Ethan Hawke to Cameo in TOTAL RECALL Remake

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 10th, 2011

Ethan Hawke has joined Len Wiseman’s upcoming remake of Total Recall.  The film stars Colin Farrell as a factory worker who begins to believe he’s a spy for either the nation stat Euromerica or New Shanghai, but he doesn’t know which.  The movie is based on the Philip K. Dick story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” and was loosely adapted back in 1990 as an Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie directed by Paul Verhoeven.  The movie has ditched the concept of going to Mars because I guess as a country we’ve given up on that dream.
Heat Vision reports that Hawke’s role is being kept under wraps and that it’s a cameo in nature.  I’m not exactly sure why you’d cast Hawke in a cameo when he wasn’t in the original film, but I’m not going to argue against his participation.  The film also stars Bryan Cranston as villain Vilos Cohaagen, and Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel are in talks to play the female leads Lori and Melina, respectively.  Total Recall opens August 3, 2012.

Aaron Eckhart, AnnaSophia Robb, and Sean Bean Join Ben Hibon’s Dark PETER PAN Re-Imagining

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: May 10th, 2011

There are various Peter Pan re-imaginings scooting their way through development.  There’s the terrible-sounding prequel Pan that stars Channing Tatum and sets Peter and Captain Hook as brothers.  Disney is considering the a promising adaptation of Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson’s Peter and the Starcatchers, which has Peter and the Lost Boys as the pirates.  And then there’s my favorite among the adaptations—an action-thriller, also titled Pan, directed by Ben Hibon.  If you’re not familiar with Hibon, he directed the beautiful animated sequence in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1Pan was originally set up as a directing vehicle for Guillermo del Toro, but Hibon came on board to helm the picture last November.  The story is a dark re-imagining of J.M. Barrie’s tale which has Captain Hook as a haunted former police detective in pursuit of a childlike kidnapper.
Now the first cast members have been revealed and it’s an exciting line-up: Aaron Eckhart, Sean Bean, and AnnaSophia Robb.  Hit the jump for more details on their characters.

Casting Call: Alec Baldwin Drops out of ROCK OF AGES; Jean Reno Joins I, ALEX CROSS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 10th, 2011

This afternoon we have some casting and some un-casting to report.  In un-casting news, THR reports that Alec Baldwin has dropped out of Adam Shankman’s musical Rock of Ages.  You may recall Baldwin dropped out of Men in Black III to do Rock of Ages back in March.  Baldwin was set to play “Dennis Dupree, the owner of the Bourbon Room, the Sunset Boulevard nightclub at the center of the movie.”  No reason has been given for Baldwin’s departure, although it’s possible there was a scheduling conflict with Woody Allen’s upcoming comedy.  While it’s an unfortunate loss for the project, Rock of Ages isn’t lacking for stars since the cast features Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Malin Akerman, Bryan Cranston, Mary J. Blige, Julianne Hough, and newcomer Diego Boneta.  Rock of Ages is set to open on June 1, 2012.
Hit the jump for casting news regarding I, Alex Cross.

The newest residents of Michael J. Bassett's world of Silent Hill: Revelation 3D are Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix Trilogy, Memento, Unthinkable, Chocolat) who will play "Claudia Wolf" and Malcolm McDowell (Easy A, Entourage, A Clockwork Orange) as "Leonard Wolf." Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is currently lensing in Toronto and produced by Samuel Hadida and Don Carmody.

Moss and McDowell join rising star Adelaide Clemens (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Vampire, Mad Max: Fury Road) and Kit Harington (HBO's upcoming series Game of Thrones); and returning Silent Hill residents Radha Mitchell (The Crazies, Surrogates), Sean Bean (HBO's upcoming series Game of Thrones, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Lightning Thief, Lord of the Rings), and Deborah Kara Unger (Shake Hands with the Devil, 88 Minutes).

Hadida said: "Carrie has displayed her enormous talent across all genres - from The Matrix Trilogy to Memento - and we are delighted for her to join the world of Silent Hill. She will certainly bring a new level of excitement to fans of the videogame franchise."

McDowell will pay tribute to Stanley Kubrick at the 2011 Festival de Cannes this May, by screening seven of the famed director's films in fully restored condition.

Director Michael J. Bassett said: "Malcolm is quite simply an icon of modern cinema and I've been a fan since I was a teenager when I managed to see A Clockwork Orange. He has an amazing ability to bring new and unexpected dimensions to his characters and I know he will bring something unique and disturbing to Silent Hill."

Hadida and Carmody most recently produced Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D starring Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, and Wentworth Miller. Past collaborations include Resident Evil: Apocalypse and the earlier Silent Hill.

Lionsgate is handling international sales on Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, which is based on the acclaimed survival horror videogame franchise by Konami and is the sequel to Hadida and Carmody's earlier Silent Hill directed by Christophe Gans. For years, Heather Mason (Clemens) and her father (Sean Bean) have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn't fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by terrifying nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she's not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.

Drew Barrymore to Helm Romantic Comedy HOW TO BE SINGLE
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 15th, 2011
Actress/producer/director Drew Barrymore is poised to helm her second feature film with an adaptation of Liz Tuccillo’s novel How to Be Single. The New Line romantic comedy follows the “love lives and break-ups of a group of New Yorkers over the span of ten years.” THR reports that Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn (Valentine’s Day) will script the adaptation.

This marks a reunion of sorts for the team that put together last year’s He’s Just Not That Into You, with Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen producing, and the screenwriting team of Silverstein and Kohn once again writing the adaptation. Barrymore made her directorial debut with 2009’s Whip It starring Ellen Page and Kristin Wiig, which was met with rather warm critical praise. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel by Liz Tuccillo.

Director Paul Feig Developing a Comedy for Jon Hamm
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: March 15th, 2011
I hate Jon Hamm. He’s devastatingly handsome, a fantastic dramatic actor, and — as those who have seen/heard Hamm on SNL, 30 Rock, or Doug Benson’s I Love Movies podcast can attest — a very funny man. What a jerk. Yet director Paul Feig, who worked with Hamm on the upcoming wedding comedy Bridesmaids, finds these qualities endearing. A working cut of Bridemsaids just premiered at SXSW (to positive reception), where Feig revealed to 24 Frames he is working on a new project to capitalize on Hamm’s comic gifts:

“[Hamm] is such a comedy nerd. He will quote lines from Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy. You’re quoting something even I can’t quote! He’s always wanted to do comedy. One of the next things I’m developing a project for him to star in. I think he’s so funny. He’s like Cary Grant to me.”

As the creator of Freaks and Geeks and frequent episodic director of Arrested Development and The Office, Feig too is overflowing with comic credibility. Feig even directed a season one episode of Mad Men, to prove that Hamm isn’t the only one who goes both ways. We don’t know the logline or even the development stage of the project — but based on personnel alone, I’m all in. Bridesmaids opens May 13.

"30 Days of Night" Director in Talks for "Daredevil 2"
Posted: March 16th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

David Slade (Twilight Saga: Eclipse, 30 Days of Night, Hard Candy) is in talks to direct 20th Century Fox's upcoming "Daredevil" movie, which will pick up where Ben Affleck's 2003 film left off. Affleck is not involved with the new movie.

THR says that the studio has yet to hire a writer, but we previously reported that David Scarpa (The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Last Castle) has been in negotiations to continue the franchise.

Sources say the new story line will be the adaptation of Frank Miller's "Born Again" comic series, which had the Kingpin learn the identity of the superhero and begin to systematically destroy his life.

"Scream 5" is Already in the Works
Posted: March 16th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

STYD is reporting that Dimension Films is searching for writers to pen their fifth "Scream" installment, despite that the fourth film has yet to hit theaters. This confirms that the studio is interested in developing an entire new trilogy.

When "Scream 4" was announced, Kevin Williamson (Scream, Scream 2) was writing the second trilogy, but was recently replaced by Ehren Kruger (Scream 3). Since Dimension is looking for new writers, it looks like neither Williamson or Kruger will be back.

Craven recently commented on the studio replacing Williamson. He said: "In some ways it's a Wes Craven film, and in way it's not entirely, because it's not a script I have control of. It's ultimately controlled by what the studio wants in the script. My job is much more bringing whatever experience and expertise and creativity I can. Look, there was a bumpy period when things shifted over from Kevin to Ehren. I signed up to do a script by Kevin and unfortunately that didn’t go all the way through the shooting. But it certainly is Kevin's script and concept and ideas and themes."

He added that if the studio wants him to direct the sixth film, he'll would be willing to do it.

Ben Stiller Says "Zoolander 2" is Already Filming
Posted: March 16th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Fans have been waiting for a "Zoolander" sequel for years, but Paramount Pictures never felt comfortable investing in a follow-up to a movie that never became a major hit. But then Justin Theroux (Iron Man 2, Tropic Thunder) wrote a script for "Zoolander 2" and things started moving forward.

Now in an interview with Closer magazine, Ben Stiller has revealed that the sequel is already in production. "We're filming the 'Zoolander' sequel at the moment," he said. "Derek is going to be back bigger and better than before - no catwalk is safe!"

Stiller added that Owen Wilson will also return to reprise his role. "It's ten years later and most of it is set in Europe," he explained. "I don't want to give away too much, but it's basically Derek and Hansel ten years later."

Mark Wahlberg is Now Working on "The Fighter" Sequel
Posted: March 15th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Both Melissa Leo and Christian Bale won Oscars for their performances in "The Fighter," but the film took years to get going, mostly because financiers didn't believe it could become a success.

Now that the film has grossed $118 million on a $25 million budget, Mark Wahlberg has been trying to convince everyone that it's a good idea to make a sequel.

He said: "I got bit by the bug, and now I’m trying to plant the idea in everyone's head that we should do — not five or six [installments] like 'Rocky' — but one more because the big thing that Micky Ward was famous for was his three epic battles with Arturo Gatti. So we're talking about possibly taking one more run at it."

Wahlberg never had trouble getting actors attached to "The Fighter," and doesn't believe he's have trouble this time either. "Everybody had such an amazing experience making the movie that I can't imagine they wouldn't want to go back," he explained. "But it's still kind of in the early stages."

Michael Fassbender Eyes Sean Penn Starrer GENIUS

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 7th, 2011

Following his breakout role in Inglorious Basterds, Michael Fassbender has been courted for a number of films. The latest project that his name has been mentioned with is the adaptation of the National Book Award-winning non-fiction book Max Perkins: Editor of Genius. The film version, titled Genius, is being scripted by John Logan (Gladiator), and Sean Penn has been circling the starring role for some time now.
Perkins worked as a literary editor for such literary greats as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Wolfe. Penn would portray Perkins, while Fassbender is eyeing the role of Wolfe, with whom Perkins shared a complicated relationship in which they fought constantly. The Playlist reports that producer Bill Pohlad is set to direct, and the filmmakers are looking to get the project going soon, so expect official casting announcements sooner rather than later. Fassbender is currently filming X-Men: First Class with director Matthew Vaughn and will next be seen in Jane Eyre.

Gary Ross Talks THE HUNGER GAMES; Says Film Will Be PG-13

by Bill Graham    Posted: January 7th, 2011

Sometimes people forget the target audiences of feature films and the novels that inspired them. Suzanne Collins’ acclaimed and best selling trilogy of novels are marketed and sold toward the Young Adult demographic, but older fans have been clamoring for an R-rated adaptation. However, that all changed today when director Gary Ross made it abundantly clear that Hunger Games would not forget the children that have fueled the series. Hit the jump for the full quotes and why this is a win for fans of the books.
Ross talked with Entertainment Weekly about the rating and made it clear the film would be PG-13:
It’s not going to be an R-rated movie because I want the 12- and 13- and 14-year-old-fans to be able to go see it. This book means too much to too many teenagers for it not to be PG-13. It’s their story and they deserve to be able to access it completely.
Ross clearly understands that the core audience of the film are teenagers and won’t create a violent film that forgets that.
Of course, the reason so many people have likely rooted for an R-rating is because adults have devoured the books just as much as the younger audiences it was aimed at. Then again, the film does deal with difficult material. Ross said that Suzanne hasn’t “written in any way an overly graphic book. Even things like the Tracker Jacker sequence, while horrific, it’s the ideas that Suzanne has created that are so harrowing.”
For more on the film and how producer Nina Jacobson reacts to the Twilight comparison, check out the full EW article. What do you think? Are Suzanne Collins’ books ripe for an R-rating or does a PG-13 film fit as well? Let us know in the comments below.

In this apocalyptic environment, the church is losing its grip on the people. There are rumors of a village, hidden in marshland that the plague cannot reach. There is even talk of a necromancer who leads the village and is able to bring the dead back to life. Ulric (Sean Bean), a fearsome knight, is charged by the church to investigate these rumors. He enlists the guidance of a novice monk, Osmund (Eddie Redmayne) to lead him and his band of mercenary soldiers to the marshland, but Osmund has other motives for leaving his monastery. Their journey to the village and events that unfold take them into the heart of darkness and to horrors that will put Osmund’s faith in himself and his love for God to the ultimate test.

First Images from THE LADY Starring Michelle Yeoh

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 20th, 2010

Director Luc Besson has nearly finished filming on the biopic The Lady (née Into the Light) — today brings the first stills from the production.  Michelle Yeoh portrays Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and pro-democracy icon; David Thewlis plays her academic husband, Dr. Michael Aris.  Suu Kyi led the opposition against the Burmese military junta that arrested her in 1989, and spent 15 years of the last 21 years under house arrest.  The film’s title is how the population referred to Suu Kyi (“The Lady”) once Burmese officials banned the utterance of her name.
Suu Kyi was finally freed this November, which gave Yeoh the chance to meet the woman she will play on screen.  Hit the jump to hear Yeoh’s thoughts on the encounter and see the images.
Yeoh told The Guardian:aung_san_suu_kyi_01
“The first thing we did is hug and I thought you are really skinny, man. One of the first things she said was ‘why doesn’t the BBC world service have more music?’
You feel a real sense of calm when you’re with her. She’s a very striking figure. She is so proud of her culture and the best way to show it is with dignity and elegance. She has a glow and an aura about her.”
Besson deemed Suu Kyi “more of a heroine than Joan of Arc.”  The director elaborates on what compelled him to tell her story:
“It is the fight of a woman without any weapons, just her kindness and her mentality. [Suu Kyi] is very Gandhi like.
She says we should have the right to decide our future, we should have the right to express ourselves. She is asking for things we all have and don’t even think about any more.
How often in history do you have a person, a woman, who never curses, never steals anything, never does anything illegal and you put her under house arrest for 24 years, it is just insane.”
Novelist and screenwriter Rebecca Frayn wrote the script.  The Lady opens in 1988, the year Suu Kyi returned to Burma to attend to her sick mother, and closes in 1999, the year Aris died of cancer.
