Snow White And The Huntsman Will Be The First In A Trilogy
published: 2011-07-01 17:34:19 Author: Eric Eisenberg

A year ago I would have bet cold hard cash that one of the two Snow White projects in development - Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman and Relativity Media's untitled Snow White project - would eventually fade away. Sadly, that didn't happen. Both projects have writers, producers, directors, fully-stocked casts and, worst of all, release dates that that are only two-and-a-half months apart. But guess what? The Snow White love fest won't stop there.

Joe Roth, who kicked off the whole fairy tale fad by producing last year's worldwide smash hit Alice in Wonderland, has informed EW that Snow White and the Huntsman is the first film in a proposed trilogy that will see the three principal characters - played by Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, and Charlize Theron - return multiple times. But while the movie will be left open-ended in some respects, apparently it's also a contained story, Roth saying, "This story will end, but there will be questions remaining for these three characters." (the three in question being Snow White, the Huntsman, and the Evil Queen). While Relativity Media's version of the tale is already in production, Snow White and the Huntsman is scheduled to being lensing in August.

Roth also expanded on the role of the Huntsman, who is apparently a bounty hunter-like figure. In the story, Snow White has escaped after 11 years in captivity and the evil queen hires the Huntsman to find the missing girl and cut out her heart. The problem is that he doesn't have it in him to kill her and instead teaches her to survive in the woods and evade the Queen's armies. Said Roth of tte character, "He’s not a nice guy, but not only that he’s someone who has lost hope and lost faith. He has lost his wife, given up on everything." Directed by Rupert Sanders, the film also stars Sam Claflin, Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Eddie Izzard, Ray Winstone, Toby Jones, Stephen Graham, Eddie Marsan, Lily Cole, and Sam Spruell.

Rod Serling Biopic In The Works

published: 2011-07-01 13:41:57 Author: Eric Eisenberg
What's not to love about Rod Serling? The man is an absolute icon in the horror/science-fiction community thanks to his work on shows like The Twilight Zone, Night Gallery; he has one of the greatest voices in the history of narration; and the man's eyebrows are legendary. What you may not know, however, is that the man's story is quite incredible, and now he'll be getting a feature film made about him.

Bureau of Moving Pictures has made a deal to make a biopic about the life of Rod Serling, according to Deadline. Stanley Weiser, who is best known for co-writing Wall Street with Oliver Stone in 1987, will write the script while Andrew Meieran and Carol Serling, Rod's widow, will produce. Serling had quite an adventurous life before becoming a part of show business history, serving in the Pacific during World War II. Both a paratrooper and a member of a demolition squad, the horrors that the writer witnessed would later deeply affect the writer's work. In addition to his work on television, Serling also had experience in the movie industry, working with Michael Wilson on the first Planet of the Apes. A smoker his entire life, Serling died in 1975 at the age of 50.

This may seem kind of weird, but if they're looking for a proper director to handle the material, I think they should give some consideration to Tim Burton. My favorite movie from the filmmaker will always be Ed Wood, and while the tone would obviously differ greatly, I think Burton would has the darker sensibilities to do the project the right way. That said, I don't think Johnny Depp should play Rod Serling. I think it's Jon Hamm or go home.

Count of Monte Cristo Remake That's Heading To Warner Bros. Has A Twist

published: 2011-07-01 08:14:54 Author: Sean O'Connell
We are in an odd, swirling cycle of literary and historical remakes, with Hollywood ramping up productions of previously picked-over source materials to re-introduce legends like King Arthur and The Three Musketeers to fresh audiences. Up next in the déjà vu machine, according to reports, will be another of Alexandre Dumas’ adventure novels, albeit with a modern twist.

Warner Bros., which also rebooted Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes with great financial success, will mount a futuristic version of Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo, putting the project on a fast track and pitching it out to potential directors. Variet  says screenwriter Ian Shorr has conceived a idea that sets the classic tale of a man wrongfully imprisoned in a futuristic setting, yet one that we assume still taps into the themes of vengeance and repentance that are crucial to Dumas’ novel.

This isn’t Hollywood’s first dance with the Count -- far from it. As far back as 1934, there have been film and television adaptations of Dumas’ timeless work. The most recent, directed by Kevin Reynolds in 2002, was a straightforward interpretation that starred Jim Caviezel, Guy Pearce, future Superman Henry Cavill and Luis Guzman of all people. It made $75 million at the global box office.

While I’d much rather support projects built on a foundation of original ideas and plots, I understand Hollywood’s need to revisit properties with brand recognition. And if you are going to do another Monte Cristo, setting it in a completely different time frame at least gives it a shot of creative juice that could help it stand apart from its predecessors. So much of this film now relies on the casting, as well as who directs, so let’s reserve judgment for now, see what pieces fall into place, and revisit the Monte Cristo revisiting in time.

Directed by David Frankel, Meryl Streep and Steve Carell are poised to star in the film that centers on a longtime couple who decides to undergo intense marriage counseling. Jones will play Streep’s husband, while Carell is set to play a relationship guru. Mike Nichols was previously circling the project as his next directorial vehicle, but he subsequently dropped out.

The screenplay, written by Vanessa Taylor, landed on the Black List. Production on Great Hope Springs is set to start this August, with a 4th quarter 2012 release date being eyed. Based on the premise, a holiday release a la It’s Complicated seems likely. Hit the jump to read the full press release, as well as the official synopsis.

Renny Harlin on "The Long Kiss Goodnight" Sequel
Posted: May 20th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Back in 2007, Samuel L Jackson revealed that he has been talking to director Renny Harlin about developing a sequel to the 1996 thriller "The Long Kiss Goodnight."

He said that Geena Davis will not be returning. Instead, the film will concentrate on Samantha's daughter, Caitlin, who is all grown up and wants to find out who killed her mother. As a result she contacts Mitch (Jackson), as he is the only connection to her mom and might just know who to talk to.

DenOfGeek now caught up with Harlin, who said: "I'm right now looking for a writer who would have the same incredible sensibilities in terms of character, humor and action. Sam [Jackson] is 100% committed, he's 100% on board."

He added: "My plan is to focus on a story about Geena's daughter, who was six years old in the original and would now be about twenty-one. It's actually gonna be sort of a buddy story between Geena's daughter and Sam."
