**David Fincher May Direct CLEOPATRA Starring Angelina Jolie **First Look at Roman Polanski’s CARNAGE Starring Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly, and Christoph Waltz **Alexander Payne’s THE DESCENDANTS Set for December 16th; ONE FOR THE MONEY Falls to January 27, 2012

David Fincher May Direct CLEOPATRA Starring Angelina Jolie
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 22nd, 2011
Producer Scott Rudin’s Cleopatra biopic is continuing its search for a top-tier director. Last October, James Cameron was in talks for the gig, but he decided to direct Avatar sequels instead. Then Paul Greengrass started circling the project, but chose to helm Memphis, which is about the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Now Deadline is reporting that Rudin wants to re-team with David Fincher on the project which is set to star Angelina Jolie as the Egyptian queen.

Hit the jump for more on the project and the likelihood that Fincher will sign on to direct.

First Look at Roman Polanski’s CARNAGE Starring Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly, and Christoph Waltz
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 22nd, 2011
The first image from Roman Polanski’s new film Carnage (based off the play God of Carnage) has gone online. The film stars Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Kate Winslet, and Christopher Waltz as two sets of parents who come together to talk about a schoolyard fight between their kids. If that cast combined with this director doesn’t make you want to see this movie, you’re nuts. And while Polanski is known for the deadly seriousness of his movies, Foster says the movie has some humor:

“It all happens in real-time, so it’s about an hour and 45 minutes of negotiation between two sets of parents and how it all falls apart,” she said. “Kind of like Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, but a little funnier. There’s a lot of wit.”

So I guess it will be like Revolutionary Road but intentionally funny. Hit the jump to check out the first image from the film as well as a photo of Polanski on the set. Carnage is currently in post-production and may hit theaters before the end of the year.

Alexander Payne’s THE DESCENDANTS Set for December 16th; ONE FOR THE MONEY Falls to January 27, 2012
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 22nd, 2011
For those who like to plan in far in advance, we have some release date news for you this morning. First up, Fox Searchlight has set Alexander Payne’s The Descendants for December 16th. The film stars George Clooney as a wealthy landowner who tries to re-connect with his daughters. While the release date puts it in prime position for awards season, it will have to contend with three blockbusters getting released the same day: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Presumably, Searchlight is going to start out with a limited release and then expand the film since releasing it wide as counter-programming would be incredibly risky. I’m also going to assume that The Descendants will make the rounds at various fall film festivals because if you make a modestly-budgeted film starring George Clooney, federal law requires that you show it at Toronto and/or Telluride.

Hit the jump for news on the release date for One for the Money starring Katherine Heigl.

Quentin Tarantino’s Next Film Is a Spaghetti Western Starring Christoph Waltz

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 28th, 2011

Quentin Tarantino has left the world wondering how he would follow his masterful Inglourious Basterds.  Would it be an adaptation of The Shadow?  A medieval movie starring Helen Mirren?  Tarantino said it wouldn’t be a prequel to Basterds or a sequel to Kill Bill.  So what’s the genre-bending director up to?  Italian actor Franco Nero (Django) may have spilled the beans to Movieplayer [via The Playlist].  Nero says:
“The film will be called The Angel, The Bad And The Wise and is a tribute to Sergio Leone. It’s a movie that contains humor, lots of action, but also a great plot.  We have already been signed by a dozen people who will be part of project. Among the filmmakers involved include Quentin Tarantino, Keith Carradine, Treat Williams, fifteen people in all Americans who want to do this movie and so we are trying to produce it outside of Italy.”
However, this may not be entirely true.  Hit the jump for more details on this mystery greatness and how Tarantino is reteaming with Christoph Waltz.

Josh Holloway to Guest Star on Two-Part Season Finale of COMMUNITY

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: February 28th, 2011

We haven’t seen him on TV since he was marooned on a mysterious island in Lost, but now Josh Holloway (who played James “Sawyer” Ford) is set to return to TV in a great way. EW reports Holloway is closing a deal to have a guest spot in the two-part season finale of Community which will air sometime in May. The finale will attempt to capture the same magic that made their “Modern Warfare” paintball episode such the best episode of the series by returning to the game again. Holloway will be playing a mysterious figure who emerges on campus during another game of paintball. The two-part finale is sort of a sequel to the last episode, but isn’t that how every episode of a TV series works.

Yet Another Trailer for GAME OF THRONES

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: February 28th, 2011

We’ve already seen a few different trailers for HBO’s epic new fantasy series Game of Thrones, but the cable network has released yet another one. This one is much more like a movie trailer than the previous trailers and it continues to get my excited to check out this series when it finally hits the network on April 17th. Based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire the sprawling tale set in the mythical land of Westeros tells the story of the noble Stark family who become caught up in high court intrigue when patriarch Eddard (played by Sean Bean) becomes the king’s new right-hand man.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Game of Thrones also stars Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage, Mark Addy, Kit Harrington, and Tamzin Merchant.

New Poster for DRIVE ANGRY 3D Starring Nicolas Cage

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 20th, 2011

drive-angry-poster-slice
When he’s not busy punching women/screaming about bees, Nicolas Cage stars in movies. With each new Nicolas Cage movie, comes a new hairstyle. I’m sorry, did I say hairstyle? I meant awesome hairstyle.  Next up for Cage is Patrick Lussier’s (My Bloody Valentine 3D) revenge thriller Drive Angry 3D, featuring a brand-new awesome hairstyle. The film stars Cage, Amber Heard (Zombieland), David Morse (Disturbia) and William Fichtner (Black Hawk Down).
We previously brought you the first images from the film, which look decidedly bad ass. Cage stars as Milton, the tough as nails criminal who breaks out of Hell on a quest for redemption. Fichtner plays a character simply named “The Accountant”, a mysterious demonic agent sent to retrieve Milton and return him to the fiery depths from which he came.  Hit the jump to check out the full poster. Drive Angry 3D will be released on February 25th.

Jack Black, Matt Dillon, and Renée Zellweger Join Matthew Weiner’s YOU ARE HERE; Rachel McAdams Offered Role

by Adam Chitwood    Posted:October 25th, 2010

black_dillon_zellweger_mcadams_weiner_slice_01
Fresh off an unsurprisingly stellar season four of AMC’s hit show Mad Men, creator/head writer/director/all-knowing-Oz Matthew Weiner is currently busy casting his feature film debut, the romantic dramedy You Are Here. Pajiba reports that Jack Black, Matt Dillon, and Renée Zellweger are currently attached to star, and with an offer out to Rachel McAdams to join the cast as well.
Last year, we reported that Weiner was looking to cast Jennifer Aniston, Bradley Cooper, and Zach Galifianakis in the project.  However, when the film didn’t materialize as fast as Weiner was hoping, filming was pushed back to this year in lieu of scheduling issues with the filming of Mad Men.  It looks like Weiner has chosen the current hiatus between seasons four and five to get the project back on track.  For more on the film, including a plot description and which characters each actor will play, hit the jump.
You Are Here was written by Weiner during his days as a writer on The Sopranos, so one could assume that it would be a bit, ahem, dark.  However, the description actually seems much lighter than one might expect.  Pajiba says:
It’s about two roommates in their 30s, preoccupied with dodging the responsibilities and rigors of adult life. That is, until the sudden death of one of the men’s fathers, which makes his unstable son the new owner of a general store, a country home and millions of dollars worth of Amish farmland.
Black is set to play the “unstable son” (which was previously the role Galifianakis was attached to, who I would’ve loved to see in this part), with Dillon as his “skirt-chasing, hard-partying roommate”.  Zellweger is said to play Black’s sister, jealous and angry over her omission from her father’s will.  Finally, McAdams, if she accepts the part, would play the father’s widow.
This actually sounds like an intriguing/entertaining story, but I can’t help but long for the previously attached cast.  Galifianakis proved in It’s Kind of a Funny Story that he can do drama, and from a Matthew Weiner script you can be sure the film will have its fair share of dramatic scenes.  Not to mention the fact that it’s been a while since we’ve seen either Dillon or Zellwegger in anything, well, significant.  But maybe that’s a good thing.  Say what you will about Zellwegger, but her performance in Jerry Maguire was spot on, and this could put Dillon back into Singles/There’s Something About Mary endearing asshole territory.
Nevertheless, I just can’t see Weiner making a bad film (unless he decides to include creepy Glen).  This season’s Don/Peggy episode “The Suitcase” was one of the best hours of television in the history of the medium, and the show’s shown no sign of creatively dwindling over the years.  It’s hard to see him fumbling his feature film debut.

Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, and Matt Dillon Sign on to Roman Polanski’s GOD OF CARNAGE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted:September 23rd, 2010

Roman Polanski is lining up a terrific cast for his adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s Tony-winning play God of CarnageDeadline reports that Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, and Matt Dillon have signed on to star in the drama.  Per Deadline, “God of Carnage tells the story of two sets of parents who meet after their sons are involved in a schoolyard fight. The meeting goes disastrously wrong as each pair attacks the other’s parenting skills before turning on each other about problems in their own marriages.”  Remember kids: if you get into fight in the schoolyard, you’re probably going to break up your parents.
Foster is currently in the unenviable position of defending Mel Gibson as he stars in her first directorial feature in 15 years, The Beaver.  Winslet will next be seen in Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion and the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce.  Waltz is currently shooting on Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers and will next be seen in Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet and Francis Lawrence’s Water for Elephants.  Dillon most recently co-starred in Takers.

New International Posters for THE GREEN HORNET

by Talia Soghomonian    Posted: December 29th, 2010

One of the most anticipated movies of the new year, The Green Hornet is set to kick off 2011 with a blend of adventure and director Michel Gondry’s habitual touch of eccentricity, if the various artworks are anything to go by.
Remember when Collider gave you an exclusive sneak peek of The Green Hornet’s character posters back in November? They have now officially debuted on Korean billboards, while the Spanish and French posters resemble the US ones. Hit the jump to take a look.
For fans, the international and character posters are sure to become a collector’s item. The saturated colors give them a comic feel and their poses are rather telling. While Seth Rogen’s Britt Reid and his sidekick Kato, played by Taiwanese star Jay Chou, portray the classic superhero dynamic, their arch-enemy Benjamin Chudnofsky, portrayed by the ever-eclectic Christoph Waltz, looks over his shoulder, his pointy beard reminding me of Satan’s tail; and Cameron Diaz as Britt’s secretary Lenore Case looks less uptight than Pepper Potts with just the right hint of sexiness.
I noticed the posters gracing the billboards along the corridors of the Parisian subway this morning. The movie will hit French theaters on January 12, two days before its US release (well, director Michel Gondry is French) and will premiere in Paris on January 4. The main French poster, featuring all four main characters, reads: “To break the law so as to better defend it.”
And if you’ve been living under a rock for the past few months, here’s a full recap, including set visits, interviews and a featurette.

Clooney joins Bullock in 'Gravity'
George Clooney has joined Sandra Bullock in the cast of Alfonso Cuaron's science fiction drama Gravity, reports Deadline.
The project revolves around a female astronaut (Sandra Bullock) trying to make it to Earth after a disaster in space. Clooney will play her colleague.

Clooney will replace Robert Downey Jr. as the leader of a space station that gets decimated by debris from an exploded asteroid. Clooney and Bullock's characters are the sole survivors of the mission and must find a way to return home.

The initial pairing for the Alfonso Cuaron-directed project was to have been Angelina Jolie and Robert Downey Jr. Then came a protracted series of reversals that saw Jolie leave and come back, while actresses Marion Cotillard, Scarlett Johansson, Blake Lively and Natalie Portman were involved with the movie to varying degrees, all within the last eight months.

Downey stuck with the project throughout the various casting changes but in mid-November, just as things looked set with Bullock, he bailed.

Gravity will begin production next April or May after Bullock has completed Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close and Clooney finds time away from his next directorial effort The Ides Of March.

Gwyneth Paltrow Offered Role in ROCK OF AGES; Tom Cruise Also in Talks

by Talia Soghomonian    Posted: December 15th, 2010

After appearing in Glee, playing a country singer in Country Strong and performing live at the Country Music Awards last month, Gwyneth Paltrow is about two seconds away from joining the cast of Rock of Ages. The actress has been offered a part in the big screen adaptation of the popular Broadway jukebox musical, Entertainment Weekly has learned.
“I just got the script and I will read it on the plane home tomorrow. But it sounds like it could be fun,” she said at the Country Strong premiere. Yes, and it will be fun. Not only might she end up with an equally famous co-star, I’ve also concocted a playlist of 80s tracks for her. Check it out after the jump.
We reported back in October that Tom Cruise had been offered a role in Rock of Ages, which director Adam Shankman describes as “‘Mamma Mia!’ for dudes”, and producer Jenno Topping has now confirmed that the Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol star is indeed “in discussions.” And when a producer makes such declarations publicly, it may actually mean “yes, he is.” Topping also produced Paltrow’s movie Country Strong.
As for Paltrow, her career has certainly taken a musical turn this year. Her appearance in Glee was one of the highlights of the show’s season and the actress may return for a couple of more episodes in the spring: “I will probably do some more Glee episodes and maybe some more films that involve singing, but I’m not sure I would ever quit my current job and become a full-time singer. I love my day job and we already have a musician in the family”.
The musician is her husband, Coldplay singer Chris Martin. When I interviewed her for Iron Man back in 2008, knowing her penchant for music – she’d had a blast performing live with him and Jay-Z in London in 2006 – I asked her whether she would ever record a duet with Coldplay. She laughed and said, “No! I won’t ever sing with them. We keep it separate.”

WATER FOR ELEPHANTS Trailer Starring Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson, and Christoph Waltz

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 15th, 2010

The trailer for Water for Elephants has gone online.  Based on the novel by Sara Gruen, the film is directed by Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) and stars Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon, Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz, and MTV Movie Award-winner Robert Pattinson.  The story is set during the Great Depression and centers on a veterinary student (Pattinson) who drops out of school and joins a second-rate traveling circus after his parents are killed in a car accident.  While at the circus, he falls in love with Marlena (Witherspoon), who is married to a cruel and violent animal trainer (Waltz).
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars James Frain (TRON: Legacy), Hal Holbrook (Into the Wild), and Paul Schneider (Parks and Recreation). Water for Elephants opens April 15, 2011.
Here’s the synopsis for Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants:
As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety, the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It was there that he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great gray hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.

Clint Mansell No Longer Scoring SOURCE CODE

by Ben Garman    Posted: December 15th, 2010

Back in September we reported that The Fountain composer, Clint Mansell, was to score Duncan Jones’ new film, Source Code, a logical choice given the success of their collaboration on Moon. However, there has been a change of plans, as Mansell has an issue with scheduling.  Duncan Jones reported on his twitter that:
“unfortunately we weren’t able to work out a schedule so Clint could do the score in the end. He has been a very busy bee.”
In Mansell’s place, Jones has hired Chris Bacon, “a very talented young guy”, who has been working scoring films for some time but is largely unknown. A 70 piece orchestra is recording the soundtrack over the course of three days. Epic. Hit the jump for more.
Presumably it is Mansell’s work with Darren Aronofsky, the director behind highly anticipated ballerina thriller Black Swan, that has prevented Jones and Mansell working together, and fans of the acclaimed composer will no doubt be disappointed by his departure. However, Duncan Jones assures us that Chris Bacon is more than up to the job, and came highly recommended by his editor, “the legendary” Paul Hirsch (Star Wars: Episodes IV and V).
If you’ve not heard of Bacon, don’t worry – you’re not missing out (yet). His composing credits to date include scoring Disney animation documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty, Space Chimps and Love Ranch. I’ve not seen them either. Still, this could be the emergence of some fantastic new soundtrack talent, and promising new faces in the industry are always a good thing. Let’s hold our fingers crossed that Jones and Bacon create something as mesmerising as Mansell would have done.
Incidentally, for those interested and who might hold his opinion in high regard, Duncan Jones also tweeted that he gives the Coen Brother’s new film True Grit two thumbs up, calling it an “old fashioned, terrific movie.” As if we needed further convincing.
Source Code will be released on April 15, 2011 and stars Jake Gyllenhaal. The news that Mansell was off Source Code was first reported by BadassDigest.

Kirsten Dunst Covers 'BlackBook' December 2010
Kirsten Dunst is stunning in Louis Vuitton on the cover of BlackBook magazine’s December 2010/January 2011 issue!
Here’s what the 28-year-old All Good Things actress had to share with editor Nick Haramis:
On the importance of her All Good Things role: ““I used to assume that I’d do this forever, and then there came a point in my life when I was like, Why am I doing this at all? With All Good Things, I realized that acting is what I’m meant to be doing, and not for the money or to make a hit, but because I love it. For the first time, acting became more about me than everybody else, and that was amazingly cathartic.”
On checking into rehab in 2008 to deal with depression: “My friends and family were put in a position where they had to defend me, and it was an awful time… On a personal level, I would talk to anybody about it, but not on a public level. If I do that, then the next person feels like they can ask me about it, and the person after that, until everyone then feels entitled to ask me about it, and that’s not coming from a good place.”
On reading celeb blogs: “I like JustJared because he’s never mean….that’s the one gossip site I’ll go to…..I’m usually like, ‘What’s going on? What are people doing? Oh my god, I can’t believe that!’”
FYI: Kirsten finished her cover look with earrings by Subversive Jewelry by Justin Giunta and a Mawi ring.

Julianna Margulies Covers 'Harper's Bazaar' January 2011
Julianna Margulies graces the cover of Harper’s Bazaar’s January 2011 issue, on newsstands Tuesday, December 21.
Here’s what the 44-year-old actress had to share with her Good Wife co-star, Alan Cumming:
On playing Alicia on The Good Wife: “It’s a challenge because she’s so far from who I am. I’m not saying I’m a crazy sexual person, but she’s such a repressed Wasp. I think the beautiful part of this journey she is on as a woman is that now she’s finding out who she is through her work and also discovering what sexy is to her.”
On marriage: “I saw myself as someone who would always have a partner, but I never liked the feeling of what marriage said. Looking back, I think I was just mostly scared of it. Strangely, when the time was right, it all seemed to make sense. There’s a big difference in what you think you’re supposed to be and what you suddenly realize you are.”
On balancing motherhood and career: “It’s tricky being a working mom. You feel guilt all the way around. You want to be there for your husband, be there for your kids, be great at your job, all that stuff. But at the end of the day, if you put everyone in front of you, what happens to you?”
