Idris Elba Confirmed for Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 22nd, 2011

I’m glad to see that Idris Elba (The Wire) is finally getting his due. A fantastic actor, he recently starred in Thor, is currently filming Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, and now it looks like he’ll be starring in Guillermo del Toro’s next film Pacific Rim. Earlier this month, we told you that Legendary Pictures wanted Elba for the flick. Now, Deadline reports that the actor has closed his deal, taking on a role that was originally envisioned for Tom Cruise. The film takes place in two different worlds, with monsters featuring prominently. We laid out some plot details back in March, but the story basically centers on humans piloting giant robots to battle aliens invading through a wormhole-like structure.
Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) is set to star, with Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) in talks to take on a role as well. Elba was previously mentioned as a contender for the starring role in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, but Jamie Foxx is now rumored to be the frontrunner for that role after Will Smith passed. Elba joining Pacific Rim all but confirms that he’s out of the running for Tarantino’s latest. http://collider.com/idris-elba-pacific-rim-2/98025/

Watchmen Writer Hired To Pen The Crow Reboot, Bradley Cooper Confirmed To Star

published: 2011-06-23 01:12:07 Author: Eric Eisenberg
While I'm fully aware that there are more than a couple people who disagree, the Zack Snyder-directed adaptation of Watchmen isn't a bad movie. For years the Alan Moore comic was perceived as unfilmable and the truth is that writer Alex Tse not only did a good job structuring the incredibly complex plot, but did it in a way that always respected the source material. Now Tse has been hired to script another comic book property that fans aren't necessarily happy to see being done.

Relativity Media has announced via press release that Tse has been hired to write the script for the upcoming "reinvention" of The Crow. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who previously helmed 28 Weeks Later, has been officially announced as the director, and Bradley Cooper has been announced as Eric Draven, the film's central protagonist who returns from the dead to seek vengeance against those that murdered his wife. The film is a "gritty reboot" (yes, the press release uses those words) of the 1994 Alex Proyas film starring Brandon Lee.

As interesting as it could be to see what Tse does with the storyline, I still don't understand why anybody thinks this is a good idea. The Proyas film is a true cult classic with a huge fanbase that isn't going to be happy to hear that a studio thinks their favorite film isn't good enough for modern audiences. Do yourself a favor and instead of wasting your time thinking about this, just head over to Netflix and check it out on instant watch.

Warren Beatty Wants An All-Star Cast For His Howard Hughes Biopic

published: 2011-06-22 23:14:44 Author: Katey Rich
Back in February a rumor surfaced that once Christopher Nolan was done once and for all with the Batman franchise, he would move on to a biopic about Howard Hughes, this one focusing on his later years as opposed to the glitzy Hollywood era depicted in Martin Scorsese's The Aviator. But before Nolan is even done with the Bat cowl, a Hollywood legend might beat him to the punch. Deadline reports that Warren Beatty is finally moving ahead on his long-gestating dream project, and yes, it's a biopic of Howard Hughes that he plans to star in and direct.

They've also got a list of the actors Beatty has been meeting with, and weirdly enough, it includes Alec Baldwin, who played a major character in The Aviator. It also includes a laundry list of interesting up and coming actors-- Andrew Garfield, Shia LaBeouf, Evan Rachel Wood and Rooney Mara-- plus Jack Nicholson and, of course, his wife Annette Bening. Deadline says it's not really a biopic, even though Beatty will play Hughes and the movie will focus on the mogul's later years. It's too early to say how it might affect Nolan's film, since both films are in early development and who knows what else Nolan has in mind, so you don't have to choose Team Warren vs. Team Christopher just yet. When the time comes, though, just remember who has the backup supply of Batarangs to prove his point.

Fox Sets Max Landis To Write Yet Another Frankenstein Movie

published: 2011-06-22 22:52:47 Author: Katey Rich
There are nearly half a dozen takes on the classic Frankenstein story in the works in Hollywood right now, but apparently there's still room for one more. Variety reports that Fox has hired Max Landis, the writer of the in-development screenplay Chronicle and, yes, the son of John, to work on the screenplay for a new Frankenstein film. There's no word on what kind of take he'd have on the story, but with Proof playwright David Auburn working on one that incorporates Mary Shelley herself into the story, Matt Reeves directing one about Dr. Frankenstein attempting to save his brother's life, and Sony planning a modern day version of the story, he's going to have to think pretty hard to come up with something original.

When you've got so many similar projects in development at the same time, it becomes a kind of an arms race where only one winner is possible-- it's very rare that we wind up with situations like the one between Universal and Relativity Media, as each works on their own Snow White story. Who knows how Landis's project will fit into the derby, though he'll have to move fast if he wants to beat out some of these other ones, which have been in development for years. There's no one on board to direct this one right now, though apparently Paul Greengrass and David Yates are on the wishlist.

Jessica Biel smiles for fans outside the set of Total Recall on Monday (June 20) in Toronto, Canada.
The 29-year-old actress signed autographs for onlookers after a busy day shooting scenes.
Earlier this month, Jessica arrived in Canada to begin filming the movie, which also stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, and Ethan Hawke.
Jess had to dye her hair a darker shade of brown for the flick!
“Her color is supposed to look very rich for the film. It’s definitely darker, but there are a lot of highlights all over,” Jess‘ hair consultant Tracey Cunningham said. “I also added a reddish gloss for extra warmth.” http://justjared.buzznet.com/2011/06/22/jessica-biel-darker-brown-for-total-recall/

Exclusive: Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel Officially Cast in TOTAL RECALL; Filming Starts Monday in Toronto [UPDATED]

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: May 25th, 2011 at 3:33 pm

Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Colin Farrell Total Recall remake slice
Last month we heard that Sony Pictures had offered Kate Beckinsale the role of Lori opposite Colin Farrell in their Total Recall remake.  With her husband, Len Wiseman, directing the project and given that they previously collaborated on the Underworld movies, it wasn’t really much of a surprise.  However, sources have now told us that she’s officially signed on and Jessica Biel is going to play the other female lead (Melina).  In addition to the casting news, we’ve been told filming starts Monday in Toronto.
For those playing catch up on the remake, Colin Farrell is set to star, Ethan Hawke has a cameo, and Bryan Cranston is poised to play the villain.  The remake will apparently be closer to Phillip K. Dick’s source material than the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger flick. Farrell plays a factory worker who begins to believe he’s a spy for either the nation stat Euromerica or New Shanghai, but he doesn’t know which.  Hit the jump for a recap of what we know about the film so far.
[Update: Heat Vision reports that Bill Nighy has joined the cast as the enigmatic Quatto, the leader of the resistance.] http://collider.com/kate-beckinsale-jessica-biel-total-recall/92933/

Confirmed: Jeff Bridges to Co-Star with Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D.; Filming in Boston This September

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 25th, 2011 at 2:35 pm

jeff-bridges-ripd-slice
Last month, we reported that Jeff Bridges was in talks to co-star with Ryan Reynolds in the adaptation of the Dark Horse comic series R.I.P.D. The comics are about a group of dead lawmen in the “Rest in Peace Department” who try to keep other dead folks in line.  The Wrap now confirms that Bridges is on board to play Roy Powell, whom producer Neal Moritz described as “a gunslinger who’s been dead for hundreds of years.”  Reynolds plays Powell’s partner, Nick Cruz, a recently murdered cop who’s out for revenge.  Powell was originally set to be played by Zach Galifianakis, but he dropped out over concerns that the project would be delayed if Warner Bros. exercised Reynolds’ option on Green Lantern 2.  However, we have now confirmed that filming is set for mid-September in Boston.
My main concern over this project rests with director Robert Schwentke.  While the action scenes in Red were competent enough, he had a tough time finding the comedy and R.I.P.D. is being billed as a “supernatural comedy”.  In the meantime, we’ll wait and see if Reynolds will move to this film or if he’ll be headed back to Oa.  http://collider.com/ripd-jeff-bridges-ryan-reynolds/92921/

Trailer for Alexander Payne’s THE DESCENDANTS Starring George Clooney

It may not feature angry 3D sharks, but Alexander Payne’s new film The Descendants might be a better movie.  The film stars George Clooney as the “back-up” parent to two daughters.  He must step up when his wife suffers a serious boating accident off of Waikiki, and then he learns the hard truth that she was cheating on him.  Judging by the trailer, the flick looks to have the same strong character relationships tinged with humor and sadness as seen in Payne’s previous films.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard, Beau Bridges, and Robert Forster.  The Descendants opens December 16th. http://collider.com/descendants-trailer/92891/

Red-Band International Trailer for THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Debuts in Europe; Green-Band Domestic Trailer Launches June 2nd

The release of David Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a little over six months away.  With that in mind, Sony has begun the film’s marketing campaign and a red-band trailer has already rolled out overseas (although technically it’s just “unrated” because the MPAA doesn’t evaluate international trailers).  While I’ve been checking YouTube to see that trailer, Deadline reports that a domestic green-band trailer is set to arrive Thursday, June 2nd so we won’t have to wait long to get our first look at the film.
Hit the jump for a description of the red-band trailer.  The film stars Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgard, and Christopher Plummer.  The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens December 21st. http://collider.com/girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo-trailer-david-fincher/92858/

**SOCIAL NETWORK Actor Josh Pence Joins THE DARK KNIGHT RISES **Casting Call: Tobey Maguire Joins Ang Lee’s LIFE OF PI; Willem Dafoe in Talks for Stephen Sommers’ ODD THOMAS **Jessica Biel Close to Grabbing One of the Lead Female Roles in TOTAL RECALL Remake **Another New Clip From THOR **Nick Cassavetes Replaces Liam Neeson in THE HANGOVER PART II Cameo

SOCIAL NETWORK Actor Josh Pence Joins THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 8th, 2011

With production on Christopher Nolan’s unbelievably anticipated The Dark Knight Rises getting ready to begin production soon, the director is filling out the rest of his cast. The latest actor to join the project is The Social Network actor Josh Pence. Heat Vision reports that the actor will take on the role of a young Ra’s Al Ghul in a flashback. Liam Neeson portrayed Al Ghul in Batman Begins, and this casting confirms reports that Nolan really is tying his trilogy together with this last installment in his Batman franchise. There are also rumors that Ra’s daughter, Talia Al Ghul will appear in The Dark Knight Rises (Marion Cotillard, perhaps?)
Now, you may not remember seeing Pence’s face in The Social Network, but that’s because you never did. Pence played opposite Armie Hammer as one half of the Winklevoss twins, but his face was digitally replaced with Hammer’s to accurately reflect the two as identical twins. The Dark Knight Rises now stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Juno Temple. The film hits theaters July 20th, 2012.

Casting Call: Tobey Maguire Joins Ang Lee’s LIFE OF PI; Willem Dafoe in Talks for Stephen Sommers’ ODD THOMAS

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 8th, 2011

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you today, both involving adaptations of books. First up, Variety reports that Tobey Maguire is re-teaming with director Ang Lee for his adaptation of Yann Martel’s Life of Pi. The story centers on a boy named Pi who gets stranded for 227 days with a tiger. Maguire will play the man who interviews the adult Pi about his experience. The cast for the 3D film now includes newcomer Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan (In Treatment), Adil Hussain (Calendar Girls), and Gerard Depardieu. The film is slated for a December 14th, 2012 release.
Additionally, Willem Dafoe is in talks to join director Stephen Sommers’ (The Mummy) adaptation of the Dean Koontz supernatural thriller Odd Thomas. The film centers on a short-order cook who can commune with the dead. Heat Vision reports that Dafoe is in talks to play a local police chief. Anton Yelchin and Addison Timlin are poised to star in the film. Shooting is set to start in New Mexico later this spring. Hit the jump for a synopsis of both Life of Pi and Odd Thomas.

Jessica Biel Close to Grabbing One of the Lead Female Roles in TOTAL RECALL Remake

by Adam Chitwood  Posted: April 8th, 2011

Len Wiseman’s (Live Free or Die Hard) remake of Total Recall may be close to casting one of the two lead female roles. Variety reports that Jessica Biel is circling one of the roles opposite Colin Farrell in the remake of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger starred sci-fi film. The two roles in the original, Lori and Melina, were played by Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin respectively. Apparently early word was that Biel was going after Melina, but the trade says that there’s a chance she’s going after the other character. Other actresses reading for the roles include Eva Mendes, Diane Kruger and Kate Bosworth.
Bryan Cranston is set to play the villain in the remake. When producer Neil Moritz sat down with Steve a while ago, he stated that this film is closer to Philip K. Dick’s book than the 1990 film was, and in the remake they won’t be going to space (which is kind of confusing, given that a major plot point involves Mars). Further plot details are scarce, and at this point we don’t even know what villain Cranston is portraying. Nevertheless, the addition of Cranston to the cast automatically puts this in my “must-see” category. Total Recall hits theaters August 3rd 2012.

Nick Cassavetes Replaces Liam Neeson in THE HANGOVER PART II Cameo

by Nicole Pedersen    Posted: April 9th, 2011

With just weeks to go before the release of The Hangover Part II, director Todd Phillips has announced that Liam Neeson’s cameo performance as a Bangkok tattoo artist has been cut from the film.  Back in October Neeson was called in to replace Mel Gibson, whose appearance in the sequel “did not have the full support” of the Hangover cast and crew.  Details on who will replace Neeson are after the jump.

The Dark Knight Rises Gets Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the Holiday Killer

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is The Holiday KillerThe plan was to keep Joseph Gordon-Levitt's role in director Christopher Nolan's upcoming sequel The Dark Knight Rises a secret. The actor was confirmed to be involved with the project on Friday. Now, an insider from Christopher Nolan's camp has stepped forward to reveal more information about this trilogy ending sequel.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be playing Alberto Falcone, aka The Holiday Killer. The character figured heavily in the original comic book story The Long Halloween, in which Alberto, refused a place at his father's side in the Gotham Mafia, goes on a Halloween killing spree. He then continues to pop up on various holidays, taking out members of the criminal underworld. He is captured by Bruce Wayne after murdering Sal Maroni.

Tom Wilkinson portrayed Alberto's Mafia chieftain father Carmine Falcone in Batman Begins, which brings this trilogy full-circle. It is not clear at this point how The Holiday Killer will figure into the storyline of The Dark Knight Rises, which also includes villains Catwoman and Bane.

At this time, Christopher Nolan is continuing to fine-tune his script. Production on The Dark Knight Rises is set to begin later this year.

The Dark Knight Rises comes to theaters July 20th, 2012 and stars Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

**Uma Thurman and Jessica Biel Join Gerard Butler in Soccer Comedy PLAYING THE FIELD **Confirmed: Louis Leterrier Will Direct Sci-Fi Disaster Film “G” (Formerly GRAVITY) After NOW YOU SEE ME

Uma Thurman and Jessica Biel Join Gerard Butler in Soccer Comedy PLAYING THE FIELD

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 22nd, 2011

The next big American soccer comedy (after The Big Green, yes that one with the Sandlot kid) has added two more names to its cast. Uma Thurman and Jessical Biel have joined previously announced Gerard Butler in Playing the Field. Directed by Gabriele Muccino, the film tells the story of a troubled father trying to make up for lost time by coaching his son’s team — but who finds himself in hot water after some of the local mothers take a little too much of a shine to him (and he to them).
Variety reports that Biel will star as Butler’s ex-wife, while Thurman will play one of the soccer moms trying to seduce Butler. The actor is also producing the film, with a script from Robbie Fox (So I Married an Axe Murderer). Pre-production is underway with filming set to start soon. As we reported earlier today, Muccino will move on to direct the romance film Adaline following Playing the Field.

Several months ago, we learned Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans) was circling a disaster film (then called Gravity) with this cool premise: “a father who has to search for his lost child as the world stops spinning and Earth begins to lose its gravity.”  Leterrier has officially signed on to produce and direct the movie, now called G, for Universal Pictures.  The project is based on an original idea by producer Guymon Casady (The Expendables) that has drawn comparisons to The Day After Tomorrow and Taken. Leterrier, Casady, and fellow producers Mark Gordon (2012), George Nolfi and Michael Hackett (The Adjustment Bureau) are currently looking for writers to turn the visually rich logline into a script.
Heat Version confirms that Leterrier will first direct Now You See Me, a heist thriller that pits FBI agents against “a super team of the world’s greatest illusionists.”  Leterrier previously demonstrated a penchant for single-letter titles with his interest in the acclaimed comic book Y: The Last Man.  I believe Y: The Last Man will reach the screen before I die (hopefully after I read it), but it seems increasingly unlikely that Leterrier will own the “Directed by” credit.  Leterrier has two “go” projects on his plate, while last we checked he was struggling to find financing for Y.  No matter — Now You See Me has potential, and G sounds positively cool.

Sofia Vergara and Jessica Biel in Talks to Join Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer for NEW YEAR’S EVE

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 8th, 2010

Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) and Jessica Biel (The A-Team) are in talks to join Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank, Ashton Kutcher, Lea Michele, and Abigail Breslin in New Year’s Eve.  The ensemble romantic comedy is a loose follow-up to Valentine’s Day — same format, new holiday: “a group of New Yorkers as they navigate their way through romance over the course of New Year’s Eve.”  Both New Year’s and Valentine’s are credited to director Garry Marshall.
According to THR, Biel is a pregnant woman who tries to win a cash prize with the first baby of the new year.  (“Hold it in, honey!  Daddy needs a new pair o’ shoes!”)  No details are given on Vergara’s role.  Shooting will begin in New York later this month.

New Images from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES; Plus Quotes from Johnny Depp and Co-Writer Terry Rossio

by Jason Barr    Posted: December 8th, 2010

Conveniently sandwiched in between the first footage from the film and its upcoming trailer debut, some new images from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides have landed online.  One of the images, which features Captain Jack Sparrow being led away by friendly persuasion, comes courtesy of a recent on-set interview in which Depp said of his character:
There’s a side to Captain Jack that’s a wheeler-dealer, where he can talk his way out of anything, get out of any situation. But there is also a side to him that can’t stand for grave injustice.
To check out the two new images, as well as a few quotes from co-writer Terry Rossio, hit the jump.  In addition to Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides also stars Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, and Geoffrey Rush.  The film, directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago), hits 3D theaters on May 20th, 2011.
pirates_of_the_caribbean_on_stranger_tides_teaser_poster_hi-res_01On set in Greenwich, England, co-writer Terry Rossio talks with USA Today (2nd article here) about how he looks at this installment in regards to its three predecessors:
It’s a completely different beast, the three previous films are a trilogy, with an intricate, interwoven tapestry of characters. I would call this a stand-alone type of story.
Rossio goes on to discuss the lone image which inspired his writing on the film:
Jack Sparrow dancing with somebody on deck. More of a romantic period dance. A ship in the moonlight, and Jack Sparrow having to dance to maybe seduce somebody. So you write that on a card and say, ‘Why is Jack Sparrow dancing?’
Finally, the co-writer offers some insight into the psyche of Penelope Cruz’s character, Angelica:
Jack has perhaps not only met his equal, but also found that she is a kindred spirit who is a con artist at heart as well. She’s not only a romantic interest, but an equal and effective adversary.
Here’s the new images, both of which you can click to enlarge [the first also comes courtesy of USA Today]:

Jessica Biel for Revlon

hot and sexy jessica biel, hot jessica biel in bikini, hot jessica biel wallpapers and photos, hot jessica biel boobs/breastsThe Valentine's Day actress has stepped into the famed silver sequined gown and flaming red sateen shawl that the iconic model-actress wore for Revlon's
1952 Fire & Ice campaign, according to StyleList.

Revlon isn't just bringing back the ad campaign, though: The cosmetics giant is re-creating the Fire & Ice brand with a series of other lipstick and nailpolish pairings via its Super Lustrous Lipsticks and Nail Enamels that are reminiscent of the 1952 line.

The new lipstick shades include Siren (orange), Temptress (fuchsia pink), Demure (soft pink) and the returning Fire & Ice red, which will tap into the initial 1950s feel of the campaign and be packaged in an old-Hollywood makeup traincase.
Lipsticks retail at $7.99 with matching nail polishes running $4.79; Fire & Ice vintage will run $8.99. The brand will be in stores nationwide this month.

Jessica Biel Biography

Jessica Claire Biel (born March 3, 1982) is an American actress and model. Biel is known for her television role as Mary Camden in the long-running family-drama series 7th Heaven.

She has also appeared in several Hollywood films, including Summer Catch, the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Illusionist, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, and The A-Team.

Early life

Jessica Claire Biel was born in Ely, Minnesota. Her mother Kimberly (née Conroe) is a homemaker and spiritual healer. Her father Jonathan Biel worked for GE as well as being an entrepreneur and business consultant. She has a younger brother, Justin, born in 1985, and is of German, French, English, and Choctaw ancestry. Biel's family moved frequently during her childhood, living in Texas, Connecticut, and Woodstock, Illinois before finally settling in Boulder, Colorado. While growing up, Biel played soccer and also trained as a gymnast. She is also an avid snowboarder.

Early work

Biel initially trained to be a vocalist, and from age nine appeared in several musical productions in her hometown, playing lead roles in productions such as Annie, The Sound of Music, and Beauty and the Beast.

At twelve, Biel attended The International Modeling and Talent Association conference in Los Angeles where she was discovered and signed by a talent agency. She began modeling for print advertisements, and appeared in commercials for products such as Dulux Paint and Pringles.

Biel also played the character Regrettal, a lead role in a low-budget musical short titled It's a Digital World, but the film was never released. At fourteen, after auditioning for several television pilots, Biel was cast as Mary Camden, the oldest daughter in the family drama 7th Heaven. The show ran 11 seasons, making it the longest-running family drama in U.S. television history.

Career

Biel landed her first feature film role as Peter Fonda's granddaughter in the critically-acclaimed drama Ulee's Gold, released in 1997. Her performance earned her a Young Artist Award. In spring 1998, during a break from filming 7th Heaven, Biel starred in I'll Be Home for Christmas, playing the love interest of Jonathan Taylor Thomas.

In 2000, during the fourth season of 7th Heaven, Biel commented that she'd grown tired of playing the wholesome preacher's kid, and blamed the show for giving her a squeaky-clean image, causing her to lose out on a role in American Beauty (the part went to Thora Birch). In a last-ditch attempt to be released from her contract, she posed semi-nude for the cover of Gear magazine. The shoot sparked considerable controversy as Biel was still under eighteen at the time. Fans and producers of 7th Heaven were outraged, and the latter brought legal action against Gear magazine. 7th Heaven producer Aaron Spelling made it clear that Biel would be staying with the show for the remainder of her contract, although Biel appeared in minimal episodes in season five, due to her character attending college out of state. She has stated that she regrets the Gear shoot but considers it a learning experience.

In 2001, Biel played the love interest of Freddie Prinze, Jr. in the baseball themed movie Summer Catch. The next year she starred as promiscuous college student Lara in the ensemble movie The Rules of Attraction, an adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel.

2003–2005

After leaving 7th Heaven at the end of its sixth season, Biel was cast in her first top-billing role in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The film met with mixed reviews but was a commercial success, scoring the number-one spot in its opening week and going on to earn more than $80 million in the U.S.

In 2003, Biel began work on the third installment of the Blade film series, Blade: Trinity. Almost immediately after finishing it in 2004, she headed to Australia to shoot the action-thriller Stealth. Both movies were critical and box office failures. Stealth had a budget of $130 million but grossed $76 million worldwide. Biel also made a cameo appearance in the 2004 film Cellular.

Biel went on to audition for the role of Claire Colburn in the romantic comedy Elizabethtown, but the role eventually went to Kirsten Dunst. Biel was instead cast in a smaller role as Ellen Kishmore. She then played the title character in the indie film London.

2006–present

Biel's film career blossomed when she played a turn-of-the-century duchess in the period piece The Illusionist, co-starring Edward Norton and Paul Giamatti. The movie received mostly positive reviews and was a turning point for Biel, who had previously played more contemporary roles. She received the Rising Star Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and an Achievement Award at the Newport Beach Film Festival for her performance.

Biel played an Iraq War veteran in the 2006 film Home of the Brave, a drama about soldiers struggling to adjust back into society after facing the hardships of war. Her performance was well-received but the movie was a commercial failure. After being pulled from theaters twice, it eventually went to DVD in late 2007. Biel and Home of the Brave co-star Samuel L. Jackson were nominated for Prism Awards for their performances.

Meanwhile, after a three-year absence from television, Biel returned for what was to be the series finale of 7th Heaven (the show was later unexpectedly renewed at the last minute by The CW Television Network). The episode had already been initially shot, but producer and creator Brenda Hampton was determined to have Biel featured in the episode, so Biel agreed to shoot her scenes during a break from filming her upcoming 2007 film Next.

In Next, Biel played alongside Nicolas Cage and Julianne Moore. She then played in the summer comedy, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, co-starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James. Like her earlier film, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Chuck and Larry received mixed reviews, but opened its first week at number one at the box office. Biel also produced and starred in a short film titled Hole in the Paper Sky, which was released in 2008.

Biel was invited to announce nominations at both the Golden Globe Awards (with Rosario Dawson and Matthew Perry) and the Academy Awards in 2007.

In late 2007, Biel signed on to play a stripper in Powder Blue, alongside Forest Whitaker (who also produced the film) Ray Liotta and Patrick Swayze.

At the start of 2008, Biel shot Easy Virtue, an adaptation of the play by Noël Coward. Like the play, the movie is set in the 1920s and Biel plays young widow Larita, who impulsively marries John Whittaker in France and must face her disapproving in-laws on returning to England. The film premiered in September 2008 at the Toronto International Film Festival. Critics praised Biel for her performance, with Todd McCarthy of Variety saying Biel "more than kept up" with veterans Kristin Scott Thomas and Colin Firth and praising her "sparkling" performance. The Hollywood Reporter described her performance as "an irresistible force of nature — a kind, witty, supremely intelligent and beautiful woman who ... is capable of rejoinders that thoroughly undercut her opponent's withering criticism."

In 2009, Biel lent her voice to the animated science-fiction film Planet 51.

In April 2008, Biel began working on the political satire Nailed, with Jake Gyllenhaal. The movie centers around a woman who accidentally gets a nail lodged in her head, then travels to Washington D.C. to fight for better health care. Filming wrapped up in late June after several production shutdowns. She is also co-producing and starring in Die a Little, a contemporary adaptation of the novel by Megan Abbott. A filming start date has not been set.

Musical endeavor

Biel applied to join the a cappella choir the Tufts Amalgamates while studying at University but was not accepted.

Biel performed two songs on the Easy Virtue soundtrack, "Mad About the Boy" and "When the Going Gets Tough".

The Los Angeles Philharmonic announced that Biel would perform the role of "Sarah Brown" in a fully-staged concert production of Guys and Dolls during the 2009 season at the Hollywood Bowl. On the last night, she received a rousing standing ovation from 17,000 people.

Biel also landed a part in Lincoln Center Theater's two-week-long workshop of the musical version of the Pedro Almodóvar classic Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, along with Salma Hayek.

Charity work

On July 18, 2006, Biel participated in a charity auction to raise medical funds for Colorado teen Molly Bloom, who was injured in a limousine accident. John Schiffner of Fergus Falls, Minnesota successfully bid $30,000 to have lunch with Biel. "I promise I'm a cheap date," Biel quipped. Biel and Schiffner lunched at The Palm restaurant in Denver, Colorado on August 18, 2006.

In early 2007, Jessica co-founded the Make the Difference Network with her father and another business partner, Kent McBride. Make the Difference Network (MTDN) is a cause-oriented social network that connects non-profit organizations with potential donors and increases the awareness for small-to-medium non-profit organizations. MTDN's mission is to democratize giving by increasing the visibility of thousands of non-profit organizations and empowering potential donors to search, select, and fund these organizations' specific "wishes" and then to see the results of their giving. Make the Difference Network was also featured at the 2007 Clinton Global Initiative, where they made a commitment to democratize giving through the use of a social network.

In 2010, Biel climbed to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro with members of the United Nation Foundation to raise awareness of the global water crisis. Also in 2010, Biel's humanitarian and charity work (as well as her popularity with young people) earned her a nomination for a Do Something Award. The awards show, produced by VH1, is dedicated to honoring people who do good and is powered by Do Something, an organization that aims to empower, celebrate, and inspire young people.
