Plot: The story revolves around Charlie Kenton (Jackman), a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

"Real Steel" is directed by Shawn Levy (Date Night) and is scheduled to hit theaters October 7th.

Aaron Eckhart to Hunt Villainous Peter Pan in New Movie

Posted: May 10th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

There are a lot of "Peter Pan" projects in the works, including a prequel that has Channing Tatum attached. Today, ScreenDaily has learned that Warner Bros is developing its own version of the story, which will be much darker than previously seen.

Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) has signed on to play Captain Hook, who has been re-imagined as a tormented former detective on the trail of a childlike kidnapper (Peter Pan). AnnaSophia Robb (Soul Surfer) will portray Wendy, the lone survivor who leaves an asylum to help in the hunt. And Sean Bean ("Game of Thrones") has been cast as Smee, the chief detective and Hook's only ally on the force.

Guillermo Del Toro was once attached to direct the film, but has since been replaced by Ben Hibon, who worked in the animation department on "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1." Filming is scheduled to begin in October in Eastern Europe.

Hugo Weaving Confirmed for "The Hobbit"

Posted: May 10th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Back on May 1st, director Peter Jackson posted a photo of him and Hugo Weaving on the set of "The Hobbit." Many assumed that Weaving will be reprising the role of Elrond, but Jackson said that the actor simply stopped by for a visit.

Now, Ian McKellen has updated his official blog with news that Weaving is officially on board.

He wrote: "
Martin Freeman has left 'The Hobbit.' This is not another April Fool, just a May Fact. Before signing as Bilbo, Martin had agreed to make three 90-minute TV films in London, again playing Dr Watson to Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes.

No worries: he'll be back in Middle Earth after our first hiatus, during which Peter Jackson will have spare time to edit the scenes already completed. The rest of the cast remains on duty for another few weeks, working on hobbit-less sections of the film. These involve dwarves of course but also elves, with Hugo Weaving back for a stretch as Lord Elrond.

"Men in Black" Director to Helm "Dinosaurs Versus Aliens"

Posted: May 10th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Barry Sonnenfeld, who is currently filming the third "Men in Black" film, has come up with a new alien story, which he is calling "Dominion: Dinosaurs Versus Aliens."

The director has teamed with comic book writer Grant Morrison to develop a graphic novel and a movie. Morrison, whose comic book work includes "Batman" and "The Invisibles," will write both the graphic novel and the script. Sonnenfeld will direct the film. Check out the first concept art below.

The story chronicles a secret prehistoric world war battle. When an alien invasion attacks Earth in the age of the dinosaurs, the planet's only hope is the giants that roam the planet with, it turns out, a lot more intelligence than previously realized.

"Growing up, my fascination was all things dinosaur, and as an adult, I've had some success making films about aliens, so this is a dream come true," said Sonnenfeld. "We've been trying to do a project ever since."

Ethan Hawke Joins "Total Recall" Remake

Posted: May 10th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Ethan Hawke has joined the cast of "Total Recall," Columbia Pictures' remake of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger film that has Colin Farrell starring.

The new story ditches the Martian storyline and instead involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, with Douglas Quaid (Farrell) a factory worker in the latter who begins to believe he is a spy, although he doesn't know for which side.

The movie has been casting to make its June start in Toronto with Bryan Cranston playing the villain. Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel are in negotiations for the female leads. Hawke's role is being kept secret.

Al Pacino Joins John Travolta in "Gotti" Biopic

Posted: May 10th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Al Pacino (The Godfather) is joining the cast of "Gotti: Three Generations," the true-life crime saga, which stars John Travolta as John Gotti Sr. The actor will play Gambino crime family underboss Neil Dellacroce, an associate and mentor to Gotti Sr.

The project re-teams Pacino with director Barry Levinson after working together on the Emmy-winning HBO film "You Don't Know Jack."

Other key roles that have been cast include that of Gotti Sr's wife Victoria, who will be played by Travolta's real-life wife Kelly Preston; Angel Gotti, the daughter of John Sr and Victoria, who will be played by the Travolta's daughter Ella Bleu Travolta; Gotti Sr's associate Angelo Ruggiero, who will be played by Joe Pesci; and Kim Gotti, John Gotti Jr's wife, who will be played by Lindsay Lohan.

Roles yet to be cast include those of Gotti Jr. and his sister Victoria.

Al Pacino Joins Barry Levinson’s GOTTI: THREE GENERATIONS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 10th, 2011

Every time Al Pacino tries to escape the mob genre, they pull him back in.  THR reports that the loud actor will reunite with his You Don’t Know Jack director Barry Levinson for Gotti: Three Generations.  Pacino will play Gambino crime family underboss Neil Dellacroce, an associate and mentor to Gotti Sr. (John Travolta).  The cast also includes Kelly Preston as Gotti Sr.’s wife Victoria, Ella Bleu Travolta as Gotti Sr. and Victoria’s daughter Angel, Joe Pesci as Gotti Sr.’s associate Angelo Ruggiero, and Lindsay Lohan as John Gotti Jr.’s wife Kim.  Despite the cast and the director, I can’t shake the feeling that this movie is going straight to DVD, or, at best, will straight to HBO.
The remaining key roles to be cast are John Gotti Jr. and his sister Victoria.  James Toback (Bugsy) has been hired to revise Leo Rossi’s original script.

Nicole Kidman in Talks to Star in SPECTRE for Director James Wan

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: May 10th, 2011

As the Cannes Film Festival ramps up, expect plenty of deal-making news regarding casting, director hires, and distribution as producers find the cash to hire actors and directors, and get studios on board to finance and distribute their movies.  For example, IM Global has announced it will shop nine movies to buyers at the festival including the supernatural thriller Spectre from director James Wan (Insidious).  Variety reports that Nicole Kidman is in talks to star in the film.
Kidman is also circling the drama Our Wild Life and earlier this year she signed on to star opposite Colin Firth in Chan-wook Park’s Stoker.  Kidman will next be seen alongside Nicolas Cage in Joel Schumacher’s Trespass.

New Trailer for REAL STEEL Starring Hugh Jackman

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 10th, 2011

DreamWorks has released a new trailer for Shawn Levy’s Real Steel.  The film stars Hugh Jackman as a washed-up boxer who reconnects with his estranged son (Dakota Goyo, who played Lil’ Thor in Thor) as they build and train a fighting robot to fight in the World Robot Boxing championship.  I’m trying to cast aside cynicism on this project, but I can’t get past Levy.  His films tend to be lowest common denominator family fare and judging by this trailer, it doesn’t look like Real Steel is going to break that trend.  It looks too saccharine to be fun and too silly to be taken seriously.  Hopefully I’m wrong and I’ll finally like one of the guy’s films because he’s certainly not going away anytime soon. It’s worth mentioning that Steven Spielberg was heavily involved in the project and fought to keep the project at DreamWorks when the studio broke away from Paramount.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Click here to check out Steve’s visit to the editing bay.  He thinks the film is going to be good.  Based on what I’ve seen (and granted, he’s seen more of the movie than I have), I beg to differ. Real Steel also stars Anthony Mackie, Hope Davis, Kevin Durand, and Evangeline Lilly.  The film opens October 7th.

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis to Star in Education Drama STILL I RISE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 10th, 2011

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis will star in the topical drama Still I Rise.  Directed by Daniel Barnz (Beastly), the actresses will play a pair of mothers who join forces to reform an inner-city public school.  According to Deadline, “the film takes aim at the crisis of public education in America.”  So is it going to attack the evils of standardized testing?  That there aren’t enough teachers and class sizes are swelling to where no student can get the attention they deserve?  Or will it be an attack on the abysmal pay for teachers?  I’m guessing “None of the Above”.  I’m betting that it will be an attempt to root out the “bad” teachers and a nice update to the school’s facilities.
Gyllenhaal and Davis are both great actresses and I hope they’ve signed onto a project that examines the complexity of our education problem rather than trying to uphold some quick, ineffective fixes.  And if not, perhaps they can do a film where the military’s budget accidentally goes to education.

Kevin Dillon Learns How to Be a Gentleman
Entourage star Kevin Dillon has landed the second lead in the new CBS pilot How to Be a Gentleman alongside David Hornsby.

The pilot, which is based off the book of the same name by John Bridges, centers on Allan, an uptight man (David Hornsby) who gets life lessons from his exuberant friend, Bert. Kevin Dillon will portray Bert, who has a youthful outlook on life, although he tends to overstep his boundaries.

David Hornsby wrote the pilot script. It is unclear when the pilot will go into production.

Kevin Dillon will next be seen playing Johnny Drama on the eighth and final season of Entourage, which will premiere sometime this summer on HBO.

Mary Lynn Rajskub and Michelle Trachtenberg Land Roles on CBS Pilots
Two CBS pilots have added new cast members with Mary Lynn Rajskub joining How to Be a Gentleman and Michelle Trachtenberg signing on for an Untitled Peter Knight Project.

Mary Lynn Rajskub will play Janet on How to Be a Gentleman, the no-nonsense sister of David Hornsby's character, Alan. We reported earlier today that Kevin Dillon signed on to play Bert, who tries to teach Alan about how to live a better life. David Hornsby wrote the pilot script.

Michelle Trachtenberg is set to play Grace, the female lead on the Untitled Peter Knight Project. The program is a workplace comedy centering on the young workers at a venture capital firm. Grace turns some heads when she's promoted from the mailroom to a junior associate position. The promotion is devastating to Danny, who trained with Grace and also has a crush on her. Tim Peper has also joined the cast of this untitled project, playing the best friend of Danny. The Danny role has yet to be cast.

It isn't clear when these pilots will begin production.

Christina Applegate Set for Untitled NBC Pilot
Actress Christina Applegate will star in the Untitled Emily Spivey Project as a working mother.

The actress recently passed on the ABC pilot Good Christian Bitches to star in this NBC project from Parks and Recreation producer Emily Spivey. The project will revolve around Christina Applegate's character, a working mother who has to deal with her stay-at-home husband and parents.

Emily Spivey wrote the pilot script and will executive produce alongside Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels. No production schedule was given for the pilot.

Christina Applegate was most recently seen in the New Line Cinema comedy Hall Pass.

First Set Photos of Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy in SPIDER-MAN Reboot

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 9th, 2010

Earlier this week, we got our first look at Emma Stone sporting her new blonde hairstyle as she walked the red carpet at the Trevor Live event.  Stone changed her hair color because she’s playing Gwen Stacy in Marc Webb’s upcoming Spider-Man reboot.  Now set photos of Stone as Gwen Stacy have leaked online.  The source also identifies what’s happening in the scene that was being filmed.
Hit the jump to check out the set photos, minor spoilers about the scene being filmed, and my major speculation.  The untitled Spider-Man reboot also stars Andrew Garfield, Rhys Ifans, Sally Field, and Martin Sheen.  It’s set to open in 3D on July 3, 2012.
spider-man_reboot_movie_image_set_photo_emma_stone_03
The photos are from Just Jared.  The site reports that the scene being filmed is a funeral and takes place in the rain in front of a cathedral.  So who is Gwen mourning?  My guess is that it’s her father, George Stacy (who’s being played by Denis Leary).  In the comics, George Stacy dies while saving a child from falling debris and Gwen blames Spider-Man (even though George is an admirer of the web-slinger).

Trailer and Poster for KILL THE IRISHMAN Starring Ray Stevenson

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 9th, 2010

Anchor Bay has released a trailer and poster for their new crime thriller Kill the Irishman.  The film centers on real-life Irish mobster Danny Greene (played by Ray Stevenson) who decided to stop being a loan shark for the Italian mob and go into business for himself.  Not surprisingly, the mafia didn’t take too kindly to that career change and they tried to blow him up.  A lot.  There are about 14 explosions over the course of this two-and-a-half minute trailer.  However, the film does look like a nice showcase for Stevenson and Stevenson’s mustache.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster.  Kill the Irishman also stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Val Kilmer, and Christopher Walken.  It opens March 11, 2011.
Click over to Yahoo! Movies to see the trailer in HD.

Here’s the official synopsis for Kill the Irishman:
Over the summer of 1976, thirty-six bombs detonate in the heart of Cleveland while a turf war raged between Irish mobster Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson) and the Italian mafia.  Based on a true story, KILL THE IRISHMAN chronicles Greene’s heroic rise from a tough Cleveland neighborhood to become an enforcer in the local mob.  Turning the tables on loan shark Shondor Birns (Christopher Walken) and allying himself with gangster John Nardi (Vincent D’Onofrio), Greene stops taking orders from the mafia and pursues his own power. Surviving countless assassination attempts from the mob and killing off anyone who went after him in retaliation, Danny Greene’s infamous invincibility and notorious fearlessness eventually led to the collapse of mafia syndicates across the U.S. and also earned him the status of the man the mob couldn’t kill.
Written and directed by Jonathan Hensleigh and also starring Val Kilmer, Paul Sorvino and Linda Cardellini, KILL THE IRISHMAN is inspired by Rick Porello’s true crime account “To Kill The Irishman: The War That Crippled The Mafia.”

First Trailer for Shawn Levy’s REAL STEEL

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: December 9th, 2010

Hugh Jackman Real Steel movie image slice
The first trailer for Shawn Levy’s Real Steel has leaked onto the net and you can check it out after the jump.  Originally the trailer was going to premiere on ESPN tonight, but as is often the case, it leaked early.  As you might have just seen, I visited the editing room of Real Steel earlier this week and saw about ten minutes of the film and interviewed Levy.  I learned that none of the effects in the teaser are final, and the footage you’re about to watch only skims the surface in terms of story and what the movie is about.
I’ll be honest, I think the teaser is decent, but not a home-run.  I say this because after watching ten minutes of footage, there is a lot more to Real Steel than what’s in this teaser and I really think this film is going to surprise audiences when it gets released in October, 2011.  Hit the jump to check it out for yourself and make sure to read my edit bay visit!
Here’s the synopsis. Thanks to Max for the heads up.
A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. The film also stars Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand and Anthony Mackie.
