Now that Len Wiseman’s remake of Total Recall has Colin Farrell in the role originally played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1990 Paul Verhoeven film, the film is casting for the lead female roles. For those who haven’t seen the original film, the two lead female roles are Douglas Quaid’s (Farrell) wife Lori (played in the original film by Sharon Stone) and the other is Martian freedom fighter Melina (originally played by Rachel Ticotin).


Deadline reports that Diane Kruger and Kate Bosworth have read for the role of Lori; Paula Patton, Jessica Biel, and Eva Green have read for Melina, and Eva Mendes has read for both roles. Hit the jump for my thoughts on the casting. Total Recall is set to open on August 3, 2012.

Exclusive: Uma Thurman Talks BEL AMI

Almost a year ago we posted the first images from Bel Ami. However, since that time, news on the Robert Pattinson film has been rather quiet.


A brief refresher: slated for a 2011 release, Bel Ami follows Georges Duroy (Pattinson), a nineteenth-century French journalist who ascends Paris’ social ladder through a number of manipulative trists with talented and influential women. The film is based on Guy De Maupassant’s celebrated 1885 novel and will be helmed by noted theatre directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod. Uma Thurman and Kristen Scott Thomas co-star and, to the envy of Twifans the world over, be thoroughly taken advantage of by Pattinson. Thurman will play Duroy’s central paramour and ladder rung, Madeleine Forestier, while Thomas will play a socialite who is seduced by the suave, power-hungry protagonist.

David O. Russell May Write Sequel to THE FIGHTER

Over the past few weeks, Mark Wahlberg has been openly mulling a sequel to The Fighter. Wahlberg, who produced the flick in addition to starring as boxer Micky Ward, has said that the sequel would focus on the trilogy of fights between Ward and Arturo Gatti. He also says that everyone, including Oscar-winners Christian Bale and Melissa Leo, had such a great time that he couldn’t imagine them not wanting to return. However, a larger question mark was whether or not director David O. Russell would be willing to get behind the camera.


MTV caught up with O. Russell and learned that he would be willing to not only direct, but also write the script this time around. Says O. Russell:


“I think Micky’s story has a lot of heart whichever way you cut it. You’d go towards the Gatti fights and you could go into the history of the family more. I really like the sisters.”

Casting Call: Chris “Ludacris” Bridges Joins NEW YEAR’S EVE; Alan Rickman and Tom Courtenay Join GAMBIT Remake

We have some quick casting stories for you this afternoon. First up, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges has joined Garry Marshall’s upcoming romantic comedy New Year’s Eve. The ever-expanding cast already includes (deep breath) Robert De Niro, Ashton Kutcher, Halle Berry, Jessical Biel, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sarah Jessica Parker, Hilary Swank, Zac Efron, Sienna Miller, Lea Michelle, Sofia Vergara, Abigail Breslin, Til Schweiger, Seth Meyes, Jon Bon Jovi, Josh Duhamel, and Carla Gugino. So where does Bridges fit into this collection of actors getting paid for what probably amounts to a few days work in under-developed storylines about people falling in and out of love on New Year’s Eve? According to THR, Bridges will play “a NYPD cop who is working with the director of the Times Square festivities (Swank).”

Mike Newell to Direct Adaptation of GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Director Mike Newell (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) will direct an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations.  From what I gathered about the tale when South Park adapted it, it’s about an old woman who uses the tears of men to power her Genesis device.  Of course, the more famous adaptation is David Lean’s 1948 film and the book was adapted again in 1998 with Alfonso Cuaron at the helm and starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Ethan Hawke, Anne Bancroft, and Robert De Niro.  Strangely, neither Lean nor Cuaron’s versions featured the Genesis device.  THR reports that Newell will have a “fresh take” on the material, but doesn’t specify if Newell will go classic like Lean’s version, modern like Cuaron’s, or absurd like South Park.

Newell’s Great Expectations will be part of the Dickens’ bicentenary in 2012.  Hit the jump for a real (read: no Genesis device) synopsis of Dickens’ classic novel.

Rian Johnson’s The Brothers Bloom was my favorite film of 2009 and I’m excited out of my mind for his follow-up, Looper.  The sci-fi flick concerns hitmen (“loopers”) who use time-travel to cover the tracks of their murders.  The film is currently shooting and has been posting photos from the set.

Casting Call: Diane Kruger and Lea Seydoux to Star in LES ADIERUX A LA REINE; Richard Gere Joins ARBITRAGE

We have two pieces of casting news for you this afternoon.  First up, Variety reports that Diane Kruger and Lea Seydoux (Robin Hood) have joined the French period drama Les Adieux a la reine. The film is based on the novel by Chantal Thomas and centers on “the three decisive days of the French Revolution in July 1789, told from the point of view of Marie Antoinette’s reader.”  Kruger will play Antoinette in the film, which also stars Gerard Depardieu and Noe­mie Lovski (The French Kissers).  Benoit Jacquot will direct.

According to Deadline, Richard Gere is close to signing on to Nicholas Jarecki’s debut feature film Arbitrage.  When we first reported on the story in November, Al Pacino had signed on, but since there’s no mention of him in Deadline’s story, I assume that he’s dropped out and Gere is replacing him.  The story is about “troubled hedge fund magnate desperate to complete the sale of his trading empire makes an error that forces him to turn to an unlikely person for help.”  Jarecki, who previously directed the documentary The Outsider and wrote the script for Gregor Jordan’s The Informers (shudder), also penned the script for Arbitrage. Eva Green and Susan Sarandon are attached to co-star and shooting is scheduled to begin mid-April in New York.

Earlier this week, Samuel L. Jackson confirmed his involvement in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers. The actor also stated that he was testing with five female actresses jostling for the role of his new sidekick (since, apparently, Scarlett Johansson is too big to be a sidekick). Deadline reports that TV star Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) is close to landing the role of SHIELD executive director Maria Hill, and that a deal could be done long before we’ve gotten over our Super Bowl XLV hangovers.
If Smulders and Marvel close the deal, she would join Jackson, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, and Scarlett Johansson in The Avengers.  Hit the jump for more on Maria Hill.

First Synopsis for David Koepp’s PREMIUM RUSH Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Shannon

David Koepp, the director and writer of 2008’s Ghost Town and writer of action blockbusters like Spider-Man, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, has been working on a new action thriller entitled Premium Rush – which he wrote and directed.  You’ll remember the films star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, ended up with 31 stitches during the filming of one of the actions scenes back in July. You can check out pictures of Levitt on set here.  Anyway, we’ve been sent an early synopsis for the film and you can check it out after the jump.
Premium Rush is produced by Columbia Pictures and also stars Jamie Chung (Sorority Row) Dania Ramirez (Entourage) and Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire).  It’s slated for a January 13^th, 2012 release:

Alice Eve, Diane Kruger, and Rosamund Pike on the Short List for Female Lead in SUPERMAN; Not Lois Lane

Alice Eve (She’s Out of My League), Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), and Rosamund Pike (An Education) are reportedly on the short list to play the female lead in the new Superman film opposite Henry Cavill (The Tudors).  But get this — it’s not Lois Lane.  It has not been revealed what role they’re up for, surely thanks to the secrecy producer Christopher Nolan is able to maintain on his projects.  It is not specified if Lois will appear in a reduced capacity, but it appears the female lead will not be Ms. Lane as assumed in previous rumors.  Shades of Mary Jane Watson’s absence in the Spider-Man reboot in favor of Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacey.
Zack Snyder is directing the superhero reboot from a script by David Goyer, due in December 2012.  More after the jump:

Ben Affleck in Talks to Direct ARGO; George Clooney and Grant Heslov Producing

Following the critical and commercial success of The Town, we’ve watched Ben Affleck deliberate over his follow-up.  Possibilities include a film about the conflict in eastern Congo, Replay, The Trade, and American Bullshit.  Just a hunch, but the latest option could be the one that sticks.  Affleck is in early negotiations to direct Argo , a political drama which revolves around the Iran hostage crisis in 1979.  George Clooney and Grant Heslov (The American) are producing along with David Klawans (Nacho Libre).
Chris Terrio (Heights) wrote the script based on a Wired magazine article titled “How the CIA Used a Fake Sci-Fi Flick to Rescue Americans from Tehran.”  Read about the wacky spy hijinks after the jump:

Ralph Fiennes in Talks for BOND 23; Kevin Spacey Was Under Consideration for a Minute

At this stage, only franchise star Daniel Craig and Judi Dench are confirmed to return for Bond 23, with Sam Mendes (Away We Go) directing.  The casting process kicked into the next gear earlier this week, though, when Javier Bardem spoke out about possibly playing the villain.  In keeping the discussion among Oscar nominees, the producers are in early talks with Ralph Fiennes to play a role.
Mendes and Fiennes are old friends, ever since the actor starred in the director’s stage production of Troilus And Cressida more than two ­decades ago.  Fiennes is intrigued by the “darkly complex role,” which is reportedly different from the one that was offered to Bardem.  Details after the break:

Tom Hardy: 'Inception' Wins Four VES Awards!

Tom Hardy suits up for the 9th Annual VES Awards held at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on Tuesday (February 1) in Bevelry Hills, Calif.

The 33-year-old actor’s hit film, Inception, was the night’s big winner, scoring four awards from the Visual Effects Society.

Inception director Christopher Nolan was also honored with the inaugural VES Visionary Award.

On Monday, Tom, who’s set to play the villain Bane in Christopher’s The Dark Knight Rises, was spotted wearing a Batman t-shirt while arriving at LAX.

Justin Timberlake: Shirtless Swimming for 'Now'!

Justin Timberlake goes shirtless as he films scenes for his new movie, Now, on Monday (January 31) in Malibu, Calif.

The actor celebrated his 30th birthday yesterday - happy birthday, JT!!

Justin swam in the ocean for a night shoot but had a lifeguard nearby just in case the water got too rough.

Now also stars Amanda Seyfried and is scheduled to be released in late October.

Diane Kruger Covers 'Glamour' March 2011

Diane Kruger rocks a Chanel jacket as she graces the cover of Glamour magazine’s March 2011 issue, on newsstands Tuesday (February 8)!

Here’s what the 34-year-old German actress had to share:

On her love of fashion: “I truly, genuinely like clothes. Making them is an art form, and wearing them is a form of self-expression. I find it very emotional because I can remember moments in my life - my mood, how I felt - through these clothes.”

On her biggest fashion splurge: “The biggest fashion purchase I ever made I thought about for six years. I’m not kidding. All my life I wanted to own an Hermès Constance bag, and when I signed with Calvin Klein, I decided this was the time that I could afford it. I truly broke a sweat when I paid for it.”

On her boyfriend Joshua Jackson and his style: “We go shopping. But he likes it. I definitely wasn’t fond of these blue sneakers that he wore all the time for about a year and a half.”

On marrying and divorcing when she was younger: “Without sounding pessimistic, I learned that I don’t believe in marriage. I believe in a commitment that you make in your heart. There’s no paper that will make you stay.”

Sandra Bullock Is In The Hood

Sandra Bullock flashes photographers a smile while leaving her townhouse on Monday (January 31) in New York City.

The 46-year-old actress kept warm in black boots, a hoodie, and a long coat.

On Friday, Sandra, who’s currently making herself at home in NYC while she films Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, stepped out in the snow.

In a few weeks, Sandra will be heading to L.A. for the Academy Awards, where she’ll hit the stage as a presenter, one year after taking home the Best Actress Oscar!

Mark Webber Casts Michael Cera, Amanda Seyfried, and His Two-Year-Old Son in Untitled Film

Unless you’re a die hard Scott Pilgrim vs. the World fan, the name Mark Webber may not sound familiar — but it soon will. The indie actor wrote, directed, and stars in an untitled film about a struggling single father who is trying to raise his two year old son in the wake of the child’s mother’s death. The movie mirrors Webber’s own life, and he cast his own two-year-old as his son in the movie.

Michael Cera, Jason Ritter, Shannyon Sossamon and Amanda Seyfried either co-star or cameo as “heightened versions of themselves.”  The movie is being shot for well under a million dollars and has virtually no crew — just a director of photography and a sound person. Jessica Alba and Diane Kruger add some star power to the Vogue Paris Dinner on Tuesday (January 25) at Hotel de la Rochefoucauld Doudeauville in Paris, France.

Both actresses, dressed in Gucci, attended the bash, which was held in honor of Gucci designer Frida Giannini as part of Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week.

Earlier in the day, Jess, 29, was spotted leaving the Gucci boutique before heading to Cafe de Flor with some friends.

Diane, meanwhile, stepped out for the Chanel show.

Naomi Watts: Leonardo DiCaprio's 'J. Edgar' Secretary

Naomi Watts has signed on to star in Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar, Deadline reports.

The 42-year-old actress is set to play Helen Gandy, FBI head J. Edgar Hoover’s loyal secretary for 54 years, in the upcoming film.

Leonardo DiCaprio will star as J. Edgar, while Josh Lucas will play aviator Charles Lindbergh.

Other previously reported cast members include Ed Westwick, as Agent Smith (Hoover’s biographer), and Armie Hammer as Clyde Tolson (Hoover’s number two man at the FBI and his secret lover).
