Johnny Depp May Play A Magician In Carter Beats The Devil

2006 was the year of the magician, with a series of conjuror themed films battling it out in the hearts and minds of America, a battle won quite handily by Christopher Nolan’s underrated movie The Prestige. Yet even with all the magic acts on screen that year, magicians never became the new pirates. Maybe what the Penn Jillettes of this world need is Johnny Depp.


The LA Times says Johnny Depp is at the top of Warner Bros. list of actors they want to play the lead in Carter Beats the Devil. The film, currently in development at the studio, is based on a book by Glen David Gold. His novel takes a 1920s magician and puts him in a strange and mysterious situation. The story mixes in historical figures, for instance at some point the main character Charles Carter will attempt to saw then president Warren G. Harding in half.


This movie has been sitting around in development hell for awhile now, at one point even Tom Cruise was supposed to be involved. But if you’re looking for a flamboyant magician look no further than Johnny Depp. He’s your main if you’re looking for someone to play a less annoying version of David Blaine. Actually just give Jack Sparrow a top hat and you pretty much have this part cast.


For now Depp is just one of the names they’re rumored to be considering. Johnny may have his hands full with other projects. He’s currently in pre-production on The Lone Ranger and somewhere along the way he’s been filming Dark Shadows, to say nothing of the other half-dozen or so upcoming films he’s rumored to be involved in.

Robert Pattinson has found his way into the new David Cronenberg movie somehow, uniting two fan groups once voted least likely ever to run in to each other. Cronenberg is known for challenging, violent, controversial movies like A History of Violence which are inevitably seen for very few. Robert Pattinson is known for appearing on the wall calendars of soccer moms who are far to own that kind of calendar, as a sparkly vampire.


Pattinson is currently off filming Cosmopolis with Cronenberg and in the process has fulfilled the fantasies of neither of those groups, but has instead inadvertently lived the dream of every man over fifteen who’s ever been forced to see a Twilight movie and wished someone would hit Robert Pattinson with a pie in the face. Good news, they have.

Robert Pattinson: Pie Face For 'Cosmopolis'!

Robert Pattinson gets hit in the face with a pie while filming scenes on the set of his new film, Cosmopolis, on Tuesday (June 28) in Toronto, Canada.

The 24-year-old Twilight star has been working on Cosmopolis since late last month.

On the same day, Robert was spotted rehearsing scenes with his co-star Kevin Durand in front of a vandalized limousine.

The David Cronenberg-directed drama will hit theaters sometime next year!

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is red hot in Antonio Berardi at the premiere of Transformers: Dark of the Moon on Tuesday (June 28) in NYC’s Times Square.

The 24-year-old British model and actress met up with co-stars Shia LaBeouf and Tyrese Gibson on the red carpet.

Earlier in the day, Rosie got to work promoting the action flick on Live with Regis & Kelly.

Based on the fan-favorite video game franchise, 2006’s Silent Hill was panned by critics and never made a profit from domestic sales. However, reaching nearly $100 million in sales internationally and making Box Office Mojo’s Top 10 video game adaptations was apparently enough to elicit a sequel. Silent Hill: Revelation 3D creeped us out a couple of months ago with some carnival-themed set pieces.
Today we have some new images from the set, ones that take a closer look at some of our favorite characters and monsters. Sharp-eyed viewers among you might be able to spot Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) looking creepier than I’ve ever seen her before. Bryan Cranston in Talks to Join Ben Affleck’s ARGO

Casting seems to be moving right along for Ben Affleck’s next directorial project Argo. Just yesterday, it was announced that John Goodman and Affleck himself had joined Alan Arkin in the cast, and now Variety reports that Bryan Cranston is in negotiations to take on one of the lead roles. The film tells the true story of how the CIA and the Canadian government teamed up to rescue six U.S. diplomats who had been taken hostage by Iranians in 1979. The CIA’s ruse involved convincing the Iranian government that the diplomats were actually a Hollywood film crew scouting locations.
Cranston will play an Irish CIA agent from Boston who used to be the bodyguard to President Eisenhower. Goodman plays Oscar-winning Planet of the Apes makeup artist John Chambers, Arkin is set to portray a Hollywood producer and O.S.S. veteran, and Affleck is taking on the lead. George Clooney and Grant Heslov are producing. Given the caliber of Affleck’s recent work and the cast he’s assembled so far,  Argo is shaping up to be quite the flick. http://collider.com/bryan-cranston-argo/99368/

Paramount has released the first trailer for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, the fourth entry in the spy franchise. The trailer is pretty much everything you want out of a Mission: Impossible movie, and it looks like it could be the best yet. The action looks great without being cheesy or showy, and the cast assembled here is top-notch. Plus, freaking Brad Bird (Ratatouille) is making his live-action directorial debut.

Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, and Ving Rhames reprise their series roles, joined by Jeremy Renner, Josh Holloway, Anil Kapoor, Léa Seydoux, and Vladimir Mashkov. Mission: Impossible III director J.J. Abrams is on board as producer.  Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol opens on December 16.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

We’ve got a few casting stories for you this evening. First up, Scarlett Johansson is set to star in John Carney’s (Once) music-oriented film Can a Song Save Your Life?. The Sunday Business Post Online (via The Playlist) reports that Judd Apatow will produce the pic, which centers on “a washed-up A&R man who forms a passionate bond with a young singer-songwriter (Johansson) from out of town.” Carney wrote the screenplay, and Mark Ruffalo and Jim Carrey have been rumored for the male lead. Filming begins in New York next year.
Additionally, Wizards of Waverly Place star Jake T. Austin has landed the role of Huck Finn in Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn. Joel Courtney (Super 8) is in talks to take on the role of Tom Sawyer. Variety reports that Austin is in final negotiations to star in the adaptation of the Mark Twain classic, which Jo Kastner is directing with filming expected to get underway this August in Bulgaria. Set Photos From THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Reveal Rebuilt Wayne Manor

Some new set photos from The Dark Knight Rises have hit the web giving us our first look at the rebuilt Wayne Manor. As you recall, Batman’s house went all up in flames in Batman Begins, then he worked out of an underground command center in The Dark Knight, so it looks like he’ll finally be getting a decent home in Rises. The photos also reveal a graveyard that was built adjacent to Wollaton Hall in England, which is standing in for Wayne Manor. Will we finally be seeing Bruce Wayne visit his parents’ grave?

Warner Bros. Still Planning GREEN LANTERN Sequel

Despite an underwhelming box office and middling reviews, Warner Bros. is apparently still moving forward with a sequel to Green Lantern. Back in August, we reported that screenwriter Michael Goldenberg (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) had been hired to pen the follow-up, working from a treatment by the first film’s writers Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, and Marc Guggenheim. However, director Martin Campbell has stated that he won’t be back for another go around. Though it will air before Transformers: Dark of the Moon this Wednesday, we have an early look at the trailer for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. It’s a bit difficult to glean plot details from the trailer as it’s in French, but an English cut should be arriving shortly. Language barrier aside, it’s reassuring to see that the fourth installment in the Mission: Impossible series has shaken off the rust of a five year hiatus. The action and effects look like what you would expect from the M:I series and Tom Cruise still appears to be up to the physical demands. Though he may not be around much longer, as many suspect he will pass the M:I torch to co-star Jeremy Renner. "Mission: Impossible 4" Trailer Leaks Online!

Sandra Bullock Donates $1 Million Toward Tsunami Relief

Sandra Bullock looks upbeat as she heads out to run errands on Wednesday (March 16) in New York City.


The 46-year-old actress has donated $1 million to the Red Cross to support tsunami relief efforts in Japan!


“The American Red Cross is extremely grateful for this generous support from Sandra Bullock and her family,” the organization said in a statement. “This contribution is vitally important as the Red Cross works to provide critical assistance and essential relief items in this time of urgent need for so many people in Japan.”

Tom Cruise continues work on his new film, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, on Thursday night (March 3) in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
The 48-year-old actor shot some scenes on the docks of Granville Island after spending some time with his wife Katie Holmes and their 4-year-old daughter Suri.
Tom’s other movie, Rock of Ages, recently added Alec Baldwin to its cast.

Chris Pine & Olivia Wilde: 'Welcome to People' Pair

Chris Pine and Olivia Wilde walk around the set of their upcoming movie, Welcome to People, on Friday (March 4) in Los Angeles.
The drama, expected to hit theaters sometime in 2012, centers around a man who has to deliver $150,000 of his deceased father’s fortune to a sister he’s never met.
Olivia, who has reportedly been spending time with Ryan Gosling, recently shared an embarrassing story about a phone call with President Obama
“He was calling to thank me for traveling to Iowa in October 2007 to volunteer for the campaign. I was very professional the whole time we spoke, then I hung up the phone - or so I thought - and started squealing for about 15 seconds,” she told the April issue of Cosmopolitan.
“I later found out from a friend who was with him that he listened to the shrieking,” she added, “and laughed the entire time.”

Abigail Breslin Also In Contention To Star In The Hunger Games

We reported yesterday that Jennifer Lawrence was reportedly joining Hailee Steinfeld in serious consideration to play Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, Lionsgate's planned adaptation of the young adult novel series that they're hoping will be the next Twilight. Now Variety is adding a third name to the list, and yet another Oscar nominee: Abigail Breslin.


Lawrence is apparently still in the lead, but the studio still hasn't decided if they want the character to play younger or older. If they go with Lawrence she may play too old by the time they get to the third book as she already looks older than her 20 years. Breslin or Steinfeld would grow into the role, and since Steinfeld is working of a recent Oscar nom, expect her to land it if she wants it.


The Hunger Games, which is set for a release date in March 2012, will be based on the first novel in Suzanne Collins's trilogy of books. The story is set in a destroyed North America run by the Capitol. Every year a boy and a girl are selected to participate in the Hunger Games where they must fight to the death as entertainment for the Capitol. Our hero, Katniss, volunteers to enter the games in place of her younger sister and this is where our story begins.


Hunger Games is a trilogy of novels so this could potentially be a big break for an up and coming young actress, not unlike the role of Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, except it plays younger. More on this as they near production.

Emily Blunt leaves the gym on Thursday (March 3) after a workout in West Hollywood.
The 28-year-old British actress has been lightening her locks for her role in the upcoming thriller Looper!
“I had to dye my hair blonde for my next project, and there was a newspaper article saying, ‘She’s gone so LA’. Why, because I’ve gone blonde? There’s plenty of blondes in Australia and England,” Emily told Australia’s Herald Sun, adding that she’s living in L.A. because hubby John Krasinski works on The Office in town.

Tom Cruise & Jeremy Renner Follow 'Ghost Protocol'

Tom Cruise and Jeremy Renner continue to film for Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol on Wednesday (March 2) in Vancouver, Canada.
According to a blog post, a band called By Starlight was playing in Vancouver and abruptly stopped due to a conflict with the shooting of Mission Impossible 4. “The PA offered the band $500 to stop playing because it was interfering with filming. The band took the money and everyone went home,” the blogger alleged.
However, according to the venue’s manager, Jeff Cawston, “There was no issue whatsoever. The bands were made very much aware of the situation when they booked the venue. The story is not true. The bands played until one o’clock in the morning and everything was good.”

Carey Mulligan steps out for a screening of Happythankyoumoreplease held at NYC’s Landmark Sunshine Cinema on Wednesday (March 2).
The 25-year-old actress chatted with the film’s writer/director, Josh Radnor, at the event sponsored by The Cinema Society and Tommy Hilfiger.

Ryan Gosling & George Clooney: 'Ides of March' in Oxford!

Ryan Gosling suits up as he arrives on the set of his latest movie, The Ides of March, on Wednesday (March 2) in Oxford, Ohio.

The 30-year-old actor carried a cup of coffee with him on the way to the set, where George Clooney was spotted behind the camera.

Ryan and Evan Rachel Wood, who also stars in the movie, took a trip to the Cincinnati Zoo earlier in the week and met animals including porcupines, a sloth, and a rhinoceros!

George Clooney & Ryan Gosling: 'Ides of March' Miami Men

 

George Clooney and Ryan Gosling continue to work on their new movie, Ides of March, on Tuesday (March 1) in Oxford, Ohio.

The two shot some scenes on the Miami University of Ohio campus.

The day before, Ryan and co-star Evan Rachel Wood got the chance to get up and close with some animals at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.

Ryan also reportedly spent some one on one time with Olivia Wilde at a local aquarium, where they were spotted holding hands.

Tom Cruise & Paula Patton Shoot 'Mission: Impossible 4'

Tom Cruise and Paula Patton get ready to start filming Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol in Vancouver, Canada on Tuesday (March 1).

The 48-year-old actor and 35-year-old actress were preparing for a scene set at a crab shack in Seattle.

Anil Kapoor, a co-star in the film confirmed that MI 4 will not be shooting in India. “Tom is fascinated with India and wants to visit the country. But he isn’t coming to shoot for MI 4,” Kapoor told the Hindustan Times. But he “isn’t coming to India simply because of logistics problems.”
