John Krasinski, Olivia Thirlby, and Rosemarie DeWitt in Talks for NOBODY WALKS
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: April 19th, 2011
John Krasinski, Olivia Thirlby, and Rosemarie DeWitt are in negotiations to star in Nobody Walks. You are a keen individual, and guessed from the collection of idiosyncratic actors that Nobody Walks is an independent drama. You are correct. (Note: the judges also would have accepted “low-budget dramedy.”) According to Variety, the film depicts one week in the life of “a Los Angeles family who invite a young, charismatic artist into their home, only to find her disrupting their lives.” Director Ry Russo-Young (You Won’t Miss Me) co-wrote the script with rising star Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture). Production is slated for the end of May in Los Angeles.

Ben Affleck Will NOT Star in THE GREAT GATSBY
by Adam Chitwood Posted: April 19th, 2011
It looks like Ben Affleck ultimately will not be joining the cast of Baz Lurhmann’s The Great Gatsby. After working hard to try and fit the film into his schedule, the actor was forced to turn the offer down. Deadline reports that Affleck wasn’t able to commit to The Great Gatsby because filming conflicted with his next directorial project Argo. The actor was up for the role of Tom Buchanan, husband of Carey Mulligan’s Daisy. Leonardo DiCaprio is set as Gatsby himself, and Tobey Maguire will be taking on the role of narrator Nick Carraway. Isla Fischer is also now in talks to play Myrtle Wilson.

Argo, which is being produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov (The American), revolves around the Iran hostage crisis in 1979. Production on The Great Gatsby is set to begin in August in Sydney. No word on who the frontrunner to take on Tom Buchanan is now, but apparently Lurhmann is looking to add some more Australian names to his cast to help with production costs. Hit the jump for a synopsis of The Great Gatsby.

Trailer for TERRI Starring John C. Reilly and Jacob Wysocki
by Matt Goldberg Posted: April 19th, 2011
The trailer for the indie comedy Terri has gone online. The film is a coming-of-age tale about an overweight and unpopular teen who dresses in pajamas but strikes up an unlikely friendship with his school’s vice principal (John C. Reilly). Terri played at this year’s Sundance Film Festival as well as SXSW and the reaction was positive but unenthusiastic. The general consensus seems to be that it’s enjoyable but slight and after seeing the trailer, I can understand that criticism. However, I’m a big enough fan of Reilly and co-star Creed Bratton (who is the secret weapon of NBC’s The Office) to check out the film when it plays as the opening night feature at this year’s Atlanta Film Festival.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. Terri opens July 1st.

International Trailer for BRIDESMAIDS
by Phil Brown Posted: April 19th, 2011
Anyone who enjoys watching girls behaving badly (no, not in that way) has a reason to rejoice on this fine afternoon because Universal has seen fit to release an international trailer for the upcoming Kristen Wiig romp Bridesmaids. Not much is revealed than hasn’t already been seen in the previous trailer, but a few extra chuckles are to be had in this AC/DC scored montage (in particular, Mad Men fans will enjoy a little taste of Jon Hamm sleaziness). The film has been getting some pretty positive buzz so far at preview screenings and SXSW and could be a modest early summer comedy hit provided that both the R-rated sex comedy crowd and the chick-flick crowd can join forces to support it. How much overlap exists between the two groups remains to be seen, but this is the movie to bring em; together if anything can.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film was directed by Freaks And Geeks creator Paul Feig and also features Wiig’s former SNL partner in crime Maya Rudolph, as well as Rose Byrne, Matt Lucas (Little Britain), Chris O’Dowd (The IT Crowd), and Melissa McCarthy (who frankly looks like she might steal the movie away from her co-stars). The film opens May 13th.

by Dave Trumbore Posted: April 19th, 2011
Unless you’ve been living in the land of horse and buggies for the last ten years, you know that The Fast and the Furious franchise has dominated theaters with big muscles and bigger engines. With the fifth installment, Fast Five, ready to open in less than two weeks, a new interactive trailer has popped up that is chock full of extra gearhead information. Like, did you know that the car Vin Diesel and Paul Walker drive off the cliff is a 1966 Chevy Corvette Grand Sport? Or that Jordana Brewster looks smokin’ hot in a 1966 Ford GT40?

The film stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Tyrese Gibson, produced by Neal Moritz and directed by Justin Lin. Fast Five is set to be released on April 29th. Hit the jump to check out the new interactive trailer.

First Footage from the Set of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 4th, 2010

The trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides premieres on December 13th, but today we have the first footage courtesy of Enterainment Tonight’s visit to the set.  The clip is a bit scattershot in focus, but features Johnny Depp hopping across the tops of carriages in a neat set piece, a look at franchise newbie Penelope Cruz in action, and commentary from producer Jerry Bruckheimer among some truly impressive sets built on location in Hawaii and London.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides — directed by Rob Marshall — hits 3D theaters on May 20, 2011.  (Don’t worry: it won’t be the last.)  Hit the jump to watch the footage.
Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise.  When Jack crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), he’s not sure if it’s love—or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more:  Blackbeard or the woman from his past.

Bootleg Trailer for THE TREE OF LIFE Starring Brad Pitt

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 4th, 2010

I’ve been hesitant to write too much leading up to Terrence Malick’s latest, The Tree of Life.  The film community is understandably excited, you see, because Malick is a cinematic god.  One who has released only four films — at least three of which are unqualified masterpieces — since 1973.  Only I don’t really know this, because the filmography of Terrence Malick represent a huge gap in my film knowledge.
But the trailer for The Tree of Life was attached to my viewing of Black Swan this weekend.  And it is fantastic.  The gap will be rectified by year’s end.
A bootleg of the trailer — featuring stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and Jessica Chastain — has been uploaded to the internet.  Check it out after the jump.

The quality/angle isn’t great, and this will surely be taken down shortly, but it gives you a taste of what’s to come after of months of anticipation.  And hey, if there’s a screening of Black Swan near you, get thee to a theatre.  We’ll post the official trailer as soon as it’s released online.  The Tree of Life opens May 27, 2011.
Here’s the note Malick wrote for AFM that describes the film:
From the Desk of Terrence Malick….
We trace the evolution of an eleven-year-old boy in the Midwest, JACK, one of three brothers.  At first all seems marvelous to the child.  He sees as his mother does with the eyes of his soul.  She represents the way of love and mercy, where the father tries to teach his son the world’s way of putting oneself first.  Each parent contends for his allegiance, and Jack must reconcile their claims.  The picture darkens as he has his first glimpses of sickness, suffering and death.  The world, once a thing of glory, becomes a labyrinth.
From this story is that of adult Jack, a lost soul in a modern world, seeking to discover amid the changing scenes of time that which does not change: the eternal scheme of which we are a part.  When he sees all that has gone into our world’s preparation, each thing appears a miracle—precious, incomparable.  Jack, with his new understanding, is able to forgive his father and take his first steps on the path of life.
The story ends in hope, acknowledging the beauty and joy in all things, in the everyday and above all in the family—our first school—the only place that most of us learn the truth about the world and ourselves, or discover life’s single most important lesson, of unselfish love.

Sundance 2011: First Images from John C. Reilly’s TERRI and Billy Crudup’s THE CONVINCER

by Tommy Cook    Posted: December 4th, 2010

With Sundance having announced their 2011 feature film line up, images for the selected films have begun to be released – case in point new stills from Terri and The Convincer (previously covered here). Terri, starring newcomer Jacob Wysocki and John C. Reilly (Cyrus), focuses on a lonely high school outcast (Wysocki) who slowly comes into his own. Stills from the film include director Azazel Jacobs talking with one of his young actors behind the scenes and an image of Reilly and Wysocki having what appears to be a stern conversation within the film. It’s hard to gauge from the stills whether Reilly will be going super serious (alla Magnolia) or outlandishly silly (see any of the Adam McKay films) or painfully funny (see Cyrus). Perhaps the “not knowing” is indicative of Reilly’s versatility. There are very few actors with the capability to pull of such opposite extremes of emotion with as much ease as Reilly does. Most people look forward to a new Brad Pitt performance or Johnny Depp performance; but for myself  it is John C. Reilly’s performances that I eagerly anticipate.
The Convincer, a film noir directed by Jill Sprecher (Clockwatchers), concerns an insurance salesman who gets in way over his head. Stills from the film feature stars Greg Kinnear (As Good As It Gets), Billy Crudup (Almost Famous) and Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine) pointing at one another and looking very serious. For the stills in question, hit the jump.

Terri (Director: Azazel Jacobs; Screenwriters: Patrick Dewitt and Azazel Jacobs) – Orphaned to an uncle who is fading away, mercilessly teased by his peers and roundly ignored by his teachers, Terri is alienated and alone. When the dreaded vice-principal sees something of himself in Terri, they establish a friendship which opens Terri up to the possibility that life is not something to be endured, but something to be shared, and even enjoyed. Cast: Jacob Wysocki, John C. Reilly, Creed Bratton, Olivia Crocicchia, Bridger Zadina.
