Isabelle Fuhrman and Alexander Ludwig Round Out the Tributes in THE HUNGER GAMES Cast
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: May 11th, 2011 at 8:51 pm

The basic premise behind The Hunger Games is a fight to the death between 24 kids (ages 12-18) — two “tributes” selected from each of the 12 districts of Panem, the dictatorship of the future. Lionsgate has spent the last month steadily rolling out the young cast that will play the kids, saving two of the most important tributes for today’s final announcement. You can gauge their relative importance by their names — known not as “Tribute Boy” and “Tribute Girl,” but rather as Cato and Clove of District 2. Alexander Ludwig (Race to Witch Mountain) will play Cato, Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan) will play Clove. I can’t speak for Ludwig’s talent, but the Fuhrman casting is excellent. She wowed us all in Orphan in 2009, but screen credits since have been minimal (The Cleveland Show?). Fuhrman is perfect for Clove, who is great with a knife and, um… not very nice.
Virtually all of the principal roles are filled: Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta, Woody Harrelson as Haymitch, Liam Hemsworth as Gale, Wes Bentley as Seneca Crane, Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket, Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman, Willow Shields as Primrose, and Paula Malcomson as Mrs. Everdeen. Find a Cinna (perhaps Lenny Kravitz?) and a President Snow, and you’re pretty much set. Director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) ought to begin production soon to make the planned March 23, 2012 release date. Hit the jump for the official synopsis the full tribute casting rundown.

Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke, and Christopher Walken Join Colin Farrell in SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: May 11th, 2011 at 9:45 pm

Quick — before you read the headline, think of four male actors you’d like to see in a movie together.  Now, less than 2% of you named Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke, and Christopher Walken.  But 14% combined two or more of these actors, and an impressive 37% of your lists included at least one.  This bodes well for Seven Psychopaths, the black comedy which secured Farrell, Rockwell, Rourke, and Walken at the Cannes Film Festival today.  Per Variety, the story centers on “a screenwriter (Farrell) struggling for inspiration for his script, Seven Psychopaths, who gets drawn into the dog kidnapping schemes of his oddball friends (Rockwell and Walken).”  How can you not love a movie that casts Rockwell and Walken as “oddball friends”/dog kidnappers separated by 26 years in age?  Rourke will play a gangster who causes trouble when his dog goes missing.  (Given Rourke’s love of dogs and general flirtation with insanity, he may not know he is in Seven Psychopaths.)
The project reunites Farrell and In Bruges writer/director Martin McDonagh, not to mention In Bruges producers Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin, and Tessa Ross.  The ineffable Meghan Ellison (True Grit) is also on board as producer.

Mickey Rourke and Christopher Walken in "Seven Psychopaths" Comedy

Posted: May 12th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke and Christopher Walken will join Colin Farrell in the black comedy "Seven Psychopaths," which HanWay is selling at the Cannes Film Festival.

Story follows a screenwriter (Farrell) struggling for inspiration for his script, "Seven Psychopaths," who gets drawn into the dog kidnapping schemes of his oddball friends (Rockwell, Walken). Things take a turn for the worse when a gangster's (Rourke) mutt goes missing.

The new movie is directed and written by "In Bruges" helmer Martin McDonagh.

by Matt Goldberg Posted: April 19th, 2011
Warner Bros. has sent out a press release revealing who Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play in The Dark Knight Rises. Rumors that Cotillard and Gordon-Levitt would play Talia al Ghul and Alberto Falcone, respectively, have turned out to be false, or at least not as simple as a straight reveal. Cotillard will play “Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham.” As for Gordon-Levitt, he’s been cast as “John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon. Neither character has previously appeared in the comics.

Hit the jump for my thoughts on the casting along with the full press release. The film also stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine. The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20, 2012.

Tim Roth to Return to Directing with Adaptation of TURNING STONES; Wants Sam Rockwell to Star
by Matt Goldberg Posted: April 19th, 2011
Tim Roth is looking to get back in the directing game with an adaptation of Marc Parent’s non-fiction book, Turning Stones: My Days and Nights with Children at Risk. Roth, who was abused as a child, sees the film as a companion piece to his 1999 directorial debut, The War Zone. Parent was a struggling actor in his twenties who joined an experimental social work unit that called upon him to project children from abusive parents. His work sometime required him to at times break up households and even have parents arrested.

Roth tells THR, “He was an incredible social worker – he saved tons of children from horrible situations.” Roth wants Sam Rockwell to play Parent even though Rockwell is twice Parent’s age when he started the job. The film currently has no producer, but Roth is already planning to shoot the film in digital in order to keep costs low and take “real control of the atmosphere surrounding the children.” Hit the jump for a synopsis of Turning Stones.

Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt "Dark Knight Rises" Roles Revealed

Posted: April 19th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Warner Bros has announced that "Inception" stars Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have officially joined the cast of Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises."

Cotillard will appear as Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father's philanthropic endeavors for Gotham. Gordon-Levitt will play John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon.

"When you collaborate with people as talented as Marion and Joe, it comes as no surprise that you would want to repeat the experience," said Nolan. "I immediately thought of them for the roles of Miranda and Blake, and I am looking forward to working with both of them again."

***Joe Carnahan’s THE GREY Gets the Green Light; James Badge Dale, Dermot Mulroney, and More Join Cast ***First Images and Synopses for 30 MINUTES OR LESS and ANONYMOUS; New Image from BAD TEACHER ***Sam Rockwell Joins Andrew Dominik’s COGAN’S TRADE Starring Brad Pitt

Joe Carnahan’s THE GREY Gets the Green Light; James Badge Dale, Dermot Mulroney, and More Join Cast

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 5th, 2011

After the big-budget, dumb-fun fare of The A-Team, director Joe Carnahan is going back to gritty indie fare with The Grey.  The film centers on a group of oil-rig roughnecks who survive a plane crash.  Normally, that makes you one of the luckiest people on the planet.  Unfortunately for this group, their plane happens to crash right in the middle of a hunting zone of a rogue pack of wolves in the Alaskan tundra.  As we previously reported, Liam Neeson will lead the film, and according to Deadline, he’ll be joined by Dallas Roberts (Rubicon), James Badge Dale (Rubicon), Dermot Mulroney (Inhale),  Frank Grillo (My Soul to Take), Nonso Anozie (RocknRolla), and Joe Anderson (The Crazies).
The film now has a green light and production will begin next week.  Hit the jump for what Carnahan had to say about the film.
Carnahan said of filming in the bitter cold of Vancouver and the Northern British Columbia region:
“It gets to be 30 below, and when we went out the other day, I took off my hat to see how long I could last, and my skin was burning with frostbite in a little over a minute.  In a way, it’s great, because it beats the shit out of the cast and that suits the storyline.”
Carnahan also says that he enjoys the freedom of shooting an indie and not having to worry about making a set release date.  He added that The Grey is about one-fifth the budget of A-Team.
And as for the kind of film The Grey is looking to be, Carnahan says it’s in the vein of great man vs. nature movies like Deliverance and Touching the Void.  As a fan of not only The A-Team, but Carnahan’s previous films Narc and Smokin’ Aces, I can’t wait to see what he’ll deliver with The Grey.

First Images and Synopses for 30 MINUTES OR LESS and ANONYMOUS; New Image from BAD TEACHER

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 5th, 2011

Sony has released the first images and synopses for 30 Minutes or Less and Anonymous30 Minutes or Less is an action-comedy directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and stars Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride, Nick Swardson, and Aziz Ansari.  Anonymous is the new film from 2012 director Roland Emmerich and is noteworthy in that the plot won’t feature the destruction of famous landmarks.  The film is based on speculation that William Shakespeare did not write his own plays.
Sony has also released the synopsis plus a new image for the Cameron Diaz comedy Bad Teacher which also stars Justin Timberlake, Lucy Punch, and Jason Segel.  Hit the jump to check out the images and synopses for all three films.
BAD TEACHER (Opens June 17th)
bad-teacher-movie-image-cameron-diaz-jason-segel-justin-timberlake-01
Some teachers just don’t give an F. For example, there’s Elizabeth (Cameron Diaz).  She’s foul-mouthed, ruthless, and inappropriate.  She drinks, she gets high, and she can’t wait to marry her meal ticket and get out of her bogus day job.  When she’s dumped by her fiancé, she sets her plan in motion to win over a rich, handsome substitute (Justin Timberlake) – competing for his affections with an overly energetic colleague, Amy (Lucy Punch).  When Elizabeth also finds herself fighting off the advances of a sarcastic, irreverent gym teacher (Jason Segel), the consequences of her wild and outrageous schemes give her students, her coworkers, and even herself an education like no other.
30 MINUTES OR LESS (Opens August 12th)

In the action-comedy 30 Minutes or Less, Nick (Jesse Eisenberg) is a small town pizza delivery guy whose mundane life collides with the big plans of two wanna-be criminal masterminds (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson).  The volatile duo kidnaps Nick and forces him to rob a bank.  With mere hours to pull off the impossible task, Nick enlists the help of his ex-best friend, Chet (Aziz Ansari).  As the clock ticks, the two must deal with the police, hired assassins, flamethrowers, and their own tumultuous relationship.
ANONYMOUS (Opens September 30th)
anonymous-movie-image-rhys-ifans-01
Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds ranging from Mark Twain and Charles Dickens to Henry James and Sigmund Freud, namely:  who was the author of the plays credited to William Shakespeare?  Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature.  Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when cloak-and-dagger political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles hungry for the power of the throne were exposed in the most unlikely of places: the London stage.

Sam Rockwell Joins Andrew Dominik’s COGAN’S TRADE Starring Brad Pitt

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 5th, 2011

We previously reported that Sam Rockwell may be joining Andrew Dominik’s adaptation of the crime novel Cogan’s TradeDeadline is now confirming that Rockwell is on board and will join Brad Pitt in the film.  With Casey Affleck also rumored to be joining the project, it looks like Dominik is getting his Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Ford gang back together.  Someone should call up Jeremy Renner, Garret Dillahunt, Paul Schneider, and the rest of that film’s stellar cast to see if they want to get in on this action.
Hopefully, the other names rumored along with Rockwell will also come on board.  A movie directed by Dominik that starred Pitt, Rockwell, Affleck, as well as Javier Bardem, Mark Ruffalo, Bill Murray, Josh Brolin, and Zoe Saldana and has the plot of Cogan’s Trade would be at the top of my must-see list.  Then again, it’s already near the top with Pitt and Rockwell.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the book.
Here’s the synopsis for George V. Higgins’ Cogan’s Trade:
[Cogan's Trade] tracks Jackie Cogan’s career in a gangland version of law and order. For Cogan is an enforcer; and when the Mob’s rules get broken, he gets hired to ply his trade — murder. In the gritty, tough-talking pages of Higgins’s 1974 national best-seller, Cogan is called in when a high-stake card game under the protection of the Mob is heisted. Expertly, with a ruthless businessman’s efficiency, a shrewd sense of other people’s weaknesses, and a style as cold as his stare, Cogan moves with reliable precision to restore the status quo as ill-conceived capers and double-dealing shenanigans erupt into high-voltage violence. Trailer and Poster for KILL THE IRISHMAN Starring Ray Stevenson

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 9th, 2010

Anchor Bay has released a trailer and poster for their new crime thriller Kill the Irishman.  The film centers on real-life Irish mobster Danny Greene (played by Ray Stevenson) who decided to stop being a loan shark for the Italian mob and go into business for himself.  Not surprisingly, the mafia didn’t take too kindly to that career change and they tried to blow him up.  A lot.  There are about 14 explosions over the course of this two-and-a-half minute trailer.  However, the film does look like a nice showcase for Stevenson and Stevenson’s mustache.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster.  Kill the Irishman also stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Val Kilmer, and Christopher Walken.  It opens March 11, 2011.
Click over to Yahoo! Movies to see the trailer in HD.

Here’s the official synopsis for Kill the Irishman:
Over the summer of 1976, thirty-six bombs detonate in the heart of Cleveland while a turf war raged between Irish mobster Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson) and the Italian mafia.  Based on a true story, KILL THE IRISHMAN chronicles Greene’s heroic rise from a tough Cleveland neighborhood to become an enforcer in the local mob.  Turning the tables on loan shark Shondor Birns (Christopher Walken) and allying himself with gangster John Nardi (Vincent D’Onofrio), Greene stops taking orders from the mafia and pursues his own power. Surviving countless assassination attempts from the mob and killing off anyone who went after him in retaliation, Danny Greene’s infamous invincibility and notorious fearlessness eventually led to the collapse of mafia syndicates across the U.S. and also earned him the status of the man the mob couldn’t kill.
Written and directed by Jonathan Hensleigh and also starring Val Kilmer, Paul Sorvino and Linda Cardellini, KILL THE IRISHMAN is inspired by Rick Porello’s true crime account “To Kill The Irishman: The War That Crippled The Mafia.”

First Trailer for Shawn Levy’s REAL STEEL

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: December 9th, 2010

Hugh Jackman Real Steel movie image slice
The first trailer for Shawn Levy’s Real Steel has leaked onto the net and you can check it out after the jump.  Originally the trailer was going to premiere on ESPN tonight, but as is often the case, it leaked early.  As you might have just seen, I visited the editing room of Real Steel earlier this week and saw about ten minutes of the film and interviewed Levy.  I learned that none of the effects in the teaser are final, and the footage you’re about to watch only skims the surface in terms of story and what the movie is about.
I’ll be honest, I think the teaser is decent, but not a home-run.  I say this because after watching ten minutes of footage, there is a lot more to Real Steel than what’s in this teaser and I really think this film is going to surprise audiences when it gets released in October, 2011.  Hit the jump to check it out for yourself and make sure to read my edit bay visit!
Here’s the synopsis. Thanks to Max for the heads up.
A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.  The film also stars Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand and Anthony Mackie.

***2011 Oscar Preview

2011 Oscar Preview

by Adam Chitwood    Posted:November 26th, 2010

Best Supporting Actor

Frontrunners:
Christian Bale – The Fighter
Geoffrey Rush – The King’s Speech
Likely to be nominated:
Mark Ruffalo – The Kids Are All Right
Sam Rockwell – Conviction
Michael Douglas – Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
Outside contenders:
Armie Hammer – The Social Network
Andrew Garfield – The Social Network
Ed Harris – The Way Back
This could finally be Bale’s year, after incredible performances in just about every role he takes on (I think we can safely pretend like Terminator: Salvation never happened now, right?). His work in The Fighter has everyone talking, and at the moment this category looks like his to lose.  However, Rush could very well pull an upset. He hasn’t won since Shine and his role in The King’s Speech seems right up the Academy’s alley. Douglas’ cancer scare will more than likely have the Academy thinking of him, though whether he gets nominated for Wall Street or Solitary Man is a bit of a toss-up. Given the nostalgia for the role, and the resonance with today’s economic times, Wall Street may be the better bet. Rockwell does some great work in Conviction, but he most likely has a better role in him somewhere down the line that the Academy will reward him for (that guilt for snubbing him for Moon has to catch up sometime).  Hammer and Garfield turned in fine performances in Social Network, but they may be a bit too young. However, the Supporting categories always seem to be where the out-of-left-field nominee comes from every year, so Hammer or Garfield (or even Timberlake) could still be a possibility.

In a neat feature, Jon Favreau breaks down the  recently released (and very cool) teaser trailer for Cowboys & Aliens in a video commentary.  Favreau is appropriately self-deprecating (“Let’s look back on the fond memories of the Cowboys & Aliens trailer”), but shares some interesting tidbits.  For instance, the opening of the trailer is the first shot of the film, and the wire you see yanking a cowboy into the air is not a goof, but a device that the aliens use to abduct their prey.
Favreau stuck around to answer a few additional questions, including how they approached the mashup of sci-fi and Westerns, and how Harrison Ford came to be in the film.  Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Noah Ringer, Paul Dano, Keith Carradine, and Sam Rockwell also star.Hit the jump to check out the clips.

“Every Genre Has Its Own Set Of Rules”
“The Cowboys & Aliens Trailer Is Just A Teaser”
Harrison Ford Casting Was “A Long Shot”
Cowboys & Aliens opens July 29, 2011.  Here’s the official synopsis:
1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde. It’s a town that lives in fear.
But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.
Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella, he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents – townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors – all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

Teaser Trailer for COWBOYS & ALIENS Starring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, and Olivia Wilde

A couple days ago, the teaser poster for Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens went online.  Now we have the teaser trailer for the film.  If you saw the footage they played at Comic-Con, then a lot of this trailer will look familiar.  If you weren’t one of the 6,000 people sitting in Hall H that day, then don’t worry: what they showed us was bad-ass.  Despite the silly title, this trailer confirms what I’ve heard about the movie playing both the western and the sci-fi elements completely straight.  I don’t know how that will play with a populace that seems to crave irony at every turn, but I like the confidence and the willingness to try something original.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Directed by Jon Favreau, Cowboys & Aliens stars Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Adam Beach, Paul Dano, and Noah Ringer.  It opens July 29, 2011.

Rumor: Tom Hardy to Play Villain Dr. Hugo Strange in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 17th, 2010

Because Christopher Nolan likes keeping his projects as secret as nuclear launch codes, there’s been heavy speculation over who Tom Hardy will play in The Dark Knight Rises.  Nolan apparently thinks that if we know who Hardy is playing now instead of a few months from now when it’s inevitably revealed, our enjoyment of the film will be absolutely destroyed.  However, it’s okay to rumor-monger to our heart’s content and the rumor du jour is that Hardy is playing Dr. Hugo Strange, one of the film’s villains.  As we previously reported, the other villain will be a woman.
If you don’t know much about Strange, that’s okay.  He’s not one of Batman’s more famous rogues.  Hit the jump for a crash course in this potential nemesis.

According to Wikipedia, Strange has actually been around since 1940 and was one of Batman’s first recurring villains.  He’s a villain in the mad-scientist mold and possesses genius-level IQ and is a master of psychology.  In the comics mythology, Strange learned Batman’s secret identity but kept it to himself.  He eventually becomes obsessed with Batman, even going to the point where he starts dressing up like the Caped Crusader.
Keep in mind, Hugo Strange as the film’s villain is just a rumor at this point, although the folks over at Batman-News say that their source is reliable and knew that The Riddler wouldn’t be the villain and that Rachel Weisz and Anne Hathaway were in the running for the lead female role.
Assuming this is true, what are your thoughts on Strange being the villain?  Do you think Hardy is right for the role?  And if it’s false, who do you hope the villain will be?  Sound off in the comment section.

Ali (Christina Aguilera) is a small-town girl with a big voice who escapes hardship and an uncertain future to follow her dreams to LA. After stumbling upon The Burlesque Lounge, a majestic but ailing theater that is home to an inspired musical revue, Ali lands a job as a cocktail waitress from Tess (Cher), the club’s proprietor and headliner. Burlesque’s outrageous costumes and bold choreography enrapture the young ingenue, who vows to perform there one day. Soon enough, Ali builds a friendship with a featured dancer (Julianne Hough), finds an enemy in a troubled, jealous performer (Kristen Bell), and garners the affection of Jack (Cam Gigandet), a bartender and fellow musician. With the help of a sharp-witted stage manager (Stanley Tucci) and gender-bending host (Alan Cumming), Ali makes her way from the bar to the stage. Her spectacular voice restores The Burlesque Lounge to its former glory, though not before a charismatic entrepreneur (Eric Dane) arrives with an enticing proposal…
