Ed Westwick to Play Tybalt in ROMEO AND JULIET
by Adam Chitwood Posted: May 23rd, 2011 at 3:26 pm

Because it’s been almost 15 years since Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo + Juliet, and Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes are all old now, it’s apparently time to make a new version of William Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy. Hailee Steinfeld is set to star as Juliet in the adaptation, set to be directed by Italian filmmaker Carlo Carlie (Flight of the Innocent). Now, Variety reports that Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick is in final negotiations to star as Tybalt in the indie. Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) wrote the screenplay and Holly Hunter recently joined the cast as The Nurse. The role of Romeo has yet to be cast. Production is set to begin this summer in Italy.

Sony Picks up Re-Imagining of THE LITTLE MERMAID for COUNTRY STRONG Filmmaker Shana Feste
by Matt Goldberg Posted: May 23rd, 2011 at 2:03 pm

Would you like to see another fairy tale re-imagining? Your answer is moot because you’re getting more re-imaginings whether you want them or not. Heat Vision reports that that Sony has picked up a re-imagining of Hans Christen Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, Carolyn Turgeon’s novel Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale (although “A Twist on a Classic Tale” could be applied to every single re-imagining that’s out there). Filmmaker Shana Feste (Country Strong) will adapt the story, which “centers on a princess who, in order to save her ravaged kingdom, sets out on a dangerous journey to marry the prince of her rival kingdom, not knowing that a beautiful mermaid has fallen for the same man and has sacrificed everything to be with him.” Aaaaawkwaaaard…

While the film is being billed as a “dark re-imagining” of Andersen’s tale, the original Little Mermaid was already incredibly dark. In the original tale, the mermaid sacrifices everything to be with the prince, he marries someone else anyway, and she kills herself. If she had a singing Caribbean crab as her friend, maybe that wouldn’t have happened. Hit the jump for the synopsis of Turgeon’s novel.

First Trailer for Showtime’s New Drama Series HOMELAND Starring Claire Danes

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: May 23rd, 2011 at 12:20 pm

homeland-slice-showtime-Claire Danes
Last night The Borgias finished off their first season (and just got picked up for a second season as well), and viewers who tuned in also got a sneak peek at Showtime’s new thriller Homeland.  Starring Clarie Danes, Damian Lewis and Mandy Patinkin, the series follows a taut psychological thriller about a volatile CIA officer (Danes) who becomes convinced that a recently rescued American POW (Lewis) may be connected to an al Qaeda plot to be carried out on U.S. soil. I’m not convinced it looks quite as thrilling as a series like 24, but it looks like it has potential even without Kiefer Sutherland ripping throats. See for yourself by checking out the trailer after the jump. http://collider.com/homeland-trailer-claire-danes/92419/

Trailer for TAKE SHELTER Starring Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 23rd, 2011 at 11:53 am

take-shelter-image-michael-shannon-slice-01
The trailer for Jeff Nichols’ intense psychological drama Take Shelter has gone online.  I caught the film at Sundance and while I thought it could stand to lose a good twenty minutes to keep up the pacing and maintain the dread it creates in the first act, but the core of the story is fantastic and the performances are solid.  The trailer tries to play up the psychological aspect of the story and that’s kind of necessary because after the recent spate of devastating tornados, most folks aren’t going to think that building a storm shelter is a crazy idea.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film stars Michael Shannon, Jessica Chastain, Shea Whigham, Katy Mixon, and Kathy Baker.  Take Shelter opens October 7th. http://collider.com/take-shelter-trailer/92396/

First Trailer for THE MUPPETS plus Poster for Fake Movie GREEN WITH ENVY

by Collider Staff    Posted: May 23rd, 2011 at 11:37 am

The first trailer for The Muppets has gone online.  It takes a little while to get to the actual Muppets, but stick through the trailer for the first 50 seconds and you’ll get there.  This is really more of an announcement trailer, and I’m not sure what will set this Muppets movie apart, but creating a trailer that basically goes “Surprise!  Muppets!” isn’t a bad way to start.  I’m slightly confused by the set-up of a fake Jason Segel/Amy Adams romance flick called Green with Envy, but I’ll go with it for now.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer for The Muppets and the poster for Green with EnvyThe Muppets also stars Chris Cooper, Rashida Jones, and a slew of celebrity cameos.  The film opens November 23rd. http://collider.com/the-muppets-movie-trailer/89827/

Benedict Cumberbatch Joins THE HOBBIT

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 23rd, 2011 at 9:45 am

If you watched the first season of BBC’s Sherlock, then you know that star Benedict Cumberbatch was a terrific modern interpretation of Sherlock Holmes that didn’t simply copy TV’s other modern-day Holmes, Hugh Laurie’s Dr. Gregory House.  Now he’s set to join his Sherlock Holmes co-star Martin Freeman in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit.  Freeman accidentally let the news slip to BBC Entertainment Reporter Lizo Mzimba [via TheOneRing], but I fully support any additional attention to Cumberbatch.  He’s definitely an actor worth taking note of and audiences will get to see more of him later this year not only in the second season of Sherlock, but also in Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Steven Spielberg’s War Horse.
The Hobbit is set to arrive in 3D in two parts.  Part 1 is slated to open December 2012 with Part 2 set to hit theaters in December 2013.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

Rumor: Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro to Reunite for THE COMEDIAN?

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 23rd, 2011 at 7:12 am

king-of-comedy-movie-image-robert-de-niro-slice-01
Let’s keep this one in the rumor mill for now, but it’s possible that Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro could reunite for The Comedian.  Showbiz411 reports that producer Art Linson co-wrote a script with comedian Jeffrey Ross about an insult comic who’s described as a cross between Don Rickles and Joan River.  According to Showbiz411, Linson would like Scorsese to direct.  I bet he would.  I bet producers the world over would like Scorsese to direct their movie as well.  If the project were to move forward (and that’s a big “If”), it would draw an obvious comparison to Scorsese and De Niro’s 1982 film The King of Comedy, even though the characters sound very different.
The reason this all sounds slightly dubious (or at least incredibly hopeful on the part of Linson) is that Scorsese has a wealth of other projects he could choose.  Hit the jump for a refresher of what Scorsese is circling as his follow up to this year’s Hugo Cabret, which is the director’s first family film and his first 3D film. http://collider.com/martin-scorsese-robert-de-niro-the-comedian/92309/

Teaser Poster for THE MUPPETS
by Kevin Panasiewicz Posted: May 14th, 2011 at 10:38 am

The first teaser poster for Disney’s The Muppets has popped up online, albeit as a blurry and off-center snapshot taken by a fan in Montreal, but that’s better than nothing right? It features the classic characters Gonzo (my personal favorite), Fozzie Bear, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and Animal walking out onto what appears to be a stage aglow with spotlights. It’s awesome to have the Muppet gang back, but this picture creeps me out. THEY’RE WALKING, as in with legs — it’s too much too soon. Hit the jump to see what the Muppets look like in all their anatomically correct glory.

Julie Andrews, Gemma Arterton, Matthew Goode, and Gabriel Byrne to Star in Agatha Christe Adaptation CROOKED HOUSE; Neil LaBute Will Direct
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: May 14th, 2011 at 10:29 am

Julie Andrews, Gemma Arterton, Matthew Goode, and Gabriel Byrne have signed on to star in an adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel Crooked House. In the murder mystery is set against “the backdrop of three generations of a family that lives together in a large and seemingly crooked house.” Every member of the eccentric family has motive to have killed the multimillionaire patriarch, Aristide Leonide. Neil LaBute (Death at a Funeral) will direct from a script by Julian Fellowes (The Tourist) and Tim Rose Price (The Serpent’s Kiss). The $20 million production is scheduled to shoot this summer in the U.K. The story calls for a large ensemble, so expect more casting notices in the near future. Andrews, Goode, and Byrne — and sure, let’s throw in the lovely Arterton — is a very good start.

Yvonne Strahovski Joins Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand in MY MOTHER’S CURSE
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: May 14th, 2011 at 9:55 am

Paramount has signed Chuck star Yvonne Strahovski to star opposite Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand in My Mother’s Curse. The story revolves around “an inventor (Rogen) who invites his mother (Streisand) on a cross-country trip as he tries to sell his new product while also reuniting her with a lost love.” According to THR, Strahovski will play the high school sweetheart that Rogen’s character once proposed to. Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) will direct from a script by Dan Fogelman (Tangled), based on his own experience traveling with Mrs. Fogelman.

NBC just renewed Chuck for a fifth and final season. If there is any justice, the careers of Strahovski and Zachary Levi will be sufficiently launched by the end of the series. The Aussie actress will make her Hollywood feature debut opposite Jason Statham, Robert De Niro, and Clive Owen in The Killer Elite.

New Official Images from THE MUPPET MOVIE and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4: ON STRANGER TIDES

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: January 19th, 2011

Disney has released new images from both The Muppet Movie and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. While it’s taken Walt Disney a number of years to get a new Muppet movie off the ground, every official image they release and every leaked photo from the set is getting me more excited to see Kermit, Miss Piggy, and the rest of the gang back on movie screens.  I really think The Muppets is going to be a huge hit for the studio.  I know I can’t wait to see it.  Hit the jump for the new images:
The Muppets are scheduled for release on November 23, 2011 and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides hits theaters May 20, 2011.
Thanks to Stitch Kingdom for the new images.  You can check out a number of other images from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides here
Here’s the synopsis for The Muppets:
On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary (Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams) from Smalltown, USA, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets’ former stomping grounds. To stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theater, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie now performs with a Reno casino house band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate.
Here’s the synopsis:
Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” captures the fun, adventure and humor that ignited the hit franchise—this time in Disney Digital 3D™. Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise.  When Jack crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), he’s not sure if it’s love—or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more:  Blackbeard or the woman from his past
The international cast includes franchise vets Geoffrey Rush as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa, and Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack’s longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs, plus Sam Claflin as a stalwart missionary and Astrid Berges-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid.

New Set Photos and Unofficial Video from the SPIDER-MAN Reboot

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 19th, 2011

Yesterday, we showed you a blurry photo of Spider-Man running down the street.  Not surprisingly, there was more than one bystander taking photos and shooting video of the wall-crawler not crawling walls.  Citizen reporters managed to catch Spidey doing some pretty sweet stunt work.  It looks like this scene in the movie comes when Spider-Man has his powers, but hasn’t built his web-shooters.  Clearly, having to run from the cops (or perhaps chase the bad guy that shot Uncle Ben, presuming they haven’t changed Spidey’s comic-book origin) isn’t as effective (or fun) as swinging between buildings.
Hit the jump to check out the new set photos as well as handheld video of the filming.  Marc Webb’s untitled 3D Spider-Man reboot is set for release on July 3, 2012.

Anne Hathaway Cast as Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES; Tom Hardy to Play Bane

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 19th, 2011

Here are two major pieces of The Dark Knight Rises news that you can take to the Gotham City bank.  First up, Warner Bros’ has announced that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle.  Kyle’s alter-ego is Catwoman, but the press release doesn’t mention the character.  They only refer to Hathaway’s role as “Selina Kyle”.
The other major piece of news from the press release is that Tom Hardy will be playing the Batman villain Bane.  It was previously rumored that Hardy would be playing villainous psychologist Dr. Hugo Strange.  Personally, I think Strange is a more interesting character than Bane, whose claim to fame is that he broke Batman’s back in the comics.  Hit the jump to check out the press release.  The Dark Knight Rises is due out July 20th.
As we previously reported, The Dark Knight Rises is rumored to have two leading female characters.  One was to be a villain and the other was to be a love interest.  The character Talia al Ghul was rumored to be in the movie and presumed to be the villain since she’s the daughter of the villain from Batman Begins, Ra’s al Ghul.  However, the inclusion of Kyle complicates matters.  Catwoman/Selina Kyle works perfectly as both a love interest AND a villain.  However, if she doesn’t become Catwoman in the movie, then presumably she stays as the “love interest” and not the villain.  But it would be bizarre to try and hold Catwoman for a fourth movie when Nolan has said that he plans to make The Dark Knight Rises his final Batman movie.
As for Bane, I’m surprised a character that super-natural and comic-book-y has made it into Nolan’s grounded-in-reality Gotham City.  For those unfamiliar with the character, Bane is hooked up to a chemical known as “Venom” that causes his body to become super-muscular when injected.  He also wears (in the comics) a Mexican wrestling mask.  Of course, the press release states that this will be a “new interpretation” of Bane.
Here’s the press release:
BURBANK, CA, January 19, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.
Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”
In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”
Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.
“The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

How do I say this? I think it was the ugliest haircut I’ve ever seen. What I really want to know is, how did that thing have legs? Let’s just say I’m not a fan of short, layered cuts on my personally, so I don’t love revisiting that particular era.”
On changing things up for her most recent films: “I didn’t wear mascara in Just Go With It. It’s fun to transform a little bit — what did I have to lose? I was ready to be silly and go with a full-out comedy, and it was the first time I felt truly sure about what I was walking into. Because with the last couple of movies, I wasn’t completely sure, and I should have probably trusted my gut. For whatever reason, they all happen the way they’re supposed to.”
On not taking herself seriously: “I’m actually comfortable in goofdom. Not taking myself seriously is one of my favorite things to do, because I don’t. Ever.”

While I debated posting the clips, I figured Camilla Belle and Alexa Vega fans might like to see them.  If interested, hit the jump.  I’ve also posted a more detailed synopsis:

Today we have a new image plus a definitely-NSFW clip from the upcoming Nicolas Cage action flick Drive Angry 3D.  The image is SFW unless your workplace doesn’t allow you to look at images of Amber Heard smiling at a bloodied-up Nicolas Cage.  However, unless you work in a very lax environment, your bosses and co-workers will probably frown on you seeing a clip of Nicolas Cage having sex with a naked chick (even though he’s fully clothed) while he has a gunfight with folks coming to kill him.  Watch the clip when you get home because it makes the movie look like a pile of trashy fun.
Hit the jump to check out image and the NSFW clip.  Drive Angry 3D opens February 25th.

Alexander Payne to Direct NEBRASKA

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 18th, 2011

Sideways director Alexander Payne Payne recently finished up with The Descendants starring George Clooney and is now turning his attention to the drama Nebraska.  According to The Playlist, the story centers on,
“an aging alcoholic father who thinks he’s won a million dollar Publisher’s Clearing House sweepstakes prize. He is unbowed when his family tries to dissaude him from making the long trip from Montana to Nebraska to cash in his winnings. So his estranged 20-something son—who doesn’t believe the ticket is a winner—is forced to go along with him for the ride to keep him out of trouble, providing an opportunity to bond with his father after years of separation.”
Hit the jump for more details NebraskaThe Descendants is due to be released later this year.

Noah Baumbach Recruits Ben Stiller, James Franco, Greta Gerwig, Cate Blanchett for WHILE WE’RE YOUNG

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 1st, 2010
Writer/director Noah Baumbach is prepping his next film, While We’re Young, and as usual, he’s culling an excellent cast.  Ben Stiller and James Franco are attached to star, with offers out to Greta Gerwig and Cate Blanchett.  Franco is the only newbie to the land of Baumbach.  Stiller and Gerwig assumed the lead roles in his last film, Greenberg; Blanchett acted in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, the script of which Baumbach co-wrote.
Vulture indicates the story centers on “a free-spirited Brooklynite twenty-something couple (Franco and Gerwig) who inspires an uptight documentarian (Stiller) and his wife (Blanchett) to loosen up — with comedic consequences.”  More after the jump.
It’s rumored that the role earmarked for Blanchett was originally intended for Jennifer Jason Leigh.  Unfortunately, the actress filed for divorce from Mr. Baumbach last week.  So… nope.
Baumbach also has The Emperor’s Children (but not Mr. Popper’s Penguins) in the pipeline.  It appears While We’re Young is first in line, but either way, I believe we’ll have a Baumbach-directed film in 2011.  Plus, he’s producing Peter Bogdanovich’s Squirrel to the Nuts and is somewhat ridiculously credited on the screenplay for Brett Ratner’s Tower Heist.  Should be a good year for Baumbach fans.
These actors are all very good, and so in high demand, with upwards of a dozen projects between them.  I’ll recap each as soullessly: in bullet form.

BEN STILLER
JAMES FRANCO
GRETA GERWIG
CATE BLANCHETT

Ricky Gervais, Emily Blunt and Mickey Rooney Join THE MUPPETS; Plus New Images from Set

by Jake Horowitz    Posted: December 1st, 2010

Would anyone following Jason Segel’s The Muppets be remotely surprised if it was announced that more people have joined the cast? Today, two more names have been added to the incredibly large list of high-profile celebrities appearing in the film. Also, along with the casting news comes a bunch of new photos from the set. Ricky Gervais and Emily Blunt are the newest additions to the movie, with their roles being kept a secret. Hit the jump to see who they will be joining in this movie of which I have run out of adjectives to describe; as well as the images. Gervais and Blunt will be joining Zach Galifianakis, Jack Black, Donald Glover, Danny Trejo, Eric Stonestreet, John Krasinski, Ed Helms, Lady Gaga, Paul Rudd, Alan Arkin, Billy Crystal, and Jean-Claude Van Damme in cameo roles.  Who else can you ask for, especially considering there’s not that many people left in Hollywood to be cast? Alright, to be fair, I guess you could ask for Mickey Rooney, but according to a new photo appearing on the Facebook profile of Rooney’s stepson (weird, right?), he’ll have something to do with the film as well. Honestly, at this point anyone can join the cast and it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest. It’s been said, and said again, and said another time, why this movie could be great, so this time I’ll just let the casting news speak for itself and let you make up your own mind. The film was written by Segel and Forgetting Sarah Marshall director, Nicholas Stoller, and is directed by James Bobin (Flight of The Conchords). It is currently filming around Los Angeles with its main stars, Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, and Rashida Jones.  It is to be released December 25, 2011. Images via BleedingCool:

James Franco Goes 'Outside' for '127 Hours'

James Franco Goes 'Outside' for '127 Hours'
James Franco takes the cover of Outside’s December issue.
Here’s what the 32-year-old had to share with the mag about his movie 127 Hours:
On shooting a scene where he tried to move a boulder: “[Director] Danny [Boyle] said, “I’m just gonna roll the camera. Keep going, and don’t stop, and try to get out of it. You won’t get out, but keep trying.’ I knew I was going to get beat up, and I said, “OK, I’m happy to do it, but make sure you get it on camera so I don’t have to do it again.’”
On how his body handled the scenes: “I was purple all over. But when you keep it going that long, you get pulled into a scene in a much different way, in which you’re really just doing something to try and accomplish it.”
On how real-life mountain climber Aron Ralston (whom James plays in the film) described the pain of having to amputate his own arm: “He said it felt like his arm had been thrust into lava, that it was incinerated.”

Cate Blanchett: Sydney Theatre Company Solar Switch-On!

Cate Blanchett: Sydney Theatre Company Solar Switch-On!
Cate Blanchett and husband Andrew Upton flick a fake switch celebrating the Sydney Theatre Company’s rooftop solar panels on Friday (November 26) in Sydney, Australia.
The couple, who are the STC’s artistic directors, said powering the company’s building with the sun was about bringing it into the 21st century.
“If theatre doesn’t engage with the big issues that face human beings and society generally, then it very quickly becomes irrelevant,” Cate said at the ceremony.
The new rooftop solar power system will reportedly produce up to 70 percent of the company’s power supply, which is enough energy to power 46 average homes!
