Ron Howard Explains THE DARK TOWER Delay; Javier Bardem Not Yet Confirmed to Star

by Matt Goldberg  Posted: May 25th, 2011 at 11:02 am

I admire Ron Howard’s for his incredible ambition in trying to adapt Steven King’s The Dark Tower series into a trilogy of films with a TV series as the connective tissue between movies.  I don’t think he’ll be able to pull it off because he’s a bland director who thoughts that The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons needed to be humorless messes that retained all of the stupidity of the novels.
But earlier in May, Universal considered pulling out of The Dark Tower due to budget concerns.  The following week, we reported that Universal was working to bring down the budget and had pushed back the film’s start date.  Howard has now provided an update on the project’s status.  According to Howard, they’re now eyeing a spring 2012 start date but they’re stilling waiting for the green light.  Hit the jump for the full quote from Howard where he also casts doubt on the involvement of Javier Bardem. http://collider.com/dark-tower-ron-howard-delay-javier-bardem/92849/

Exclusive: Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel Officially Cast in TOTAL RECALL; Filming Starts Monday in Toronto [UPDATED]

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: May 25th, 2011 at 3:33 pm

Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Colin Farrell Total Recall remake slice
Last month we heard that Sony Pictures had offered Kate Beckinsale the role of Lori opposite Colin Farrell in their Total Recall remake.  With her husband, Len Wiseman, directing the project and given that they previously collaborated on the Underworld movies, it wasn’t really much of a surprise.  However, sources have now told us that she’s officially signed on and Jessica Biel is going to play the other female lead (Melina).  In addition to the casting news, we’ve been told filming starts Monday in Toronto.
For those playing catch up on the remake, Colin Farrell is set to star, Ethan Hawke has a cameo, and Bryan Cranston is poised to play the villain.  The remake will apparently be closer to Phillip K. Dick’s source material than the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger flick. Farrell plays a factory worker who begins to believe he’s a spy for either the nation stat Euromerica or New Shanghai, but he doesn’t know which.  Hit the jump for a recap of what we know about the film so far.
[Update: Heat Vision reports that Bill Nighy has joined the cast as the enigmatic Quatto, the leader of the resistance.] http://collider.com/kate-beckinsale-jessica-biel-total-recall/92933/

Confirmed: Jeff Bridges to Co-Star with Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D.; Filming in Boston This September

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 25th, 2011 at 2:35 pm

jeff-bridges-ripd-slice
Last month, we reported that Jeff Bridges was in talks to co-star with Ryan Reynolds in the adaptation of the Dark Horse comic series R.I.P.D. The comics are about a group of dead lawmen in the “Rest in Peace Department” who try to keep other dead folks in line.  The Wrap now confirms that Bridges is on board to play Roy Powell, whom producer Neal Moritz described as “a gunslinger who’s been dead for hundreds of years.”  Reynolds plays Powell’s partner, Nick Cruz, a recently murdered cop who’s out for revenge.  Powell was originally set to be played by Zach Galifianakis, but he dropped out over concerns that the project would be delayed if Warner Bros. exercised Reynolds’ option on Green Lantern 2.  However, we have now confirmed that filming is set for mid-September in Boston.
My main concern over this project rests with director Robert Schwentke.  While the action scenes in Red were competent enough, he had a tough time finding the comedy and R.I.P.D. is being billed as a “supernatural comedy”.  In the meantime, we’ll wait and see if Reynolds will move to this film or if he’ll be headed back to Oa.  http://collider.com/ripd-jeff-bridges-ryan-reynolds/92921/

Trailer for Alexander Payne’s THE DESCENDANTS Starring George Clooney

slice_descendants_movie_set_image_george_clooney_01
It may not feature angry 3D sharks, but Alexander Payne’s new film The Descendants might be a better movie.  The film stars George Clooney as the “back-up” parent to two daughters.  He must step up when his wife suffers a serious boating accident off of Waikiki, and then he learns the hard truth that she was cheating on him.  Judging by the trailer, the flick looks to have the same strong character relationships tinged with humor and sadness as seen in Payne’s previous films.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard, Beau Bridges, and Robert Forster.  The Descendants opens December 16th. http://collider.com/descendants-trailer/92891/

The release of David Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a little over six months away.  With that in mind, Sony has begun the film’s marketing campaign and a red-band trailer has already rolled out overseas (although technically it’s just “unrated” because the MPAA doesn’t evaluate international trailers).  While I’ve been checking YouTube to see that trailer, Deadline reports that a domestic green-band trailer is set to arrive Thursday, June 2nd so we won’t have to wait long to get our first look at the film.
Hit the jump for a description of the red-band trailer.  The film stars Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgard, and Christopher Plummer.  The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens December 21st. http://collider.com/girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo-trailer-david-fincher/92858/

It’s been a busy day for movie posters as we’ve already brought you new sheets from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, Real Steel, and Green with Envy just to name a few. Now, we’ve got a few more promos to add to the pile thanks to the release of the first posters from Shark Night 3D and The Descendants. Neither sheet does anything particularly exciting as each seems content in reminding moviegoers that Shark Night 3D has sharks (and bikinis) and that Oscar-winner Alexander Payne’s (Sideways) The Descendants has, well, George Clooney.
For those unaware, David R. Ellis’ (Snakes on a PlaneShark Night 3D stars Sara Paxton, Chris Zylka, and Joel David Moore, and features a group of college friends whose weekend getaway quickly turns sour after an uninvited school of sharks show up. On the other hand, Payne’s The Descendants is the tale of an indifferent husband (Clooney) who is forced to reevaluate his life after his wife is involved in a boating accident. Fox Searchlight is currently eyeing a December 16th release for the film which promises to be an awards-season contender. Hit the jump to check out the new posters.

Playwright David Auburn to Write Adaptation of THE CASEBOOK OF VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: May 23rd, 2011

Following in the footsteps of vampires and zombies, it looks like Frankenstein may be Hollywood’s next supernatural obsession. Pulitzer-prize winning playwright David Auburn (Proof) has been tapped to adapt Peter Ackroyd’s novel The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein. The story focuses on a young Frankenstein who spends his days experimenting with corpses. Mary Shelly, who wrote the original novel and created the character, appears as a character in Ackroyd’s book alongside her mother. Deadline reports that RT Features and Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures will produce.
This is one of a number of Frankenstein-centered projects currently in development. Summit acquired the rights to Kenneth Oppel’s upcoming novel This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein, Sony is working on a contemporary version of the story, and Guillermo del Toro has been working with Universal on an adaptation for quite some time. "Amityville Horror" Remake Gets Title, Plot and Release Date

Posted: May 11th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Hannibal Classics has announced plans to develop a new "Amityville Horror" movie, which will be called "The Amityville Legacy 3D." It will be based on John G. Jones' "Amityville: The Evil Escapes" book and is being adapted by Andrew Helm and Steve B. Harris. A director has yet to be hired, but shooting is expected to begin this fall for an October 2012 release.

Full "The Amityville Legacy 3D" plot synopsis from press release:

Six priests enter an abandoned home in the middle of an intense thunderstorm. The leader of the group, Father Manfred, quiets the doubting Father Kibbler, the youngest priest. The priests separate and Kibbler follows the sound of laughter into the attic. Inside, flies swarm by the the iconic windows of the Amityville house. The door slams shut and an unseen demon claws at Kibbler. Manfred kicks open the door and battles the demon until it consumes him in fire. The attic erupts but the demon is vanquished -- contained in a weak, but still-alive Manfred.

Thirty years later, we meet Nancy and Michael Evans and their daughter Amanda, a happy family recently touched by tragedy. Nancy's sister Carolyn committed suicide, leaving Nancy and Michael to care for her kids, Brian and Jessica. The Evans family is in the process of moving from the city to live in Carolyn's suburban home, where Nancy hopes to bond with Brian and Jessica. Michael plans to fix up the house, sell it, and move the family back to the city.

Before they settle into the home, the friction between Michael and Jessica threatens to splinter the family. Very soon after their arrival, Nancy begins to sense a palpable, evil presence. She can't seem to sleep through the night due to mysterious and horrifying noises. Their family cat is found in the attic -- dead. Slaughtered. Worse, as a family unit, they have a hard time meshing with Brian and Jessica. Michael becomes consumed with renovating the house, and hires a couple of hard-partying locals, Ant and Sean, to help him. But they are afraid to go in the attic. They know what happened in there.

As Michael's passion turns to obsession, Nancy struggles with her very sanity. She's coming apart at the seams, unhinged by the evil presence that only she seems to feel. She knows it will stop at nothing to get them out of the house. When she finds some letters Carolyn wrote to Father Manfred and Father Kibbler she makes a startling discovery -- Carolyn went through the same thing. Unable to track down Manfred, she locates Kibbler -- but he offers her no help. He is no longer a priest, and only communicated with Carolyn because Manfred no longer could. She begs him to help her find Manfred, and Kibbler finally admits the truth: Manfred is in an insane asylum.

Nancy goes to see Father Manfred and convinces him to help her vanquish the evil spirit. Michael's erratic behavior intensifies as the hauntings escalate, culminating in a horrific attack on one of Jessica's friends and the mysterious disappearance of a local delivery man. And it soon becomes clear that Michael is building an exact replica of the Amityville house. Nancy finally convinces Kibbler and Father Manfred to put aside their bad blood and help her fight the evil spirit and cast it from the house.

But if they think the spirit will go quietly or that they even know the source of its strength, they have another thing coming.

The first clip from director Alexander Payne’s The Descendants has been released. The film stars George Clooney as a wealthy landowner who tries to re-connect with his daughters. The clip really doesn’t reveal much in the way of plot. In fact, it’s pretty much just Clooney running. But Payne hasn’t directed a film since 2004’s Sideways, so any peek of his next flick, however small, is pretty intriguing.
Clooney stars alongside Beau Bridges, Judy Greer, Robert Forster and Matthew Lillard. The Descendants is set to be released on December 16th. Hit the jump to check out the clip.

Woody Harrelson to Play Haymitch in THE HUNGER GAMES

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: May 10th, 2011

I guess it’s time for our daily Hunger Games casting story. It now looks like Woody Harrelson will be taking on the coveted role of Haymitch Abernathy, the only tribute from District 12 to ever win a Hunger Games competition who becomes Katniss’ mentor. John C. Reilly was previously being pursued for the role of the alcoholic Abernathy, but it appears that Harrelson will end up with the part. The actor was previously mentioned for a role in the film back in April, and now Heat Vision confirms his involvement.
Gary Ross is directing the adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ wildly popular book trilogy. Set for release on March 23rd, 2012, The Hunger Games also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Wes Bentley, Elizabeth Banks and Stanley Tucci.  Hit the jump to read a synopsis. .......... http://collider.com/woody-harrelson-the-hunger-games/90040/

Stanley Tucci to Play Caesar Flickerman in THE HUNGER GAMES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted:May 9th, 2011

Stanley Tucci will play interviewer Caesar Flickerman in Gary Ross’ adaptation of The Hunger Games.  Here’s how the press release describes the role:
Caesar Flickerman is utterly familiar to all the citizens of Panem as the host of the Hunger Games. Known for his outrageous appearance and buoyant personality, his upbeat interviews of the 24 tributes – a boy and a girl from each of the country’s 12 districts – are presented on every television in the nation.  He is famous for turning any conversation around to the positive and finding humor in even the most dire circumstances.
It sounds like Tucci is playing the well-worn smarmy announcer character we’ve seen time and time again.  However, I do take comfort in the fact that a talented actor like Tucci has taken the role and will likely bring something new to it.  Hit the jump for the full press release.  The film also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Wes Bentley, and Elizabeth Banks.  The Hunger Games opens March 23, 2012.

Rachel Weisz in Talks for THE BOURNE LEGACY

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: May 10th, 2011

Hot off the heels of the news that Rachel Weisz is in talks to join Sam Raimi’s Oz, The Great and Powerful comes word that the actress is also in talks to star in Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Legacy. Legacy is a reboot of sorts for the Bourne franchise, with Jeremy Renner recently landing the lead role. In Legacy, Weisz would play “an operative from a covert government program that is even more dangerous than the Treadstone brainwashing program that hatched Bourne.”
However, Deadline reports that scheduling conflicts may prevent the actress from joining both films. Apparently Weisz is in “deeper” talks for Bourne than she is with Oz (if there exists an infographic for the levels of “talks” actors are in, I’d very much like to see it). In Oz, Weisz would play the evil witch Theodora, who teams up with Kunis’ character to take over Oz. Raimi is set to go into production on Oz, The Great and Powerful this summer, while The Bourne Legacy is poised to start filming in September. There is a possibility that she could do both films, but nothing’s certain at the moment.

Poised to star are Keifer Sutherland, Gerard Depardieu, Thomas Jane, Jon Lovitz, Johnny Hallyday, Til Schweiger and Eric Cantona, as well as French actors Jean Luc Couchard, Nora Arnezeder and Patrice Cols. The plot is described thusly:

The series of mix-ups and double crosses culminate as the gangs are pit face to face, chasing through Paris.”

Colin Hanks Joins Season Six of DEXTER

by Ethan Anderton   Posted: May 9th, 2011

Years and years ago we simply would’ve known him as Tom Hanks son, but thankfully Colin Hanks has worked hard to create quite a career for himself. Aside from appearing in films like Orange County and King Kong, the younger Hanks has also had quite an impressive career on TV in shows like RoswellMad Men and most recently The Good Guys (even though the series was canceled). Now Hanks is keeping his activity on the small screen alive as TV Line reports the actor will have a major character arc in the forthcoming sixth season of Dexter, which just had its first promo show up online recently as well. Apparently details on his character are being kept underwraps but speculation is already rampant that he’ll end up being this season’s bad guy. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.

Darren Aronofsky May Next Direct Sci-Fi Film HUMAN NATURE Starring George Clooney

by Adam Chitwood  Posted: May 9th, 2011

Just over a month ago, director Darren Aronofsky dropped out of The Wolverine at the last minute. The project, which was set to start filming in March, was left in a state of limbo without a director and with their shooting location of Japan ravaged by a giant earthquake. Now, it looks like Aronofsky is closing in on his next directorial effort following last year’s critical lauded Black Swan.
Vulture reports that Aronofsky is eyeing the sci-fi film Human Nature. The spec script by Jeff Welch, which has been around for 15 years, centers on “man who is cryogenically frozen and wakes up years later to a world in which humans have become pets of another species.” George Clooney is attaching himself to star, with producer Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend) currently budgeting the flick. Focus Features Acquires SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD Starring Steve Carell

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: May 9th, 2011

It looks like Focus Features has nabbed the U.S. rights to the comedic romance Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Written and directed by Lorene Scafaria (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist), the film stars Steve Carell and Keira Knightley and centers on the events surrounding an asteroid spiraling towards Earth, threatening to end all life. Carell plays a man whose wife leaves him as a result of the whole “the world is ending” news, and decides to seek out his high school sweetheart. Knightley stars as Carell’s neighbor who decides to accompany him on his journey.
We previously reported that Adam Brody, Rob Corddry and William Peterson are in talks to join the film as well. THR reports that Focus will handle U.S. distribution on the Indian Paintbrush/Mandate Pictures co-production. Filming begins in Los Angeles this month. And on a side note, previous reports had the title as Seeking a Friend AT the End of the World, but today’s acquisition reports have the “at” replaced by “for.” So, I guess this might be considered a title change, however insignificant it may be.

George Clooney and Grant Heslov to Produce THE $700 BILLION MAN; Clooney Might Direct
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: April 13th, 2011
George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s production company Smoke House Pictures is developing a film about the Wall Street bailout, based on the 2009 Washington Post article “The $700 Billion Man.” Said man is Neel Kashkari, the steward of $700 billion set aside for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) in 2008 to bail out failing banks following economic collapse. The experience wrecked Kashkari. He resigned after 7 months in Washington, D.C. and moved to a remote cabin in Northern California.

According to Variety, Clooney is considering The $700 Billion Man as a possible directing vehicle. Zach Helm (Stranger Than Fiction) will write the script. Read more about the story after the jump.

George Clooney to Direct Wall Street Bailout Film
Posted: April 14th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

George Clooney has signed on to produce a Wall Street bailout film, based on a 2009 Washington Post article called "The $700 Billion Man." Project is being developed as a potential directing vehicle for Clooney.

The article is about TARP mastermind Neel Kashkari, a top official under then-Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, who helped develop the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program which bailed out the big banks following the economic collapse in 2008. Kashkari subsequently left Washington and moved to an isolated cabin in Northern California.

Zach Helm (Stranger Than Fiction) has been tapped to write the movie.

Sony Pictures to Co-Finance "James Bond 23" and "James Bond 24"
Posted: April 14th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Sony Pictures and MGM have announced that they will co-finance and distribute the 23rd "James Bond" movie, which is scheduled to hit theaters on November 9th, 2012. The two studios will also take on the 24th installment as well.

"After successfully working on the re-launch of the James Bond franchise with 'Casino Royale' and 'Quantum of Solace,' we could not be more proud or privileged to continue our association with the talented teams at EON and MGM," said Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal.

When Sony released "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace," the films had record-high grosses for the Bond franchise, with "Casino Royale" taking in $599 million in worldwide ticket sales and "Quantum of Solace" generating $577 million.

Mark Wahlberg May Star in Action-Comedy BAIT AND SWITCH

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 5th, 2011

Universal has picked up Matthew J. O’Neill’s spec script Bait and Switch as a possible starring vehicle for Mark Wahlberg.  According to Variety, Wahlberg will produce along with Scott Stuber, John Jacobs, and Stephen Levinson.  Plot details are being kept under wraps but I hope it concerns straight-laced detective Reginald Bait and his loose-cannon partner Larry Switch.  Then the movie becomes a costume drama.
Wahlberg is about to start shooting on the Seth MacFarlane R-rated comedy Ted with Mila Kunis and Joel McHale.  He’s also attached to star in David O. Russell’s adaptation of the video game Uncharted.

New unofficial set photos from the dark coming-of-age indie Hick and George Clooney’s political drama The Ides of March have gone online.  Hick stars Chloe Moretz as a runaway teen who flees her neglectful parents in Nebraska and tries to make her way in Las Vegas.  The film also stars Blake Lively, Eddie Redmayne, and Juliette Lewis.
As for Clooney’s latest directorial feature, The Ides of March stars Ryan Gosling as a young press spokesman who falls prey to backroom politics.  Clooney will play the candidate who apparently has no problem re-appropriating Shepherd Fairey’s famous Obama sign.  The film also stars Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, and Evan Rachel Wood.  The Ides of March is set for release on October 14th.  Hit the jump to check out the set photos.
