A new trailer for director Lone Scherfig’s (An Education) adaptation of One Day has been released. The film stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, and centers on two friends who continue to meet on July 15th–the anniversary of the day they met at their college graduation–over the course of twenty years. While the first trailer wasn’t great, the international trailer and this new trailer show some promise. I’m intrigued by the story, and Scherfig’s proven her talent behind the camera.

Kerry Washington On The Shortlist For Lead Female Role In Django Unchained

published: 2011-06-23 13:23:27 Author: Katey Rich
Amid the flurry of stories confirming yesterday that Jamie Foxx is probably the star of Quentin Tarantino's next film Django Unchained, it was easy to miss one intriguing detail in Variety. They report that Kerry Washington has met with Tarantino, and is one of the top contenders to play Broomhilda, the wife of the titular character Django who's been kidnapped by her owner, to be played by Leonardo DiCaprio. There aren't a ton of African American actresses as famous as Foxx, DiCaprio or co-star Christoph Waltz , or in the right age range to play Foxx's wife, so it makes sense that Washington would pop up on the list.

And yet, it's also really exciting to see her in contention. Washington is one of those actresses who's ridiculously talented but who flies so often under the radar, thanks to strong performances in underseen movies like Mother and Child, Night Catches Us and For Colored Girls, and the general challenge of being an African-American actress in an industry that still skews heavily white. I'm curious about who else might be meeting with Tarantino for the part-- maybe Washington's For Colored Girls co-star Anika Noni Rose, or an unknown actress?-- but without even having read the widely circulated script, I'm dying to see Washington take on the challenge.

New Trailer and Images for KILLER ELITE Starring Jason Statham, Clive Owen, and Robert De Niro

Open Road Films has released new images and the first trailer for the Jason Statham actioner Killer Elite.  It has everything a man could want: guns, explosions, a bikini butt closeup, “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” Clive Owen’s mustache… the list goes on.  I kid, mostly — the trailer is a blast.  Killer Elite looks like a treat for fans of pure action.
Statham plays an ex-special ops agent lured out of retirement to rescue his mentor, played by Robert De Niro: “To make the rescue, he must complete a near-impossible mission of killing three tough-as-nails assassins with a cunning leader (Owen).”  Yvonne Strahovski and Dominic Purcell also star.  Directed by Gary McKendry, Killer Elite hits theaters on September 23.  Hit the jump for the trailer and images.  http://collider.com/killer-elite-trailer-images/98180/

Viggo Mortensen to Star in THE TWO FACES OF JANUARY, the Directorial Debut of Hossein Amini

by Brendan Bettinger  Posted: June 22nd, 2011

Viggo Mortensen passed on Snow White and the Huntsman right around the time Hossein Amini entered negotiations to rewrite the script.  I suspect their paths crossed, as in the months since, Amini and Mortensen teamed to develop an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s The Two Faces of January.  The 1964 novel is a suspense thriller that centers on an American con artist, his wife, and a stranger in travelling in Athens.  A source tells 24 Frames Mortensen would assume one of the three starring roles, and this is intended to be the directorial debut of Amini.
Amini wields a powerful calling card right now with Drive — by all accounts from Cannes and LAFF, Drive is amazing.  We peons only have to wait three months for the September 16 theatrical release.  Cronenberg will next be seen playing Sigmund Freud in David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method, assuming it gets the late 2011 release we expect.  The first trailer, released yesterday, is wonderfully deranged.

Tom Wilkinson in Talks to Join THE LONE RANGER

by Jason Barr   Posted: June 22nd, 2011

Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton) is in talks to join Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s adaptation of The Lone Ranger. Per Variety, the two-time Oscar nominee would take on the “prominent” role of a railroad tycoon. If the deal goes through, Wilkinson would join a cast that already includes Armie Hammer in the title slot and Johnny Depp as his sidekick, Tonto. Gore Verbinski (Rango) is directing the pic which is scheduled to begin shooting after Depp finishes Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows adaptation and Hammer wraps Tarsem Singh’s (Immortals) untitled Snow White pic alongside Julia Roberts.
The Lone Ranger script comes courtesy of Ted Elliot, Terry Rossio, and Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road). In addition to his potential role in Lone Ranger, the usually excellent Wilkinson can next be seen alongside Helen Mirren and Sam Worthington in director John Madden’s (Shakespeare in Love) drama/thriller The Debt which is due out on August 31st. The thesp also signed on to join Samuel L. Jackson in the indie thriller The Samaritan back in April.

Emma Stone Offered Lead in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES

by Jason Barr   Posted: June 22nd, 2011

After testing the waters with Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska, and Scarlett Johansson, Lionsgate has offered the female lead in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to Emma Stone. Heat Vision reports on the offer to play Elizabeth Bennet, a zombie-killing heroine who sees her quest to save England from the undead made more difficult by the arrival of Fitzwilliam Darcy. The role was originally filled by Natalie Portman and has been vacant since the Oscar-winning actress decided to act solely in a producing capacity on the pic. Craig Gillespie (Fright Night remake) will direct Pride from an updated script by Fright Night scribe Marti Noxon.
For more on the project, hit the jump to check out a synopsis of Seth Grahame-Smith’s book which the film will adapt. If Stone accepts Lionsgate’s offer, Pride would be another high-profile pic for the actress who recently wrapped director Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man. Jamie Foxx Confirmed for Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 22nd, 2011

Earlier today, we reported on the tweet rumor that Jamie Foxx had landed the title role in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming Django Unchained. We now have confirmation on the matter as Variety reports that Foxx will indeed star in the pic alongside Leonard DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, and most likely Samuel L. Jackson as well. As has been well documented, Tarantino originally offered the surefire controversial part to Will Smith. After Smith passed, the writer/director met with Idris Elba, Terrence Howard, and Chris Tucker before offering the gig to Foxx.
For those unaware, Django Unchained centers on a freed slave (Foxx) who joins forces with a German bounty hunter (Waltz) as part of a plan to save the former’s love from an evil plantation owner (DiCaprio). The film is slated to hit theaters on December 25th, 2012. As for Foxx, the Oscar-winner can next be seen alongside Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Jason Sudeikis, and Charlie Day in the comedy Horrible Bosses opening July 8th.

Jamie Foxx to Replace Will Smith in Tarantino's "Django Unchained"

Posted: June 14th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

We recently learned that Will Smith was the frontrunner to star in Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained." But now comes word that Smith may pass on the role, because Jamie Foxx is now in talks to replace him.

If cast, Foxx will play Django, a freed slave who seeks to reunite with his slave wife, a journey that will see him team with a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) to take down an evil plantation owner Monsieur Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).

Idris Elba and Samuel L. Jackson are also attached, while DiCaprio is officially on board. The plan is to begin filming this fall.

Jamie Foxx Latest Actor Rumored For Django Unchained, Possibly Replacing Will Smith

published: 2011-06-14 12:50:35 Author: Katey Rich
Any new Quentin Tarantino project will be subject of a lot of rumors, but the speculation has been especially crazy around Django Unchained, the new QT project that probably will star Will Smith, or hey, unless it's Idris Elba, or maybe Chris Tucker could get the part. The story about an escaped slave taking vengeance on his evil master (probably to be played by Leonardo DiCaprio-- that's one rumor that seems to be for real) now has a new name circling: Jamie Foxx.

As reported by Showbiz 411 Foxx is now in the running for the part; it's unclear if that news came from Samuel L. Jackson, who chatted with 411's Roger Friedman at the Tonys, or from some other unspecified source. The same source also said that Leonardo DiCaprio is confirmed for the film, but again, having no idea who the source is it's hard to know how much we should trust them. So take this all as just more fodder for the rumor mill for now.

Foxx, though… that's an interesting thought. The actor's career has been all over the place since he won an Oscar for Ray back in 2005, with starring roles in Miami Vice and The Soloist not really going anywhere and bit parts in Valentine's Day and Due Date failing to garner much attention for him individually. Working with Tarantino would be a huge change of pace for Foxx, but the director has been able to work magic with all kinds of actors you'd never expect to cross his radar. I still think Will Smith could benefit most from a QT career revival, but if he falls out for some reason, Foxx is a fascinating second choice.

Paul Rudd's New Our Idiot Brother Trailer Makes A Case For Legalizing Pot

published: 2011-06-14 17:46:11 Author: Josh Tyler
Here’s a new trailer for Our Idiot Brother, and along the way to making this movie seem like a must see, it also makes a pretty good case for how ridiculous it is that we’re actually still locking up people for smoking marijuana.

In the film Paul Rudd plays a harmless, lovable, stoner whose insistence on kindness, honesty, and thinking the best of everyone lands him in jail for possession. He gets out and ends up going to live with his sisters, all of whom are endlessly frustrated by his kindhearted ways.

Watch the latest trailer for Our Idiot Brother below or in HD on Yahoo.

There’s a point in this trailer where Rudd’s siblings, played by Zooey Deschanel and Elizabeth Banks, get together and wish they could love things as much as their brother does. Answer: You can. All you need is a bong and a healthy resistance to the side effects of paranoia. Write your congressman now. Thanks Our Idiot Brother, for making me wish I could smoke out.

Our Idiot Brother arrives in theaters August 26th. For more in the movie visit our page in the Blend Film Database.

New Poster for STRAW DOGS Breaks James Marsden’s Glasses

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: June 14th, 2011

straw-dogs-poster-slice
I have yet to see the 1971 Straw Dogs (it’s on my Before I Turn 30 list), but I love that poster.  The image of Dustin Hoffman in the broken glasses tells me everything I need to know about the film, a thriller about a man pushed to the edge of reason when they move to a small village where the locals prove anything but hospitable.
James Marsden fills in for Hoffman in the upcoming remake, and now dons the broken glasses for a remake of the iconic poster.  There are a few twists: Screen Gems found a way to get Alexander Skarsgård’s beautiful Swedish face in the picture and added the slogan “Everyone has a breaking point.”  The image can’t be as powerful four decades later, but this is smarter than your average poster.  Kate Bosworth also stars in Straw Dogs, opening on September 16.  See the new poster and its inspiration after the jump. http://collider.com/straw-dogs-poster/96490/

Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED Opens Christmas Day 2012

by Brendan Bettinger   Posted: June 14th, 2011

How cool is your family?  For instance, if the new Quentin Tarantino movie opened on Christmas Day, would you have to ditch the folks for a couple hours, or could you bring them along?  The Weinstein Company will put these family ties to the test with a December 25, 2012 release date for Django Unhcained [Box Office Mojo].  The supporting cast is mostly set: Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, and Leonardo DiCaprio are all on board or about to be barring any sticking points in negotiations.  Much less certain is who will play Django, the freed slave taught the tricks of the trade by a German bounty hunter (Waltz) to liberate his wife from an evil plantation owner (DiCaprio).  Will Smith was the early frontrunner, though a deal has not come easy.  More recently, Idris Elba, Chris Tucker, and Jamie Foxx came up as possible DjangosShowbiz 411 hears Foxx is the closest to the role, but all is heresay until it’s in the trades.  Production is scheduled for later this summer or early fall — with the finish line in place, we’ll meet our Django soon enough.
Christmas Day is a Tuesday in 2012.  As of this writing, Django Unchained has the holiday all to itself, but Hunter Killer, Life of Pi, and The Lone Ranger open the Friday before, December 21.

Relativity to Distribute MACHINE GUN PREACHER This Fall; Paramount Picks Up Comedy Spec BASTARDS

by Brendan Bettinger   Posted: June 14th, 2011

Lionsgate had tentative plans to release Machine Gun Preacher in the fall, but three other films — Warrior, Abduction, and Safe — will occupy the studio’s resources with September/October release dates.  Relativity’s fall is lighter, with Shark Night 3D in September and Immortals in November — as newcomers to distribution, the studio is eager for product to push.  The schedules worked out such that, per Risky Business, Lionsgate will hand off the domestic release for Machine Gun Preacher to Relativity.  (Lionsgate will still handle international distribution.)  Gerard Butler and Michelle Monaghan in the biopic about Sam Childers, “a drug-dealing biker who found God and became an activist on behalf of child soldiers in Sudan.  Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace) directed the $30 million independent production from a script by Jason Keller.  No official release date is set, but Machine Gun Preacher is still on the agenda for Fall 2011.

David O. Russell Circling MALEFICENT, Talks About Upcoming Projects and Why He Left UNCHARTED

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 14th, 2011

When a director is coming off an Oscar nomination, or better yet a win, he or she automatically has some clout in choosing his or her next project.  It’s a tough decision, and you may only get once chance, so you best choose wisely. David O. Russell, coming off his Oscar nomination for The Fighter, seems to be circling 1,000 projects at the moment, and another one has just been added to the list.  THR reports that Russell is currently one of the directors being considered to helm Disney’s fantasy flick Maleficent. Angelina Jolie is attached to star, and Tim Burton was previously set to direct before backing out last month.
Disney is looking at a number of directors for the job (Darren Aronofsky and David Yates have been mentioned) and Russell has plenty on his plate already, so this deal is far from a sure thing, but it appears Russell is on the list of candidates.  The Fighter director recently dropped out as director of Uncharted, and today he explained a bit about why he left that project.  Hit the jump to check out what he had to say, which includes updates on a number of his upcoming projects. http://collider.com/david-o-russell-maleficent-uncharted/96494/

Akiva Schaffer May Direct NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH With Ben Stiller Circling Starring Role

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: June 14th, 2011

It looks like The Lonely Island member and Hot Rod director Akiva Schaffer may next helm a high-profile sci-fi comedy. Schaffer, who currently serves as a writer on SNL, has been offered the director’s chair on Fox’s long-in-development comedy Neighborhood Watch. Heat Vision reports that Schaffer has the offer, and that Ben Stiller is circling one of the starring roles. The plot revolves around a suburban neighborhood watch group that serves as a front for some dads just wanting some time away from their families. You know, for fantasy baseball and such. Things go awry, however, when the stumble upon a plot to destroy the world.
Originally, Peter Segal (50 First Dates) was going to direct the flick, but it appears that he’s now left the project. Last we heard, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg had come aboard to perform a rewrite of the script. Hit the jump for more. http://collider.com/akiva-schaffer-neighborhood-watch-ben-stiller/96438/

Leonardo DiCaprio Is Closer to Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED Than Will Smith; Idris Elba, Chris Tucker, Jamie Foxx Rumored for Django

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: June 7th, 2011

No actor is officially confirmed for Django Unchained, the latest from Quentin Tarantino, but the cast is starting to take shape. According to Deadline, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson are expected to sign on.  Leonardo DiCaprio is about to enter negotiations to play the villain, . That doesn’t give us the titular character, though.  Will Smith was the first major contender for the role of Django, “a slave who is liberated and taught the tricks of the trade by a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter (Waltz).”  Negotiations are stuck in first gear, and we’re probably kidding ourselves to expect the super image-conscious Smith to sign on for such a gleefully controversial role.
Deadline hears Smith likely won’t sign on; possible replacements include Idris Elba, Chris Tucker, and Jamie Foxx.  That’s an eclectic list, somewhere between intriguing and Name Three Black Actors Who Aren’t Will Smith That Headlined Box Office Hits in the Past Decade.  More after the jump: http://collider.com/leonardo-dicaprio-chris-tucker-django-unchained/95282/

Reese Witherspoon to Produce and Possibly Star in DreamWorks’ WHO INVITED HER?

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 7th, 2011

DreamWorks has emerged victorious from a bidding war for novelist Sascha Rothchild’s comedy pitch Who Invited Her? with Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon set to produce and potentially star. Variety reports that the project centers on a woman who invites herself to a male bachelor party weekend and will purportedly follow the shenanigans that inevitably ensue. If Witherspoon does indeed end up in Who Invited Her?, it will not be the first starring/producing double-duty pulled by the actress as she is also filling both shoes on the upcoming action/comedy This Means War also starring Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. In addition to her work on Who Invited Her?, Rothchild is also writing and executive producing an adaptation of her book How to Get Divorced by 30 over at Universal. http://collider.com/reese-witherspoon-who-invited-her/95248/

Chris O’Dowd, Lena Dunham, Charlyne Yi and Wyatt Russell Join Judd Apatow’s KNOCKED UP Spin-Off

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 7th, 2011

Judd Apatow is filling out the cast for his next directorial effort, with Bridesmaids star Chris O’Dowd, Lena Dunham (director of Tiny Furniture), Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up) and Wyatt Russell currently in negotiations to join the untitled ensemble comedy. Written by Apatow, the film is a spinoff of sorts from his 2007 comedy Knocked Up, focusing on Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann’s characters. Variety reports that O’Dowd and Dunham will play employees of Rudd’s indie record company, Russell will portray a hockey player, and Yi will reprise her role as Jodi from Knocked Up.
The cast for the untitled comedy currently includes Rudd, Mann, Megan Fox and Albert Brooks. O’Dowd is just coming off the massive success of the Apatow-produced Bridesmaids. His turn as Wiig’s love interest in the film has him fielding a flood of offers, and deservedly so. No other plot details on Apatow’s flick are known at the moment, but it’s set to be released in December 2012.

Craig Mazin to Write THE HANGOVER PART III
by Matt Goldberg Posted: May 31st, 2011
The Hangover Part II co-writer Craig Mazin has been hired to write the script for The Hangover Part III. Warner Bros. is wasting no time in moving forward on a sequel to the box-office record-breaker and I’m honestly a little surprised that they hadn’t already started moving on a new film when the Hangover 2 was tracking through the roof. Mazin, whose previous credits include Scary Movie 3 and 4, co-wrote The Hangover Part II with director Todd Phillips and screenwriter Scot Armstrong (Semi-Pro), although “wrote” may not be the best way to describe it. I’m not sure if copy-pasting the script from the first film and making minor changes counts as “writing”.

When Steve spoke with Phillips during the press junket for Hangover Part II, Phillips said that Part III would be the finale to the series but would be a new template and a new idea. Hit the jump for his full quote. [The Tracking Board via The Wrap].

Rumor: Leonardo DiCaprio and Idris Elba Circling Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED?
by Matt Goldberg Posted: May 31st, 2011
Tarantino fans are hungry for any information regarding his next film, Django Unchained. However, while deals are still being done, we’re all left to wonder how the film will be cast. We already know that Christoph Waltz will play a bounty hunter who mentors an escaped slave named Django and then teams up with him to free Django’s wife from an evil plantation owner. Rumors are now springing forth from the Twitter about casting for Django and the plantation owner, Calvin Candie. Yesterday, tweets from Idris Elba hinted (in the vaguest of terms) that he might be playing Django even though Will Smith was tipped as Tarantino’s top choice for the role. Today, Creative Screenwriting magazine Senior Editor Jeff Goldsmith tweeted

“Casting Rumor: Leonardo DiCaprio WILL play villian [sic] Calvin Candie in [Quentin] Tarantino‘s “Django Unchained”! QT wanted him for [Inglourious Basterds] & now has him!”

Jamie Campbell Bower Play Jace Wayland in THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS
by Matt Goldberg Posted: May 31st, 2011
A couple weeks ago, we reported that Jamie Campbell Bower (The Twilight Saga: New Moon), Ed Speleers (Eragon), and Leebo Freeman were all in the running for the male lead in Scott Charles Stewart’s adaptation of the young adult book series The Mortal Instruments. Deadline is now reporting that Bower has won that race and will play Jace Wayland. Jace is a member of a group known as “Shadowhunters” who are warriors devoted to ridding the world of demons. The book’s protagonist Clary Fray (played by Lily Collins and I swear I’m not making up these character names) witnesses a murder and is eventually drawn into the world of the Shadowhunters. In the synopsis, Jace is described as “a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk.” Is the tagline for this movie going to be “This totally isn’t anything like Twilight, but if you liked Twilight, you should see this movie.”

The first image from Timur Bekmambetov’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has gone online.  In case you couldn’t get the plot from the title, the movie is about America’s 16th President secret life as a vampire slayer.  Based off the book by Seth Grahame-Smith, the story re-imagines that Lincoln’s mother and grandfather were killed by a vampire and that the president’s resolve to end slavery was due in part to the “fact” that vampires were involved with the slave trade.  However, he also learns that there are good vampires and bad vampires and that he can’t simply just kill them all willy-nilly.
Hit the jump for the image and to learn how the production is devoted to historical accuracy in this incredibly silly story.  The film stars Benjamin Walker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anthony Mackie, Dominic Cooper, Alan Tudyk, Jimmi Simpson, and Refus Sewell.  Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter opens in 3D on June 22, 2012.

The Weinstein Company and Quentin Tarantino have selected Sony Pictures to internationally distribute Django Unchained.  While Universal, which handled foreign distribution for Inglourious Basterds, lobbied hard for the film, sources tell Deadline that the movie went to Sony in an effort to sign Will Smith to the lead role.  Smith has a long history with the studio dating back to 1997’s Men in Black, and as we reported on Friday, Tarantino has offered Smith the role of slave-turned-bounty-hunter Django.  The project is being billed as a “Southern”, taking the tropes of a Western and transplanting them to the American south as an attempt to look at the region’s ugly history of racism and slavery.
The role would certainly be a far cry from Smith’s upcoming film, Men in Black III, and a huge risk for the actor, but it would be unlike anything else he’s ever done in his career.  If Smith signs on, he’ll join Christoph Waltz who plays a German bounty hunter that trains Django and assists him in his quest to free his enslaved wife from a plantation owner.

Rob Marshall to Direct Johnny Depp in Remake of THE THIN MAN; John DeLuca to Produce

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 9th, 2011

Last year, we reported that Johnny Depp wanted to reunite with his Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall for a new adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s The Thin Man.  We have now received a press release confirming that Marshall is on board to direct and that John DeLuca (Nine) will produce through the duo’s LUCAMAR Productions company.  While I was hoping that Marshall would direct the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked, it’s possible that the project is stuck so far down in development hell that there’s no way anyone can get to it.  And that being said, Marshall is a talented director and I think Depp is a great fit for detective-turned-socialite Nick Charles.
Now the questions become “When will this shoot in relation to The Lone Ranger?” and “Which actress would make a good Nora Charles?”  Hit the jump for the press release.

Joaquin Phoenix Joins Paul Thomas Anderson’s Untitled Religious Drama; The Weinstein Company to Distribute Film Worldwide

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 9th, 2011

After looking rather dead last September, Paul Thomas Anderson’s untitled religious drama was resurrected this past February when producer Megan Ellison (True Grit) and her Annapurna Productions came on board to finance the picture.  Deadline now reports that Joaquin Phoenix has been confirmed play Freddie Sutton, an alcoholic drifter who becomes right-hand man to Lancaster Dodd, a charismatic intellectual known as The Master (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, who’s been attached to the film from the beginning). Earlier drafts of the story were overtly based on Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, but that has reportedly changed.   According to Deadline, “[Anderson] has greatly overhauled the script and now, Hoffman stars as a man who returns after witnessing the horrors of WWII and tries to rediscover who he is in post-war America. He creates a belief system, something that catches on with other lost souls.”
Deadline is also reporting that Anderson is now considering actresses Madisen Beaty (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) Amy Adams, Lena Endre (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), and Laura Dern for roles in the film.  Hit the jump for more details on this exciting production.

Trailer for Miranda July’s THE FUTURE

The trailer for Miranda July’s The Future has gone online.  As I said in my review when I caught the film at Sundance, it’s a strange movie and that’s a large part of its charm.  The trailer does a good job of conveying the oddness of some of the plot’s elements (shelter cat as a narrator, talking moon), the offbeat humor of the main characters (played by July and Hamish Linklater), as well as the honest emotions that prevent the movie from being just a pile of quirk.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The Future opens July 29th.

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you today. First up, Vincent D’Onofrio, Chelsea Handler and Eric Bogoslan will star in an adaptation of Bogoslan’s novel Mall, the directorial debut of Linkin Park’s Joe Hahn. Deadline reports that the film will tell the intersecting stories of five suburbanites: “a stoner teen, a restless housewife, a voyeuristic businessman, a mall security guard and a trigger-happy crystal meth addict who heads to the mall looking for trouble.” Handler will play the dark role of the housewife, D’Onofrio will take on the voyeuristic businessman, and Bogoslan is set to play a store owner. Hahn has directed a number of Linkin Park’s music videos.

The film stars David Boreanaz, Stephen Dorff, Dominic Purcell (Prison Break) and AnnaLynne McCord (90210) and centers on a doctor and security guard who live out each other’s daytime lives in their dreams at night. The security guard murders his wife, but is then hit by a car and is brought in to the hospital that he doctor works at, where they recognize each other. Deadline reports that Goggins will play the prime suspect in the sexual assault of a young woman, a case being investigated by Dorff’s character. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of the novel Mall.

Keanu Reeves in Talks for AKIRA? [UPDATED]

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: May 6th, 2011

The live-action version of Akira may actually be happening. After Warner Bros. secured a co-financer for the $230 million pricetag (Legendary Pictures, who just recently backed out of the deal), and Harry Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves turned in a rewrite of the script that had everyone eager to get going, producers began searching for their cast. Directors the Hughes brothers have been searching for an A-lister with global appeal to star in the flick (you don’t gamble that amount of money without ensuring that you’re gonna rake in serious international revenue), but for a while it seemed like they were searching in vain.
Now, Vulture reports that Keanu Reeves is in very early talks to take on the starring role in the film. Based upon the manga and the 1988 anime adaptation, Akira centers on teenager Shōtarō Kaneda and his quest to stop his friend Tetsuo from destroying Neo-Tokyo. Hit the jump for more on the project.
[Update: Heat Vision reports that Reeves is in talks for the role of Kaneda, the gang leader.]

Laura Linney to Star Opposite Bill Murray in HYDE PARK ON THE HUDSON; Ricky Gervais’ Voice Joins SPY KIDS: ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD

by Ramses Flores    Posted: May 6th, 2011

Laura Linney (The Big C) will star alongside Bill Murray in Hyde Park on the Hudson.  The film focuses on FDR’s love affair with his cousin, Daisy, during a June weekend in 1939 when the British King and Queen visited Roosevelt’s upstate New York cottage in what was the first ever visit to America by a member of the British monarchy.  As we previously reported, the notoriously reclusive Bill Murray has signed on to star as FDR.  Now, Deadline reports that Linney has signed on to play FDR’s cousin/lover, Daisy.  I’ll watch anything with Bill Murray and it’ll be interesting to see who will end up playing Eleanor Roosevelt along with the King and Queen.  Roger Mitchell (Morning Glory) will direct the film.
In other casting news, Ricky Gervais has signed on to voice the character of Argonaut in the upcoming Spy Kids film, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World.   In the press release Gervais said, “Not only am I lending my voice to Spy Kids, but they can keep it.  I’m sick of it.”  Not much is known about Argonaut besides the fact that he is a robot spy dog.  Gervais joins the cast which already includes Jessica Alba, Jeremy Piven, Joel McHale, Rowan Blanchard, Mason Cook, Antonio Banderas, Danny Trejo , Alexa Vega, and Daryl Sabara.  Spy Kids: All the Time in the World opens on August 19, 2011 and it’s written and directed by Robert Rodriguez.  Hit the jump  for the synopsis.

Will Smith Frontrunner for Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED; Christoph Waltz Confirmed to Star

by Ramses Flores    Posted: May 6th, 2011

Will Smith has been informally offered the lead role in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming “Southern”/Spaghetti Western, Django Unchained.  The project came out of nowhere last week and we’ve slowly been getting more details about the film during the past couple of days.  We know that Tarantino is aiming to start production in late summer or fall and we also have this plot synopsis:
“Django is a freed slave, who, under the tutelage of a German bounty hunter becomes a bad-ass bounty hunter himself, and after assisting Waltz in taking down some bad guys for profit, is helped by Waltz in tracking down his slave wife and liberating her from an evil plantation owner.”
The film is moving at a fast pace and we now have some info regarding who Tarantino is hoping to cast and which roles they play.  Here’s a hint:  Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson.  Hit the jump for more.

7 Movie Clips and ‘A Look Inside’ Featurette from BRIDESMAIDS

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: April 30th, 2011

With director Paul Feig’s (Freaks And Geeks)  Bridesmaids opening May 13, Universal has released seven movie clips and A Look Inside featurette.  The film stars Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Matt Lucas, Chris O’Dowd, Melissa McCarthy and Jon Hamm.
While I might still be under embargo, if I wasn’t, I’d probably tell you Bridesmaids is ridiculously funny and one of the best films I’ve seen this year.  I’d also tell you that Bridesmaids has one of the funniest scenes I’ve seen in a theater in a long time.  If you weren’t sold by the trailer or this red band trailer, trust me when I say, Bridesmaids is absolutely worth seeing and I really suggest watching it with a crowded theater.  You’ll love it.  Hit the jump for the clips and featurette, and look for interviews with the cast the week of release.

First Images of STRAW DOGS Starring James Marsden, Kate Bosworth, and Alexander Skarsgård

Screen Gems has released the first images from Straw Dogs, a remake of the 1971 thriller directed by Sam Peckinpah.  James Marsden and Kate Bosworth fill in for Dustin Hoffman and Susan George as the Sumners, “a husband and wife who clash with sadistic small-town Mississippi locals.”  Alexander Skarsgård, Rhys Coiro, James Woods, Laz Alonso, Dominic Purcell, and Walton Goggins also star.
Writer/director Rod Lurie (Nothing But the Truth) recognizes the trickiness in redoing Peckinpah, but the remake doesn’t try to soften the brutal impact of the rape-filled original:
“It’s a fool’s errand to try to outdo Peckinpah on his turf… This is not a soft movie.  People leave this movie saying they need a drink.”

Plot Details and Production Update for Quentin Tarantino’s Spaghetti Western DJANGO UNCHAINED

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: April 30th, 2011

And so, with last night’s twitpic of the title page of Quentin Tarantino’s latest script, we’re off.  The spaghetti western is indeed titled Django Unchained.  Franco Nero first spoke about his attachment in February, so the project is surely tied to the character that Nero originated in 1966’s Django.  A source who reportedly read the script sent Shadow and Act a plot synopsis that suggests Nero may be too Italian to play the title role:
“Django is a freed slave, who, under the tutelage of a German bounty hunter (played by Christoph Waltz) becomes a bad-ass bounty hunter himself, and after assisting Waltz in taking down some bad guys for profit, is helped by Waltz in tracking down his slave wife and liberating her from an evil plantation owner.”
So “Unchained” is literal.  That’s great!  Thompson on Hollywood confirmed with agency WME that Waltz is on board; Nero indicated Keith Carradine and Treat Williams will also appear.  Hit the jump for more production details.

Lee Pace and Dean O’Gorman Join Peter Jackson’s THE HOBBIT

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 30th, 2011

Director Peter Jackson announced two new additions to the cast of The Hobbit. Lee Pace (Pushing Daises) is set to star as the Elven King Thranduil. In The Lord of the Rings mythology, Thrandull is the father of Legolas and plays a supporting role in The Hobbit. Additionally, Kiwi actor Dean O’Gorman will be playing Fili, a dwarf and one of the twelve companions of Bilbo. Posting the news on his Facebook page, here’s what Jackson had to say about the casting of Pace:
“Casting these Tolkien stories is very difficult, especially the Elven characters, and Lee has always been our first choice for Thranduil. He’s going to be great.  We loved his performance in a movie called The Fall a few years ago, and have been hoping to work with him since.  When we were first discussing who would be right for Thranduil, Lee came into mind almost immediately.”
While I’m not familiar with O’Gorman, the addition of Pace to the cast is great news. He turned in some fantastic work in Bryan Fuller’s criminally underrated TV series Pushing Daisies, and his involvement is certainly exciting. The Hobbit will be broken into two parts.  Part 1 is set for December 2012 and Part 2 will come out in December 2013.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the book.

Set Photos from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN; Oscorp Confirmed to Appear in the Film

Following the barrage of set photos that appeared to hit weekly earlier this year, it seemed like all was quiet on the amateur photography front for The Amazing Spider-Man. Well, now photos giving us our first look at Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker in glasses (smart!), as well as capturing the rehearsal for what looks to be a big stunt piece in the film have surfaced.
If that wasn’t enough, it’s been confirmed that Oscorp, the company run by Norman Osborn (the Green Goblin), will appear in the film. Apparently scenes were being filmed in an “Oscorp” building, complete with employees wearing Oscorp badges and such. Hit the jump to check out all the photos, as well as more information on Oscorp’s role in the film. Starring Garfield, Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans, The Amazing Spider-Man is slated for a July 3rd, 2012 release.

Anthony Mackie May Star in WORLD WAR Z and GANGSTER SQUAD

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 29th, 2011

The Hurt Locker star Anthony Mackie may be starring in two high profile upcoming projects. First up, the actor is fielding an offer to star alongside Brad Pitt and The Killing’s Mireille Enos in the post-apocalyptic tale World War Z. Directed by Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace), the is based on the book of the same name which details the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse from the perspective of survivors as varied as mercenaries, US government officials, and impoverished Palestinians.
Variety also reports that Mackie is being eyed for a role in Ruben Fleischer’s (Zombieland) 1940’s crime drama Gangster Squad. That film boasts an impressive cast that includes Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling. No word on what role Mackie would play in either film. Trailer for ONE DAY Starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess

The first trailer for One Day has been released. Directed by Lone Scherfig (An Education), the film stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. One Day tells the story of two friends who meet on the night of their college graduation and proceed to meet exactly once each year on July 15 for the next two decades. The trailer looked alright until the banal voice-over came on, then it kind of spiraled into a horrifying train wreck. Still, the premise is interesting enough, and under Scherfig’s direction it could possibly turn out OK. Then again, it could be the next Leap Year.

Is Quentin Tarantino’s New Movie Titled DJANGO UNCHAINED?

by Adam Chitwood  Posted: April 29th, 2011

There’ve been rumblings about Quentin Tarantino’s next project for a while now. He previously talked about doing “a Southern,” a film that would bring to surface all the slavery issues that Americans are none too fond of tackling. Then there was that spaghetti western with Franco Nero rumored to be starring. In that updated story, it was confirmed that Tarantino was in fact writing a western, and Christoph Waltz is one of the stars. Beyond that, nothing else was known. The script was due to be turned in to The Weinstein Company in two months, at which time we might know more. Well, that was February.
Today, we may have learned that the title of Tarantino’s next film may be Django Unchained. How did we learn this? If you remember that image of the title page for the Inglourious Basterds script, with Tarantino’s scribbled handwriting, what lies after the jump may look familiar. Hit the jump to see what I’m talking about. ........ http://collider.com/quentin-tarantino-django-unchained/88262/

Brett Ratner to Direct New "Hercules" Film

Posted: April 28th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) has been in talks to direct a new "Hercules" movie for a while, and now comes word that the helmer is now negotiating to bring "Hercules: The Thracian Wars" comic book to the big screen for MGM.

Plot: Fourteen-hundred years ago, a tormented soul walked the Earth that was neither man nor god. Hercules, powerful son of the god king Zeus, received nothing but suffering his entire life. After twelve arduous labors and the loss of his family, this dark, world-weary soul turned his back on the gods, finding his only solace in bloody battle.

Over the years he warmed to the company of six similar souls, their only bond being their love of fighting and the presence of death. These men and woman never question where, why, or whom they go to fight; only how much they will be paid. Knowing this, the King of Thrace has hired these mercenaries to train his men to become the greatest army of all time.

Hercules begins to question King Cotys' motives when he takes his army out to battle and sees them practice on innocent men, women, and children of their neighbors. Deep in his soul something stirs, but is it enough to stop a mad king and his army of the damned from marching across Greece - or even Olympus itself?
