Aaron Sorkin and John Krasinski Developing HBO Miniseries LIFE AT THE MARMONT

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: June 23rd, 2011

He’s already got a new drama series at HBO with More as This Story Develops on the way, but Aaron Sorkin is working on yet another project at the cable network now. THR reports The Social Network scribe and The Office star John Krasinski are developing a new miniseries at HBO called Life at the Marmont, based on the book of the same name by the infamous hotel owners Raymond R. Sarlot and Fred Basten. The landmark Chateau Marmont at the center of Hollywood has long been a popular location always drawing in the biggest names in film, television, music and literature. Apparently the series, which Krasinski which also have a role in, will have a series of interconnected stories of several different hotel guests over several generations. I’m always interested in projects Krasinski takes on outside of The Office, and with Sorkin involved, this is yet another promising piece of entertainment from HBO.
For more on the project, hit the jump to check out a synopsis of the book.  http://collider.com/aaron-sorkin-life-at-the-marmont-john-krasinski/98376/

James McAvoy to Replace Michael Fassbender in Danny Boyle’s TRANCE

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 23rd, 2011

It looks like Professor X is taking over a job originally set for Magneto. Variety reports that James McAvoy is in early discussions to join Danny Boyle’s Trance in a role for which Michael Fassbender was previously in talks. The film is a remake of Joe Ahearne’s 2003 TV movie of the same name and centers on an art heist gone wrong. The mastermind of the heist suffers a blow to the head during the operation, and subsequently suffers from amnesia. When his team questions the validity of his claims, and given that he’s the only one who knows where the painting is hidden, a female hypnotist is hired to get into his brain.
Boyle plans to start production in September, and after filming wraps he will immediately move on to directing the opening ceremony for London’s 2012 Summer Olympics. After the Olympics conclude in August, he’ll return to Trance to begin post-production, with a March 2013 release date being eyed. So all-in-all, Boyle has a very busy year coming up. While Fassbender’s a fantastic actor and it would’ve been nice to see him team up with Boyle, McAvoy is no slouch himself, so the casting change doesn’t seem too drastic.

Julia Ormond in Talks to Play Superman’s Mom in MAN OF STEEL

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 23rd, 2011

Director Zack Snyder continues to fill out the cast for Man of Steel, and it looks like he’s found Superman’s mom. Deadline reports that Julia Ormond is in talks to star as Superman’s Kryptonian mother Lara Lor-Van, opposite Russell Crowe who was recently cast as father Jor-El. Their counterparts, Clark Kent’s adoptive Earth parents, will be played by Kevin Costner and Diane Lane.
Henry Cavill is set to play the titular Man of Steel, with Amy Adams poised to play Lois Lane and, in an inspired bit of casting, Michael Shannon will be taking on the role of General Zod. Antje Traue will play villain/Zod’s partner Faora. Details on David Goyer’s script are mum, but production is set to get underway next month in Vancouver. Produced by Christopher Nolan, Man of Steel is currently eying a holiday 2012 release.

David O. Russell Testing Actresses for THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK Including Rachel McAdams and Olivia Wilde

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: June 23rd, 2011

Director David O. Russell is readying his follow-up to last year’s The Fighter, and he’s begun searching for his lead actress. Russell will next tackle an adaptation of The Silver Linings Playbook, which already has Mark Wahlberg set to star as a former high school history teacher who has just been released from a mental institution and plans on reconciling with his estranged wife.
Now Risky Business reports that Russell will be testing a number of actresses throughout the weekend to find his leading lady. Those meeting with Russell include: Elizabeth Banks, Kirsten Dunst, Blake Lively, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, Andrea Riseborough and Olivia Wilde. Jennifer Lawrence is also mentioned, but her status is unclear. Filming is set to start in August. Angelina Jolie had recently been mentioned as a possibility as well, but she’s not included in this report. Exclusive: Jason Segel Talks BAD TEACHER, THE MUPPETS, THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT, JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME and More

by Christina Radish    Posted: June 23rd, 2011

Jason Segel is such a charming, funny and genuinely nice guy that it’s easy to like him, as a person and as an actor. The fact that he has the talent to back all that up makes it impossible not to be a fan. In the new raunchy comedy Bad Teacher, starring Cameron Diaz as the inappropriately foul-mouthed and ruthless middle school teacher Elizabeth Halsey, Segel plays happy-go-lucky gym teacher Russell Gettis. Unfazed by rejection, he keeps flirting with and pursuing Elizabeth, even though she has told him that it’s never going to happen because he’s just not rich enough for her.
At the film’s press day, Jason Segel spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview, in which he talked about working non-stop while juggling films with his television series How I Met Your Mother, his relationship with Rush since shooting I Love You, Man, how much fun he had working opposite Cameron Diaz for Bad Teacher, and the tremendous respect he has for Justin Timberlake. He also talked about what attracted him to Jeff Who Lives at Home (he’s seen the film and says it’s fantastic), The Muppets being a dream project, how great the Freaks & Geeks / Undeclared reunion was at PaleyFest earlier this year, how much he’s been enjoying shooting The Five-Year Engagement with Nic Stoller, and that he’d really like to eat a Reuben, once he’s done playing a leading man for that film. Matthew Goode in Talks to Join Nicole Kidman in STOKER

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 8th, 2011

Matthew Goode (Watchmen) is in talks to land the male lead in director Chan-wook Park’s (Oldboy) drama Stoker. Already starring Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska, the project was penned by actor Wentworth Miller (Prison Break) and centers on a young girl (Wasikowska) who encounters her mysterious uncle while mourning her father’s death. Variety reports that Goode’s negotiations are for the role of said “mysterious uncle,” a part previously courted by the likes of Colin Firth, James Franco, Michael Fassbender, and Joel Edgerton. Stoker is housed at Fox Searchlight and will mark the English-language debut for Chan-wook Park. Tony and Ridley Scott will produce the pic under their Scott Free moniker. As for Goode, “Ozymandias” himself can next be seen in the “romantic dramady” Burning Man from director Jonathan Teplitzky. http://collider.com/matthew-goode-stoker/95489/

International Trailer and Two New Images from THE HELP

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 8th, 2011

The international trailer for writer/director Tate Taylor’s The Help is now available online. While the first half of the cut is very similar to the trailer released back in April the last minute devotes more time to highlighting the interview process that Emma Stone’s character takes on while writing about the lives of African-American maids in Jackson, Mississippi during the civil rights movement. While I consider Stone a great young talent, I’m mostly looking forward to checking out The Help because it looks to be genuinely interested in showcasing a segment of the African-American plight during a tumultuous time in American history as opposed to simply pointing out how helpful white people can be to those poor, helpless black folk (I’m looking at you, The Blind Side). Here’s to hoping that turns out to be the case.
In addition to Stone, The Help also stars Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jessica Chastain, Sissy Spacek, and Octavia Spencer. The film hits theaters later this summer on August 12th. Hit the jump to check out both the trailer and a couple of new images from the pic http://collider.com/the-help-movie-trailer-images/95372/

John Krasinski to Star in Matt Damon’s Directorial Debut

by Phil Brown    Posted: June 8th, 2011

Never one to be outdone by his Good Will Hunting buddy Ben Affleck, Matt Damon will soon follow that old actor’s cliché and admit that all he ever really wanted to do was direct. Damon has been considering stepping into a director’s chair for a while now, initially planning to cut his teeth on the long discussed baseball wife-swap movie The Trade, which also would have featured himself and Affleck in the lead roles. However, that movie is now on hold due to undetermined legal troubles and Damon plans to move on to Father Daughter Time: A Tale of Armed Robbery and Eskimo Kisses. The wheels are already in motion on the project, with a rough start date in place for next year with John Krasinski attached to star. Hit the jump for further details on Damon’s directorial debut. http://collider.com/matt-damon-john-krasinski-father-daughter-time/95377/

Ginnifer Goodwin and John Krasinski Interview SOMETHING BORROWED

by Christina Radish    Posted: May 4th, 2011

john-krasinski-ginnifer-goodwin-slice
In the romantic dramedy Something Borrowed, actress Ginnifer Goodwin plays Rachel, a talented attorney at a top New York law firm. She is a loyal friend who is generous, much to her own detriment, when it comes to her best friend Darcy (Kate Hudson). When Rachel unexpectedly reveals to Darcy’s fiancé, Dex (Colin Egglesfield), that she’s had a crush on him since their time in law school, one thing leads to another and Rachel finds herself caught between her life-long friendship with Darcy, and the love of her life.
At the press day, Ginnifer Goodwin and her co-star John Krasinski, who often is the voice of reason in the film, talked about the challenge of finding sympathy for characters doing very unlikeable things, why some friendships just aren’t meant to be, what songs they danced to in front of the mirror when they were kids, and the difference between exploring a character for film and for television. John also talked about his role in The Muppets, and Ginnifer talked about her ABC pilot Once Upon a Time, in which she plays Snow White. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Bruce Willis to Reteam with 50 Cent for FIRE WITH FIRE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 4th, 2011

Hey, remember that trailer we showed you in March for the awful-looking Bruce Willis/50 Cent thriller Setup?  It may have looked laughably-bad to all of us, but apparently Willis and Fiddy had a fun time working together because they’re re-teaming for another indie crime flick.  Variety reports that Willis and 50 Cent (I was going to simply say “actors”, but then I realized that would only be half-true) along with Josh Duhamel will star in Fire with Fire.  The story “centers on a fireman in the witness protection program. When he’s threatened by the man he plans to testify against, he takes matters into his own hands to save the love of his life.”  There’s no justice quite like fireman justice.  Just ask Howie Long.  David Barrett will direct from a script by Tom Conner.
Voltage Films will be selling the rights to the film at Cannes next week.  Filming is expected to begin on June 27th with an almost-inevitable-direct-to-DVD release date to be announced at a later date.

New Trailer for GREEN LANTERN Starring Ryan Reynolds

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 4th, 2011

green-lantern-movie-image-explosion-slice-01
Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for the superhero tentpole Green Lantern.  Ryan Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan, the first human ever selected for the Green Lantern Corps: “A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers.”  The movie also stars Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Angela Bassett, and Tim Robbins.  Martin Campbell (Edge of Darkness) directed the comic book adaptation.
This trailer offers everything you’ve been waiting to see: character moments for Hector Hammond (Sarsgaard), Carol Ferris (Lively), Kilowog (voiced by Michael Clarke Duncan), and first looks at Amanda Walker (Bassett) and the Guardians of the Universe.  I’ll admit that the CG on the Guardians looks kind of crappy, but there’s so much potentially great stuff in this trailer that I’m willing to suspend by disbelief a little further.  I have no idea if this film is going to work, but I admire its ambition. Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Green Lantern opens in 3D on June 17.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

Malin Akerman Joins ROCK OF AGES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 4th, 2011

Adam Shankman’s musical Rock of Ages has been searching for months to find its “Constance”, the journalist who sleeps with decadent rock star Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) even though she’s supposed to be writing an expose about him.  The project courted Anne Hathaway and Amy Adams, but both actresses passed on the film after they were offered roles in superhero movies (Hathaway for The Dark Knight Rises and Adams for Man of Steel).  Today, Rock of Ages finally has its Constance as Deadline reports that Malin Akerman will take the role.  In addition to Tom Cruise, Akerman will be joining Alec Baldwin, Mary J. Blige, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Diego Boneta, Julianne Hough, Bryan Cranston, and Catherine Zeta Jones.
Rock of Ages is the latest film to fall into Akerman’s packed schedule.  She’s currently shooting Medallion with Nicolas Cage, she replaced Lindsay Lohan in Inferno: The Linda Lovelace Story, she’s co-starring in the romantic comedy The Giant Mechanical Man, and she’s starring opposite Ethan Hawke in the spy thriller The Numbers Station.   Akerman can currently be seen in theaters co-starring in the war drama The Bang Bang Club and she has two more films coming out later this year: the indie crime thriller Criminal Empire for Dummy’s and the David Wain comedy WanderlustRock of Ages is due out June 1, 2012.

Danny Boyle to Direct TRANCE before the 2012 Summer Olympics

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 4th, 2011

Danny Boyle will be directing the opening ceremony for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, but that doesn’t mean there’s no time to shoot another movie.  It’s just something that can be squeezed in, like a trip to the grocery store or picking up stamps.  Deadline reports that Boyle will shoot Trance, which is about “an art heist gone wrong” and has the same “dark, sexy, hard-edged tone” of Boyle’s early films Shallow Grave and Trainspotting.  Boyle plans to shoot the film this September in London, but once he’s finished, he’s going to put Trance on the shelf.  Then he’ll switch gears, turn his attention to the Olympics, and then in August 2012, he’ll pick the film up again with an eye towards releasing it in March 2013.
Producing partner Christian Colson (Slumdog Millionaire) is on board and the duo are in talks with Pathe and Fox Searchlights for funding and distribution.  The feature is budgeted in the mid-teens, which has worked out well for Boyle on his last two films.  Slumdog Millionaire cost $15 million and grossed $377 million worldwide while 127 Hours cost $18 million and raked in a modest but still profitable $57 million worldwide.

Trailer for MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 4th, 2011

Martha_Marcy_May_Marlene_movie_image_elizabeth_olson_slice_01
One of the best films I’ve seen so far this year is the haunting and emotionally complex drama Martha Marcy May Marlene.  Now Fox Searchlight has released a trailer for the flick and it does a good job of selling how the story jumps around in time and showing the fractured psyche of its protagonist (Elisabeth Olsen in a breakthrough performance).  I also love how it closes out with John Hawkes singing and giving you a hint of how disturbing he is in this film.  I honestly believe he’s headed towards another Oscar nomination for his work in this film.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer and click here to read my Sundance review.  Martha Marcy May Marlene will play at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.  It opens in the U.S. on October 7th.

John Krasinski, Olivia Thirlby, and Rosemarie DeWitt in Talks for NOBODY WALKS
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: April 19th, 2011
John Krasinski, Olivia Thirlby, and Rosemarie DeWitt are in negotiations to star in Nobody Walks. You are a keen individual, and guessed from the collection of idiosyncratic actors that Nobody Walks is an independent drama. You are correct. (Note: the judges also would have accepted “low-budget dramedy.”) According to Variety, the film depicts one week in the life of “a Los Angeles family who invite a young, charismatic artist into their home, only to find her disrupting their lives.” Director Ry Russo-Young (You Won’t Miss Me) co-wrote the script with rising star Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture). Production is slated for the end of May in Los Angeles.

Ben Affleck Will NOT Star in THE GREAT GATSBY
by Adam Chitwood Posted: April 19th, 2011
It looks like Ben Affleck ultimately will not be joining the cast of Baz Lurhmann’s The Great Gatsby. After working hard to try and fit the film into his schedule, the actor was forced to turn the offer down. Deadline reports that Affleck wasn’t able to commit to The Great Gatsby because filming conflicted with his next directorial project Argo. The actor was up for the role of Tom Buchanan, husband of Carey Mulligan’s Daisy. Leonardo DiCaprio is set as Gatsby himself, and Tobey Maguire will be taking on the role of narrator Nick Carraway. Isla Fischer is also now in talks to play Myrtle Wilson.

Argo, which is being produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov (The American), revolves around the Iran hostage crisis in 1979. Production on The Great Gatsby is set to begin in August in Sydney. No word on who the frontrunner to take on Tom Buchanan is now, but apparently Lurhmann is looking to add some more Australian names to his cast to help with production costs. Hit the jump for a synopsis of The Great Gatsby.

Trailer for TERRI Starring John C. Reilly and Jacob Wysocki
by Matt Goldberg Posted: April 19th, 2011
The trailer for the indie comedy Terri has gone online. The film is a coming-of-age tale about an overweight and unpopular teen who dresses in pajamas but strikes up an unlikely friendship with his school’s vice principal (John C. Reilly). Terri played at this year’s Sundance Film Festival as well as SXSW and the reaction was positive but unenthusiastic. The general consensus seems to be that it’s enjoyable but slight and after seeing the trailer, I can understand that criticism. However, I’m a big enough fan of Reilly and co-star Creed Bratton (who is the secret weapon of NBC’s The Office) to check out the film when it plays as the opening night feature at this year’s Atlanta Film Festival.

International Trailer for BRIDESMAIDS
by Phil Brown Posted: April 19th, 2011
Anyone who enjoys watching girls behaving badly (no, not in that way) has a reason to rejoice on this fine afternoon because Universal has seen fit to release an international trailer for the upcoming Kristen Wiig romp Bridesmaids. Not much is revealed than hasn’t already been seen in the previous trailer, but a few extra chuckles are to be had in this AC/DC scored montage (in particular, Mad Men fans will enjoy a little taste of Jon Hamm sleaziness). The film has been getting some pretty positive buzz so far at preview screenings and SXSW and could be a modest early summer comedy hit provided that both the R-rated sex comedy crowd and the chick-flick crowd can join forces to support it. How much overlap exists between the two groups remains to be seen, but this is the movie to bring em; together if anything can.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film was directed by Freaks And Geeks creator Paul Feig and also features Wiig’s former SNL partner in crime Maya Rudolph, as well as Rose Byrne, Matt Lucas (Little Britain), Chris O’Dowd (The IT Crowd), and Melissa McCarthy (who frankly looks like she might steal the movie away from her co-stars). The film opens May 13th.

John Krasinski Talks Steve Carell's 'Office' Departure

John Krasinski covers Parade magazine’s March 13 issue!
Here’s what the 31-year-old Office star had to share:
On Jim and Pam’s wedding: “Having the family I’ve been with for years out in the audience for the fake wedding was, believe it or not, a really emotional thing. The reactions when we kissed, when we said ‘I do,’ were all so genuine. I almost think a company should be started that will exact a fake wedding for you just to get your jitters out.”
On his real life marriage to Emily Blunt: “I had always heard, ‘Never date an actress - it’s too competitive, too dramatic. But we’re so lucky to have each other. She understands the stress level involved, the amount of work. That’s completely priceless. For many reasons, Emily is perfect for me.”
On Steve Carell’s departure from The Office: “It’s an insanely special relationship we have with each other on the show, and Steve’s leaving is the first time we’ve been snapped out of it and had to think about how much we all rely on each other. No one can replace him. That goes for him as an actor, because no one has the sense of humor he does, but also there’s no person who has his incredible positivity and professionalism, and just a really good heart. So we’re losing a friend first and foremost.”
On Will Ferrell guest starring on the show: “I am the biggest fan of Will’s and always have been. Other than Steve [Carell], he’s probably the biggest star we’ve had on the show, and I think he’s the type of person who fits into that world. Yes, he’s Will Ferrell, but he’s so talented he can slide in as a normal person.”

Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki attend PaleyFest 2011’s panel honoring their show, Supernatural, on Sunday (March 13) at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, Calif.
Jensen brought wife Danneel Harris, while Jared hit the red carpet with his wife, Genevieve Cortese, who previously appeared on the CW show.
Jensen, who directed the “Weekend at Bobby’s” episode earlier this season, said “he’d love to” go behind the camera again.
“As long as [Jared]’s not in it,” he joked, TV Line reports.

Lauren Graham Covers 'Health' March 2011

Lauren Graham Covers 'Health' March 2011
Lauren Graham is all smiles on the cover of Health magazine’s March 2011 issue, on newsstands Friday (February 18)!
Here’s what the 43-year-old Parenthood star had to share:
On which celeb inspires her the most: Sandra Bullock. She looks really great and not fake. And I think she has dignity and has handled her public life really well.”
On feeling body confident: “Well, part of my job is pretending. And I’ve honestly never led with my looks. I’ve always thought my strengths were I’m smart, and I have a good sense of humor. I definitely struggle with feeling confident…I always still feel like I’m in high school: ‘Did I wear the right thing? Do I look OK? Did I walk funny?’”
On what trend she’s not into: “I’m not a Facebook or Twitter person. I still write letters and send invitations on actual stationary.”
On the first show she’ll pick to watch off TiVo: “It’s a TiVo toss-up between real estate shows and Mad Men. I also love Glee. I’m a geek for a TV musical, too!”

***First Trailer for SOMETHING BORROWED Starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Kate Hudson, and Colin Egglesfield ***Director Gore Verbinski Talks LONE RANGER; Likens Johnny Depp as Tonto to a Crazy Sancho Panza

First Trailer for SOMETHING BORROWED Starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Kate Hudson, and Colin Egglesfield

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 17th, 2011

I love a good romantic comedy, and so harbored high hopes for Something Borrowed since the early stages of development.  I have heard good things about the Emily Giffin novel/source material, and generally believe Ginnifer Goodwin can do no wrong.  But Kate Hudson in a rom-com is enough to caution anyone familiar with her work over the last decade.
The good news: Hudson is meant to play an awful person, and even gets the biggest laughs in the new trailer despite the presence of John Krasinski.  (Well played, casting director Mandy Sherman.)  See for yourself after the jump.

Director Gore Verbinski Talks LONE RANGER; Likens Johnny Depp as Tonto to a Crazy Sancho Panza

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 17th, 2011

So far, Johnny Depp has been the public voice of the Lone Ranger adaptation, discussing the opportunity to salute Native American culture and his wish to see Brad Pitt or George Clooney in the title role.  But director Gore Verbinski has a movie to promote — the same one as Depp, actually.  The animated film Rango, which opens March 4.  And so we have access to Verbinski as he sets out on this high profile adaptation:
“It’s just at the primordial stage. We’re working on the screenplay, but if we can pull that off — find that story I want to tell — then it will be worth doing.”
Verbinski went on to discuss Depp’s role as Tonto and compared the storytelling to Don Quixote.  Read what he had to say after the jump.

***New Posters for SOMETHING BORROWED and A BETTER LIFE (Formerly THE GARDENER)

New Posters for SOMETHING BORROWED and A BETTER LIFE (Formerly THE GARDENER)

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 1st, 2011

We have new posters for a pair of films I’m really rooting for in 2011.  The first is Something Borrowed, an adaptation of the first in a series of novels from Emily Giffin.  Ginnifer Goodwin, Kate Hudson, Colin Egglesfield, and John Krasinski star.  Hudson’s name is a big red flag, but there are hints that Something Borrowed could be more than your average romantic comedy.
The second is A Better Life (formerly titled The Gardener), the latest from Chris Weitz.  For a brief minute, Weitz was the promising co-director behind the charming About a Boy before he was swallowed up by the big budget filmmaking of The Golden Compass and New MoonA Better Life scales things back down to the indie level: a gardener (Demian Bichir) and his son (Jose Julian) scour Los Angeles for a stolen truck vital to their livelihood in this tale inspired by The Bicycle Thief.  Hit the jump to view both posters.
Luke Greenfield (The Girl Next Door) directs Something Borrowed from a script by Jennie Snyder (90210).  Something Borrowed opens on May 6.  Click for high resolution.

As she waits to enter her 30th birthday party, Rachel White (Ginnifer Goodwin) can’t escape the feeling that her life has not turned out like she thought it would. Sure, she has a good job at a prestigious Manhattan law firm, but she works long hours and her boss is a tyrant.
She has her childhood best friend, the beautiful and vivacious Darcy (Kate Hudson), but seeing her flirt with her handsome fiancé is just another reminder that at the end of the party, like every other night, she’ll be going home alone. Except this time…she doesn’t. Rachel wakes up the following morning next to Dex (Colin Egglesfield), her law school study partner…and Darcy’s fiancé. Both of them are horrified. How could they let this happen?
They try to move on, but as the wedding approaches Rachel begins to realize that it wasn’t a mistake after all and maybe Darcy isn’t the friend she thought she was.
Now Rachel has to make a painful choice: her best friend or the love of her life?

A Better Life is due sometime in 2011 courtesy of Summit Entertainment.

Here’s the synopsis seen at the American Film Market:
Carlos Galindo (Demian Bichir), a simple, decent, 40-year-old Mexican man, doesn’t ask much from life – just to keep tending the yards of L.A.’s wealthy and to give his estranged son  Luis (Jose Julian) a better life than he had. But when a business opportunity that would have allowed him to take control of his destiny is stolen from under his nose, his life is thrown into chaos. Directed by Academy Award nominee Chris Weitz, A Better Life is an original, moving and, at times, heart-pounding drama that follows father and son as they scour L.A. in search of a stolen pickup truck that represents their only chance of a better life and of healing the growing riff between them.
When Galindo’s boss offers to sell him his pickup truck and gardening business, Galindo has no choice but to refuse – even though it will mean going back to begging for work on a street corner. He simply can’t afford it. But when his sister Anita (Dolores Heredia) comes through with a last-minute loan, Galindo suddenly finds himself with a shot at the American Dream,. Not for long, though. On the first day of his new life, while he is high in a palm tree pruning fronds, hew newly hired helper, Santiago (Carlos Linares), makes off with the pickup – and with it, Galindo’s shot at a better life for himself and Luis.
What follows is a colorful, often nail-biting odyssey as Galindo and Luis make their way across an urban landscape as full of surprises as it is diverse, piecing together clues as to the whereabouts of Santiago and the pickup. The stakes could not be higher: like the new green fronds on the palm trees Galindo prunes and so carefully leaves intact, Luis is extremely vulnerable – always in danger or falling into the gang-banger lifestyle that surrounds their East L.A. home. That’s something that Galindo will do anything to prevent.
Forever tied to the Twilight fanbase, Weitz earnestly pitched his new movie to the devoted fans via Cinematical:
“Look, let’s be honest: There’s not a single vampire, not a werewolf or star-crossed romance in sight. Jose is quite a heartthrob but just doesn’t have Jacob’s abs. Demian plays an amazing Dad but doesn’t have to deal with quite the same issues as Charlie Swan. But if a fan of Twilight came away from watching New Moon with a sense that that movie has been done well by me and my crew, they might be interested in seeing another film that deals with some pretty intense feelings and, frankly, packs a tremendous emotional wallop. I’ll put it this way: I bet that Bella would go see A Better of Life. I bet she’d make the drive out to Port Angeles. And I bet she’d like it.”
