Idris Elba Confirmed for Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 22nd, 2011

I’m glad to see that Idris Elba (The Wire) is finally getting his due. A fantastic actor, he recently starred in Thor, is currently filming Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, and now it looks like he’ll be starring in Guillermo del Toro’s next film Pacific Rim. Earlier this month, we told you that Legendary Pictures wanted Elba for the flick. Now, Deadline reports that the actor has closed his deal, taking on a role that was originally envisioned for Tom Cruise. The film takes place in two different worlds, with monsters featuring prominently. We laid out some plot details back in March, but the story basically centers on humans piloting giant robots to battle aliens invading through a wormhole-like structure.
Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) is set to star, with Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) in talks to take on a role as well. Elba was previously mentioned as a contender for the starring role in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, but Jamie Foxx is now rumored to be the frontrunner for that role after Will Smith passed. Elba joining Pacific Rim all but confirms that he’s out of the running for Tarantino’s latest. http://collider.com/idris-elba-pacific-rim-2/98025/

Watchmen Writer Hired To Pen The Crow Reboot, Bradley Cooper Confirmed To Star

published: 2011-06-23 01:12:07 Author: Eric Eisenberg
While I'm fully aware that there are more than a couple people who disagree, the Zack Snyder-directed adaptation of Watchmen isn't a bad movie. For years the Alan Moore comic was perceived as unfilmable and the truth is that writer Alex Tse not only did a good job structuring the incredibly complex plot, but did it in a way that always respected the source material. Now Tse has been hired to script another comic book property that fans aren't necessarily happy to see being done.

Relativity Media has announced via press release that Tse has been hired to write the script for the upcoming "reinvention" of The Crow. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who previously helmed 28 Weeks Later, has been officially announced as the director, and Bradley Cooper has been announced as Eric Draven, the film's central protagonist who returns from the dead to seek vengeance against those that murdered his wife. The film is a "gritty reboot" (yes, the press release uses those words) of the 1994 Alex Proyas film starring Brandon Lee.

As interesting as it could be to see what Tse does with the storyline, I still don't understand why anybody thinks this is a good idea. The Proyas film is a true cult classic with a huge fanbase that isn't going to be happy to hear that a studio thinks their favorite film isn't good enough for modern audiences. Do yourself a favor and instead of wasting your time thinking about this, just head over to Netflix and check it out on instant watch.

Warren Beatty Wants An All-Star Cast For His Howard Hughes Biopic

published: 2011-06-22 23:14:44 Author: Katey Rich
Back in February a rumor surfaced that once Christopher Nolan was done once and for all with the Batman franchise, he would move on to a biopic about Howard Hughes, this one focusing on his later years as opposed to the glitzy Hollywood era depicted in Martin Scorsese's The Aviator. But before Nolan is even done with the Bat cowl, a Hollywood legend might beat him to the punch. Deadline reports that Warren Beatty is finally moving ahead on his long-gestating dream project, and yes, it's a biopic of Howard Hughes that he plans to star in and direct.

They've also got a list of the actors Beatty has been meeting with, and weirdly enough, it includes Alec Baldwin, who played a major character in The Aviator. It also includes a laundry list of interesting up and coming actors-- Andrew Garfield, Shia LaBeouf, Evan Rachel Wood and Rooney Mara-- plus Jack Nicholson and, of course, his wife Annette Bening. Deadline says it's not really a biopic, even though Beatty will play Hughes and the movie will focus on the mogul's later years. It's too early to say how it might affect Nolan's film, since both films are in early development and who knows what else Nolan has in mind, so you don't have to choose Team Warren vs. Team Christopher just yet. When the time comes, though, just remember who has the backup supply of Batarangs to prove his point.

Fox Sets Max Landis To Write Yet Another Frankenstein Movie

published: 2011-06-22 22:52:47 Author: Katey Rich
There are nearly half a dozen takes on the classic Frankenstein story in the works in Hollywood right now, but apparently there's still room for one more. Variety reports that Fox has hired Max Landis, the writer of the in-development screenplay Chronicle and, yes, the son of John, to work on the screenplay for a new Frankenstein film. There's no word on what kind of take he'd have on the story, but with Proof playwright David Auburn working on one that incorporates Mary Shelley herself into the story, Matt Reeves directing one about Dr. Frankenstein attempting to save his brother's life, and Sony planning a modern day version of the story, he's going to have to think pretty hard to come up with something original.

When you've got so many similar projects in development at the same time, it becomes a kind of an arms race where only one winner is possible-- it's very rare that we wind up with situations like the one between Universal and Relativity Media, as each works on their own Snow White story. Who knows how Landis's project will fit into the derby, though he'll have to move fast if he wants to beat out some of these other ones, which have been in development for years. There's no one on board to direct this one right now, though apparently Paul Greengrass and David Yates are on the wishlist.

Jessica Biel smiles for fans outside the set of Total Recall on Monday (June 20) in Toronto, Canada.
The 29-year-old actress signed autographs for onlookers after a busy day shooting scenes.
Earlier this month, Jessica arrived in Canada to begin filming the movie, which also stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, and Ethan Hawke.
Jess had to dye her hair a darker shade of brown for the flick!
“Her color is supposed to look very rich for the film. It’s definitely darker, but there are a lot of highlights all over,” Jess‘ hair consultant Tracey Cunningham said. “I also added a reddish gloss for extra warmth.” http://justjared.buzznet.com/2011/06/22/jessica-biel-darker-brown-for-total-recall/

David O. Russell Talking With Robert De Niro About The Silver Linings Playbook

published: 2011-06-20 14:46:51 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Apparently David O. Russell really wants to make a movie with Robert De Niro. When the director was still attached to make an adaptation of the video game Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, he made a deal with the actor to co-star alongside Mark Wahlberg and Joe Pesci. Now that Russell has moved on from that project, however, he apparently wants to bring De Niro with him.

According to Variety, The Ghetto Film School honored Russell with an award earlier today at New York's The Standard Hotel, with Melissa Leo and Blake Lively presenting the prize, but Russell showed up a half-hour late to the ceremony. What was his reasoning? Said the filmmaker, "I was in a meeting with Mr. De Niro, possibly about The Silver Linings Playbook: A Novel." Just like Uncharted, the project is already set with Mark Wahlberg to star and apparently Angelina Jolie has also met with the director about a role. In the film, a former teacher who has been released from a mental asylum tries to win back his ex-wife.

I wonder if this means that Pesci will be signing on soon as well. More importantly, this seems to solidify the idea that Silver Linings Playbook will be Russell's next film, beating out about 2 Guns, Cocaine Cowboys, a Russ Meyer biopic, The Fighter 2,and Maleficent. Then again, after what happeend with both Uncharted and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies I'm not willing to put money on it.

First Crazy, Stupid, Love Poster And Why Steve Carell Really Needs This To Work

published: 2011-06-20 14:32:35 Author: Josh Tyler
We’ve gotten our hands on the first poster for Crazy, Stupid, Love, Steve Carell’s first movie after his departure from NBC’s The Office. The movie stars Steve as an uptight 40-something whose perfect life is thrown into chaos when he discovers his wife is cheating on him and wants a divorce. He teams up with Ryan Gosling, who tries to play wingman for him in the dating world. Sounds like kind of generic stuff, but I think this could be a good move for Carell. More on that after the poster.

Here’s the first poster for Crazy, Stupid, Love:
Steve Carell really needs this movie to be good. Not just because it’s his first film without the built in support of The Office behind him, but because, well… when was the last time he made something people loved? Steve Carell hasn’t really done anything people truly care about since Little Miss Sunshine in 2006. Since then he’s wandered into a string of forgettable, high-concept, low-delivery comedies. Some of them made money, though not a ton, many of them didn’t. All of them were forgotten the minute they left theaters. Is anyone sitting around rewatching Evan Almighty? Who’s rushing out to buy Dinner for Schmucks on Blu-Ray? No one.

For awhile it seemed like Carell had huge comedic potential. He seemed poised to become the next big, classic, comedy star. He’s still working but it hasn’t really happened. Most of his mediocrity has come in the form of crazy, high-concept comedies like Schmucks in which he was sort of funny even though the movie never worked. So… maybe it’s time he tried something a little more grounded?

There’s enough in this premise that could work, and Carell’s ideally suited to play a lonely, sad sack divorcee. It's characters like that which made us fall in love with him in the first place. Crazy, Stupid, Love could be just what Steve Carell’s post-Office career needs.

Megan Fox Fired From Transformers Because Steven Spielberg Fears Hitler?

published: 2011-06-20 12:14:27 Author: Josh Tyler
There are a million theories out there, attempting to explain Mega Fox’s sudden dismissal from the Transformers franchise and subsequent replacement by a human catfish. The one she’d like you to believe is that she simply quit because she was tired of robots and stuff. We’ve always believed, however, that Michael Bay didn’t like it when she called him Hitler, and so he fired her. But maybe it wasn’t Bay who didn’t want her.

Steven Spielberg is the executive producer of Transformers and the Daily Mail claims that Michael Bay recently told them it was Spielberg who made them fire her. Bay says, "You know the Hitler thing. Steven (Spielberg) said, fire her right now.”

I’m not sure I buy it. I guess we’re supposed to think that Spielberg is Jewish and thus really touchy about Hitler stuff, but he’s also an adult and I’d hope that would mean he’s able to, you know, apply logic to a situation. What Fox originally said was that Michael Bay, “…wants to be like Hitler on his sets, and he is. So he’s a nightmare to work for.” It was a metaphor for cruelty, not a way of threatening to march the Jews off to camps all over again. Maybe it was a dumb metaphor, but it’s not like Spielberg and Bay hired Megan Fox because she was smart. At the time Michael Bay seemed to get it, and simply fired back some snarky comments at her and moved on.

It seems weird that Spielberg would be so overly sensitive about his Jewish heritage that he’d run around firing people for simply using the word “Hitler”, as if he’s a professor at Hogwarts trying to keep people from saying “Voldemort”. It seems weirder still that Michael Bay would actually tell anyone that his boss is that ridiculous, even if it were true. I think the thing to keep in mind here is that the report of this Michael Bay quote from the Daily Mail, where there as likely to invent a fake quote as they are to report a real one. Don’t be surprised if Bay comes out and tells everyone he was misquoted, some time soon.

Guillermo Del Toro Would Love to Direct Maleficent
Jun 21, 2011 by Courtney O.
Hero Complex recently spoke with Guillermo del Toro and asked the filmmaker if he would be interested in directing Disney's upcoming Maleficent feature, which is a retelling of Sleeping Beauty from the point of view of the sinister green witch who transforms into a majestic black and purple dragon.
Tim Burton was previously attached to direct the film, but has since dropped out.

"Let me put it this way, if they ask I'll take the meeting," Guillermo del Toro said. "I think Maleficent's dragon is the only design with the wings separate from the front legs, the only time that design has ever worked. And let me tell you how much of a fan I am. I have a collection of over two or three dozen Maleficent figures, some of them four or five feet tall. I own about 10 pieces of conceptual art from Sleeping Beauty that include the dragon and a lot more pieces that are just from Sleeping Beauty. It's one of my three favorite Disney films. I would love to. But I don't want to put too many hopes on it. They're probably on a fast track and I cannot take any more projects on a fast track."

No production date has been set.

Maleficent comes to theaters in 2013 and stars Angelina Jolie. The film is directed by Tim Burton.

Alex Proyas to Produce Indie Assassin Film FUTURE PERFECT; Shane Abbess to Direct

by Jason Barr   Posted: May 26th, 2011

Director Alex Proyas (The Crow) has signed on to produce an independent assassin project entitled Future Perfect. Proyas will oversee the project for director Shane Abbess (Gabriel) according to 24 Frames which cites the film as being in a similar vein as Joe Wright’s Hanna. Future Perfect was written by Brian McGreevy and Lee Shipman, the same scribes behind the Zorro reboot, Zorro Reborn. While additional plot details on the project are sparse, the report claims that the script involves two eugenically created assassins, one an older man and the other a young girl, who are on the run from an unspecified pursuer (the same top-secret government agency that funded their creation, perhaps?).
In addition to Future Perfect, Proyas also has an adaptation of Milton’s Paradise Lost and Dracula: Year Zero currently hanging out in development. There is no word on how Perfect‘s Australian-based production will affect Proyas’ work on each of those projects, a notion that may be worthy of concern given his “godfather” role on this latest project. As for Abbess, although 2007′s Gabriel is his only directorial effort to date, at one point the filmmaker was attached to helm Duncan Jones’ Source Code (for which he received a “Thanks” credit in the film). http://collider.com/alex-proyas-future-perfect-shane-abbess/93231/

"Akira" Loses Star and Director

Posted: May 26th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Things were going so well for Warner Bros big screen adaptation of "Akira" graphic novel. Director Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli) was set to helm and Keanu Reeves was in talks to star.

The plan was to use Reeves to attract other A-listers to this $100 million film. Unfortunately, Reeves turned down the offer and now comes word that Hughes dropped out as well.

Deadline says that there were serious creative differences between Hughes and the studio, which will move Hughes to another project while keeping "Akira" on a fast track. A director will likely be found soon.

And regarding actors, Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy were given the script for the role of Tetsuo, and Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix were courted for Kaneda.

Exclusive: Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel Officially Cast in TOTAL RECALL; Filming Starts Monday in Toronto [UPDATED]

Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Colin Farrell Total Recall remake slice
Last month we heard that Sony Pictures had offered Kate Beckinsale the role of Lori opposite Colin Farrell in their Total Recall remake.  With her husband, Len Wiseman, directing the project and given that they previously collaborated on the Underworld movies, it wasn’t really much of a surprise.  However, sources have now told us that she’s officially signed on and Jessica Biel is going to play the other female lead (Melina).  In addition to the casting news, we’ve been told filming starts Monday in Toronto.
For those playing catch up on the remake, Colin Farrell is set to star, Ethan Hawke has a cameo, and Bryan Cranston is poised to play the villain.  The remake will apparently be closer to Phillip K. Dick’s source material than the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger flick. Farrell plays a factory worker who begins to believe he’s a spy for either the nation stat Euromerica or New Shanghai, but he doesn’t know which.  Hit the jump for a recap of what we know about the film so far.

Confirmed: Jeff Bridges to Co-Star with Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D.; Filming in Boston This September

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 25th, 2011 at 2:35 pm

jeff-bridges-ripd-slice
Last month, we reported that Jeff Bridges was in talks to co-star with Ryan Reynolds in the adaptation of the Dark Horse comic series R.I.P.D. The comics are about a group of dead lawmen in the “Rest in Peace Department” who try to keep other dead folks in line.  The Wrap now confirms that Bridges is on board to play Roy Powell, whom producer Neal Moritz described as “a gunslinger who’s been dead for hundreds of years.”  Reynolds plays Powell’s partner, Nick Cruz, a recently murdered cop who’s out for revenge.  Powell was originally set to be played by Zach Galifianakis, but he dropped out over concerns that the project would be delayed if Warner Bros. exercised Reynolds’ option on Green Lantern 2.  However, we have now confirmed that filming is set for mid-September in Boston.
My main concern over this project rests with director Robert Schwentke.  While the action scenes in Red were competent enough, he had a tough time finding the comedy and R.I.P.D. is being billed as a “supernatural comedy”.  In the meantime, we’ll wait and see if Reynolds will move to this film or if he’ll be headed back to Oa.  http://collider.com/ripd-jeff-bridges-ryan-reynolds/92921/

Trailer for Alexander Payne’s THE DESCENDANTS Starring George Clooney

It may not feature angry 3D sharks, but Alexander Payne’s new film The Descendants might be a better movie.  The film stars George Clooney as the “back-up” parent to two daughters.  He must step up when his wife suffers a serious boating accident off of Waikiki, and then he learns the hard truth that she was cheating on him.  Judging by the trailer, the flick looks to have the same strong character relationships tinged with humor and sadness as seen in Payne’s previous films.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard, Beau Bridges, and Robert Forster.  The Descendants opens December 16th. http://collider.com/descendants-trailer/92891/

The release of David Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a little over six months away.  With that in mind, Sony has begun the film’s marketing campaign and a red-band trailer has already rolled out overseas (although technically it’s just “unrated” because the MPAA doesn’t evaluate international trailers).  While I’ve been checking YouTube to see that trailer, Deadline reports that a domestic green-band trailer is set to arrive Thursday, June 2nd so we won’t have to wait long to get our first look at the film.

Matthew Modine and Tom Conti Join THE DARK KNIGHT RISES [UPDATED]
by Adam Chitwood Posted: May 20th, 2011
Just yesterday production began on what will be director Christopher Nolan’s final film in his Batman trilogy: The Dark Knight Rises. Today, the viral campaign for the film kicked off, giving us our first look at Tom Hardy as Bane, and now two more actors have been added to the cast. Variety reports that Matthew Modine and Tom Conti have signed on to the film. With the plot under lock and key, there’s no word on who the two actors will be playing. However, since this is Batman and every piece of news is greeted with fanfare, I wouldn’t be surprised if the two play fairly minor roles. Nolan similarly cast known actors in smaller parts for the last two Batman flicks (Anthony Michael Hall, Rutger Hauer, etc.).

The Dark Knight Rises also stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, and Michael Caine. It opens July 20, 2012.

[Update: Variety's story has been updated to say that 11-year-old Joey King (Ramona and Beezus) has joined the cast as well]

Darren Aronofsky Wanted for MALEFICENT and MOSES?
by Adam Chitwood Posted: May 20th, 2011 at 2:53 pm

Since dropping out of Fox’s The Wolverine, director Darren Aronofsky has been linked to a number of projects. Everyone wants to know what he’ll choose as his follow up to the smashing success that was Black Swan. Earlier this month, it was reported that he was eyeing the sci-fi flick Human Nature with George Clooney attached to star. Now, Badass Digest reports that the director is being courted for two other high-profile projects: Disney wants him to helm Maleficent and Warner Bros. is courting the director for Moses.

Maleficent just recently lost its director, as Tim Burton bowed out a few days ago, but David Yates has been mentioned as a possible replacement. The film is set to start Angelina Jolie as the notorious Sleeping Beauty villain. Moses is one of two dueling projects centered on the biblical figure. Warner Bros’ version focuses on the Exodus, while the Fox version is said to be more in the vein of 300 (because violence and sex is exactly what the Old Testament is lacking). While neither of these sounds particularly up Aronofsky’s alley, neither did a sequel to Wolverine. Personally, I’d much rather see him take on that other biblical project: his long-talked-about Noah.

Tom Cruise Confirmed for Joseph Kosinski’s OBLIVION
by Adam Chitwood Posted: May 20th, 2011 at 2:20 pm

Tom Cruise has committed to star in Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski’s sci-fi flick Oblivion (also referred to as Horizons). Kosinski was originally going to make the film at Disney, until the Mouse House decided the PG-13 material didn’t fit with their model and dropped the film. They allowed the director to shop the project around, and it landed at Universal with a budget of $100 million. The script, originally written by William Monahan then rewritten by Karl Gajdusek, is based on an idea hatched by Kosinski himself.

The story takes place in an apocalyptic future where humans have been forced to live in clouds above the uninhabitable Earth below. Deadline reports that Cruise will play a soldier stuck on the planet, working on drones that patrol the surface searching out and destroying a “savage” alien life form. Naturally, he meets a woman who crash-lands and gets him thinking about his larger role in life. Production begins this October. The report also states that Cruise has also been mentioned in connection with Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. More after the jump.

Ethan Hawke Reveals His TOTAL RECALL Cameo Involves 5-Page Monologue
by Adam Chitwood Posted: May 20th, 2011 at 1:26 pm

While not much is known about the nature of Ethan Hawke’s cameo in director Len Wiseman’s (Live Free or Die Hard) remake of Total Recall, the actor recently revealed that this won’t be your quick-scene cameo. In speaking with Vulture, Hawke said that he’s shooting his scene next week and he’s doing a 5-page monologue, so it’s safe to assume that his character plays a bit of a crucial role in the flick.

Colin Farrell is set to star in the remake, which will apparently be closer to Phillip K.

SEINFELD Writer David Mandel to Write FLETCH Reboot
by Matt Goldberg Posted: May 20th, 2011 at 10:59 am

Warner Bros. has hired screenwriter David Mandel to write the reboot of Fletch. As we reported back in February, Warner Bros. picked up the rights to Gregory Mcdonald’s mystery novels for what they’re calling not a remake but a “re-imagining”, which is studio-speak for remake. However, since two of the Fletch novels were previously adapted (1985’s Fletch and 1989’s Fletch Lives, both starring Chevy Chase as the eponymous reporter), I’ll call it a reboot. But whatever you want to call it, Warner Bros. says that this new version “will be a smart action comedy that plays out on a bigger canvas than the previous movies.”

Per THR, “The 11 mystery books, the first of which was published in 1974, center on a reporter named I.M. Fletcher who juggles writing exposes while avoiding headaches caused by his two ex-wives.” Since I’ve never read any of the Fletch novels, I don’t know if Mandel’s the right guy for the job, but his credits include Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Sacha Baron Cohen’s upcoming comedy The Dictator, and the underrated EuroTrip (that’s right: I’ll go to bat for EuroTrip), so I think Warners at least has a talented writer on board. The project is a high-priority for the studio and they’re looking at it as a vehicle for an A-list comedy star. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the first novel.

Aaron Eckhart to Hunt Villainous Peter Pan in New Movie

Posted: May 10th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

There are a lot of "Peter Pan" projects in the works, including a prequel that has Channing Tatum attached. Today, ScreenDaily has learned that Warner Bros is developing its own version of the story, which will be much darker than previously seen.

Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) has signed on to play Captain Hook, who has been re-imagined as a tormented former detective on the trail of a childlike kidnapper (Peter Pan). AnnaSophia Robb (Soul Surfer) will portray Wendy, the lone survivor who leaves an asylum to help in the hunt. And Sean Bean ("Game of Thrones") has been cast as Smee, the chief detective and Hook's only ally on the force.

Guillermo Del Toro was once attached to direct the film, but has since been replaced by Ben Hibon, who worked in the animation department on "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1." Filming is scheduled to begin in October in Eastern Europe.

Hugo Weaving Confirmed for "The Hobbit"

Posted: May 10th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Back on May 1st, director Peter Jackson posted a photo of him and Hugo Weaving on the set of "The Hobbit." Many assumed that Weaving will be reprising the role of Elrond, but Jackson said that the actor simply stopped by for a visit.

Now, Ian McKellen has updated his official blog with news that Weaving is officially on board.

He wrote: "
Martin Freeman has left 'The Hobbit.' This is not another April Fool, just a May Fact. Before signing as Bilbo, Martin had agreed to make three 90-minute TV films in London, again playing Dr Watson to Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes.

No worries: he'll be back in Middle Earth after our first hiatus, during which Peter Jackson will have spare time to edit the scenes already completed. The rest of the cast remains on duty for another few weeks, working on hobbit-less sections of the film. These involve dwarves of course but also elves, with Hugo Weaving back for a stretch as Lord Elrond.

"Men in Black" Director to Helm "Dinosaurs Versus Aliens"

Posted: May 10th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Barry Sonnenfeld, who is currently filming the third "Men in Black" film, has come up with a new alien story, which he is calling "Dominion: Dinosaurs Versus Aliens."

The director has teamed with comic book writer Grant Morrison to develop a graphic novel and a movie. Morrison, whose comic book work includes "Batman" and "The Invisibles," will write both the graphic novel and the script. Sonnenfeld will direct the film. Check out the first concept art below.

The story chronicles a secret prehistoric world war battle. When an alien invasion attacks Earth in the age of the dinosaurs, the planet's only hope is the giants that roam the planet with, it turns out, a lot more intelligence than previously realized.

"Growing up, my fascination was all things dinosaur, and as an adult, I've had some success making films about aliens, so this is a dream come true," said Sonnenfeld. "We've been trying to do a project ever since."

Ethan Hawke Joins "Total Recall" Remake

Posted: May 10th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Ethan Hawke has joined the cast of "Total Recall," Columbia Pictures' remake of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger film that has Colin Farrell starring.

The new story ditches the Martian storyline and instead involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, with Douglas Quaid (Farrell) a factory worker in the latter who begins to believe he is a spy, although he doesn't know for which side.

The movie has been casting to make its June start in Toronto with Bryan Cranston playing the villain. Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel are in negotiations for the female leads. Hawke's role is being kept secret.

Ethan Hawke to Cameo in TOTAL RECALL Remake

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 10th, 2011

Ethan Hawke has joined Len Wiseman’s upcoming remake of Total Recall.  The film stars Colin Farrell as a factory worker who begins to believe he’s a spy for either the nation stat Euromerica or New Shanghai, but he doesn’t know which.  The movie is based on the Philip K. Dick story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” and was loosely adapted back in 1990 as an Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie directed by Paul Verhoeven.  The movie has ditched the concept of going to Mars because I guess as a country we’ve given up on that dream.
Heat Vision reports that Hawke’s role is being kept under wraps and that it’s a cameo in nature.  I’m not exactly sure why you’d cast Hawke in a cameo when he wasn’t in the original film, but I’m not going to argue against his participation.  The film also stars Bryan Cranston as villain Vilos Cohaagen, and Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel are in talks to play the female leads Lori and Melina, respectively.  Total Recall opens August 3, 2012.

Aaron Eckhart, AnnaSophia Robb, and Sean Bean Join Ben Hibon’s Dark PETER PAN Re-Imagining

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: May 10th, 2011

There are various Peter Pan re-imaginings scooting their way through development.  There’s the terrible-sounding prequel Pan that stars Channing Tatum and sets Peter and Captain Hook as brothers.  Disney is considering the a promising adaptation of Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson’s Peter and the Starcatchers, which has Peter and the Lost Boys as the pirates.  And then there’s my favorite among the adaptations—an action-thriller, also titled Pan, directed by Ben Hibon.  If you’re not familiar with Hibon, he directed the beautiful animated sequence in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1Pan was originally set up as a directing vehicle for Guillermo del Toro, but Hibon came on board to helm the picture last November.  The story is a dark re-imagining of J.M. Barrie’s tale which has Captain Hook as a haunted former police detective in pursuit of a childlike kidnapper.
Now the first cast members have been revealed and it’s an exciting line-up: Aaron Eckhart, Sean Bean, and AnnaSophia Robb.  Hit the jump for more details on their characters.

Casting Call: Alec Baldwin Drops out of ROCK OF AGES; Jean Reno Joins I, ALEX CROSS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 10th, 2011

This afternoon we have some casting and some un-casting to report.  In un-casting news, THR reports that Alec Baldwin has dropped out of Adam Shankman’s musical Rock of Ages.  You may recall Baldwin dropped out of Men in Black III to do Rock of Ages back in March.  Baldwin was set to play “Dennis Dupree, the owner of the Bourbon Room, the Sunset Boulevard nightclub at the center of the movie.”  No reason has been given for Baldwin’s departure, although it’s possible there was a scheduling conflict with Woody Allen’s upcoming comedy.  While it’s an unfortunate loss for the project, Rock of Ages isn’t lacking for stars since the cast features Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Malin Akerman, Bryan Cranston, Mary J. Blige, Julianne Hough, and newcomer Diego Boneta.  Rock of Ages is set to open on June 1, 2012.
Hit the jump for casting news regarding I, Alex Cross.

**Robert Zemeckis Takes FLIGHT With Denzel Washington **Kate Beckinsale Offered Lori in TOTAL RECALL; Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson Up for Melina **"The Crow" Reboot May Not Happen Due to Lawsuit **Ryan Reynolds' Restricted "The Change-Up" Trailer **"Takers" Helmer in Talks to Direct "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" Sequel

Robert Zemeckis Takes FLIGHT With Denzel Washington

by Brendan Bettinger   Posted: April 20th, 2011

After a decade devoted to motion capture, Robert Zemeckis is looking to return to live action for his next film.  Disney’s cancellation of the mo-cap Beatles ode Yellow Submarine surely was a wake up call.   Zemeckis needs time, though, to ease back into the land of the living.  The director flirted with Superman and a Wizard of Oz remake, and the time travel tale Timeless remains a possibility.  And Zemeckis could always revive the Who Framed Roger Rabbit sequel that exists in a constant state of development.
Paramount has added another option, Flight, and it sounds damn promising.  The script by John Gatins (Coach Carter) centers on an alcoholic/drug addict pilot.  And Denzel Washington is “loosely attached” to star.  Details after the break.

Kate Beckinsale Offered Lori in TOTAL RECALL; Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson Up for Melina

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: April 20th, 2011

Sony Pictures has offered Kate Beckinsale  the role of Lori opposite Colin Farrell in their Total Recall remake.  Diane Kruger, Kate Bosworth, and Jessica Biel have each read for the part of Lori.  This is the first time Beckinsale has been linked to the film, though her involvement is no surprise: Beckinsale is slightly married to the director, Len Wiseman.  They previously collaborated on the Underworld movies.
If Beckinsale accepts, Biel has a backup; early reports suggested the actress is after the role of Melina.  Yet that may prove yet another dead end for Ms. Biel.  Deadline hears Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson are “the serious contenders” for the role.  Bryan Cranston is confirmed to play villain Vilos Cohaagen in the remake.  Read more on the story after the jump.

Kate Beckinsale Offered Role in Husband's "Total Recall" Remake

Posted: April 21st, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Deadline has learned that Kate Beckinsale has been offered one of the two female lead role in the upcoming "Total Recall" remake, which stars Colin Farrell and is directed by Beckinsale's husband Len Wiseman (Underworld).

If she accepts, the actress will play Lori, who was portrayed by Sharon Stone in the original 1990 Paul Verhoeven-directed film. Stone played the happy wife of Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who eventually turns against him.

The other female role is of Melina, played by Rachel Ticotin in the original. Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson have emerged as front-runners. Earlier this month, Jessica Biel was offered one of the leads, but apparently it didn't work out.

"Total Recall" will begin shooting next month for a August 3rd, 2012 release.

"The Crow" Reboot May Not Happen Due to Lawsuit

Posted: April 21st, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

We recently reported that Relativity Media is working on "The Crow" reboot and is in talks with Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) to star and Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) to direct. The plan was to begin filming in the fall, but now it looks like that may not happen.

The Weinstein Company has filed a lawsuit again Relativity, claiming there's "a written contract signed by everybody" which gives the Weinsteins exclusive worldwide distribution rights to "The Crow" reboot.

The original was distributed by the Weinsteins at Miramax back in 1994 and grossed $50.6 million domestically. "[Relativity head Ryan] Kavanaugh was not going to honor that contract," said Weinsteins' lawyer Bert Fields. "Apparently, he's going to sell these rights to others. He made a bunch of threats. Some people may submit to that kind of arrogant conduct, but we're not going to do it. If anybody tries to buy these distribution rights in 'The Crow,' they are buying nothing but a lawsuit and they will get sued."

Relativity quickly replied, stating that the lawsuit is nothing more than a threat and it will not interfere with the development of the project.

Robert Zemeckis May Return to Live-Action with "Flight"

Posted: April 21st, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Paramount Pictures is in discussions with Robert Zemeckis to direct "Flight," a live-action film written by John Gatins (Real Steel, Coach Carter).

During the last decade, Zemeckis has focused on animated films like "A Christmas Carol," "Beowulf" and "The Polar Express," but he is better known for live-action movies like "Cast Away," "Forrest Gump," and "Back to the Future."

"Flight" is fictional tale that revolves around a commercial airline pilot named Whip Whitaker. When his plane malfunctions and a crash seems imminent, he saves the day with some heroic flying and manages to land the plane with minimal casualties. He's instantly hailed as a hero, but as an investigation into the cause of the crash unfolds, it becomes clear that he was flying under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

The film is the pilot's journey as he is encouraged to wear a hero label he thinks he doesn't deserve, while the pilot's union and airline try to keep the facts under cover because of the high stakes involved.
