Charlie Day Circling Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 16th, 2011

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s up-and-up star Charlie Day is currently in talks to join director Guillermo del Toro’s alien-invasion pic Pacific Rim. Variety reports that Day would play a professor in the film leaving the rest of the role’s details to the imagination (for the record, I’m imagining him in black-rimmed glasses). If the deal goes through, the actor would join fellow FX alum Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) who signed on to star in the project back in May. Idris Elba is also rumored to be high on Legendary’s wishlist, although his involvement is yet to be confirmed.
As a refresher, Pacific Rim is penned by Travis Beacham and is described as a monster flick set within two worlds. It seems as if Beacham’s script will involve humans manning giant robots (i.e. “mecha”) in order to protect the world(s) from said alien invasion (a thought I would find somewhat cheesy if not for del Toro’s exceptional sense of visuals). You’ll remember that del Toro took over the helm of Pacific Rim shortly after Universal failed to greenlight his R-rated version of At the Mountains of Madness. As for Day, the actor can next be seen alongside Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, and Colin Farrell in the comedy Horrible Bosses opening July 8th. http://collider.com/charlie-day-pacific-rim/96946/

Luke Evans Is Bard the Grim, Benedict Cumberbatch to Voice Smaug in THE HOBBIT

by Jason Barr   Posted: June 16th, 2011

In a bit of dual casting news, both Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes in BBC’s Sherlock) have landed roles in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. Evans will make a turn as Bard the Grim and Deadline reports that Cumberbatch will voice the dragon Smaug in Jackson’s two-part return to Tolkien which is currently in production in New Zealand. Whereas Evans’ casting comes as a bit of fresh news, rumors of Cumberbatch’s involvement began to swirl back in May when The Hobbit co-star Martin Freeman let the news accidentally slip to a BBC reporter. Per the report, Cumberbatch will take on the role of Smaug via motion capture while also providing voice work for the character Necromancer.
As for Evans, it is believed that his turn as Bard will have a larger role in the second Hobbit installment. Regardless, it is assured that he and Cumberbatch’s Smaug will not be on good terms as the story goes that Smaug was responsible for the death of Bard’s father. Evans can next be seen in Immortals and The Three Musketeers while Cumberbatch has roles in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy. Part 1 of The Hobbit is slated to hit 3D theaters in December 2012 with Part 2 coming in December 2013. In addition to Evans, Cumberbatch, and the aforementioned Freeman, The Hobbit also stars Cate Blanchett, Ian McKellan, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Andy Serkis, and Stephen Fry. http://collider.com/luke-evans-benedict-cumberbatch-the-hobbit/96940/

Annette Bening in Talks to Join Paul Dano in HE LOVES ME

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 16th, 2011

It looks like Annette is close to locking in her first role post-The Kids Are All Right. Variety reports that the actress is in negotiations to star in Fox Searchlight’s He Loves Me. The film stars Paul Dano as “a once-great novelist who is creativity blocked due to heartache and loneliness,” only to be turned around when he writes his dream girl who then comes to life. So it’s like Weird Science meets Mannequin, only super indie.
Dano’s real-life girlfriend, Zoe Kazan, wrote the screenplay and will star in the film as the dream girl. Bening is eying the role of Dano’s mother, a painter who’s worried about how much her son hates her second-husband, a dirty hippie (the answer is a lot. He hates your dirty hippie husband a lot). Little Miss Sunshine directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are helming the flick, which starts filming next month. http://collider.com/annette-bening-he-loves-me-paul-dano/96848/

Sony Pictures Classics Acquires David Cronenberg’s A DANGEROUS METHOD

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 16th, 2011

Director David Cronenberg’s latest flick, A Dangerous Method, has been picked up for distribution by Sony Pictures Classics. Based on Christopher Hampton’s 2002 play The Talking Cure, the film centers on the relationship between Carl Jung (played by Michael Fassbender), his mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen), and Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), the woman who came between them. The fantastic cast also includes Vincent Cassel. Images from the film were released late last year, giving us a preview of what’s sure to be one hell of a period film with Cronenberg at the helm. Zoe Saldana Joins Mark Ruffalo in J.J. Abrams-Produced INFINITELY POLAR BEAR

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 16th, 2011

Star Trek actress Zoe Saldana is currently in negotiations to join the cast of the marital drama Infinitely Polar Bear. Mark Ruffalo is attached to star, and J.J. Abrams is producing the flick which centers on a bipolar husband who, after going off his meds, loses his job forcing his wife to go back to work. Vulture reports that Saldana wil play Ruffalo’s wife in what they describe as “the dramatic version of Mr. Mom.”
Screenwriter Maya Forbes (Monsters vs. Aliens) is making her directorial debut on the project, which is getting some much-needed funding from investor Megan Ellison, who is also funding two of Paul Thomas Anderson’s projects. She’s like the guardian angel of movies. Infinitely Polar Bear is set to start shooting this September, before Saldana moves on to Star Trek 2. http://collider.com/zoe-saldana-infinitely-polar-bear-mark-ruffalo/96829/

Universal Eyes INSANE LAWS as Starring Vehicle for Vince Vaughn

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: March 4th, 2011

Universal is currently in negotiations to acquire a relationship comedy written by Jeremy Garelick (The Break-Up) from Columbia. Insane Laws will be set up as a starring vehicle for Vince Vaughn, who will also produce. The film “focuses on two best friends and how their lives are impacted when their grown children fall in love, with one man’s daughter becoming pregnant by his best friend’s son.” THR reports that with the original deal at Columbia, Garelick was set to make his directorial debut on the project. No word on whether Universal will keep him on as director. Neil Moritz (I Am Legend) is on board as a producer.

Elwes will play the CEO of Themyscira Industries, which is the company of Diana Prince (Adrianna Palicki). He manages the day-to-day operations while Prince goes out and fights crime as Wonder Woman and could eventually serve as the heroine's romantic interest.

Hurley will play Veronica Gale, the beautiful, highly-educated head of one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the country who is afflicted with the serious deep-seated Wonder Woman envy.

Kenneth Branagh to Direct "Boys in the Boat" Next

Posted: March 4th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Kenneth Branagh, who just wrapped production on "Thor," has signed on to direct "The Boys in the Boat," a big screen adaptation of the non-fiction book written by Daniel James Brown.

Set in the 1930s, the book centers around the University of Washington's powerhouse rowing team. Sources describe the project as a cross between "Seabiscuit" and "Chariots of Fire."

"'The Boys in The Boat' is an epic," Branagh said in a statement. "I was completely captivated by the characters, the era, and the dreams of a generation unfolding beautifully and dramatically."

Julianne Moore Joins The Cast Of Another Night With Paul Dano And Robert De Niro

published: 2011-03-04 17:33:33 Author: Eric Eisenberg
For me, one of the biggest mysteries of this past year's Oscars was that Annette Bening was nominated for her part in The Kids Are All Right over Julianne Moore, who I felt put on the more important and better performance. Regardless, Moore has never been an actress that has needed tons of awards to keep her career going (her high talent level does that for her) and no she's landed yet another part.
Variety reports that Moore is set to play in Paul Weitz's Another Night alongside Robert De Niro, Paul Dano, and Olivia Thirlby. Based on the memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City by Nick Flynn, the film is about the relationship between an estranged father and son, played by De Niro and Dano, who interact while the son is working at a homeless shelter in Boston. Moore will play Dano's mother and will only be seen in flashback sequences.

Julianne Moore's involvement alone is enough to make me think that this may be the first great movie De Niro has done in years. Weitz doesn't have the greatest track record - he was responsible for Little Fockers - but with this cast and the Boston setting, it sounds like it will be hard to argue against.

Meek's Cutoff Trailer: Go On The Oregon Trail With Michelle Williams

published: 2011-02-25 18:23:45 Author: Eric Eisenberg
What's better than the fact that we might be right in the middle of a western revolution spearheaded by movies like True Grit, Rango and Cowboys & Aliens? We are about to get a western with Michelle Williams, Paul Dano and Bruce Greenwood in a glorious, glorious beard.

Apple has premiered the first trailer for Meek's Cutoff, which you may remember hearing about when the awesome first poster came online last week. Set during the early days of the Oregon Trail (everyone quickly remember their middle school computer classes), the film tells the story of three families who find themselves lost in the middle of the desert. Upon meeting a Native American that says that he can help them, however, they don't know who to trust.

Check out the trailer below or in HD over on Apple.

Kate Mara And Treat Williams Join Cast Of Indie Crime Drama Blackbird

published: 2011-02-25 16:29:21 Author: Katey Rich
Kate Mara and Treat Williams are co-stars in one of this year's Best Picture nominees, but I bet I could give you 5 minutes and you wouldn't be able to remember which one. The two are among the actors glimpsed briefly and memorably in 127 Hours, Mara as one of the female hikers Aron Ralston runs into just before getting trapped beneath a boulder, and Williams as the father glimpsed in flashbacks. Mara and Williams were likely never near the set together, but now they'll get the chance to work together properly. Variety reports that they've both signed on for Blackbird, the indie crime thriller formerly known as Kin that also stars Eric Bana, Olivia Wilde, Sissy Spacey, Kris Kristofferson and Charlie Hunnam.

Hunnam is the main character, a boxer recently released from prison; Spacey and Kristofferson play his parents, Bana and Wilde are a pair of fugitives who cross his path, and Mara and Williams will play a father-daughter team who run into him as well. Austrian director Stefan Ruzowitzky, who made the surprise Best Foreign Language Film Oscar winner The Counterfeiters, will be making his English-language debut with the film, which starts production next month in Montreal. It's a seriously impressive cast, especially for a director so new, though it'll be interesting to see if Ruzowitzky can wrangle what sounds like a lot of plot threads. Then again everyone thought 127 Hours was way too challenging to work, and Mara and Williams know firsthand how that turned out.

Jeff Daniels, Piper Perabo, and Noah Segan Join LOOPER

by Jason Barr    Posted: January 21st, 2011

In a bit of early morning casting news, Variety is confirming that Jeff Daniels, Piper Perabo (USA’s Covert Affairs), and Noah Segan (The Brothers Bloom) have joined Rian Johnson’s (also of The Brothers Bloom) sci-fi/action film Looper.  The three join a cast that already includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, and Paul Dano.
While the details of their newly acquired roles are currently unspecified, we do know that Looper is set to go in front of cameras later this month and that Primer writer/director Shane Carruth is working on some of the film’s time-travel effects.  For those unaware, Looper is set in the near future and tells the story of an organized group of killers (known as “Loopers”) who go back in time, take out pre-determined targets, and then dispose of them as if they never existed.  The film, which I’m eagerly anticipating, is currently looking at a 2012 release.

Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg Are Father and Son in I HATE YOU DAD

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: January 13th, 2011

Adam Sandler is in talks to play Andy Samberg’s father in I Hate You Dad though less than twelve years separate their ages in real life. According to THR, “The story centers on a father who moves in on the eve of his son’s wedding and promptly begins feuding with the bride-to-be.”  Columbia Pictures first picked up the project in August 2008 from a script by David Caspe that has since been rewritten by David Wain and Ken Marino (Role Models).
I Hate You Dad is one of several possible starring vehicles for Sandler including Narco, The $40,000 Man, and Valet Guys with Kevin James.  Sandler will next be seen in Just Go With It opposite Jennifer Aniston (February 11th), followed by Jack and Jill opposite Adam Sandler in drag later in the year.  Samberg has supporting roles in the upcoming big screen comedies Friends With Benefits and What’s Your Number.
With all due respect to Kevin James, Samberg/Sandler is a more exciting comedic prospect if only thanks to the novelty.  And that’s before you factor in the invigorating potential of a script from Wain and Marino.

Paul Dano Gets ANOTHER NIGHT

by Jason Barr    Posted: January 13th, 2011

Paul Dano has landed a starring role in Oscar-nominated writer/director Paul Weitz’s (About a BoyAnother Night.  Dano will co-star alongside Robert De Niro in the film which Weitz has adapted from Nick Flynn’s 2004 memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City.  Per Variety, Another Night will tell the story of a writer who runs into his homeless father while working at a Boston shelter.  Though the report makes no mention, it seems safe to assume that Dano and De Niro will make turns as son and father, respectively.
In addition to Another Night, Dano can also be seen this summer in Jon Favreau’s action/sci-fi flick Cowboys & Aliens and in 2012 alongside Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon Levitt in Rian Johnson’s (The Brothers Bloom) sci-fi film Looper.  As for Another Night, the project (now at Focus Features) was originally set up at Fox 2000 under the title Suck City with Casey Affleck rumored to in the role now occupied by Dano.  To check out the synopsis for the source material, hit the jump.
Here’s a synopsis for Nick Flynn’s 2004 memoir, Another Bullshit Night in Suck City [from Amazon]:
Flynn’s wayward father, a self-styled writer and ex-con, describes his life on Boston’s streets as “another bullshit night in Suck City”: he hangs out in ATM lobbies, stuffs his coat with newspaper and is often “still drunk from the night before.” This biting memoir describes the years poet Flynn (Some EtherBlind Huber) spent, in his late 20s, working at one of the city’s homeless shelters, where his path crisscrossed with his down-and-out father’s. In examining their troublesome relationship, Flynn admits to feeling lost, as he turned to alcohol and came close to being on the other side of the shelter admissions booth himself.

Steve Has Seen The Coen Brothers’ TRUE GRIT; Some Thoughts and a Video Blog

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: December 1st, 2010

In the late 90’s, I used to watch Pedro Martinez pitch for the Boston Red Sox.  While he’d always been a decent pitcher, starting in ‘97, he was in the zone, striking out batters with such ease that everyone knew they were watching something special.  It got to be that his dates on the mound were circled on calendars and people cleared their schedules to make sure they could watch.
Which brings me to the latest Coen Brothers movie, True Grit.
For the past few years, moviegoers have been witness to an incredible streak of brilliant movies from the Coens, starting with No Country For Old Men in 2007, and continuing with Burn After Reading, A Serious Man, and now their latest work of genius, True Grit.  Like Pedro Martinez in the 90’s, the brothers are throwing fastball after fastball and they’re making it look far too easy.  And they’re doing it every year.  If you’re a movie nerd, you know how difficult it is to make one great movie, let alone four in four years.  Much more after the jump:

Before going any further, if you’re not familiar with True Grit, it’s a western that stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Barry Pepper and Hailee Steinfeld.   Here’s the trailer:
-
true_grit_movie_poster_01Here’s the thing: Since True Grit doesn’t get released until the end of December, I’m unwilling to go into too many specifics about the plot.  I walked into the theater knowing very little as I hadn’t read Charles Portis’ 1968 novel, and I’d never seen the original John Wayne movie from 1969.  And even though some of you might have either read the book or seen the original film, I’d imagine the large majority of moviegoers are going to walk in like I did.  If you do, you can look forward to the same reaction I had while watching: loving every second of it.  On top of that, if you’re a fan of westerns, get ready for a cup of fried gold, as the Coens have again proven they can work in any genre and tell any story.
And this is the problem with writing about the Coen brothers–you’re stuck with the same superlatives that you use all the time:  genius, brilliant, awesome, amazing, dazzling…you get where this is going.  They’ve once again made one of the best films of the year and it’s something you should be excited to see.  It’s definitely on my top ten.
Anyhow, since Peter from Slashfilm was at the same advance screening as me, we recorded a video blog the other night.  The only thing to know is I was in Boston and had to use my laptop video camera.  Meaning the quality is pretty bad.  But you can hear us, which is all that really counts:
And for the people that didn’t watch the video, here’s a few things that stand out in True Grit:
Hailee Steinfeld.  The entire movie is about her character trying to get revenge on the man who killed her father.  She plays a 14 year old girl in the late 1800’s and she delivers one of the best “kid” performances I’ve seen in a long time.  There are scenes where she’s acting against Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon and she easily holds her own.
Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon.  Both are brilliant for different reasons.  I don’t want to spoil how Damon plays his character, but his choices are perfect and he again demonstrates why he’s one of the best actors working today.  Bridges, on the other hand, is in the majority of the film and he’s phenomenal as Marshal Reuben J. Cogburn – the person Hailee Steinfeld hires to kill the man who murdered her father.  If he hadn’t won an Oscar last year for Crazy Heart, this role might have done it.  Either way, I can see both actors getting Oscar nominations.
Roger Deakins.  If you’re a film nerd, you knew this was coming.  As the director of photography for a lot of the Coen Brothers films, most have seen his work behind the camera.  He’s helped make some of their films so memorable.  Look at his resume.  He’s one of the best in the world.  Anyway, in True Grit, he makes a long gone era feel new and real.
Production Design/Costumes/Etc. – Every aspect impressed me.  There are some scenes towards the beginning of the film that you’ll think you’ve been transported back in time as Steinfeld walks around.  So impressed.
The script. I don’t know how the Coen Brothers continue to churn out phenomenal script and script, but I’m so thankful they do.  As you would imagine with this being a Coen film, you’re going to have plenty of great moments that you didn’t see coming.  I really want to talk about some specific things…but I’m holding back as I don’t want to ruin any aspect of the film.
Final Thoughts
If you’re a fan of westerns, the Coen brothers, any of the actors in the film, or just great movies, True Grit should be on your list to see this holiday season.  It’s one of my favorites of the year and brilliant on so many levels.  I wish I could talk about a few of the specific things that I loved, but I don’t want to ruin any of the twists and turns. My advice is to see True Grit as soon as possible.  You’ll be happy you did.
True Grit opens December 22 at theaters everywhere.

Paul Dano Joins Rian Johnson’s LOOPER

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 1st, 2010

Paul Dano is in talks to join the cast of Looper, the new film from writer-director Rian Johnson (Brick, The Brothers Bloom).  The plot takes place in a world where a crime syndicate can send their enemies back in time and a group of killers known as “loopers” eliminate those enemies, so there’s no evidence of the murder in the crime syndicate’s present time.  The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as “Joe”, a looper, Bruce Willis as the older version of Gordon-Levitt’s character, and Emily Blunt.
Variety doesn’t say what role Dano would be playing, but according to The Playlist, he’s playing a looper named Seth.  The Playlist adds that while it’s not a brief role, it’s a key part of the movie and that Dano’s a perfect pick for the job.  Shooting is scheduled to begin in Louisiana early next year.  Seeing as I’ve loved both of Johnson’s previous films, I’m excited out of my mind to see what he’ll do with Looper.

Director Jon Favreau Breaks Down the COWBOYS & ALIENS Teaser Trailer with Video Commentary

In a neat feature, Jon Favreau breaks down the  recently released (and very cool) teaser trailer for Cowboys & Aliens in a video commentary.  Favreau is appropriately self-deprecating (“Let’s look back on the fond memories of the Cowboys & Aliens trailer”), but shares some interesting tidbits.  For instance, the opening of the trailer is the first shot of the film, and the wire you see yanking a cowboy into the air is not a goof, but a device that the aliens use to abduct their prey.
Favreau stuck around to answer a few additional questions, including how they approached the mashup of sci-fi and Westerns, and how Harrison Ford came to be in the film.  Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Noah Ringer, Paul Dano, Keith Carradine, and Sam Rockwell also star.Hit the jump to check out the clips.

“Every Genre Has Its Own Set Of Rules”
“The Cowboys & Aliens Trailer Is Just A Teaser”
Harrison Ford Casting Was “A Long Shot”
Cowboys & Aliens opens July 29, 2011.  Here’s the official synopsis:
1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde. It’s a town that lives in fear.
But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.
Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella, he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents – townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors – all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

Teaser Trailer for COWBOYS & ALIENS Starring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, and Olivia Wilde

A couple days ago, the teaser poster for Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens went online.  Now we have the teaser trailer for the film.  If you saw the footage they played at Comic-Con, then a lot of this trailer will look familiar.  If you weren’t one of the 6,000 people sitting in Hall H that day, then don’t worry: what they showed us was bad-ass.  Despite the silly title, this trailer confirms what I’ve heard about the movie playing both the western and the sci-fi elements completely straight.  I don’t know how that will play with a populace that seems to crave irony at every turn, but I like the confidence and the willingness to try something original.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Directed by Jon Favreau, Cowboys & Aliens stars Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Adam Beach, Paul Dano, and Noah Ringer.  It opens July 29, 2011.

Rumor: Tom Hardy to Play Villain Dr. Hugo Strange in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 17th, 2010

Because Christopher Nolan likes keeping his projects as secret as nuclear launch codes, there’s been heavy speculation over who Tom Hardy will play in The Dark Knight Rises.  Nolan apparently thinks that if we know who Hardy is playing now instead of a few months from now when it’s inevitably revealed, our enjoyment of the film will be absolutely destroyed.  However, it’s okay to rumor-monger to our heart’s content and the rumor du jour is that Hardy is playing Dr. Hugo Strange, one of the film’s villains.  As we previously reported, the other villain will be a woman.
If you don’t know much about Strange, that’s okay.  He’s not one of Batman’s more famous rogues.  Hit the jump for a crash course in this potential nemesis.

According to Wikipedia, Strange has actually been around since 1940 and was one of Batman’s first recurring villains.  He’s a villain in the mad-scientist mold and possesses genius-level IQ and is a master of psychology.  In the comics mythology, Strange learned Batman’s secret identity but kept it to himself.  He eventually becomes obsessed with Batman, even going to the point where he starts dressing up like the Caped Crusader.
Keep in mind, Hugo Strange as the film’s villain is just a rumor at this point, although the folks over at Batman-News say that their source is reliable and knew that The Riddler wouldn’t be the villain and that Rachel Weisz and Anne Hathaway were in the running for the lead female role.
Assuming this is true, what are your thoughts on Strange being the villain?  Do you think Hardy is right for the role?  And if it’s false, who do you hope the villain will be?  Sound off in the comment section.
