Red-Band Trailer for THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Leaks
by Adam Chitwood Posted: May 28th, 2011 at 1:46 pm

The red-band trailer for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the David Fincher-directed adaptation of the popular book by Stieg Larsson, has leaked. The teaser is absolutely fantastic, with a version of “Immigrant Song” by Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Trent Reznor pulsing over cut-scenes from the film. Seriously, this teaser is phenomenal. The official version of the trailer is set to debut next week, so check this one out while it’s still up. Rooney Mara stars as Lisbeth Salander, the young heroine who investigates the Vanger family with journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig). Stellan SkarsgĂ„rd, Robin Wright, Christopher Plummer, and Joley Richardson also star. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens December 21. New Details on Terrence Malick’s Romantic Drama Starring Ben Affleck, and is He Shooting Another Film This Year?

Writer/director Terrence Malick’s latest film, The Tree of Life, just opened in limited release this weekend, marking only the fifth film released by the auteur in an almost 40-year career. To say Malick takes his time in choosing and editing projects is an understatement. But the director’s trademark lag between productions may now be a thing of the past. Last year, Malick shot his follow-up to Tree of Life, a romantic drama starring Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Javier Bardem, Rachel Weisz, Barry Pepper and Olga Kurylenko. While details on the plot are extremely hard to come by (typical of a Malick film), a bit more information has been unveiled about the drama.
Previously referred to as Burial, the untitled drama is a love story described as being even more experimental than Tree of Life, a film that has drawn some polarizing responses given its lack of narrative and expansive reach for greatness, despite winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Someone who has seen footage from Malick’s follow-up stated that the director’s trademark meditativeness “is there in spades.” Even more interesting, though, is the fact that Malick has alerted his production crew to keep the summer and fall open to possibly shoot another film this year. Hit the jump for more. http://collider.com/terrence-malick-untitled-movie-details/93485/

Photos from the Set of THE HUNGER GAMES; Amber Chaney Joins the Cast

We have seen a few photos from the North Carolina set of The Hunger Games, but they lacked a certain human element.  Today’s collection fixes that, with photos of Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Willow Shields, and even Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins in costume.  These characters are residents of the destitute District 12, so the costumes are drab.  But as the action travels to the lavish Capitol, the clothes become decidedly more flamboyant.
In other Hunger Games news, Lionsgate announced on Twitter that newcomer Amber Chaney is cast as “Avox girl,” a servant whose tongue was cut out for committing crimes against the Capitol.  This Avox is assigned to Katniss (Lawrence) as she prepares for the Hunger Games.  It’s a minor role (obviously non-speaking), but Katniss and the Avox share a special connection, so the character is not unimportant.
Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Elisabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Lenny Kravitz, and Wes Bentley also star in the adaptation directed by Gary Ross (Seabisciut).  The Hunger Games is scheduled for release on March 23, 2012.  Check out the set photos after the jump.

THE TREE OF LIFE Wins the Palme d’Or at the 2011 Cannes Festival
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: May 22nd, 2011 at 3:02 pm

The 2011 Cannes Film Festival award winners were announced today, and I’m excited about just how many are already set for American distribution. Despite mixed (yet still reverent) buzz for Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life took home the Palme d’Or (Cannes’ top honor) before it hits theaters on May 27. Likewise, Kirsten Dunst overcame the controversy Lars Von Trier inflicted on Melancholia to win Best Actress; Magnolia acquired the film in February. Nicolas Winding Refn won Best Director for Drive, scheduled for release on September 16 courtesy of FilmDistrict. Jean Dujardin won Best Actor for his role in The Artist — you wouldn’t expect a silent black-and-white French film to be a hot commodity, but The Weinstein Company picked up The Artist for release later this year. And Sundance Selects will bring us The Kid with a Bike, the latest from the Dardenne brothers, after it tied with Once Upon a Time in Anatolia for the Grand Prix (the runner-up prize to the Palme d’Or).

It sounds like a good year for Cannes, yielding a bountiful crop that we’ll all be able to experience soon enough. Hit the jump for the full list of winners.

 "Bridesmaids" Sequel Being Considered
Posted: May 22nd, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Now that the $33 million "Bridesmaids" has already grossed $44 million in just 8 days, NY Mag caught up with director Paul Feig and actress Melissa McCarthy to find out if a sequel is being planned.

"It depends how we do in the next couple weeks, but I know it's already been brought up," said Feig. "When you get a group that's this deep and this good, it's a crime to not use them again. You just want to make sure that you do it as well as you did the first one and try to make it better. So, we're up for the challenge."

McCarthy added: "I will show up wherever these guys tell me to go. I'm in."

Carrie Remake? Stephen King Asks, Why?

Author Stephen King reacts to the news of a Carrie remakeOne of the big news items yesterday was that MGM is moving forward on a remake of the 1976 horror classic Carrie, with playwright/screenwriter Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa coming aboard to write the script. Author Stephen King recently spoke out against the remake, mainly since he's so fond of the original movie, which was directed by Brian De Palma. Take a look at what he had to say below, including his intriguing casting suggestion of Lindsay Lohan to play the title character, and who he would like to see direct.

"I've heard rumblings about a Carrie remake, as I have about The Stand and IT. Who knows if it will happen? The real question is why, when the original was so good? I mean, not Casablanca, or anything, but a really good horror-suspense film, much better than the book. Piper Laurie really got her teeth into the bad-mom thing. Although Lindsay Lohan as Carrie White... hmmm. It would certainly be fun to cast. I guess I could get behind it if they turned the project over to one of the David's: Lynch or Cronenberg."

The Carrie remake is still in very early stages and, like Stephen King says, "who knows if it will happen?" However, our original report from yesterday indicated MGM and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa want to be more faithful to Stephen King's novel than the original movie, so perhaps the author might get behind this project after all. We'll just have to wait and see.

Carrie was released November 3rd, 1976 and stars Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, William Katt, Betty Buckley, Nancy Allen, John Travolta, P.J. Soles. The film is directed by Brian De Palma.

Jamie Campbell Bower, Ed Speleers and Leebo Freeman Up for Role of Jace in THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS
by Adam Chitwood Posted: May 16th, 2011 at 6:59 pm

Now that the cast of The Hunger Games is just about set, it’s time to move on to the next teen fantasy/adventure book series film adaptation: The Mortal Instruments. Lily Collins (Priest) is locked as the lead in the Scott Stewart-directed flick. The Wrap reports that Jamie Campbell Bower, Ed Speleers and Leebo Freeman all tested opposite Collins on the Sony lot last week.

Bower is somewhat of a veteran of teen books-turned-films, having appeared in both Twilight (as Caius) and Harry Potter (as Gellert Grindelwald). Speleers is best known for 2006’s Eragon and Freeman is a newcomer. The book series centers on 15-year-old Clary Fray who witnesses a murder only to discover that she has encountered the “Shadowhunters”, a secret tribe of warriors who are on a mission to destroy demons. Rachel McAdams Talks MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, SHERLOCK HOLMES 2, and Working for Terrence Malick
by Christina Radish Posted: May 16th, 2011 at 5:58 pm

It is quite clear that Woody Allen loves Paris, and even though her character in his latest film, Midnight in Paris, is quite the contrary, actress Rachel McAdams admits to loving Paris too. In this romantic comedy set in the City of Lights, Gil (Owen Wilson) is a successful Hollywood screenwriter who is following his dream of becoming a novelist, much like his idols Hemingway and Fitzgerald. When he and his fiancée Inez (Rachel McAdams) tag along on a trip to Paris with her father, his literary ambitions seems to annoy everyone and makes them question his focus. When Inez realizes that this is more than just a slight preoccupation for Gil, she begins to question whether or not they still have the same aspirations.

At the film’s press day, Rachel McAdams talked about working with Woody Allen and the type of director he is on set, how much she enjoyed working in and around Paris, working with the First Lady of France (Carla Bruni), and how the best acting advice she’s ever received is just to be as honest and present as you can be. She also talked about reprising her role as Irene Adler for a cameo in Sherlock Holmes 2, and working with director Terrence Malick on a still untitled film. Seth MacFarlane Rebooting THE FLINTSTONES
by Ethan Anderton Posted: May 16th, 2011 at 1:03 pm

Sure, he’s had cut away jokes in Family Guy referencing everyone’s favorite Stone Age family, but now Seth MacFarlane is giving his full attention to The Flintstones. Deadline reports the animation master is set to reboot the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon series as both a TV and film property. Apparently the project has been in the works for sometime now, but there was a lot of red tape to work through, not to mention the fact that the rightholders to the prehistoric cartoon were worried as to how MacFarlane’s bold and sometimes raunchy and controversial brand of humor would be applied to the series reboot. It’s still unclear just how this new cartoon series is going to work, and no broadcast date is set, but the project will be set up at Fox. Honestly, this seems like a risky move, but I’m wholly interested in seeing what a guy like MacFarlane can do with such an iconic property.

First Clip from J.J. Abrams’ SUPER 8
by Matt Goldberg Posted: May 16th, 2011 at 2:24 pm

The first clip from J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 has gone online. Footage-wise, there’s not much here that you haven’t seen in the trailer. What’s interesting about the clip is the pacing and the camera angles. The clip is paced so quickly that it almost feels abbreviated and of course, there’s plenty of lens flare for no particular reason.

Hit the jump to check out the brief clip. The film stars Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler, Ron Eldard, Noah Emmerich, Gabriel Basso, Joel Courtney, Ryan Lee, Zach Mills, and Amanda Michalka. Super 8 opens June 10th.

New SUPER 8 Clip
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: May 16th, 2011 at 9:24 pm

Paramount released the first clip from Super 8 earlier today, and followed up tonight with clip number two. The second clip opens right where the last clip ended, so together you have a full action-packed minute of Super 8, folks. (Actually, based on some choppy editing, I’m guessing they crammed at least couple minutes screentime devoted to kids goofing around with a camera then train crashery into said minute.)

Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler, Ron Eldard, Noah Emmerich, Gabriel Basso, Joel Courtney, Ryan Lee, Zach Mills, and Amanda Michalka star. Written and directed by J.J. Abrams in collaboration with producer Steven Spielberg, Super 8 opens June 10. Watch both clips after the jump.

Rachel McAdams Talks SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS and Working with Terrence Malick

by Christina Radish    Posted: May 5th, 2011

This week, we got a chance to speak with Rachel McAdams, who is currently promoting another project that we’ll be writing about later. But, in the meantime, we wanted to post what she had to say about revisiting her role as Irene Adler for a cameo in the upcoming Sherlock Holmes sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, as well as working with Terrence Malick on an untitled film that is being described as “a powerful and moving love story.”
While McAdams said that she isn’t actually sure of her her role in the Malick film (meaning that she’s either being very coy, or that she only received her own script pages), she did admit to there being a bit of a love triangle involving her character. She also talked about the extensive preparation that Malick requires, and said that working with him was a wonderful and inspiring experience. Check out what she had to say after the jump.

First Clip from Nicolas Winding Refn’s DRIVE Starring Ryan Gosling

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 5th, 2011

drive-movie-image-ryan-gosling-slice-01
One of my most-anticipated films this year is Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive.  I’ve become a big Refn fan after seeing the Pusher trilogy and Bronson and the cast for Drive is outstanding: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Christina Hendricks, Bryan Cranston, Ron Perlman, Oscar Isaac, and Albert Brooks.  The story centers on a Hollywood stunt driver (Gosling) who moonlights as a getaway driver.  The first clip from the film has gone online and is more about the “getaway driver” part of his resume.  What I really like about this clip is that while they could choose to show us your standard getaway chase, Refn is taking time to show us the character’s intelligence and that putting the pedal to the medal isn’t necessarily the best course of action—but that there will definitely be some action.
Hit the jump to check out the clip.  Drive will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.  It opens in the U.S. on September 16th.

Bill Murray Will Play Franklin D. Roosevelt in HYDE PARK ON HUDSON

by Phil Brown   Posted: May 5th, 2011

Any time it’s announced that Bill Murray will star in a movie, it’s exciting news. Quite apart from the fact that he’s one of the greatest comedic big screen presences of all time, the guy is notoriously hard to sign on to any project. But today after months of circling the role, Murray has officially committed to play Franklin D. Roosevelt in the historical drama Hyde Park On Hudson, a film about King George VI and Queen Elizabeth spending a weekend at FDR’s upstate New York home unsurprisingly called Hyde Park On Hudson. No start date is in place yet as Focus Features plans to seek international buyers for the project at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and given Murray’s official involvement, it shouldn’t be a hard sell. Though this will most likely be a serious role for Murray, the idea of him applying his hangdog deadpan comic charm to the role of the 32nd US president is just too sweet to resist. Hit the jump for further details on this bizarrely awesome casting choice.

Trailer for COLOMBIANA Starring Zoe Saldana

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 5th, 2011

The trailer for the action-thriller Colombiana has gone online.  Working from a script by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen (Taken), the film stars Zoe Saldana as woman who, after witnessing her parents’ murder as a child in Bogota, grows up to be a stone-cold assassin.  While she works during the day as a hitwoman, at night she deals out vigilante justice in her quest to take down the mobsters responsible for the death of her parents.   I like the idea of a female batman who uses a gun, but this may be the most generic action movie trailer I’ve ever seen.  I’m a fan of Saldana so hopefully the movie has more personality and individually than the trailer.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Michael Vartan, Callum Blue, and Cliff Curtis.  Colombiana opens September 2nd.

Sam Claflin to Play Prince in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 4th, 2011

Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman can’t seem to find a huntsman, but they’ve now landed on a prince.  Deadline reports that rising star Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) will play the prince in the re-imagining of the fairy tale which stars Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen.  The story centers on Snow White escaping from the Evil Queen and learning to fend for herself from the Huntsman.  On Monday, we reported that Chris Hemsworth (Thor) was the frontrunner to play the huntsman but casting leads on that role seem to change from day to day.  If Hemsworth were cast, it would probably change the Snow White-Huntsman relationship from protege-mentor to a love story.
Claflin will star alongside Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore in The Seventh Son before moving on to shoot Huntsman in the fall.  Snow White and the Huntsman is set to open on December 21, 2012.

Art house fans can officially prepare to swoon because the first clip from Terrence Malick’s highly anticipated and endlessly delayed The Tree Of Life has hit the internettoday. The film is set to premiere at this years Cannes Film Festival and open in the US a few short weeks later, but other than that precious little is known.
It’s a project that Malick has been nursing since the 70s and editing for almost two years now. All that’s been revealed about the plot is that the film will star Sean Penn as a man struggling to come to terms with the meaning of life and the complicated relationship he had with his father during a time of lost innocence he experienced in the 50s. Oh yeah, all this will supposedly be intertwined with scenes depicting the formation of the earth and the universe (including dinosaurs) that Malick has spent years designing with special effects guru Douglas Trumbull (2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner). The film stars Penn, Brad Pitt, and Jessica Chastain and will be released on May 27th. Hit the jump to see the clip.

Bradley Cooper in Talks to Play Lucifer in PARADISE LOST

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: May 4th, 2011

Bradley Cooper’s upcoming slate is looking quite full. The actor just recently entered negotiations to star in The Crow remake, and now he’s in talks to star as Lucifer in director Alex Proyas’ (Knowing) adaptation of Paradise Lost. The film has been in development for quite some time, with Proyas signing on last September. The 17th-century epic poem is about the Satan’s temptation of Adam and Eve and the pair’s eventual expulsion from the Garden of Eden, with an epic war between archangels Lucifer and Michael taking place in heaven.
Variety reports that Proyas’ adaptation “will be crafted as an action vehicle that will include aerial warfare, possibly shot in 3D,” which is exactly what John Milton had in mind when writing the epic poem. While no official offer has been made, Cooper is apparently “eager” to take the role. Funnily enough, Proyas directed the original 1994 version of The Crow, so maybe they’ve bonded over their mutual admiration for eye makeup? The script for Paradise Lost has been tackled by no less than five writers, with Ryan Condal turning in the latest draft. Hit the jump for a synopsis of Milton’s poem. .... http://collider.com/bradley-cooper-paradise-lost/89002/

Trailer for DOLPHIN TALE Starring Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, and Harry Connick Jr.

by Jason Barr    Posted: April 7th, 2011

A trailer for director Charles Martin Smith’s Dolphin Tale has landed online. Starring Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Harry Connick Jr., and Kris Kristofferson, the film tells the story of a dolphin, Winter, who loses most of her tail to a crab trap and is aided in her recovery by the combined efforts of a doctor (Freeman) who builds a prosthetic tail and a family (Judd, Connick, etc.) who perhaps wills her to survive. While unremarkable, the trailer does a nice job of painting the film in the inspirational light it is meant to be cast. Of course, the “from the studio and producers of The Blind Side” reminder doesn’t hurt in aiding that end either.
Dolphin Tale hits 3D theaters this fall on September 23rd. Hit the jump to check out the trailer. Also, in case you missed it, you can check out our set visit preview by clicking here.

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to Direct THE CROW

Per the release, Fresnadillo is expected to co-write the project’s script with an as-of-yet unnamed scribe. Although casting details announcements are still forthcoming, the release confirms that Fresnadillo’s film will focus on the character Eric Draven and that production is aiming to begin this Fall. In discussing the reboot, producer Edward Pressman says:
“The original Crow was groundbreaking cinema; its gothic visual and musical ideas influenced a generation and cinema itself. With Juan Carlos, we have every confidence that his new Crow will have a similar impact on the contemporary audience.”

Ben Affleck in Talks to Join Baz Lurhman’s THE GREAT GATSBY

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 7th, 2011

While director Baz Lurhman is busy fine-tuning his adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby for the big screen, it looks like he may have added another star to the cast. Ben Affleck is currently in talks to join Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire in the film. Deadline reports that Affleck is mulling over the role of Tom Buchanan, husband of Daisy who will be played by Mulligan. DiCaprio is set as Gatsby himself and Maguire will take on narrator Nick Carraway.
Affleck isn’t a sure thing, as he’s currently prepping his next directorial outing Argo, about the 1979 hostage crisis in Iran. However, Deadline seems to think that Affleck will find the time in his schedule to fit Gatsby in. The adaptation is set to start shooting in Australia in August. The Hobbit Set Photos Featuring Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins

More spy photos have come in from the set of director Peter Jackson's The Hobbit. While yesterday's pics offered a look at Andy Serkis in preparation to shoot scenes as Gollum, today's images offer a first look at Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins. Well, we think it's Martin Freeman. Even the cameraman isn't sure if its actually the actor or a stand-in. But these photos do offer a look at the clothes Bilbo will be wearing. We are also given a look at a mysterious actor in creature make-up. Check out these new images below.

John Travolta Officially In For Gotti

published: 2011-03-30 16:47:15 Author: Mack Rawden
It’s been months since we last heard John Travolta was offered the role of mobster John Gotti, but until today, the project seemed to have stalled. And why shouldn’t it have after producer Mark Fiore made some wild comments about it shaping up to be the next Godfather? You can’t just say shit like that. Even if you think it, tell people you’re optimistic or that you have hopes it could go down as a mafia classic. It’s like a baseball player telling the media he’s the next Babe Ruth.

Hyperbole aside, this Gotti biopic is moving forward, and today it took one more step toward relevancy. According to Variety, Travolta has officially accepted the lead role of the so-called Teflon Don. For years, Gotti sauntered through the streets of New York, openly welcoming publicity and ruling the city’s underworld with an iron fist. By the time his lead hitman Sammy The Bull turned on him in 1991, he was perhaps the most famous mob figure since Lucky Luciano, Al Capone or Meyer Lansky.

The film, entitled Gotti: Three Generations, will be helmed by Nick Cassavetes and should begin shooting shortly in New York City. It loosely intertwines the Gotti family lineage, focusing not only on Gotti’s career trajectory but also his relationship with his son who eventually turned his back on a life of crime.

In reality, there is enough of a story here to be the next Godfather, but I’ll reserve such praise until I actually see it.

Editor's Note: There seems to be a ton of confusion on the internet as to who exactly John Travolta will be playing. The famous John Gotti is technically John Gotti Jr.; however, he's frequently called John Gotti Sr. and his son, a producer on the film, goes by John Gotti Jr. As there were initial rumors that James Franco was in talks for the younger Gotti, I'm assuming Travolta is in play for the older, more famous Gotti. Many outlets have run pictures of Travolta next to the older Gotti, all while saying he'll play John Gotti Jr. Who exactly that refers to is anyone's guess.

First Look at Shia LaBeouf in John Hillcoat’s THE WETTEST COUNTY IN THE WORLD
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 23rd, 2011

While John Hillcoat’s The Proposition and The Road never completely clicked for me, I know he has a great film in him and I’m hoping that great film is The Wettest County in the World. Based off the novel by Matt Bondourant, Wettest County centers on two brothers (played by Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy) who become bootleggers in the American south during Prohibition. Working from a script by Nick Cave (The Proposition), the film has an incredible cast that includes not only LaBeouf and Hardy, but also Mia Wasikowska, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Dane DeHaan, and Jessica Chastain. Oh, and Ellis will also be scoring the film. You need to be excited for this movie.

A set photo of Shia LaBeouf has recently leaked online and shows him dressed up in period garb. Hit the jump to check out the image along with a synopsis of the novel.

New Red-Band Trailer for YOUR HIGHNESS
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 23rd, 2011

Universal has released a new red-band trailer for David Gordon Green’s Your Highness. While it’s not as long as the previous red-band trailer, almost all of the footage is new and there are many great jokes to be had. Rather than recite them to you, you should just hit jump and check out the not-safe-for-work trailer even if you are at work. Live dangerously.

Your Highness stars Danny McBride, James Franco, Zooey Deschanel, and Natalie Portman. It opens April 8th. ......read more;  http://collider.com/your-highness-red-band-trailer/82028/

First Trailer for THE BIG BANG Starring Antonio Banderas
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 23rd, 2011
The first trailer for The Big Bang has hit the web. Directed by Tony Krantz (Otis), the film stars Antonio Banderas as a private detective who is hired to find a missing stripper. That’s about all the plot I’m able to boil down because, judging from the tilt-heavy trailer, this flick looks to be a bit of a mind-bender in the vein of Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The Big Bang stars Banderas, William Fichtner, James Van Der Beek, Snoop Dogg, Delroy Lindo and Rebecca Mader. Anchor Bay Films is set to release the film on May 13th.

Terrence Malick’s THE TREE OF LIFE to Premiere at Cannes Film Festival in May
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 23rd, 2011
Director Terrence Malick’s highly anticipated, and long in the works, The Tree of Life is finally being released this May, and now word comes that the film will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier that month. Variety reports that it’s still unclear whether Malick will screen the film in-competition or not, but The Tree of Life will definitely be there. Back in 2010, it looked like the film might screen at that Cannes Film Festival, but the ever-meticulous Malick didn’t feel that the flick was ready just yet.

The Tree of Life stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain and follows a life from childhood in the 1950’s to adulthood in the modern day. If the trailer is any indication, audiences are in for a very characteristically Malick experience (visceral, thought-provoking, etc.). If you missed it, be sure to check out Steve’s interview with Chastain in which she describes the experience of working with an auteur like Malick. The Tree of Life hits theaters on May 27th. The 2011 Cannes Film Festival takes place from May 11th – May 22nd. Hit the jump for the official synopsis.

First Look at Terrence Malick’s Untitled Romantic Drama Starring Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 23rd, 2011

The first image from Terrence Malick’s untitled romantic drama has gone online.  Not much is known about the plot, but the film stars Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Javier Bardem, Barry Pepper, Olga Kurylenko, and Rachel Weisz.  The image, which features Affleck and McAdams, looks gorgeous.  But saying that a Malick film looks beautiful is like saying the sky is blue (except when Malick shoots it and then it becomes a haunting reddish haze of torment and regret).
Hit the jump to check out the image.  Malick’s previous film, The Tree of Life, finally hits theaters on May 27th.  No release date has been announced for his untitled feature.

Wolfgang Petersen to Direct OLD MAN’S WAR

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 23rd, 2011

Paramount Pictures has picked up the rights to the John Scalzi’s sci-fi novel series Old Man’s WarDeadline reports that Wolfgang Petersen (Poseidon) will direct a script by David Self (Road to Perdition).  But that shouldn’t have been their first step.  The first step should’ve been to cast Gary Oldman.
The story centers on a 75-year-old man who chooses to have his memories and personality implanted onto a genetically enhanced body.  The trade-off is that he has to work as a soldier and protect human colonists on a distant planet.  However, he’s injured during a battle and rescued by a special-forces soldier that strongly reminds him of his dead wife.  Convinced that the soldier is his wife, he abandons his unit and does anything to be with her.  That last part is where I think the story gets boring.  I would much rather follow the adventures of a group of young space marines who do nothing but offer people butterscotch candies and complain about loud music.

Susanne Bier to Remake French Thriller RAPT

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 23rd, 2011

Oscar-nominated Danish director Susanne Bier (In a Better World) has signed on to direct a remake of the French thriller Rapt.  According to Deadline, Bier has almost finished the script with her In a Better World co-writer Anders Thomas Jensen.  Released in 2009, Rapt is based on a true story and centers on a corporate chairman who is held hostage while organized criminals, the family, the corporation, and the police are forced to face off against each other.  Producer Patrick Milling Smith says “The underlying story is definitely a high stakes thriller but it’s also a very strong character piece. That’s why we went after Susanne to re-imagine it with Anders because she was keen to work on a thriller. At the same time she’s one of the best when it comes to getting into the nuances of character and making it authentic.”
While I was disappointed with In a Better World, I’m still eager to check out more of Bier’s filmography, especially her 2007 film After the Wedding.  Hit the jump to check out the UK trailer for Rapt.

Ben Schwartz to Write SOAPDISH Remake

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 23rd, 2011

It looks like Paramount is in the mood for a good old fashioned soap opera flick. And by good old fashioned, I mean a remake of that one soap opera movie. Paramount is getting the ball rolling on a remake of the 1991 comedy Soapdish and they’ve hired actor/writer Ben Schwartz the write the screenplay. The original took place behind the scenes of a daytime soap opera and featured an all-star cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Kevin Kline, Elizabeth Shue, Teri Hatchter, Garry Marshall and a pre-daytime TV personality Whoopi Goldberg.
THR reports that Allen Greisman, who was one of the producers of the original, is on board to produce the remake alongside Rob Reiner. Schwartz has appeared in The Other Guys and Parks and Recreation, and is responsible for writing some episodes of Robot Chicken and Hugh Jackman’s opening number for the 81st Academy Awards, for which he won an Emmy. Schwartz is also working on Would You Rather? with producer Brian Grazer for Universal and will next been seen as an actor in the family comedy Peep World.

Warner Bros. to Remake THE BODYGUARD

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 23rd, 2011

Apparently it’s 90’s remake day. We previously reported that a remake of the comedy Soapdish is in the works, and now it looks like Warner Bros. is working on a remake of the 1992 romantic-thriller The Bodyguard. The original, of course, stars Whitney Houston as a famous singer and Kevin Costner as the Secret-Service agent tasked with protecting her from a dangerous stalker. As you well know, the two become romantically involved and Houston gets all dramatic insisting that she will always love Costner.
Deadline reports that Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer, whose action comedy Family Getaway ended up on last year’s Black List of the best unproduced screenplays, will script the flick. Apparently this version updates the love story, turning the Costner-character into an Iraqi war veteran whose first job back on US soil is protecting Houston’s star character. This modern take will show how “the world of Twitter, Google Maps and TMZ has made access to celebrities easier than ever,” providing some much needed social networking drama to raise the stakes, since most social networking services aren’t at all inherently stalkerish. This is WB’s second music-driven remake in the works, with Clint Eastwood set to direct Beyonce in a remake of A Star is Born.

First Footage from the Set of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 4th, 2010

The trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides premieres on December 13th, but today we have the first footage courtesy of Enterainment Tonight’s visit to the set.  The clip is a bit scattershot in focus, but features Johnny Depp hopping across the tops of carriages in a neat set piece, a look at franchise newbie Penelope Cruz in action, and commentary from producer Jerry Bruckheimer among some truly impressive sets built on location in Hawaii and London.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides — directed by Rob Marshall — hits 3D theaters on May 20, 2011.  (Don’t worry: it won’t be the last.)  Hit the jump to watch the footage.
Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise.  When Jack crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), he’s not sure if it’s love—or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more:  Blackbeard or the woman from his past.

Bootleg Trailer for THE TREE OF LIFE Starring Brad Pitt

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 4th, 2010

I’ve been hesitant to write too much leading up to Terrence Malick’s latest, The Tree of Life.  The film community is understandably excited, you see, because Malick is a cinematic god.  One who has released only four films — at least three of which are unqualified masterpieces — since 1973.  Only I don’t really know this, because the filmography of Terrence Malick represent a huge gap in my film knowledge.
But the trailer for The Tree of Life was attached to my viewing of Black Swan this weekend.  And it is fantastic.  The gap will be rectified by year’s end.
A bootleg of the trailer — featuring stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and Jessica Chastain — has been uploaded to the internet.  Check it out after the jump.

The quality/angle isn’t great, and this will surely be taken down shortly, but it gives you a taste of what’s to come after of months of anticipation.  And hey, if there’s a screening of Black Swan near you, get thee to a theatre.  We’ll post the official trailer as soon as it’s released online.  The Tree of Life opens May 27, 2011.
Here’s the note Malick wrote for AFM that describes the film:
From the Desk of Terrence Malick….
We trace the evolution of an eleven-year-old boy in the Midwest, JACK, one of three brothers.  At first all seems marvelous to the child.  He sees as his mother does with the eyes of his soul.  She represents the way of love and mercy, where the father tries to teach his son the world’s way of putting oneself first.  Each parent contends for his allegiance, and Jack must reconcile their claims.  The picture darkens as he has his first glimpses of sickness, suffering and death.  The world, once a thing of glory, becomes a labyrinth.
From this story is that of adult Jack, a lost soul in a modern world, seeking to discover amid the changing scenes of time that which does not change: the eternal scheme of which we are a part.  When he sees all that has gone into our world’s preparation, each thing appears a miracle—precious, incomparable.  Jack, with his new understanding, is able to forgive his father and take his first steps on the path of life.
The story ends in hope, acknowledging the beauty and joy in all things, in the everyday and above all in the family—our first school—the only place that most of us learn the truth about the world and ourselves, or discover life’s single most important lesson, of unselfish love.

Sundance 2011: First Images from John C. Reilly’s TERRI and Billy Crudup’s THE CONVINCER

by Tommy Cook    Posted: December 4th, 2010

With Sundance having announced their 2011 feature film line up, images for the selected films have begun to be released – case in point new stills from Terri and The Convincer (previously covered here). Terri, starring newcomer Jacob Wysocki and John C. Reilly (Cyrus), focuses on a lonely high school outcast (Wysocki) who slowly comes into his own. Stills from the film include director Azazel Jacobs talking with one of his young actors behind the scenes and an image of Reilly and Wysocki having what appears to be a stern conversation within the film. It’s hard to gauge from the stills whether Reilly will be going super serious (alla Magnolia) or outlandishly silly (see any of the Adam McKay films) or painfully funny (see Cyrus). Perhaps the “not knowing” is indicative of Reilly’s versatility. There are very few actors with the capability to pull of such opposite extremes of emotion with as much ease as Reilly does. Most people look forward to a new Brad Pitt performance or Johnny Depp performance; but for myself  it is John C. Reilly’s performances that I eagerly anticipate.
The Convincer, a film noir directed by Jill Sprecher (Clockwatchers), concerns an insurance salesman who gets in way over his head. Stills from the film feature stars Greg Kinnear (As Good As It Gets), Billy Crudup (Almost Famous) and Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine) pointing at one another and looking very serious. For the stills in question, hit the jump.

Terri (Director: Azazel Jacobs; Screenwriters: Patrick Dewitt and Azazel Jacobs) – Orphaned to an uncle who is fading away, mercilessly teased by his peers and roundly ignored by his teachers, Terri is alienated and alone. When the dreaded vice-principal sees something of himself in Terri, they establish a friendship which opens Terri up to the possibility that life is not something to be endured, but something to be shared, and even enjoyed. Cast: Jacob Wysocki, John C. Reilly, Creed Bratton, Olivia Crocicchia, Bridger Zadina.
