Mark Wahlberg and Allen Hughes’ BROKEN CITY Moves Forward

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: June 27th, 2011

Back in November, we reported that Mark Wahlberg expressed interest in doing a film with Allen Hughes called Broken City. He said that it was “an amazing piece of material” and he hoped to shoot the project towards the end of 2011. Well now Deadline reports that Wahlberg and Hughes are in talks to actually get the film made. Emmett/Furla Films will be financing a $60 million budget for the drama. Wahlberg will play an ex-cop turned private detective who is hired by the mayor to see if the mayor’s wife is cheating on him. When the wife’s lover ends up dead, the private detective becomes embroiled in the mayor’s scandalous affairs.
The script by Brian Tucker landed on the 2008 Black List, so it’s been in the works for a while. However, that 2011 start-date may not be the plan anymore, as the report states that both Wahlberg and Hughes’ reps stress that “this is early going.” Nevertheless, it’s nice to see that things are moving along for what sounds like an intriguing project. http://collider.com/mark-wahlberg-broken-city-allen-hughes-2/99020/

Casting Call: Ed Helms to Star in TRUE NORTH, Jodie Foster Wanted for R.I.P.D.?

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 27th, 2011

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this morning. First up, Jodie Foster is apparently being eyed to star in Robert Schwentke’s adaptation of the Dark Horse comic R.I.P.D. Bloody Disgusting reports that Universal is keen on casting the actress in the role of Proctor. The film stars Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds as deceased lawmen who are a part of the “Rest In Piece Department,” a group that keeps things in line in the afterlife. Foster’s involvement has yet to be confirmed, and she’ll be shooting director Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium later this year so she may not be able to fit the film into her schedule. R.I.P.D. hits theaters on June 28th, 2013.
Additionally, Warner Bros. is developing a comedy vehicle called True North with Ed Helms attached to star. Variety reports that Brian Grazer is producing the film, which centers on a selfish talk show host who is put into a two-year coma following a plane crash. He awakens to find that his appearance has been surgically altered, and works to reconnect with his family and former life. The pitch came from Rob Pearlstein (Matumbo Goldberg). http://collider.com/ed-helms-true-north-jodie-foster-r-i-p-d/98947/

Exclusive: Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel Officially Cast in TOTAL RECALL; Filming Starts Monday in Toronto [UPDATED]

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: May 25th, 2011 at 3:33 pm

Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Colin Farrell Total Recall remake slice
Last month we heard that Sony Pictures had offered Kate Beckinsale the role of Lori opposite Colin Farrell in their Total Recall remake.  With her husband, Len Wiseman, directing the project and given that they previously collaborated on the Underworld movies, it wasn’t really much of a surprise.  However, sources have now told us that she’s officially signed on and Jessica Biel is going to play the other female lead (Melina).  In addition to the casting news, we’ve been told filming starts Monday in Toronto.
For those playing catch up on the remake, Colin Farrell is set to star, Ethan Hawke has a cameo, and Bryan Cranston is poised to play the villain.  The remake will apparently be closer to Phillip K. Dick’s source material than the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger flick. Farrell plays a factory worker who begins to believe he’s a spy for either the nation stat Euromerica or New Shanghai, but he doesn’t know which.  Hit the jump for a recap of what we know about the film so far.
[Update: Heat Vision reports that Bill Nighy has joined the cast as the enigmatic Quatto, the leader of the resistance.] http://collider.com/kate-beckinsale-jessica-biel-total-recall/92933/

Confirmed: Jeff Bridges to Co-Star with Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D.; Filming in Boston This September

Last month, we reported that Jeff Bridges was in talks to co-star with Ryan Reynolds in the adaptation of the Dark Horse comic series R.I.P.D. The comics are about a group of dead lawmen in the “Rest in Peace Department” who try to keep other dead folks in line.  The Wrap now confirms that Bridges is on board to play Roy Powell, whom producer Neal Moritz described as “a gunslinger who’s been dead for hundreds of years.”  Reynolds plays Powell’s partner, Nick Cruz, a recently murdered cop who’s out for revenge.  Powell was originally set to be played by Zach Galifianakis, but he dropped out over concerns that the project would be delayed if Warner Bros. exercised Reynolds’ option on Green Lantern 2.  However, we have now confirmed that filming is set for mid-September in Boston.
My main concern over this project rests with director Robert Schwentke.  While the action scenes in Red were competent enough, he had a tough time finding the comedy and R.I.P.D. is being billed as a “supernatural comedy”.  In the meantime, we’ll wait and see if Reynolds will move to this film or if he’ll be headed back to Oa.  http://collider.com/ripd-jeff-bridges-ryan-reynolds/92921/

Trailer for Alexander Payne’s THE DESCENDANTS Starring George Clooney

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: May 25th, 2011 at 1:34 pm

It may not feature angry 3D sharks, but Alexander Payne’s new film The Descendants might be a better movie.  The film stars George Clooney as the “back-up” parent to two daughters.  He must step up when his wife suffers a serious boating accident off of Waikiki, and then he learns the hard truth that she was cheating on him.  Judging by the trailer, the flick looks to have the same strong character relationships tinged with humor and sadness as seen in Payne’s previous films.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard, Beau Bridges, and Robert Forster.  The Descendants opens December 16th. http://collider.com/descendants-trailer/92891/

Red-Band International Trailer for THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Debuts in Europe; Green-Band Domestic Trailer Launches June 2nd

The release of David Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a little over six months away.  With that in mind, Sony has begun the film’s marketing campaign and a red-band trailer has already rolled out overseas (although technically it’s just “unrated” because the MPAA doesn’t evaluate international trailers).  While I’ve been checking YouTube to see that trailer, Deadline reports that a domestic green-band trailer is set to arrive Thursday, June 2nd so we won’t have to wait long to get our first look at the film.
Hit the jump for a description of the red-band trailer.  The film stars Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgard, and Christopher Plummer.  The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens December 21st. http://collider.com/girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo-trailer-david-fincher/92858/

Jeff Bridges in Talks to Join Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D.

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 28th, 2011

Just recently, Zach Galifianakis was forced to drop out of R.I.P.D. opposite Ryan Reynolds. Well now it looks like Jeff Bridges may be coming aboard the project in his wake. Directed by Robert Schwentke (Red), the supernatural comedy is based on the Dark Horse comic in which dead police officers patrol the underworld. Deadline reports that Bridges is now in talks to join the film following Galifianakis’ departure.
The project has been in development for a while, and speaking to Steve earlier this month Reynolds said that he hopes to shoot it soon. Soon may be a ways off, however, because one of the reasons Galifianakis left the project was fear that Warner Bros. would be exercising their Green Lantern sequel option, forcing Reynolds to shoot Green Lantern 2 later this year, which would push R.I.P.D. back significantly. The casting of Bridges thrills me though; the guy’s comic timing is a thing of beauty. Hopefully things come together at some point to actually get this thing rolling.

Daniel Cudmore, Travis Fimmel, and Andre Braugher Join Billy Bob Thornton and Eva Longoria in THE BAYTOWN DISCO

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 28th, 2011

Daniel Cudmore (Twilight: New Moon), Travis Fimmel (TV’s The Beast), and Andre Braugher (TV’s Men of a Certain Age) have joined Billy Bob Thornton and Eva Longoria in the Southern comedy The Baytown Disco. Directed by Barry Battles, the film follows three brothers who, as usual, get more than they bargained for when they agree to help a woman get her son back from his abusive father. Serinda Swan, Clayne Crawford, Thomas Sangster and Meagan Good also star.
THR reports that Cudmore, Fimmel and Crawford will star as the trio of brothers. The script, by Battles and Griffin Hood, made the 2009 Black List. The Baytown Disco is set to start filming on May 2nd in Louisiana.

The release dates for a couple of Sony Pictures Classics flicks are now known. Director Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In is set to be released in the US in November, with a UK release date of August 26th. The film, an adaptation of Thierry Jonquet’s novel Tarantula, stars Antonio Banderas as a plastic surgeron out for revenge on the man who raped his daughter.
Additionally, Jeff Nichols’ Sundance hit Take Shelter is slated for an October 7th release. Starring Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain, the thriller tells the story of a husband and father trying to figure out if his dreams of an apocalyptic storm are a sign of things to come or a result of his own mental illness. Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Talks to Join THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

by Max Lichtig    Posted: February 1st, 2011

Fresh off the success of his recent collaboration with Christopher Nolan in Inception, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is reportedly in talks to join the cast of The Dark Knight Rises.  Since the former child actor showed he could hold a leading man role all on his own in (500) Days of Summer, his schedule has been piling up. This April, we’ll see Levitt teaming up with Natalie Portman and Rainn Wilson in Hesher. Later this year, Levitt will battle cancer in the comedy Live With It. Next year he’ll join Bruce Willis in the futuristic mob film Looper, and headline the David Koepp (Ghost Town) thriller Premium Rush.
It seems there’s nothing Levitt can’t tackle, but the question of the day is: what will his role be in The Dark Knight Rises? We know Hathaway is set to strap on the Catwoman getup and Tom Hardy will become the brute force known as Bane, but how will Levitt complement this cast? (Deadline’s report is short on details.) Out of all the characters in the Batman universe, which one do you think Levitt should embody?  The Dark Knight Rises opens on July 20, 2012.  Click here for all our previous Batman coverage.

Cinematographer Wally Pfister Talks THE DARK KNIGHT RISES; Says Script is “Phenomenal”

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 1st, 2011

While The Dark Knight Rises doesn’t come out until over a year from now, that doesn’t mean anticipation can’t already be at a fever pitch. A couple of weeks ago, Warner Bros. revealed that Anne Hathaway has landed the role of Selina Kyle/Catwoman, and that previously announced Tom Hardy will be portraying Bane in the Christopher Nolan-directed film. Cinematographer Wally Pfister, who so beautifully filmed the previous two entries in Nolan’s Batman soon-to-be trilogy (as well as Inception) recently talked a bit about reading the script for The Dark Knight Rises, penned by Nolan and his brother Jonathan. When asked how Nolan can top The Dark Knight, Pfister responded thusly:
“I asked the same question. I read the script two weeks ago, and he’s done it. Plain and simple — he’s done it. It’s a phenomenal script. He’s still in the process of cutting it back because it’s a very long script right now, but it’s really phenomenal. And he actually had me go back and wanted me to watch, in IMAX, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight again. When I watched those I had read the script for The Dark Knight Rises and was like, ‘dude, it is a perfect trilogy.’ I think that was his intent, to work off those two pictures — and they are very different pictures. And it’s funny, we all had different opinions about which picture we like better.”
For more from Pfister, including his thoughts on Hathaway as Catwoman, hit the jump.

Javier Bardem Confirms He’s Considering Villain Role in BOND 23; Says New Film Changes the “Whole Dynamic”

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 1st, 2011

On Sunday, we reported that Javier Bardem had been offered a role in Sam Mendes upcoming James Bond film.  At the time, we speculated that Bardem was being offered the part of the villain.  Bardem now confirms that he has been offered the role of Bond’s antagonist but he wants to read the screenplay before he signs on.  Bardem tells the LA Times, “I’m a huge fan of the James Bond saga.  When I was little, I went watching Mr. Connery doing James Bond with my father. Who in the world would think I’d be in one of those movies.”
Hit the jump for what Mendes told Bardem about the role when they met.

Zach Galifianakis in Talks to Star Opposite Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D.

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 1st, 2011

Zach Galifianakis is in talks to star opposite Ryan Reynolds in an adaptation of the Dark Horse comic R.I.P.D. The initialism stands for “Rest in Peace Department,” and the property centers on dead police officers who patrol the underworld.  Reynolds will play Nick Cruz, recently murdered and out for revenge.  Galifianakis would play Roy Powell, whom producer Neal Moritz described as “a gunslinger who’s been dead for hundreds of years.”  Robert Schwentke (Red) is on board as director.  According to 24 Frames, Universal hopes to get R.I.P.D. in front of cameras this summer when Reynolds has a hole in his otherwise very busy schedule.  Reynolds himself implied he might be too busy to star in both R.I.P.D. and Deadpool.  Does forward movement on R.I.P.D. reflect poorly on the prospects of a Deadpool movie?
Galifianakis will next be seen in the May 26 release The Hangover Part II, followed by an appearance as “Hobo Joe” in The Muppet Movie November 23.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of R.I.P.D.
