Dakota Fanning to Star in MISSISSIPPI WILD; Robert Duvall, Mickey Rourke, and Forest Whitaker in Talks to Co-Star

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 16th, 2011

Dakota Fanning and Ryan Donowho (Bandslam) have signed on to lead the indie thriller Mississippi WildVariety reports that Robert Duvall, Mickey Rourke, and Forest Whitaker are in negotiations to co-star.  The plot follows a teen (Donowho) “who has to go on the run with his girlfriend (Fanning) after stealing diamonds that belong to a local gangster.”  Rourke is being courted for the role of the gangster while Whitaker is in talks to play a gangster who’s after Rourke’s character.  There’s no word yet on who Duvall would play.  Production is scheduled to begin on March 21st in Atlanta.
Fanning recently signed on to star in Girls Night Out, but Variety says she’ll first be starring alongside Emile Hirsch and Stephen Dorff in The Motel Life.  Filming on Life is expected to begin this month.

Taylor Lautner and Michael Bay Team-Up to Auction Script Described as “MR. & MRS. SMITH Meets WANTED”

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 16th, 2011

Taylor Lautner and director Michael Bay have sent out an untitled script to the major studios.  The Twilight actor and Transformers director won’t discuss the story but insiders tell Deadline that “it’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith meets Wanted.“  I’m interpreting this to mean that the movie is about a nihilistic couple who take their orders from a magic quilt, and that the story abruptly ends.”  Or, as is more likely, the movie involves elite assassins.  Huzzah.
Hit the jump for where Mr. & Mrs. Wanted might fit into Lautner’s busy schedule.

Cher to Play Mother Superior in THE THREE STOOGES?

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 16th, 2011

Last December, we reported that Richard Jenkins was the first cast member on board the Farrelly Brothers’ The Three Stooges.  Jenkins was set to play an abusive nun who torments Larry, Moe, and Curly at the orphanage where they grow up.  As a huge Jenkins fans, I thought that was great news.  Now 24 Frames is coming along to slap my enthusiasm in the face by saying that the Farrellys want to cast Cher as Mother Superior, the nun whom the Stooges terrorize.  Now it’s possible that Jenkins’ nun would still be in the movie, but 24 Frames makes no mention of him.  Cher had a cameo in the Farrellys’ 2003 film, Stuck on You.  As someone who has never enjoyed anything I’ve seen Cher do (and that includes Moonstruck), I’m indifferent-at-best about this news.

First Images of Matt Damon on the Set of WE BOUGHT A ZOO

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 17th, 2011

Fresh off of introducing Robert De Niro at last night’s Golden Globe awards, Matt Damon was back on set this morning for Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo and we’ve got the pictures to prove it. Damon was spotted this morning filming scenes for the flick in LA. Directed by Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous), the film stars Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous), Elle Fanning (Somewhere), J.B. Smoove (Date Night) and the recently announced John Michael Higgins (Yes Man).
Based on the memoir by Benjamin Mee, the film tells the story of a man who moves his family to England where he decides to buy and run a zoo following the death of his wife. Hit the jump to check out the images of Damon on set. We Bought a Zoo hits theaters on December 23rd.

Casting News: Robert Duvall to Star in Billy Bob Thorton’s JAYNE MANSFIELD’S CAR; Mark Duplass Joins WELCOME TO PEOPLE

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 17th, 2011

We have a couple of casting stories for you this evening. We previously broke the news that Billy Bob Thorton was heading back to the director’s chair with a script he co-wrote with Tom Epperson called Jayne Mansfield’s Car, and now it looks like the project has found its star. Robert Duvall has signed on to headline the indie project, which Duvall describes as “another Southern tale.” He elaborated on the plot in a conversation with EW
“It’s about a guy in between WWI and WWII who raises a family after his wife left him for an Englishman and moved to England. When the wife dies, she asks to be brought back to Alabama to be buried, and at that point the character hasn’t seen her in 20 or 30 years. The two families — her original family she abandoned and her English family — meet and then things get really interesting.”
Thorton will reportedly star in the film as well, in addition to writing and directing it. Production is scheduled to begin this summer. We recently told you that Michelle Pfieffer would be joining Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks and Olivia Wilde in Alex Kurtzman’s directorial debut Welcome to People, and now it looks like Mark Duplass (Greenberg, co-writer/co-director of Cyrus) has signed on as well. Variety reports that Duplass is set to play a neighbor who shows an interest in Banks’ character. The film tells the story of an estranged son (Pine) who returns home for his father’s funeral and begins to uncover his secret life.  Welcome to People is set to be released sometime in 2012.

***2011 Oscar Preview

2011 Oscar Preview

by Adam Chitwood    Posted:November 26th, 2010

Best Actor

Frontrunners:
Colin Firth – The King’s Speech
James Franco – 127 Hours
Likely to be nominated:
Jesse Eisenberg – The Social Network
Mark Wahlberg – The Fighter
Robert Duvall – Get Low
Outside contenders:
Javier Bardem – Biutiful
Jeff Bridges – True Grit
Ryan Gosling – Blue Valentine
Leonardo DiCaprio – Inception
Yet again we come back to King’s Speech, Social Network, and 127 Hours. Firth was long thought to be the frontrunner by a fairly wide margin, but Franco’s performance has been getting a great deal of attention lately. Eisenberg’s a bit of a long shot; I see the nomination being his consolation this year. Bardem has some serious buzz for his performance, and could be a dark horse. Gosling could very easily garner a nomination given his pedigree and respect in the industry. Again, no one’s seen True Grit, so he’s a bit of a question mark at this point, but it would be neat to see Bridges win two years in a row (only Tom Hanks and Spencer Tracy have accomplished this feat).
