Paul Schneider to Star in Broken Lizard’s THE BABY MAKER; Sienna Miller Reportedly Joins FREAKY DEAKY

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 27th, 2011

We have a couple quick casting notes to report.  First up, Paul Schneider (Lars and the Real Girl) will star in Broken Lizard’s new movie The Baby Maker.  While Broken Lizard will star and the troupe’s Jay Chandrasekhar will direct, the script was penned by Ice Age: The Meltdown writers Peter Gaulke and Gerry Swallow.  Per Variety, “Story follows a married couple who fail to conceive after months of trying, prompting the husband to enlist his friends’ help to rob a Pasadena sperm bank, where he made a deposit as a young man.  All of the Broken Lizard members are expected to co-star, with Kevin Heffernan playing the protag’s crazy best friend, who hooks him up with an Estonian master thief, played by Chandrasekhar. Other Broken Lizard members include Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske.”
Why the sperm bank wouldn’t simply give him back his own seed is beyond me.  I’m also surprised that sperm keeps for that long.  Logistics aside, Schneider is terrific actor and it will be interesting to see him play against the Broken Lizard gang.  Hit the jump for some casting news regarding the adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s Freaky Deaky.

Trailer for THE WHISTLEBLOWER Starring Rachel Weisz

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: May 27th, 2011 at 8:47 am

The US trailer for The Whistleblower has gone online.  Based on real events, Rachel Weisz stars as a UN peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia who uncovers rampant corruption and a massive cover-up of criminal activity.  The film played the festival circuit last year to positive notices and I’m glad I’ll finally get a chance to see it in the near future.  In addition to Weisz, the impressive cast features David Strathairn, Monica Bellucci, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jason Isaacs, and Vanessa Redgrave.

First Clip from GREEN LANTERN

With the film’s release only a few weeks away, the first clip from Green Lantern has gone online.  The clip was shown on Attack of the Show before an interview with Michael Clarke Duncan who voices Kilowog.  In the clip, we see Kilowog training Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds).  What I really like about this clip is that previously we’ve seen Hal generate swords, chainguns, and a giant fist, but what’s so fantastic about the ring is that it can conjure anything.  Seeing what a seasoned Green Lantern Corps member like Kilowog constructs in this clip is pretty ingenious and raises my excitement for the completed film.

New Picture of Sean Hayes as Larry in the Farrelly Brothers THREE STOOGES Movie

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub   Posted: May 27th, 2011 at 2:54 am

Sean Hayes (Larry) The Three Stooges movie image slice
With filming underway in Atlanta on the Farrelly Brothers Three Stooges movie, the other day we posted our first look at Larry (Sean Hayes) and Moe (Chris Diamantopoulos) on set.  However, we now have a much better look at Hayes as Larry.  If there was anyone who doubted that Hayes looked like Larry, this picture will silence the naysayers.  However, we still don’t know how he’ll play the character, but I’ve always thought Hayes was an underrated actor, and I think he’s going to nail it.
The Three Stooges will be comprised of three 27-minute segments (just like the originals), the first of which see them as children raising all kinds of hell in an orphanage.  Hit the jump for a better picture. http://collider.com/three-stooges-movie-image-sean-hayes-larry/93280/

Jonah Hill to Direct "Kitchen Sink" with Vampires, Zombies and Aliens
Posted: March 2nd, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Jonah Hill (Superbad) is currently working on his "21 Jump Street" movie and is now making plans to direct "The Kitchen Sink" for Sony Pictures, which will be the actor's helming debut.

The script is written by Oren Uziel (new "Mortal Kombat" movie) and is about the unlikely alliance between a high school-aged vampire, zombie and human as they try to save their town from invading aliens. The script made the 2010 Black List.

The title "The Kitchen Sink" is a self-aware reference to the fact that the writer has thrown every known and currently popular movie menace into a story that is at its core a coming of age tale.

"It's more in the spirit of 'The Breakfast Club,' but you get an idea of the title in an early scene where two kids are running from zombies," said producer Matt Tolmach. "Those zombies suddenly are attacked by vampires. Just when they are all facing off, there's a bright light overhead. You realize the aliens have landed and these groups have to band together, suppress the urge to kill each other, and it becomes thematically the enemy of my enemy is my friend."

Sienna Miller Playing A Vegas Dancer In Just Like A Woman

published: 2011-03-02 11:21:07 Author: Katey Rich
Algerian filmmaker Rachid Bouchareb brought his film Outside the Law to the Oscars on Sunday, nominated for Best Foreign Language film, but lost to Susanne Bier's Danish entry In A Better World. All the same, Bouchareb is unbowed; he's gearing up to make two English-language films in the United States in the next year, the first one to star Sienna Miller as a Chicago housewife who runs off to Las Vegas to enter a dance competition. According to Deadline shooting on the film, titled Just Like A Woman, will start on June 13, with Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani and Roschdy Zem co-starring.

Miller, who's currently acting onstage in London, told Deadline that the director is "one of those people who understand the medium of film in a way that’s not manipulative but that’s honest and raw. As a director he’s capable of anything. The kinds of films he makes are the ones I like to watch.” After Just Like A Woman he'll start prep work on Belleville's Cop, a comedy starring Queen Latifah as an LAPD cop working opposite a French-Arab transplant, to be played by Jamel Debbouze. Both films are likely to be a lot lighter than Outside the Law, which drew protests at Cannes thanks to its depiction of the Algerian independence movement of the 1950s.

Much as Bouchareb seems to be a rising filmmaker to watch, I'm especially interesting to see what Miller might make of the role. She's spent a lot of time onstage recently, after a series of films that never seemed to quite live up to the promise people saw in her. But she consistently makes interesting choices in picking roles, and this oddball character might be the one to help her break out of the "tabloid fixture/pretty girl" rut she's been in for the past few years. For whatever reason she still seems worth rooting for.

Joe Wright Hints That Keira Knightley Will Still Star In His Anna Karenina

published: 2011-03-02 10:01:11 Author: Katey Rich
The word first broke last November that Joe Wright was collaborating with legendary playwright and screenwriter Tom Stoppard to adapt Anna Karenina, the Leo Tolstoy novel that has been adapted for the screen no fewer than 10 times, the most famous version starring Greta Garbo. Since last fall, though, Wright has been hard at work on his teen assassin thriller Hanna, starring Saoirse Ronan and coming to theaters on April 8. Now that that one's finished, though, Wright, is ready to set his sights on the future, and talked to About.com about Anna Karenina, which he's hoping to shoot in the fall.

First of all, it looks like Keira Knightley will indeed be starring as Anna, as was rumored last fall; though Wright says he's "not sure yet" who the star will be, he also admits "it's fairly obvious" and "I'm loyal to my actors," and is only holding back because "she hasn't signed on the dotted line." Given that Knightley has starred in two of Wright's previous films, and is pretty much perfect to play the glamorous, romantic heroine, it's not too hard to guess what he's hinting at here.

As for the details about the project and Stoppard's script, which Wright calls "amazing," he says it will focus on both Anna's story-- about her affair and divorce-- and Levin's, about his attempts to woo Anna's relative Kitty. Oh, and the parts about agriculture that you skimmed over when you read the book in high school? Wright's ignoring that part too:

It’s a family drama. War and Peace was his big political drama and Anna Karenina, as he says in the first sentence, is about families. 'Happy families are all happy in the same way. Unhappy families are all unhappy in different ways.' So he wrote it to be read by the new emerging literate Russian population. Obviously, it goes off into analytical theoretical studies of the Russian agricultural system which I won’t involve in the script. But the actual plot of it is fairly simple and very emotional."

What Wright seems to be most interested in tackling is the fact that the Russian aristocracy of the period, where Anna Karenina is set, decided to adopt French mannerisms, going so far as to learn French at the exclusion of Russian. As Wright puts it,
The high society was quite French. They didn’t even speak Russian. A lot of them literally didn’t learn their own language so couldn’t talk to their own serfs, their own peasants, because they didn’t speak the same language. So the whole language issue is actually a really fertile one for that society.

If Wright gets moving on the project in the fall, we could see the movie as early as fall 2012, possibly in time for awards season if the film turns out as prestige-friendly as it seems on paper. After the disappointing The Soloist and Hanna, a fine movie that will definitely not be an Oscar contender, Wright seems ready to return to his period film wheelhouse from Pride & Prejudice and Atonement. With Keira Knightley as his Anna and Tom Stoppard adapting one of literature's classics, it's hard to image that this move won't work out well. http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Joe-Wright-Hints-That-Keira-Knightley-Will-Still-Star-In-His-Anna-Karenina-23440.html

Sienna Miller to Celebrate NEW YEAR’S EVE

by Jason Barr    Posted: January 6th, 2011

Sienna Miller has joined the ensemble romantic comedy New Year’s Eve.  According to The Playlist, the actress has agreed to join a ludicrously star-studded cast that features (take a deep breath): Robert De Niro, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Halle Berry, Zac Efron, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Hilary Swank, just to name a few.
New Year’s Eve is being directed by Garry Marshall, who also helmed the strikingly similar Valentine’s Day only a year ago.  Katherine Fugate also returns to pen the film which isn’t so much a sequel as it is a perfectly-timed box office jackpot.  As for Miller, details of her role are currently unknown.  Given the star power she is surrounded with, here’s to hoping she can get a word in edgewise.  New Year’s Eve is scheduled to begin shooting in New York in the near future and will hit theaters later this year on December 9th.

Tom Hardy’s WARRIOR to be Released on September 9th; Plus Updated Synopsis

by Jason Barr    Posted: January 6th, 2011

When we brought you the first image from Gavin O’ Connor’s (Pride and Glory) Warrior almost one year ago, there was minimal buzz surrounding the film.  Flash-forward to the present and Warrior is a “Tom Hardy film.”  Now, thanks to Lionsgate sending us some updated information, we know that Warrior is a “Tom Hardy film” that will be released later this year on September 9th.
Briefly, Warrior tells the story of a troubled ex-marine (Hardy) who returns to his hometown.  While there, he faces obstacles regarding his broken family while preparing to fight in an MMA tournament.  To check out a detailed synopsis as well as a hi-res image from the film, hit the jump.  In addition to Hardy, Warrior also stars Nick Nolte, Noah Emmerich (The Truman Show), Joel Edgerton (Smokin’ Aces), and Jennifer Morrison (Star Trek).
Here’s the detailed synopsis for Warrior:
Two brothers face the fight of a lifetime – and the wreckage of their broken family – within the brutal, high-stakes world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighting in Lionsgate’s action/drama, WARRIOR.
An ex-Marine haunted by a tragic past, Tommy Riordan returns to his hometown of Pittsburgh and enlists his father, a recovered alcoholic and his former coach, to train him for an MMA tournament awarding the biggest purse in the history of the sport. As Tommy blazes a violent path towards the title prize, his brother, Brendan, a former MMA fighter unable to make ends meet as a public school teacher, returns to the amateur ring to provide for his family. Even though years have passed, recriminations and past betrayals keep Brendan bitterly estranged from both Tommy and his father.
But when Brendan’s unlikely rise as an underdog sets him on a collision course with Tommy, the two brothers must finally confront the forces that tore them apart, all the while waging the most intense, winner-takes-all battle of their lives.

Robert DeNiro Named President of Jury for the 2011 Cannes Film Festival

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 6th, 2011

Robert DeNiro has been named as the president of the 2011 Cannes Film Festival Jury.  This will be the actor’s third time serving as president of a Cannes jury, having presided over two juries back in the 1980’s. Speaking about being selected as president, DeNiro had this to say:
The Cannes Film Festival is a rare opportunity for me as it is one of the oldest and one of the best in the world. Having served as president of the jury in the eighties twice, I know this isn’t an easy task for me or my fellow jury members, but I’m very honored and happy to head the jury for this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
No stranger to the festival as a competitor, DeNiro’s films Taxi Driver and The Mission have both won the coveted Palme d’Or prize at the festival in the past. DeNiro himself started the Tribeca Film Festival ten years ago as a way to celebrate New York City as a major filmmaking hub. The 2011 Cannes Film Festival will take place May 11th – 22nd.

Director Gary Ross Talks THE HUNGER GAMES

by Tommy Cook    Posted: December 17th, 2010

Last month, director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) was announced as the director to Suzanne Collins’ acclaimed novel The Hunger Games.  Ross recently sat down with EW to talk about his approach to the adaptation. Ross played rather coy about the project in the interview but did offer up some choice words in regards to the heroine of the novel Katniss:
“What makes Katniss attractive is her strength and her assuredness and her defiance and ultimately her compassion. And I don’t mean just physical strength. I mean a real strength as a human being. She knows her own truth. She feels deeply and fiercely. And this is something that the actress has to bring with her.”
The Hunger Games is part one of a trilogy focusing on an eighteen-year-old girl, who in a dystopian future must fight to the death against various other teenagers (a la Battle Royale). In the wake of Twilight, The Hunger Games has seemingly become the new “it” young adult novel. I must admit that in an effort to remain current – I too have begun to read the novel. I’m only fifty or so pages in the book; but it does show some actual literary value – something of which I couldn’t say about Stephanie Myer’s opus. For more on The Hunger Games, including some quotes from Ross in regards to casting the film as well as an official book synopsis, hit the jump.
With regards to casting, Ross remained cryptic about whether he would be casting an unknown or an established actress in the lead role of Katniss:
“We’ll cast the right person for the part. Lionsgate has been great in the respect that they don’t feel that this needs a movie star in Katniss’ role. The greatest thing about the franchise and the books being the star is that we can cast whomever we want. So we all feel like we’re just going to cast the right person.”
This to me feels like code for semi famous actress whose face you know but whose name you don’t (see Alex Pettyfer in I Am Number Four for proof of this phenomenon). Somewhere in between Amanda Seyfried and Second Girl on the left in [insert title] Michael Bay film. If I were to throw out names, how about Haley Bennett (from Joe Dante’s still unreleased The Hole) or Juno Temple (Year One).
Ross also shot down rumors that Robert Downey Jr. or Hugh Laurie would be appearing in the film:
“No…It would be wrong I think to announce [them] before we’ve actually cast them or spoken to them.”
Anyways, Gary Ross is a fine filmmaker – yes, Seabiscuit is a bit schmaltzy but Pleasantville is more than enjoyable. It should be interesting to watch the filmmaker of such “heartwarming” films, try his hand at the darker and more disturbing undertones of the novel.
Book Synopsis of The Hunger Games from The School Library Journal via Amazon:
In a not-too-distant future, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss’ young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district’s female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems to have all the fighting skills of a lump of bread dough, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives.

New Posters for THE GREEN HORNET and DYLAN DOG: DEAD OF NIGHT

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 17th, 2010

New posters have gone online for The Green Hornet and Dylan Dog: Dead of Night.  The poster Green Hornet isn’t all that spectacular, but I’m hearing positive buzz on the film, which stars Seth Rogen and Jay Chou as guys who masquerade as heroes masquerading as villains.  They also wear masks.  As for Dylan Dog, it’s an Italian teaser poster with the letters “DD” on it instead of the full title.  However, due to the character’s popularity in Italy (the film is based on one of the best-selling Italian comic books), that shouldn’t be a problem.  If the film shows up in the U.S., the marketing is going to have to be a bit more explicit.
Hit the jump to check out both posters.  Directed by Michel Gondry (Be Kind Rewind), The Green Hornet also stars Christoph Waltz and Cameron Diaz.  The film opens in 3D on January 14, 2011.  Dylan Dog: Dead of Night was directed by Kevin Munroe (TMNT) and stars Brandon Routh and Sam Huntington.  It’s set to open in Italy in March.
Poster via IMP Awards:

Here’s the official synopsis for The Green Hornet:
Britt Reid (Seth Rogen), son and heir to Los Angeles’ largest newspaper fortune, is a rich, spoiled playboy who has been happy to maintain a direction-less existence. When his father James Reid (Tom Wilkinson) dies, Britt meets an impressive and resourceful company employee, Kato (Jay Chou). They realize that they have the resources to do something worthwhile with their lives and finally step out of James Reid’s shadow. Kato builds the ultimate weapon, The Black Beauty, an indestructible car with every weapon imaginable and Britt decides that in order to be heroes, they will pose as villains. With the help of Britt’s new secretary, Lenore Case (Cameron Diaz), they learn that the chief criminal in the city is named Benjamin Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz). He has united all the gangs under his power, and he quickly sees that the Green Hornet is a direct threat to the prosperous criminal underworld he controls.

Dennis Quaid Joins BENEATH THE DARKNESS; Sienna Miller and Danny Huston Take on TWO JACKS

by Jason Barr    Posted: December 17th, 2010

We have a few bits of casting news for you this morning.  First up, Dennis Quaid has signed on to star in the indie thriller Beneath the Darkness.  Directed by Martin Guigui, Darkness is set in Texas (where it is currently shooting) and focuses on a teen who attempts to expose the deep, dark secrets of a house owned by Quaid’s character.  Speaking of which, per Variety, the actor is set to make a turn as a well-respected mortician (the best kind of mortician, in my opinion).  Quaid joins a cast that features Aimee Teegarden, Tony Oller, and Stephen Lunsford.
Next up, Sienna Miller and Danny Huston have agreed to take on Bernard Rose’s (Candyman) indie drama Two Jacks.  Based on the Tolstoy short story The Two Hussars, Jacks tells the story of an aging film director who returns to Hollywood to earn financing for his new project.  According to Variety, the director’s return is filled with “a series of wild adventures, in which he boozes, seduces a beautiful woman and fights with studio execs, winning the money he needs in a poker game.”  Given that the film spans two generations of one family, the project will also flash-forward twenty years later to focus on said director’s son (played by Jack Huston of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire) as he attempts to follow in his father’s directorial footsteps.  No details regarding Miller or Huston’s roles are available as of now.
