Leonardo DiCaprio Is Closer to Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED Than Will Smith; Idris Elba, Chris Tucker, Jamie Foxx Rumored for Django

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: June 7th, 2011

No actor is officially confirmed for Django Unchained, the latest from Quentin Tarantino, but the cast is starting to take shape. According to Deadline, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson are expected to sign on.  Leonardo DiCaprio is about to enter negotiations to play the villain, . That doesn’t give us the titular character, though.  Will Smith was the first major contender for the role of Django, “a slave who is liberated and taught the tricks of the trade by a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter (Waltz).”  Negotiations are stuck in first gear, and we’re probably kidding ourselves to expect the super image-conscious Smith to sign on for such a gleefully controversial role.
Deadline hears Smith likely won’t sign on; possible replacements include Idris Elba, Chris Tucker, and Jamie Foxx.  That’s an eclectic list, somewhere between intriguing and Name Three Black Actors Who Aren’t Will Smith That Headlined Box Office Hits in the Past Decade.  More after the jump: http://collider.com/leonardo-dicaprio-chris-tucker-django-unchained/95282/

Reese Witherspoon to Produce and Possibly Star in DreamWorks’ WHO INVITED HER?

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 7th, 2011

DreamWorks has emerged victorious from a bidding war for novelist Sascha Rothchild’s comedy pitch Who Invited Her? with Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon set to produce and potentially star. Variety reports that the project centers on a woman who invites herself to a male bachelor party weekend and will purportedly follow the shenanigans that inevitably ensue. If Witherspoon does indeed end up in Who Invited Her?, it will not be the first starring/producing double-duty pulled by the actress as she is also filling both shoes on the upcoming action/comedy This Means War also starring Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. In addition to her work on Who Invited Her?, Rothchild is also writing and executive producing an adaptation of her book How to Get Divorced by 30 over at Universal. http://collider.com/reese-witherspoon-who-invited-her/95248/

Chris O’Dowd, Lena Dunham, Charlyne Yi and Wyatt Russell Join Judd Apatow’s KNOCKED UP Spin-Off

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 7th, 2011

Judd Apatow is filling out the cast for his next directorial effort, with Bridesmaids star Chris O’Dowd, Lena Dunham (director of Tiny Furniture), Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up) and Wyatt Russell currently in negotiations to join the untitled ensemble comedy. Written by Apatow, the film is a spinoff of sorts from his 2007 comedy Knocked Up, focusing on Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann’s characters. Variety reports that O’Dowd and Dunham will play employees of Rudd’s indie record company, Russell will portray a hockey player, and Yi will reprise her role as Jodi from Knocked Up.
The cast for the untitled comedy currently includes Rudd, Mann, Megan Fox and Albert Brooks. O’Dowd is just coming off the massive success of the Apatow-produced Bridesmaids. His turn as Wiig’s love interest in the film has him fielding a flood of offers, and deservedly so. No other plot details on Apatow’s flick are known at the moment, but it’s set to be released in December 2012.

Craig Mazin to Write THE HANGOVER PART III
by Matt Goldberg Posted: May 31st, 2011
The Hangover Part II co-writer Craig Mazin has been hired to write the script for The Hangover Part III. Warner Bros. is wasting no time in moving forward on a sequel to the box-office record-breaker and I’m honestly a little surprised that they hadn’t already started moving on a new film when the Hangover 2 was tracking through the roof. Mazin, whose previous credits include Scary Movie 3 and 4, co-wrote The Hangover Part II with director Todd Phillips and screenwriter Scot Armstrong (Semi-Pro), although “wrote” may not be the best way to describe it. I’m not sure if copy-pasting the script from the first film and making minor changes counts as “writing”.

When Steve spoke with Phillips during the press junket for Hangover Part II, Phillips said that Part III would be the finale to the series but would be a new template and a new idea. Hit the jump for his full quote. [The Tracking Board via The Wrap].

Rumor: Leonardo DiCaprio and Idris Elba Circling Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED?
by Matt Goldberg Posted: May 31st, 2011
Tarantino fans are hungry for any information regarding his next film, Django Unchained. However, while deals are still being done, we’re all left to wonder how the film will be cast. We already know that Christoph Waltz will play a bounty hunter who mentors an escaped slave named Django and then teams up with him to free Django’s wife from an evil plantation owner. Rumors are now springing forth from the Twitter about casting for Django and the plantation owner, Calvin Candie. Yesterday, tweets from Idris Elba hinted (in the vaguest of terms) that he might be playing Django even though Will Smith was tipped as Tarantino’s top choice for the role. Today, Creative Screenwriting magazine Senior Editor Jeff Goldsmith tweeted

“Casting Rumor: Leonardo DiCaprio WILL play villian [sic] Calvin Candie in [Quentin] Tarantino‘s “Django Unchained”! QT wanted him for [Inglourious Basterds] & now has him!”

Jamie Campbell Bower Play Jace Wayland in THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS
by Matt Goldberg Posted: May 31st, 2011
A couple weeks ago, we reported that Jamie Campbell Bower (The Twilight Saga: New Moon), Ed Speleers (Eragon), and Leebo Freeman were all in the running for the male lead in Scott Charles Stewart’s adaptation of the young adult book series The Mortal Instruments. Deadline is now reporting that Bower has won that race and will play Jace Wayland. Jace is a member of a group known as “Shadowhunters” who are warriors devoted to ridding the world of demons. The book’s protagonist Clary Fray (played by Lily Collins and I swear I’m not making up these character names) witnesses a murder and is eventually drawn into the world of the Shadowhunters. In the synopsis, Jace is described as “a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk.” Is the tagline for this movie going to be “This totally isn’t anything like Twilight, but if you liked Twilight, you should see this movie.”

Earlier this month, we reported that Adam Shankman’s musical Rock of Ages had lost Alec Baldwin, and losing Alec Baldwin is sad news for any production.  But cheer up!  It turns out that report was false because Shankman has tweeted a photo from the set showing Baldwin in hippie garb alongside a lollipop-brandishing Russell Brand.  The context of the photo?  Unknown to people like myself who haven’t seen the Broadway musical upon which the movie is based.

First Look at ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 9th, 2011

abraham-lincoln-vampire-hunter-movie-image-slice-01
The first image from Timur Bekmambetov’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has gone online.  In case you couldn’t get the plot from the title, the movie is about America’s 16th President secret life as a vampire slayer.  Based off the book by Seth Grahame-Smith, the story re-imagines that Lincoln’s mother and grandfather were killed by a vampire and that the president’s resolve to end slavery was due in part to the “fact” that vampires were involved with the slave trade.  However, he also learns that there are good vampires and bad vampires and that he can’t simply just kill them all willy-nilly.
Hit the jump for the image and to learn how the production is devoted to historical accuracy in this incredibly silly story.  The film stars Benjamin Walker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anthony Mackie, Dominic Cooper, Alan Tudyk, Jimmi Simpson, and Refus Sewell.  Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter opens in 3D on June 22, 2012.

International Rights for Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED Go to Sony in Effort to Get Will Smith to Star

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 9th, 2011

The Weinstein Company and Quentin Tarantino have selected Sony Pictures to internationally distribute Django Unchained.  While Universal, which handled foreign distribution for Inglourious Basterds, lobbied hard for the film, sources tell Deadline that the movie went to Sony in an effort to sign Will Smith to the lead role.  Smith has a long history with the studio dating back to 1997’s Men in Black, and as we reported on Friday, Tarantino has offered Smith the role of slave-turned-bounty-hunter Django.  The project is being billed as a “Southern”, taking the tropes of a Western and transplanting them to the American south as an attempt to look at the region’s ugly history of racism and slavery.
The role would certainly be a far cry from Smith’s upcoming film, Men in Black III, and a huge risk for the actor, but it would be unlike anything else he’s ever done in his career.  If Smith signs on, he’ll join Christoph Waltz who plays a German bounty hunter that trains Django and assists him in his quest to free his enslaved wife from a plantation owner.

Rob Marshall to Direct Johnny Depp in Remake of THE THIN MAN; John DeLuca to Produce

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 9th, 2011

Last year, we reported that Johnny Depp wanted to reunite with his Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall for a new adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s The Thin Man.  We have now received a press release confirming that Marshall is on board to direct and that John DeLuca (Nine) will produce through the duo’s LUCAMAR Productions company.  While I was hoping that Marshall would direct the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked, it’s possible that the project is stuck so far down in development hell that there’s no way anyone can get to it.  And that being said, Marshall is a talented director and I think Depp is a great fit for detective-turned-socialite Nick Charles.
Now the questions become “When will this shoot in relation to The Lone Ranger?” and “Which actress would make a good Nora Charles?”  Hit the jump for the press release.

Joaquin Phoenix Joins Paul Thomas Anderson’s Untitled Religious Drama; The Weinstein Company to Distribute Film Worldwide

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 9th, 2011

After looking rather dead last September, Paul Thomas Anderson’s untitled religious drama was resurrected this past February when producer Megan Ellison (True Grit) and her Annapurna Productions came on board to finance the picture.  Deadline now reports that Joaquin Phoenix has been confirmed play Freddie Sutton, an alcoholic drifter who becomes right-hand man to Lancaster Dodd, a charismatic intellectual known as The Master (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, who’s been attached to the film from the beginning). Earlier drafts of the story were overtly based on Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, but that has reportedly changed.   According to Deadline, “[Anderson] has greatly overhauled the script and now, Hoffman stars as a man who returns after witnessing the horrors of WWII and tries to rediscover who he is in post-war America. He creates a belief system, something that catches on with other lost souls.”
Deadline is also reporting that Anderson is now considering actresses Madisen Beaty (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) Amy Adams, Lena Endre (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), and Laura Dern for roles in the film.  Hit the jump for more details on this exciting production.

The trailer for Miranda July’s The Future has gone online.  As I said in my review when I caught the film at Sundance, it’s a strange movie and that’s a large part of its charm.  The trailer does a good job of conveying the oddness of some of the plot’s elements (shelter cat as a narrator, talking moon), the offbeat humor of the main characters (played by July and Hamish Linklater), as well as the honest emotions that prevent the movie from being just a pile of quirk.

7 Movie Clips and ‘A Look Inside’ Featurette from BRIDESMAIDS

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: April 30th, 2011

With director Paul Feig’s (Freaks And Geeks)  Bridesmaids opening May 13, Universal has released seven movie clips and A Look Inside featurette.  The film stars Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Matt Lucas, Chris O’Dowd, Melissa McCarthy and Jon Hamm.
While I might still be under embargo, if I wasn’t, I’d probably tell you Bridesmaids is ridiculously funny and one of the best films I’ve seen this year.  I’d also tell you that Bridesmaids has one of the funniest scenes I’ve seen in a theater in a long time.  If you weren’t sold by the trailer or this red band trailer, trust me when I say, Bridesmaids is absolutely worth seeing and I really suggest watching it with a crowded theater.  You’ll love it.  Hit the jump for the clips and featurette, and look for interviews with the cast the week of release.

First Images of STRAW DOGS Starring James Marsden, Kate Bosworth, and Alexander Skarsgård

Screen Gems has released the first images from Straw Dogs, a remake of the 1971 thriller directed by Sam Peckinpah.  James Marsden and Kate Bosworth fill in for Dustin Hoffman and Susan George as the Sumners, “a husband and wife who clash with sadistic small-town Mississippi locals.”  Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd, Rhys Coiro, James Woods, Laz Alonso, Dominic Purcell, and Walton Goggins also star.
Writer/director Rod Lurie (Nothing But the Truth) recognizes the trickiness in redoing Peckinpah, but the remake doesn’t try to soften the brutal impact of the rape-filled original:
“It’s a fool’s errand to try to outdo Peckinpah on his turf… This is not a soft movie.  People leave this movie saying they need a drink.”

Plot Details and Production Update for Quentin Tarantino’s Spaghetti Western DJANGO UNCHAINED

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: April 30th, 2011

And so, with last night’s twitpic of the title page of Quentin Tarantino’s latest script, we’re off.  The spaghetti western is indeed titled Django Unchained.  Franco Nero first spoke about his attachment in February, so the project is surely tied to the character that Nero originated in 1966’s Django.  A source who reportedly read the script sent Shadow and Act a plot synopsis that suggests Nero may be too Italian to play the title role:
“Django is a freed slave, who, under the tutelage of a German bounty hunter (played by Christoph Waltz) becomes a bad-ass bounty hunter himself, and after assisting Waltz in taking down some bad guys for profit, is helped by Waltz in tracking down his slave wife and liberating her from an evil plantation owner.”
So “Unchained” is literal.  That’s great!  Thompson on Hollywood confirmed with agency WME that Waltz is on board; Nero indicated Keith Carradine and Treat Williams will also appear.  Hit the jump for more production details.

Lee Pace and Dean O’Gorman Join Peter Jackson’s THE HOBBIT

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 30th, 2011

Director Peter Jackson announced two new additions to the cast of The Hobbit. Lee Pace (Pushing Daises) is set to star as the Elven King Thranduil. In The Lord of the Rings mythology, Thrandull is the father of Legolas and plays a supporting role in The Hobbit. Additionally, Kiwi actor Dean O’Gorman will be playing Fili, a dwarf and one of the twelve companions of Bilbo. Posting the news on his Facebook page, here’s what Jackson had to say about the casting of Pace:
“Casting these Tolkien stories is very difficult, especially the Elven characters, and Lee has always been our first choice for Thranduil. He’s going to be great.  We loved his performance in a movie called The Fall a few years ago, and have been hoping to work with him since.  When we were first discussing who would be right for Thranduil, Lee came into mind almost immediately.”
While I’m not familiar with O’Gorman, the addition of Pace to the cast is great news. He turned in some fantastic work in Bryan Fuller’s criminally underrated TV series Pushing Daisies, and his involvement is certainly exciting. The Hobbit will be broken into two parts.  Part 1 is set for December 2012 and Part 2 will come out in December 2013.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the book.

If that wasn’t enough, it’s been confirmed that Oscorp, the company run by Norman Osborn (the Green Goblin), will appear in the film. Anthony Mackie May Star in WORLD WAR Z and GANGSTER SQUAD

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 29th, 2011

The Hurt Locker star Anthony Mackie may be starring in two high profile upcoming projects. First up, the actor is fielding an offer to star alongside Brad Pitt and The Killing’s Mireille Enos in the post-apocalyptic tale World War Z. Directed by Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace), the is based on the book of the same name which details the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse from the perspective of survivors as varied as mercenaries, US government officials, and impoverished Palestinians.
Variety also reports that Mackie is being eyed for a role in Ruben Fleischer’s (Zombieland) 1940’s crime drama Gangster Squad. That film boasts an impressive cast that includes Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling. No word on what role Mackie would play in either film. The trailer looked alright until the banal voice-over came on, then it kind of spiraled into a horrifying train wreck. Is Quentin Tarantino’s New Movie Titled DJANGO UNCHAINED?

by Adam Chitwood  Posted: April 29th, 2011

There’ve been rumblings about Quentin Tarantino’s next project for a while now. He previously talked about doing “a Southern,” a film that would bring to surface all the slavery issues that Americans are none too fond of tackling. Then there was that spaghetti western with Franco Nero rumored to be starring. In that updated story, it was confirmed that Tarantino was in fact writing a western, and Christoph Waltz is one of the stars. Beyond that, nothing else was known. The script was due to be turned in to The Weinstein Company in two months, at which time we might know more. Well, that was February.
Today, we may have learned that the title of Tarantino’s next film may be Django Unchained. How did we learn this? If you remember that image of the title page for the Inglourious Basterds script, with Tarantino’s scribbled handwriting, what lies after the jump may look familiar. Hit the jump to see what I’m talking about. ........ http://collider.com/quentin-tarantino-django-unchained/88262/

Brett Ratner to Direct New "Hercules" Film

Posted: April 28th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) has been in talks to direct a new "Hercules" movie for a while, and now comes word that the helmer is now negotiating to bring "Hercules: The Thracian Wars" comic book to the big screen for MGM.

Plot: Fourteen-hundred years ago, a tormented soul walked the Earth that was neither man nor god. Hercules, powerful son of the god king Zeus, received nothing but suffering his entire life. After twelve arduous labors and the loss of his family, this dark, world-weary soul turned his back on the gods, finding his only solace in bloody battle.

Over the years he warmed to the company of six similar souls, their only bond being their love of fighting and the presence of death. These men and woman never question where, why, or whom they go to fight; only how much they will be paid. Knowing this, the King of Thrace has hired these mercenaries to train his men to become the greatest army of all time.

Hercules begins to question King Cotys' motives when he takes his army out to battle and sees them practice on innocent men, women, and children of their neighbors. Deep in his soul something stirs, but is it enough to stop a mad king and his army of the damned from marching across Greece - or even Olympus itself?

Quentin Tarantino’s Next Film Is a Spaghetti Western Starring Christoph Waltz

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 28th, 2011

Quentin Tarantino has left the world wondering how he would follow his masterful Inglourious Basterds.  Would it be an adaptation of The Shadow?  A medieval movie starring Helen Mirren?  Tarantino said it wouldn’t be a prequel to Basterds or a sequel to Kill Bill.  So what’s the genre-bending director up to?  Italian actor Franco Nero (Django) may have spilled the beans to Movieplayer [via The Playlist].  Nero says:
“The film will be called The Angel, The Bad And The Wise and is a tribute to Sergio Leone. It’s a movie that contains humor, lots of action, but also a great plot.  We have already been signed by a dozen people who will be part of project. Among the filmmakers involved include Quentin Tarantino, Keith Carradine, Treat Williams, fifteen people in all Americans who want to do this movie and so we are trying to produce it outside of Italy.”
However, this may not be entirely true.  Hit the jump for more details on this mystery greatness and how Tarantino is reteaming with Christoph Waltz.

Josh Holloway to Guest Star on Two-Part Season Finale of COMMUNITY

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: February 28th, 2011

We haven’t seen him on TV since he was marooned on a mysterious island in Lost, but now Josh Holloway (who played James “Sawyer” Ford) is set to return to TV in a great way. EW reports Holloway is closing a deal to have a guest spot in the two-part season finale of Community which will air sometime in May. The finale will attempt to capture the same magic that made their “Modern Warfare” paintball episode such the best episode of the series by returning to the game again. Holloway will be playing a mysterious figure who emerges on campus during another game of paintball. The two-part finale is sort of a sequel to the last episode, but isn’t that how every episode of a TV series works.
