First Official Trailer for THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: May 31st, 2011 at 8:47 pm

Sony has released the first official trailer for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, following a (purportedly) leaked red-band trailer that hit the web over the weekend. David Fincher directs this adaptation of the popular book by Stieg Larsson. Rooney Mara stars as Lisbeth Salander, the young heroine who investigates the Vanger family with journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig). Stellan Skarsgård, Robin Wright, Christopher Plummer, and Joley Richardson also star. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens December 21. Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner Join James Gray’s LOW LIFE

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: May 31st, 2011

Writer/director James Gray (We Own the Night) is currently putting together the cast for his next film, Low Life. Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix are set to star, with Jeremy Renner in negotiations to join the film as well, presumably because he wasn’t too busy already. Deadline reports that the story centers on a woman (Cotillard) who immigrates to America from Poland. During her journey to Ellis Island, she is forced to trade sexual favors for medicine and food to help her ailing sister, then once she arrives in America she falls victim to “a sleazebag” (Phoenix) who advises her to become a prostitute.
Renner is in talks to play Phoenix’s cousin, a charming magician who falls for Cotillard’s character. Filming is poised to begin next year. This marks a comeback of sorts for Phoenix following his sabbatical as a hobo, and it will be his fourth collaboration with Gray. He’s also set to star in Paul Thomas Anderson’s untitled religious drama. Cotillard is gearing up to shoot The Dark Knight Rises, and Renner is currently filming The Avengers before he moves on to The Bourne Legacy later this summer.

Jesse Eisenberg May Reunite with Noah Baumbach for WHILE WE’RE YOUNG; Naomi Watts May Co-Star

by Phil Brown    Posted: May 31st, 2011

Jesse Eisenberg’s ascension to unlikely geeky movie star was a gradual one that required overtaking Michael Cera’s crown as the king of awkward 20somethings. Though he stood out as a teen in small films like 2002’s Rodger Dodger, the film that put Eisenberg on the map for most people was Noah Baumbach’s acidic divorce comedy The Squid And The Whale. Now famous and Oscar nominated, it looks like Jesse might be reuniting with Baumbach on the upcoming While We’re Young. Details on the film are pretty scarce at this early stage, but a few other interesting casting choices are already in place and the tone should be consistent with Baumbach’s previous films that place complicated personalities into difficult situations to watch them squirm and reveal who they truly are. As he proved by playing Mark Zuckerberg, Eisenberg certainly knows his way around making a character empathetic without ignoring his inherent arrogance and that’s exactly what Baumbach needs from his actors. Hit the jump for more details on the upcoming flick. http://collider.com/jesse-eisenberg-naomi-watts-while-were-young/93839/

Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons, and David Warshofsky Join Paul Thomas Anderson’s Religious Drama

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 31st, 2011

Now that the lead roles in Paul Thomas Anderson’ untitled religious drama have been filled by Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix, it looks like the supporting cast is starting to fill out.  As we previously reported, the film centers on the charismatic figure of Lancaster Dodd (Hoffman) who forms his own religion after witnessing the horrors of World War II.  His right hand man is an alcoholic drifter (Phoenix) who eventually begins to question his mentor’s beliefs.  Earlier drafts heavily implied that the movie was based on the history of Scientology, but that subtext may have been reduced in more recent versions of the script.
Variety reports that Laura Dern (Everything Must Go), Jesse Plemons (Friday Night Lights), and David Warshofsky (There Will Be Blood) have joined the film.  Plemons will play Dodd’s son, and Warshofsky will play a detective.  No word yet on who Dern will play, but I like all three of these actors and Anderson has always excelled at putting together a strong cast.  Plemons will next be seen in Peter Berg’s Battleship while Warshofsky was recently cast in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln. http://collider.com/paul-thomas-anderson-religious-drama-laura-dern-jesse-plemons/93831/

by Matt Goldberg Posted: April 19th, 2011
Warner Bros. has sent out a press release revealing who Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play in The Dark Knight Rises. Rumors that Cotillard and Gordon-Levitt would play Talia al Ghul and Alberto Falcone, respectively, have turned out to be false, or at least not as simple as a straight reveal. Cotillard will play “Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham.” As for Gordon-Levitt, he’s been cast as “John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon. Neither character has previously appeared in the comics.

Tim Roth to Return to Directing with Adaptation of TURNING STONES; Wants Sam Rockwell to Star
by Matt Goldberg Posted: April 19th, 2011
Tim Roth is looking to get back in the directing game with an adaptation of Marc Parent’s non-fiction book, Turning Stones: My Days and Nights with Children at Risk. Roth, who was abused as a child, sees the film as a companion piece to his 1999 directorial debut, The War Zone. Parent was a struggling actor in his twenties who joined an experimental social work unit that called upon him to project children from abusive parents. His work sometime required him to at times break up households and even have parents arrested.

Roth tells THR, “He was an incredible social worker – he saved tons of children from horrible situations.” Roth wants Sam Rockwell to play Parent even though Rockwell is twice Parent’s age when he started the job. The film currently has no producer, but Roth is already planning to shoot the film in digital in order to keep costs low and take “real control of the atmosphere surrounding the children.” Hit the jump for a synopsis of Turning Stones.

Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt "Dark Knight Rises" Roles Revealed

Posted: April 19th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Warner Bros has announced that "Inception" stars Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have officially joined the cast of Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises."

Cotillard will appear as Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father's philanthropic endeavors for Gotham. Gordon-Levitt will play John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon.

"When you collaborate with people as talented as Marion and Joe, it comes as no surprise that you would want to repeat the experience," said Nolan. "I immediately thought of them for the roles of Miranda and Blake, and I am looking forward to working with both of them again."

**Only Christopher Nolan Knows "The Dark Knight Rises" Ending **Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" Trailer **Gary Oldman Says Christopher Nolan May Return for "Batman 4"

Only Christopher Nolan Knows "The Dark Knight Rises" Ending
Posted: March 28th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

In an interview with AbsoluteRadio, Gary Oldman talked about the level of secrecy around the script for "The Dark Knight Rises" that Christopher Nolan has set up.

"To get into the production office, you have to have someone meet you and there are keys and various doors that lock," he explained. "The script you read in the production office, and there is no ending because [Nolan] tells you the ending so that it doesn't leak and get out, and people spoil it on the internet."

Oldman also mentioned that his character will have interaction with Bane, played by Tom Hardy. "I have quite a bit to do with Tom in this one," he said.

Gary Oldman Says Christopher Nolan May Return for "Batman 4"
Posted: March 28th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

DigitalSpy caught up with Gary Oldman at the Jameson Empire Awards and asked him to confirm that "The Dark Knight Rises" is the last Batman installment that Christopher Nolan will direct.

"Chris is always negotiating," said Oldman. "So when he says that [he won't come back], I don't know."

Nolan is known for playing games. After "Batman Begins," he pretended to be unsure about returning to the franchise for both "The Dark Knight" and "The Dark Knight Rises." He ended up getting his way every time and Warner Bros even funded "Inception" as a way to bring Nolan back for another Batman movie.

This time, however, he actually stated that "The Dark Knight Rises" will be his last. But he has yet to make that clear to the cast, because even Christian Bale isn't sure that Nolan is done with Batman. Otherwise, the actor wouldn't be promising to reprise his role as many times as Nolan needs him.

Marion Cotillard to Play Talia al Ghul; Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Play Roman Sionis in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES [UPDATED]

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 16th, 2011

We reported in the past weeks that Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were in talks to join The Dark Knight Rises.  Warner Bros. has now sent out a press release announcing that both have joined the film and that Cotillard will play Talia al Ghul while Gordon-Levitt will play the gangster Roman Sionis (aka Black Mask).  That puts four potential villains against Batman with Anne Hathaway cast as Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Tom Hardy as Bane.  Of course, we don’t know how all of these villains will interact with each other and how much bearing they’ll have on the story, but I have to assume that you don’t get popular actors this caliber for bit parts.
Hit the jump for the full press release.  The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20, 2012. [Update: This may be fake.  In my rush to report Batman news that was forwarded to me, I didn't think to check the e-mail address it originated from: "warnerbrospicturesmedia@hotmail.com".  Hit the jump for my sloppy journalism! Update 2: Definitely fake:  The folks on the Nolan Fans message boards debunked the story.  Update 3: Here's an explanation of why we're leaving this story up. ]

New Poster for SCREAM 4

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 16th, 2011

After already releasing two bland posters, Dimension is taking another run at their Scream 4 marketing by high-lighting Ghostface and his killer chin.  If the whole movie has Ghostface running around chin-stabbing his victims, I will declare Scream 4 as the best movie in the franchise.  Anything less will be a disappointment.
Hit the jump to check out the poster.  Directed by Wes Craven, Scream 4 stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox Arquette, Emma Roberts, Rory Culkin, and Hayden Panettiere.  The film opens April 15th.

Rowan Joffe to Adapt Non-fiction Novel AGENT ZIGZAG for Director Mike Newell

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 16th, 2011

Writer-director Rowan Joffe (Brighton Rock) will pen the adaptation of the non-fiction novel Agent Zigzag for director Mike Newell (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time)  Per Deadline, “Agent Zigzag tells the true story of Eddie Chapman, a suave thief/seducer who became a double agent during WWII working for both Germany and Britain.”  I love that “seducer” is on the same job title as “thief” and “double-agent”.  I hope Mr. Zigzag put that on his resume.
In addition to Brighton Rock, Joffe also wrote the screenplay for The American and 28 Weeks Later.  In September, we reported that he has been hired to adapt Steve Watson’s debut novel Before I Go to Sleep. Last week, Newell signed on to direct a new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

Michel Gondry to Adapt Philip K. Dick’s UBIK

by Talia Soghomonian    Posted: February 16th, 2011

The Green Hornet director Michel Gondry’s next movie will be an adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s 1966 science fiction novel, Ubik. The screenplay will remain loyal to Dick’s original text.
This will be the second attempt by a French filmmaker to adapt Dick’s famed work. In 1974, Jean-Pierre Gorin commissioned the writer to adapt his own novel to a screenplay. The movie never got made but Dick’s labor didn’t go entirely to waste – it was instead published as Ubik: The Screenplay.
Highly respected in France, Philip K. Dick is perhaps one of the most popular American sci-fi writers in the world – and Hollywood. Hit the jump to find out which classic movies were inspired by his works.

A couple of casting stories for you today. Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights) and Harry Connick Jr. will headline the holiday family film When Angels Sing. The film will be directed by Tim McCanlies (Secondhand Lions), with a script by Lou Berney adapted from the novel of the same name by Turk Pipkin (Best. Name. Ever.). Variety reports that Kris Kristofferson, Chandler Canterbury, Willie Nelson, Fionnula Flanagan, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson and Lyle Lovett round out the Texas country music-themed cast.
Gael Garcia Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries) will star in the drama documentary Who is Dayani Cristal?. The documentary recently started filming and explores the immigration debate sparked by the discovery of an unidentified body found on the US/Mexico border with a tattoo that reads “Dayani Cristal” as the only identifying mark. Variety reports that the film is being produced by Pulse Films and Bernal’s own company Canana.

Has Marion Cotillard Been Cast in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES?

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 13th, 2011

File this under rumor for now, but Marion Cotillard may be joining the cast of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises after all. Le Figaro, France’s oldest and second largest newspaper, is reporting that Cotillard has signed on to join Nolan’s third Batman film. This is quite surprising news, given that just last month Cotillard announced she was pregnant, seemingly taking her out of the running for any role in Dark Knight Rises. However, the actress is due in May, and with the film shooting from May until November, there could be ample time for her to recover and appear in the film after all. The report is in French, but Batman News (who brought the story to our attention) translated the article as follows:
“The actress, who is expecting a child in the spring with Guillaume Canet, will be scarce this year. She’ll do a single film and her choice fell on Batman 3.”
The newspaper appears to be legit, and not simply a tabloid. There may, in fact, be some truth to this. Cotillard turned in a brilliant performance in Nolan’s Inception, and one would assume that she’d be eager to work with him again. Could Talia al Ghul be in the film after all? Nothing’s been officially confirmed, and this could very well turn out to simply be a rumor, but it sure would be fantastic if it turns out to be true. The Dark Knight Rises is slated for a July 20th, 2012 release.
