor’s physicality and “five-star acting chops” as deciding factors.

In addition to Gatsby, Edgerton can next be seen alongside Tom Hardy in the action/drama Warrior due out later this year on September 9th. The Aussie actor also stars in the remake of John Carpenter’s The Thing alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead which is due out October 14th. Production on Gatsby is set to begin this August in Sydney with an unspecified 2012 3D release date in mind.

Armie Hammer Is THE LONE RANGER
by Jason Barr Posted: May 17th, 2011 at 5:30 pm

Armie Hammer (The Social Network) will star in Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s adaptation of The Lone Ranger. Variety reports that the actor is in final negotiations to take on the iconic role of “The Lone Ranger” which began as a radio show in the 1930s before being adapted into the massively popular television series in 1949. Hammer will play opposite Johnny Depp who has been attached to the project as the Ranger’s trusty sidekick, Tonto, since 2008. Gore Verbinski (Rango) will direct The Lone Ranger from a script by Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road).

Production on the film is expected to begin after Depp wraps Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows adaptation which is due out May 11th, 2012. As for Hammer, his stock continues to rise as he has recently locked down the role of the prince alongside Julia Roberts in The Brothers Grimm: Snow White as well as a supporting role in Clint Eastwood’s Herbert Hoover biopic, Hoover.

Keanu Reeves Will NOT Star in AKIRA; Film Still in Development
by Jason Barr Posted: May 17th, 2011 at 4:47 pm

Talks between Warner Bros. and Keanu Reeves regarding his role in the studio’s adaptation of the manga-turned-anime, Akira, have come to an end with Reeves passing on the project. JoBlo broke the news of the deceased negotiations earlier today which quickly spawned questions concerning the film’s future at the studio. While I’ll stop short of projecting the film’s long-term outlook, for now we have confirmed the accuracy of the original report with the studio who reassures us that Reeves passing on the role has not killed the project which is set to be directed by Albert Hughes (The Hughes Brothers) from a rewritten script by Steve Kloves (the Harry Potter series).

Although the constant back-and-forth regarding Akira casting may appear to be a bleak sign for the project (a shortlist of names including Robert Pattinson and Chris Pine previously appeared here, with names like James Franco and Zac Efron being rumored here and here), it’s worthy to note that many high-profile/big-budget projects such as this have a difficult time getting off of the ground initially. As such, we should most likely expect Warner Bros. to begin courting another upper-echelon name to attach to the project in the near future. For more on Akira, including a statement from the studio, hit the jump.

Joel Edgerton and Luke Evans Top Contenders for Role of Tom Buchanan in THE GREAT GATSBY
by Adam Chitwood Posted: May 14th, 2011 at 9:30 pm

Director Baz Luhrmann continues to fill out the cast for his 3D adaptation of The Great Gatsby. His primary cast of Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as Daisy is set, and he’s now turned his attention to the crucial role of Tom Buchanan. Ben Affleck was previously circling the part, but was ultimately unable to fit the film into his schedule as his next directorial effort Argo starts production in September and Gatbsy is poised to roll in August. Now it looks like Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom) and Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans) have emerged as frontrunners for the role. Hit the jump for more, as well as a synopsis of the book.

Director Neil Jordan and producer Stephen Woolley will reteam for the all-in-the-family vampire pic, Byzantium. Based on an original script by Moira Buffini (Jane Eyre), Byzantium is the story of a deadly pairing of a mother vampire (Arterton) who turns her daughter (Ronan). Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galfianakis, Justin Bartha, and Ken Jeong reprise their roles for the comedy sequel directed by Todd Phillips. Watch the TV spots after the break.

A Bunch of New Images from THE TREE OF LIFE

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: May 11th, 2011 at 3:13 pm

Fox Searchlight has released a bunch of new images from Terrence Malick’s highly-anticipated The Tree of Life.  After years of waiting, audiences will finally get a look at the film when it premieres at the Cannes Film Festival.  However, for all of the Americans who are angry that they’re not attending Cannes (myself included), we won’t have to wait long.  The film is set to open in the U.S. on May 31st.
I’d like to tell you what the film is about, but even after reading the synopsis, I have no idea.  Something to do with faith and family and existence.  The film stars Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, and Sean Penn.  Hit the jump to check out the images along with the inscrutable synopsis.

Hilary Swank Joins Matthew McConaughey in THE DALLAS BUYER’S CLUB; Elizabeth Debicki Signs on for THE GREAT GATSBY

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: May 11th, 2011 at 3:15 pm

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this afternoon. First up, Hilary Swank is set to join Matthew McConaughey in The Dallas Buyer’s Club. Directed by Jean Marc Vallee (The Young Victoria), the film s based on the true story of Ron Woodroof, a heterosexual man who was diagnosed with AIDS in 1986.  Given only a few months to live, Woodroof began to smuggle alternative and illegal treatments into the US and into the hands of other AIDS patients. THR’s report on the matter doesn’t specify what role Swank will be playing. The film is currently being shopped to buyers at Cannes.
Additionally, director Baz Lurhmann continues to fill out his cast for The Great Gatsby as Deadline reports that Australian newcomer Elizabeth Debicki is set to play Jordan Baker in the adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel. Leonardo DiCaprio will take on the role of Gatsby, Tobey Maguire is set as narrator Nick Carraway, Carey Mulligan will portray Daisy and Isla Fischer is in talks to play Myrtle Wilson. Ben Affleck was offered the role of Tom Buchanan, but was forced to turn it down due to scheduling conflicts. The film, which may or may not be shot in 3D, is set to start filming later this year in Australia. Hit the jump for a synopsis of The Great Gatsby.

Mos Def Joins Season Six of DEXTER

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: May 11th, 2011 at 3:20 pm

We just recently learned that Colin Hanks would have a major character arc appearing in all 12 episodes on the forthcoming sixth season of Showtime’s serial killer drama series Dexter, and now another name has surfaced for a major role. THR reports rapper turned actor Mos Def (Be Kind Rewind) will also have a multi-episode arc on the hit series. Production will begin in June with Mos Def playing a hardened ex-con who claims to have found religion yet seems to continually find himself surrounded by violence. Apparently Dexter will actually reveal the truth behind who this man really is behind the front. Meanwhile, the report also reveals Hanks’ character will be a man name Travis, the main nemesis of the sixth season and a highly intelligent ancient artifacts expert who is linked to a series of grisly murders in Miami. Sound good?

John Krasinski, Olivia Thirlby, and Rosemarie DeWitt in Talks for NOBODY WALKS
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: April 19th, 2011
John Krasinski, Olivia Thirlby, and Rosemarie DeWitt are in negotiations to star in Nobody Walks. You are a keen individual, and guessed from the collection of idiosyncratic actors that Nobody Walks is an independent drama. You are correct. (Note: the judges also would have accepted “low-budget dramedy.”) According to Variety, the film depicts one week in the life of “a Los Angeles family who invite a young, charismatic artist into their home, only to find her disrupting their lives.” Director Ry Russo-Young (You Won’t Miss Me) co-wrote the script with rising star Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture). Production is slated for the end of May in Los Angeles.

Ben Affleck Will NOT Star in THE GREAT GATSBY
by Adam Chitwood Posted: April 19th, 2011
It looks like Ben Affleck ultimately will not be joining the cast of Baz Lurhmann’s The Great Gatsby. After working hard to try and fit the film into his schedule, the actor was forced to turn the offer down. Deadline reports that Affleck wasn’t able to commit to The Great Gatsby because filming conflicted with his next directorial project Argo. The actor was up for the role of Tom Buchanan, husband of Carey Mulligan’s Daisy. Leonardo DiCaprio is set as Gatsby himself, and Tobey Maguire will be taking on the role of narrator Nick Carraway. Isla Fischer is also now in talks to play Myrtle Wilson.

Argo, which is being produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov (The American), revolves around the Iran hostage crisis in 1979. Production on The Great Gatsby is set to begin in August in Sydney. No word on who the frontrunner to take on Tom Buchanan is now, but apparently Lurhmann is looking to add some more Australian names to his cast to help with production costs. Trailer for TERRI Starring John C. Reilly and Jacob Wysocki
by Matt Goldberg Posted: April 19th, 2011
The trailer for the indie comedy Terri has gone online. The film is a coming-of-age tale about an overweight and unpopular teen who dresses in pajamas but strikes up an unlikely friendship with his school’s vice principal (John C. Reilly). Terri played at this year’s Sundance Film Festival as well as SXSW and the reaction was positive but unenthusiastic. The general consensus seems to be that it’s enjoyable but slight and after seeing the trailer, I can understand that criticism. However, I’m a big enough fan of Reilly and co-star Creed Bratton (who is the secret weapon of NBC’s The Office) to check out the film when it plays as the opening night feature at this year’s Atlanta Film Festival.

International Trailer for BRIDESMAIDS
by Phil Brown Posted: April 19th, 2011
Anyone who enjoys watching girls behaving badly (no, not in that way) has a reason to rejoice on this fine afternoon because Universal has seen fit to release an international trailer for the upcoming Kristen Wiig romp Bridesmaids. Not much is revealed than hasn’t already been seen in the previous trailer, but a few extra chuckles are to be had in this AC/DC scored montage (in particular, Mad Men fans will enjoy a little taste of Jon Hamm sleaziness). The film has been getting some pretty positive buzz so far at preview screenings and SXSW and could be a modest early summer comedy hit provided that both the R-rated sex comedy crowd and the chick-flick crowd can join forces to support it. How much overlap exists between the two groups remains to be seen, but this is the movie to bring em; together if anything can.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film was directed by Freaks And Geeks creator Paul Feig and also features Wiig’s former SNL partner in crime Maya Rudolph, as well as Rose Byrne, Matt Lucas (Little Britain), Chris O’Dowd (The IT Crowd), and Melissa McCarthy (who frankly looks like she might steal the movie away from her co-stars). The film opens May 13th.

Tim Roth to Return to Directing with Adaptation of TURNING STONES; Wants Sam Rockwell to Star
by Matt Goldberg Posted: April 19th, 2011
Tim Roth is looking to get back in the directing game with an adaptation of Marc Parent’s non-fiction book, Turning Stones: My Days and Nights with Children at Risk. Roth, who was abused as a child, sees the film as a companion piece to his 1999 directorial debut, The War Zone. Parent was a struggling actor in his twenties who joined an experimental social work unit that called upon him to project children from abusive parents. His work sometime required him to at times break up households and even have parents arrested.

Roth tells THR, “He was an incredible social worker – he saved tons of children from horrible situations.” Roth wants Sam Rockwell to play Parent even though Rockwell is twice Parent’s age when he started the job. The film currently has no producer, but Roth is already planning to shoot the film in digital in order to keep costs low and take “real control of the atmosphere surrounding the children.” Hit the jump for a synopsis of Turning Stones.

Trailer for DOLPHIN TALE Starring Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, and Harry Connick Jr.

by Jason Barr    Posted: April 7th, 2011

A trailer for director Charles Martin Smith’s Dolphin Tale has landed online. Starring Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Harry Connick Jr., and Kris Kristofferson, the film tells the story of a dolphin, Winter, who loses most of her tail to a crab trap and is aided in her recovery by the combined efforts of a doctor (Freeman) who builds a prosthetic tail and a family (Judd, Connick, etc.) who perhaps wills her to survive. While unremarkable, the trailer does a nice job of painting the film in the inspirational light it is meant to be cast. Of course, the “from the studio and producers of The Blind Side” reminder doesn’t hurt in aiding that end either.

Ben Affleck in Talks to Join Baz Lurhman’s THE GREAT GATSBY

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 7th, 2011

While director Baz Lurhman is busy fine-tuning his adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby for the big screen, it looks like he may have added another star to the cast. Ben Affleck is currently in talks to join Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire in the film. Deadline reports that Affleck is mulling over the role of Tom Buchanan, husband of Daisy who will be played by Mulligan. DiCaprio is set as Gatsby himself and Maguire will take on narrator Nick Carraway.
Affleck isn’t a sure thing, as he’s currently prepping his next directorial outing Argo, about the 1979 hostage crisis in Iran. However, Deadline seems to think that Affleck will find the time in his schedule to fit Gatsby in. The adaptation is set to start shooting in Australia in August. Hit the jump for a recap of what we know about the film so far, as well as my thoughts on Affleck’s casting. ............ http://collider.com/ben-affleck-the-great-gatsby/85006/

Fox Searchlight Launches THE TREE OF LIFE Site with 20 Mini-Clips

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: April 7th, 2011

Fox Searchlight has launched a comprehensive, interactive website for The Tree of Life at the domain twowaysthroughlife. Once you enter, you are greeted by hypnotic music and two options: “the father’s way” or “the mother’s way.”  Each path offers ten different clips, none much longer than five seconds and mostly free of dialogue.  I still can’t tell you much about the big picture of Terrence Malick’s film, but the site provides more of the ethereal imagery that I’ve been fawning over since the debut of the trailer.
Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and Jessica Chastain star in this “impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950s.”  Click here to head down the rabbit hole.  Read the official synopsis for The Tree of Life after the break. ........... http://collider.com/the-tree-of-life-movie-site/85016/

**Bradley Cooper Wants The Great Gatsby **Over 70 New Images from Terrence Malick’s THE TREE OF LIFE Starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn **Marisa Tomei and Sarah Jessica Parker in Talks to Star in MARRIED AND CHEATING **Michelle Rodriguez in Talks for "The Home" Horror Thriller

Bradley Cooper Wants The Great Gatsby

Bradley Cooper wants to play one of the title characters in Baz Luhrmann's upcoming The Great Gatsby adaptation: Jay Gatsby's rival Tom Buchanan.

"To me, he's the best character in the book. He's so complicated," Bradley Cooper said. "He's xenophobic, he's an alcoholic, but he also understands some profound stuff about class. Whoever plays it has to take a gentle hand, because it could so easily be stock, where he's a rich jerk you don't identify with at all."

"I don't even know if I'm on Baz Luhrmann's radar," he said. "Maybe he'll read this article after the role's cast and say, 'Oh. Ha. Yeah, that guy was never going to get it.' "

But director Baz Luhrmann recently said that on The Great Gatsby won't be happening anytime soon.

The adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Long Island-set novel, where Midwesterner Nick Carraway is lured into the lavish world of his neighbor, Jay Gatsby. Soon enough, however, Carraway will see through the cracks of Gatsby's nouveau riche existence, where obsession, madness, and tragedy await.

The Great Gatsby comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Carey Mulligan, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire. The film is directed by Baz Luhrmann.

Marisa Tomei and Sarah Jessica Parker in Talks to Star in MARRIED AND CHEATING

by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 13th, 2011

Marisa Tomei and Sarah Jessica Parker may join the indie comedy Married and Cheating. Written and directed by Raymond De Felitta (City Island), the film is set in New York and Paris and “concerns three married couples struggling to find happiness.” Groundswell and Lauren Versel of Lucky Monkey Pictures are producing. A spokesperson for Groundswell tells Variety that no deals are done because the project is still gathering financing.

Parker is attached to the comedies I Don’t Know How She Does It and the Valentine’s Day pseudo-sequel New Year’s Eve. As for Tomei, she’ll be constant presence in theaters throughout 2011. On Friday she’ll be seen in The Lincoln Lawyer, she co-stars in the upcoming comedies Salvation Boulevard and Crazy, Stupid, Love, and she’s currently filming on George Clooney’s political drama The Ides of March, which is due out October 14th.

Marisa Tomei And Sarah Jessica Parker Circling Married And Cheating published: 2011-03-12 15:52:17 Author: Mack Rawden

If I told you a sports movie was coming out and gave you no other information, what would you guess might be the vague construction of its plot? New coach comes aboard to impart winning attitude on hapless team. What about a horror movie? Psychopath terrorizes group of friends, mowing them down one by one. What about an independent film? That one’s a little harder, but I bet if I gave you three guesses one of them would involve philandering spouses. These story arcs might seem repetitive, to a degree they certainly are, but they exist because they’re proven winners. In the end, it doesn’t matter if the territory has been covered before, as long as the film has something new to say about it. Let’s hope that’s the case with Raymond de Felitta’s newest.

According to Variety, it’s aptly titled Married And Cheating, and it follows three couples as they navigate the ups and downs of their lives and deal with the ramifications of their decisions. The always reliable Marisa Tomei is negotiating to star alongside Sarah Jessica Parker, provided the financing comes together. These deals are always a bit dicey as you can’t sign anyone until the money’s done, but you can’t get money until people are signed. As a result, most of the time people verbally commit, checks are signed and then it all gets formalized.

I can’t help but be reminded of the underseen Your Friends And Neighbors. The Ben Stiller relationships indie never really caught on with viewers, but if Married And Cheating proves to be half as brilliant, we’ll all be in for something special.

Michelle Rodriguez in Talks for "The Home" Horror Thriller

Posted: March 14th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

IndieWire had the chance to speak to Michelle Rodriguez who revealed that she will is in talks to star in "The Home" horror film, which is set to be directed by Kristoffer Aaron Morgan.

"More likely than not I'll be doing that this summer over there, they're getting production set up now," she said. Shooting will take place in Texas and co-star Brian Cox, Cloris Leachman, Louis Gossett Jr, and Ed Asner.

Plot: A young man is nearly killed during a horrible accident that leaves him physically and emotionally scarred. To recuperate, he is taken to a secluded nursing home where the elderly residents appear to be suffering from delusions. But after witnessing a violent attack, he soon realizes that the screams behind the walls are caused by more than hallucinations and the residents are being preyed upon by twisted, monstrous nightmares that lurk within the home itself.

Michelle Rodriguez Probably In For Robert Rodriguez Horror Flick The Home

published: 2011-03-13 13:47:32 Author: Mack Rawden

The horror game is typically fodder for the younger generations and as such, usually stars teenagers or twenty-somethings. Not The Home. The Robert Rodriguez produced thriller is set in a rehab community troubled by numerous reports from elderly patients of things going bump in the night. At first the happenings are pawned off as dementia side effects, but after an injured firefighter moves in, the claims are taken a lot more seriously. Rumors have everyone from Brian Cox to Cloris Leachman to Ed Asner on board, but we finally have some sort of confirmation from Michelle Rodriguez of all people. She'll probably be in it.

According to Indie Wire, the Avatar actress revealed it's “more likely than not”. Take that wishy-washy commitment for what you will as she didn't even reveal what character she may play. With or without her, The Home plans to head into production this summer from a script penned by movie blogger Eric Vespe.

I will definitely see this film, but I'm still skeptical. The old people run amuck genre has produced a lot of great films, but it's also unleashed many more ultimately unsatisfying and borderline exploitative failures. For a movie with old people to work, they need to be treated like human beings. Being asked to laugh at them is annoying and cringe worthy, but laughing with them about their troubles is another matter entirely. I'm on board to see them battle the undead, not to giggle just because one of them said something overtly sexual or obscene.

Jennifer Lawrence Lands THE HUNGER GAMES
by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub Posted: March 11th, 2011 at 8:57 pm

To say that director Gary Ross’ (Pleasantville) adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games is being followed closely by fans is a bit of an understatement. Absolutely pivotal to the success of the film adaptation is the casting of the series’ lead role of Katniss. When describing what they were looking for in actresses for the role, Ross previously stated that what makes the character attractive is her strength, assuredness, defiance “and ultimately her compassion.”

The powers that be are currently searching for the right actress, and it looks like Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) has landed the role after a lengthy search that included Hailee Steinfeld and Abigail Breslin. According to Variety, Lionsgate is getting ready to make Lawrence an offer next week. Age appears to have been a deciding factor, as Ross and Lionsgate decided that casting a recognizable male lead in his 20s would be easier than trying to find a teenager to star opposite Steinfeld or Breslin. Is Jennifer Lawrence Now The Frontrunner For The Hunger Games?
published: 2011-03-11 20:54:32 Author: Eric Eisenberg
In the past few weeks few things in the movie world have befuddled me more than the casting for Gary Ross' The Hunger Games. Since the hunt for an actress to play Katniss Everdeen began, many names have been floated, including the likes of True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld and Abigail Breslin. One name that has gotten a lot of press, however, has been Jennifer Lawrence, who is coming off an Oscar nominated performance in Winter's Bone. Why is this weird? Lawrence is a 20-year-old blonde Caucasian while Katniss is 16 and is described as having dark hair and an olive complexion. What's only going to make this weirder? Lawrence is apparently the frontrunner.

Variety is reporting that Lionsgate is close to sending Lawrence an offer for the lead role in the Suzanne Collins adaptation. (Deadline is reporting a similar story, though when they reached out to Lawrence's representation and Lionsgate neither would confirm the story). The movie is set in the future where teenagers are selected from one of twelve districts to be put in an arena and fight to the death. Billy Ray (Volcano, Flightplan) wrote the script.

I haven't read the books so I really don't have a dog in this race, but considering how drastically different Lawrence is from the character, even with her considerable talent, I can't imagine that fans would be too pleased - but then again that may just be me talking out of my ass. What do you think? Do you want Katniss to be played by Jennifer Lawrence?

Baz Luhrmann Says He's Not Doing Great Gatsby Right Now, Comments On 3D And Australia
published: 2011-03-11 18:25:51 Author: Eric Eisenberg
When I found out that Baz Luhrmann would be directing an adaptation of The Great Gatsby, one of the greatest books of all time, I was actually happy. The book has never been given a proper film and with a cast that included Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire, Luhrman seemed on pace to do just that. Then he announced that he would be making the movie in 3D and filming it not on Long Island but, rather, in his native Australia. Naturally, as a fan of the book for many years, I was disgusted by this prospect. Luckily it may all not be true.

Vulture recently caught up with the Moulin Rouge director who, while being insanely coy about the whole thing, said that he's actually delayed the production because of the massive amount of speculation and lack of facts floating around about the project. When asked directly about why he would make the movie in Australia, he responded, "Despite what might be out there, I have made no comment about anything. So until I say it, it's not said." When asked about whether the film would actually be in 3D, he seemed to take a step back from it, while also feeding the same line, saying "I'm in the middle of my own foolish-to-be-talking-about-anything-in-any-regard stage, before you truly have something to express." Going further, Luhrman said that he's still focusing on absorbing the material, "the DNA of his world, his life, [and] the world of the novel."

Like I said: coy. Outside of saying that the production isn't going to be happening any time soon, he didn't really confirm or deny anything, just commenting on the fact that there is plenty of talk in the air about the project. Is it still possible that he plans on making a 3D, Australian-filmed version of The Great Gatsby? Absolutely. But he also might not be.

Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass and Jake Johnson Set for SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 11th, 2011 at 6:21 pm

A trio of actors are set to star in the indie comedy Safety Not Guaranteed. Aubrey Plaza (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), Mark Duplass (Humpday) and Jake Johnson (No Strings Attached) will star in the flick written and directed by Colin Trevorrow. The film was spawned from a real-life classified ad taken out by a man who was very seriously seeking a time travel companion who must bring their own weapons. The ad closes with “safety not guaranteed” and earned its own Internet meme. Johnson recently spoke with The Playlist about the film:

“It’s the story of my character who is a writer for a magazine in Seattle that decides go….and get an interview with this guy and make fun of him a little bit. And I bring one of my interns, who’s Aubrey, and it’s kind of her story, meeting this guy and this guy’s effect on us and it turns into its own little world. And Mark plays the guy the guy from the classified ad.”

Plaza is the gift that keeps on giving each week on Parks and Recreation and Duplass has become somewhat of an indie A-lister after writing, producing, directing and starring in a number of indie gems. He and his brother Jay will produce Safety Not Guaranteed. The cast sounds terrific, and the plot described has a great deal of potential. I’m quite interested to see how this one turns out.

Two-Face May Return in "The Dark Knight Rises"?
Posted: March 11th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Aaron Eckhart has been saying that he will not return as Harvey Dent/Two-Face in "The Dark Knight Rises," but now during an interview with CBS, the actor is hinting that there might be a role for him in the movie after all.

CBS asked: "Just to be clear, we're not going to see Harvey Dent ever again, not in a flashback, someone's imagination. You're not returning to that role, right?"

Eckhart responded coyly: "I'm not?" When pressed further, the actor added: "I could not possibly say."

It's possible that Eckhart is tired of answering that question and is just playing around, but it's also possible that Christopher Nolan may want him back. Watch the video below and judge for yourself.

Dakota Fanning Signs On For Diamond Heist Movie Mississippi Wild

published: 2011-02-21 15:31:52 Author: Katey Rich
Dakota Fanning, who has been named Homecoming Queen twice at her Los Angeles high school and may well be getting ready to work on college applications, still can't seem to stay busy enough. The almost-17-year-old has signed on to two new projects, according to Variety she'll first film Motel Life, alongside Emile Hirsch and her sister's Somewhere co-star Stephen Dorff, then move on to Mississippi Wild, a heist film in which she and Ryan Donowho play two teens on the run after stealing diamonds from a gangster.

There's no plot description given for Motel Life, but really, how can you beat that Mississippi Wild plot description. Actually it gets even better-- Mickey Rourke is being considered to play the gangster, while Forest Whitaker is on board to play another gangster who, for some reason, is chasing Rourke's character. The film is written and directed by Jesse Baget, whose first film El Mascarado Massacre was released in 2006.

It's maybe not a great sign that the last time Dakota Fanning and Forest Whitaker worked together it was on the tiny indie Fragments (also known as Winged Creatures), which virtually nobody saw and apparently no one really liked. But come on, how can they go wrong on a second go round, especially with a plot that sounds as nutty and Wild At Heart-esque as this one? I'm sticking with that optimism until given evidence otherwise.

Baz Luhrmann's Great Gatsby Starts Shooting In Australia In March

published: 2011-02-21 08:12:45 Author: Katey Rich
After some false alarms and what seemed like an endless processing of casting and rehearsals, Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby is finally going to start shooting, and sooner than I expected. According to The New Zealand Herald, filming will start in March in Sydney, Australia, going for 17 weeks and lasting for an incredible 30 weeks of post-production, all taking place in Australia. Yes, a small-scale drama set on New York's Long Island has now become a massive effort shooting in Australia and employing 150 people to work on post-production and visual effects alone. An it's being made by the man whose last film, Australia, cost a fortune and made virtually no money. Baz Luhrmann, bless him, is a man for whom the word "small" has no meaning.

The film will also be shot in 3D, marking the first time stars Leonardo DiCaprio (as Gatsby), Tobey Maguire (Nick Carraway) and Carey Mulligan (Daisy) have ever worked in the format. It is, in other words, absolutely not going to be the Gatsby you read in high school, though what it will be seems totally unclear. At this point, with Luhrmann clearly running off on his own tangent about what he wants the movie to be, I'm kind of excited to see how wild his vision will be. F. Scott Fitzgerald's book, beloved and studied by generations of English students, is what it is, and Luhrmann's film is clearly going to be something newer, wilder, and different. Sure, it may be a disaster, but it'll be original-- or as original as an adaptation can be, I guess.

Robots Hit The Streets In New Transformers: Dark Of The Moon TV Spot

published: 2011-02-21 07:23:41 Author: Katey Rich
Coming just two weeks after the big Super Bowl spot, the new TV ad for Transformers: Dark of the Moon that aired during the Daytona 500 last night didn't reveal a whole lot of new footage. And yet, somehow, it seemed just as impressive, the new shots giving a better sense of how the robots take to the streets of Chicago this time around, and the voiceover from John Turturro's character-- "Years from now they're gonna ask us, where were you when they took over the planet"-- giving an appropriately epic feel. And that shot of Bumblebee transforming on a serene seaside road? Not bad at all. Take a look below.
...
Of course, I couldn't help but also notice that Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the former Victoria's Secret model replacing Megan Fox as the love interest, has her mouth wide open in all three shots she appears in, looking more like a flesh-and-blood blow-up doll than an actual human. But her glassy eyed affect will be probably be balanced by Shia LaBeouf, who for better or for worse seems very at home chasing down giant robots and dodging fireballs.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon opens July 1, and will likely feel interminable and silly when not chopped up until 30-second TV spots. Enjoy this part while it lasts!

THE GREAT GATSBY Will Shoot in 3D This August With Leonardo DiCaprio and Possibly Carey Mulligan

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 19th, 2011

Baz Luhrmann has taken his time to figure out what he wants to do with this Great Gatsby adaptation.  He bought the rights to the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel in 2008.  Luhrmann began to workshop the project with a number of A-listers late last year.  He mulled long and hard over all of Hollywood’s prettiest starlets for the role of Daisy, and wondered if Daisy might look more fetching in 3D.  Throughout the process, Lurhmann never officially decided The Great Gatsby is his next project, saying at the DGA Awards, “I gotta make a decision in three days’ time.”
A fortnight (and then some) has passed since that statement, and THR has the verdict.  Luhrmann will film The Great Gatsby in 3D this August in his hometown Syndey Australia.  Leonardo DiCaprio will play Jay Gatsby, and Carey Mulligan has been offered the role of Daisy Buchanan.  Details after the break.
