Emma Watson Covers 'Harper's Bazaar UK' August 2011
Emma Watson shines in the sunlight on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar UK’s August 2011 issue, on newsstands July 7.
Here is what the 21-year-old Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 actress had to share with the mag (via Daily Mail):
On why she left school: “Leaving Brown had nothing to do with bullying, as the media have been suggesting recently. I have never been bullied in my life. Like a lot of other students at Brown, I might spend my third year abroad.”
On getting angry while acting: “My acting tutor said the hardest thing for me was to get angry. I almost broke down in tears when they tried to get me to be angry. I said, ‘I can’t do it, I just can’t do it.’ I keep all of that really bottled up somewhere and I feel unleashing it would be the scariest thing – and to let myself be powerful, sexy, all those things, it’s scary for me. [Even playing the bad girl in this shoot] felt a bit uncomfortable and awkward, it didn’t come naturally at all.”
On her self-image while in Hollywood: “I feel if I have to work out four hours a day, and count the calories of everything I put in my mouth, and have Botox at 22, and obsess about how I look the whole time, I will go mad, I will absolutely lose it.”

Snow White And The Huntsman Will Be The First In A Trilogy
published: 2011-07-01 17:34:19 Author: Eric Eisenberg

A year ago I would have bet cold hard cash that one of the two Snow White projects in development - Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman and Relativity Media's untitled Snow White project - would eventually fade away. Sadly, that didn't happen. Both projects have writers, producers, directors, fully-stocked casts and, worst of all, release dates that that are only two-and-a-half months apart. But guess what? The Snow White love fest won't stop there.

Joe Roth, who kicked off the whole fairy tale fad by producing last year's worldwide smash hit Alice in Wonderland, has informed EW that Snow White and the Huntsman is the first film in a proposed trilogy that will see the three principal characters - played by Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, and Charlize Theron - return multiple times. But while the movie will be left open-ended in some respects, apparently it's also a contained story, Roth saying, "This story will end, but there will be questions remaining for these three characters." (the three in question being Snow White, the Huntsman, and the Evil Queen). While Relativity Media's version of the tale is already in production, Snow White and the Huntsman is scheduled to being lensing in August.

Roth also expanded on the role of the Huntsman, who is apparently a bounty hunter-like figure. In the story, Snow White has escaped after 11 years in captivity and the evil queen hires the Huntsman to find the missing girl and cut out her heart. The problem is that he doesn't have it in him to kill her and instead teaches her to survive in the woods and evade the Queen's armies. Said Roth of tte character, "He’s not a nice guy, but not only that he’s someone who has lost hope and lost faith. He has lost his wife, given up on everything." Directed by Rupert Sanders, the film also stars Sam Claflin, Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Eddie Izzard, Ray Winstone, Toby Jones, Stephen Graham, Eddie Marsan, Lily Cole, and Sam Spruell.

Rod Serling Biopic In The Works

published: 2011-07-01 13:41:57 Author: Eric Eisenberg
What's not to love about Rod Serling? The man is an absolute icon in the horror/science-fiction community thanks to his work on shows like The Twilight Zone, Night Gallery; he has one of the greatest voices in the history of narration; and the man's eyebrows are legendary. What you may not know, however, is that the man's story is quite incredible, and now he'll be getting a feature film made about him.

Bureau of Moving Pictures has made a deal to make a biopic about the life of Rod Serling, according to Deadline. Stanley Weiser, who is best known for co-writing Wall Street with Oliver Stone in 1987, will write the script while Andrew Meieran and Carol Serling, Rod's widow, will produce. Serling had quite an adventurous life before becoming a part of show business history, serving in the Pacific during World War II. Both a paratrooper and a member of a demolition squad, the horrors that the writer witnessed would later deeply affect the writer's work. In addition to his work on television, Serling also had experience in the movie industry, working with Michael Wilson on the first Planet of the Apes. A smoker his entire life, Serling died in 1975 at the age of 50.

This may seem kind of weird, but if they're looking for a proper director to handle the material, I think they should give some consideration to Tim Burton. My favorite movie from the filmmaker will always be Ed Wood, and while the tone would obviously differ greatly, I think Burton would has the darker sensibilities to do the project the right way. That said, I don't think Johnny Depp should play Rod Serling. I think it's Jon Hamm or go home.

Count of Monte Cristo Remake That's Heading To Warner Bros. Has A Twist

published: 2011-07-01 08:14:54 Author: Sean O'Connell
We are in an odd, swirling cycle of literary and historical remakes, with Hollywood ramping up productions of previously picked-over source materials to re-introduce legends like King Arthur and The Three Musketeers to fresh audiences. Up next in the déjà vu machine, according to reports, will be another of Alexandre Dumas’ adventure novels, albeit with a modern twist.

Warner Bros., which also rebooted Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes with great financial success, will mount a futuristic version of Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo, putting the project on a fast track and pitching it out to potential directors. Variet  says screenwriter Ian Shorr has conceived a idea that sets the classic tale of a man wrongfully imprisoned in a futuristic setting, yet one that we assume still taps into the themes of vengeance and repentance that are crucial to Dumas’ novel.

This isn’t Hollywood’s first dance with the Count -- far from it. As far back as 1934, there have been film and television adaptations of Dumas’ timeless work. The most recent, directed by Kevin Reynolds in 2002, was a straightforward interpretation that starred Jim Caviezel, Guy Pearce, future Superman Henry Cavill and Luis Guzman of all people. It made $75 million at the global box office.

While I’d much rather support projects built on a foundation of original ideas and plots, I understand Hollywood’s need to revisit properties with brand recognition. And if you are going to do another Monte Cristo, setting it in a completely different time frame at least gives it a shot of creative juice that could help it stand apart from its predecessors. So much of this film now relies on the casting, as well as who directs, so let’s reserve judgment for now, see what pieces fall into place, and revisit the Monte Cristo revisiting in time.

Christopher Meloni Up for MAN OF STEEL

by Adam Chitwood  Posted: June 24th, 2011

Following his surprising exit from NBC’s Law and Order: SVU, Christopher Meloni just landed himself a not too shabby gig. Deadline reports that the actor is currently in negotiations to star in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. There’s no word on what part he’s up for, but the report states that it’s a “major role” (one hopes it involves fridge-humping). Henry Cavill is set as Superman himself, while Amy Adams will take on Lois Lane. Warner Bros. rounded up some A-list talent for Superman’s parents: Kevin Costner and Diane Lane will play Clark Kent’s adoptive Earth parents, while Russell Crowe is poised to star as biological father Jor-El and Julia Ormond recently entered talks to play his Kryptonian mother Lara Lor-Van.
On the villain side, Michael Shannon will be doing his evil thing as General Zod and Antje Traue is set as Faora. Casting should be close to complete by now, with production set to begin next month in Vancouver. Snyder directs from a script by David Goyer, with Christopher Nolan producing. Man of Steel is eying a holiday 2012 release.  http://collider.com/christopher-meloni-man-of-steel/98734/

Robin Williams Rows GENTLY DOWN THE STREAM; Ben Barnes Is THE SEVENTH SON

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 24th, 2011

We have couple of casting bits to bring you this Friday afternoon. First up, Robin Williams has joined writer/director Justin Zackham’s (writer, The Bucket List) wedding comedy Gently Down the Stream. Williams brings another star to an already stellar cast that includes Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Amanda Seyfried, and Katherine Heigl. Per Variety, the Oscar-winning actor will play the role of Father Monaghan in the pic that tells the story of a long-divorced couple (De Niro and Keaton) who pretend that they’re still married for the sake of their adopted son’s upcoming wedding. Rounding out the Gently Down the Stream cast are Susan Sarandon, Patricia Rae, and Ben Barnes. Production on the film is expected to begin this July.
Speaking of Ben Barnes, The Chronicles of Narnia actor has signed on to star alongside Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore in the Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures fantasy project The Seventh Son. Variety reports that Barnes is in line for the title role (the same one Sam Claffin was once in talks for) which is described as “the seventh son of a seventh son” who learns all things wizard-related. Directed by Sergei Bodrov (Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan), the pic is based on Joseph Delaney’s young adult book series. First Image of John Cusack as Edgar Allen Poe in THE RAVEN – Updated With Official Synopsis

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 24th, 2011

john-cusack-the-raven-image-slice
The first image of John Cusack as Edgar Allen Poe in the thriller The Raven has landed online. Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), the film is set in 1849 and stars Cusack as the iconic author/poet who joins forces with a detective in hopes of stopping a murderer who is inspired by Poe’s work. Luke Evans, Alice Eve, and Brendan Gleeson also star in the pic. I’m really liking the Se7en vibe the logline gives and, as a fan of both Poe and Cusack, I’m pretty excited about checking this one out when it hits theaters on March 9th, 2012.
Update: The official synopsis has been sent out.  It’s below the picture.
Directed by: James McTeigue
Written by:  Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare
Cast: John Cusack, Luke Evans, Alice Eve, Brendan Gleeson and Oliver Jackson-Cohen
Produced by: Mark D Evans, Trevor Macy, and Aaron Ryder
Executive Producer: Jesus Martinez

Synopsis:

In this gritty thriller, Edgar Allen Poe (John Cusack, Being John Malkovich) joins forces with a young Baltimore detective (Luke Evans, Immortals) to hunt down a mad serial killer who’s using Poe’s own works as the basis in a string of brutal murders. Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), the film also stars Alice Eve (Sex and the City 2), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Faster).
When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper—part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story.
Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe’s writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author’s help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late.

Paul Haggis in Talks to Pen Spy Film Based on Author Daniel Silva’s Character Gabriel Allon

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 24th, 2011

Two-time Oscar-winner Paul Haggis (Crash) is in talks to script a spy film for Universal based on Daniel Silva’s popular character, Gabriel Allon. While possible, it’s unclear whether or not the writer/director would also helm the film given that the project is still in the very early stages of development. For those unfamiliar with the character (a.k.a myself just 30 minutes ago), Allon has appeared in ten of Silva’s novels and is described as a fortysomething Mossad agent who restores art as part of his “quiet job” and covertly investigates terrorist activities as part of his “slightly less quiet job.”
24 Frames reports that the exact details of Haggis’ script are unknown but that Universal is hoping to turn the property into a franchise (surprise, surprise). Former NBC head Jeff Zucker will produce the pic which joins the Bourne franchise as the second spy property in active development at the studio. For a taste of what could be coming in Haggis’ script, hit the jump for a synopsis of Gabriel Allon’s first appearance, the Daniel Silva novel The Kill Artist. http://collider.com/paul-haggis-gabriel-allon-daniel-silva/98632/

Lily Cole and Sam Spruell Added to SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 24th, 2011

Lily Cole (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) and Sam Spruell (The Hurt Locker) have joined the ever-expanding cast of director Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman. Cole and Spruell become the latest in a long line of casting news for the pic which has added the likes of Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Eddie Izzard, Toby Jones, and Ray Winstone this week alone. Per Variety, Cole will play Greta while Spruell will make a turn as Finn, the Queen’s henchman who is responsible for finding and killing Snow White and the Huntsman. In addition to the already mentioned cast, Snow White and the Huntsman also stars Chris Hemsworth (the Huntsman), Charlize Theron (the Queen), and Kristen Stewart (Snow White). The film is slated to begin production this fall while eyeing a June 1st, 2012 theatrical release. http://collider.com/lily-cole-snow-white-and-the-huntsman-sam-spruell/98600/

First Official Photo of John Cusack as Edgar Allen Poe in "The Raven" Thriller

Posted: June 24th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Relativity Media has unveiled the first official photo of John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe in "The Raven" thriller, directed by James McTeigue (Ninja Assassin, V for Vendetta) and set to hit theaters on March 9th, 2012. Check it out below.

The new movie is a fictional story about what would happen if a serial killer challenged poet Edgar Allan Poe (Cusack) to solve a series of killings inspired by his own stories.

"It's sort of 'Se7en' meets a series of Poe stories. It's set in 1850s Baltimore, and it's about creating Poe's version of 1850s Baltimore, him moving through it. So it has a lot of the Poe stories interwoven into it," McTeigue previously stated, adding that Poe's real life will be used in the film as well

First Official Look At John Cusack In The Raven

published: 2011-06-24 16:59:21 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Though I'm not entirely sure why, I'm actually looking forward to James McTeigue's The Raven. Admittedly it's kind of strange to take one of history's greatest writers, Edgar Allan Poe, and turn him into a detective, but it could be fun and has a solid cast lined up in John Cusack, Alice Eve, Luke Evans and Brendan Gleeson. Back in November, some on-set photographers managed to get a shot of Cusack in costume, but today the first official photo has been released.

Though the new still cuts off at the actor's thighs so you can't see if he's still wearing those sweet black sneakers, you can't say that Cusack doesn't look pretty damn cool in the get up. Based on a script by Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare, the plot is about a serial killer who is basing his crimes on those in Poe's stories. The movie isn't set to be released until March 9, 2012, but it will be featured in a Hall H panel at this year's San Diego Comic Con, so don't be too surprised if footage finds its way online sooner than later.

Ron Howard to Direct SPY VS. SPY

by Jason Barr   Posted: June 22nd, 2011

We have another installment in our ongoing series “things Ron Howard may or may not be directing in the near future.” Yesterday, we brought you a pair of items in which he displayed optimism for his Dark Tower adaptation before diving into early talks to helm the Formula 1 racing biopic Rush. Now, the Oscar-winning filmmaker has his name attached to a Spy vs. Spy film adaptation over at Warner Bros. John Kamps (Ghost Town) will pen the script which is described by Deadline as a “highly visual action comedy.” Howard will also produce the pic alongside David Koepp and his Imagine Entertainment cohort Brian Grazer.
Those concerned about what Spy vs. Spy could mean for Howard’s ambitious Dark Tower take needn’t worry as the project is believed to be a “down the line” pic for the director. In case you’ve forgotten about the perpetually feuding rivals that make up Spy vs. Spy, you should know that the Antonio Prohias-created property first appeared in 1961 as part of Mad Magazine #60. While I don’t have any memories of Spy in magazine format, I’ll always have a special place in my gaming heart for its NES game. If Howard’s eventual take ends up being half as satisfying as that relic of my youth, then I will consider the whole thing a success. http://collider.com/ron-howard-spy-vs-spy/98134/

James Wan in Talks to Direct Supernatural Thriller THE CONJURING

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 22nd, 2011

Director James Wan has a knack for low-budget horror films. He helmed the first Saw movie, which was so profitable it spurned 67 sequels, and he directed this year’s low-budget hit Insidious. Now Variety reports that Wan is in talks to direct the low-budget thriller The Conjuring. The pitch was inspired by the supernatural events that happened in the home of the Perron family in Rhode Island. Andrea Perron has written a volume recounting her family’s incredibly creepy supernatural interactions in a book called House of Darkness House of Light: The True Story.
No production start date has been set for The Courting, but Wan is also attached to direct a supernatural thriller called Spectre with Nicole Kidman in talks to star. Hit the jump to read a super spooky synopsis of House of Darkness House of Light: The True Story.  http://collider.com/james-wan-the-conjuring/98096/

Casting Call: Ray Winstone is a Dwarf in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, Joel David Moore Joins SAVAGES, Katie Cassidy in Talks for FREAKY DEAKY

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 22nd, 2011

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this afternoon. First up, Ray Winstone has been cast as the seventh and final dwarf in Snow White and the Huntsman. Heat Vision reports that Winstone joins previously announces dwarfs Ian McShane, Eddie Izzard, Bob Hoskins, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan and Steven Graham. Winstone will play Trajan. Directed by Rupert Sanders, the film centers on princess Snow White (Kristen Stewart) attempting to escape the grasp of her evil stepmother (Charlize Theron) with the help of a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) who trains her to survive. Snow White and the Huntsman hits theaters June 1st, 2012.
Additionally, Joel David Moore has joined the burgeoning cast of Oliver Stone’s Savages. Based on the book by Don Winslow, the film stars Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, Emile Hirsch, John Travolta and Uma Thurman. The story centers on two Laguna Beach marijuana kingpins (Kitsch and Johnson) who encounter a world of trouble when their shared girlfriend (Lively) is kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel. Risky Business reports that Moore will play a computer geek who moves from a think tank in Washington to the marijuana business. Savages hits theaters on September 28th, 2012. Hit the jump for the casting news of Katie Cassidy in Freaky Deaky. http://collider.com/ray-winstone-snow-white-and-the-huntsman-joel-david-moore-savages/98073/

Ed Helms and Isla Fisher Join WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING [UPDATED]

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: June 22nd, 2011

Two more have joined the cast of What to Expect When You’re Expecting (yes, this is a movie). Following yesterday’s announcement that Jennifer Lopez was in talks to star, Vulture reports that Ed Helms and Isla Fisher are on board as well. The film follows six different couples, Love Actually-style, in the months and weeks leading up to baby-time.
Directed by Kirk Jones (Nanny McPhee), the film also stars Cameron Diaz, with Matthew Morrison (Glee) circling a role, though his schedule may be too tight to join the cast. Fisher is taking on a part that was originally offered to Kristen Wiig, but the shooting schedule conflicted with her SNL commitments. Helms will be playing one of the expectant fathers. What to Expect When You’re Expecting hits theaters May 11th, 2012 (please note that I did not use a “due date” joke here. I’ll be accepting medals and accolades at a later date.)
[Update: The Playlist now reports that they've spoken to Ed Helms' reps and he is NOT in the movie after all.]

James Wan to Direct "The Conjuring" Haunted House Film

Posted: June 23rd, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

James Wan, the director of the original "Saw" movie and "Insidious," is in final negotiations to direct "The Conjuring" horror film for New Line Cinema.

Carey and Chad Hayes (Whiteout, House of Wax) wrote the pitch that was inspired by the supernatural events that happened in the Rhode Island home of the Perron family.

In addition to picking up the pitch, the studio also acquired the life rights to the Perron family, and Ed and Lorraine Warren, experts in paranormal activities who investigated and battled the activities occurring in the Perron household.

A production start date has yet to be set.

Eddie Izzard, Bob Hoskins, and Toby Jones Joining Ian McShane as Dwarfs in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 21st, 2011

Last night, we reported that Ian McShane had been cast as the leader of the dwarfs in Universal’s Snow White project, Snow White and the Huntsman. Tonight, it looks as if the actor is getting some company as Heat Vision reports that Eddie Izzard (Valkyrie), Bob Hoskins (Who Framed Roger Rabbit?), and Toby Jones (Captain America: The First Avenger) are in final negotiations to join McShane’s gang of dwarfs. Per the report, Izzard will play the burliest dwarf Tiberius, Hoskins will a blind dwarf named Constantine, and Jones will make a turn as the timid dwarf Claudius. The trio will join a cast that already includes Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, and Kristen Stewart.
In addition to Izzard, Hoskins, and Jones, the report also mentions that Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes) and Steven Graham are currently in talks to play warriors in the pic. Directed by Rupert Sanders, Snow White and the Huntsman features princess Snow White (Stewart) attempting to escape the grasp of her evil stepmother (Theron) with the help of a huntsman (Hemsworth) who trains her to survive. Evan Spiliotopoulos is currently touching up a script by Evan Daugherty. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on June 1st, 2012. http://collider.com/eddie-izzard-bob-hoskins-snow-white-and-the-huntsman/97924/

Ron Howard in Talks to Direct Formula 1 Racing Biopic RUSH

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 21st, 2011

Earlier today Ron Howard seemed pretty optimistic that his Dark Tower adaptation would be coming in at budget and perhaps moving forward in the near future. The director is now throwing all of that optimism into question as Variety reports that he is in early talks to direct the Formula 1 biopic Rush. Written by Frost/Nixon scribe Peter Morgan, Rush focuses on three-time F1 champion Niki Lauda who returned from a fiery crash in 1976 just in time to continue his rivalry with fellow driver James Hunt. Paul Greengrass was interested in heading Rush before taking the helm of Sony’s A Captain’s Duty adaptation.
As for what this means for Howard’s Dark Tower, it’s important to note that the director is still attached to Dark Tower and that his Rush talks are in the very early stages. Given that Dark Tower is a massive undertaking and is moving along slowly/cautiously as a result, it makes sense from a professional standpoint that Howard would dip his toe in other projects while waiting for the go-ahead from Universal. If anything, news of his interest in Rush reaffirms what we already knew: that the Dark Tower series adaptation still has a lot of work to do. That said, if Howard ends up taking on Rush, it should act as evidence that Tower is further away than his recent sentiments may have suggested. http://collider.com/ron-howard-rush/97919/

Douglas Booth Cast as Romeo Opposite Hailee Steinfeld in ROMEO AND JULIET

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 21st, 2011

It appears that director Carlo Carlei has finally found his Romeo. British actor Douglas Booth (LOL) has been cast in the lead opposite Hailee Steinfeld who will play Juliet in Carlei’s adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Variety reports that 19-year-old Booth beat out 300 other actors who were vying for the part. Ed Westwick is set to play Tybalt, with 14-year-old Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In) on board as Benvolio. Apparently babies were considered too chubby to take on the roles in this extremely young cast.
Italian director Carlei (Flight of the Innocent) will helm from a script by Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park), who is also producing the film. Shooting is set to begin this summer in Italy. In addition to the aforementioned actors, Holly Hunter is set to play Nurse. The role of Mercutio has yet to be cast. http://collider.com/douglas-booth-romeo-and-juliet/97880/

Ian McShane Cast as the Leader of the Dwarfs in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: June 20th, 2011

Ian McShane has signed on to play Caesar, the leader of the dwarfs in Snow White and the Huntsman.  (That’s easily the coolest sentence I’ve written in months.)  For those keeping track, this is Universal’s Snow White project, the one that stars Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, and Chris Hemsworth.  The Relativity Snow White project — which has no title and stars other people — just entered into principal photography to be in theaters by March 16, 2012.  According to Heat Vision, director Rupert Sanders will shoot Snow White and the Huntsman in August, content to open a couple months later on June 1, 2012.  Heat Vision provides this logline:
[Snow White and the Huntsman] is a revisionist take on the fairy tale and features Snow White (Stewart) as a princess who escapes her evil stepmother (Theron) with the help of a huntsman (Hemsworth) who was to have killed her but now trains the princess to survive and fight back.

Let it be decreed that any Snow White movie that casts Ian McShane (as a dwarf no less!) has the advantage, no matter the release date.

Penn Badgley Making Turn as Jeff Buckley in GREETINGS FROM TIM BUCKLEY

by Jason Barr   Posted: June 20th, 2011

Penn Badgley (Easy A and Gossip Girl) has signed on to play the late Jeff Buckley in co-writer/director Dan Algrant’s (Naked in New York and People I Know) upcoming drama Greetings from Tim Buckley. Per the press release from Smuggler Films, the film will center on the days leading up to Buckley’s 1991 performance at his father’s (the late Tim Buckley) tribute concert and will feature a romance with a young woman who helps him better understand his father who died at the age of 28. In discussing the role, Badgley showed reverence for the opportunity to play the legendary singer-songwriter, saying:
“To play a man who was singularly gifted as an artist, greatly misunderstood & mythologized as a human being… It’s something very special and sacred. I’m going to give all I can to this project.”
Greetings from Tim Buckley is slated to begin production in New York City this August. For more on the project, hit the jump for the full press release. http://collider.com/penn-badgley-greetings-from-tim-buckley/97713/

New Trailer for Pedro Almodovar’s THE SKIN I LIVE IN

by Phil Brown    Posted: June 20th, 2011

Pedro Almodovar can usually be counted on for odd movies that feel outside of the box, but his latest film The Skin I Live In looks like it could reach previously unattained weirdo heights for the director. The film premiered at Cannes last month and is already set for a fall release stateside, so pre-release footage of the surreal Antonio Banderas-starred plastic surgery thriller has been gradually finding its way to the internet over the last few weeks.
Today a new trailer has been released that promises even more vibrant cinematography and body-stocking clad fight scenes than ever before. Even viewed in this electric guitar-backed 60-second clip, The Skin I Live In doesn’t look like anything the director has attempted before or like any other movie coming out in the next few months. Hit the jump to this new trailer in all its kinky glory. http://collider.com/the-skin-i-live-in-movie-trailer/97612/

Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake Interview BAD TEACHER

by Christina Radish    Posted: June 20th, 2011

In the raunchy comedy Bad Teacher, Elizabeth Halsey (Cameron Diaz) is a teacher who just doesn’t care about anyone but herself. She’s foul-mouthed, ruthless and wildly inappropriate, in her pursuit of the fake boobs that she’s convinced will make her more enticing in winning over a rich, handsome man. Waiting for her meal ticket to take her away from her day job teaching middle school, she sets a plan in motion to win over Scott Delacorte (Justin Timberlake), who unfortunately starts to fall for Elizabeth’s colleague Amy Squirrel (Lucy Punch), setting her jealousy off into overdrive. Meanwhile, gym teacher Russell Gettis (Jason Segel) expresses interest in Elizabeth, even though he won’t take any of her bullshit. Completely the wrong person to help guide students, Elizabeth’s schemes get more and more outrageous, shocking everyone around her.
During a press conference to promote the film’s release, co-stars Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake, who has proven himself to be a very talented comic actor, talked about centering a film around a character who is horribly ruthless and yet still somehow likeable, their own experiences in public school, filming the hilarious dry-humping scene, and the importance of chemistry in a comedy ensemble. First Trailer for FLYPAPER Starring Patrick Dempsey, Ashley Judd and Tim Blake Nelson

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: June 20th, 2011

flypaper-movie-image-patrick-dempsey-slice-01
The first trailer for the heist comedy Flypaper has been released. Directed by Rob Minkoff, the film centers on two different groups of robbers who attempt to hold up a bank at the same time. While Tim Blake Nelson is spot on, the trailer seems a bit lacking, trying too hard to be Clue but coming up short. And the Patrick Dempsey/Ashley Judd romance doesn’t seem to work at all. Matt saw the film at Sundance and while he thought the film ultimately didn’t work as well as it tried, it was still good for a few laughs.
In addition to Dempsey, Judd and Nelson, the film also stars Mekhi Phifer, Jeffrey Tambor, John Ventimiglia, and Matt Ryan. Hit the jump to check out the trailer. http://collider.com/flypaper-movie-trailer/97584/

Chris Hemsworth Confirmed as the Huntsman in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: May 14th, 2011 at 9:26 am

In the weeks prior to the May 6 release of Thor, Chris Hemsworth became the lead contender to play the huntsman in Snow White and the Huntsman. Encouraged by his earning power (nearly $300 million worldwide for Thor in two weeks), Deadline reports Universal has officially signed Hemsworth for the role. Kristen Stewart is on board as Snow White. Charlize Theron will play the evil queen, and Sam Claflin is set as the prince. Rupert Sanders will direct Snow White and the Huntsman from a script by Evan Daugherty. This Snow White is scheduled for release on December 21, 2012, notably six months after the release of competing fairy tale The Brothers Grimm: Snow White.

Hemsworth has had two films in the can for awhile that should see release in the coming year. The Cabin in the Woods is scheduled for October 28; the Red Dawn remake doesn’t have a date yet. Hemsworth is currently filming The Avengers.

Ryan Gosling to Star in and Direct Remake of THE IDOLMAKER
by Adam Chitwood Posted: May 13th, 2011 at 4:34 pm

Ryan Gosling is now set to star in and make his directorial debut on a remake of the 1980 musical drama The Idolmaker. Deadline reports that the actor will helm the project for MGM, but no other details are known at this time. The original film, directed by Taylor Hackford and starring Ray Sharkey, is based on the life of concert promoter and manager Bob Marcucci and tells the story of a similar songwriter/manager searching for “the next big thing.”

This is definitely not what many expected from Gosling’s first outing as director, but the actor’s no stranger to the music scene. His band, Dead Man’s Bones, released their first album in 2009. Gosling currently has a slate of fantastic projects lined up: Drive with Carey Mulligan is playing in-competition at Cannes, the comedy Crazy Stupid Love is slated for release this summer, and he’s currently filming George Clooney’s political drama The Ides of March.

Sam Claflin to Play Prince in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 4th, 2011

Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman can’t seem to find a huntsman, but they’ve now landed on a prince.  Deadline reports that rising star Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) will play the prince in the re-imagining of the fairy tale which stars Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen.  The story centers on Snow White escaping from the Evil Queen and learning to fend for herself from the Huntsman.  On Monday, we reported that Chris Hemsworth (Thor) was the frontrunner to play the huntsman but casting leads on that role seem to change from day to day.  If Hemsworth were cast, it would probably change the Snow White-Huntsman relationship from protege-mentor to a love story.
Claflin will star alongside Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore in The Seventh Son before moving on to shoot Huntsman in the fall.  Snow White and the Huntsman is set to open on December 21, 2012.

First Clip from Terrence Malick’s THE TREE OF LIFE

by Phil Brown   Posted: May 4th, 2011

Art house fans can officially prepare to swoon because the first clip from Terrence Malick’s highly anticipated and endlessly delayed The Tree Of Life has hit the internettoday. The film is set to premiere at this years Cannes Film Festival and open in the US a few short weeks later, but other than that precious little is known.
It’s a project that Malick has been nursing since the 70s and editing for almost two years now. All that’s been revealed about the plot is that the film will star Sean Penn as a man struggling to come to terms with the meaning of life and the complicated relationship he had with his father during a time of lost innocence he experienced in the 50s. Oh yeah, all this will supposedly be intertwined with scenes depicting the formation of the earth and the universe (including dinosaurs) that Malick has spent years designing with special effects guru Douglas Trumbull (2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner). The film stars Penn, Brad Pitt, and Jessica Chastain and will be released on May 27th. Hit the jump to see the clip.

Bradley Cooper in Talks to Play Lucifer in PARADISE LOST

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: May 4th, 2011

Bradley Cooper’s upcoming slate is looking quite full. The actor just recently entered negotiations to star in The Crow remake, and now he’s in talks to star as Lucifer in director Alex Proyas’ (Knowing) adaptation of Paradise Lost. The film has been in development for quite some time, with Proyas signing on last September. The 17th-century epic poem is about the Satan’s temptation of Adam and Eve and the pair’s eventual expulsion from the Garden of Eden, with an epic war between archangels Lucifer and Michael taking place in heaven.
Variety reports that Proyas’ adaptation “will be crafted as an action vehicle that will include aerial warfare, possibly shot in 3D,” which is exactly what John Milton had in mind when writing the epic poem. While no official offer has been made, Cooper is apparently “eager” to take the role. Funnily enough, Proyas directed the original 1994 version of The Crow, so maybe they’ve bonded over their mutual admiration for eye makeup? The script for Paradise Lost has been tackled by no less than five writers, with Ryan Condal turning in the latest draft. Hit the jump for a synopsis of Milton’s poem. .... http://collider.com/bradley-cooper-paradise-lost/89002/

Casting Call: Evans and Thomas Join Refn’s ONLY GOD FORGIVES; Hammer to Lead 2:22; Grillo Signs on to LAY THE FAVORITE

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: May 2nd, 2011

We have a few pieces of casting news to report this afternoon.  First up, Luke Evans and Kristin Scott Thomas have joined Nicolas Winding Refn’s independent drama Only God Forgives.  There’s no word yet on which roles the Evans or Thomas will play, but according to Cineuropa [via The Playlist], the plot centers “on a Thai police lieutenant whose rivalry with a gangster sees the two settling their differences in a Thai boxing match.”  International rights to the film will be sold later this month at Cannes.
Refn recently directed the Ryan Gosling thriller Drive—which will premiere at Cannes and open in the U.S. on September 16th—and he plans to shoot Only God Forgives before moving on to direct a remake of Logan’s Run which will also star Gosling.  Presumably, shooting on Only God Forgives would take place this summer and then Refn and Gosling would shoot Logan’s Run in the late fall or early winter in order to accommodate Gosling’s shooting schedule on Gangster Squad.  Hit the jump for casting news regarding Armie Hammer and Frank Grillo.

Chris Hemsworth May Join SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: May 2nd, 2011

Chris Hemsworth (Thor) is about to become a movie star.  I caught Thor this past weekend and his performance is a major reason why the film works so well.  People are going to leave the theater talking about him and the job offers are about to come flooding in.  Additionally, the film has already been released overseas and is doing well at the international box office.  With all that in mind, Deadline is reporting that Hemsworth has become the frontrunner to play the huntsman in Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman.
The project has had some difficulty casting its lead actor after talks fell apart with Viggo Mortensen.  Universal reportedly was considering Hugh Jackman for the part, but he passed and last week we learned that rising star Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom) was under consideration.  Now we’ll wait to see if Hemsworth decides to join Kristen Stewart (who’s playing Snow White) and Charlize Theron (the Evil Queen).  The film is currently set for December 21, 2012.

Emily Mortimer Takes Lead Female Role in Aaron Sorkin’s New HBO Drama

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: May 2nd, 2011

Last week we learned that Marisa Tomei was close to taking the lead female role in a new series pilot for HBO from writer Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network) and director Greg Mottola (Paul). However, it looks like another serious contender for the role has been locked into the pilot as Deadline reports Emily Mortimer (Shutter Island, Cars 2) has snagged the lead female role instead. Tentatively titled More as This Story Develops, the new series follows cable news anchor Will McCallister (Jeff Daniels), who has his own show, as well as the show’s female executive producer and staff. Mortimer is playing the executive producer, MacKenzie, for whom producing the news is what she does best and everything else is just noise. I’m thoroughly looking forward to seeing how this project turns out and can’t wait to see who else joins the cast.

Trailer for THE LEDGE Starring Liv Tyler and Patrick Wilson

by Jason Barr    Posted: May 2nd, 2011

The theatrical trailer for writer/director Matthew Chapman’s The Ledge has landed online. Starring Liv Tyler, Patrick Wilson, Charlie Hunnam, and Terrence Howard, the thriller screened at Sundance earlier this year and takes place as a man (Hunnam) threatens to jump from the ledge of a building. As the story goes, it becomes clear that the threat stems from a romantic and ideological dispute between Hunnam and Wilson’s characters.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer for yourself. For my part, I think the cut gives away a little too much regarding Hunnam’s purpose on the ledge. Nevertheless, the film looks to have plenty of drama and Wilson seems to be in a similarly crazy role to his turn in 2005’s Hard Candy (which I see as a plus). The Ledge is scheduled to hit theaters stateside on June 29th.

Joel Edgerton May Star in THE BOURNE LEGACY or SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: April 21st, 2011

Rising star Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom) may be close to landing a major role in a high-profile project.  Vulture is reporting that The Bourne Legacy writer-director Tony Gilroy wants Edgerton as the new Bourne, but that Universal wants the actor for the male lead in Snow White and the Huntsman.  The major issue regarding Edgerton and Bourne is that Universal doesn’t feel he has enough name recognition to carry the franchise, and the studio prefers either James McAvoy or Shia LaBeouf for the role.  However, Universal also believes that Edgerton would be a good fit for Huntsman since co-stars Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron would make up for Edgerton’s current lack of star power.  If I had to guess which film will get Edgerton, I’d bet on Snow White since I don’t think Universal is going to chance the Bourne franchise on a lead who’s mostly unknown to audiences outside his native Australia.
Edgerton will next be seen in the sports drama Warrior opposite Tom Hardy and the horror prequel The Thing with Mary Elizabeth Winstead.  I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen of the actor so far and I’m glad that he’s being considered for leading roles in tentpole movies.  The Bourne Legacy is currently set for August 3, 2012 while Snow White and the Huntsman is slated for December 21, 2012.

4 New Television Spots for THE HANGOVER PART II

Warner Bros. has released four new television spots for The Hangover Part II. Although they don’t feature a ton of new footage from the film, it should be enough to whet the appetite of fans. Don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to checking out the film in theaters, I’m just still worried by the amount of self-referential material crammed into both these spots and the trailer. Honestly, Warner Bros. could save moviegoers a ton of time if they would just use the tagline “For Fans of The Hangover.”

Jessica Stroup Takes on Seth MacFarlane’s TED

by Jason Barr   Posted: April 21st, 2011

Casting for Seth MacFarlane’s comedy Ted continues to take shape as Jessica Stroup (Beverly Hills 90210) has signed on to the project. Per THR, Stroup will make a turn as Mila Kunis’ office co-worker, “a woman who has slept with their boss” played by Community’s Joel McHale. Aside from her apparent promiscuity, further details regarding Stroup’s character are absent. In addition to Stroup, McHale, and Kunis, Ted also stars Mark Wahlberg, Giovanni Ribisi, and Patrick Warburton.
For those unaware, Ted (co-written and directed by MacFarlane) tells the story of a grown man (Wahlberg) whose wish that his childhood teddy bear would come to life comes true. As the story goes, the bear (played by MacFarlane using motion-capture) is a full-on hot mess, complete with swearing and toking, and eventually wrecks said man’s life. Ted marks MacFarlane’s feature film debut and is set to hit theaters on July 13th, 2012.

Jeremy Renner Set to Topline THE BOURNE LEGACY

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 21st, 2011

Well, it looks like the search is finally over. Universal Pictures has officially offered Jeremy Renner the lead role in Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Legacy. Deadline confirms what Latino Review reported earlier this month: that Renner will be taking over the franchise that kicked Matt Damon’s career into high-gear. Written and directed by Gilrory, the film will apparently take place in the same universe as Paul Greengrass and Doug Liman’s previous films, but won’t feature Damon’s Jason Bourne character (a fact that doesn’t seem to hinder Universal from strapping the Bourne name on the film). Legacy will further explore the Treadstone and Blackbriar mythos that permeated throughout the previous films, possibly exploring other similar agents and groups.
Universal cast a very wide net in searching for their Legacy star, with basically every fairly well-known male actor between the ages of 18-40 meeting for the role (names included Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch, Josh Hartnett, etc.). Hit the jump for more. ........... http://collider.com/jeremy-renner-the-bourne-legacy-2/87175/

Not Casting Call: Amy Adams Passes on ROCK OF AGES; Hugh Jackman Won’t Star in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN
by Matt Goldberg Posted: April 13th, 2011
Today in not-casting news, we have updates to a couple of our previous stories. First up, Deadline is reporting that while Russell Brand is confirmed for Rock of Ages, Amy Adams has passed on the role of a journalist who sleeps with rock star Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise). Like Anne Hathaway before her, Adams had a scheduling conflict due to a leading role in a superhero movie. In this case, Adams will be busy playing Lois Lane in Man of Steel. Rock of Ages is currently set to open on June 1, 2012.

In a related non-casting story, The Wrap reports that Hugh Jackman won’t play the Huntsman in Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman. The project continues to look for a male lead after Viggo Mortensen passed on the movie last month. Kristen Stewart is in talks to play Snow White who is taught how to survive by the Huntsman. Charlize Theron is confirmed to play the evil queen. Snow White and the Huntsman is slated to be released on December 21, 2012.
