Exclusive: Emily Blunt on Why She Hasn’t Done a Superhero Movie

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 23rd, 2011

Whenever a big superhero project is announced, whether it be Zack Snyder’s Man in Steel reboot, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, or pretty much just any big budget movie involving crime-fighting and costumes, an inevitable “short-list” of actresses pops up full of names that are being considered to take on the female lead role in the film. This list usually has the same 5 or 6 actresses on it, and most of the time Emily Blunt’s name is included. Such big budget films that Blunt’s name has been attached to include Captain America: The First Avenger and Iron Man 2, just to name a few.
Steve recently had the chance to sit down with the actress doing press for her new film The Adjustment Bureau.  Towards the end of the interview, he asked her if she thinks she’ll ever be in a Marvel movie, given her frequency on their short-lists.  While some try and deflect these kinds of questions, Blunt was very honest with her answer.  For more, hit the jump:

THE KING’S SPEECH Director Tom Hooper May Next Tackle LES MISERABLES; Was Offered IRON MAN 3

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 23rd, 2011

Director Tom Hooper is currently in the last leg of the award season circuit for his Oscar juggernaut The King’s Speech. The film is poised to be a big winner come Sunday night, and there’s also a very good chance Hooper will walk away with the Best Director award (he won the DGA last month). Well now he’s starting to look ahead to his next project, and he might be taking on yet another decidedly European tale: a new version of the classic novel/Broadway musical Les Miserables.
24 Frames reports that the director is weighing an offer to helm a big-budget musical version of the story. Working Title, which also produced Atonement, is producing the film. More interesting, however, is a mention in the report that Hooper was offered the directing gig for Marvel’s Iron Man 3 before turning it down (Writer/director Shane Black eventually landed the job). A bold choice, I’d say, given that the director is decidedly fresh, with only a few low-key dramas under his belt. What do you think? Should Hooper follow up his Oscar-bait turn with Les Mis? Would he have been right for IM3?

Patrick Wilson and James Marsden in Talks for LOFT

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 23rd, 2011

Patrick Wilson and James Marsden are the cream of the crop for on-screen nice guys.  So obviously if they join forces, it will be a very dark and disturbing movie.  Variety reports that Wilson and Marsden are in talks to star in the indie thriller Loft, a remake of a 2008 Belgian film directed by Erik Van Looy.  Loft is a whodunit about five men who posess the only keys to a penthouse apartment designed for their adulterous needs.  The timeshare setup is strained when one friend discovers a dead woman shackled to the bed.  Van Looy will return to direct the English-language version of his film from an adapted script by Wesley Strick (A Nightmare on Elm Street).  Anonymous Content hopes to get Loft in front of cameras before the end of the year.

James Franco in Talks to Star in Sam Raimi’s OZ, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL After Johnny Depp Passes

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 4th, 2011

And the revolving door on the production of Oz, The Great and Powerful keeps on spinning. Just two weeks ago, it was reported that Johnny Depp was in talks to star in the film as the titular Oz following Robert Downey Jr.’s exit from the project a few months back. Well, now it looks like Depp ultimately passed on the film late last night and producers are now in talks with James Franco to tackle the role of the Wizard.
Sam Raimi (the first three Spider-Man films) is set to direct the prequel/re-imaging of The Wizard of Oz which would tell the story of how the Wizard came to end up in Oz and become the all-powerful Wizard. Heat Vision reports that the film is a top priority for Disney and producer Joe Roth hopes to start shooting during the second half of this year. Franco seems a bit of an odd choice, but he usually knocks every role he takes on out of the park. If he ends up joining the film, it’ll be interesting to see his take on the character. Until the Academy loosens up about bullets, boobs, and inexplicable Nicolas Cage hairpieces, we can only dream of a fantastical world where Drive Angry 3D has a shot at Best Picture nomination.  Still, the marketing folks behind the movie decided to have a little laugh and give the movie a red-band trailer with all of the prestige of an Oscar film and none of the dignity.
Hit the jump to check out the NSFW red-band trailer.  Drive Angry 3D also stars Amber Heard and William Fichtner.  The film opens February 25th.

We’ve been sent two exclusive stills from the upcoming 80s flick Take Me Home Tonight.  The film stars Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Teresa Palmer, Dan Fogler, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Chris Pratt.  I’m a big fan of this cast, especially Pratt whose lovable performance as dimwit Andy Dwyer is one of the many reasons you should be watching Parks and Recreation.

Naomi Watts in Talks to Star in Werner Herzog’s QUEEN OF THE DESERT

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 3rd, 2011

Naomi Watts is in “serious discussions” with director Werner Herzog to star in his upcoming film Queen of the Desert.  According to Vulture, the story is based on the life of British woman Gertrude Bell, “who was alternately a traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century. While only a commoner herself, Bell was nonetheless a kingmaker, helping found the modern states of Iraq and Jordan and installing their first rulers, King Abdullah and King Faisal.”
Watts is currently filming The Impossible with Ewan McGregor, which follows a family in Thailand during the 2004 tsunami.  After that, she’s moving on to costar in Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar.  Vulture reports that once she wraps on that film, she’ll take a short break and likely move on to Queen of the Desert.

Casting Call: Orlando Bloom, Imgoen Poots and Kerry Condon Join THE LAUREATE; Dane DeHaan Cast in John Hillcoat’s THE WETTEST COUNTY IN THE WORLD

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 28th, 2011

A couple casting stories for you today. Orlando Bloom, Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later) and Kerry Condon (The Last Station) have joined the cast of writer/director William Nunez’s feature film debut The Laureate. The film tracks the open love triangle between war poet Robert Graves (Bloom), his artist wife Nancy Nicholson (Condon) and American poet Laura Riding (Poots). Screen Daily (via The Playlist) reports that Bloom will topline the film for Media 8, which plans to look for financiers at the European Film Market next month.
Hit the jump for news on Dane DeHaan joining Shia LaBeuof, Tom Hardy and Jessica Chastain in John Hillcoat’s The Wettest County in the World.

Newcomer Dane DeHaan (HBO’s In Treatment, True Blood) is the latest actor to join director John Hillcoat’s (The Road) adaptation of Matt Bondourant’s period thriller The Wettest County in the World. The screenplay from Nick Cave (The Proposition) centers on “a family of Prohibition-era bootleggers, and crimes committed by and against them.” We previously told you that Shia Labeouf and Tom Hardy had joined the cast as the middle and youngest brother, respectively, with Labeouf’s role being the lead in the film. Rising star Jessica Chastain (Terrence Malick’s upcoming Tree of Life) also stars in the film as Hardy’s love interest.
Up and Comers reports (via The Playlist) that DeHaan will play teenage bootlegger Cricket, who is crippled by rickets and is Labeouf’s partner-in-crime. Production is set to get underway on the film next month. Here’s a synopsis of Matt Bondourant’s novel:
Based on the true story of Matt Bondurant’s grandfather and two granduncles, The Wettest County in the World is a gripping tale of brotherhood, greed, and murder. The Bondurant Boys were a notorious gang of roughnecks and moonshiners who ran liquor through Franklin County, Virginia, during Prohibition and in the years after. Forrest, the eldest brother, is fierce, mythically indestructible, and the consummate businessman; Howard, the middle brother, is an ox of a man besieged by the horrors he witnessed in the Great War; and Jack, the youngest, has a taste for luxury and a dream to get out of Franklin. Driven and haunted, these men forge a business, fall in love, and struggle to stay afloat as they watch their family die, their father’s business fail, and the world they know crumble beneath the Depression and drought.
White mule, white lightning, firewater, popskull, wild cat, stump whiskey, or rotgut — whatever you called it, Franklin County was awash in moonshine in the 1920s. When Sherwood Anderson, the journalist and author of Winesburg, Ohio, was covering a story there, he christened it the “wettest county in the world.” In the twilight of his career, Anderson finds himself driving along dusty red roads trying to find the Bondurant brothers, piece together the clues linking them to “The Great Franklin County Moonshine Conspiracy,” and break open the silence that shrouds Franklin County. With director Patrick Lussier’s (My Bloody Valentine) 3D revenge flick Drive Angry 3D getting released February 25, Summit has released a very cool motion poster to help promote the flick. Starring Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, William Fichtner, Billy Burke, and David Morse, Drive Angry 3D is about a tough as nails criminal (Cage) who breaks out of Hell on a quest for redemption. Fichtner plays a character simply named “The Accountant”, a mysterious demonic agent sent to retrieve Cage and return him to the fiery depths from which he came.  I did a set visit last year and everything I learned while there tells me this is going to be an extremely fun ride that you’re going to want to take.

When he’s not busy punching women/screaming about bees, Nicolas Cage stars in movies. With each new Nicolas Cage movie, comes a new hairstyle. I’m sorry, did I say hairstyle? I meant awesome hairstyle.  Next up for Cage is Patrick Lussier’s (My Bloody Valentine 3D) revenge thriller Drive Angry 3D, featuring a brand-new awesome hairstyle. The film stars Cage, Amber Heard (Zombieland), David Morse (Disturbia) and William Fichtner (Black Hawk Down).
We previously brought you the first images from the film, which look decidedly bad ass. Cage stars as Milton, the tough as nails criminal who breaks out of Hell on a quest for redemption. Fichtner plays a character simply named “The Accountant”, a mysterious demonic agent sent to retrieve Milton and return him to the fiery depths from which he came.  Hit the jump to check out the full poster. Today we have a new image plus a definitely-NSFW clip from the upcoming Nicolas Cage action flick Drive Angry 3D.  The image is SFW unless your workplace doesn’t allow you to look at images of Amber Heard smiling at a bloodied-up Nicolas Cage.  However, unless you work in a very lax environment, your bosses and co-workers will probably frown on you seeing a clip of Nicolas Cage having sex with a naked chick (even though he’s fully clothed) while he has a gunfight with folks coming to kill him.  Watch the clip when you get home because it makes the movie look like a pile of trashy fun.
