Eddie Izzard, Bob Hoskins, and Toby Jones Joining Ian McShane as Dwarfs in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 21st, 2011

Last night, we reported that Ian McShane had been cast as the leader of the dwarfs in Universal’s Snow White project, Snow White and the Huntsman. Tonight, it looks as if the actor is getting some company as Heat Vision reports that Eddie Izzard (Valkyrie), Bob Hoskins (Who Framed Roger Rabbit?), and Toby Jones (Captain America: The First Avenger) are in final negotiations to join McShane’s gang of dwarfs. Per the report, Izzard will play the burliest dwarf Tiberius, Hoskins will a blind dwarf named Constantine, and Jones will make a turn as the timid dwarf Claudius. The trio will join a cast that already includes Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, and Kristen Stewart.
In addition to Izzard, Hoskins, and Jones, the report also mentions that Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes) and Steven Graham are currently in talks to play warriors in the pic. Directed by Rupert Sanders, Snow White and the Huntsman features princess Snow White (Stewart) attempting to escape the grasp of her evil stepmother (Theron) with the help of a huntsman (Hemsworth) who trains her to survive. Evan Spiliotopoulos is currently touching up a script by Evan Daugherty. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on June 1st, 2012. http://collider.com/eddie-izzard-bob-hoskins-snow-white-and-the-huntsman/97924/

Ron Howard in Talks to Direct Formula 1 Racing Biopic RUSH

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 21st, 2011

Earlier today Ron Howard seemed pretty optimistic that his Dark Tower adaptation would be coming in at budget and perhaps moving forward in the near future. The director is now throwing all of that optimism into question as Variety reports that he is in early talks to direct the Formula 1 biopic Rush. Written by Frost/Nixon scribe Peter Morgan, Rush focuses on three-time F1 champion Niki Lauda who returned from a fiery crash in 1976 just in time to continue his rivalry with fellow driver James Hunt. Paul Greengrass was interested in heading Rush before taking the helm of Sony’s A Captain’s Duty adaptation.
As for what this means for Howard’s Dark Tower, it’s important to note that the director is still attached to Dark Tower and that his Rush talks are in the very early stages. Given that Dark Tower is a massive undertaking and is moving along slowly/cautiously as a result, it makes sense from a professional standpoint that Howard would dip his toe in other projects while waiting for the go-ahead from Universal. If anything, news of his interest in Rush reaffirms what we already knew: that the Dark Tower series adaptation still has a lot of work to do. That said, if Howard ends up taking on Rush, it should act as evidence that Tower is further away than his recent sentiments may have suggested. http://collider.com/ron-howard-rush/97919/

A new international poster for director Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens has landed online and it suggests that UFOs run super quietly. The UK one sheet features stars Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, and Olivia Wilde staring off at an unspecified diversion while an alien craft hovers overhead. In addition to Craig, Ford, and Wilde, Cowboys & Aliens also stars Sam Rockwell, Paul Dano, Keith Carradine, and Walton Goggins. Check out the new poster after the jump. Douglas Booth Cast as Romeo Opposite Hailee Steinfeld in ROMEO AND JULIET

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 21st, 2011

It appears that director Carlo Carlei has finally found his Romeo. British actor Douglas Booth (LOL) has been cast in the lead opposite Hailee Steinfeld who will play Juliet in Carlei’s adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Variety reports that 19-year-old Booth beat out 300 other actors who were vying for the part. Ed Westwick is set to play Tybalt, with 14-year-old Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In) on board as Benvolio. Apparently babies were considered too chubby to take on the roles in this extremely young cast.
Italian director Carlei (Flight of the Innocent) will helm from a script by Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park), who is also producing the film. Shooting is set to begin this summer in Italy. In addition to the aforementioned actors, Holly Hunter is set to play Nurse. The role of Mercutio has yet to be cast. http://collider.com/douglas-booth-romeo-and-juliet/97880/

Tom Hanks was guest on Jimmy Kimmel’s post-Oscar show last night and he brought along the first clip from his new film Larry Crowne.  The story centers on a laid-off middle-aged man (Hanks) who goes back to college and strikes up a relationship with one of his professors (Julia Roberts).  Larry Crowne is the first film Hanks has directed since 1996’s That Thing You Do, and he co-wrote the script with Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding).  The clip looks charming and he almost always succeeds when it comes to light-hearted fare.
Hanks also did a fun spoof of the TLC’s horrific Toddlers & Tiaras, a show which attempts to capture the elusive pedophile/abusive parent demographic.  Hit the jump to check out the clip from Larry Crowne and Hanks’ Toddlers & Tiaras spoof.  Larry Crowne opens July 1st.

First Look at Sentinel Prime from TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON; Plus New Details on the Story

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 28th, 2011

The latest issue of Empire puts new Transformers: Dark of the Moon Autobot Sentinel Prime on the cover alongside Optimus Prime.  If you weren’t a fan of robot beards from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, that’s too bad.  Sentinal Prime not only has facial hair, he has braided facial hair.  It shows that not only will he whoop some Decepticon ass, but he’ll go listen to your jam band afterwards.
Hit the jump to check out Sentinal Prime along with some other minor spoilers on the upcoming sequel.  Transformers: Dark of the Moon stars Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Josh Duhamel, John Malkovich, Tyrese Gibson, Frances McDormand, and Ken Jeong.  The film opens in 3D on July 1st.

Universal to Distribute TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY Starring Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, and Mark Strong

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 28th, 2011

Universal Pictures has picked up the domestic distribution rights to Tomas Alfredson’s adaptation of John Le Carre’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.  The Cold War thriller centers on semi-retired agent George Smiley (Gary Oldman) who is pulled out of semi-retirement to ferret out a Soviet mole within MI6.  The film has an impressive cast that also includes Oscar-winner Colin Firth (great to write that), Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, John Hurt and Toby Jones.
According to Deadline, the film (which is Alfredson’s follow-up to Let the Right One In) was a hot project at the Berlin Film Festival, but Universal chose to exercise its first-look option and snatch the project away from a bidding war between The Weinstein Company and Summit Entertainment.  Oldman reportedly gives a “tour de force” performance in the film, which is currently in post-production.  Universal is said to be eyeing a November/December release for the film, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it plays at the Toronto International Film Festival.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of Le Carre’s novel.
