Casting Call: Vincent D’Onofrio, Chelsea Handler, and Eric Bogosian Join MALL; Walton Goggins Set for Indie Drama OFFICER DOWN

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you today. First up, Vincent D’Onofrio, Chelsea Handler and Eric Bogoslan will star in an adaptation of Bogoslan’s novel Mall, the directorial debut of Linkin Park’s Joe Hahn. Deadline reports that the film will tell the intersecting stories of five suburbanites: “a stoner teen, a restless housewife, a voyeuristic businessman, a mall security guard and a trigger-happy crystal meth addict who heads to the mall looking for trouble.” Handler will play the dark role of the housewife, D’Onofrio will take on the voyeuristic businessman, and Bogoslan is set to play a store owner. Hahn has directed a number of Linkin Park’s music videos.Additionally, Walton Goggins (Justified) has joined the cast of the indie drama Officer Down. The film stars David Boreanaz, Stephen Dorff, Dominic Purcell (Prison Break) and AnnaLynne McCord (90210) and centers on a doctor and security guard who live out each other’s daytime lives in their dreams at night. The security guard murders his wife, but is then hit by a car and is brought in to the hospital that he doctor works at, where they recognize each other. Deadline reports that Goggins will play the prime suspect in the sexual assault of a young woman, a case being investigated by Dorff’s character. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of the novel Mall.

Keanu Reeves in Talks for AKIRA? [UPDATED]

Now, Vulture reports that Keanu Reeves is in very early talks to take on the starring role in the film. Based upon the manga and the 1988 anime adaptation, Akira centers on teenager Shōtarō Kaneda and his quest to stop his friend Tetsuo from destroying Neo-Tokyo. Hit the jump for more on the project.

Laura Linney to Star Opposite Bill Murray in HYDE PARK ON THE HUDSON; Ricky Gervais’ Voice Joins SPY KIDS: ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD

Laura Linney (The Big C) will star alongside Bill Murray in Hyde Park on the Hudson. The film focuses on FDR’s love affair with his cousin, Daisy, during a June weekend in 1939 when the British King and Queen visited Roosevelt’s upstate New York cottage in what was the first ever visit to America by a member of the British monarchy. As we previously reported, the notoriously reclusive Bill Murray has signed on to star as FDR. Now, Deadline reports that Linney has signed on to play FDR’s cousin/lover, Daisy. I’ll watch anything with Bill Murray and it’ll be interesting to see who will end up playing Eleanor Roosevelt along with the King and Queen. Roger Mitchell (Morning Glory) will direct the film.In other casting news, Ricky Gervais has signed on to voice the character of Argonaut in the upcoming Spy Kids film, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World. In the press release Gervais said, “Not only am I lending my voice to Spy Kids, but they can keep it. I’m sick of it.” Not much is known about Argonaut besides the fact that he is a robot spy dog. Gervais joins the cast which already includes Jessica Alba, Jeremy Piven, Joel McHale, Rowan Blanchard, Mason Cook, Antonio Banderas, Danny Trejo , Alexa Vega, and Daryl Sabara. Will Smith has been informally offered the lead role in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming “Southern”/Spaghetti Western, Django Unchained. The project came out of nowhere last week and we’ve slowly been getting more details about the film during the past couple of days. We know that Tarantino is aiming to start production in late summer or fall and we also have this plot synopsis:“Django is a freed slave, who, under the tutelage of a German bounty hunter becomes a bad-ass bounty hunter himself, and after assisting Waltz in taking down some bad guys for profit, is helped by Waltz in tracking down his slave wife and liberating her from an evil plantation owner.”The film is moving at a fast pace and we now have some info regarding who Tarantino is hoping to cast and which roles they play. Blackfilm.com reports that Dennis Quaid has joined Gerard Butler, Uma Thurman, Jessica Biel and Noah Lomax in director Gabriele Muccino's sports comedy Playing the Field.
Butler will play a former professional athlete with a weak past who tries to redeem himself by coaching his son's soccer team, only to find himself unable to resist when in scoring position with his players' restless and gorgeous moms.
Biel will play Butler's ex-wife, while Thurman will play a fellow parent.
Quaid is playing one of the coaches on the opposing teams.
Shooting on the film starts this month in Shreveport, Louisiana.

In Playing the Field, Gerard Butler plays George Dryer, a former soccer player who goes back to try and patch things up with his son (Noah Lomax) and estranged wife (Jessica Biel) - who is engaged to remarry someone else - and ends up coaching the boy's soccer team. He becomes the subject of fascination and desire by every bored house wife in town, especially the gorgeous Patti (Uma Thurman) who sets out on a mission to seduce the coach. Dryer must try to survive the extreme temptations of Patti and advances of the other soccer moms, as well as revive his relationship with his son.
Dennis Quaid is playing one of the coaches on the opposing teams.
Production starts this month in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Johnny Depp wants to guest star on Life's Too ShortJohnny Depp might appear in a guest-starring role on the upcoming BBC series Life's Too Short from Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.
The series stars Warwick Davis as an egotistical dwarf who runs a talent agency for dwarfs in the entertainment industry. It isn't clear if Johnny Depp would play himself or another character in the show.
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant wrote the pilot script and the series has been greenlit for a six-episode order on BBC. It is expected that the show will also be shown on HBO.
Production will begin on the series this May in England. It is also said that Ricky Gervais has approached Jerry Seinfeld to play a, "whiny Upper East Side Jewish guy."

The Dark Knight Rises Gets Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the Holiday Killer
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is The Holiday KillerThe plan was to keep Joseph Gordon-Levitt's role in director Christopher Nolan's upcoming sequel The Dark Knight Rises a secret. The actor was confirmed to be involved with the project on Friday. Now, an insider from Christopher Nolan's camp has stepped forward to reveal more information about this trilogy ending sequel.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be playing Alberto Falcone, aka The Holiday Killer. The character figured heavily in the original comic book story The Long Halloween, in which Alberto, refused a place at his father's side in the Gotham Mafia, goes on a Halloween killing spree. He then continues to pop up on various holidays, taking out members of the criminal underworld. He is captured by Bruce Wayne after murdering Sal Maroni.
Tom Wilkinson portrayed Alberto's Mafia chieftain father Carmine Falcone in Batman Begins, which brings this trilogy full-circle. It is not clear at this point how The Holiday Killer will figure into the storyline of The Dark Knight Rises, which also includes villains Catwoman and Bane.
At this time, Christopher Nolan is continuing to fine-tune his script. Production on The Dark Knight Rises is set to begin later this year.
The Dark Knight Rises comes to theaters July 20th, 2012 and stars Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

Darren Aronofsky Drops Out of THE WOLVERINE

Darren Aronofsky has exited the director’s chair on The Wolverine. The sequel to 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine was supposed to see Logan taking what he does best (stabbing) to Japan. Filming was rumored to begin this month for a 2012 release date. However, Fox has now sent out a press release stating that Aronofsky didn’t want to spend a year out of the country and away from his family. While the “spend more time with family” excuse usually is a smokescreen for behind-the-scenes machinations, Aronofsky recently divorced from Rachel Weisz and there may be a custody battle over their son. Also, as you may have heard, there was recently a giant earthquake in Japan and now may not be the best time to shoot a movie there.

If you’re a fan of James Patterson’s novel I, Alex Cross, the disappointments are starting to pile up. The adaptation is being handled by Rob Cohen (Stealth) and Tyler Perry is playing the titular detective. Now there’s another piece of perplexing casting as Deadline reports that Lost’s Matthew Fox will play the villain, serial killer Michael Sullivan. This is the same Matthew Fox who looks like he’s about to cry every five seconds. Here’s how Deadline describes the character: “one bad dude”, “kills both for money and thrills”, “known as the Butcher of Sligo”. Well, Fox will certainly be playing against type.
The story centers on Cross trying to catch Sullivan only to have Sullivan brutally murder Cross’ wife as retribution (that’ll teach ‘em!). Ed Burns will play Cross’ partner, Tommy Kane. Three studios are reportedly vying for the domestic distribution rights to the project. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

Fox will play villain Michael Sullivan and Burns is set to play Tommy Kane, Cross's partner. The site adds that at least three studios are in talks with QED about distributing the movie.

As a fan of comedy from our friends across the pond in the United Kingdom, I pretty much love anything Ricky Gervais delivers from The Office to Extras. Now I’m currently eagerly anticipating another one of his BBC shows hitting HBO with Life’s Too Short, a series which sees Warwick Davis (Professor Flitwick in the Harry Potter franchise and Wicket the Ewok in Return of the Jedi) as an egomaniac dwarf who runs a talent agency for fellow showbiz dwarfs. Gervais and Stephen Merchant (who also crafted the two aforementioned British comedy series) wrote the six episode first season which is described as a cross between Extras and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Now the show is even more enticing with some great guest appearances from some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Deadline reports Gervais is in the midst of working out a schedule with Johnny Depp to have some sort of guest role on the show, and he’s also approached Jerry Seinfeld for a guest spot to play “quite a whiny Upper East Side Jewish guy.” Honestly, this new series can’t come soon enough. While no formal deal is in place yet, the series is expected to hit HBO at some point, so stay tuned for more news on the project coming to the States.

Alan Tudyk to Play Stephen A. Douglas in ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER

Alan Tudyk (Firefly) will play Stephen A. Douglas in Timur Bekmambetov’s 3D adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. The book imagines our 16th President had a secret life fighting vampires and that was the real reason for the Civil War. In the history books, Douglas was opposite Lincoln on the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858 which helped to raise Lincoln’s national profile. In the Vampire Hunter, Douglas is recast as an “ally of the Southern vampires,” because the only thing that’s worse than vampires, are pro-slavery vampires.
Tudyk joins a cast that includes Benjamin Walker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anthony Mackie, Dominic Cooper, Jimmi Simpson, and Robin McLeavy. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is due out June 22, 2012.

Deadline reports Gervais is in the midst of working out a schedule with Johnny Depp to have some sort of guest role on the show, and he’s also approached Jerry Seinfeld for a guest spot to play “quite a whiny Upper East Side Jewish guy.” Honestly, this new series can’t come soon enough. Alan Tudyk to Play Stephen A. Douglas in ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER

Alan Tudyk (Firefly) will play Stephen A. Douglas in Timur Bekmambetov’s 3D adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. The book imagines our 16th President had a secret life fighting vampires and that was the real reason for the Civil War. In the history books, Douglas was opposite Lincoln on the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858 which helped to raise Lincoln’s national profile. In the Vampire Hunter, Douglas is recast as an “ally of the Southern vampires,” because the only thing that’s worse than vampires, are pro-slavery vampires.
Tudyk joins a cast that includes Benjamin Walker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anthony Mackie, Dominic Cooper, Jimmi Simpson, and Robin McLeavy. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is due out June 22, 2012.

Noah Baumbach Recruits Ben Stiller, James Franco, Greta Gerwig, Cate Blanchett for WHILE WE’RE YOUNG

Writer/director Noah Baumbach is prepping his next film, While We’re Young, and as usual, he’s culling an excellent cast. Ben Stiller and James Franco are attached to star, with offers out to Greta Gerwig and Cate Blanchett. Franco is the only newbie to the land of Baumbach. Stiller and Gerwig assumed the lead roles in his last film, Greenberg; Blanchett acted in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, the script of which Baumbach co-wrote.
Vulture indicates the story centers on “a free-spirited Brooklynite twenty-something couple (Franco and Gerwig) who inspires an uptight documentarian (Stiller) and his wife (Blanchett) to loosen up — with comedic consequences.” More after the jump.
It’s rumored that the role earmarked for Blanchett was originally intended for Jennifer Jason Leigh. Unfortunately, the actress filed for divorce from Mr. Baumbach last week. So… nope.
Baumbach also has The Emperor’s Children (but not Mr. Popper’s Penguins) in the pipeline. It appears While We’re Young is first in line, but either way, I believe we’ll have a Baumbach-directed film in 2011. Plus, he’s producing Peter Bogdanovich’s Squirrel to the Nuts and is somewhat ridiculously credited on the screenplay for Brett Ratner’s Tower Heist. Should be a good year for Baumbach fans.
These actors are all very good, and so in high demand, with upwards of a dozen projects between them. I’ll recap each as soullessly: in bullet form.

Would anyone following Jason Segel’s The Muppets be remotely surprised if it was announced that more people have joined the cast? Today, two more names have been added to the incredibly large list of high-profile celebrities appearing in the film. Also, along with the casting news comes a bunch of new photos from the set. Ricky Gervais and Emily Blunt are the newest additions to the movie, with their roles being kept a secret. Hit the jump to see who they will be joining in this movie of which I have run out of adjectives to describe; as well as the images. Gervais and Blunt will be joining Zach Galifianakis, Jack Black, Donald Glover, Danny Trejo, Eric Stonestreet, John Krasinski, Ed Helms, Lady Gaga, Paul Rudd, Alan Arkin, Billy Crystal, and Jean-Claude Van Damme in cameo roles. Who else can you ask for, especially considering there’s not that many people left in Hollywood to be cast? Alright, to be fair, I guess you could ask for Mickey Rooney, but according to a new photo appearing on the Facebook profile of Rooney’s stepson (weird, right?), he’ll have something to do with the film as well. Honestly, at this point anyone can join the cast and it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest. It’s been said, and said again, and said another time, why this movie could be great, so this time I’ll just let the casting news speak for itself and let you make up your own mind. The film was written by Segel and Forgetting Sarah Marshall director, Nicholas Stoller, and is directed by James Bobin (Flight of The Conchords). It is currently filming around Los Angeles with its main stars, Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, and Rashida Jones. It is to be released December 25, 2011. Images via BleedingCool:
