Big Beach has culled an eclectic cast to play immortals in the adaptation of Marie Phillips’ Gods Behaving Badly: Christopher Walken (Zeus), John Turturro (Hades), Sharon Stone (Aphrodite), Edie Falco (Artemis), Phylicia Rashad (Demeter), Nelsan Ellis (Dionysus), Gideon Glick (Eros), Henry Zebrowski (Hermes), Rosie Perez (Persephone).  Movieline passes along the official synopsis:

The film tells the story of the Greek Gods, alive and well and living in a brownstone in New York City, as they cross paths with a young couple, Kate and Neil. The intersection of the Gods and the mortals threatens not only the couple’s budding relationship, but the future of everything else.

Alicia Silverstone and Ebon Moss-Bachrach will play the young couple.  Admittedly, this cast would be more impressive in a year that begins 199_.  Regardless, this sounds like a fun project.  Production begins this month in New York on Gods Behaving Badly, the directorial debut of Big Beach co-founder Marc Turtletaub. http://collider.com/christopher-walken-alicia-silverstone-gods-behaving-badly/100597/news

Casting Call: J.B. Smoove Serves THE DICTATOR; Rodrigo Santoro Learns WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING

Hollywood is quickly learning there is no comedy that won’t benefit from the motormouthed presence of J.B. Smoove.  According to THR, The Dictator is the latest film to catch on.  Sacha Baron Cohen stars as a despot who “risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.”  From the photos we’ve seen so far, the dictator looks to be another memorably ostentatious character from the man who gave us Borat.  Little is known about Smoove’s character other than the name, “Usher.”  Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley, and Jason Mantzoukas also star in The Dictator, helmed by Borat/Bruno director Larry Charles.  Megan Fox and John C. Reilly are set for cameos.
Smoove will reprise the role of Leon Black for season eight of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which premieres July 10 on HBO.  The actor will next be seen theatrically in The Sitter (December 9) and We Bought a Zoo (December 23).  In an effort to conquer all screens, Smoove is launching an “original comedy website” under the name TheRuckus.com later this month.

Val Kilmer, Ving Rhames, Luke Goss, and Rebecca Da Costa Join Timebending Thriller SEVEN BELOW

EFish Entertainment has contracted Val Kilmer, Ving Rhames, Luke Goss, and Rebecca Da Costa to star in the independent thriller Seven Below.  Speaking as a sucker for any movie that bends time and space, the logline provided by Variety sounds pretty cool:

“Story centers on a group of strangers brought together when a terrible storm leaves them stranded in a house in the woods where a terrible event transpired exactly 100 years prior. The group seems trapped in a ghostly time warp, and history is repeating itself.”

Kevin Carraway will direct from a script he co-wrote with Lawrence Smith; Warren Ostergard, Brianna, Lee Johnson, and Eric Mark Fisher (“EFish” himself) are producing.  Production was initially scheduled earlier this year in New Mexico before a change in the state tax credits lured EFish to Cincinnati.  The new start date is next month. http://collider.com/val-kilmer-ving-rhames-seven-below/100563/

About a month ago, it was reported that Val Kilmer is starring in a Western called "The First Ride of Wyatt Earp," which is currently filming in California and revolves around an elderly Earp sitting down with a reporter to reflect on the ride that made him a legend.


Now comes word that another Wyatt Earp project is now in the works. The new one is called "wild Guns," which is a Warner Bros picture centering on Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday attempting to free Sitting Bull's kidnapped daughter from a shaman.


Warners just confirmed that it acquired the script for the film from writer TS Nowlin, who also recently sold "Columbus" that McG (Terminator Salvation) is attached to helm.

Tim Robbins May Join Dean Koontz Adaptation Odd Thomas

With Charlie Bartlett star Anton Yelchin and Phil Collins’ suddenly popular daughter Lily already on board for the Dean Koontz adaptation Odd Thomas, the project is hardly lacking in name recognition, but it may be about to pick up some serious artistic credibility as well. Academy Award winner Tim Robbins hasn’t committed yet, but he’s reportedly very interested in the project. A deal could be closed shortly.


The novel and its subsequent sequels follow a short order cook named Odd who sees and regularly communicates with the dead. Along with his partner Stormy, he uses this otherworldly link to solve murders, prevent disasters and hang out with Elvis and other deceased celebrities. I’d probably do the same thing. According to Bloody Disgusting, there’s no word on who Robbins might play, but Yelchin will tackle the lead and Collins his sidekick.


Horror films run the gamut between almost intentionally bad to brilliant. Much of it depends on the screenplay, but the importance of the cast cannot be downplayed. The better the cast, the bigger the budget, the more likely a director will be hired who will treat the subject matter with respect. Mummy director Stephen Summers has already been tapped to helm Odd Thomas. He was in charge of Van Helsing; so, he’s already got a bit of experience with creatures that go bump in the night. Let’s hope this hits theaters with more than just a shriek.

The Dark Knight Rises Shoots in Pittsburgh This Summer


The Dark Knight Rises to shoot in PittsburghDirector Christopher Nolan confirmed earlier today that The Dark Knight Rises will be filmed in Pittsburgh sometime this summer. Here's what Christopher Nolan had to say about the Pennsylvania city in a statement, which also confirmed this will be his last Batman movie as a director.




"Pittsburgh is a beautiful city. We have been able to find everything we were looking for here, and I am excited to spend the summer in Pittsburgh with our final installment of Batman."




Dawn Keezer, the director of the Pittsburgh Film Office, revealed the sequel will shoot in downtown Pittsburgh and adjacent areas for four to six weeks, although it isn't clear when production will start in Pittsburgh. Dawn Keezer also said that the director was lured to the city by its architecture.




"They're still nailing down actual locations but what they really fell in love with was the diversity of architecture and the gorgeous buildings that we still have in Downtown Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas."




The Dark Knight Rises production will be a global affair, with shooting already slated to take place in the United Kingdom, Los Angeles, Bucharest, and Detroit. We reported last week that The Dark Knight Rises will be the last Batman movie directed by Christopher Nolan. Warner Bros. plans to reboot the franchise after The Dark Knight Rises, although Christopher Nolan will remain on board as a producer.


The Dark Knight Rises comes to theaters July 20th, 2012 and stars Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

Almost twenty years ago, Val Kilmer played one of the most famous gunfighters of all time by saddling up as Doc Holliday in 1993’s Tombstone. Now Variety reports that he’s returning to the Western genre to play another legendary lawman in The First Ride of Wyatt Earp. The film is based on a true story and centers on “an elderly Earp sitting down with a reporter to reflect on the ride that made him a legend, when the young marshal rounded up a posse to track down the outlaw who mistakenly murdered the woman he loved.”


While Kilmer is the goods, the same can’t be said of his young and unknown supporting cast, which includes Daniel Booko (Glory Daze), American Idol contestant Diana DeGarmo, Matt Dallas (Kyle XY), and Wilson Bethel. Producers Barry Barnholtz and Jeffrey Schenck reportedly see the project as a “Young Guns for the next generation.” You know, because Young Guns is such a classic. Confirmed: Jennifer Lawrence Will Play Katniss Everdeen in THE HUNGER GAMES

Last week, we reported that Oscar-nominee Jennifer Lawrence had been offered the coveted-role of Katniss Everdeen in Gary Ross’ adaptation of The Hunger Games. We explained that even though the character is 16-years-old in the book, Lionsgate wanted to cast older because they believed it was easier to find a bankable lead actor in his early 20s to play opposite Lawrence.


Now The Wrap is reporting, to the surprise of no one, that Lawrence has taken the role. I haven’t read the books yet but I think Lawrence is a good actress and I’m glad to see her get such a high-profile role. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the book. Back in January we found out that Rachel Taylor, Minka Kelly and Annie Ilonzeh would be our new Charlie’s Angels in the remake of the popular 70’s action series for ABC. Now we have our first unofficial look at the lovely ladies thanks to some photos snapped on the set down in Miami, Florida. In addition to seeing the trio of angels strutting their stuff in some classy white dresses, we also have our first look at Ramon Rodriguez as Bosley, a casting choice that I’m not really all that pleased with to be honest. Anyway, we’ll likely see some photos down the road of the Angels in their action poses, but for now you can check out these first images after the jump:

Anchor Bay has released a trailer and poster for their new crime thriller Kill the Irishman.  The film centers on real-life Irish mobster Danny Greene (played by Ray Stevenson) who decided to stop being a loan shark for the Italian mob and go into business for himself.  Not surprisingly, the mafia didn’t take too kindly to that career change and they tried to blow him up.  A lot.  There are about 14 explosions over the course of this two-and-a-half minute trailer.  However, the film does look like a nice showcase for Stevenson and Stevenson’s mustache.

Here’s the official synopsis for Kill the Irishman:

Over the summer of 1976, thirty-six bombs detonate in the heart of Cleveland while a turf war raged between Irish mobster Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson) and the Italian mafia.  Based on a true story, KILL THE IRISHMAN chronicles Greene’s heroic rise from a tough Cleveland neighborhood to become an enforcer in the local mob.  Turning the tables on loan shark Shondor Birns (Christopher Walken) and allying himself with gangster John Nardi (Vincent D’Onofrio), Greene stops taking orders from the mafia and pursues his own power. First Trailer for Shawn Levy’s REAL STEEL

The first trailer for Shawn Levy’s Real Steel has leaked onto the net and you can check it out after the jump.  Originally the trailer was going to premiere on ESPN tonight, but as is often the case, it leaked early.  As you might have just seen, I visited the editing room of Real Steel earlier this week and saw about ten minutes of the film and interviewed Levy.  I learned that none of the effects in the teaser are final, and the footage you’re about to watch only skims the surface in terms of story and what the movie is about.

I’ll be honest, I think the teaser is decent, but not a home-run.  I say this because after watching ten minutes of footage, there is a lot more to Real Steel than what’s in this teaser and I really think this film is going to surprise audiences when it gets released in October, 2011.  Hit the jump to check it out for yourself and make sure to read my edit bay visit!

A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring.
