New Poster for STRAW DOGS Breaks James Marsden’s Glasses

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: June 14th, 2011

straw-dogs-poster-slice
I have yet to see the 1971 Straw Dogs (it’s on my Before I Turn 30 list), but I love that poster.  The image of Dustin Hoffman in the broken glasses tells me everything I need to know about the film, a thriller about a man pushed to the edge of reason when they move to a small village where the locals prove anything but hospitable.
James Marsden fills in for Hoffman in the upcoming remake, and now dons the broken glasses for a remake of the iconic poster.  There are a few twists: Screen Gems found a way to get Alexander SkarsgĂ„rd’s beautiful Swedish face in the picture and added the slogan “Everyone has a breaking point.”  The image can’t be as powerful four decades later, but this is smarter than your average poster.  Kate Bosworth also stars in Straw Dogs, opening on September 16.  See the new poster and its inspiration after the jump. http://collider.com/straw-dogs-poster/96490/

Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED Opens Christmas Day 2012

by Brendan Bettinger   Posted: June 14th, 2011

How cool is your family?  For instance, if the new Quentin Tarantino movie opened on Christmas Day, would you have to ditch the folks for a couple hours, or could you bring them along?  The Weinstein Company will put these family ties to the test with a December 25, 2012 release date for Django Unhcained [Box Office Mojo].  The supporting cast is mostly set: Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, and Leonardo DiCaprio are all on board or about to be barring any sticking points in negotiations.  Much less certain is who will play Django, the freed slave taught the tricks of the trade by a German bounty hunter (Waltz) to liberate his wife from an evil plantation owner (DiCaprio).  Will Smith was the early frontrunner, though a deal has not come easy.  More recently, Idris Elba, Chris Tucker, and Jamie Foxx came up as possible DjangosShowbiz 411 hears Foxx is the closest to the role, but all is heresay until it’s in the trades.  Production is scheduled for later this summer or early fall — with the finish line in place, we’ll meet our Django soon enough.
Christmas Day is a Tuesday in 2012.  As of this writing, Django Unchained has the holiday all to itself, but Hunter Killer, Life of Pi, and The Lone Ranger open the Friday before, December 21.

Relativity to Distribute MACHINE GUN PREACHER This Fall; Paramount Picks Up Comedy Spec BASTARDS

by Brendan Bettinger   Posted: June 14th, 2011

Lionsgate had tentative plans to release Machine Gun Preacher in the fall, but three other films — Warrior, Abduction, and Safe — will occupy the studio’s resources with September/October release dates.  Relativity’s fall is lighter, with Shark Night 3D in September and Immortals in November — as newcomers to distribution, the studio is eager for product to push.  The schedules worked out such that, per Risky Business, Lionsgate will hand off the domestic release for Machine Gun Preacher to Relativity.  (Lionsgate will still handle international distribution.)  Gerard Butler and Michelle Monaghan in the biopic about Sam Childers, “a drug-dealing biker who found God and became an activist on behalf of child soldiers in Sudan.  Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace) directed the $30 million independent production from a script by Jason Keller.  No official release date is set, but Machine Gun Preacher is still on the agenda for Fall 2011.

David O. Russell Circling MALEFICENT, Talks About Upcoming Projects and Why He Left UNCHARTED

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 14th, 2011

When a director is coming off an Oscar nomination, or better yet a win, he or she automatically has some clout in choosing his or her next project.  It’s a tough decision, and you may only get once chance, so you best choose wisely. David O. Russell, coming off his Oscar nomination for The Fighter, seems to be circling 1,000 projects at the moment, and another one has just been added to the list.  THR reports that Russell is currently one of the directors being considered to helm Disney’s fantasy flick Maleficent. Angelina Jolie is attached to star, and Tim Burton was previously set to direct before backing out last month.
Disney is looking at a number of directors for the job (Darren Aronofsky and David Yates have been mentioned) and Russell has plenty on his plate already, so this deal is far from a sure thing, but it appears Russell is on the list of candidates.  The Fighter director recently dropped out as director of Uncharted, and today he explained a bit about why he left that project.  Hit the jump to check out what he had to say, which includes updates on a number of his upcoming projects. http://collider.com/david-o-russell-maleficent-uncharted/96494/

Akiva Schaffer May Direct NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH With Ben Stiller Circling Starring Role

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: June 14th, 2011

It looks like The Lonely Island member and Hot Rod director Akiva Schaffer may next helm a high-profile sci-fi comedy. Schaffer, who currently serves as a writer on SNL, has been offered the director’s chair on Fox’s long-in-development comedy Neighborhood Watch. Heat Vision reports that Schaffer has the offer, and that Ben Stiller is circling one of the starring roles. The plot revolves around a suburban neighborhood watch group that serves as a front for some dads just wanting some time away from their families. You know, for fantasy baseball and such. Things go awry, however, when the stumble upon a plot to destroy the world.
Originally, Peter Segal (50 First Dates) was going to direct the flick, but it appears that he’s now left the project. Last we heard, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg had come aboard to perform a rewrite of the script. Hit the jump for more. http://collider.com/akiva-schaffer-neighborhood-watch-ben-stiller/96438/

Ben Stiller in Talks for THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY Remake

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: April 7th, 2011

A remake of the 1947 film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (based on a short story by James Thurber) has been kicking around in development for years now.  Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, and Sacha Baron Cohen have all eyed the lead role at some point, but even such considerable star power failed to overcome a reportedly problematic script.  Ben Stiller is the latest actor to set his sights on the role, and Deadline hears the actor is committed enough to plan Secret Life as his next film.
Steve Conrad (The Pursuit of Happyness) scripted a page-one rewrite, and won Stiller over with his fresh take on the material.  Though the project has previously sirened the likes of Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, and (most recently) Gore Verbinski, no director is currently attached.  20th Century Fox is looking for a director who can handle action scenes and deliver a PG cut.  There are tentative plans to start filming in late fall.  Read a synopsis for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty after the break.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Also in Talks for "The Tomb"

Posted: April 8th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

We just reported that Arnold Schwarzenegger has been in talks with Lionsgate to star in "Last Stand" action film. He has already received an offer, but that doesn't mean that the movie will be his big screen return.

Variety has learned that the actor is considering another project, "The Tomb," to be directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day). The film is about a structural security expert who's framed for a crime and put in a high-security prison that he designed.

It seems that "Last Stand" will end up being Schwarzenegger's first film since leaving office. Mostly because Fuqua is getting ready to shoot his Tupac Shakur biopic and will not be available for "The Tomb" until the end of the year.

Arnold Schwarzenegger to Star in "Last Stand" Action Film?

Posted: April 8th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

It was recently revealed that Arnold Schwarzenegger may make his Hollywood return in a big screen version of his "The Governator" TV series. Now, according to a Polish distributor, the actor instead make "Last Stand" his first live-action role since leaving office.

The story will follow the exploits of a drug cartel leader who blasts his way out of a courtroom, steals a car, and heads towards the Mexican border. Schwarzenegger will play a sheriff with an inexperienced staff who becomes involved with trying to stop the cartel leader from entering Mexico after the two parties inadvertently cross paths.

Liam Neeson was originally set for the role, but left the project earlier in the year. "Last Stand" will be the first English-language film for director Kim Jee-Woon (I Saw the Devil) and is set to appear in theaters next year.

Lionsgate has already sent in their offer to Schwarzenegger's CAA agents and is now waiting to hear from them. Apparently all the major points have been negotiated.

Alfred Hitchcock's "To Catch a Thief" Remake is Moving Forward

Posted: April 8th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Paramount Pictures optioned the remake to Alfred Hitchcock's "To Catch a Thief" remake back in 2004, but it is only now that the studio is moving forward with the film.

Writer Josh Stolberg (Piranha 3D, Sorority Row, Good Luck Chuck) wrote the script with Bobby Florsheim. Neil Moritz (Fast Five, Battle: Los Angeles) is producing.

"It's exciting because it's one of my favorite Hitchcock movies," said Stolberg. "
And it was fun to come at it from a different angle – make it a little bit more modern and 'gadgety.' It's the first script that I've ever written that [encompasses] a lot of heists and action sequences."

He continued: "We just turned in the script to the studio a couple of months ago and they're working on casting now. It takes place in Santarini. It's a travelogue of the most amazing places on Earth."

Sylvester Stallone Will Direct "The Expendables" Sequel

Posted: April 8th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

About a month ago, it was reported that Sylvester Stallone had decided not to direct the sequel to "Expendables," despite making plans to reprise his role in the film.

Then came word that Stallone was in talks to star in "Headshot" and possibly direct it. While it's still unclear what will happen with "Headshot," Lionsgate has announced that Stallone will be back in the director's chair for "The Expendables 2," which is set to hit theaters on August 17th, 2012.

Very little is known about the story, but Stallone previously said that he would like the sequel to focus on new characters and reduce the role of older ones. Bruce Willis will get a bigger role and Jean-Claude Van Damme will likely join the cast.

Duncan Jones in Talks to Direct "Wolverine" Sequel

Posted: April 7th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Darren Aronofsky was all set to direct the upcoming "Wolverine" sequel before he dropped out, claiming that he would not be able to travel overseas due to family issues.

The search for his replacement immediately began and Hugh Jackman promised that a director of Aronofsky's caliber would be brought on. At one point David Slade (30 Days of Night) was considered, but he recently signed on for "Daredevil" remake and "The Last Voyage of Demeter."

Deadline has now learned that Duncan Jones (Source Code, Moon) is in talks. There's no word regarding how far the talks have progressed.

As of right now, Jones has yet to sign on for any other project. Before Zack Snyder, however, he was considered to direct the "Superman" reboot.

Drew Barrymore to Helm Romantic Comedy HOW TO BE SINGLE
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 15th, 2011
Actress/producer/director Drew Barrymore is poised to helm her second feature film with an adaptation of Liz Tuccillo’s novel How to Be Single. The New Line romantic comedy follows the “love lives and break-ups of a group of New Yorkers over the span of ten years.” THR reports that Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn (Valentine’s Day) will script the adaptation.

This marks a reunion of sorts for the team that put together last year’s He’s Just Not That Into You, with Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen producing, and the screenwriting team of Silverstein and Kohn once again writing the adaptation. Barrymore made her directorial debut with 2009’s Whip It starring Ellen Page and Kristin Wiig, which was met with rather warm critical praise. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel by Liz Tuccillo.

Director Paul Feig Developing a Comedy for Jon Hamm
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: March 15th, 2011
I hate Jon Hamm. He’s devastatingly handsome, a fantastic dramatic actor, and — as those who have seen/heard Hamm on SNL, 30 Rock, or Doug Benson’s I Love Movies podcast can attest — a very funny man. What a jerk. Yet director Paul Feig, who worked with Hamm on the upcoming wedding comedy Bridesmaids, finds these qualities endearing. A working cut of Bridemsaids just premiered at SXSW (to positive reception), where Feig revealed to 24 Frames he is working on a new project to capitalize on Hamm’s comic gifts:

“[Hamm] is such a comedy nerd. He will quote lines from Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy. You’re quoting something even I can’t quote! He’s always wanted to do comedy. One of the next things I’m developing a project for him to star in. I think he’s so funny. He’s like Cary Grant to me.”

As the creator of Freaks and Geeks and frequent episodic director of Arrested Development and The Office, Feig too is overflowing with comic credibility. Feig even directed a season one episode of Mad Men, to prove that Hamm isn’t the only one who goes both ways. We don’t know the logline or even the development stage of the project — but based on personnel alone, I’m all in. Bridesmaids opens May 13.

"30 Days of Night" Director in Talks for "Daredevil 2"
Posted: March 16th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

David Slade (Twilight Saga: Eclipse, 30 Days of Night, Hard Candy) is in talks to direct 20th Century Fox's upcoming "Daredevil" movie, which will pick up where Ben Affleck's 2003 film left off. Affleck is not involved with the new movie.

THR says that the studio has yet to hire a writer, but we previously reported that David Scarpa (The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Last Castle) has been in negotiations to continue the franchise.

Sources say the new story line will be the adaptation of Frank Miller's "Born Again" comic series, which had the Kingpin learn the identity of the superhero and begin to systematically destroy his life.

"Scream 5" is Already in the Works
Posted: March 16th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

STYD is reporting that Dimension Films is searching for writers to pen their fifth "Scream" installment, despite that the fourth film has yet to hit theaters. This confirms that the studio is interested in developing an entire new trilogy.

When "Scream 4" was announced, Kevin Williamson (Scream, Scream 2) was writing the second trilogy, but was recently replaced by Ehren Kruger (Scream 3). Since Dimension is looking for new writers, it looks like neither Williamson or Kruger will be back.

Craven recently commented on the studio replacing Williamson. He said: "In some ways it's a Wes Craven film, and in way it's not entirely, because it's not a script I have control of. It's ultimately controlled by what the studio wants in the script. My job is much more bringing whatever experience and expertise and creativity I can. Look, there was a bumpy period when things shifted over from Kevin to Ehren. I signed up to do a script by Kevin and unfortunately that didn’t go all the way through the shooting. But it certainly is Kevin's script and concept and ideas and themes."

He added that if the studio wants him to direct the sixth film, he'll would be willing to do it.

Ben Stiller Says "Zoolander 2" is Already Filming
Posted: March 16th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Fans have been waiting for a "Zoolander" sequel for years, but Paramount Pictures never felt comfortable investing in a follow-up to a movie that never became a major hit. But then Justin Theroux (Iron Man 2, Tropic Thunder) wrote a script for "Zoolander 2" and things started moving forward.

Now in an interview with Closer magazine, Ben Stiller has revealed that the sequel is already in production. "We're filming the 'Zoolander' sequel at the moment," he said. "Derek is going to be back bigger and better than before - no catwalk is safe!"

Stiller added that Owen Wilson will also return to reprise his role. "It's ten years later and most of it is set in Europe," he explained. "I don't want to give away too much, but it's basically Derek and Hansel ten years later."

Mark Wahlberg is Now Working on "The Fighter" Sequel
Posted: March 15th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Both Melissa Leo and Christian Bale won Oscars for their performances in "The Fighter," but the film took years to get going, mostly because financiers didn't believe it could become a success.

Now that the film has grossed $118 million on a $25 million budget, Mark Wahlberg has been trying to convince everyone that it's a good idea to make a sequel.

He said: "I got bit by the bug, and now I’m trying to plant the idea in everyone's head that we should do — not five or six [installments] like 'Rocky' — but one more because the big thing that Micky Ward was famous for was his three epic battles with Arturo Gatti. So we're talking about possibly taking one more run at it."

Wahlberg never had trouble getting actors attached to "The Fighter," and doesn't believe he's have trouble this time either. "Everybody had such an amazing experience making the movie that I can't imagine they wouldn't want to go back," he explained. "But it's still kind of in the early stages."

season_of_the_witch_movie_poster_01Here’s the official synopsis for Season of the Witch:
Oscar winner Nicolas Cage (National Treasure, Ghost Rider) and Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Hellboy II, Sons of Anarchy) star in this supernatural action adventure about a heroic Crusader and his closest friend who return home after decades of fierce fighting, only to find their world destroyed by the Plague. The church elders, convinced that a girl accused of being a witch is responsible for the devastation, command the two to transport the strange girl to a remote monastery where monks will perform an ancient ritual to rid the land of her curse. They embark on a harrowing, action-filled journey that will test their strength and courage as they discover the girl’s dark secret and find themselves battling a terrifyingly powerful force that will determine the fate of the world.
The years of brutal warfare in the name of God have stripped Behmen (Cage) of his taste for bloodshed-and his loyalty to the Church. Looking forward to a quiet retirement, Behmen and his comrade-in-arms Felson (Perlman) are bewildered to find their homeland deserted, unaware that Europe has been decimated by the Black Plague.
While searching for food and supplies at the Palace at Marburg, the two knights are apprehended and called before the local Cardinal (Christopher Lee) to explain their unscheduled return from the East. The dying Cardinal threatens the pair with prison for desertion, unless they agree to a dangerous mission. The Cardinal’s dungeon holds a young woman (Claire Foy) accused of being a witch who brings the Plague with her. They can redeem themselves only by accompanying the girl to a distant abbey where she is to stand trial.
The girl’s brutal mistreatment in prison and powerlessness against the accusations of church officials move Behman. Convinced she is merely a convenient scapegoat and fearing she will be condemned without a fair hearing, he agrees to escort her on the treacherous journey.
In addition to his loyal companion Felson, he is accompanied by a well-traveled conman who knows the countryside (Stephen Graham), an eager young man who aspires to knighthood (Robert Sheehan), a bitter knight who has lost his family to the Plague (Ulrich Thomsen) and a naĂŻve priest (Stephen Campbell Moore).

RABBIT HOLE Review

by Bill Graham    Posted: December 19th, 2010

Rabbit Hole is simplistic on the outside. But once opened, the honest portrayal of grief can leave one with a myriad of emotions that strengthen the further you get from the film. Recovering from the loss of a child is a process that people deal with in different ways, and that strain can pull the fibers out of a marriage and fray the family around them. Yet, riding performances that examine the depth of real human emotion and dimension, this isn’t the one-trick pony that it could have been. Instead of treating the theme with nothing but morose sadness, director John Cameron Mitchell utilizes levity and threads it throughout with an earnestness that is at once unfamiliar yet comforting. So hit the jump to follow me further down Rabbit Hole.
Becca (Nicole Kidman) and Howie (Aaron Eckhart) lost their son eight months prior, and their relationship is strained as Becca struggles to recover. Becca’s mom, Nat (Dianne Wiest), has a familiarity with the grief, but the two are constantly clashing; they come from different mindsets despite their blood connection. Becca is trying to move forward in her own way; she contains the storm of emotions within herself instead of displaying them to the outside world. To the people around her this seems like she isn’t grieving at all. The world continues to move forward despite the loss, and Howie and Becca’s relationship is pulled in various directions. Will Becca finally find resolution — if there is such a thing — or will the grief destroy her bond with her husband irrevocably?rabbit_hole_movie_poster_01
Based on the Tony-nominated Broadway play by David Lindsay-Abaire, who adapted it for the screen, Rabbit Hole explores the typical paths of recovery, but group therapy sessions and talk of a greater purpose from God set Becca on edge. Instead of giving easy answers, the film questions how you can move on without those common mainstays. They aren’t for everyone, and Becca has to forge her own path. However, the film never assaults you with those typical paths of resolution; they are briefly touched on and then the narrative pushes onward. Helping to propel the film forward are the performances from Wiest, Kidman, and Eckhart.
Cinema often shows one side of people, and they are generally painted with broad brushstrokes; good or bad, closed off or open, sympathetic or cold. Yet, the three main characters in Rabbit Hole are shown to have some flaw or blemish that defines them while also having appeal. Howie has a powerful love for his wife, but their struggles emotionally and physically test his loyalty and he shows he has a quick temper. Eckhart has two stunning scenes where he blows his cool and there is an eerie calm after the storm. He is trying to help Becca move forward, but struggles to grasp her method. Meanwhile, Kidman displays inner strength and stubbornness that make her endearing, yet she is prone to displays of physical and verbal aggression. These moments are powerful because they shatter her calm and collected demeanor.
Everyone seems to be walking on eggshells around her, and she constantly has to reassure her friends and family that what they said didn’t offend her — that she’s fine — when she is still in turmoil on the inside. Yet, the one person she never reassures is her own mother, who has suffered similar grief. Nat is prone to speaking her mind and when under the influence of alcohol, perhaps oversteps her bounds. There is a very specific difference between their common losses, but Nat has an inspired dialog that puts things in perspective towards the end of the film that leaves a haunting visual.
Meanwhile, humor is intelligently used to both touch and relieve the audience at various points. Laughter can be a coping mechanism, and telling a funny story can give a brief respite from the burden of loss. When Nat tells a light story to Becca, and they both end up laughing about it, you can see how close they can be at times. When Becca and Howie are at group and someone brings up God’s plan, she lets out a brief tirade that leaves audiences snickering at the morose situation. These are the small touches that lend the film earnestness uncommon for such a dramatic theme.
Another small touch that is utilized brilliantly is the music by Anton Sanko and how it can disappear in the middle of intense scenes. A quiet moment in the park is accented by chirping birds and breezes. Additionally, after a few explosive scenes there is a notable lack of score, emphasizing the ups and downs of the journey. All of these tiny details are what round out the experience of Rabbit Hole, and while based on a play, the film never feels like anything less than a well-funded drama.
Each emotional peak in Rabbit Hole is earned and steadily built up, and the performances are rich and multi-dimensioned. While a number of clichĂ©s are thrown at the couple, the navigation of those bumps is what keeps the film from feeling on rails. Humor can go a long way to soften blows, but the emotional core is never sacrificed in the search for a laugh. This isn’t an uproarious film by any means, but the short runtime coupled with the interwoven lightness creates a potent dramatic narrative that leaves a lasting impression. Rabbit Hole is currently in limited release and will continually expand in the coming weeks.

Interactive Trailer for LITTLE FOCKERS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 20th, 2010

This past year, we’ve seen the rise of “Interactive Trailers”, which allow viewers to stop the trailer and go deeper into the film, whether it’s with director’s commentary, photos, or fun facts.  The “i-Trailer” was done well with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and The Social Network, and for those films, both of which reference interactive mediums (video games and the Internet, respectively), an interactive trailer makes sense.  Why Universal decided to make an interactive trailer for Little Fockers makes somewhat less sense.  Unless one of the behind-the-scenes clips is someone handing Robert De Niro a paycheck, I don’t think anyone really needs to go deeper into Meet the Parents universe.
But if you’re just bonkers for this franchise, then hit the jump to check out the interactive trailer.  Little Fockers stars Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner, Owen Wilson, Teri Polo, Barbara Streisand, Jessica Alba, and Dustin Hoffman.  It opens December 22nd.
Here’s the official synopsis for Little Fockers:
The test of wills between Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro) and Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) escalates to new heights of comedy in the third installment of the blockbuster series-Little Fockers. Laura Dern, Jessica Alba and Harvey Keitel join the returning all-star cast for a new chapter of the worldwide hit franchise. It has taken 10 years, two little Fockers with wife Pam (Polo) and countless hurdles for Greg to finally get “in” with his tightly wound father-in-law, Jack. After the cash-strapped dad takes a job moonlighting for a drug company, however, Jack’s suspicions about his favorite male nurse come roaring back. When Greg and Pam’s entire clan-including Pam’s lovelorn ex, Kevin (Owen Wilson)-descends for the twins’ birthday party, Greg must prove to the skeptical Jack that he’s fully capable as the man of the house. But with all the misunderstandings, spying and covert missions, will Greg pass Jack’s final test and become the family’s next patriarch… or will the circle of trust be broken for good?

Kirsten Dunst: 'Somewhere' Screening with Parker Posey
Kirsten Dunst and Parker Posey come out to support Stephen Dorff at a screening of his new movie Somewhere at NYC’s Tribeca Grand Hotel on Sunday (December 12).
In the 28-year-old actress’ latest movie, All Good Things, she plays a type of person that she has never played before. “I think people will be surprised to see me in this role,” she told USA Today. “It was very demanding, but I knew I could enrich it.”
Kirsten is currently preparing to work on a film version of Jack Kerouac’s novel On the Road. “It’s a guy’s story,” she admits, “but the women had wild times, too. Their roles are smaller, but it’s an epic and a good thing to be part of.”
