Jonah Hill and Mark Wahlberg Join Forces for GOOD TIME GANG

by Jason Barr    Posted: July 7th, 2011

The world is in need of a good “buddy mercenary movie,” or at least that is what RCR Pictures is hoping. Just in case, the independent label has locked down Jonah Hill and Mark Wahlberg as a pair of party-first mercs who decide to take on a terrorist case in the action comedy Good Time Gang. According to 24 Frames, Good Time Gang is being described internally as an action-heavy take derived from a Lethal Weapon-esque formula. Penned by Max Landis (of Fox’s Frankenstein project), the pic sees Hill and Wahlberg’s mission go awry when it is discovered that one of the two is related to the terrorist in question.
Per the report, RCR has yet to select a director for Good Time Gang but counts poker champion Chris Ferguson and company head Schorr (Food, Inc.) as producers on the film. As for Hill, the thesp has been spreading his wings into more action-intensive work with his upcoming role alongside Johnny Depp and Channing Tatum in 21 Jump Street which is due out March 16th, 2012. He also has turns in The Sitter and Moneyball due out this year on August 5th and September 23rd respectively. Wahlberg is currently filming Seth MacFarlane’s feature directorial debut, Ted, alongside Mila Kunis and Giovanni Ribisi. That film is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 13th, 2012. He can also be seen starring opposite Ben Foster and Kate Beckinsale in the thriller Contraband which opens against Hill’s aforementioned 21 Jump Street on March 16th.        http://collider.com/jonah-hill-good-time-gang-mark-wahlberg/101029/

Over 15 Images from FRIGHT NIGHT

A number of images from director Craig Gillespie’s Fright Night remake have been released. The film centers on a teenager (Anton Yelchin) whose neighbor (Colin Farrell) turns out to be a vampire. We’ve seen some of these images before, but a few of them are new. When Farrell’s in the right movie, he can be great, and the supporting cast isn’t too shabby. I’m interested to see the actor’s take on the vampire craze.
In addition to Farrell and Yelchin, Fright Night also stars Toni Collette, David Tennant, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Dave Franco and Imogen Poots. The film hits theaters in 3D on August 19th. http://collider.com/fright-night-movie-images-2/100963/

Teaser Trailer for Season Two of THE WALKING DEAD

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: July 7th, 2011

We’ve already gotten a look at the first image from the anticipated second season of AMC’s hit drama series The Walking Dead, and with October inching slowly closer, now we have this awesome new teaser trailer as well. It’s nothing too mind-blowing, but it accomplishes just what any good teaser trailer should and leaves you wanting Halloween to get here sooner than later for the second season premiere. The cut to the title complete with some splatter is a nice touch, but you’ll see what I mean when you watch the trailer after the jump.http://collider.com/the-walking-dead-trailer-season-two/100957/

Michael Suscy to Direct Romeo and Juliet Update ROSALINE for Fox 2000 [UPDATED]

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: July 7th, 2011

Fox 2000 has hired Michael Suscy, director of the award-winning HBO mini-series Grey Gardens, to helm their adaptation of Rebecca Serle’s novel Rosaline. Showblitz reports that Suscy has landed the job for the film, which serves as an update to Shakespeare’s classic Romeo & Juliet story. Because it’s been a while since we’ve seen a glib teen high school comedy loosely based on a Shakespeare play, Rosaline will be a contemporary version of the story set in (you guessed it) high school. The film will tell the tale of Juliet and her Romeo from the perspective of the latter’s jilted ex-lover Rosaline.
We reported back in November that (500) Days of Summer scribes Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber would be writing the screenplay, but it’s unknown if Suscy will be using their draft or commissioning a rewrite. Shawn Levy (Night at the Musem) is producing.
[Update: We've been told by Fox that Rosaline won't be contemporary after all, and will be set in Verona in the 1500's instead. This is definitely more intriguing. The logline is as follows: "Romeo’s jilted ex-girlfriend Rosaline tells her side of the classic Romeo and Juliet story in this comedy set in 16th century Verona."]

New Trailer for Gus Van Sant’s RESTLESS

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: July 7th, 2011

A new trailer for director Gus Van Sant’s (Milk) new film Restless has been released. The film tells the story of a terminally ill girl (Mia Wasikowska) who, during her last remaining months, befriends a boy (Henry Hopper) whose best friend is a ghost. Van Sant has a knack for small dramas, and judging by the trailer Restless seems to be no exception. Wasikowska and Hopper look great, and the story is quirky with a touch of heartbreak.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. In addition to Wasikowska and Hopper, the film stars Ryo Kase and Schuyler Fisk. Produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, Restless is poised to hit theaters on September 16th.   http://collider.com/restless-movie-trailer/100940/

Melissa McCarthy and Ryan Lee Join Judd Apatow’s Untitled KNOCKED UP Spin-Off

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: July 7th, 201

After seeing Bridesmaids, audiences and critics who enjoyed the film tended to agree that Melissa McCarthy would be one of the breakout stars of the year.  That easy prediction is already coming true with McCarthy and Bridesmaids co-write Annie Mumolo selling a pitch to Paramount, and McCarthy being rumored to co-star with Jon Hamm in a new Paul Feig/Judd Apatow comedy.  McCarthy will certainly be working with Apatow again, but he’ll be directing her in his untitled Knocked Up spin-off starring Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann.  THR reports that McCarthy will play a mom at the school where Rudd and Mann’s children attend and that Super 8 co-star Ryan Lee will play her son.
The untitled comedy also stars Albert Brooks, Megan Fox, Chris O’Dowd, Lena Dunham, Charlene Yi, and Wyatt Russell.  The film is set to open in December 2012. http://collider.com/judd-apatow-knocked-up-spin-off-melissa-mccarthy/100886/

Leonardo DiCaprio Is Closer to Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED Than Will Smith; Idris Elba, Chris Tucker, Jamie Foxx Rumored for Django

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: June 7th, 2011

No actor is officially confirmed for Django Unchained, the latest from Quentin Tarantino, but the cast is starting to take shape. According to Deadline, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson are expected to sign on.  Leonardo DiCaprio is about to enter negotiations to play the villain, . That doesn’t give us the titular character, though.  Will Smith was the first major contender for the role of Django, “a slave who is liberated and taught the tricks of the trade by a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter (Waltz).”  Negotiations are stuck in first gear, and we’re probably kidding ourselves to expect the super image-conscious Smith to sign on for such a gleefully controversial role.
Deadline hears Smith likely won’t sign on; possible replacements include Idris Elba, Chris Tucker, and Jamie Foxx.  That’s an eclectic list, somewhere between intriguing and Name Three Black Actors Who Aren’t Will Smith That Headlined Box Office Hits in the Past Decade.  More after the jump: http://collider.com/leonardo-dicaprio-chris-tucker-django-unchained/95282/

Reese Witherspoon to Produce and Possibly Star in DreamWorks’ WHO INVITED HER?

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 7th, 2011

DreamWorks has emerged victorious from a bidding war for novelist Sascha Rothchild’s comedy pitch Who Invited Her? with Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon set to produce and potentially star. Variety reports that the project centers on a woman who invites herself to a male bachelor party weekend and will purportedly follow the shenanigans that inevitably ensue. If Witherspoon does indeed end up in Who Invited Her?, it will not be the first starring/producing double-duty pulled by the actress as she is also filling both shoes on the upcoming action/comedy This Means War also starring Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. In addition to her work on Who Invited Her?, Rothchild is also writing and executive producing an adaptation of her book How to Get Divorced by 30 over at Universal. http://collider.com/reese-witherspoon-who-invited-her/95248/

Chris O’Dowd, Lena Dunham, Charlyne Yi and Wyatt Russell Join Judd Apatow’s KNOCKED UP Spin-Off

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 7th, 2011

Judd Apatow is filling out the cast for his next directorial effort, with Bridesmaids star Chris O’Dowd, Lena Dunham (director of Tiny Furniture), Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up) and Wyatt Russell currently in negotiations to join the untitled ensemble comedy. Written by Apatow, the film is a spinoff of sorts from his 2007 comedy Knocked Up, focusing on Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann’s characters. Variety reports that O’Dowd and Dunham will play employees of Rudd’s indie record company, Russell will portray a hockey player, and Yi will reprise her role as Jodi from Knocked Up.
The cast for the untitled comedy currently includes Rudd, Mann, Megan Fox and Albert Brooks. O’Dowd is just coming off the massive success of the Apatow-produced Bridesmaids. His turn as Wiig’s love interest in the film has him fielding a flood of offers, and deservedly so. No other plot details on Apatow’s flick are known at the moment, but it’s set to be released in December 2012.

Megan Fox in Talks to Join Judd Apatow’s KNOCKED UP Spin-Off Starring Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 16th, 2011
Megan Fox is in negotiations to join Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up spin-off starring Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann. THR reports that Fox’s role is currently unknown and no plot has currently been revealed for the film other than Rudd and Mann will reprise their bickering husband-and-wife characters from the 2007 comedy. The under-wraps film is currently set to be released on June 1, 2012.

This is the latest comedy that Fox has signed on to. She previously boarded Jennifer Westfeldt’s ensemble comedy Friends with Kids with Jon Hamm, Adam Scott, and Kristen Wiig. Fox’s latest film, Passion Play, was picked up at the Toronto Film Festival despite abysmal reviews. Play, which co-stars Mickey Rourke and Bill Murray, will be released directed to DVD. While Fox hasn’t landed a hit in a while, she can be charming when given the right material. Hopefully this new supporting work in these upcoming comedies will help to re-establish her.

Tommy Lee Jones to Join Meryl Streep in NEW HOPE SPRINGS?
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 16th, 2011
Tommy Lee Jones may be poised to team up with Meryl Streep in David Frankel’s (The Devil Wears Prada) drama New Hope Springs. We previously reported that Steve Carell was in talks to join the film, and now Deadline reports that Tommy Lee Jones is the frontrunner to play Streep’s husband. The story centers on a couple who, after 31 years of marriage, go into intense couples counseling to decide whether or not they should stay together. Carell would play the therapist.

While nothing’s been confirmed, Jones seems like a perfect fit opposite Streep. Here’s hoping he takes the role. Vanessa Taylor (TV’s Everwood) wrote the script and shooting is set to begin this August.

Shia LaBeouf to Star in HORNS
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: March 16th, 2011
Shia LaBeouf is attached to star in the feature film adaptation of the Joe Hill novel Horns. LaBeouf will play Ig Perrish, a 26-year-old who drinks heavily on the first anniversary of his girlfriend’s murder and awakes the next morning with horns growing from his head: “As his horns grow bigger, Ig sets out to investigate the unsolved murder of his girlfriend and the case’s connection to his cursed fate.”

Keith Bunin (In Treatment) will adapt the screenplay for Mandalay Pictures, who optioned Horns in 2009 shortly before the book was published. Hit the jump for the full synopsis, plus a look at the other projects Hill and LaBeouf have in development.

Albert Brooks Eyes Role in Judd Apatow’s KNOCKED UP Spin-Off Starring Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 16th, 2011
Earlier today, we reported that Megan Fox is in talks to join Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up spinoff, featuring Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprising their characters from that film. Now it looks like Albert Brooks may be joining the cast as well. Deadline reports that Brooks would play Rudd’s character’s father in the film that Apatow wrote and will direct.

No other plot details are known at this point, but Rudd and Mann stole nearly every scene together in Knocked Up and the pairing of Brooks and Apatow seems like a genius combination, so it’s safe to say that this project’s a bit anticipated. Though Apatow produces plenty, he’s only written and directed three flicks to date: The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up and Funny People. No word on when production is set to start, but with casting moving rather quickly, the film will most likely be rolling soon.

Judd Apatow Talks About Continuity of KNOCKED UP Spinoff and PEE-WEE HERMAN Sequel
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: March 1st, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Judd Apatow will spend a good portion of his near future with familiar characters. He signed on to produce the new Pee-wee Herman movie, the culmination of Paul Reubens’ revival tour of the 1980s character. More to my interest, Apatow is writing and directing a new feature based on the characters played by Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd in Knocked Up, scheduled for release June 1, 2012.

The Venice Family Clinic honored Apatow with a humanitarian award last night, where he discussed what makes these characters worth revisiting, and how to address the continuity issues that might arise in each property. Read what he had to say after the jump.

Disney Developing Theme Park Ride JUNGLE CRUISE into Starring Vehicle for Tom Hanks and Tim Allen
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 2nd, 2011 at 11:47 am

Disney is hoping that the voice-chemistry Tom Hanks and Tim Allen have in the Toy Story movies will translate into live-action gold. Deadline reports that the studio is transforming their adaptation of the theme park ride “Jungle Cruise” into a family flick starring the two actors. No director is currently attached, but the studio has hired Robert S.H. Schulman (Shrek) to pen the script. Mandeville’s David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman (The Fighter) will produce.

Hanks just started shooting on Stephen Daldry’s adaptation of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. He’s also attached a family film based on the Mattel toy Major Matt Mason, Kathryn Bigelow’s international crime drama Triple Frontier, and an adaptation of David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas. As for Allen, he recently signed on to star in the ABC comedy pilot The Last Days of Man.

David Koepp to Work on MEN IN BLACK III Script
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 2nd, 2011 at 1:12 pm

Production on Barry Sonnenfeld’s Men in Black III went into its planned hiatus last November to handle issues with the script. That hiatus was set to finish in February, but was recently pushed back to March 28th. According to Deadline, blockbuster scribe David Koepp (Spider-Man) has been brought in to work on the script for the next several weeks.

The story for the third involvement involves the movie’s villain (Jemaine Clement) traveling back in time to kill Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones), but that assassination will set off a chain of events that will destroy the world. Agent J (Will Smith) must travel back in time to protect Agent K and the universe. Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder) wrote the original draft of the script, and then Jeff Nathanson (Rush Hour 2) was brought on board to punch up the time-traveling scenes. There are no details on what parts of the script require Koepp’s attention, but Sony insists that the 3D film will make its May 25, 2012 release date. The movie also stars Rip Torn, Alice Eve, Emma Thompson, and Josh Brolin.

Alison Brie Joins Emily Blunt and Jason Segel in Nicholas Stoller’s FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 2nd, 2011 at 2:45 pm

Community star Alison Brie has joined Emily Blunt and Jason Segel in the upcoming relationship comedy Five-Year Engagement. The movie charts the very long engagement of a couple played by Blunt and Segel. Segel co-wrote the script with director Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall). Judd Apatow and Shauna Robertson will produce.

According to Variety, Brie will play the sister of Blunt’s character and will put on an English accent for the role. While Community may not have the killer ratings of other network shows, I have no doubt that it’s a launching pad for its cast members, particularly Brie and co-star Donald Glover. Fans of Community know that Brie kills at comedy, but her work on Mad Men shows that she’s equally adept at more dramatic fare. She’ll next be seen in theaters in Wes Craven’s Scream 4.
