Christopher Meloni Up for MAN OF STEEL

by Adam Chitwood  Posted: June 24th, 2011

Following his surprising exit from NBC’s Law and Order: SVU, Christopher Meloni just landed himself a not too shabby gig. Deadline reports that the actor is currently in negotiations to star in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. There’s no word on what part he’s up for, but the report states that it’s a “major role” (one hopes it involves fridge-humping). Henry Cavill is set as Superman himself, while Amy Adams will take on Lois Lane. Warner Bros. rounded up some A-list talent for Superman’s parents: Kevin Costner and Diane Lane will play Clark Kent’s adoptive Earth parents, while Russell Crowe is poised to star as biological father Jor-El and Julia Ormond recently entered talks to play his Kryptonian mother Lara Lor-Van.
On the villain side, Michael Shannon will be doing his evil thing as General Zod and Antje Traue is set as Faora. Casting should be close to complete by now, with production set to begin next month in Vancouver. Snyder directs from a script by David Goyer, with Christopher Nolan producing. Man of Steel is eying a holiday 2012 release.  http://collider.com/christopher-meloni-man-of-steel/98734/

Robin Williams Rows GENTLY DOWN THE STREAM; Ben Barnes Is THE SEVENTH SON

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 24th, 2011

We have couple of casting bits to bring you this Friday afternoon. First up, Robin Williams has joined writer/director Justin Zackham’s (writer, The Bucket List) wedding comedy Gently Down the Stream. Williams brings another star to an already stellar cast that includes Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Amanda Seyfried, and Katherine Heigl. Per Variety, the Oscar-winning actor will play the role of Father Monaghan in the pic that tells the story of a long-divorced couple (De Niro and Keaton) who pretend that they’re still married for the sake of their adopted son’s upcoming wedding. Rounding out the Gently Down the Stream cast are Susan Sarandon, Patricia Rae, and Ben Barnes. Production on the film is expected to begin this July.
Speaking of Ben Barnes, The Chronicles of Narnia actor has signed on to star alongside Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore in the Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures fantasy project The Seventh Son. Variety reports that Barnes is in line for the title role (the same one Sam Claffin was once in talks for) which is described as “the seventh son of a seventh son” who learns all things wizard-related. Directed by Sergei Bodrov (Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan), the pic is based on Joseph Delaney’s young adult book series. For more on the project, hit the jump to read a synopsis for the series’ first installment, Revenge of the Witchhttp://collider.com/robin-williams-gently-down-the-stream-ben-barnes-the-seventh-son/98665/

First Image of John Cusack as Edgar Allen Poe in THE RAVEN – Updated With Official Synopsis

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 24th, 2011

john-cusack-the-raven-image-slice
The first image of John Cusack as Edgar Allen Poe in the thriller The Raven has landed online. Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), the film is set in 1849 and stars Cusack as the iconic author/poet who joins forces with a detective in hopes of stopping a murderer who is inspired by Poe’s work. Luke Evans, Alice Eve, and Brendan Gleeson also star in the pic. I’m really liking the Se7en vibe the logline gives and, as a fan of both Poe and Cusack, I’m pretty excited about checking this one out when it hits theaters on March 9th, 2012.
Update: The official synopsis has been sent out.  It’s below the picture.
Directed by: James McTeigue
Written by:  Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare
Cast: John Cusack, Luke Evans, Alice Eve, Brendan Gleeson and Oliver Jackson-Cohen
Produced by: Mark D Evans, Trevor Macy, and Aaron Ryder
Executive Producer: Jesus Martinez

Synopsis:

In this gritty thriller, Edgar Allen Poe (John Cusack, Being John Malkovich) joins forces with a young Baltimore detective (Luke Evans, Immortals) to hunt down a mad serial killer who’s using Poe’s own works as the basis in a string of brutal murders. Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), the film also stars Alice Eve (Sex and the City 2), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Faster).
When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper—part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story.
Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe’s writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author’s help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late.

Paul Haggis in Talks to Pen Spy Film Based on Author Daniel Silva’s Character Gabriel Allon

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 24th, 2011

Two-time Oscar-winner Paul Haggis (Crash) is in talks to script a spy film for Universal based on Daniel Silva’s popular character, Gabriel Allon. While possible, it’s unclear whether or not the writer/director would also helm the film given that the project is still in the very early stages of development. For those unfamiliar with the character (a.k.a myself just 30 minutes ago), Allon has appeared in ten of Silva’s novels and is described as a fortysomething Mossad agent who restores art as part of his “quiet job” and covertly investigates terrorist activities as part of his “slightly less quiet job.”
24 Frames reports that the exact details of Haggis’ script are unknown but that Universal is hoping to turn the property into a franchise (surprise, surprise). Former NBC head Jeff Zucker will produce the pic which joins the Bourne franchise as the second spy property in active development at the studio. For a taste of what could be coming in Haggis’ script, hit the jump for a synopsis of Gabriel Allon’s first appearance, the Daniel Silva novel The Kill Artist. http://collider.com/paul-haggis-gabriel-allon-daniel-silva/98632/

Lily Cole and Sam Spruell Added to SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 24th, 2011

Lily Cole (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) and Sam Spruell (The Hurt Locker) have joined the ever-expanding cast of director Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman. Cole and Spruell become the latest in a long line of casting news for the pic which has added the likes of Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Eddie Izzard, Toby Jones, and Ray Winstone this week alone. Per Variety, Cole will play Greta while Spruell will make a turn as Finn, the Queen’s henchman who is responsible for finding and killing Snow White and the Huntsman. In addition to the already mentioned cast, Snow White and the Huntsman also stars Chris Hemsworth (the Huntsman), Charlize Theron (the Queen), and Kristen Stewart (Snow White). The film is slated to begin production this fall while eyeing a June 1st, 2012 theatrical release. http://collider.com/lily-cole-snow-white-and-the-huntsman-sam-spruell/98600/

First Official Photo of John Cusack as Edgar Allen Poe in "The Raven" Thriller

Posted: June 24th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Relativity Media has unveiled the first official photo of John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe in "The Raven" thriller, directed by James McTeigue (Ninja Assassin, V for Vendetta) and set to hit theaters on March 9th, 2012. Check it out below.

The new movie is a fictional story about what would happen if a serial killer challenged poet Edgar Allan Poe (Cusack) to solve a series of killings inspired by his own stories.

"It's sort of 'Se7en' meets a series of Poe stories. It's set in 1850s Baltimore, and it's about creating Poe's version of 1850s Baltimore, him moving through it. So it has a lot of the Poe stories interwoven into it," McTeigue previously stated, adding that Poe's real life will be used in the film as well

First Official Look At John Cusack In The Raven

published: 2011-06-24 16:59:21 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Though I'm not entirely sure why, I'm actually looking forward to James McTeigue's The Raven. Admittedly it's kind of strange to take one of history's greatest writers, Edgar Allan Poe, and turn him into a detective, but it could be fun and has a solid cast lined up in John Cusack, Alice Eve, Luke Evans and Brendan Gleeson. Back in November, some on-set photographers managed to get a shot of Cusack in costume, but today the first official photo has been released.

Though the new still cuts off at the actor's thighs so you can't see if he's still wearing those sweet black sneakers, you can't say that Cusack doesn't look pretty damn cool in the get up. Based on a script by Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare, the plot is about a serial killer who is basing his crimes on those in Poe's stories. The movie isn't set to be released until March 9, 2012, but it will be featured in a Hall H panel at this year's San Diego Comic Con, so don't be too surprised if footage finds its way online sooner than later.

James Caan May Join I HATE YOU DAD Starring Andy Samberg and Adam Sandler
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 31st, 2011
The Adam Sandler/Andy Samberg comedy I Hate You Dad may have just found an Academy Award nominee to join the cast. The Wrap reports that Colombia Pictures is looking at grabbing James Caan for a role in the film. The plot revolves around a father who moves in with his son and his son’s fiancé just before they’re about to get married.

Sean Anders and John Morris (Hot Tub Time Machine) are set to direct the comedy from a script by David Case, which subsequently got a rewrite by Ken Marino and David Wain (Role Models).

Sam Claflin and Alicia Vikander in Talks for THE SEVENTH SON
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: March 31st, 2011
Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures reportedly offered Alex Pettyfer and Jennifer Lawrence the parts of Tom and Alice in The Seventh Son — the upcoming adaptation of the first book in the Last Apprentice series — but they passed on the roles. Since then, the studios cast out a wide net: Sam Claflin, Caleb Landry-Jones, James Frecheville for Tom; Alicia Vikander, Imogen Poots, Felicity Jones, Gabrielle Wild, and Dianna Agron for Alice. Variety reports that Claflin and Vikander have emerged from the young Hollywood scuffle to enter negotiations to star. Claflin is poised for a breakout as the effective Orlando Bloom replacement in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Vikander is a Swedish actress seeking her first credit in Hollywood — WB and Legendary considered her earlier in the year for a role in the sequel to Clash of the Titans.

From a creative standpoint, Vikander may have lucked out. Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, and their ten combined Oscar nominations are in talks to play the Spook and Mother Malkin, respectively, for director Sergey Bodrov (Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan). Joseph Delaney’s young adult novels center on “a 13-year-old who’s the seventh son of a seventh son and learns about wizardry from a forbidding spook.” Read the synopsis for Revenge of the Witch, the first in the series, after the break.

James Marsden is Charles Manson in "The Dead Circus"
Posted: March 31st, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Palermo Pictures is aiming to begin filming "The Dead Circus" this summer and is currently speaking to James Marsden (X-Men), Michael C Hall ("Dexter") and Melissa Leo (The Fighter) to star.

The film is a fictitious story about the actual mysterious death of "I Fought the Law" singer Bobby Fuller. His song became a hit in 1966, but a week after, the 23-year-old singer was found dead. The death was ruled a suicide even though his body was battered, with gasoline poured down his throat.

In the drama, a grieving screenwriter (still to be cast) plunges into a crusade to solve the mystery of Fuller's death. Leo will play a Manson Family matriarch who comes out of hiding five years after the murder to reveal to the writer that the answer to his questions might be found in 16 mm snuff films buried in Death Valley. Marsden will play Charles Manson. Hall will play a corrupt, wheelchair-bound manager of the dead musician.

Disney has released a new trailer for Rob Marshall’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. I want to be excited for this flick but I still have mixed feelings on it. On the one hand, I can’t believe that the plot is yet again “Jack must get the Black Pearl back from another pirate.” But on the other hand, once the Pirates‘ theme music kicked in near the end of the trailer, I suddenly became pumped to return to this crazy world and see more adventure on the high seas. There are some good jokes in the trailer, some imaginative designs, and I hope that this movie delivers.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer along with two new images. Pirates of the Caribbean stars Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, and Geoffrey Rush. It opens in 3D on May 20th.

Julianne Moore Joins Jeff Bridges in THE SEVENTH SON
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 21st, 2011
Julianne Moore has joined Jeff Bridges in Sergey Bodrov’s The Seventh Son. The film is an adaptation of the young adult novel The Last Apprentice and follows a young exorcist-in-training who can see and hear ghosts and smell death. Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Moore will play Mother Malkin, “the most sinister of witches who uses blood magic.” As we previously reported, Bridges will play Exorcist Master Gregory, aka “The Spook”. Alex Pettyfer and Jennifer Lawrence were both offered roles in The Seventh Son, but they have reportedly passed on the flick.

While Moore was overlooked in the awards race for her great performance in The Kids Are All Right, she’s still been picking up a slew of new roles. In the past two months, she’s signed on to the vampire thriller Innocence, Paul Weitz’ adaptation of Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, and she’ll play Sarah Palin in the HBO movie Game Change. Moore will next be seen in the romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. with Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling. Hit the jump for a synopsis of The Last Apprentice.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt NOT Playing Alberto Falcone in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES?
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 21st, 2011
joseph-gordon-levitt-alberto-falcone-slice-01
When Joseph Gordon-Levitt entered talks to join The Dark Knight Rises, it kicked off heavy speculation on which role he would play. That sweet speculation even glided across the villain of Alberto Falcone aka “Holiday Killer” and this past weekend, Variety reported that a Batman rumor turned out to be true. But now EW is pumping the breaks and saying that Gordon-Levitt is in the film but not playing Falcone and I personally couldn’t be happier. I’m overjoyed not because I have anything against the character, but because now the empty rumor-mongering can continue and people can say which role they think Gordon-Levitt would be good for even though they have no idea how Christopher Nolan plans to interpret a pre-existing character from the comics.

Filming on The Dark Knight Rises begins in May and the film is set for a July 20, 2012 release date. Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman will return to the franchise, and they’ll be joined by Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, Tom Hardy as Bane, as well as Juno Temple and possibly Marion Cotillard.

BLUE VALENTINE Director Talks “Epic” THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES; Ryan Gosling to Star

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 4th, 2011

One of the most heart-wrenching films of this past Oscar season had to be Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. The film shows, in painfully honest detail, the destruction of a marriage. Williams’ performance got her an Oscar nod, and now the man behind the camera is talking about his next feature. Director Derek Cianfrance said his next project, The Place Beyond the Pines, will be about “the transformative power of fatherhood and the idea of what happens though generations, the things that get passed down.” Furthermore, his Blue Valentine star Ryan Gosling is set to play the lead:
“Ryan’s going to play Luke, a motorcycle stunt rider who finds out he has a baby and he tries to become a father. It’s kind of an epic movie. It takes place over a couple of generations and it’s kind of a crime story, kind of a mystery. I’ve had people tell me they feel like its The Deer Hunter meets The Godfather.”
In his interview with The Playlist, Cianfrance said the film is influenced by the works of author Jack London. He also revealed that they’re in the middle of financing right now and plan on shooting sometime this summer in New York. The director is also currently working on a bodybuilding comedy for HBO.

Jeff Bridges to Play Exorcist in THE SEVENTH SON

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 4th, 2011

Earlier this week, we reported that Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four) had been offered a starring role in The Last Apprentice and that Jeff Bridges and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) were also circling the project.  Just Jared reports that the project is now titled The Seventh Son (it was formerly titled “The Spook’s Apprentice“) and that Bridges is officially on board to play an exorcist.  The film, which is set in the 1700s, follows Tom Ward (Pettyfer, if he signs on), an exorcist-in-training who is able to see and hear ghosts and can smell the presence of death.  Lawrence would play a suspected witch.  Sergey Bodrov (Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan) will direct.
Hit the jump for a synopsis of the first novel in the Last Apprentice series.
Here’s the synopsis for The Last Apprentice: Revenge of the Witch:
Twelve-year-old Thomas Ward, as the seventh son of a seventh son, has no inheritance and is bored with farm work, and even though his new job will mean the superstitious villagers will forever shun him, he is eager to go off to adventure with the tall, hooded man he calls the Spook. His mother, a magical person herself, approves, and the Spook’s teaching is strict but kind. But when Tom has only learned enough to be able to control their house-boggart, he is tricked by Alice, the young daughter of a witch family, into inadvertently releasing and then killing Mother Malkin, a witch the Spook has imprisoned in a pit. This is no polite wicca-type witch, but a snuffling, slime-trailing, cannibalistic creature reminiscent of Tolkien’s nasgils. The story of Tom’s escape from the reincarnated witch’s hideous revenge is full of horrible details, as Alice helps, and then once again betrays him. This well-crafted novel marks an auspicious start for an exciting and fast series for young teens. [Amazon]
