Casting Call: Gugu Mbatha-Raw Joins ODD THOMAS; Michael B. Jordan and Alex Russell Tapped as Leads in CHRONICLE

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 15th, 2011

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this evening. First up, the cast for Stephen Sommers’ adapatation of the Dean Koontz novel Odd Thomas continues to fill out, with Undercovers star Gugu Mbatha-Raw being the latest actor to join the film. Odd Thomas stars Anton Yelchin as the eponymous character who is able to see and partially communicate with the dead. Addison Timlin is poised to play his girlfriend, and Variety reports that Mbatha-Raw will play her best friend. The cast now includes Nico Tortorella and Patton Oswalt, with Willem Dafoe in talks to play the local police chief.
Additionally, Michael B. Jordan (TV’s Friday Night Lights) and Alex Russell have been tapped as the leads in Fox’s supernatural drama alongside Dane DeHaan. Variety reports that plot details are under wraps, but the story apparently centers on “three Portland teens after they develop powers from exposure to a mysterious substance.” Josh Trank (The Kill Point) will make his feature directorial debut on the project, from a script by Max Landis. Chronicle is slated for a February 3, 2012 release.

Ryan Gosling in Talks for "The Lone Ranger" with Johnny Depp

Posted: April 15th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Johnny Depp has been attached to star as Native American sidekick Tonto in Disney's "The Lone Ranger" film for quite some time. There have been talks that George Clooney may play the lead role, but now comes word that Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine) is in talks.

The Wrap says Gosling may not be able to take the role because the actor has recently signed on for the "Logan's Run" remake, which begins shooting this fall.

"The Lone Ranger" is directed by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) from a screenplay by Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road). The film is scheduled to appear in theaters in 2014.

Lone Ranger Eyes Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling to take on the Lone Ranger?
Ryan Gosling to take on the Lone Ranger?
Walt Disney Pictures is currently in talks with Ryan Gosling to co-star in their upcoming reboot Lone Ranger. The actor will appear opposite Johnny Depp, whose Tonto will actually be the lead, if he decides to take the part.

Ryan Gosling has already signed onto appear in Logan's Run, which may keep him from accepting the role of John Reid, aka the Lone Ranger. Logan's Run is scheduled to shoot in the fall, but it isn't quite clear when Lone Ranger will begin production. Johnny Depp is first shooting Dark Shadows, which is ramping up at this very moment.

Walt Disney's Lone Ranger will be told through the point-of-view of Tonto, while the masked man himself will become more of a sidekick. Timothy Olyphant and George Clooney have also been mentioned for this role.

Lone Ranger is in development and stars Johnny Depp. The film is directed by Gore Verbinski.

New Posters for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES and ABDUCTION

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 15th, 2011

New posters have been released for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Abduction.  The Pirates poster is basically a reprint of a previous poster but this one lets you know that the movie will be in IMAX 3D, or as the poster puts it: “IMA-[Pirates of the Caribbean logo] 3D,” which is really the best kind of 3D.
As for the Abduction poster, it gives you a very strong indication of the final film in that it shows you the single facial expression Taylor Lautner will have for the movie’s full runtime.  I watched the trailer yesterday and I struggled to believe that I ever liked him in parts of New Moon.
Hit the jump to check out the posters.  Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opens May 20th.  Abduction gets released on September 23rd.

**New Set Photos from Steven Soderbergh’s HAYWIRE Starring Gina Carano and Ewan McGregor **Mark Ruffalo Set to Play Jazz Pianist Joe Albany in Indie Drama LOW DOWN **Danny Huston Joins the Cast of MEDALLION Starring Nicolas Cage and Malin Akerman **Duncan Jones Plans to Turn MUTE into a Graphic Novel

New Set Photos from Steven Soderbergh’s HAYWIRE Starring Gina Carano and Ewan McGregor
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 11th, 2011 at 11:44 am

If you want to see Gina Carano fake-beating the snot out of Ewan McGregor, then today’s your lucky day. Set photos from Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming thriller Haywire have leaked on line and show the wetsuit-clad MMA fighter throwing some fake punches against the British actor. I’m not sure about the context of the scene, but the plot centers on a covert agent (Carano) who is double-crossed on a mission and returns home to protect her family and get revenge. While the premise sounds bland, I don’t expect Soderbergh to deliver a typical spy-thriller.

Hit the jump to check out the set photos. Haywire also stars Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, and Bill Paxton. The film was rumored to be released in April, but obviously since we’ve seen no official marketing, we probably won’t see the film until late summer at the earliest.

Mark Ruffalo Set to Play Jazz Pianist Joe Albany in Indie Drama LOW DOWN
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 11th, 2011 at 5:54 pm

Following his Oscar nominated stint in The Kids Are All Right, Mark Ruffalo has signed on to portray legendary jazz pianist Joe Albany in the indie drama Low Down. Epoch Films partner Jeff Preiss is set to make his feature film debut on the project which will tell the story of Albany’s life from the perspective of his 11-year-old daughter. While in the 40’s and 50’s Alabany was playing with the likes of Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, he struggled with a heroin addiction throughout the later years of his life.

Variety reports that the film will focus mainly on Albany’s life during the 60’s and 70’s, with his daughter watching her “charismatic but strung-out father interact with other eccentric characters in cocktail bars and transient hotels.” Topper Lilien and Amy Albany wrote the script, based on Alabany’s memoir focusing on her father. Ruffalo will also serve as an executive producer on the project. The actor is currently prepping for his turn as Bruce Banner/the Hulk in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers.

by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 11th, 2011 at 4:02 pm

Actor Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) has joined the cast of director Simon West’s (When a Stranger Calls) upcoming action-thriller Medallion. The Playlist reports that Huston will join Nicolas Cage in the flick, which centers on a former master thief (Cage) who has only a few hours to find his daughter when she is kidnapped and locked in the trunk of a New York medallion taxi cab. Malin Akerman will portray an ex-girlfriend of Cage’s who teams up with him to find his daughter. The Taken-esque flick has a script from David Guggenheim (Safe House) and marks the re-teaming of Cage and West after their previous collaboration on Con Air.

Duncan Jones Plans to Turn MUTE into a Graphic Novel
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 11th, 2011 at 11:04 am

When we last reported on Duncan Jones’ Mute, the project was in limbo. The script is reportedly takes cues from Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and centers on a mute bartender in 2046 Berlin who must go against the city’s gangsters in order to find his girlfriend. Unfortunately, that doesn’t translate well to a collector’s cup so the project is having trouble finding funding. Jones, whose new film Source Code opens April 1st, says that he’s going to adapt the story in to a graphic novel and hope that makes the property more attractive to investors. Speaking to Gordon and the Whale, Jones explains:

Although, I can sort of tell you that I’ve been talking to my producer today and we have decided that we’re going to release MUTE as a graphic novel. Because we’ve had so many problems trying to get this film made, you know? The people who are involved with financing films have just been…shy…shy of making the script. So what we decided to do is we’re going to make a graphic novel of it, prove it…prove it to an audience that this works and maybe in the future get the chance to come back and make it.

In the meantime, Jones is working on an untitled project that he hopes will fulfill his need to make a Blade Runner-like “city-based, futuristic sci-fi film.”

**Elysium Sets March 2013 Release Date **Elysium Adds Wagner Moura as the Villain **Beginners Poster

Elysium Sets March 2013 Release Date
Sony Pictures has set a March 8, 2013 release date for Neill Blomkamp's upcoming sci-fi thriller Elysium.

This news comes hot off the heels of today's earlier announcement that Brazilian actor Wagner Moura will play the villain. Little is known about the plot for Elysium, other than it will be set on another planet and will deal with social issues. Matt Damon will star as a con man, while Sharlto Copley co-stars.

Neill Blomkamp is directing Elysium from his own original screenplay. It isn't clear when production will start, although, with a 2013 release date locked in, it might be awhile before this project goes before cameras.

As of now, Elysium has the March 8 release date all to itself.

Elysium comes to theaters March 8th, 2013 and stars Sharlto Copley, Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Wagner Moura. The film is directed by Neill Blomkamp.

Elysium Adds Wagner Moura as the Villain
Brazilian actor Wagner Moura, who stars in the Elite Squad movie series, has joined the cast of Neill Blomkamp's sci-fi thriller Elysium.

Wagner Moura will play the main villain in this mysterious adventure; a man who has a bizarre sense of humor. Little else is known about the story, although it is said that Matt Damon will play a con man, with Sharlto Copley also starring. Jodie Foster is reportedly attached to the project still, although she revealed last month she isn't yet signed for Elysium.

Neill Blomkamp will direct Elysium from his own screenplay. It isn't clear when production will start yet, although a late 2012 release date is being targeted.

Wagner Moura will make his Hollywood debut with Elysium after starring in 2008's Elite Squad and last year's Elite Squad 2, which was the top-grossing movie in Brazil.

Elysium comes to theaters March 8th, 2013 and stars Sharlto Copley, Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Wagner Moura. The film is directed by Neill Blomkamp.

Beginners Poster
Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, and Mélanie Laurent star in director Mike Mills's upcoming dramatic comedy Beginners. Focus Features has released the first poster, which you can check out below.

Beginners Poster
From writer/director Mike Mills comes a comedy/drama about how deeply funny and transformative life can be, even at its most serious moments. "Beginners" imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (Golden Globe Award nominee Ewan McGregor). Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Mélanie Laurent of "Inglourious Basterds") only months after his father Hal (Academy Award nominee Christopher Plummer) has passed away. This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father who - following 44 years of marriage - came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life. The upheavals of Hal's new honesty, by turns funny and moving, brought father and son closer than they'd ever been able to be. Now Oliver endeavors to love Anna with all the bravery, humor, and hope that his father taught him.

Beginners comes to theaters June 3rd, 2011 and stars Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, Mélanie Laurent, Goran Visnjic, Bill Oberst Jr., Mary Page Keller, Jodi Long, Kai Lennox. The film is directed by Mike Mills.

"Hitman" Director Wants to Helm "Daredevil" Reboot

Posted: March 6th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

While promoting his new "The Divide" film, director Xavier Gens (Hitman) revealed that he would love the chance to helm 20th Century Fox's reboot of "Daredevil."

"If I make a 'Daredevil' movie, I would go in a completely different direction," he explained. "My vision of the character is much more a drama. For me it's important to include the origin of the character like in Richard Donner's 'Superman.' We saw him slowly become a superhero, but I think it's important to take time and stay realistic. It's also very important to let the director make his own vision of the character, not make a studio movie. 'The Dark Knight' is totally the vision of Nolan."

When asked who he would like to star in his movie, Gens replied: "For Daredevil I think Sam Worthington could be great and intense for this character. The villain depends on the story."

We recently heard that "The Dark Knight Rises" may revolve around Batman and Catwoman taking on The League of Shadows, which is headed by Talia Al'Ghul. So does this mean that there's a chance that Liam Neeson may return as Ra's Al Ghul?

"In the comic books, Ra's Al Ghul goes into a life bath of some sort and immerses himself to become immortal," he said. "But no-one's approached me with an offer. I'd like to if it happens."

Rutger Hauer was also asked if he would return as the CEO of Wayne Enterprises. "I think not. I would have heard about it," he replied.

Update: Only Three Actors Returning for "GI Joe" Sequel

Posted: March 4th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

We recently heard that Paramount Pictures decided to hire "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" director John Chu to direct their "GI Joe" sequel. Now comes word that most of the cast won't be returning.

Rachel Nichols, who played Scarlett in the first movie, posted the following on her Twitter account: "'GI Joe 2' News Flash: The only characters to return in the Jon Chu-directed sequel will be Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, and Duke."

So that means that Ray Park, Byung-hun Lee and Channing Tatum will all be back, but it sounds like even Nichols herself won't have a part in the sequel, which will begin filming this summer.

Update: Paramount Pictures has just announced that "GI Joe 2" will hit theaters on August 10th, 2012.

Ewan McGregor And Andrew Garfield Making Bank Robberies The New Vampires

published: 2011-03-05 10:29:17 Author: Will LeBlanc
Hollywood is driven by trends. Be it vampires or ensemble rom-coms or superhero movies, there are patterns in the business and two upcoming films are hoping to break the mold a little bit by returning the classic bank robber movie back to the forefront of American cinema, so says the LA Times.

The Robber, a German film released only last year, will be adapted for American audiences and could potentially star one of young Hollywood’s biggest up and comers Andrew Garfield. Of course, we as Americans can already see this movie simply by renting it, but I guess since we’re too lazy to read a movie they’ll spend $50 million remaking it for us.

The film follows athlete Johann Retenberger who starts robbing banks as a hobby to fulfill his need for an adrenaline rush. The original focused more on the mystery behind the real life character, omitting personal details of his life that producer Laura Ziskin will include in the American version. Garfield has expressed interest in playing the lead and with Ziskin, who is also producing Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man, the pairing is likely to take place.

Robber is still in its infancy as producers are on the hunt for writers to take on the project.

The second movie looking to make bank robbery cool again, titled Electric Slide, will examine another real life bank robber, except this time it will be Southern Californian Eddie Dodson. Dodson’s story takes place in the 80’s when he began robbing banks for the money to support his drug habits as well as his antique shop on Melrose Ave.

Slide has been in development for ages but has just never found the right producer to get it to the screen. Currently, Blue Valentine producer Jamie Patricof, has the job who, according to the
LA Times, often makes good on getting problem projects to theaters. With a name like Ewan MacGregor on board to play the lead though, they shouldn’t run into much more trouble.

Of course while it’s true that bank robbery moviesare few and far between and that the more recent among them haven’t really been about the robbery itself, but about the people’s stories surrounding the heist, but that doesn’t make them any less robbery films. The Town and Inside Man are two great recent examples, then of course there's Heat whose bank robbery sequence sparks one of the greatest shootouts ever filmed, but their main focus is elsewhere. Robber and Slide seem to be hoping to return Hollywood to Bonnie and Clyde era, when heist flicks were about the heist.

Stay tuned for more news as this trend picks up steam in the Hollywood hills.

Cameron Diaz is a naughty teacher
02.23.11
After the jump, it’s the red-band trailer for Bad Teacher, starring Cam’ron Diaz and Justin Timberlake  I read this script a while back and really liked it, but then Sony hired Cameron Diaz to play the lead and her then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake to play her love interest, the kind of decision that only makes sense if you’re a studio exec.  On the plus side, Jake Kasdan is directing (of Orange County and the criminally underrated Walk Hard) and Jason Segel has a supporting role.  Maybe I can still pretend to buy Cameron Diaz in this role long enough to enjoy it?  It’s going to be hard, but if I can get Burnsy to stop feeding me popcorn with his big man paws like he usually does, I might be able to manage.

Early Edition: Ewan McGregor Ready to Be a 'Giant Killer'

Posted Feb 25th 2011 8:00AM
Fee fie foe fum! Ewan McGregor is in talks to join the long-gestating Bryan Singer production of 'Jack the Giant Killer,' a modern day fairy tale in which a long-standing peace between men and giants is threatened when a young farmer leads an expedition into the giants' kingdom in hopes of rescuing a kidnapped princess. The movie is finally taking off -- with shooting scheduled to begin in March in London -- and several key roles have been cast: Nicholas Hoult ('Skins') will play Jack and Stanley Tucci will play the villain, an advisor to the king with designs on usurping power. Bill Nighy and John Kassir will play the two-headed leader of the giants. McGregor will play the leader of the king's giant-fighting elite guards. Still to be cast: the princess. [The Hollywood Reporter]

We all know that 'Toy Story 3' was the top-grossing film of the year, both in North America and overseas (with $1.062 billion worldwide) -- followed by 'Alice in Wonderland' ($1.023 billion), 'Inception' ($817 million), 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1' ($824.1 million) and 'Shrek Forever After' ($750 million). But what was the top-grossing independent film of the year? That honor goes to 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,' which took in $698.3 million, according to the Independent Film & Television Alliance. 'Resident Evil: Afterlife' was second with $270.7 million, followed by 'The Expendables' with $228.4 million worldwide. [

Ewan McGregor Negotiating for Jack the Giant Killer

February 24, 2011

Ewan McGregor is in negotiations for a part in Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Killer, New Line Cinema has confirmed to ComingSoon.net.

The project, a fantasy drama that re-teams Singer with The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, is said to take an adult look at the "Jack and the Beanstalk" legend. When a princess is kidnapped, a long-standing peace between men and giants becomes threatened, and a young farmer is given an opportunity to lead a dangerous expedition to the giant kingdom to rescue her.

The cast already includes Nicholas Hoult in the title role with Bill Nighy, Stanley Tucci and John Kassir co-starring. As production is expected to begin sometime next month, the full cast should be announced shortly.

First Look at James Franco in Rise of the Apes

Source: 20th Century Fox
February 24, 2011

20th Century Fox has provided ComingSoon.net with a first look at James Franco in Rise of the Apes, opening in theaters on November 23. Franco, who is co-hosting the Oscars on Sunday with Anne Hathaway, stars in the Rupert Wyatt-directed film with John Lithgow, Freida Pinto, Andy Serkis, Brian Cox, Tom Felton and David Oyelowo.

Oscar-winning visual effects house Weta Digital – employing certain of the groundbreaking technologies developed for Avatar – will render, for the first time ever in the film series, photo-realistic apes rather than costumed actors.

Set in present day San Francisco,
Rise of the Apes is a reality-based cautionary tale, a science fiction/science fact blend, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.

UPDATE: Jake Gyllenhaal And Garrett Hedlund Among Actors Shortlisted For The Bourne Legacy

published: 2011-02-24 19:40:21 Author: Eric Eisenberg
UPDATE: Deadline reports that Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer, and Benjamin Walker are also in the mix for the part.

One advantage that the Jason Bourne franchise had for its last two sequels is that it didn't have to worry about finding their lead actor. Matt Damon was the super assassin with amnesia and everything was right with the world. But now that Universal is making a fourth installment without Damon, the mission has begun to find the actor that can step into his shoes.
Variety is reporting that a shortlist for director Tony Gilroy's The Bourne Legacy has been leaked and contains five names, four of whom shouldn't really come as a surprise. These stars include Jake Gyllenhaal, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch, and Kellan Lutz. Strangely, the other name on the list is Tobey Maguire, who, with his skinny frame made, for a good Spider-Man, but might be a little out of place as a CIA-trained killing machine. While the article isn't specific as to which names belong where, it says that the list contains both actors Gilroy is interested in for the part and actors the studio is pushing (it's also worth noting that Universal wouldn't comment on this list). Making the casting process all the more interesting, Gilroy wants to screentest all of the actors, meaning that it's entirely possible that an unknown name could still swing in and take the part. The film is currently scheduled to begin production this Spring.

Though I understand that Gilroy is as much a part of the Bourne franchise as Matt Damon or Paul Greengrass, having written all three previous films, I still find it hard wrapping my mind around the idea of a Bourne movie without Jason Bourne. If you can't make a Bond movie without Bond, why can you make a Bourne movie without Bourne? It would be nice to see them work it out and have Damon return to the role sometime down the line, but I will remain skeptical until given reason why I shouldn't be.
