Chris Hemsworth Confirmed as the Huntsman in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

In the weeks prior to the May 6 release of Thor, Chris Hemsworth became the lead contender to play the huntsman in Snow White and the Huntsman. Encouraged by his earning power (nearly $300 million worldwide for Thor in two weeks), Deadline reports Universal has officially signed Hemsworth for the role. Kristen Stewart is on board as Snow White. Charlize Theron will play the evil queen, and Sam Claflin is set as the prince. Rupert Sanders will direct Snow White and the Huntsman from a script by Evan Daugherty. This Snow White is scheduled for release on December 21, 2012, notably six months after the release of competing fairy tale The Brothers Grimm: Snow White.
Hemsworth has had two films in the can for awhile that should see release in the coming year. The Cabin in the Woods is scheduled for October 28; the Red Dawn remake doesn’t have a date yet. Hemsworth is currently filming The Avengers.

Ryan Gosling to Star in and Direct Remake of THE IDOLMAKER

Ryan Gosling is now set to star in and make his directorial debut on a remake of the 1980 musical drama The Idolmaker. Deadline reports that the actor will helm the project for MGM, but no other details are known at this time. The original film, directed by Taylor Hackford and starring Ray Sharkey, is based on the life of concert promoter and manager Bob Marcucci and tells the story of a similar songwriter/manager searching for “the next big thing.”
This is definitely not what many expected from Gosling’s first outing as director, but the actor’s no stranger to the music scene. His band, Dead Man’s Bones, released their first album in 2009. Gosling currently has a slate of fantastic projects lined up: Drive with Carey Mulligan is playing in-competition at Cannes, the comedy Crazy Stupid Love is slated for release this summer, and he’s currently filming George Clooney’s political drama The Ides of March.

Casting Call: Robert De Niro Up for THE WIZARD OF LIES, Clive Owen and Uma Thurman in BLIND, Jeremy Renner for YOU’RE NOT YOU and Sarah Ramos Joins PREDISPOSED

We’ve got a few casting stories for you this evening. First up, Robert De Niro is in talks to play Bernie Madoff in HBO’s adaptation of Diane Henriques’ New York Times bestseller The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust. Deadline reports that the cable channel optioned the rights to the book that recounts Madoff’s $65 million Ponzi scheme and is now looking at De Niro to take on the lead role.

Additionally, Clive Owen and Uma Thurman are in talks to star in the drama Blind. The film tells the story of a novelist who is blinded in a car crash that kills his wife, only to be reinvigorated years later while he begins an affair with an indicted businessman’s neglected wife. Screen Daily reports that producer Mark Damon is currently shopping the film at Cannes. Malin Akerman in Negotiations to Star in MEDALLION with Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage is starring in yet another action film, and it looks like Malin Akerman will be along for the ride. Akerman is in negotiations to take on the female lead in Medallion, from director Simon West (When a Stranger Calls). The Taken-esque story centers on “a former master thief (Cage), who has only a few hours to find his daughter when she is kidnapped and locked in the trunk of a New York medallion taxi cab.”Heat Vision reports that Akerman will star as Cage’s former girlfriend/bankrobber who, of course, teams up with Cage to help him find his daughter. David Guggenheim (Safe House) wrote the script, while McG is producing, sigh. West and Cage previously teamed up for the fantastically ridiculous Con Air, and one can only hope that working together on this project will get the ball rolling on that Con Air sequel that West wants to do. Akerman recently replaced Lindsay Lohan in the Linda Lovelace biopic Inferno.

New Images of Andrew Garfield on the Set of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Several new images of Andrew Garfield on the set of Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man have popped up online. The images feature the wall-crawler in what looks to be a stand-off situation as well as a half-suited Garfield apparently taking tips on how to point a gun at a grounded opponent. All right, so that is probably a little out of character for Spidey. In any case, you can hit the jump to check out the images.
In addition to Garfield, The Amazing Spider-Man also stars Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, and Denis Leary. The film hits 3D theaters on July 3, 2012.

Jesse Eisenberg, Melissa Leo, and Tracy Morgan Are PREDISPOSED

Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Oscar winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter), and 30 Rock star Tracy Morgan have reportedly signed on to star in the indie comedy Predisposed. According to Vulture, the trio will play a Julliard-hopeful, his drug-addicted mother, and said mother’s drug dealer, Sprinkles, respectively. Predisposed will be directed by Oscar nominated scribe/co-writer Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia) with Philip Dorling sharing co-writing credit as well. Briefly, the comedy will center on the dysfunctional relationship between Eisenberg and Leo’s mother and son pair. The story is set on a day in which the son is interviewing for Julliard while his mother is busy feuding with her drug-dealer/checking herself into rehab while intoxicated so as to overcome her lack of health insurance.
Leo should be well prepared for her role as Eisenberg’s junkie mom as she made the same turn when Predisposed screened at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival as a short directed by the aforementioned Philip Dorling. Shooting on this promising feature length version of Predisposed is set to begin this summer.
