Idris Elba Confirmed for Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 22nd, 2011

I’m glad to see that Idris Elba (The Wire) is finally getting his due. A fantastic actor, he recently starred in Thor, is currently filming Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, and now it looks like he’ll be starring in Guillermo del Toro’s next film Pacific Rim. Earlier this month, we told you that Legendary Pictures wanted Elba for the flick. Now, Deadline reports that the actor has closed his deal, taking on a role that was originally envisioned for Tom Cruise. The film takes place in two different worlds, with monsters featuring prominently. We laid out some plot details back in March, but the story basically centers on humans piloting giant robots to battle aliens invading through a wormhole-like structure.
Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) is set to star, with Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) in talks to take on a role as well. Elba was previously mentioned as a contender for the starring role in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, but Jamie Foxx is now rumored to be the frontrunner for that role after Will Smith passed. Elba joining Pacific Rim all but confirms that he’s out of the running for Tarantino’s latest. http://collider.com/idris-elba-pacific-rim-2/98025/

Watchmen Writer Hired To Pen The Crow Reboot, Bradley Cooper Confirmed To Star

published: 2011-06-23 01:12:07 Author: Eric Eisenberg
While I'm fully aware that there are more than a couple people who disagree, the Zack Snyder-directed adaptation of Watchmen isn't a bad movie. For years the Alan Moore comic was perceived as unfilmable and the truth is that writer Alex Tse not only did a good job structuring the incredibly complex plot, but did it in a way that always respected the source material. Now Tse has been hired to script another comic book property that fans aren't necessarily happy to see being done.

Relativity Media has announced via press release that Tse has been hired to write the script for the upcoming "reinvention" of The Crow. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who previously helmed 28 Weeks Later, has been officially announced as the director, and Bradley Cooper has been announced as Eric Draven, the film's central protagonist who returns from the dead to seek vengeance against those that murdered his wife. The film is a "gritty reboot" (yes, the press release uses those words) of the 1994 Alex Proyas film starring Brandon Lee.

As interesting as it could be to see what Tse does with the storyline, I still don't understand why anybody thinks this is a good idea. The Proyas film is a true cult classic with a huge fanbase that isn't going to be happy to hear that a studio thinks their favorite film isn't good enough for modern audiences. Do yourself a favor and instead of wasting your time thinking about this, just head over to Netflix and check it out on instant watch.

Warren Beatty Wants An All-Star Cast For His Howard Hughes Biopic

published: 2011-06-22 23:14:44 Author: Katey Rich
Back in February a rumor surfaced that once Christopher Nolan was done once and for all with the Batman franchise, he would move on to a biopic about Howard Hughes, this one focusing on his later years as opposed to the glitzy Hollywood era depicted in Martin Scorsese's The Aviator. But before Nolan is even done with the Bat cowl, a Hollywood legend might beat him to the punch. Deadline reports that Warren Beatty is finally moving ahead on his long-gestating dream project, and yes, it's a biopic of Howard Hughes that he plans to star in and direct.

They've also got a list of the actors Beatty has been meeting with, and weirdly enough, it includes Alec Baldwin, who played a major character in The Aviator. It also includes a laundry list of interesting up and coming actors-- Andrew Garfield, Shia LaBeouf, Evan Rachel Wood and Rooney Mara-- plus Jack Nicholson and, of course, his wife Annette Bening. Deadline says it's not really a biopic, even though Beatty will play Hughes and the movie will focus on the mogul's later years. It's too early to say how it might affect Nolan's film, since both films are in early development and who knows what else Nolan has in mind, so you don't have to choose Team Warren vs. Team Christopher just yet. When the time comes, though, just remember who has the backup supply of Batarangs to prove his point.

Fox Sets Max Landis To Write Yet Another Frankenstein Movie

published: 2011-06-22 22:52:47 Author: Katey Rich
There are nearly half a dozen takes on the classic Frankenstein story in the works in Hollywood right now, but apparently there's still room for one more. Variety reports that Fox has hired Max Landis, the writer of the in-development screenplay Chronicle and, yes, the son of John, to work on the screenplay for a new Frankenstein film. There's no word on what kind of take he'd have on the story, but with Proof playwright David Auburn working on one that incorporates Mary Shelley herself into the story, Matt Reeves directing one about Dr. Frankenstein attempting to save his brother's life, and Sony planning a modern day version of the story, he's going to have to think pretty hard to come up with something original.

When you've got so many similar projects in development at the same time, it becomes a kind of an arms race where only one winner is possible-- it's very rare that we wind up with situations like the one between Universal and Relativity Media, as each works on their own Snow White story. Who knows how Landis's project will fit into the derby, though he'll have to move fast if he wants to beat out some of these other ones, which have been in development for years. There's no one on board to direct this one right now, though apparently Paul Greengrass and David Yates are on the wishlist.

Jessica Biel: Darker Hair for 'Total Recall'
Jessica Biel smiles for fans outside the set of Total Recall on Monday (June 20) in Toronto, Canada.
The 29-year-old actress signed autographs for onlookers after a busy day shooting scenes.
Earlier this month, Jessica arrived in Canada to begin filming the movie, which also stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, and Ethan Hawke.
Jess had to dye her hair a darker shade of brown for the flick!
“Her color is supposed to look very rich for the film. It’s definitely darker, but there are a lot of highlights all over,” Jess‘ hair consultant Tracey Cunningham said. “I also added a reddish gloss for extra warmth.” http://justjared.buzznet.com/2011/06/22/jessica-biel-darker-brown-for-total-recall/

David O. Russell Talking With Robert De Niro About The Silver Linings Playbook

published: 2011-06-20 14:46:51 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Apparently David O. Russell really wants to make a movie with Robert De Niro. When the director was still attached to make an adaptation of the video game Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, he made a deal with the actor to co-star alongside Mark Wahlberg and Joe Pesci. Now that Russell has moved on from that project, however, he apparently wants to bring De Niro with him.

According to Variety, The Ghetto Film School honored Russell with an award earlier today at New York's The Standard Hotel, with Melissa Leo and Blake Lively presenting the prize, but Russell showed up a half-hour late to the ceremony. What was his reasoning? Said the filmmaker, "I was in a meeting with Mr. De Niro, possibly about The Silver Linings Playbook: A Novel." Just like Uncharted, the project is already set with Mark Wahlberg to star and apparently Angelina Jolie has also met with the director about a role. In the film, a former teacher who has been released from a mental asylum tries to win back his ex-wife.

I wonder if this means that Pesci will be signing on soon as well. More importantly, this seems to solidify the idea that Silver Linings Playbook will be Russell's next film, beating out about 2 Guns, Cocaine Cowboys, a Russ Meyer biopic, The Fighter 2,and Maleficent. Then again, after what happeend with both Uncharted and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies I'm not willing to put money on it.

First Crazy, Stupid, Love Poster And Why Steve Carell Really Needs This To Work

published: 2011-06-20 14:32:35 Author: Josh Tyler
We’ve gotten our hands on the first poster for Crazy, Stupid, Love, Steve Carell’s first movie after his departure from NBC’s The Office. The movie stars Steve as an uptight 40-something whose perfect life is thrown into chaos when he discovers his wife is cheating on him and wants a divorce. He teams up with Ryan Gosling, who tries to play wingman for him in the dating world. Sounds like kind of generic stuff, but I think this could be a good move for Carell. More on that after the poster.

Here’s the first poster for Crazy, Stupid, Love:
Steve Carell really needs this movie to be good. Not just because it’s his first film without the built in support of The Office behind him, but because, well… when was the last time he made something people loved? Steve Carell hasn’t really done anything people truly care about since Little Miss Sunshine in 2006. Since then he’s wandered into a string of forgettable, high-concept, low-delivery comedies. Some of them made money, though not a ton, many of them didn’t. All of them were forgotten the minute they left theaters. Is anyone sitting around rewatching Evan Almighty? Who’s rushing out to buy Dinner for Schmucks on Blu-Ray? No one.

For awhile it seemed like Carell had huge comedic potential. He seemed poised to become the next big, classic, comedy star. He’s still working but it hasn’t really happened. Most of his mediocrity has come in the form of crazy, high-concept comedies like Schmucks in which he was sort of funny even though the movie never worked. So… maybe it’s time he tried something a little more grounded?

There’s enough in this premise that could work, and Carell’s ideally suited to play a lonely, sad sack divorcee. It's characters like that which made us fall in love with him in the first place. Crazy, Stupid, Love could be just what Steve Carell’s post-Office career needs.

Megan Fox Fired From Transformers Because Steven Spielberg Fears Hitler?

published: 2011-06-20 12:14:27 Author: Josh Tyler
There are a million theories out there, attempting to explain Mega Fox’s sudden dismissal from the Transformers franchise and subsequent replacement by a human catfish. The one she’d like you to believe is that she simply quit because she was tired of robots and stuff. We’ve always believed, however, that Michael Bay didn’t like it when she called him Hitler, and so he fired her. But maybe it wasn’t Bay who didn’t want her.

Steven Spielberg is the executive producer of Transformers and the Daily Mail claims that Michael Bay recently told them it was Spielberg who made them fire her. Bay says, "You know the Hitler thing. Steven (Spielberg) said, fire her right now.”

I’m not sure I buy it. I guess we’re supposed to think that Spielberg is Jewish and thus really touchy about Hitler stuff, but he’s also an adult and I’d hope that would mean he’s able to, you know, apply logic to a situation. What Fox originally said was that Michael Bay, “…wants to be like Hitler on his sets, and he is. So he’s a nightmare to work for.” It was a metaphor for cruelty, not a way of threatening to march the Jews off to camps all over again. Maybe it was a dumb metaphor, but it’s not like Spielberg and Bay hired Megan Fox because she was smart. At the time Michael Bay seemed to get it, and simply fired back some snarky comments at her and moved on.

It seems weird that Spielberg would be so overly sensitive about his Jewish heritage that he’d run around firing people for simply using the word “Hitler”, as if he’s a professor at Hogwarts trying to keep people from saying “Voldemort”. It seems weirder still that Michael Bay would actually tell anyone that his boss is that ridiculous, even if it were true. I think the thing to keep in mind here is that the report of this Michael Bay quote from the Daily Mail, where there as likely to invent a fake quote as they are to report a real one. Don’t be surprised if Bay comes out and tells everyone he was misquoted, some time soon.

Guillermo Del Toro Would Love to Direct Maleficent
Jun 21, 2011 by Courtney O.
Hero Complex recently spoke with Guillermo del Toro and asked the filmmaker if he would be interested in directing Disney's upcoming Maleficent feature, which is a retelling of Sleeping Beauty from the point of view of the sinister green witch who transforms into a majestic black and purple dragon.
Tim Burton was previously attached to direct the film, but has since dropped out.

"Let me put it this way, if they ask I'll take the meeting," Guillermo del Toro said. "I think Maleficent's dragon is the only design with the wings separate from the front legs, the only time that design has ever worked. And let me tell you how much of a fan I am. I have a collection of over two or three dozen Maleficent figures, some of them four or five feet tall. I own about 10 pieces of conceptual art from Sleeping Beauty that include the dragon and a lot more pieces that are just from Sleeping Beauty. It's one of my three favorite Disney films. I would love to. But I don't want to put too many hopes on it. They're probably on a fast track and I cannot take any more projects on a fast track."

No production date has been set.

Maleficent comes to theaters in 2013 and stars Angelina Jolie. The film is directed by Tim Burton.

Channing Tatum Attached to Produce and Star in BLOOD BROTHERS

Guillermo Del Toro Will NOT Direct "Hellboy 3"
Posted: June 19th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Ever since "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" hit theaters, Guillermo Del Toro has been saying that he would love to direct a third/final installment. Unfortunately for "Hellboy" fans, Del Toro is working on more projects than he can handle, making the third film less of a priority every day.

Back in March, the director said that there have been zero discussions about "Hellboy 3" at Universal Pictures. And now, Mike Mignola, the creator of the "Hellboy" comic book, confirmed that Del Toro will never return to the franchise.

"Last I heard he said he would not make it," said Mignola. "In every interview there's a new story on what his next movie is and he honestly believes he's going to do all these things. But last I heard, he said 'I'm never gonna get back to Hellboy.' I'm not surprised because he won't live long enough to do a tenth of the movies he's told me he's going to make."

It's no surprise that Universal is not eager to continue the franchise, since the first two installments failed to make back the budget domestically.

David Dobkin's King Arthur Reboot Finds Home At Warner Bros.
published: 2011-06-18 09:17:50 Author: Sean O'Connell

Hoping to tap into the reboot magic that worked so well on Guy Ritchie’s reimagined Sherlock Holmes, Warner Bros. reportedly is going back to the drawing board on the King Arthur legend for a potential tentpole picture. But it’s the studio’s choice in director that sets this story of yet another remake apart from the pack.

Variety says WB wants David Dobkin, of Wedding Crashers and the upcoming body-switch comedy The Change-Up, to helm the period adventure from his own script. That likely means this Arthur will be a blend of action and comedy -- probably in line with Dobkin's own Shanghai Knights, with Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson -- than the humorless, Jerry Bruckheimer-backed version that tanked in 2004, even with Clive Owen and Keira Knightley in the lead roles.

The key will be casting. Audiences have been reluctant to embrace a modern telling of the Round Table knights, but putting the right actors in place could spell the difference between Kevin Costner’s blockbuster Robin Hood: Pribce of Thieves and Russell Crowe’s largely ignored (though underrated) Robin Hood with Ridley Scott. Who knows? Maybe if The Change-Up really works, we’ll see Ryan Reynolds as Arthur and Jason Bateman as Lancelot. Toss in Kristen Wiig as Guinevere, and I’ll get in line tomorrow for that version.

Charlie Day Circling Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 16th, 2011

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s up-and-up star Charlie Day is currently in talks to join director Guillermo del Toro’s alien-invasion pic Pacific Rim. Variety reports that Day would play a professor in the film leaving the rest of the role’s details to the imagination (for the record, I’m imagining him in black-rimmed glasses). If the deal goes through, the actor would join fellow FX alum Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) who signed on to star in the project back in May. Idris Elba is also rumored to be high on Legendary’s wishlist, although his involvement is yet to be confirmed.
As a refresher, Pacific Rim is penned by Travis Beacham and is described as a monster flick set within two worlds. It seems as if Beacham’s script will involve humans manning giant robots (i.e. “mecha”) in order to protect the world(s) from said alien invasion (a thought I would find somewhat cheesy if not for del Toro’s exceptional sense of visuals). You’ll remember that del Toro took over the helm of Pacific Rim shortly after Universal failed to greenlight his R-rated version of At the Mountains of Madness. As for Day, the actor can next be seen alongside Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, and Colin Farrell in the comedy Horrible Bosses opening July 8th. http://collider.com/charlie-day-pacific-rim/96946/

Luke Evans Is Bard the Grim, Benedict Cumberbatch to Voice Smaug in THE HOBBIT

by Jason Barr   Posted: June 16th, 2011

In a bit of dual casting news, both Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes in BBC’s Sherlock) have landed roles in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. Evans will make a turn as Bard the Grim and Deadline reports that Cumberbatch will voice the dragon Smaug in Jackson’s two-part return to Tolkien which is currently in production in New Zealand. Whereas Evans’ casting comes as a bit of fresh news, rumors of Cumberbatch’s involvement began to swirl back in May when The Hobbit co-star Martin Freeman let the news accidentally slip to a BBC reporter. Per the report, Cumberbatch will take on the role of Smaug via motion capture while also providing voice work for the character Necromancer.
As for Evans, it is believed that his turn as Bard will have a larger role in the second Hobbit installment. Regardless, it is assured that he and Cumberbatch’s Smaug will not be on good terms as the story goes that Smaug was responsible for the death of Bard’s father. Evans can next be seen in Immortals and The Three Musketeers while Cumberbatch has roles in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy. Part 1 of The Hobbit is slated to hit 3D theaters in December 2012 with Part 2 coming in December 2013. In addition to Evans, Cumberbatch, and the aforementioned Freeman, The Hobbit also stars Cate Blanchett, Ian McKellan, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Andy Serkis, and Stephen Fry. http://collider.com/luke-evans-benedict-cumberbatch-the-hobbit/96940/

Annette Bening in Talks to Join Paul Dano in HE LOVES ME

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 16th, 2011

It looks like Annette is close to locking in her first role post-The Kids Are All Right. Variety reports that the actress is in negotiations to star in Fox Searchlight’s He Loves Me. The film stars Paul Dano as “a once-great novelist who is creativity blocked due to heartache and loneliness,” only to be turned around when he writes his dream girl who then comes to life. So it’s like Weird Science meets Mannequin, only super indie.
Dano’s real-life girlfriend, Zoe Kazan, wrote the screenplay and will star in the film as the dream girl. Bening is eying the role of Dano’s mother, a painter who’s worried about how much her son hates her second-husband, a dirty hippie (the answer is a lot. He hates your dirty hippie husband a lot). Little Miss Sunshine directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are helming the flick, which starts filming next month. http://collider.com/annette-bening-he-loves-me-paul-dano/96848/

Zoe Saldana Joins Mark Ruffalo in J.J. Abrams-Produced INFINITELY POLAR BEAR

Vulture reports that Saldana wil play Ruffalo’s wife in what they describe as “the dramatic version of Mr. Mom.”
Screenwriter Maya Forbes (Monsters vs. Aliens) is making her directorial debut on the project, which is getting some much-needed funding from investor Megan Ellison, who is also funding two of Paul Thomas Anderson’s projects. Robert Zemeckis’ Next Project Confirmed to Be FLIGHT; Set to Shoot This Fall With Denzel Washington Attached to Star

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 4th, 2011

It looks like after a decade wading in motion-capture films, Robert Zemeckis’ next film will be the live-action drama Flight. The Back to the Future director first entered negotiations to helm the flick back in April, but no one was certain which project he would choose as his next. He’s flirted with the time-travel films Replay and Timeless, and there’s always the ever-elusive Who Framed Roger Rabbit? sequel. Now 24 Frames reports that Zemeckis has firmed up Flight as his next project, with Denzel Washington expected to close his deal to star shortly and filming aimed for the fall.
The plot of Flight centers on an alcoholic/drug addicted pilot who saves a flight in distress, becoming an American hero in the process. The newfound fame comes with an investigation by the FAA to see whether drugs played a factor in the distress, while Washington’s character attempts to turn his life around. by Jason Barr    Posted: June 4th, 2011

Idris Elba (Thor, The Wire) is an actor I’m glad to see in virtually any role. His presence is the only reason I was able to endure 2009′s thriller Obsessed and he is perhaps the number one reason why 2007′s This Christmas has been adopted into my annual holiday fare (yeah, I really just referenced both of those films in the same sentence). While I may be alone in my devotion to This Christmas, it seems as if I’m not the only one who likes seeing Elba land roles as TheWrap reports that Legendary Pictures wants the actor for Guillermo del Toro’s sci-fi project Pacific Rim. In case your memory escapes you, Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam and is a monster flick set within two worlds. Back in March, we laid out some potential plot elements from the film and we now know that Travis Beacham’s script will see humans take on alien invaders by piloting giant robots (or “mecha”). When you potentially combine del Toro, Elba, and giant robotic constructs, you may as well just go ahead and deduct the box office dollars directly from my bank account.
In addition to possibly taking on Pacific Rim, Elba is also rumored to be in contention to play the namesake in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. He is currently filming Ridley Scott’s Prometheus alongside Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender and has a starring role in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance with Nicolas Cage. Those films are due out June 8th and February 17th, 2012 respectively. http://collider.com/idris-elba-pacific-rim/94725/

First Clip for 30 MINUTES OR LESS

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: June 4th, 2011

Columbia has released the first clip for 30 Minutes or Less.  The excerpt focuses on the teacher played by Aziz Ansari, here in his first starring role in a feature.  It captures Ansari’s talent for portraying likeable arrogance by mining the comedic gold that is being mean to kids.  Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride, Nick Swardson, and Dilshad Vadsaria also star in director Ruben Fleischer’s follow-up to Zombieland30 Minutes or Less opens on August 12.  Watch the clip after the jump. http://collider.com/30-minutes-or-less-movie-clip/94685/

Aziz Ansari Tries To Explain The Louisiana Purchase In New 30 Minute Or Less Clip

published: 2011-06-04 10:34:22 Author: Mack Rawden
When I was a little kid, I never thought about my teachers having personal lives. They were just random adults there to teach me math, and whenever one of them was in a bad mood, I always assumed it was directly related to one of my fellow classmate’s poor behavior. Now I have friends who are teachers, and I know they’re just as likely to have screwed-up personal lives as the rest of us. That’s definitely the case here with Aziz Ansari in the new clip from 30 Minutes Or Less.

Annoyed at his students texting during his class, Ansari tries to teach them about the Louisiana Purchase but is interrupted by his buddy Jesse Eisenberg who has a crazy story about what he did last night. It involves masked man, bombs and underhanded schemes. Find out the details in the clip below…
There are a lot of things I love about the above clip, but more than anything else, I’m pleased with the casting. By now, we all know Jesse Eisenberg pulls off the nervous guy well, but Aziz Ansari is also perfect as the wise ass, marginally-apathetic teacher. I love how he handles the text messages, and I love his angry shock at his friend bringing a bomb around children.

30 Minutes Or Less opens on August 12th. It also stars Danny McBride and Nick Swardson as the two idiots who strapped Eisenberg into the bomb suit. If the rest of the movie is as good as this clip, we should all be in for a great summer comedy.

Patricia Arquette Cast In David Arquette-Directed Glutton

published: 2011-06-03 16:14:34 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Much like the Baldwins, the Carradines, the Coppolas, the Cusacks and the Wayans, the Arquette family is well established in the acting world. From David to Patricia to Alexis to Richmond to Rosanna, they've all had at least some success in the movie industry and while their stars aren't as bright as they once were, they still get work on a regular basis and occasionally get to work together. Case in point, Variety is reporting that David Arquette has cast his sister Patricia in his newest directorial effort.

Titled Glutton, the film is a psychological thriller about a 1,200-pound man, played by Abraham Benrubi. Patricia will be playing the man's sister and caretaker while Kacey Barnfield, who is also a new addition to the cast, will play the man's friend and blind neighbor. The project won't be David's first time directing his sister, as he also helmed three episodes of her series Medium. The film will be Patricia's first since 2008's A Single Woman. Production is scheduled to begin next month in the Great White North.

I'll admit to having a weird curiosity about this project. I am curious to see how one makes a movie that is meant to toy with the mind while the main character is a human oddity that can't get out of bed. The article says that the film is "in the vein of Misery," and while I get the connection, at least James Caan could crawl around the floor and try to escape. How they will manage that same level of drama with a character that can't move would be interesting to see.

Bradley Cooper Wants to Write the Script for HYPERION

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: May 27th, 2011

Apparently The Hangover Part II star Bradley Cooper is a burgeoning screenwriter in addition to being one of the most in-demand actors at the moment. Cooper appeared on Charlie Rose (via SlashFilm) earlier this week, and during their interview the actor revealed that he’s written an adaptation of Dan Simmons’ sci-fi epic Hyperion on spec with a friend. Cooper said that they have submitted the script to GK Films and are currently in negotiations to script the film adaptation. He adds, “Ideally I’d like to direct it, but there’s no way.”
The project has been in development for quite some time, with Scott Derrickson attached to direct in 2009. Cooper’s deal isn’t official by any means, but he’s definitely interested in tackling the material. Hit the jump for a synopsis of Simmons’ novel. http://collider.com/bradley-cooper-hyperion/93406/

A new trailer for Troy Nixey’s Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark has been released, and it’s just as creepy as the first one. The film was co-written and produced by Guillermo del Toro and centers on a family that moves into a new estate that houses very horrifying things. Every time the teaser trailer plays in a movie theater I’m at, the audience is audibly scared out of their minds. This new trailer gives a bit more plot info (though not a lot), and gives us a look at the cast. All in all, I can’t wait to see this in a full theater on a Friday night. Finally, a horror movie that’s actually scary. Starring Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, and Bailee Madison Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is set to be released on August 12th.

Confirmed: Orlando Bloom Will Reprise His Role as Legolas for THE HOBBIT

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 27th, 2011 at 10:23 am

Back in December, we reported that Orlando Bloom might reprise his role as Elven sharpshooter Legolas for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit.  Today on his official Facebook page, Jackson confirmed that he had Legolas bow:
Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas. I’m excited to announce today that we’ll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I’m thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older—and he doesn’t! I guess that’s why he makes such a wonderful elf.
Bloom is the latest Lord of the Rings cast member to join The Hobbit.  While Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Elrond (Hugo Weaving), and Gollum (Andy Serkis) actually appear in J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, Jackson has apparently made room for Legolas, Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), old Bilbo (Ian Holm), and Frodo (Elijah Wood).  Hit the jump for the synopsis of the novel.  The two-part 3D film is set for December 2012 and December 2013.

Sissy Spacek to Make Directorial Debut with BUTTERMILK SKY

by Jason Barr   Posted: May 9th, 2011

After years of turning in terrific performances in front of the camera (Coal Miner’s Daughter and Carrie come to mind), Oscar-winning actress Sissy Spacek is poised to release her first effort from the director’s chair. 24 Frames reports that Spacek will helm Buttermilk Sky, a 1930s drama to be based upon Julia Oliver’s short story collection Goodbye to the Buttermilk Sky. Per the report, Oliver’s “supernaturally inflected” collection of 15 short stories “centers on various families and relationships in Depression-era Alabama.” No production timetable is given, however, casting news regarding Buttermilk Sky is expected to follow in the next few days (Spacek is not expected to take on any roles).
For more info on the project, hit the jump to check out a brief overview of Oliver’s collection. Spacek can be seen alongside Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard, Viola Davis, and Jessica Chastain in the upcoming drama The Help. That film hits theaters this summer on August 12.

Brett Ratner to Direct THE 39 CLUES for DreamWorks

by Jason Barr    Posted: May 9th, 2011

Director Brett Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand) has been tapped to direct the live-action adaptation of the Scholastic young-adult book series, The 39 Clues. According to Deadline, Ratner will once again collaborate with scribe Jeff Nathanson on the project which DreamWorks initially envisioned as a directing vehicle for Steven Spielberg (a studio can dream, can’t they?). Ratner and Nathanson have previously collaborated on Rush Hour 2 and Rush Hour 3 and most recently on Ratner’s upcoming action/comedy Tower Heist. That film is due out later this year on November 4 and stars Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Matthew Broderick, Casey Affleck, and Tea Leoni.
As for The 39 Clues, the popular book series/online game/card collection recently published its eleventh installment which focuses on the Cahill family (a.k.a. “the most powerful family in the world”). Casting Call: Charlie Hunnam to Star in Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM; Amber Heard and Shiloh Fernandez Like SYRUP

by Jason Barr    Posted: May 9th, 2011

We have a couple of casting stories to send your way tonight. First up, Charlie Hunnam (FX’s Sons of Anarchy) has landed the starring role in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. Heat Vision reports that details regarding Hunnam’s role are under wraps but speculates that the turn may be as a pilot of a mecha (from the Japanese genre which involves humans manning “robotic constructs”) that “needs to climb back into the driver’s chair.” You may remember that the director decided to pursue Pacific Rim as his next project shortly after Universal failed to greenlight his R-rated take on At the Mountains of Madness. Back in March, we filled you in on some of the film’s potential plot elements and described the project as a monster-pic that takes place in “two worlds.” Hunnam’s casting reiterates that synopsis and describes Pacific Rim as “monster movie that sees powerful extraterrestrial aliens threaten the Earth’s existence, attacking cities and nations neighboring the Pacific Ocean.”
To read about Amber Heard and Shiloh Fernandez’s latest project, hit the jump.

Justin Lin on "Highlander" Remake

Posted: May 10th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Back in September of 2009, "Fast Five" director Justin Lin was in talks to direct the remake of "Highlander." MTV has now caught up with the helmer to get an update.

"I've been working with ['Iron Man' writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway] on the script," he said. "That's one where Summit has been really good [about letting it develop], and for me, it's about making sure that we can take it to the place where I feel comfortable and great about making it. I feel like I have a very good studio and team and we're working on it."

"Highlander" is just one of many projects Lin is developing, including "Terminator 5" and "Fast Five" sequel. "I have different projects at different stages," he continued. "You work on so many projects all at once, and at some point, you have to make the call. I feel like right now, 'Highlander' is in pretty good shape, but I still have to see all the other things come together for us to go make it."

Guillermo Del Toro Says "Hellboy 3" Isn't Happening
Posted: March 12th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Movieweb recently caught up with Guillermo Del Toro, who spoke about "Frankenstein," "At the Mountains of Madness," "Pacific Rim" and the third "Hellboy" movie.

While he respects Universal Pictures' decision not to fund "At the Mountains of Madness," he said that the plan is to one day develop the film. "A hundred percent I'll try," the director explained. "With a little bit of luck we will find good terms to get it back from Universal."

"Pacific Rim," which is Del Toro's next helming gig, has been in pre-production for six months. "I was developing the visual bible for that," he said. "We hope to start shooting this September."

Regarding "Frankenstein," Del Toro has a meeting with Universal set for next week. Unfortunately, there are no meeting coming up about "Hellboy 3," because according to Del Toro: "There are no plans at all [for 'Hellboy 3']."

Marisa Tomei And Sarah Jessica Parker Circling Married And Cheating
published: 2011-03-12 15:52:17 Author: Mack Rawden
If I told you a sports movie was coming out and gave you no other information, what would you guess might be the vague construction of its plot? New coach comes aboard to impart winning attitude on hapless team. What about a horror movie? Psychopath terrorizes group of friends, mowing them down one by one. What about an independent film? That one’s a little harder, but I bet if I gave you three guesses one of them would involve philandering spouses. These story arcs might seem repetitive, to a degree they certainly are, but they exist because they’re proven winners. In the end, it doesn’t matter if the territory has been covered before, as long as the film has something new to say about it. Let’s hope that’s the case with Raymond de Felitta’s newest.

According to Variety, it’s aptly titled Married And Cheating, and it follows three couples as they navigate the ups and downs of their lives and deal with the ramifications of their decisions. The always reliable Marisa Tomei is negotiating to star alongside Sarah Jessica Parker, provided the financing comes together. These deals are always a bit dicey as you can’t sign anyone until the money’s done, but you can’t get money until people are signed. As a result, most of the time people verbally commit, checks are signed and then it all gets formalized.

I can’t help but be reminded of the underseen Your Friends And Neighbors. The Ben Stiller relationships indie never really caught on with viewers, but if Married And Cheating proves to be half as brilliant, we’ll all be in for something special.

Danny Huston Joins Nic Cage As He Tries To Find His Daughter In Medallion
published: 2011-03-12 10:55:56 Author: Mack Rawden
What do coaches tell professional athletes in the middle of a cold streak? Think about the fundamentals, get back to basics, we still have confidence in you. The same message should ring true for actors with a few flops in a row. Trying new things is great, but in times of trouble, it's always best to steer your way out using what's worked before, and for Nicolas Cage that's a big budget action film that's approximately forty percent too ridiculous to actually happen. Drive Angry 3D and that Witch one went a little too far, but this new scaled-back project Medallionshould do the trick, especially now that Danny Huston is on board.

If you, like most people, didn't see last year's Warrior's Way, you missed out on a truly epic villain performance from Huston. Murdering, raping and slaying ninjas, he was a true original, and with any luck director Simon West will let him go for it in Medallion too. According to IndieWire, the actor has officially boarded the thriller, which will see West reteam with his Con Air star Nic Cage. The plot follows a criminal (Cage) as he enlists his partner (Malin Akerman) to find his kidnapped daughter hidden somewhere in the trunk of a taxi cab. Asses will be kicked, heads will roll and hopefully, people will shell out to see it.

Medallion is about to start shooting in New Orleans. There's no official release date, but if it ends up being as good as it could be, next summer is probably a good guess.

Over 70 Photos From The Tree of Life
Source: Kinopoisk.ru March 13, 2011

Some interesting news items have come online (and disappeared) about Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life recently. From visual effects supervisor Dan Glass saying a bit too much about certain creatures appearing in the film (hence the pulled articles), to the running time being revealed as 2 hours and 18 minutes.

Now comes a rather large gallery of photos from the film at Kinopoisk.ru (via TheFilmStage.com). The pictures feature mostly Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain. You can check them out by clicking here or on the photo below!
Opening in limited theaters on May 27, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.

Streisand's Gypsy is a No-Go
Source: The Hartford Courant , Edward Douglas March 12, 2011

Back in January, there was a report in the New York Times that Barbara Streisand had met with Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents, co-writers of the 1959 Broadway musical Gypsy, to talk to them about playing Mama Rose in a movie version of the musical.

Well, it looks like that movie may not happen now according to Laurents, who spoke to the Hartford Courant's Frank Rizzo about how the project came together and how it now seems to not be happening anymore.

According to Laurents, it's Sondheim himself who questioned the reasons for making a movie based on their musical. Laurents told Rizzo the following story about talking with his partner who got cold feet:

"He said, 'What is the point of it?' And I said, 'They have this terrible version with Rosalind Russell wearing those black and white shoes.' And then Sondheim told me something that he got from the British -- and it's wonderful. He said, 'You want a record because the theater is ephemeral. But that's wrong. The theater's greatest essence is that it is ephemeral. You don't need a record. The fact that it's ephemeral means you can have different productions, different Roses on into infinity.'

"So I don't want it now. I don't want a definitive record. I want it to stay alive."

Laurents goes on to say that Streisand is disappointed with Sondheim's decision, especially because Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) was interested in directing the movie.

Streisand is staying busy following her appearance in Little Fockers by co-starring in the Seth Rogen comedy My Mother's Curse for Paramount with Anne (The Proposal) Fletcher directing.

James Cameron, Guillermo Del Toro and Neil Gaiman Working on $300 Million "Journey to the West"
Posted: March 10th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Chinese TV producer Zhang Jizhong has signed best-selling author Neil Gaiman (Coraline) to write the script for a $300 million adaptation of the ancient Chinese folk tale "Journey to the West."

Zhang said that James Cameron will advise on the script and technology issues, such as 3D. He added that several directors are currently being considered, including Guillermo del Toro, who is a close friend of Gaiman. "He has shown a lot of interest but he wants to see the treatment first," said Zhang. "Obviously the more celebrated the director, the busier they are."

"Journey" is a 500-year-old story by Wu Cheng'en, detailing the events that befall the Monkey King, armed with a magic staff, as he journeys with a monk, a pig spirit and a fish spirit to India to retrieve Buddha's scrolls in an effort to find enlightenment.

The goal is to make an epic on a Hollywood scale and to start out with three films initially, each with a budget of at least $100 million.

"The Wolfman" Remake Already in the Works
Posted: March 10th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
We just heard that Universal Pictures is trying to remake "Doom" and now comes word that studio is planning to remake "The Wolfman," which was released last year and was already a remake.

Bloody-Disgusting is reporting that Universal is currently speaking to writers about the new "Wolfman" movie that will be a period piece and stay closer to George Waggner's classic 1941 film.

Since Joe Johnston's "The Wolfman" grossed only $140 million globally on a $150 million budget, the remake is not being planned for the big screen. Instead, the hope is to start a new direct-to-video franchise similar to what Universal is doing with "Death Race."
