"Ferris Bueller's Day Off" Sequel in the Works?

Posted: June 14th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Back in 2007, screenwriter Rick Rapier wrote a spec script for a sequel to "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," called "Ferris Bueller 2: Another Day Off." And he's been shopping it around ever since.

Now, Rapier has updated his Twitter account with news that he's been able to get the script into the hands of some important people. "There is definite interest in my 'Ferris' sequel," he wrote. "Big name production companies that have first-look production deals with Paramount are reading the script. Your readers would know either their names or have seen movies they've produced, some of them classics. We have high hopes that one or more will take an interest, and that Paramount brass will go for it on their advice."

The script revolves around modern-day Bueller, who becomes a successful motivational speaker with the help of Cameron Frye. For more, you can read the first twelve pages of the script here.

While Rapier seems confidant that Paramount will take his script and develop a "Ferris Bueller" sequel, chances are it's never going to happen, especially since director John Hughes passed away two years ago.

Question: Would you like to see a sequel to "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"?

The Weinstein Company To Distribute Madonna's W.E.

published: 2011-06-13 14:48:13 Author: Eric Eisenberg
She may be one of the biggest recording artists of all time, but Madonna has quite the hit-or-miss record when it comes to the movie industry. As an actress she has some pretty interesting titles on her record, including A League of Their Own and Dick Tracy, but she also has disasters like The Next Best Thing and Swept Away listed on her filmography. Lord only knows what that means for her newest writing/directing gig, W.E., but now the Weinstein Company is going to help us find out.

According to a press release, the Harvey and Bob-owned production company has attained the U.S. distribution rights for W.E., which stars Abbie Cornish, Oscar Isaac, James D’Arcy and Andrea Riseborough. A two tiered story described as a romantic drama, the film establishes parallel storylines between King Edward VIII's relationship with American divorcee Wallis Simpson and a modern love story between a married woman and a security guard. Though there is no official release date set just yet, the movie will be coming out this year. Said Madonna about the deal,

"W.E. is about the nature of true love, and the sacrifices and compromises that are often made. I’ve wanted to tell this story for a very long time, and bringing it to life has been a great adventure for me. I’m looking forward to working with Harvey and The Weinstein Company on this film."
It's funny that the Weinsteins would be the ones to handle this their biggest film from last year, The King's Speech, also dealt with King Edward and Miss Simpson. Reading Madonna's quote it seems like they are going a completely different direction with that relationship, however, as The King's Speech kind of made Edward look like a selfish jerk who put his own wants in front of the countries. I also have to wonder if Madonna will explore the whole "pro-Nazi" thing. Something tells me she won't. http://www.cinemablend.com/new/The-Weinstein-Company-To-Distribute-Madonna-s-W-E-25191.html

2 New Images from FRIGHT NIGHT including First Official Look at David Tennant as Peter Vincent

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 11th, 2011 at 7:15 am

Last September, a set photo of David Tenannt in Craig Gillespie’s remake of Fright Night went online.  This week, DreamWorks/Disney are going to be making a major push on the film and they’re kicking it off with the first official image of Tennant as Las Vegas stage magician Peter Vincent.  I’m not sure how Vincent factors into the remake, but in the 1985 original, he was midnight movie host who proclaimed to be a vampire hunter and whose services were called upon by teenager Charlie Brewster to combat Charlie’s bloodsucking new neighbor.
Hit the jump to check out the image of Tennant along with a new image of Charlie (Anton Yelchin) and his mother (Toni Collette).  Be sure to keep checking back this week for more Fright Night stuff as we’ll be posting Steve’s report from the film’s editing bay as well as the first trailer.  Fright Night also stars Colin Farrell, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Imogen Poots.  The film opens in 3D on August 19th.

Cannes Casting Call: Firth and Blunt to Star in Dark Comedy; Holmes to Star in RESPONSIBLE ADULTS; Quaid Joins THE WORDS; 4 Board IDEA IN AMERICA

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 11th, 2011 at 7:56 am

As the Cannes Film Festival heats up, plenty of casting deals are getting done.  We’ve combined some of the latest casting stories into one handy article for your viewing pleasure.  First up, Colin Firth and Emily Blunt have signed on to star in a dark comedy from director Dante Ariola and written by Becky Johnston.  According to Deadline, “Firth plays a man who hates his job and is hated by his ex-wife and son. Feeling he missed his one shot at living the dream, he fakes his death and buys a new identity. Along the way he meets a woman (Blunt) who is also trying to leave her past behind. The pair break into empty homes and pose as the absent owners. The two find a kindship despite all the lying.”  I’m a little giddy at the thought of Firth and Blunt playing off each other so hopefully we’ll see this project sooner rather than later.

New Details on Walter Hill’s HEADSHOT; Another 80s Throwback for Stallone

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 11th, 201 at 8:27 am

New details have emerged on Walter Hill’s upcoming action flick Headshot starring Sylvester Stallone and Thomas Jane.  As we previously reported, the story centers on a hitman (Stallone) and an NYPD detective (Jane) who team up to exact revenge.  According to What’s Playing, the film will be, much like Stallone’s The Expendables, a throwback to 80s buddy action flicks.  Hill reportedly signed on for the flick because it reminded him of the films he used to make like 48 Hrs. and Red Heat.  WP also says that Hill has fine-tuned Alessandro Camon’s script and improved the “cool” dialogue and central relationship between Stallone and Jane’s characters.
I desperately hope that this film is better than Expendables and having Hill behind the camera gives me that hope.  However, it’s interesting/sad that ever since 2006’s Rocky Balboa, Stallone has essentially acknowledged that he’s a relic and that the only way his stardom can continue is if he can transport audiences back to when he was actually a star.

Fox Passes on LOCKE & KEY Series, Will Retool Ethan Hawke’s EXIT STRATEGY

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: May 11th, 2011 at 9:47 am

Last night came a barrage of news from the Fox network with infuriating news of cancellation of The Chicago Code, Lie to Me and many more along. Of course, out with the “bad” and in the with the hopefully good meant that J.J. Abrams Alcatraz got picked up along with a few other new series for the fall. Well, now we have word on a couple of shows that didn’t quite make the cut as EW learned yesterday that the network passed on Locke & Key, the adaptation of the comic book series from Joe Hill. Despite having names like Steven Spielberg, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci behind it, apparently the pilot just didn’t deliver. There was talk of a limited series maybe coming together instead of a full fledged series, but those hopes have since been dashed by Deadline.
In addition, it appears that another series at Fox, Exit Strategy starring Ethan Hawke, may be retooled in order to be picked up later. The potential series would focus on a team of five experts associated with the CIA and led by Hawke who are deployed when an operation goes bad to extract those in danger before it’s too late. Fox executives apparently thought there was too much action and not enough character development and substance, so there’s a chance it could still get ordered to series down the road. There will be plenty more news on new Fox series and other networks attempts for fall television coming soon so stay tuned.

Disney has released a new trailer for Rob Marshall’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. I want to be excited for this flick but I still have mixed feelings on it. On the one hand, I can’t believe that the plot is yet again “Jack must get the Black Pearl back from another pirate.” But on the other hand, once the Pirates‘ theme music kicked in near the end of the trailer, I suddenly became pumped to return to this crazy world and see more adventure on the high seas. There are some good jokes in the trailer, some imaginative designs, and I hope that this movie delivers.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer along with two new images. Pirates of the Caribbean stars Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, and Geoffrey Rush. It opens in 3D on May 20th.

Julianne Moore Joins Jeff Bridges in THE SEVENTH SON
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 21st, 2011
Julianne Moore has joined Jeff Bridges in Sergey Bodrov’s The Seventh Son. The film is an adaptation of the young adult novel The Last Apprentice and follows a young exorcist-in-training who can see and hear ghosts and smell death. Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Moore will play Mother Malkin, “the most sinister of witches who uses blood magic.” As we previously reported, Bridges will play Exorcist Master Gregory, aka “The Spook”. Alex Pettyfer and Jennifer Lawrence were both offered roles in The Seventh Son, but they have reportedly passed on the flick.

While Moore was overlooked in the awards race for her great performance in The Kids Are All Right, she’s still been picking up a slew of new roles. In the past two months, she’s signed on to the vampire thriller Innocence, Paul Weitz’ adaptation of Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, and she’ll play Sarah Palin in the HBO movie Game Change. Moore will next be seen in the romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. with Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling. Hit the jump for a synopsis of The Last Apprentice.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt NOT Playing Alberto Falcone in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES?
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 21st, 2011
joseph-gordon-levitt-alberto-falcone-slice-01
When Joseph Gordon-Levitt entered talks to join The Dark Knight Rises, it kicked off heavy speculation on which role he would play. That sweet speculation even glided across the villain of Alberto Falcone aka “Holiday Killer” and this past weekend, Variety reported that a Batman rumor turned out to be true. But now EW is pumping the breaks and saying that Gordon-Levitt is in the film but not playing Falcone and I personally couldn’t be happier. I’m overjoyed not because I have anything against the character, but because now the empty rumor-mongering can continue and people can say which role they think Gordon-Levitt would be good for even though they have no idea how Christopher Nolan plans to interpret a pre-existing character from the comics.

Filming on The Dark Knight Rises begins in May and the film is set for a July 20, 2012 release date. Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman will return to the franchise, and they’ll be joined by Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, Tom Hardy as Bane, as well as Juno Temple and possibly Marion Cotillard.

The Dark Knight Rises Gets Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the Holiday Killer

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is The Holiday KillerThe plan was to keep Joseph Gordon-Levitt's role in director Christopher Nolan's upcoming sequel The Dark Knight Rises a secret. The actor was confirmed to be involved with the project on Friday. Now, an insider from Christopher Nolan's camp has stepped forward to reveal more information about this trilogy ending sequel.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be playing Alberto Falcone, aka The Holiday Killer. The character figured heavily in the original comic book story The Long Halloween, in which Alberto, refused a place at his father's side in the Gotham Mafia, goes on a Halloween killing spree. He then continues to pop up on various holidays, taking out members of the criminal underworld. He is captured by Bruce Wayne after murdering Sal Maroni.

Tom Wilkinson portrayed Alberto's Mafia chieftain father Carmine Falcone in Batman Begins, which brings this trilogy full-circle. It is not clear at this point how The Holiday Killer will figure into the storyline of The Dark Knight Rises, which also includes villains Catwoman and Bane.

At this time, Christopher Nolan is continuing to fine-tune his script. Production on The Dark Knight Rises is set to begin later this year.

The Dark Knight Rises comes to theaters July 20th, 2012 and stars Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

Sundance 2011: TAKE SHELTER Review

take-shelter-image-michael-shannon-slice-01
Before the screening of Take Shelter, writer-director Jeff Nichols explained to the audience that he was attempting to tap into an emotion of dread and anxiety.  For the first act of his movie, he’s wildly successful at capturing that feeling.  Vivid, nightmarish dream sequences set the film up as a paranoid thriller.  But then Nichols hits the breaks, stops the dreams, and the tension slowly leaves the picture as it moves at a glacial pace.  While he’s able to eventually pick it back up at the end and come to an interesting conclusion, he is never able to reconnect with his audience.
Take Shelter opens with Curtis (Michael Shannon) having a vision of a storm.  Thick, viscous rain falls from the sky and thunder shakes the landscape.  The vision passes and Curtis goes back to his normal life as a family man with loving wife Sam (Jessica Chastain) and daughter Hannah (Tova Stewart).  But then Curtis tarts to have nightmares.  The nightmares always begin with a storm and end with Curtis waking up in pain and paranoia.  He believes that his nightmares are premonitions of an apocalypse and so he takes to expanding the storm shelter in his backyard.  Desperate to protect his family, Curtis has only two dark options: either he’s wrong and he’s starting to show signs of schizophrenia like his mother (Kathy Baker) or it’s the end of the world.

Trent Reznor to Score David Fincher’s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 8th, 2011

When it was announced that Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame would be doing the music to David Fincher’s The Social Network, audiences began to realize that the film may a bit more than just “the facebook movie”. When the film was released, Reznor’s score was met with wild enthusiasm, and it looks like Fincher liked what he heard as well. Reznor has confirmed that he and his Social Network scoring partner Atticus Ross are doing the score for the director’s next film, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which he’s currently filming in Sweden.
Reznor confirmed the news on a podcast with The New York Times’ Jon Pareles. Fincher’s adaptation of the first book in Steig Larsson’s “Millenium Trilogy” stars The Social Network’s Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgard, and Christopher Plummer. At the moment, Fincher’s on a break from filming in order to promote the Blu-Ray/DVD release of The Social Network (as well as get in some nice pre-Oscar facetime), which hits stores on Tuesday. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out Steve’s exclusive interview with Fincher from last week. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo will hit theaters on December 21st.

First Image of Dennis Quaid in FOOTLOOSE

by Jason Barr    Posted: January 8th, 2011

dennis-quaid-footloose-image-slice
The first image of Dennis Quaid in director Craig Brewer’s (Black Snake Moan) Footloose remake has landed online.  Well, sort of.  To be fair, it’s actually more an image of a television screen with a cat nearby who seems to be none too pleased about having her face all over the Internet.  Nevertheless, it’s still a good sign that a trailer for the film may not be far off.
Briefly, Footloose tells the story of a teen who moves from upbeat Chicago to a small town in which dancing and that darn rock ‘n roll music have been outlawed. In addition to Quaid (who is taking on the role previously played by John Lithgow, Rev. Shaw Moore), the Footloose remake also stars Kenny Wormald as Kevin Bacon’s own Ren MacCormack and Julianne Hough as the object of his affection, Ariel.  Footloose is slated to hit theaters later this year on October 14th.  To check out the image as well as a more detailed synopsis for the 1984 original, hit the jump
Here’s the image [via Brewer's Twitter]:

When teenager Ren and his family move from big-city Chicago to a small town, he’s in for a real case of culture shock. Though he tries hard to fit in, the streetwise Ren can’t quite believe he’s living in a place where rock music and dancing are illegal. There is one small pleasure, however: Ariel, a troubled, but lovely blonde with a jealous boyfriend and a Bible-thumping minister who is responsible for keeping the town dance-free. Ren and his classmates want to do away with this ordinance, especially since the senior prom is around the corner, but only Ren has the courage to initiate a battle to abolish the outmoded ban and revitalize the spirit of the repressed townspeople.

***Director Gary Ross Talks THE HUNGER GAMES ***New Posters for THE GREEN HORNET and DYLAN DOG: DEAD OF NIGHT ***Dennis Quaid Joins BENEATH THE DARKNESS; Sienna Miller and Danny Huston Take on TWO JACKS

Director Gary Ross Talks THE HUNGER GAMES

by Tommy Cook    Posted: December 17th, 2010

Last month, director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) was announced as the director to Suzanne Collins’ acclaimed novel The Hunger Games.  Ross recently sat down with EW to talk about his approach to the adaptation. Ross played rather coy about the project in the interview but did offer up some choice words in regards to the heroine of the novel Katniss:
“What makes Katniss attractive is her strength and her assuredness and her defiance and ultimately her compassion. And I don’t mean just physical strength. I mean a real strength as a human being. She knows her own truth. She feels deeply and fiercely. And this is something that the actress has to bring with her.”
The Hunger Games is part one of a trilogy focusing on an eighteen-year-old girl, who in a dystopian future must fight to the death against various other teenagers (a la Battle Royale). In the wake of Twilight, The Hunger Games has seemingly become the new “it” young adult novel. I must admit that in an effort to remain current – I too have begun to read the novel. I’m only fifty or so pages in the book; but it does show some actual literary value – something of which I couldn’t say about Stephanie Myer’s opus. For more on The Hunger Games, including some quotes from Ross in regards to casting the film as well as an official book synopsis, hit the jump.
With regards to casting, Ross remained cryptic about whether he would be casting an unknown or an established actress in the lead role of Katniss:
“We’ll cast the right person for the part. Lionsgate has been great in the respect that they don’t feel that this needs a movie star in Katniss’ role. The greatest thing about the franchise and the books being the star is that we can cast whomever we want. So we all feel like we’re just going to cast the right person.”
This to me feels like code for semi famous actress whose face you know but whose name you don’t (see Alex Pettyfer in I Am Number Four for proof of this phenomenon). Somewhere in between Amanda Seyfried and Second Girl on the left in [insert title] Michael Bay film. If I were to throw out names, how about Haley Bennett (from Joe Dante’s still unreleased The Hole) or Juno Temple (Year One).
Ross also shot down rumors that Robert Downey Jr. or Hugh Laurie would be appearing in the film:
“No…It would be wrong I think to announce [them] before we’ve actually cast them or spoken to them.”
Anyways, Gary Ross is a fine filmmaker – yes, Seabiscuit is a bit schmaltzy but Pleasantville is more than enjoyable. It should be interesting to watch the filmmaker of such “heartwarming” films, try his hand at the darker and more disturbing undertones of the novel.
Book Synopsis of The Hunger Games from The School Library Journal via Amazon:
In a not-too-distant future, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss’ young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district’s female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems to have all the fighting skills of a lump of bread dough, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives.

New Posters for THE GREEN HORNET and DYLAN DOG: DEAD OF NIGHT

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 17th, 2010

New posters have gone online for The Green Hornet and Dylan Dog: Dead of Night.  The poster Green Hornet isn’t all that spectacular, but I’m hearing positive buzz on the film, which stars Seth Rogen and Jay Chou as guys who masquerade as heroes masquerading as villains.  They also wear masks.  As for Dylan Dog, it’s an Italian teaser poster with the letters “DD” on it instead of the full title.  However, due to the character’s popularity in Italy (the film is based on one of the best-selling Italian comic books), that shouldn’t be a problem.  If the film shows up in the U.S., the marketing is going to have to be a bit more explicit.
Hit the jump to check out both posters.  Directed by Michel Gondry (Be Kind Rewind), The Green Hornet also stars Christoph Waltz and Cameron Diaz.  The film opens in 3D on January 14, 2011.  Dylan Dog: Dead of Night was directed by Kevin Munroe (TMNT) and stars Brandon Routh and Sam Huntington.  It’s set to open in Italy in March.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Green Hornet:
Britt Reid (Seth Rogen), son and heir to Los Angeles’ largest newspaper fortune, is a rich, spoiled playboy who has been happy to maintain a direction-less existence. When his father James Reid (Tom Wilkinson) dies, Britt meets an impressive and resourceful company employee, Kato (Jay Chou). They realize that they have the resources to do something worthwhile with their lives and finally step out of James Reid’s shadow. Kato builds the ultimate weapon, The Black Beauty, an indestructible car with every weapon imaginable and Britt decides that in order to be heroes, they will pose as villains. With the help of Britt’s new secretary, Lenore Case (Cameron Diaz), they learn that the chief criminal in the city is named Benjamin Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz). He has united all the gangs under his power, and he quickly sees that the Green Hornet is a direct threat to the prosperous criminal underworld he controls.

Dennis Quaid Joins BENEATH THE DARKNESS; Sienna Miller and Danny Huston Take on TWO JACKS

by Jason Barr    Posted: December 17th, 2010

We have a few bits of casting news for you this morning.  First up, Dennis Quaid has signed on to star in the indie thriller Beneath the Darkness.  Directed by Martin Guigui, Darkness is set in Texas (where it is currently shooting) and focuses on a teen who attempts to expose the deep, dark secrets of a house owned by Quaid’s character.  Speaking of which, per Variety, the actor is set to make a turn as a well-respected mortician (the best kind of mortician, in my opinion).  Quaid joins a cast that features Aimee Teegarden, Tony Oller, and Stephen Lunsford.
Next up, Sienna Miller and Danny Huston have agreed to take on Bernard Rose’s (Candyman) indie drama Two Jacks.  Based on the Tolstoy short story The Two Hussars, Jacks tells the story of an aging film director who returns to Hollywood to earn financing for his new project.  According to Variety, the director’s return is filled with “a series of wild adventures, in which he boozes, seduces a beautiful woman and fights with studio execs, winning the money he needs in a poker game.”  Given that the film spans two generations of one family, the project will also flash-forward twenty years later to focus on said director’s son (played by Jack Huston of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire) as he attempts to follow in his father’s directorial footsteps.  No details regarding Miller or Huston’s roles are available as of now.
