**Justin Long, Jess Weixler, Tyler Labine, and Addison Timlin to Star in LUMPY **Catherine Zeta-Jones to Play Villain in ROCK OF AGES **Trailer for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS **Poster for THE DEVIL’S DOUBLE Starring Dominic Cooper

Justin Long, Jess Weixler, Tyler Labine, and Addison Timlin to Star in LUMPY

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 20th, 2011

Justin Long, Jess Weixler (Teeth), Tyler Labine (Reaper), and Addison Timlin (Californication) will star in the indie LumpyDeadline reports that the story “begins with a wedding in Arizona, where the groom (Long) and bride (Weixler) find their nuptials heightened by their life of the party best man, Lumpy (Labine). That’s until he dies at the end of the evening.” Which I suppose would then make him the death of the party.  Either way, the newlyweds cancel their honeymoon and head to Minneapolis to arrange a funeral, but slowly they discover that perhaps they didn’t know Lumpy as well as they thought.
Michael Landes, Evan Jones, and Shelley Long will co-star in the film, which is the feature directing debut of Ted Koland who also wrote the script.  Filming is currently underway in Minnesota.

Catherine Zeta-Jones to Play Villain in ROCK OF AGES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 20th, 2011

Catherine Zeta-Jones scored an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her work in 2002’s Chicago and now it looks like she’ll be making a return to the musical genre.  THR reports that Zeta-Jones has joined Adam Shankman’s adaptation of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages.  Zeta-Jones will play the film’s villain, a character who isn’t in the Broadway version, but is described by Shankman as “if Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant had a love child. She is this hardcore, moral majority, arch-conservative who wants to shut down rock’n roll in the great city of Los Angeles.”  Shankman says the character was devised as a way to streamline various storylines.
Zeta-Jones, who has been absent from screens the past several years, is a welcome addition to the cast since she can hit the trifecta of acting, singing, and dancing.  She also recently joined Lay the Favorite starring Bruce Willis and Rebecca Hall, as well as the comedy Playing the Field starring Gerard Butler.  Rock of Ages’s cast includes an interesting mix of famous faces (Tom Cruise, Mary J. Blige, Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti, Russell Brand) as well as up-and-comers Diego Gonzalez Boneta and Julianne Hough.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of Rock of Ages, which is set to open on June 1, 2012.

Poster for THE DEVIL’S DOUBLE Starring Dominic Cooper UPDATED

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: April 20th, 2011

the-devils-double-movie-poster-slice-01
Lionsgate has released an eye-catching poster for Lee Tamahori’s upcoming action-drama The Devil’s Double.  The film stars Dominic Cooper in the dual roles of Saddam Hussein’s sadistic son Uday and Uday’s body-double Latif Yahia.  The film played at Sundance and speaking to people who saw it, the general consensus seemed to be that it’s fun and excessive in a Scarface kind of way.  Steve caught the film and thought it was great, saying “if you’re a fan of gangster films, excessive violence, and a crazy story that’s never been told on screen, I definitely recommend The Devil’s Double.” I’m looking forward to seeing it when it hits theaters this summer.
Hit the jump to check out the poster, which I like but think it could use more gold.  The Devil’s Double opens July 29th.  Click here for Steve’s interview with Cooper about the film.
[Update: We've updated the article with the high-resolution version of the poster. Hit the jump to check it out.]

**Amy Adams Offered Role in ROCK OF AGES **Joel Edgerton, Dominic Cooper, Garrett Hedlund, and Luke Evans Testing for Lead in THE BOURNE LEGACY **Michael Shannon and Edgar Ramirez Vying for Villain Role in SUPERMAN Reboot? **Juno Temple Confirmed for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

Amy Adams Offered Role in ROCK OF AGES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 24th, 2011

Amy Adams is reportedly being “heavily courted” to join Adam Shankman’s upcoming musical, Rock of AgesDeadline reports that Adams is being offered the role of a journalist who plans to write a scathing expose of decaent rock star Stacee Jax (played by Tom Cruise) but ends up sleeping with him instead after they do a duet of Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is”.  The role was initially offered to Anne Hathaway, but the scheduling conflicted with her time playing Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises.
Adams previously did some fantastic singing in Enchanted and she’s set to sing again in The Muppets.  If Adams signs on to Rock of Ages, she’ll join not only Cruise, but also Mary J. Blige, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, and Julianne Hough.  Deadline reports that we should know by early next week if Adams has taken the gig.  Rock of Ages is currently set to open on June 1, 2012.

Joel Edgerton, Dominic Cooper, Garrett Hedlund, and Luke Evans Testing for Lead in THE BOURNE LEGACY

by Jason Barr    Posted: March 24th, 2011

With Universal’s The Bourne Legacy staring down the barrel of an August 3, 2012 release, the studio is finally bringing some tangible casting work to the forefront.  Per Deadline, four actors are currently scheduled to screen test for the film’s male lead at the beginning of April: Joel Edgerton (forthcoming remake of The Thing), Dominic Cooper (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy), and Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans).
While the report is quick to mention that the actor eventually cast for the role may fall outside of the four listed here (for example, both Shia LaBeouf and Taylor Kitsch are believed to be in the mix, although neither is expected to test for the role at this time), this news at least gives fans of the franchise an idea of how Universal is approaching writer/director Tony Gilroy’s spin-off installment. It is believed that the studio sees the Bourne franchise itself as being more important to the film’s overall success than a huge name lead to place at the top of its marketing materials. With this in mind, and with production set to get underway later this year, I expect this story to be the tip of the casting iceberg surrounding The Bourne Legacy.

Michael Shannon and Edgar Ramirez Vying for Villain Role in SUPERMAN Reboot?

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: March 24th, 2011

Director Zack Snyder is currently filling out his cast for the upcoming Superman reboot and, unsurprisingly, the rumor mill is heating up with names of actors in line to play the villain in the film. Henry Cavill is set as the Man of Steel himself, with Kevin Costner and Diane Lane poised to play his adoptive parents. Now, Deadline is reporting that the parties-that-be are interested in actor Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire) for the villain. Shannon’s a supremely talented guy, and has gained considerable (and well-deserved) recognition as of late, following his Oscar-nominated turn in Sam Mendes’ Revolutionary Road.
In addition, Latino Review reports that Edgar Ramirez (Carlos) is being eyed for the villain role as well. Exactly which villain Superman will face off against in the film is currently unknown. Now, this being a comic-book movie and all, these casting reports could very well turn out to be simply nothing more than rumor. At this point, no one’s saying for sure. But with production set to start relatively soon on the Christopher Nolan-produced flick, expect more casting announcements/rumors in the coming weeks.

Juno Temple Confirmed for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

by Jason Barr   Posted: March 24th, 2011

Last week, we reported that UK actress Juno Temple (Atonement) was in talks to join Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. As of today, those talks have officially ended as Temple has been confirmed for her role as a “street-smart Gotham girl.” While Variety fails to offer up more details regarding Temple’s character, rumors and speculation are already stacking up on the interwebs (hard to believe, right?) that Temple could be playing any Bat-character from Catwoman-sidekick Holly Robinson to current Batgirl Stephanie Brown.
Just for funsies, feel free to join me after the jump for a quick breakdown of some of Temple’s potential roles. The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters on July 20, 2012.

*Ryan Gosling to Star in LOGAN’S RUN Remake Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn **Anthony Mackie and Dominic Cooper in Talks to Join ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER ***Jennifer Lawrence in Talks to Star in Oliver Stone’s SAVAGES

Ryan Gosling to Star in LOGAN’S RUN Remake Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 10th, 2011

Here’s some awesome news: Ryan Gosling is set to star in Warner Bros’ remake of the sci-fi flick Logan’s Run.  Here’s some more awesome news: Nicolas Winding Refn is set to direct.  Deadline reports that Gosling is eager to reunite with his Drive director and it’s so cool that Warners is giving Refn a tent pole flick.  Carl Erik Rinsch was originally set to direct, but stepped down in November to helm 47 Ronin instead.
Studios have been eager to get Gosling and his “Hey Girl” looks and acting talent into a tent pole flick and while he’s going more mainstream with the rom-com Stupid, Crazy, Love this summer with Steve Carell, this is definitely a big transition for the in-demand actor.  He’s also attached to star in George Clooney’s political drama The Ides of March.  However, while I’m happy for Gosling, I’m even more jazzed about Refn getting the gig.  I became a big fan of the guy after watching the Pusher trilogy and Bronson and I can’t wait to see what he does with Logan’s Run.  For those unfamiliar with Logan’s Run, hit the jump for a synopsis.

Anthony Mackie and Dominic Cooper in Talks to Join ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 10th, 2011

Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) and Dominic Cooper (An Education) are in talks to join Benjamin Walker in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire HunterDeadline reports that Mackie is up for the role of Will, Lincoln’s best friend.  I bet they have great discussions about slavery while they’re in the middle of killing vamps.  As for Cooper, Variety reports that he’s negotiating for the role of Henry, “a mythic, ageless figure who turns Lincoln into an axe-throwing expert slayer of vampires”.  Last week, we reported that Joaquin Phoenix was the front-runner for Henry, but it looks like he’s passed on the part.
Director Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) is clearly going for rising stars in his casting and that’s a smart move since it keeps costs down but by the time the film opens next summer, Mackie and Cooper could be better known.  Hit the jump for more on the two new additions and a brief synopsis.  Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is due out in 3D on June 22, 2012.

Jennifer Lawrence in Talks to Star in Oliver Stone’s SAVAGES

by Jason Barr    Posted: February 10th, 2011

Oscar-nominee Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) is in talks to star in Oliver Stone’s adaptation of the Don Winslow novel Savages. If the deal comes through, Lawrence would play the role of “O,” the double-duty girlfriend of buddy pot growers Ben and Chon. For those unaware, Winslow’s Savages focuses on the aforementioned Ben and Chon as they attempt to quietly enjoy the fruits of their weed labors in Laguna Beach. The Savages screenplay was penned by Winslow alongside Shane Salerno (CBS’ Hawaii Five-O and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem) who is also acting as executive producer on the project alongside Stone and Moritz Borman.
While the roles of Ben and Chon have yet to be cast, Deadline reports that actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Aaron Johnson, Tom Hardy, Garret Hedlund, and James Franco have all met with Stone regarding the characters. With Stone expected to begin shooting Savages this June, we may be hearing more news on the casting front sooner rather than later. For more on the project, hit the jump to check out a synopsis for Winslow’s novel.

New Posters for CEREMONY, HOMEWORK, and THE DEVIL’S DOUBLE

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: January 26th, 2011

ceremony-homework-the-devils-double-poster-slice
We’ve got three posters tonight from films that have hit the festival circuit in the past few months.  Max Winkler’s Ceremony premiered to positive notices at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, led by Michael Angarano, Uma Thurman, Lee Pace.  Like Ceremony, Homework centers around a young writing talent, but wasn’t received quite as well at Sundance despite the affable presence of Freddie Highmore and Emma Thomas. Fellow Sundance entry The Devil’s Double isn’t about youth so much as it’s about Saddam Hussein’s son Uday and his body double Latif Yahia, but by all accounts it’s a solid twist on the gangster genre.  If that sounds interesting, you should definitely check out Steve’s interview with Dominic Cooper, who plays both Uday and Latif in the film.  View all three posters after the break:

Gwyneth Paltrow to Play Marlene Dietrich in Two-Part TV Movie?

by Talia Soghomonian    Posted: December 27th, 2010

gwyneth-paltrow-marlene-dietrich-slice-01
Gwyneth Paltrow is rumored to be kicking off the New Year as “The Blue Angel”, Marlene Dietrich. She is reportedly set to portray the legendary German actress and chanteuse in a two-part TV movie produced by Luc Besson’s newly-acquired EuropaCorp TV.
The project was initiated by the BBC and HBO and is based on Marlene Dietrich, the biography written by Dietrich’s daughter and closest confidante, Maria Riva, according to French magazine Télé 2 Semaines. More details after the jump.
marlene-dietrich-01Adapted by Emmy Award-winning screenwriter Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones’ Diary), Marlene will recount the major turning points in Dietrich’s career, from her early days on the Berlin stage to her collaborations with director Josef Von Sternberg (The Blue Angel, 1930, was her most famous movie) and her subsequent Hollywood success.
From the 1950s until 1975, Dietrich launched a career as a cabaret artist, performing in major cities worldwide. No doubt Paltrow, who has been collecting singing roles lately, will be stretching her vocal cords in the movie as well. After appearing in Glee earlier this year and starring in Country Strong, she is also rumored to join the cast of Rock of Ages.
The name of the actor who will be playing Jean Gabin, the French actor who was also Dietrich’s lover – some say her greatest love — has not yet been revealed, but it apparently is a major French star. (Guillaume Canet, perhaps?)
It is also not clear whether the darker parts of Dietrich’s life will be detailed. While she was notoriously private about her off-screen life, it was also well-known that in her later years she was plagued with problems involving painkiller and alcohol abuse. She spent the last 11 years of her life mostly bedridden in her Parisian apartment until her death in 1992.
Her final on-camera appearance was a cameo role in Just a Gigolo (1979), directed by David Hemmings and starring David Bowie. In 1982, when Maximilian Schell was filming the Academy Award-nominated documentary Marlene, she only allowed her voice to be recorded.
In Paris, she is still referred to as “L’Ange Bleu” (The Blue Angel). Watch the trailer of the movie that made her famous:

Javier Bardem Interview BIUTIFUL

by Christina Radish    Posted: December 27th, 2010

In the drama Biutiful, actor Javier Bardem gives a complex, conflicted and multi-layered performance as Uxbal, a man on a tragic journey to reconcile the love for his children with the criminal underworld he has gotten caught up in. In Barcelona, his livelihood is earned by less than savory means, but when he is faced with his own mortality, he set out to find redemption and seeks solace in the sacrifices he is willing to make for the ones he loves.
At the film’s press day, Bardem talked about playing a role with such emotional intensity, working so closely with filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu (read an interview with Inarritu here), how being an actor enables him to see the world with different eyes, and how he prefers to play multi-layers characters. Check out what he had to say after the jump:
Question: What was it that really attracted you to Uxbal and made you want to play him?
JAVIER BARDEM: Many things. I’m a huge fan of the director, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and his work, and I knew he was going to be an amazing actor’s director, based on the performances that I saw in his movies. But, more important than that, because I’m not the kind of actor that gets crazy with names, what draws me toward a project is the material itself. This script was beautifully written by him and the character was very complex. There were so many layers to convey that I knew it was going to be a hard task and a rewarding one.
How did you establish this complex character?
BARDEM: On this movie, Alejandro and I were holding each other’s hands and we climbed the highest mountain that we’ve ever climbed. For him, it was new to have only one actor, for five months. And for me, it was new to have a character like this, for five months. So, we really had to back each other and be aware that it was going to be a very intense journey, but a rewarding one, creatively speaking. The themes we were talking about are important. We knew that. That’s where the whole focus was. It was worth it, to make this journey, and we survived.
After this amazing performance, has it made you see life differently?
BARDEM: The good thing about being an actor, and the gift of being an actor, is that you are beautifully forced to see the world with different eyes. Death, for Uxbal, is not the same for someone else. For Uxbal, it’s a wake-up call for him to realize and re-evaluate his life. You cannot get attached to what that character feels about some issues. You have to pull yourself away and be him, but you know that you are being somebody else who’s not you. It never changed my idea of death, but we all understand things intellectually. We hear the news, we read the papers, we see people from the street and we understand the world, but the actor has the obligation to experience it. It’s very lucky for me to have had the chance to be in that place and pretend that. In pretending, I was able to be there, for real. It’s not that I know how it feels, but I know that experience in a very emotional way. That’s different from knowing it intellectually.
For a film with this level of emotional intensity, how do you maintain that over a shoot that’s five months long?
BARDEM: I don’t know how you do it. I just did it, but I don’t know how to do it.
Did it help that this film was done chronologically?
BARDEM: Yeah, that helped a lot. Otherwise, it would have been too crazy to be able to go through that journey randomly. That was one of the great luxuries of this shoot. I also had the whole crew with me. Everybody was on the journey together.
What was it like to work with Maricel Álvarez, who played Marambra?
BARDEM: She’s an actress, but it was the first time that she’d done a movie. She was very nervous, but she did a great job. She’s the opposite of her character. She’s very clear and rational and healthy, mentally, emotionally and physically. And then, they would call action and she would turn into this monster. It was great. Good actors are good actors, wherever they are. It doesn’t matter if it’s TV, theater, the circus or movies. I had the chance to work with some of the best actors in this film. The relationship is based on pain and passion. All of these extreme situations cannot sustain a relationship. It’s like a Greek tragedy. This person has to overcome a very strong circumstance to find grace, compassion, forgiveness and love.
What do you think about the themes that Alejandro is presenting with this film?
BARDEM: We are speaking a different language here. This is not a movie that’s so easy to translate. It’s not an easy movie to say, “It’s about this, and then you take home this other thing.” It’s more deep than that. You have to see it and really have the courage to make the journey. If you take the journey, you’re going to bring back with you a lot of good things. But, if I name them, that will downsize the journey itself.
How was Alejandro, as a director?
BARDEM: He’s one of the greatest directors of all time, with the way he films and the way he puts together the filming. You have to have talent to film and also to put it together. He’s also an actor’s director. You can tear apart your heart in pieces, but if the camera is not in the right place, it doesn’t matter. He knows where to put the camera. He knows how to hold the silence. He knows how to put the music in the right place. He knows how to cut and how to work the cut. All of that helps you to put the best performance out there. That’s how good he is. When you’re working with the best, it helps you to be good because then you are focusing on what you have to do, instead of where the camera is. We were all on the same page.
Did you approach this character by seeing the good and bad in him?
BARDEM: I saw him as a human being. I don’t believe in stereotypes. Most of the time, stereotypes are just that. But, the world is different. We are doing right and wrong, at least 20 times per day. As an actor, you can’t judge. A great actress from Spain said, “We, the actors, are lawyers of the characters we play. We have to defend them, no matter what.”
What do you think it says about Uxbal that he’s surrounded by all these unreliable people?
BARDEM: Uxbal didn’t have any choice. Many people out there don’t have a choice, in choosing their friends and the people they’re being manipulated by. Thank god, I have that choice. I can use my judgement and choose. He couldn’t because that was the people he was dealing with.
How would you feel, if you got nominated for an Oscar for this role?
BARDEM: It’s great fun. It’s a great honor. It’s something that you never dream of. And then, it happens and you are there, and you try to share it with all the people that are so meaningful to you, but you don’t have the time, so you have to choose which people. But, they understand. They’re your people because they understand.
What did you learn about acting from your mother?
BARDEM: She’s 71 years old now, and she’s been acting since she was 15, so I learned a lot of things from her. I learned that you can’t buy either the gold or the failure because none of them are truth.
How do you pick your characters?
BARDEM: I don’t know. It happens. You feel driven to it. You’re like, “Okay, this is interesting.” But, it’s less about playing one-sided people and more about playing multi-layered people. That’s what the world is about. I did No Country For Old Men, which was a one-sided person, but I did it because it was the Coen brothers in a film from Cormac McCarthy’s book, and I knew I was going to be protected and safe. But, even though I knew I had to play a one-colored kind of guy, he was full of many other things that could not be seen, but had to be felt.
Would you like to work with the Coen brothers again?
BARDEM: I would love to. I had great fun with them. I hated them, but had great fun. They did that awful haircut on me. Everybody thought it was a wig, but it was my hair.
When are you going to do Glee?
BARDEM: I don’t know. I talked to (show creator) Ryan [Murphy] and he seems to be very excited about the idea, but that was a long time ago. I don’t know anything, I swear.
Are you ready to sing?
BARDEM: I don’t know. I have to read something first.
