The Coen Brothers Might Be Making A Music-Intensive Project Their Next Film
by Bill Graham Posted: June 11th, 2011
The Coen brothers have no problem picking and choosing what they want to do next, and might be utilizing music as a major part of their next film. While Joel and Ethan Coen were gathered with Noah Baumbach to discuss film intros at the new Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center in New York, they briefly touched on what appears to be an unannounced project. The Coen brothers have a long list of potential projects but they seem to suggest this unnamed film is what they are working on now. For more on the project and what the Coens had to say, hit the jump.

New COWBOYS & ALIENS Trailer
by Adam Chitwood Posted: June 11th, 2011
A new trailer for Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens has hit the web. This one debuted at last week’s Spike Guys’ Choice Awards, and features a lot of the same footage from previous trailers, but also includes a couple new shots as well. We get our first look at Paul Dano’s character, and we also get a peek at some sort of alien structure. Personally, I’m thrilled that Favreau isn’t giving the whole film away in the marketing. Everything I see from this flick just makes me more excited to finally see it. Starring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, and Paul Dano, Cowboys & Aliens hits theaters on July 29th.

Jeremy Renner to Produce and Star in SLINGSHOT
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: June 11th, 2011
Jeremy Renner recently formed the production company The Combine with Don Handfield. Renner and Handfield announced their first project, a Steve McQueen biopic, in April. Variety reports The Combine’s second project, Slingshot, will likewise center on a real-life figure. Bill Caswell bought a BMW for $500 on Craigslist, then rebuilt it to compete against professionals in the World Rally Championships — Caswell’s team finished third in their class.

Renner is committed to star as Caswell; Handfield will write the screenplay. No director is mentioned, though Handfield is in post-production on his feature directorial debut, the sports drama Touchback, so you have to imagine he’s under consideration. Hit the jump for a recap of Renner’s busy slate.

Robert Zemeckis in Talks to Direct MAJOR MATT MASON in 3D; Tom Hanks Stars
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: June 11th, 2011
Tom Hanks initiated development Major Matt Mason, a feature based on the Mattel astronaut action figure, in 2009. Hanks wrote the screenplay with Graham Yost (who scripted episodes of Hanks-produced miniseries Band of Brothers and The Pacific) and, as a producer with Playtone partner Gary Goetzman, earmarked the lead role for himself. For a director, Hanks is turning to the man who directed him to Oscar nominations in Forrest Gump and Cast Away: Robert Zemeckis.

According to THR, Zemeckis is in talks to direct Major Matt Mason in 3D with a tentative budget over $100 million. We heard recently that Zemeckis’ next project is likely to be Flight, which may shoot as early as the fall. Post-production could occupy Zemeckis through a good portion of 2012, though Major Matt Mason could get in front of cameras next year when schedules align.

Robert Zemeckis’ Next Project Confirmed to Be FLIGHT; Set to Shoot This Fall With Denzel Washington Attached to Star

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 4th, 2011

It looks like after a decade wading in motion-capture films, Robert Zemeckis’ next film will be the live-action drama Flight. The Back to the Future director first entered negotiations to helm the flick back in April, but no one was certain which project he would choose as his next. He’s flirted with the time-travel films Replay and Timeless, and there’s always the ever-elusive Who Framed Roger Rabbit? sequel. Now 24 Frames reports that Zemeckis has firmed up Flight as his next project, with Denzel Washington expected to close his deal to star shortly and filming aimed for the fall.
The plot of Flight centers on an alcoholic/drug addicted pilot who saves a flight in distress, becoming an American hero in the process. The newfound fame comes with an investigation by the FAA to see whether drugs played a factor in the distress, while Washington’s character attempts to turn his life around. Hit the jump for more on Flight and Zemeckis’ other non-motion-capture projects in the works. http://collider.com/robert-zemeckis-flight-denzel-washington/94746/

Legendary Pictures Wants Idris Elba for Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 4th, 2011

Idris Elba (Thor, The Wire) is an actor I’m glad to see in virtually any role. His presence is the only reason I was able to endure 2009′s thriller Obsessed and he is perhaps the number one reason why 2007′s This Christmas has been adopted into my annual holiday fare (yeah, I really just referenced both of those films in the same sentence). While I may be alone in my devotion to This Christmas, it seems as if I’m not the only one who likes seeing Elba land roles as TheWrap reports that Legendary Pictures wants the actor for Guillermo del Toro’s sci-fi project Pacific Rim. In case your memory escapes you, Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam and is a monster flick set within two worlds. Back in March, we laid out some potential plot elements from the film and we now know that Travis Beacham’s script will see humans take on alien invaders by piloting giant robots (or “mecha”). When you potentially combine del Toro, Elba, and giant robotic constructs, you may as well just go ahead and deduct the box office dollars directly from my bank account.
In addition to possibly taking on Pacific Rim, Elba is also rumored to be in contention to play the namesake in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. He is currently filming Ridley Scott’s Prometheus alongside Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender and has a starring role in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance with Nicolas Cage. Those films are due out June 8th and February 17th, 2012 respectively. http://collider.com/idris-elba-pacific-rim/94725/

First Clip for 30 MINUTES OR LESS

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: June 4th, 2011

Columbia has released the first clip for 30 Minutes or Less.  The excerpt focuses on the teacher played by Aziz Ansari, here in his first starring role in a feature.  It captures Ansari’s talent for portraying likeable arrogance by mining the comedic gold that is being mean to kids.  Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride, Nick Swardson, and Dilshad Vadsaria also star in director Ruben Fleischer’s follow-up to Zombieland30 Minutes or Less opens on August 12.  Watch the clip after the jump. http://collider.com/30-minutes-or-less-movie-clip/94685/

Aziz Ansari Tries To Explain The Louisiana Purchase In New 30 Minute Or Less Clip

published: 2011-06-04 10:34:22 Author: Mack Rawden
When I was a little kid, I never thought about my teachers having personal lives. They were just random adults there to teach me math, and whenever one of them was in a bad mood, I always assumed it was directly related to one of my fellow classmate’s poor behavior. Now I have friends who are teachers, and I know they’re just as likely to have screwed-up personal lives as the rest of us. That’s definitely the case here with Aziz Ansari in the new clip from 30 Minutes Or Less.

Annoyed at his students texting during his class, Ansari tries to teach them about the Louisiana Purchase but is interrupted by his buddy Jesse Eisenberg who has a crazy story about what he did last night. It involves masked man, bombs and underhanded schemes. Find out the details in the clip below…
There are a lot of things I love about the above clip, but more than anything else, I’m pleased with the casting. By now, we all know Jesse Eisenberg pulls off the nervous guy well, but Aziz Ansari is also perfect as the wise ass, marginally-apathetic teacher. I love how he handles the text messages, and I love his angry shock at his friend bringing a bomb around children.

30 Minutes Or Less opens on August 12th. It also stars Danny McBride and Nick Swardson as the two idiots who strapped Eisenberg into the bomb suit. If the rest of the movie is as good as this clip, we should all be in for a great summer comedy.

Patricia Arquette Cast In David Arquette-Directed Glutton

published: 2011-06-03 16:14:34 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Much like the Baldwins, the Carradines, the Coppolas, the Cusacks and the Wayans, the Arquette family is well established in the acting world. From David to Patricia to Alexis to Richmond to Rosanna, they've all had at least some success in the movie industry and while their stars aren't as bright as they once were, they still get work on a regular basis and occasionally get to work together. Case in point, Variety is reporting that David Arquette has cast his sister Patricia in his newest directorial effort.

Titled Glutton, the film is a psychological thriller about a 1,200-pound man, played by Abraham Benrubi. Patricia will be playing the man's sister and caretaker while Kacey Barnfield, who is also a new addition to the cast, will play the man's friend and blind neighbor. The project won't be David's first time directing his sister, as he also helmed three episodes of her series Medium. The film will be Patricia's first since 2008's A Single Woman. Production is scheduled to begin next month in the Great White North.

I'll admit to having a weird curiosity about this project. I am curious to see how one makes a movie that is meant to toy with the mind while the main character is a human oddity that can't get out of bed. The article says that the film is "in the vein of Misery," and while I get the connection, at least James Caan could crawl around the floor and try to escape. How they will manage that same level of drama with a character that can't move would be interesting to see.

Steven Soderbergh to Direct Male-Stripper Film MAGIC MIKE Starring and Inspired By Channing Tatum

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 29th, 2011

You may ask yourself, “What would it take to prolong Steven Soderbergh’s retirement from directing?” The answer, apparently, is a movie about male strippers. The Ocean’s Eleven director just committed to helm Magic Mike, starring Channing Tatum. The film is based on Tatum’s experiences as a 19-year-old stripper, and tells “a story of friendship set in the world of male strippers.” Here’s what the director had to say about the project:
“When Channing talked to me about this, I thought it was one of the best ideas I’d ever heard for a movie. I said I wanted in immediately. It’s sexy, funny and shocking. We’re using Saturday Night Fever as our model, so hopefully we’re on the right track.”
Soderbergh has long talked about retiring after filming his Liberace biopic with Michael Douglas, and this doesn’t seem to change things much. Deadline reports that he will squeeze Magic Mike in this fall before he shoots his last two fllms. Hit the jump to see what Tatum has to say about the project, as well as a rundown of Soderbergh’s final films before he heads into retirement.

MEN IN BLACK 3 Set Photos

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 29th, 2011

A couple more set photos have surfaced from the set of Men in Black 3. The film has gone through some very public script issues, but it appears that they sorted everything out. These set photos give another look at Will Smith and Josh Brolin as a young Agent K, following the first batch of set photos from earlier this month. Given the diner setting and the car parked outside, it’s safe to assume this takes place in the 60’s (the film involves Smith’s character traveling back in time to find the young Agent K).
Hit the jump to check out the photos. Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, the film also stars Tommy Lee Jones, Alice Eve, Emma Thompson, Nicole Scherzinger, Rip Torn and Johnny Knoxville.  Men in Black 3 opens in 3D on May 25, 2012.

Sebastian Stan and Socratis Otto Join Amanda Seyfried in GONE

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: April 29th, 2011

Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The First Avenger) and Socratis Otto (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) have been set to join the cast of Gone. Variety reports that the duo will star alongside Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter), Emily Wickersham (I Am Number Four) and Wes Bently (Jonah Hex) in the thriller. The script by Allison Burnett (Fame) centers on “a kidnap survivor (Seyfried) who attempts to find the same killer whom she believes has abducted her sister.”
Heitor Dhalia (Adrift) is set to direct the film, with Summit Entertainment handling distribution. No word on what roles Stan and Otto will take on, but the film was supposed to start filming sometime this month. Stan will next be seen as Steve Rogers’ sidekick Bucky Barnes in Captain America.

Robert Zemeckis in Talks to Direct Time-Travel Film REPLAY

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 29th, 2011

Could Robert Zemeckis finally be returning to live-action? And with a time-travel film to boot? It appears so, as Vulture reports that the director is in ”serious talks” to helm the adaptation of Ken Grimwood’s novel Replay. The thrilling premise centers on a radio journalist in his forties who dies, but awakes back in 1963 in his 18-year-old body with all of his previous memories intact. The kicker? He always dies in 1988, but returns to 1963 to start the whole 25 years over again with every single memory intact and the ability to make different life choices (spouse, kids, etc.)
This sounds like a fantastic concept, and a return to form for the Back to the Future director. Following the demise of his motion-capture Yellow Submarine remake, Zemeckis has been tooling around with a couple of live-action flicks. Most recently, he entered early negotiations to helm Flight with Denzel Washington. Hit the jump for more on both projects, as well which one Zemeckis might film first, and a synopsis of the novel Replay.

Robert Zemeckis Takes FLIGHT With Denzel Washington

by Brendan Bettinger   Posted: April 20th, 2011

After a decade devoted to motion capture, Robert Zemeckis is looking to return to live action for his next film.  Disney’s cancellation of the mo-cap Beatles ode Yellow Submarine surely was a wake up call.   Zemeckis needs time, though, to ease back into the land of the living.  The director flirted with Superman and a Wizard of Oz remake, and the time travel tale Timeless remains a possibility.  And Zemeckis could always revive the Who Framed Roger Rabbit sequel that exists in a constant state of development.
Paramount has added another option, Flight, and it sounds damn promising.  The script by John Gatins (Coach Carter) centers on an alcoholic/drug addict pilot.  And Denzel Washington is “loosely attached” to star.  Details after the break.

Kate Beckinsale Offered Lori in TOTAL RECALL; Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson Up for Melina

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: April 20th, 2011

Sony Pictures has offered Kate Beckinsale  the role of Lori opposite Colin Farrell in their Total Recall remake.  Diane Kruger, Kate Bosworth, and Jessica Biel have each read for the part of Lori.  This is the first time Beckinsale has been linked to the film, though her involvement is no surprise: Beckinsale is slightly married to the director, Len Wiseman.  They previously collaborated on the Underworld movies.
If Beckinsale accepts, Biel has a backup; early reports suggested the actress is after the role of Melina.  Yet that may prove yet another dead end for Ms. Biel.  Deadline hears Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson are “the serious contenders” for the role.  Bryan Cranston is confirmed to play villain Vilos Cohaagen in the remake.  Read more on the story after the jump.

Kate Beckinsale Offered Role in Husband's "Total Recall" Remake

Posted: April 21st, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Deadline has learned that Kate Beckinsale has been offered one of the two female lead role in the upcoming "Total Recall" remake, which stars Colin Farrell and is directed by Beckinsale's husband Len Wiseman (Underworld).

If she accepts, the actress will play Lori, who was portrayed by Sharon Stone in the original 1990 Paul Verhoeven-directed film. Stone played the happy wife of Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who eventually turns against him.

The other female role is of Melina, played by Rachel Ticotin in the original. Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson have emerged as front-runners. Earlier this month, Jessica Biel was offered one of the leads, but apparently it didn't work out.

"Total Recall" will begin shooting next month for a August 3rd, 2012 release.

"The Crow" Reboot May Not Happen Due to Lawsuit

Posted: April 21st, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

We recently reported that Relativity Media is working on "The Crow" reboot and is in talks with Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) to star and Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) to direct. The plan was to begin filming in the fall, but now it looks like that may not happen.

The Weinstein Company has filed a lawsuit again Relativity, claiming there's "a written contract signed by everybody" which gives the Weinsteins exclusive worldwide distribution rights to "The Crow" reboot.

The original was distributed by the Weinsteins at Miramax back in 1994 and grossed $50.6 million domestically. "[Relativity head Ryan] Kavanaugh was not going to honor that contract," said Weinsteins' lawyer Bert Fields. "Apparently, he's going to sell these rights to others. He made a bunch of threats. Some people may submit to that kind of arrogant conduct, but we're not going to do it. If anybody tries to buy these distribution rights in 'The Crow,' they are buying nothing but a lawsuit and they will get sued."

Relativity quickly replied, stating that the lawsuit is nothing more than a threat and it will not interfere with the development of the project.

Robert Zemeckis May Return to Live-Action with "Flight"

Posted: April 21st, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Paramount Pictures is in discussions with Robert Zemeckis to direct "Flight," a live-action film written by John Gatins (Real Steel, Coach Carter).

During the last decade, Zemeckis has focused on animated films like "A Christmas Carol," "Beowulf" and "The Polar Express," but he is better known for live-action movies like "Cast Away," "Forrest Gump," and "Back to the Future."

"Flight" is fictional tale that revolves around a commercial airline pilot named Whip Whitaker. When his plane malfunctions and a crash seems imminent, he saves the day with some heroic flying and manages to land the plane with minimal casualties. He's instantly hailed as a hero, but as an investigation into the cause of the crash unfolds, it becomes clear that he was flying under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

The film is the pilot's journey as he is encouraged to wear a hero label he thinks he doesn't deserve, while the pilot's union and airline try to keep the facts under cover because of the high stakes involved.

Robert Zemeckis in Talks to Direct THE WIZARD OF OZ Remake

by Ramses Flores    Posted: November 16th, 2010

There are some movies that should never be remade.  One of those films is The Wizard of Oz.  However, it looks like nothing is sacred anymore in Hollywood since Warner Bros is now in early talks with Robert Zemeckis to direct a live-action remake of the beloved 1939 classic.  The proposed film will be so true to the classic film that Warner Bros is even planning on using the original script from the movie.  I hope that everyone is in agreement with me when I say that I think that this sounds terrible and completely unnecessary.  You can hit the jump to find out why Warner Bros might go through with the film along with a recap of what other Wizard of Oz films are in the works.

YOUR HIGHNESS Red Band Trailer and 13 Images

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 16th, 2010

The red-band trailer for Your Highness has just been released and it looks every bit as amazing as the film sounds on paper. Directed by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express), the adventure-comedy tells the story of two brothers on a quest to save their kingdom’s princess from an evil wizard before he has sex with her.  Think The Princess Bride meets Superbad. Danny McBride and James Franco star as the two brothers, and are joined on their quest by the hilarious Natalie Portman (remember her digital shorts on SNL?).  Zooey Deschanel plays the princess and Justin Theroux portrays the evil wizard who steals her away.  McBride and his Eastbound and Down writing partner Ben Best wrote the screenplay.
Justin Theroux, who is also a screenwriter (he wrote Tropic Thunder and Iron Man 2), recently sat down with Steve and discussed the film, which he describes as “insane.”  Your Highness hits theaters April 8th, 2011. Hit the jump to check out the trailer, the synopsis, and a bunch of images:

Today is officially “trailer day” as the recent teaser for Pixar’s Cars 2 and the trailer to Jason Statham’s actioner The Mechanic can attest. Next up is the official premier of the trailer to Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood starring the lovely Amanda Seyfried in the titular role. The trailer is actually quite impressive from a visual standpoint, very reminiscent of Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, what with its creepy Hammer-esque designs, and heavily contrasted colors. It goes without saying the film boasts a decidedly Twilight-ish vibe, complete with leading man Shiloh Fernandez doing his best Robert Pattinson impersonation (he even has the hair).
Red Riding Hood also stars Gary Oldman, Lukas Haas and Virginia Madsen, and is set for release March 11, 2011. Hit the jump to see the trailer, the first poster, and the official synopsis:

The upcoming Pete Segal-directed Neighborhood Watch will undergo a re-write by none other than Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (far right, above), who previously penned behind such hits as Pineapple Express and Superbad.   According to Heat Vision, the story “concerns a suburban ‘neighborhood watch’ group, which is actually a front for dads to get some male bonding time away from the family. Things go awry when the group accidentally uncovers a plot bent on destroying the world.”  Hit the jump for more on the project.

New Posters for PAUL and BLACK SWAN

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 16th, 2010

New posters have gone online for Paul and Black Swan.  We brought you the first poster for Paul last week, but this new UK one features a spotlight so bright that it has perfectly smoothed Simon Pegg’s face.  If these two posters let us know anything about the title character, it’s that he’s an alien where the default facial expression is smirking.  Paul opens in the US on March 18, 2011.
There’s also a lovely new poster for Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan.  I finally got to see the film this past weekend and it did not disappoint (look for my full review when the film opens on December 3rd).  While this new poster doesn’t come close to the beauty of the international posters, it’s still worth checking out.  Hit the jump to see both posters.
