New Posters for FAST FIVE and MIDNIGHT IN PARIS
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 17th, 2011

Universal has just released a new poster for Fast Five that doesn’t emphasize the cars or even the actors. No, this new poster puts the emphasis on a clear blue, tranquil sky, because when I think of the Fast and the Furious franchise, I think tranquility. Also, I’m definitely not a fan of the “Summer begins April 29th” tagline. The summer movie season begins the first Friday in May. If Universal thought the movie could compete in the summer, then they would have kept it at June 10th. They didn’t because April, while not the summer movie season, has been good for the franchise’s box office. You’re a late-spring movie, Fast Five. Deal with it.

There’s also a new poster for Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris. I’m not sure what Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” has to do with the plot (also, Van Gogh was Dutch so again, I’m missing the French connection), but it’s on the poster along with star Owen Wilson. Hit the jump to check out the posters.

Samuel L. Jackson to Star in Neo-Noir Thriller SAMARITAN
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 17th, 2011
Samuel L. Jackson is set to star in the neo-noir thriller Samaritan. Variety reports that Jackson will topline the flick to be directed by David Weaver (Century Hotel). The story centers on Foley (Jackson), a former grifter who, after serving a 20-year prison sentence, sets out to turn his life around. It’s not long, however, before the son of his former partner shows up and complicates things.

Luke Kirby (Shattered Glass) is poised to play Jackson’s former partner’s son, while Ruth Negga (Breakfast on Pluto) will take on the role of an “elusive woman” who crosses paths with Jackson’s character. Weaver co-wrote the script with Elan Mastai (Alone in the Dark). Samaritan is on somewhat of a fast track, with production set to begin next week in Toronto with an eye towards an early 2012 release. Jackson will move straight from Samaritan into Joss Whedon’s The Avengers.

Confirmed: Kevin Costner to Play Jonathan Kent in Zack Snyder’s SUPERMAN Reboot
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 17th, 2011
A couple weeks ago, it was reported that Kevin Costner was being considered for a key role in Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot. Well now Warner Bros. has confirmed that the actor has closed a deal to play Jonathan Kent, Clark Kent’s adopted father. Henry Cavill is poised to play the Man of Steel, and Diane Lane recently joined the cast as Kent’s adopted mother, Martha. Regarding Costner’s addition to the cast, Snyder had this to say:

“Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman. Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest super hero of all time.”

It looks like casting is ramping up on the film, so expect more names announced in the coming weeks. Yesterday, Zack Snyder spoke a bit about the project, saying that this flick will assume “there’s been no other Superman movies.” The currently untitled Superman reboot, produced by Christopher Nolan, is set to start filming soon for a December 2012 release. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Betty Thomas to Direct DESPERADOS; Described as a “Female HANGOVER” Starring Isla Fisher
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: March 17th, 2011
I think a name like Wayne McClammy destines you to be either a comedy director or a character on Spongebob Squarepants. McClammy chose the former, helming the viral Jimmy Kimmel Live segments “I’m Fucking Matt Damon” and “I’m Fucking Ben Affleck,” a slew of Sarah Silverman Program episodes, and was in talks to make his feature debut with Desperados. Sadly, Universal never reached a deal with McClammy. 24 Frames reports that Betty Thomas (Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel) is next in line for the job and sources suggest she will accept the offer.

Desperados is described as a “female Hangover” in which three women travel to Las Vegas “to set right a situation that had one of the women leaving a scathing message for a man she actually likes.” Isla Fisher is attached to star; the studio is currently looking to fill the other two lead roles. The script by Ellen Rapoport (The Jamie Kennedy Experiment) landed on the Black List of Hollywood’s best unproduced screenplays two years ago.

Thomas has a spotty resume of late, but I like her hire if only because it’s always unfortunate when you have to put a man in charge of a distinctly female comedy from a fresh female voice.

**Gore Verbinski's Lone Ranger Movie Will Actually Be Don Quixote **Rumor Has Kevin Costner Being Eyed To Play Jonathan Kent, Superman's Earthly Father **Is Kevin Costner Up For A Role In Zack Snyder's Superman Reboot? **UPDATED: Glenn Close To Play The Lead In The Susan Boyle Biopic?

Gore Verbinski's Lone Ranger Movie Will Actually Be Don Quixote

published: 2011-02-21 23:55:02 Author: Josh Tyler
Gore Verbinski is hard at work on a big screen version of The Lone Ranger, and that’s not going to be easy. It’s Tonto that’s the problem; handle it the wrong way, and the Native American sidekick character could easily come off as a racist caricature. It doesn’t help that Tonto’s being played by Johnny Depp who, though he may have some Native American ancestry somewhere (what Heinz 57 American doesn’t?), isn’t really Native American. Verbinski’s solution? He’s not really making The Lone Ranger.

For those of you wondering why anyone would cast a star like Johnny Depp to play a faithful sidekick instead of the movie’s lead, the answer is they haven’t. Though the movie’s titled “The Lone Ranger” Verbinski tells the
LA Times that it’s all about Tonto, and the entire thing will be told from his point of view. What’s more, it’s not so much the classic Lone Ranger story he’s telling, actually, he’s sort of turning the whole thing into Don Quixote. He explains, “The only version of ‘The Lone Ranger’ I’m interested in doing is ‘Don Quixote’ told from Sancho Panza’s point of view.”

That’s been the plan all along apparently. Verbinski says, “I was honest early on with Johnny that Tonto is the part. We’re not going to do it [straight], everyone knows that story. I don’t want to tell that story.” Cervantes is the real influence for the story he’s telling, not the 1933 radio adventures or subsequent TV series we all think of when we think Lone Ranger.

What’s more, it sounds like they’re going to really use Johnny Depp’s talent for playing somewhat unbalanced characters to the fullest. Gore says, “I want the version from the untrustworthy narrator who might be a little crazy — but somehow the question is, is he crazy or is the world crazy?” Why do I suddenly have a wild west version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas in my head? There’s no way that can happen, this is a Disney movie after all. We should probably expect something more along the lines of Captain Jack Sparrow crazy instead. Either version seems like a good move.

Rumor Has Kevin Costner Being Eyed To Play Jonathan Kent, Superman's Earthly Father

published: 2011-02-21 17:45:20 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Arriving online today I discovered that the big question on everybody's mind was "Who does Zack Snyder want Kevin Costner to play in his Superman reboot?" In my write-up of the story I suggested two characters that the Oscar winner could play - Perry White, the Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Planet, and Jonathan Kent, the man who raised Superman on Earth. Turns out that my second guess may have been right on target. Latino Review is reporting from "well-placed sources" that the role that Costner is wanted for is that of Pa Kent. As the story goes, Jonathan Kent, along with his wife Martha, discover Kal-El's rocket, which crashes to earth in the town of Smallville. Though they know he's not of this Earth, they raise him as their son, giving him the name Clark Kent.

While I still think that Perry White is a better fit, I do like the idea of Costner in the part. Still, it's way, way to early to be saying that Costner will be in the film. The actor isn't even in negotiations for the part yet and, for all we know, he might not even be aware that Snyder is interested in casting him. The point is, if he ends up not doing the movie, don't set yourself up for disappointment.

Is Kevin Costner Up For A Role In Zack Snyder's Superman Reboot?

published: 2011-02-21 13:41:45 Author: Eric Eisenberg

Back during the early 1990s Kevin Costner was one of the biggest movie stars you could land to lead the cast in your movie. Films like Dances With Wolves, The Bodyguard and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves were all box office successes and the actor/director was even taking home Oscars. In recent years, however, his fortune hasn't be so strong. Averaging only about one film per year, his most successful movie in the last decade was Open Range, which only pulled in an average sum of $58 million. Should he choose to sign on, however, he could be headed back to $100 million blockbusters very soon.
Deadline reports that Zack Snyder has a "heightened interest" in casting Costner to play a lead role in the upcoming Superman reboot. The article makes no mention and has no guesses regarding who the actor might play in the comic book film. Set to go into production later this year, the only cast member yet signed on for the film is Henry Cavill who will be playing the Man of Steel.

At this stage in the game it's even hard to guess what role Costner might play. He has done both hero and villain in past films, but what established characters are there that available to be speculated about? If
Lois Lane isn't in the movie, does that mean Perry White, who could be a solid fit for Costner, won't be either? If Supes is still in Smallville, will the veteran actor be playing Jonathan Kent? We simply don't know enough to start asking those kinds of questions.

UPDATED: Glenn Close To Play The Lead In The Susan Boyle Biopic?

published: 2011-02-21 16:19:06 Author: Eric Eisenberg
UPDATE! To no one's surprise, this rumor has been debunked. Glenn Close's reps tell USA Today that it's all malarky. Glenn Close is not playing Susan Boyle.

Here's our original report of this spurious rumor.

Back in 2009 you couldn't talk to three people in a day without two of them talking about Susan Boyle. The homely Scottish woman rocked the world when she performed a rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Misérables on Britain's Got Talent and became an overnight sensation. One five minute YouTube clip managed to expose the ridiculous superficiality of the music industry. But then, like every internet star, the spotlight dimmed and while Boyle certainly still has her millions fans and best selling albums, her story is no longer front page news. Some people still find her timely enough to get a biopic, however, and now they may have landed a star.

That reputable beacon of journalistic integrity known as
The Sun is reporting from an unnamed source that Glenn Close has signed on to play Susan Boyle. Said the source on the casting, "Glenn has played some imposing women in the past including Cruella de Vil and Alex Forrest, who boils the pet rabbit in Fatal Attraction, but SuBo might just be her biggest role yet." The article makes no mention of who will write or direct the project.

Considering that Boyle's appearance is very much a part of her story, I've always wondered about how self-esteem works into casting like this (
The Daily Telegraph previously reported that Robin Williams was up for the part of Boyle). Is Glenn Close comfortable enough with her appearance that she has no problem with someone saying, "You'd be perfect to play Susan Boyle"? Considering that this is The Sun, however, please do keep in mind that there is a 90% chance that this story is fake.

**Tom Hardy Talks Briefly About Playing Bane in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES **UK Poster for LIMITLESS **Kevin Costner Up for “Key Role” in SUPERMAN Reboot

UK Poster for LIMITLESS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 21st, 2011

As most folks take the day off to celebrate our nation’s Presidents (because I’m sure that’s how people are spending their free time: celebrating US Presidents), it’s a bit of a slow news day.  With that in mind, we bring you the UK poster for Limitless.  Even on a slow news day, I would usually skip over this, but the poster makes Bradley Cooper look so creepy that I had to share it with you.  It’s like the folks who designed this poster said, “We can’t find an image of Bradley Cooper and photoshop is broken.  I know!  There’s a new Bradley Cooper wax statue at the local wax figure museum!  Let’s go borrow it!  Chip-chip!  Cheeri-o!” (It’s a British poster and I’m 99% certain that’s how all British people end their conversations and this poster could have only been made by Brits because — 0h, no — I’ve run out of crappy-logic juice).
Hit the jump to check out the poster.  Limitless also stars Abbie Cornish, Anna Friel, and Robert De Niro.  It opens in the US on March 18th and the in UK on March 23rd.
Click over to  Empire to see the UK quad poster, which is just as creepy.

Kevin Costner Up for “Key Role” in SUPERMAN Reboot

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 21st, 2011

While Kevin Costner has had a less-than-stellar track record for the last two decades (although there are some gems like A Perfect World and Open Range), he does deserve some credit for staying away from sequels, remakes, and franchise pictures.  But now it looks like he may be signing on to Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman reboot.  Deadline reports that Costner is up for a “key role” in the picture.  If I had to guess at what the role could be, I’d say it’s either Superman’s birth father Jor-El, surrogate parent Pa Kent, or Daily Planet editor Perry White.  Currently, the only actor cast in the film is Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent.  The film is currently set for release next holiday season.
Costner most recently co-starred in The Company Men.  Last year, we reported that he was planning to get back in the director’s chair for the World War II action-adventure, A Little War of Our Own.

Tom Hardy Talks Briefly About Playing Bane in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

by Jason Barr    Posted: February 21st, 2011

In case anyone, for any reason whatsoever, had concerns that Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises would have a lot in common with Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin (you know, outside of featuring characters named Batman and Bane), Tom Hardy is here to put those fears to rest. In a recent interview with the UK’s Channel 4 talk show Alan Carr: Chatty Man, the actor slated to play the Batman foe confirmed:
“Chris Nolan, again, will revisit that territory entirely so I wouldn’t go by that [Schumacher's Batman and Robin]. Plus, that’s a lot of weight to put on and I’ve got to start shooting in May. So I’ve got to get back up to that size again [presumably "again" referring to his bulked turn in Bronson] and I’ve got to get up to about 13-and-a-half or 14 stone [approx. 200 lbs.]. I’m 12-and-a-bit now [approx. 170 lbs.], so I’ve got three months to do that.”
To check out a video of the interview, hit the jump. Hardy will join Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises on July 20th, 2012.
