New Images of Michael C. Hall and Mos Def in DEXTER Season Six

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: July 4th, 2011

Showtime has released two new images for the upcoming sixth season of Dexter.  The first, featuring Michael C. Hall standing crouched over a crime scene on the Miami beach, could be taken from any season.  (Though perhaps eagle-eyed viewers may spot a hint or two I missed.)  The second is more revealing in its depiction of Hall eying new cast member Mos Def suspiciously.  Or rather, Dexter is eying Def’s character (a reformed criminal) suspiciously, unless these are really insightful behind-the-scenes photos.
Edward James Olmos and Colin Hanks are also new to the cast this season, which we expect to premiere in September on the heels of the July 21 Comic-Con panel.  See the images after the jump. http://collider.com/dexter-images-season-6/100394/

John Malkovich to Star in SIBERIAN EDUCATION

by Brendan Bettinger  Posted: July 4th, 2011

John Malkovich has signed on to star in Siberian Education, an adaptation of the Nicolai Lilin autobiography of the same name.  Lilin grew up in Transnitria, a lawless community between Moldova and Ukraine that still maintains a strict moral code.  According to Variety, Malkovich will play “Grandfather Kuzja, who teaches his grandson Kolyma (played by Lithuanian actor Arnas Fedaravicius) the morals of  “honest criminals.’”
Stefano Rulli, Sandro Petraglia, and director Gabriele Salvatores (I’m Not Scared) collaborated on the screenplay, set in 1985-1995.  The international production starts shooting in Lithuania at the end of August — a few scenes will film in Italy.  Read the book synopsis after the break. http://collider.com/john-malkovich-siberian-education/100382/

BRIDESMAIDS Becomes Highest Grossing R-Rated Female Comedy Ever

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: July 4th, 2011

bridesmaids-movie-image-slice-01
Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids is the little comedy that could. Despite a modest budget and no A-list stars, the Judd Apatow-produced film has been a consistent staple on the box office charts week after week. Now, after recently becoming the highest grossing entry in Judd Apatow’s library, Bridesmaids has become the highest grossing R-rated female comedy ever (via THR). The film’s current domestic tally sits at $152.9 million, enough to dethrone the previous “top R-rated female comedy” record-holder Sex and the City (apparently the term “comedy” has a loose connotation).
The script by star Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo hit that sweet spot of insane hilarity paired with a sizeable amount of heart. The film also owes a great amount of its success to director Feig (Freaks and Geeks) and the tour-de-force cast that includes Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Jon Hamm, Chris O’Dowd and stand-out Melissa McCarthy. If you’ve yet to see Bridesmaids, you’ve definitely missed out on one of the funniest movies of the year. http://collider.com/bridesmaids-highest-grossing-female-comedy/100357/

Colin Firth, Scarlett Johansson For Danny Boyle's Heist Thriller Trance

published: 2011-07-04 12:00:15 Author: Sean O'Connell
Could Oscar winner Colin Firth be leaping from the Coen Brothers’ crime comedy Gambit to a leading role in Danny Boyle’s next picture?

As Boyle snaps crucial pieces into place for his developing feature Trance, a bank-heist-gone-wrong thriller, casting rumors continue to swirl. While James McAvoy reportedly is locked in to the role of Simon, his X-Men: First Class cohort, Michael Fassbender, allegedly will not be along for the ride. Now Twitch Film is going so far as to say that Boyle actively is pursuing King’s Speech star Firth to take Fassbender’s place in the role of Aiden, though we don’t know much beyond the names of Boyle’s characters and aren’t sure how they fit into the overall narrative.

Firth isn’t the only actor on Boyle’s wish list. Scarlett Johannson is being approached for the major supporting role of Elizabeth. No formal offers have been made to either actor, but “who Boyle wants, Boyle gets.”

Johansson’s involvement, while automatically making Boyle’s film a better looking endeavor, also brings up scheduling conflicts. We know that the actress is on the hook for Joss Whedon’s current tentpole picture The Avengers, where she plays Black Widow. Her name also is attached to Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin, with Patrick Warburton, but IMDB has that with a 2014 release date.

The chance to work with Boyle should entice virtually any actor to clear out their schedule. He recently coached James Franco to an Oscar nomination for 127 Hours, and the idea of him directing what’s sure to be a kinetic bank heist flick has our pulse racing. Here’s to hoping Firth and Johansson sign on to Trance, but until then, we can look forward to watching them in the equally-excellent-looking Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and We Bought a Zoo, respectively, when they open later this year.

Colin Farrell & Anton Yelchin: 'Fright Night' UK Posters!

Colin Farrell & Anton Yelchin: 'Fright Night' UK Posters!
Colin Farrell is one sexy vampire in this newly released UK poster for his upcoming film, Fright Night.
The 35-year-old Irish actor stars opposite David Tennant, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Anton Yelchin, Toni Collette, and Dave Franco in the remake of the 1985 film.
“It’s a cult classic. That movie would not work today,” Dave told MTV last year of the original film. “[The new film is] obviously the same concept, but a lot has changed to make everything make sense now. For example, my character wasn’t even in the original, so they’ve changed a lot and added a lot of school elements, just let it build a little more.”
Fright Night, which is the story of a teen who suspects that his new neighbor is a vampire, will hit the big screen on August 19. http://justjared.buzznet.com/2011/07/05/colin-farrell-anton-yelchin-fright-night-uk-posters/

New Gag Reel for BAD TEACHER

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: June 16th, 2011

I don’t know what to expect from Bad Teacher, but I have high hopes.  From the promotional material, Cameron Diaz appears to pull no punches in her performance as a foul-mouthed, amoral teacher.  That’s commendable, but Diaz is no sure thing as a comedic performer.  I’m in it for the supporting cast.  I don’t know that you can find a more affable duo than Jason Segel and Justin Timberlake.  I can’t claim familiarity with Lucy Punch’s work, but I like her weird energy as an eager fellow teacher in the brief clips we’ve seen.  And in the new international gag reel, it’s John Michael Higgins and Paul Bates that get the biggest laugh.
Directed by Jake Kasdan (Walk Hard), Bad Teacher opens on June 24.  Watch the gag reel after the break.  (Beware of NSFW language.)

Jason Reitman to Play Doctor to BURT WONDERSTONE Script Starring Steve Carell

by Bill Graham    Posted: June 16th, 2011

If you are going to have someone touch up your script, Oscar-nominated writer/director Jason Reitman (Up In The Air) isn’t a bad choice. While he is busy working on his next film, New Line has tapped Reitman to tweak the script for Burt Wonderstone starring Steve Carell. THR notes that Reitman has been hired for “several weeks’ worth of work,” though it’s unknown if it is just a touch up or complete overhaul. I guess it really comes down to what you think “several” means in this case, and how much time Reitman gives to the film. The film follows Carell, a traditional magician in Las Vegas that loses his partner and has to compete with a younger, hipper magician. Darren Aronofsky to Direct HOBGOBLIN Pilot For HBO

by Bill Graham    Posted: June 16th, 2011

While Darren Aronofsky may have backed out of The Wolverine in March and crushed many hearts and dreams, he might win some back with his first adventure into television. HBO’s Hobgoblin has been steadily picking up steam since the period drama written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Chabon (The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay) and his wife, Ayelet Waldman, first broke onto the scene. Why? Because it pits con men and magicians against Hitler and the Germans in World War II. Now Heat Vision says that the television series has picked up Aronofsky to direct the pilot. Hit the jump for some more background on the project and those involved. http://collider.com/darren-aronofsky-hobgoblin/96967/

New Teaser Trailer for DEXTER Season Six

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: June 16th, 2011

dexter-season-six-slice
Michael C. Hall is likely on the verge of his fourth Emmy nomination for Dexter when the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announces the 2011 noms on July 14.  He’s earned every one — and deserves a win one of these days — as a truly and consistently captivating presence on an uneven series.  The first promo for season six leaned heavily on footage from previous seasons.  The new teaser trailer offers just Hall in closeup, that intense gaze, and a droll voiceover (“I’m feeling like my old self again”).  And that’s all we need.
Dexter returns this fall on Showtime with Edward James Olmos and Mos Def joining the cast.  Watch the trailer after the jump. http://collider.com/dexter-season-6-trailer/96961/

New Posters for COWBOYS & ALIENS and WARRIOR

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: June 16th, 2011

cowboys-and-aliens-warrior-poster
Two new posters tonight for Warrior and Cowboys & Aliens, tailored to men as much as movie posters can be “for men.”   Four of cinema’s most masculine specimens, staring straight ahead next to or above no-nonsense titles — no smiles allowed, obviously.
Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford look cooler than I ever will as the poster boys for Cowboys & Aliens.  Other men in the Jon Favreau-directed film include Sam Rockwell, Paul Dano, Keith Carradine, and Walton Goggins.  There’s a woman billed in the top five (Olivia Wilde), but it’s okay because she’s superhot.  Cowboys & Aliens opens on July 29.
Meanwhile, Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton are busy looking ripped on the poster for Warrior.  Jennifer Morrison, Nick Nolte, and Noah Emmerich also star in the mixed martial arts drama.  Warrior opens on September 9.  Hit the jump for the posters and official synopses. http://collider.com/cowboys-and-aliens-poster-warrior-poster/96948/

***Doug Liman’s Space Heist Flick LUNA Gets a Greenlight ***US Trailer for THE GUARD ***Nominations for First Critics’ Choice Television Awards Include MODERN FAMILY, THE WALKING DEAD, GAME OF THRONES and More

Doug Liman’s Space Heist Flick LUNA Gets a Greenlight

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: June 6th, 2011

It appears that Bourne Identity director Doug Liman has settled on his next project. Paramount has finally greenlit the long-in-the-works sci-fi flick Luna as Liman’s follow up to last year’s Fair Game. The director has been trying to get Luna off the ground for awhile, most recently with Jake Gyllenhaal in 2007. While that iteration never took off, Liman started meeting with a number of actors for the film in March. Now, Variety reports that Paramount is putting the finishing touches on a deal that will fast-track the project.
The story centers on a group of renegade scientists who build a spaceship from scratch using spare parts in order to steal an energy source located on the moon, cause apparently that’s where we keep valuable things in the future. It’s like our lock box. Liman and John Hamburg (I Love You Man) co-wrote the script, which has gone through several rewrites. In addition to the previously mentioned Andrew Garfield, Liman has also met with Bradley Cooper and Chris Evans to talk about roles in the film. No offers have been made yet, but expect casting news shortly as the project moves towards production. http://collider.com/doug-liman-luna-bradley-cooper/94982/

US Trailer for THE GUARD

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: June 6th, 2011

Sony Pictures Classics has released the domestic trailer for John Michael McDonagh’s The Guard.  A couple weeks ago, we showed you the international trailer for the film and at the time I speculated that the US trailer would dial back the racial humor.  But it actually included more!  Hooray!  This new trailer does a good job of delivering laughs and hopefully it will entice people to check out this solid small flick that features a winning performance from Brendan Gleeson.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The Guard opens in limited release on July 29th. http://collider.com/the-guard-us-trailer/94969/

Nominations for First Critics’ Choice Television Awards Include MODERN FAMILY, THE WALKING DEAD, GAME OF THRONES and More

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: June 6th, 2011

You may know of the Broadcast Film Critics Association, but now there’s a new branch from that organization with The Broadcast Television Journalists Association, and they’ve just announced their nominations for the first Critics’ Choice Television Awards. Modern Family leads the pack with six nominations, while the dramatic side seems to be dominated by cable series including freshman series Boardwalk Empire, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and The Killing. Other veteran series like Friday Night Lights, Dexter and Mad Men get plenty of love too. And before fans get upset when they don’t see any respect paid to Breaking Bad, the show was ruled ineligible since the series’ fourth season doesn’t begin until July. On the comedy side of things, kudos to the critics for recognizing the greatness of Louie and Community, both two fantastic comedy series that need more praise.
Reelz Channel will broadcast the awards telecast on June 22nd at 8/7c and will repeat at 11/10c and several more times throughout the week. The live presentation of the awards themselves will stream on VH1.com on June 20th when the awards take place at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Check out the full list of nominees after the jump.

The first images from the action thriller The Courier have gone online.  Directed by Hany Abu-Assad (Paradise Now), the film stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a mob courier who descends into the criminal underworld to find a notorious crime boss who can’t be found.

A Bunch of New Images from THE TREE OF LIFE

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: May 11th, 2011 at 3:13 pm

Fox Searchlight has released a bunch of new images from Terrence Malick’s highly-anticipated The Tree of Life.  After years of waiting, audiences will finally get a look at the film when it premieres at the Cannes Film Festival.  However, for all of the Americans who are angry that they’re not attending Cannes (myself included), we won’t have to wait long.  The film is set to open in the U.S. on May 31st.
I’d like to tell you what the film is about, but even after reading the synopsis, I have no idea.  Something to do with faith and family and existence.  The film stars Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, and Sean Penn.  Hit the jump to check out the images along with the inscrutable synopsis.

Hilary Swank Joins Matthew McConaughey in THE DALLAS BUYER’S CLUB; Elizabeth Debicki Signs on for THE GREAT GATSBY

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: May 11th, 2011 at 3:15 pm

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this afternoon. First up, Hilary Swank is set to join Matthew McConaughey in The Dallas Buyer’s Club. Directed by Jean Marc Vallee (The Young Victoria), the film s based on the true story of Ron Woodroof, a heterosexual man who was diagnosed with AIDS in 1986.  Given only a few months to live, Woodroof began to smuggle alternative and illegal treatments into the US and into the hands of other AIDS patients. THR’s report on the matter doesn’t specify what role Swank will be playing. The film is currently being shopped to buyers at Cannes.
Additionally, director Baz Lurhmann continues to fill out his cast for The Great Gatsby as Deadline reports that Australian newcomer Elizabeth Debicki is set to play Jordan Baker in the adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel. Leonardo DiCaprio will take on the role of Gatsby, Tobey Maguire is set as narrator Nick Carraway, Carey Mulligan will portray Daisy and Isla Fischer is in talks to play Myrtle Wilson. Ben Affleck was offered the role of Tom Buchanan, but was forced to turn it down due to scheduling conflicts. The film, which may or may not be shot in 3D, is set to start filming later this year in Australia. Hit the jump for a synopsis of The Great Gatsby.

Mos Def Joins Season Six of DEXTER

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: May 11th, 2011 at 3:20 pm

We just recently learned that Colin Hanks would have a major character arc appearing in all 12 episodes on the forthcoming sixth season of Showtime’s serial killer drama series Dexter, and now another name has surfaced for a major role. THR reports rapper turned actor Mos Def (Be Kind Rewind) will also have a multi-episode arc on the hit series. Production will begin in June with Mos Def playing a hardened ex-con who claims to have found religion yet seems to continually find himself surrounded by violence. Apparently Dexter will actually reveal the truth behind who this man really is behind the front. Meanwhile, the report also reveals Hanks’ character will be a man name Travis, the main nemesis of the sixth season and a highly intelligent ancient artifacts expert who is linked to a series of grisly murders in Miami. Sound good?

Three clips from writer/director Lynne Ramsay’s We Need to Talk About Kevin are now available online. Starring Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, and Ezra Miller, the film centers around a mother and father (Swinton & Reilly) whose son is responsible for a high-school massacre. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Lionel Shriver and the clips on display here have an eerie aura that stick with me as I type.
Hit the jump to check out the clips. We Need to Talk About Kevin is currently slated for a September 2 release in the UK. Stateside release details may very well be forthcoming following the film’s debut at the Cannes Film Festival which runs from May 11-22.

Colin Hanks Joins Season Six of DEXTER

by Ethan Anderton   Posted: May 9th, 2011

Years and years ago we simply would’ve known him as Tom Hanks son, but thankfully Colin Hanks has worked hard to create quite a career for himself. Aside from appearing in films like Orange County and King Kong, the younger Hanks has also had quite an impressive career on TV in shows like RoswellMad Men and most recently The Good Guys (even though the series was canceled). Now Hanks is keeping his activity on the small screen alive as TV Line reports the actor will have a major character arc in the forthcoming sixth season of Dexter, which just had its first promo show up online recently as well. Apparently details on his character are being kept underwraps but speculation is already rampant that he’ll end up being this season’s bad guy. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.

Darren Aronofsky May Next Direct Sci-Fi Film HUMAN NATURE Starring George Clooney

by Adam Chitwood  Posted: May 9th, 2011

Just over a month ago, director Darren Aronofsky dropped out of The Wolverine at the last minute. The project, which was set to start filming in March, was left in a state of limbo without a director and with their shooting location of Japan ravaged by a giant earthquake. Now, it looks like Aronofsky is closing in on his next directorial effort following last year’s critical lauded Black Swan.
Vulture reports that Aronofsky is eyeing the sci-fi film Human Nature. The spec script by Jeff Welch, which has been around for 15 years, centers on “man who is cryogenically frozen and wakes up years later to a world in which humans have become pets of another species.” George Clooney is attaching himself to star, with producer Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend) currently budgeting the flick. If everything works out, this is expected to be the director’s next project. Aronofsky, Clooney and sci-fi? Count me in.

Focus Features Acquires SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD Starring Steve Carell

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: May 9th, 2011

It looks like Focus Features has nabbed the U.S. rights to the comedic romance Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Written and directed by Lorene Scafaria (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist), the film stars Steve Carell and Keira Knightley and centers on the events surrounding an asteroid spiraling towards Earth, threatening to end all life. Carell plays a man whose wife leaves him as a result of the whole “the world is ending” news, and decides to seek out his high school sweetheart. Knightley stars as Carell’s neighbor who decides to accompany him on his journey.
We previously reported that Adam Brody, Rob Corddry and William Peterson are in talks to join the film as well. THR reports that Focus will handle U.S. distribution on the Indian Paintbrush/Mandate Pictures co-production. Filming begins in Los Angeles this month. And on a side note, previous reports had the title as Seeking a Friend AT the End of the World, but today’s acquisition reports have the “at” replaced by “for.” So, I guess this might be considered a title change, however insignificant it may be.

First Promo for Season 6 of DEXTER

by Matt Goldberg  Posted: May 8th, 2011

It’s still a long way until fall, but Showtime has already started running promos for the sixth season of Dexter.  The promo doesn’t have any new footage and it provides more of a recap of previous seasons.  What’s interesting is what it chooses to recap: single antagonists.  Last season marked a departure for the show as it took the focus off Dexter learning a valuable lesson from a big bad and instead developed a strong relationship with a new, not-evil character.  However, judging solely by this new promo, it’s possible that season six will be a return to form for America’s favorite serial killer.
Hit the jump to check out the promo.  No official premiere date has been announced for season six, but with the exception of the first season, every season of Dexter has premiered at the end of September.

F. Gary Gray to Direct THE LAST DAYS OF AMERICAN CRIME Starring Sam Worthington

Back in November 2009, before Sam Worthington broke out with Avatar but after he had garnered some attention for Termination Salvation, he signed on to star in an adaptation of the comic book The Last Days of American Crime.  And the project has been silent until today.  Deadline is reporting that director F. Gary Gray (Law Abiding Citizen) will helm the project, which centers on a group of thieves who plan to pull off a heist before America launches a new mind-control technology that will erase the criminal impulse in all citizens.  Karl Gajdusek (Horizons) is rewriting the script.
While Worthington has a slew of projects at his disposal, Deadline reports that he’ll do American Crime as his follow up to the Clash of the Titans sequel.  Shooting is expected to begin in September. Hit the jump for the comic’s official synopsis.

Johnny Depp Says THE LONE RANGER Will Reinvent the Role of Tonto

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 9th, 2011

When it was reported that Johnny Depp would be playing Tonto in the adaptation of The Lone Ranger, some were left wondering why an actor of Depp’s stature would take the sidekick role.  The answer: he wouldn’t.  In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Depp expresses bewilderment that Tonto would take orders from The Lone Ranger:
“I remember watching [the 1949-1957 TV series in reruns] as a kid, with Jay Silverheels and Clayton Moore, and going: ‘Why is the f—ing Lone Ranger telling Tonto what to do?’”
Apparently Johnny Depp was a foul-mouthed kid.  Hit the jump for what he and director Gore Verbinski (Rango) are planning for the film adaptation.
