For those just tuning in, here’s the official synopsis for
Cowboys & Aliens:
1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde. It’s a town that lives in fear.
But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.
Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella, he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents – townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors – all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

A couple days ago, the
teaser poster for Jon Favreau’s
Cowboys & Aliens went online. Now we have the teaser trailer for the film. If you saw the footage they played at Comic-Con, then a lot of this trailer will look familiar. If you weren’t one of the 6,000 people sitting in Hall H that day, then don’t worry: what they showed us was bad-ass. Despite the silly title, this trailer confirms what I’ve heard about the movie playing both the western and the sci-fi elements completely straight. I don’t know how that will play with a populace that seems to crave irony at every turn, but I like the confidence and the willingness to try something original.

Because Christopher Nolan likes keeping his projects as secret as nuclear launch codes, there’s been heavy speculation over who
Tom Hardy will play in
The Dark Knight Rises. Nolan apparently thinks that if we know who Hardy is playing now instead of a few months from now when it’s inevitably revealed, our enjoyment of the film will be absolutely destroyed. However, it’s okay to rumor-monger to our heart’s content and the rumor du jour is that Hardy is playing Dr. Hugo Strange, one of the film’s villains. As we
previously reported, the other villain will be a woman.
If you don’t know much about Strange, that’s okay. He’s not one of Batman’s more famous rogues. Hit the jump for a crash course in this potential nemesis.
According to
Wikipedia, Strange has actually been around since 1940 and was one of Batman’s first recurring villains. He’s a villain in the mad-scientist mold and possesses genius-level IQ and is a master of psychology. In the comics mythology, Strange learned Batman’s secret identity but kept it to himself. He eventually becomes obsessed with Batman, even going to the point where he starts dressing up like the Caped Crusader.
Keep in mind, Hugo Strange as the film’s villain is just a rumor at this point, although the folks over at
Batman-News say that their source is reliable and knew that
The Riddler wouldn’t be the villain and that Rachel Weisz and Anne Hathaway were in the running for the lead female role.
Assuming this is true, what are your thoughts on Strange being the villain? Do you think Hardy is right for the role? And if it’s false, who do you hope the villain will be? Sound off in the comment section.
