New Trailer for FINAL DESTINATION 5

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 7th, 2011

The new trailer for Final Destination 5 has gone online and as always, every thing can be boiled down to “Go to mundane location, bad things happen.”  The Final Destination franchise preys on our fears that we could die from a freak accident at any time.  I would love to see the Final Destination film where someone escapes the big accident at the beginning and then instead of the reaper getting him or her with a Rube Goldberg project of death, the person just dies from a long, protracted illness.  At least this one kind of raises an interesting moral quandary about whether or not you would kill an innocent person if it ensured your own survival.  And really, what would a Final Destination movie be without an arbitrary new rule that was never mentioned in the previous entries?
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Final Destination 5 opens in 3D on August 12th. http://collider.com/final-destination-5-trailer-2/100882/

Neil Burger to Write and Direct UNCHARTED: DRAKE’S FORTUNE

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: July 7th, 2011

Neil Burger (Limitless) has signed on to write and direct the adaptation of the video game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.  Burger replaces David O. Russell who left the project in May after Sony disagreed with O. Russell’s decision not to give fans exactly what they think they wanted (which, if it’s a straight adaptation of Drake’s Fortune, is just a video game they can’t play).  Variety reports that “producers Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Charles Roven and Alex Gartner sparked to [Burger's] new take on the pic.”

Marc Forster’s MACHINE GUN PREACHER Slated for September 23rd

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 7th, 2011

Relativity Media has picked up Marc Forster’s drama Machine Gun Preacher and will give the film a limited release on September 23rd.  The movie is based on the real-life story of Sam Childers (played by Gerard Butler), a former drug-dealer who eventually became a crusader for hundreds of refugee children in East Africa.  The film also stars Michelle Monaghan, Kathy Baker, and Michael Shannon.
Since it’s opening in limited release (most likely to build buzz for a possible awards run), it won’t really be competing against the movies opening in wide release, but here’s the list anyway: Abduction starring Taylor Lautner, the family film Dolphin Tale 3D, the action flick Killer Elite, and the sports drama Moneyball starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill.  Hit the jump for the press release from Relativity. http://collider.com/machine-gun-preacher-release-date/100875/

International Teaser Trailer for THE IRON LADY

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 7th, 2011

The international teaser trailer for the Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady has gone online.  Because Meryl Streep can be nominated for an Oscar for just about anything she does and because the Academy loves impersonations of historical figures within a dramatic context, I’d say Streep is looking pretty good for her 17th Oscar nomination (it also helps that she’s an incredible actress).  This is all a way to say that if The Iron Lady hits US theaters before the end of the year (and since it debuts in the UK in January 2012, it would probably be ready before year’s end), one of the Best Actress nominations will be taken.  Sorry, other actresses.
Hit the jump to check out teaser trailer.  The Iron Lady also stars Harry Lloyd, Jim Broadbent, Anthony Head, and Olivia Colman.

First Look at Nori, Ori, and Dori in Peter Jackson’s THE HOBBIT

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: July 7th, 2011

The first part of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit is a still over a year-and-a-half away, but Warner Bros. is showing no hesitation in letting fans get an early look at how the project is developing.  We’ve already seen the first images from the movie and now the studio have released a first look at dwarves Nori (Jed Brophy), Ori (Adam Brown), and Dori (Mark Hadlow).  Nori, Ori, and Dori are three of the thirteen dwarves that accompany Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) “who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.”  I like the design of the costumes and make-up.  It’s clear they’re trying to emphasize that not all dwarves look like Gimli.
Hit the jump to check out the image along with a brief bio on the brothers Nori, Ori, and Dori.  The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14, 2012.  The Hobbit: There and Back Again will hit theaters on December 13, 2013.  Both movies will be in 3D. http://collider.com/hobbit-movie-image-nori-ori-dori/100724/

Jason Statham is Older Sam Witwicky in "Transformers 4"?Posted: July 7th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staf

Michael Bay and Shia LaBeouf are not returning for any more "Transformers" installments, which is why it was recently reported that Paramount Pictures are considering Jason Statham as the lead in "Transformers 4," which may be a reboot of the franchise.

But producer Don Murphy says that "Transformers 4" won't be a reboot. Instead, it may be a the beginning of a new trilogy. "What happens next? Certainly not a reboot," he explained. "We haven't lost the Transformers. They didn't grow up or become expensive like Toby Maguire. I don't know what happens next. I'm pretty sure there will be a second trilogy."

If the plan is to continue the franchise, there is a good chance Statham may play an older Sam Witwicky, the character LaBeouf has been playing in the last three films.

Summer Glau Wields A Sword In New Knights Of Badassdom Still

published: 2011-07-07 18:29:22 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Thanks to the film's presence at this year's Comic Con there should be plenty of news surrounding Knights of Badassdom coming in the next few weeks, but for now we haven't gotten an update from the film in a few months. Back at the start of the year the movie's official Facebook page delivered two awesome stills of star Peter Dinklage, with one featuring True Blood star Ryan Kwanten. The cast, however, is much larger than just those two names, and today we have our first shot of Summer Glau on set.

Brandishing a sword and standing what looks somewhat like a medieval fair ground, the former Firefly and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles star delivers high levels on the badass meter, just as the title of the film would suggest. Also starring Danny Pudi, Steve Zahn, Jimmi Simpson, Margarita Levieva, Joshua Malina and Michael Gladis, the film is about a group of live-action role players (known to many as LARPers) who suddenly find themselves in real danger when they accidentally summon a demon.

Check out the image below.

Roland Emmerich’s SINGULARITY Winds up at Sony; Will Be Released May 2013 [Updated]

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 29th, 2011

Sony Pictures previously distributed Roland Emmerich’s 2012, they’re planning to release his new film Anonymous this fall, and now it’s looking like they’ll be working with him again.  Details on the film’s story are scant (as if there will be much story to begin with) but THR reports that Emmerich will be writing the script.  THR also says that the movie is untitled, but Deadline reports that the picture is called Singularity, a title that implies a sci-fi bent (a “singularity” is a term used in astrophysics to describe “A point in space-time at which gravitational forces cause matter to have infinite density and infinitesimal volume, and space and time to become infinitely distorted.”)
However, Singularity may not be Emmerich’s next film.  He’s also attached to direct an adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation trilogy as well as a movie based off the classic arcade game AsteroidsAnonymous, which is a historical thriller that presumes Shakespeare didn’t write his plays, is set to open on October 28th. [Update: Deadline confirms that Sony has picked up Singularity.  The studio plans to release it on May 17, 2013, which implies that this will be Emmerich's next flick.  The only other film currently set for that date is Ron Howard's adaptation of Steven King's The Dark Towerhttp://collider.com/roland-emmerichs-singularity-sony-pictures/99526/

Roger Avary to Pen Adaptation of William Faulkner’s Crime Novel SANCTUARY

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 29th, 2011

Cops producer John Langley has tapped Pulp Fiction co-writer Roger Avary to pen an adaptation of William Faulkner’s 1931 crime novel SanctuaryDeadline reports that Ali exec producer Lee Caplin will co-produce with Langley.  The book was adapted back in 1933 as The Story of Temple Drake, but the plot had to be readjusted to adhere to the Production Code, and there’s a lot to readjust.  The story involves rape, murder, abduction, and other brutal acts set against the backdrop of the American South during Prohibition.
Avary’s last produced screenplay was 2007′s Beowulf and his career was slightly way-laid when he pled guilty to a vehicular manslaughter charge in 2009 and while he was at first given a work furlough and five years probation, he was dumb enough to complain about it on Twitter and as a result was sent to jail to serve out the remainder of his sentence.  He was released last July.  Personal problems aside, Avary is an interesting screenwriter who has no trouble tapping into the ugliness of characters and their situations and he sounds like a perfect fit for this adaptation.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel. http://collider.com/roger-avary-william-faulkner-sanctuary/99506/

Warner Bros. Wants to Send David O. Russell and Brad Pitt on THE MISSION

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: June 29th, 2011

Killing Osama Bin Laden hasn’t just been great for America’s morale.  It’s also been great for Hollywood.  Columbia Pictures will distribute Kathryn Bigelow’s Kill Bin Laden next year, Relativity recently up picked up the Navy SEALs film Act of Valor and now Warner Bros. is getting in on the military-men-on-a-mission game with the appropriately titled The MissionDeadline reports that Warner Bros. is fast-tracking a film based on the real-life six-year mission between American and Columbian covert operatives to free 15 hostages from the Columbian jungle.  David O. Russell is reportedly circling the director’s chair and Brad Pitt is being courted to star.  The movie won’t focus on the hardships of the hostages but instead on “the numerous governments, diplomats and intelligence services and a vast network of spies, military advisers and soldiers plus high-tech surveillance measures.”
Hit the jump for more on O. Russell and Pitt’s current projects and likelihood of signing on for The Mission. http://collider.com/mission-david-o-russell-brad-pitt/99498/

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay SWEAR TO GOD

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 29th, 2011

Warner Bros. has picked up the buddy comedy Swear to God with Will Ferrell attached to star and Adam McKay set to produce and direct.  The script is from Due Date screenwriters Alan Cohen and Alan Freedland and Deadline reports that Ferrell will play “a narcissistic hedge fund manager who thinks he has seen God.”  If the project goes into production, it will be the fifth or sixth film directed by McKay that stars Ferrell.  However, it will be the first one McKay didn’t write (although I’d be surprised if he didn’t have input into the script).  Hit the jump to learn more about the Ferrell and McKay’s other projects. http://collider.com/will-ferrell-adam-mckay-swear-to-god/99493/

Two More Images from THE HOBBIT

hobbit-movie-image-martin-freeman-slice-01
Last week, we showed you the first official images from Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit.  Now two more images from the film have gone online.  The images provide another look at Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and Ian McKellan reprising his role as Gandalf the Grey.  Looking at all of these images, I’m curious to see if Jackson will retain the visual style he used for The Lord of the Rings trilogy or if he’ll modify it since the events of The Hobbit take place before LOTR.
Hit the jump to check out the new images.  The two-part film is currently shooting in New Zealand and also stars Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Andy Serkis, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, and Stephen Fry. Jean-Pierre Jenuet to Adapt THE SELECTED WORKS OF T.S. SPIVET and RED LEAVES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 29th, 2011

French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet hasn’t directed an English-language film since 1997′s Alien: Resurrection, but he may give it another shot by adapting Reif Larson’s debut novel The Selected Works of T.S. SpivetVariety reports that Jeunet plans to make Spivet his next movie and that he is currently writing the screenplay with his Amelie co-writer Guillaume Laurant.  Per Variety, Spivet “tells the story of a 12-year-old cartographer’s cross-country adventure from Montana to the Smithsonian Museum. Project fits into Jeunet’s body of work as it explores the imaginative mind of a child, mixing realism and fantasy.”
Jeunet has also picked up the screen rights to Thomas H. Cook’s novel Red Leaves, although it’s unknown if the adaptation would also be in English.  Red Leaves is a markedly darker tale than Spivet and “centers around the crumbling life of a father of a 15-year old boy accused of kidnapping an 8-year old.”  While Jeunet at times struggles with story and can get lost in quirk, his visual flair is undeniable and hopefully he’ll be able to balance it with a compelling narrative.  Hit the jump for synopses of both novels. http://collider.com/jean-pierre-jenuet-ts-spivet-red-leaves/99471/

by Adam Chitwood  Posted: June 26th, 2011

Some new set photos from The Dark Knight Rises have hit the web giving us our first look at the rebuilt Wayne Manor. As you recall, Batman’s house went all up in flames in Batman Begins, then he worked out of an underground command center in The Dark Knight, so it looks like he’ll finally be getting a decent home in Rises. The photos also reveal a graveyard that was built adjacent to Wollaton Hall in England, which is standing in for Wayne Manor. Will we finally be seeing Bruce Wayne visit his parents’ grave?
Hit the jump to check out the images. The Dark Knight Rises stars Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Matthew Modine, Josh Pence, Brett Cullen, Juno Temple, Nestor Carbonell, Tom Conti, Joey King, Chris Elli, Josh Stewart, Daniel Sunjata, Diego Klattenhoff and Burn Gorman. The film hits theaters on July 20th, 2012.  http://collider.com/the-dark-knight-rises-set-photos/98927/

Warner Bros. Still Planning GREEN LANTERN Sequel

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: June 26th, 2011

Despite an underwhelming box office and middling reviews, Warner Bros. is apparently still moving forward with a sequel to Green Lantern. Back in August, we reported that screenwriter Michael Goldenberg (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) had been hired to pen the follow-up, working from a treatment by the first film’s writers Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, and Marc Guggenheim. However, director Martin Campbell has stated that he won’t be back for another go around. THR reports that Warner Bros. “still believes” in the franchise and is hopeful that it will have long legs in theaters. Leaked MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL Trailer

by Dave Trumbore    Posted: June 26th, 2011

Though it will air before Transformers: Dark of the Moon this Wednesday, we have an early look at the trailer for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. It’s a bit difficult to glean plot details from the trailer as it’s in French, but an English cut should be arriving shortly. Language barrier aside, it’s reassuring to see that the fourth installment in the Mission: Impossible series has shaken off the rust of a five year hiatus. The action and effects look like what you would expect from the M:I series and Tom Cruise still appears to be up to the physical demands. Though he may not be around much longer, as many suspect he will pass the M:I torch to co-star Jeremy Renner. Hit the jump to check out the trailer. http://collider.com/mission-impossible-ghost-protocol-trailer/98883/

While the first trailer wasn’t great, the international trailer and this new trailer show some promise. I’m intrigued by the story, and Scherfig’s proven her talent behind the camera.

Kerry Washington On The Shortlist For Lead Female Role In Django Unchained

published: 2011-06-23 13:23:27 Author: Katey Rich
Amid the flurry of stories confirming yesterday that Jamie Foxx is probably the star of Quentin Tarantino's next film Django Unchained, it was easy to miss one intriguing detail in Variety. They report that Kerry Washington has met with Tarantino, and is one of the top contenders to play Broomhilda, the wife of the titular character Django who's been kidnapped by her owner, to be played by Leonardo DiCaprio. There aren't a ton of African American actresses as famous as Foxx, DiCaprio or co-star Christoph Waltz , or in the right age range to play Foxx's wife, so it makes sense that Washington would pop up on the list.

And yet, it's also really exciting to see her in contention. Washington is one of those actresses who's ridiculously talented but who flies so often under the radar, thanks to strong performances in underseen movies like Mother and Child, Night Catches Us and For Colored Girls, and the general challenge of being an African-American actress in an industry that still skews heavily white. I'm curious about who else might be meeting with Tarantino for the part-- maybe Washington's For Colored Girls co-star Anika Noni Rose, or an unknown actress?-- but without even having read the widely circulated script, I'm dying to see Washington take on the challenge.

New posters for Puss in Boots and Crazy, Stupid, Love have been released today. A spinoff of the Shrek franchise, Puss in Boots features the voices of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, and Zach Galifianakis. Guillermo del Toro serves as a consultant on the film, and when Steve saw some footage earlier this year he was very impressed. The poster for Puss in Boots features a cat walking away from an explosion, so it’s automatically better than any other poster ever. The film opens in 3D on November 4th.
A poster for the dramedy Crazy, Stupid, Love has also been released. Steve Carell stars as a man still reeling from his divorce when he begins taking advice from a ladies man played by Ryan Gosling. Full Cast for Woody Allen’s Next Film THE BOP DECAMERON Announced, Includes Jesse Eisenberg, Alec Baldwin and Ellen Page

Midnight in Paris is the best film Woody Allen has made in years. Whimsical, delightful and enchanting, it’s also one of the best times you’ll have at the movies all year. It’s this charm that I’m hoping Allen maintains for his next film The Bop Decameron, for which the full cast was just announced. Allen himself described this next effort as a “broad comedy,” and it’s set to shoot in Rome next month.
The cast for The Bop Decameron includes Allen himself, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penélope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig and Ellen Page, with Alison Pill, Alessandra Mastronardi and more set to co-star. 7 Clips and a Featurette from LARRY CROWNE Starring Tom Hanks and Julie Roberts

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: June 19th, 2011

Universal has sent over 7 clips and a featurette from Larry Crowne.  Directed by and starring Tom Hanks, the story centers on a laid-off middle-aged man (Hanks) who goes back to college and strikes up a relationship with one of his professors (Julia Roberts).  Larry Crowne is the first film Hanks has directed since 1996’s That Thing You Do, and he co-wrote the script with Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding).   While the story seems pretty simple, Hanks has proven himself behind the camera and people love the guy.  What I’m trying to say is…I’m pretty sure Larry Crowne is going to be a big hit for Universal.  Hanks and Roberts are joined in the film by Bryan Cranston, Cedric the Entertainer, Taraji P. by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: June 19th, 2011

By Wikipedia’s count, seven John le Carré novels have been adapted into films.  An eighth, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, is on the way.  According to THR, director Anton Corbijn (The American) will bring us the ninth.  Corbijn has signed on to direct A Most Wanted Man from a screenplay by Andrew Bovell (Edge of Darkness).  The story centers on a Muslim illegal immigrant caught up in the international war on terror.  The novel is loosely based on Murat Kurnaz, who was imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay for several years before release without charge in 2006.
The Amusement Park Films production is expected to begin shooting this winter in Hamburg.  Read the official book synopsis after the jump. http://collider.com/anton-corbijn-a-most-wanted-man/97370/

Evangeline Lilly Cast As An Elf In The Hobbit

published: 2011-06-19 18:35:32 Author: Josh Tyler
Liv Tyler won’t be in The Hobbit. While her Arwen character is an ancient immortal and thus technically alive at the time this prequel story takes place, Tyler confirmed awhile back that she hasn’t been asked to show up on set. So if you’re looking for a new female elf character to replace the Arwen in these new Middle Earth movies, who do you cast? Evangeline Lilly, of course. She’s like Liv Tyler, except without the Aerosmith connection.

Hobbit director Peter Jackson confirmed her involvement today on his Facebook page. Lilly has been hired to play a character newly created specifically for the feature version of The Hobbit. She’ll be a Woodland Elf named “Tauriel”. That name even has a translation already, because of course that’s how back-story obsessed author J.R.R. Tolkien would have wanted it, were he the one inventing this new elf-babe. PJ says “Tauriel” means “daughter of Mirkwood”. So now you have a pretty good idea of where she lives.

The addition of Lilly is important, not only because she’ll look good in pointy ears, but because it could help solve one of the 4 big story problems we predicted Peter Jackson would encounter in adapting Tolkien’s book for the screen. If Evangeline’s role is big enough, it could help clear up problem #4, which is that the original Tolkien version of The Hobbit contains no female characters. None. In Hollywood, the general consensus seems to be that girls need someone to identify with, if you want them buying tickets.

Evangeline isn’t the only person getting in the Middle Earth makeup chair down in New Zealand. Jackson has also confirmed the casting of actor Barry Humpries, to play the Goblin king. This is a villain character encountered by Bilbo and his Dwarf companions on their journey. You won’t see a lot of him, but he does play a pivotal role in the story. Jackson says he’ll portray the character “in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum”. In other words, you won’t actually see him on screen, but you will see a computer generated character created based on his performance.

The Hobbit Adds Evangeline Lilly and Barry Humphries
Jun 20, 2011 by Brian Gallagher
Director Peter Jackson is currently shooting The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in New Zealand, which is scheduled for release on December 14, 2012. The filmmaker took time out of his busy schedule to update his Facebook page with the news that Evangeline Lilly and Barry Humphries have joined The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey cast. Take a look at his entire Facebook post below.

Yikes! I can finally get back to some postings! We've finished our first block of shooting and moved straight into location scouting. More on that soon... But today, I'm thrilled to announce two new cast members who will be joining us for our second block of shooting.

Evangeline Lilly will be playing a new character-the Woodland Elf, Tauriel. Her name means 'daughter of Mirkwood' and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.) What is not a secret is how talented and compelling an actress Evangeline is; we are thrilled and excited she will be the one to bring our first true Sylvan Elf to life.

I'm also highly excited that Barry Humphries will be portraying the Goblin King, in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum. Barry is perhaps best known for his business and social connections as the long-time manager of Dame Edna Everage. He has also been an ardent supporter of the rather misunderstood and unfairly maligned Australian politician, Sir Les Patterson. However, in his spare time, Barry is also a fine actor, and we're looking forward to seeing him invest the Goblin King with the delicate sensitivity and emotional depth this character deserves.

Evangeline and Barry, along with Welsh actor Luke Evans as Bard and Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, just about rounds out the major casting. I cannot wait to get stuck into these new scenes!

More soon, including a flurry of answers to your questions. Sorry for the delay!

Cheers,
Peter J"

Charlie Day Circling Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 16th, 2011

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s up-and-up star Charlie Day is currently in talks to join director Guillermo del Toro’s alien-invasion pic Pacific Rim. Variety reports that Day would play a professor in the film leaving the rest of the role’s details to the imagination (for the record, I’m imagining him in black-rimmed glasses). If the deal goes through, the actor would join fellow FX alum Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) who signed on to star in the project back in May. Idris Elba is also rumored to be high on Legendary’s wishlist, although his involvement is yet to be confirmed.
As a refresher, Pacific Rim is penned by Travis Beacham and is described as a monster flick set within two worlds. It seems as if Beacham’s script will involve humans manning giant robots (i.e. “mecha”) in order to protect the world(s) from said alien invasion (a thought I would find somewhat cheesy if not for del Toro’s exceptional sense of visuals). You’ll remember that del Toro took over the helm of Pacific Rim shortly after Universal failed to greenlight his R-rated version of At the Mountains of Madness. As for Day, the actor can next be seen alongside Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, and Colin Farrell in the comedy Horrible Bosses opening July 8th. http://collider.com/charlie-day-pacific-rim/96946/

Luke Evans Is Bard the Grim, Benedict Cumberbatch to Voice Smaug in THE HOBBIT

by Jason Barr   Posted: June 16th, 2011

In a bit of dual casting news, both Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes in BBC’s Sherlock) have landed roles in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. Evans will make a turn as Bard the Grim and Deadline reports that Cumberbatch will voice the dragon Smaug in Jackson’s two-part return to Tolkien which is currently in production in New Zealand. Whereas Evans’ casting comes as a bit of fresh news, rumors of Cumberbatch’s involvement began to swirl back in May when The Hobbit co-star Martin Freeman let the news accidentally slip to a BBC reporter. Per the report, Cumberbatch will take on the role of Smaug via motion capture while also providing voice work for the character Necromancer.
As for Evans, it is believed that his turn as Bard will have a larger role in the second Hobbit installment. Regardless, it is assured that he and Cumberbatch’s Smaug will not be on good terms as the story goes that Smaug was responsible for the death of Bard’s father. Evans can next be seen in Immortals and The Three Musketeers while Cumberbatch has roles in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy. Part 1 of The Hobbit is slated to hit 3D theaters in December 2012 with Part 2 coming in December 2013. In addition to Evans, Cumberbatch, and the aforementioned Freeman, The Hobbit also stars Cate Blanchett, Ian McKellan, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Andy Serkis, and Stephen Fry. http://collider.com/luke-evans-benedict-cumberbatch-the-hobbit/96940/

Annette Bening in Talks to Join Paul Dano in HE LOVES ME

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 16th, 2011

It looks like Annette is close to locking in her first role post-The Kids Are All Right. Variety reports that the actress is in negotiations to star in Fox Searchlight’s He Loves Me. The film stars Paul Dano as “a once-great novelist who is creativity blocked due to heartache and loneliness,” only to be turned around when he writes his dream girl who then comes to life. So it’s like Weird Science meets Mannequin, only super indie.
Dano’s real-life girlfriend, Zoe Kazan, wrote the screenplay and will star in the film as the dream girl. Bening is eying the role of Dano’s mother, a painter who’s worried about how much her son hates her second-husband, a dirty hippie (the answer is a lot. He hates your dirty hippie husband a lot). Little Miss Sunshine directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are helming the flick, which starts filming next month. http://collider.com/annette-bening-he-loves-me-paul-dano/96848/

Sony Pictures Classics Acquires David Cronenberg’s A DANGEROUS METHOD

Director David Cronenberg’s latest flick, A Dangerous Method, has been picked up for distribution by Sony Pictures Classics. Based on Christopher Hampton’s 2002 play The Talking Cure, the film centers on the relationship between Carl Jung (played by Michael Fassbender), his mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen), and Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), the woman who came between them. The fantastic cast also includes Vincent Cassel. Images from the film were released late last year, giving us a preview of what’s sure to be one hell of a period film with Cronenberg at the helm. Zoe Saldana Joins Mark Ruffalo in J.J. Abrams-Produced INFINITELY POLAR BEAR

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 16th, 2011

Star Trek actress Zoe Saldana is currently in negotiations to join the cast of the marital drama Infinitely Polar Bear. Mark Ruffalo is attached to star, and J.J. Abrams is producing the flick which centers on a bipolar husband who, after going off his meds, loses his job forcing his wife to go back to work. Vulture reports that Saldana wil play Ruffalo’s wife in what they describe as “the dramatic version of Mr. Mom.”
Screenwriter Maya Forbes (Monsters vs. Aliens) is making her directorial debut on the project, which is getting some much-needed funding from investor Megan Ellison, who is also funding two of Paul Thomas Anderson’s projects. She’s like the guardian angel of movies. Infinitely Polar Bear is set to start shooting this September, before Saldana moves on to Star Trek 2. http://collider.com/zoe-saldana-infinitely-polar-bear-mark-ruffalo/96829/

Bradley Cooper Wants to Write the Script for HYPERION

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: May 27th, 2011

Apparently The Hangover Part II star Bradley Cooper is a burgeoning screenwriter in addition to being one of the most in-demand actors at the moment. Cooper appeared on Charlie Rose (via SlashFilm) earlier this week, and during their interview the actor revealed that he’s written an adaptation of Dan Simmons’ sci-fi epic Hyperion on spec with a friend. Cooper said that they have submitted the script to GK Films and are currently in negotiations to script the film adaptation. He adds, “Ideally I’d like to direct it, but there’s no way.”
The project has been in development for quite some time, with Scott Derrickson attached to direct in 2009. Cooper’s deal isn’t official by any means, but he’s definitely interested in tackling the material. A new trailer for Troy Nixey’s Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark has been released, and it’s just as creepy as the first one. The film was co-written and produced by Guillermo del Toro and centers on a family that moves into a new estate that houses very horrifying things. Every time the teaser trailer plays in a movie theater I’m at, the audience is audibly scared out of their minds. This new trailer gives a bit more plot info (though not a lot), and gives us a look at the cast. All in all, I can’t wait to see this in a full theater on a Friday night. Finally, a horror movie that’s actually scary. Starring Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, and Bailee Madison Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is set to be released on August 12th.

Confirmed: Orlando Bloom Will Reprise His Role as Legolas for THE HOBBIT

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 27th, 2011 at 10:23 am

Back in December, we reported that Orlando Bloom might reprise his role as Elven sharpshooter Legolas for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit.  Today on his official Facebook page, Jackson confirmed that he had Legolas bow:
Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas. I’m excited to announce today that we’ll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I’m thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older—and he doesn’t! I guess that’s why he makes such a wonderful elf.
Bloom is the latest Lord of the Rings cast member to join The Hobbit.  While Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Elrond (Hugo Weaving), and Gollum (Andy Serkis) actually appear in J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, Jackson has apparently made room for Legolas, Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), old Bilbo (Ian Holm), and Frodo (Elijah Wood).  Hit the jump for the synopsis of the novel.  The two-part 3D film is set for December 2012 and December 2013.

Ed Westwick to Play Tybalt in ROMEO AND JULIET
by Adam Chitwood Posted: May 23rd, 2011 at 3:26 pm

Because it’s been almost 15 years since Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo + Juliet, and Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes are all old now, it’s apparently time to make a new version of William Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy. Hailee Steinfeld is set to star as Juliet in the adaptation, set to be directed by Italian filmmaker Carlo Carlie (Flight of the Innocent). Now, Variety reports that Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick is in final negotiations to star as Tybalt in the indie. Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) wrote the screenplay and Holly Hunter recently joined the cast as The Nurse. The role of Romeo has yet to be cast. Production is set to begin this summer in Italy.

Sony Picks up Re-Imagining of THE LITTLE MERMAID for COUNTRY STRONG Filmmaker Shana Feste
by Matt Goldberg Posted: May 23rd, 2011 at 2:03 pm

Would you like to see another fairy tale re-imagining? Your answer is moot because you’re getting more re-imaginings whether you want them or not. Heat Vision reports that that Sony has picked up a re-imagining of Hans Christen Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, Carolyn Turgeon’s novel Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale (although “A Twist on a Classic Tale” could be applied to every single re-imagining that’s out there). Filmmaker Shana Feste (Country Strong) will adapt the story, which “centers on a princess who, in order to save her ravaged kingdom, sets out on a dangerous journey to marry the prince of her rival kingdom, not knowing that a beautiful mermaid has fallen for the same man and has sacrificed everything to be with him.” Aaaaawkwaaaard…

While the film is being billed as a “dark re-imagining” of Andersen’s tale, the original Little Mermaid was already incredibly dark. In the original tale, the mermaid sacrifices everything to be with the prince, he marries someone else anyway, and she kills herself. If she had a singing Caribbean crab as her friend, maybe that wouldn’t have happened. Hit the jump for the synopsis of Turgeon’s novel.

First Trailer for Showtime’s New Drama Series HOMELAND Starring Claire Danes

Last night The Borgias finished off their first season (and just got picked up for a second season as well), and viewers who tuned in also got a sneak peek at Showtime’s new thriller Homeland.  Starring Clarie Danes, Damian Lewis and Mandy Patinkin, the series follows a taut psychological thriller about a volatile CIA officer (Danes) who becomes convinced that a recently rescued American POW (Lewis) may be connected to an al Qaeda plot to be carried out on U.S. soil. I’m not convinced it looks quite as thrilling as a series like 24, but it looks like it has potential even without Kiefer Sutherland ripping throats. Trailer for TAKE SHELTER Starring Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain

The trailer for Jeff Nichols’ intense psychological drama Take Shelter has gone online.  I caught the film at Sundance and while I thought it could stand to lose a good twenty minutes to keep up the pacing and maintain the dread it creates in the first act, but the core of the story is fantastic and the performances are solid.  The trailer tries to play up the psychological aspect of the story and that’s kind of necessary because after the recent spate of devastating tornados, most folks aren’t going to think that building a storm shelter is a crazy idea.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film stars Michael Shannon, Jessica Chastain, Shea Whigham, Katy Mixon, and Kathy Baker.  Take Shelter opens October 7th. http://collider.com/take-shelter-trailer/92396/

First Trailer for THE MUPPETS plus Poster for Fake Movie GREEN WITH ENVY

by Collider Staff    Posted: May 23rd, 2011 at 11:37 am

The first trailer for The Muppets has gone online.  It takes a little while to get to the actual Muppets, but stick through the trailer for the first 50 seconds and you’ll get there.  This is really more of an announcement trailer, and I’m not sure what will set this Muppets movie apart, but creating a trailer that basically goes “Surprise!  Muppets!” isn’t a bad way to start.  I’m slightly confused by the set-up of a fake Jason Segel/Amy Adams romance flick called Green with Envy, but I’ll go with it for now.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer for The Muppets and the poster for Green with EnvyThe Muppets also stars Chris Cooper, Rashida Jones, and a slew of celebrity cameos.  The film opens November 23rd. http://collider.com/the-muppets-movie-trailer/89827/

Benedict Cumberbatch Joins THE HOBBIT

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 23rd, 2011 at 9:45 am

If you watched the first season of BBC’s Sherlock, then you know that star Benedict Cumberbatch was a terrific modern interpretation of Sherlock Holmes that didn’t simply copy TV’s other modern-day Holmes, Hugh Laurie’s Dr. Gregory House.  Now he’s set to join his Sherlock Holmes co-star Martin Freeman in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit.  Freeman accidentally let the news slip to BBC Entertainment Reporter Lizo Mzimba [via TheOneRing], but I fully support any additional attention to Cumberbatch.  He’s definitely an actor worth taking note of and audiences will get to see more of him later this year not only in the second season of Sherlock, but also in Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Steven Spielberg’s War Horse.
The Hobbit is set to arrive in 3D in two parts.  Part 1 is slated to open December 2012 with Part 2 set to hit theaters in December 2013.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

Rumor: Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro to Reunite for THE COMEDIAN?

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 23rd, 2011 at 7:12 am

Let’s keep this one in the rumor mill for now, but it’s possible that Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro could reunite for The Comedian.  Showbiz411 reports that producer Art Linson co-wrote a script with comedian Jeffrey Ross about an insult comic who’s described as a cross between Don Rickles and Joan River.  According to Showbiz411, Linson would like Scorsese to direct.  I bet he would.  I bet producers the world over would like Scorsese to direct their movie as well.  If the project were to move forward (and that’s a big “If”), it would draw an obvious comparison to Scorsese and De Niro’s 1982 film The King of Comedy, even though the characters sound very different.
The reason this all sounds slightly dubious (or at least incredibly hopeful on the part of Linson) is that Scorsese has a wealth of other projects he could choose.  Hit the jump for a refresher of what Scorsese is circling as his follow up to this year’s Hugo Cabret, which is the director’s first family film and his first 3D film. http://collider.com/martin-scorsese-robert-de-niro-the-comedian/92309/

Aaron Eckhart to Hunt Villainous Peter Pan in New Movie

Posted: May 10th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

There are a lot of "Peter Pan" projects in the works, including a prequel that has Channing Tatum attached. Today, ScreenDaily has learned that Warner Bros is developing its own version of the story, which will be much darker than previously seen.

Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) has signed on to play Captain Hook, who has been re-imagined as a tormented former detective on the trail of a childlike kidnapper (Peter Pan). AnnaSophia Robb (Soul Surfer) will portray Wendy, the lone survivor who leaves an asylum to help in the hunt. And Sean Bean ("Game of Thrones") has been cast as Smee, the chief detective and Hook's only ally on the force.

Guillermo Del Toro was once attached to direct the film, but has since been replaced by Ben Hibon, who worked in the animation department on "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1." Filming is scheduled to begin in October in Eastern Europe.

Hugo Weaving Confirmed for "The Hobbit"

Posted: May 10th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Back on May 1st, director Peter Jackson posted a photo of him and Hugo Weaving on the set of "The Hobbit." Many assumed that Weaving will be reprising the role of Elrond, but Jackson said that the actor simply stopped by for a visit.

Now, Ian McKellen has updated his official blog with news that Weaving is officially on board.

He wrote: "
Martin Freeman has left 'The Hobbit.' This is not another April Fool, just a May Fact. Before signing as Bilbo, Martin had agreed to make three 90-minute TV films in London, again playing Dr Watson to Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes.

No worries: he'll be back in Middle Earth after our first hiatus, during which Peter Jackson will have spare time to edit the scenes already completed. The rest of the cast remains on duty for another few weeks, working on hobbit-less sections of the film. These involve dwarves of course but also elves, with Hugo Weaving back for a stretch as Lord Elrond.

"Men in Black" Director to Helm "Dinosaurs Versus Aliens"

Posted: May 10th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Barry Sonnenfeld, who is currently filming the third "Men in Black" film, has come up with a new alien story, which he is calling "Dominion: Dinosaurs Versus Aliens."

The director has teamed with comic book writer Grant Morrison to develop a graphic novel and a movie. Morrison, whose comic book work includes "Batman" and "The Invisibles," will write both the graphic novel and the script. Sonnenfeld will direct the film. Check out the first concept art below.

The story chronicles a secret prehistoric world war battle. When an alien invasion attacks Earth in the age of the dinosaurs, the planet's only hope is the giants that roam the planet with, it turns out, a lot more intelligence than previously realized.

"Growing up, my fascination was all things dinosaur, and as an adult, I've had some success making films about aliens, so this is a dream come true," said Sonnenfeld. "We've been trying to do a project ever since."

Ethan Hawke Joins "Total Recall" Remake

Posted: May 10th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Ethan Hawke has joined the cast of "Total Recall," Columbia Pictures' remake of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger film that has Colin Farrell starring.

The new story ditches the Martian storyline and instead involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, with Douglas Quaid (Farrell) a factory worker in the latter who begins to believe he is a spy, although he doesn't know for which side.

The movie has been casting to make its June start in Toronto with Bryan Cranston playing the villain. Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel are in negotiations for the female leads. Hawke's role is being kept secret.

The project re-teams Pacino with director Barry Levinson after working together on the Emmy-winning HBO film "You Don't Know Jack."
